TheFutureof Transportation

In 2019, the U.S. Transportation Sector of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a breakdown of transportation carbon emitters. The largest producer of carbon emissions was, unsurprisingly, light-duty vehicles, making up 58% of emissions. Heavy-duty trucks came in second at 24%, followed by aircraft (10%), rail (2%), ships and boats (2%), and others (5%). The good news is, we have suitable solutions to these numbers. For cars, the future is electric; many major car companies such as Volkswagen, Jaguar, Volvo, Cadillac, and many others all have outgoing pledges to become fully electric in the coming decade.

In politics, California Governor Gavin Newsom has, via executive order, promised the end of net-emission vehicles by 2035, as transportation makes up roughly 50% of California’s greenhouse gas emissions For aircraft, Airlines for America, a group representing American Airlines, Delta, United, JetBlue, Southwest, and others, has pledged to bring the airline industry to carbon neutrality by 2050 by upping the production of suitable aviation fuel (SAF) For rail, the future is bright as well. A railroad infrastructure expansion would not only mean a shift to a net-zero emission railroad but also a cut down on emissions from some of the highest contributors like light-duty vehicles.

For the shipping industry, however, the future is unknown. Although they only produce 2% of all carbon emissions, that number is only expected to rise in the coming decades by close to 250%, something unfound in every other transportation industry where emissions are expected to fall. Of all the shipping giants throughout the world, only one has stepped forward with a plan to produce a carbon-neutral vessel, Maersk. The Danish shipping company announced their plans to launch the world's first carbon-neutral ship by 2023, earlier this year. Maersk’s plan was to run the cargo vessel using Methanol, a fuel that can prove rather difficult to produce at a larger scale for cargo vessels. As of now, the push for the 2023 deadline is in full flight and is likely to be met. While the rest of the shipping industry's future is unknown, and carbon emissions are only projected to rise, global and political pressure to reduce carbon emissions is not easy to dismiss.

The greenhouse effect is caused by a gas that absorbs and emits radiant energy in the thermal infrared range. Water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, ozone, and other synthetic chemicals are examples of greenhouse gases. Teams of people are working around the world to locate and eliminate secret sources of greenhouse gases. For the last three years, this team also started dealing with refrigerant gaseswhich contribute to climate change. You may believe that greenhouse gases are beneficial because they keep the atmosphere warm enough for life and prevent harmful solar radiation from reaching the planet's surface; however, these gases cause climate change by trapping the heat and it leads to respiratory disease due to smog and air pollution.

According to BBC News, “Ángel is part of a chain of people working to stop these gases causing damage to the planet.” This group works tirelessly to track down, capture, and kill rogue gases before they can cause climate chaos. A company founded by climate offsetting is negotiating with governments, private companies, and individuals around the world to find sustainable ways to find, protect, and kill the gases. In the UK, global warming emissions can also be contained in freezers and air conditioners, which should be avoided. It's yet another reason why illegally dumping waste can be so dangerous.

The way the world is evolving is creating significant issues for us.

From small island nations to the world's most prosperous nations, it brings a deep sense of insecurity to people's lives and livelihoods Dangerous weather conditions are becoming more frequent and serious as climate change worsens.

BacteriainYourBackyard

What is one thing that door knobs, pet toys, keyboards, and light switches all have in common? They all contain bacteria! Bacteria is everywhere, even on your body: in your mouth, on your hands and feet, and on your face. However, there is no need to worry, as not all bacteria are bad. Actually, there are bacteria inside your body! Yes, bacteria is present in your gut microbiome and they essentially produce a variety of vitamins to help your body digest and process food. You also consume bacteria everyday.

Good bacteria is present in your everyday water, no matter where you get it from. But is that really the truth? Can all water really be equal even if it’s from the bathroom sink versus the kitchen sink? In this study, I, a high school student, highlight the experiment I conducted with a friend regarding bacteria in water from different sources. We ask the question, is there really a difference between these sources of water? More specifically, how much bacteria is actually present in water and how do different sources of water compare to each other in regards to the volume of bacteria?

To start off, to conduct an experiment, we need to list materials and a procedure For our research, we used petri dishes with agar-agar in them (you can buy these pre-made!). Agar-agar is a bacteria growth agent. With it at the bottom of the dish, the bacteria becomes visible to the human eye. We also need cotton swabs to swab surfaces we want to test for bacteria and of course, we need water.

In particular, we tested kitchen sink water, school lab tap water, bathroom sink water, toilet water, school water fountain water, and bottled water. We wanted to also test our water at school to ensure how safe it is. As for procedure, we planned to take samples of water from all of the aforementioned sources and dip the swabs in them and transfer it into the petri dish by rubbing the swab on the agaragar layer. After all of that was done, we waited.

