Welcome W

Dear Readers,

elcome to our Christmas edition of Roundabout Verwood. I hope you’ll agree that my choice of photo for this issue’s cover looks very festive especially with the snow lying ‘deep and crisp and even!’ Surprisingly I took this on 2nd December back in 2010 and I don’t think that we have had as much snow since then. It’s nice to see it but it just seems to hang about for too long - a bit like Christmas pudding and the turkey of course! A fascinating history of many of our Christmas traditions can be found on page 8. Apparently we used to hang the trees upside down from the ceiling - and the forerunner to our Christmas