BacteriainYourBackyard

During this period, we formed hypotheses about which source of water would have the most bacteria And naturally, we predicted that the toilet water would Contrary to popular belief, it was actually the school fountain water! The school fountain water grew the most bacteria, while the other sources grew virtually none. Now we ask the question, why is that?

Well, we haven’t taken the research this far, but we plan to test the faucets of each source, such as the mouthpiece for the fountain. We believe that the faucet of the water fountain is so filled with bacteria that the water coming out collects it. Furthermore, we identified one bacteria in the fountain for sure; there is definitely E Coli Thus, this water is especially dangerous for students to be drinking. As a result of our studies, we are now working together to get the water fountains shut down or closed off in our school.

With all that being said, how can you do this? You are probably a high school student. Maybe you want to conduct a study like this one or maybe you just want to make a change in your community. Whatever it may be, you can do it too! All you need to do is be curious: ask teachers and counselors for opportunities in research or materials to do your research, contact research grant-givers and send them your studies, go to your principal to make changes in your school, and lastly, be persistent!

You won’t always succeed the first time you try something, but it’s always worth trying again if it’s something you ’ re really passionate about. So I leave you with one final thought: As Gandhi once said “Be the change you wish to see in the world” and as I added on “be the good bacteria and don’t be E. Coli!”

Paper Towns - John Green

Paper Towns is a marvellous young adult book written by John Green. The book follows the story of Quentin Jacobsen, a highschool senior in Orlando, Florida. Quentin, better known as Q, is an awkward but smart band kid who is determined to succeed in highschool. Q’s neighbour and childhood friend, Margo Roth Spieglemen is a mysterious and confident girl who is very popular in highschool. Q has always had a huge crush on Margo since they were young. Sadly, as they grew older they both drifted apart from each other and now that they are high school seniors, they barely talk to each other. Until one night out of nowhere, Margo decides to break into Q’s bedroom and recruit him on a night-long mission, in which they prank and take revenge on Margo’s ex and her former friends.

This night was a very thrilling adventure for Q, who is used to staying in his comfort zone and abiding by the rules. Q also started to feel optimistic, thinking that he and Margo would become friends again. However, the next day Margo disappears, and is nowhere to be seen. Her friends and family think that she has run away and will return back home eventually, as she has in the past. Quentin is keen to find out where Margo is and why she disappeared. Throughout the book, Q tries to put together pieces of clues Margo has left for him, eager to find answers. John Green does a wonderful job exploring themes of self-identity and belonging, while captivating the reader with a compelling mystery. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves thriller or adventure.

Paintings were not a popular art form during the classical (Gupta and Mau period of North India, with sculptu being a much more observed art fo However, Buddhist monks did cr extensive murals in the Ajanta caves du this era which can be used to observe so norms during this period of painting. L in the caves were thin and one-dimensio but incredibly meticulous, with not stroke out of place Done in black for background and dark brown for sent beings, they also varied in thickn depending on what feature was be shown. It was a non-realistic style of line depth and shading were not used make the painting look more 3 dimensio

Sentient or once-sentient beings (espec if the beings were female) that are a pa nature were represented with curv organic lines while the background (such as the temple or castle that the painting is taking place at) was done in geometric shapes. Negative space is not common in the mural itself as the background is usually filled with people and/or structures of some kind. The composition is dynamic with a lot going on in every scene, and it looks as though you are watching the beings in the painting interact. The people in these caves are faces away from the viewer and towards each other, mostly doing that in ¾ profile. Since it was on cave walls that were covered in clay, the texture of the paintings was smoother than rock but rougher than paper. Primarily in red, yellow, brown, black, and lapis, the paintings were variable in color. The colors were so intense, they can still be seen to this day.

Shading was also used in all of the paintings to make them look more polished but not to give them a 3d look. Patterns would be the extreme curves and contrapposto stance in sentient (especially female) beings, the exaggeration of facial features to better show expression, and the adoration of human-like figures in a lot of jewelry. However, the top halves of the humanlike figures were usually naked. The paintings in these caves were for educational purposes to record stories from the Jatakas of Buddhism that narrate the Buddha’s many lives. The style is uniquely Indian with near to no foreign influence. It depicts many Buddhist and Hindu figures in it because it was built to show exactly that. ~ Anonymous

After years of moiling, we are now a do everything at our fingertips whi call development. Well in a sense w be right. However, this is development of technology, indu and education. What about development of the human min What about the stereotyped conven and hypercritic temperament of th called society? I don’t know if it's going to change but I want to ma impact. And amplify the society and a better place for all inclusive o victims who endure the affliction single day.

From the students in school to the j g in competitions, from colleagues to neighbours and from friends to relatives, everyone turns a blind eye to disabled people, autistic people or any freaking person who is just not like them or fit enough for their conservative standards. Calling names, commenting, and disregarding us just for nothing. Nonetheless for people who think it's our fault to be born different and people who just want to give up like losers, go on. Despite that it's not our mistake; it is the community that’s at fault. It is them who try to supress, mock, wound and manipulate us to such an extent that subsequently we believe it's our fault

Whatsoever we are humans too that feel the same humanly changes and emotions. After all we all live under the same sky. Furthermore, there are some people who may argue that we are dangerous and vicious and are just not normal. Well, yes, we are not normal! But we do have our reasons. And most of the time society is the reason. If individuals just stop discriminating, suppressing each other and live fraternally, no one can stop us from being the most developed.

Edu, Universe.

EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EDUCATION

Shouldwehavetopayforaquality education?

It feels like this debate has been going on for decades, some individuals pride themselves on attending private schools, as if receiving a private education was better than a having a public one.

On the other hand, people who’ve attended a public institution claim their education was far more inclusive and accessible and that its quality is nowhere near bad. As someone who’s been part of both systems-- I can only tell you one thing there’s no right answer

Let’s take a look at some factual information:

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), students widely prefer public schools with 50 7 million attending these kind of schools in the US. While private education has been on the low for the last couple of years, only registering around five million enrollments in 2017

This statistic may factor into class sizes; graduation and dropout rates and opportunities for students.

Immense class sizes might not be the most personalized experience you´ll find if you go to a public school, however it is bound to have a more diverse student body and surprisingly better managed than small classes, allowing the students to learn more content in a subjct.

Unlike public education you will most likely get one-onone sessions with your teachers if you ever need them and you will surely be able to participate in more programs offered by your school since funding and finding a spot wouldn’t be a problem.

PubliceducationvPrivateeducation.

NCES data shows that the student-to-teacher ratio at private schools was 11.9 students per teacher, lower than the average 16.2 at public schools, which was expected. Being part of a smaller class means that you probably have a close relationships with all of your classmates and teachers, meaningfully increasing the chances of getting a recommendation letter for example. Regarding teachers’ training some private schools do not require their teachers to be certified, however that doesn’t mean they can’t carry out the job. What it does mean is that, on paper, public school teachers are better educators, due to the fact that they have a proper pedagogy education.

When it comes to children with learning disabilities, Public schools are required by law to provide access to a free appropriately public education to children with disabilities all around the country and ensure special education and related services to those children, according to the U.S. Department of Education’s webpage on IDEA.

Another discussion point, that is considerably one of the most important when choosing a school, is cost. While it is true that most private schools are extremely expensive and not affordable to lower classes or minorities, this varies within different states as education might be more affordable due to state intervention. In conclusion, education is vital for our society and it doesn’t really matter what kind of education you had, as long as you got the most out of the opportunities you were given.

HowisitliketoapplytocollegeforSouth AmericanStudents?

Students from all over South America apply to US colleges every year hoping to get a different kind of education from the one available in their countries. Here are the stories of some studies who managed to get into prestigious colleges and pursue their dreams:

Rocio Jiménez, a graduated high school student from Argentina, got accepted into Harvard with a full-ride scholarship to study economics and political science. Rocio spent the entire academic year of 2022 preparing herself for the standardized tests and the application process. She had always been interested in the cultural exchange that happens during these kinds of opportunities, prior to her admission into Harvard, the Argentine student had also participated in a US-sponsored cultural exchange program named Youth Ambassadors in 2021, the next year she became part of the Yale Young Global Scholars ’22 cohort, a highly selective leadership program organized by Yale. Ultimately, Rocio learned about a famous scholarship/program, named Opportunity Funds, that allowed international students to cover the expenses of college applications while helping them every step of the way to perfect their essays, personal statements, translations, and various aspects of the process

That was the moment when she decided to start this journey in order to achieve a tremendous feat.

The student described her main extracurricular activities to be related to social sciences and humanities, among those activities, Rocio highlights being part of the student council of his school as well as being the president of her school’s social sciences club. Apart from that she also created a social media account where the recentlyadmitted Harvard student shares book reviews with her followers Moreover, Rocio helped countless peers to find their ideal career through an Instagram account (@tu vocacion ) in which she interviewed a lot of professionals in different fields, such as congresspeople from the Argentinian government, bio-engineers, political science graduates, etc.

“It wasn’t easy at all, Harvard was my favorite, however, I knew the chances of getting in were extremely low”.

Extracurricular activities, although hers were strong and consistent, were not the only thing that she had to worry about.

“Essays are a fundamental part of the application as well, I spent two months writing and reviewing my personal statement.” Said Rocio after being inquired about the most important segment of her application. In the end, she achieved something deemed unreachable for most Latin American students through hard work and her passion becoming an inspiration for many students that wish, someday, to study in the US.

“Take your time with these things, don’t be afraid to tell your story, and above all ask for help”- Said Rocio as the interview came to a close.

Moving further south, in Rosario, a USborn Argentine citizen, Valentina Ravaioli was admitted into every single college she applied to in 2021, among those the commonwealth honors college at UMass Amherst where she decided to enroll.

She is now double majoring in political science and sustainable community development.

During her time in high school, she volunteered for various organizations, she participated in the Rotary International Club as well as taking part in a political youth coalition group called Arturo Sampay, where they fought for students of their community and their rights. Valentina also volunteered in an international organization named ‘Courageous Creativity’ that promoted the learning of arts for teenagers while giving them a space where they can express themselves freely.

Leia Anapaula from Peru told us about her experience at UC Berkley.

She was admitted into the class of 2026, as a physics and computer science major given that she’s truly passionate about STEM and its variants.

This relentless student first found out about the opportunities that going to study abroad entailed, with a simple quick search on Google. She realized it wasn’t as difficult as it had been depicted to her, it was then that her journey of success began.

‘It was only a matter of seeing it for myself and realizing that the opportunities were there, I just had to go and get them’- Said the interviewed student from Peru

After that, it only took exhaustive research and getting in contact with alumni from her country to know what college suited her. Social media helped her to connect with other students that had already applied and were admitted by the same college she aspired to be a part of someday.

Leia quickly learned about all the requirements and tests she had to take in order to apply.

‘There are lots of articles and information about college, you need to learn how to organize it so you can use it to your advantage… Another important piece of advice is to write down all of your deadlines so you don’t miss any ’ – Said Leia before ending her interview

ImportantFactorsToTakeNotefor ReserachingColleges!

Throughout one ’ s high school career, the lingering question pops up continuously: where should I go to college? Now, one would instantly say a top-rated and wellknown college is best for them based on its name. However, there’s so much more to take into consideration than just the rank of the college. There are many factors that determine which college is best for you and only you! Though it takes time to gain all of this research, it will be worth it because it helps paint a picture of what your life could be like for those foursix years of your life.

The first step is to research college names on locations you want to go to, if that is your main preference. If you prefer to go to a rural college, then research. The same goes for suburbia and urban areas. If that doesn’t quite matter to you, look for specific colleges that are adequate for your major.

Now that you have your college list, it’s time to investigate all the required information! We set this information up in three categories: academic and testing, social, and financially fit. Academic and testing fit is information determined by the college. This information is the averages of GPA and SAT/ACT Please go through the numbers between the 25th and 75th percentiles of the SAT/ACT scores. That is what makes up the average scores. Having your score in between those percentiles means you ’ re in good shape to submit your score. If it’s below,

then we recommend going to the testoptional if the college offers that.

Next is the social fit. This one has the most factors to consider since this is based on the resources that you could use for your college life. They range from location, student body number, diversity, opportunities they offer within your major, athletics, Greek life, clubs, mental health resources, and so much more If any of these factors matter a lot to you, we definitely recommend focusing on them. Additional factors that can be considered can be if they offer a five-year master’s program, internships, in-school jobs, study abroad programs, and if they accept college credits from any classes you ’ ve taken from community colleges. All of this is incredibly important to delve into because remember, this is for the next 4 - 6 years of your life.

However, the most important group is the financial fit. The family determines this and what is best for all of you to afford your education. College is incredibly expensive, especially with tuition and prices going up constantly. This is why it is important to talk with your family about what you can afford or not Yes, the sticker price can look incredibly terrifying, but this is the price without taking any family income into consideration. When you add in what your family makes, the price will be determined based on that income.

Some colleges will be generous, while some aren’t. This is why you would also need to research the scholarships the colleges offer to see if there are any opportunities for you to decrease the price you and your family need to pay. Yes, there are times when people would consider taking loans, but it isn’t the best decision for the future for yourself. It’s best to graduate with as little debt as possible, so that way your independent life will be easier. Life gets expensive, and it’s best to be cautious about it.

Reach schools are schools that your numbers match, but they are competitive. You could get in, but it isn’t a guarantee since their acceptance rates are in the middle. Safety schools are where you get a higher chance of getting in. This could be based on your number being above average and the acceptance rate of the school. Not only that, the majority have good financial coverage. With these three groups in mind, a recommended number, if you are applying to ten schools, is to have three targets, four targets, and three safeties Of course, do it based on how many you want to apply to, but be cautious about how much work it can take to apply them Applying to colleges may be an exciting experience, but we don’t want you to be burnt out while doing the process.

It's time to categorize these colleges into three groups: reach, target, and safety schools. Reach schools are schools that have a low acceptance rate and are incredibly competitive. This could be your dream school, so if you want to get into those schools, do research and try your best to stand out in college as much as possible. Standing out to these colleges can also help you stand out to your reach and safety schools This is when rich schools come into play!

Hope this article helped you understand what to consider when researching your colleges! Best of luck!
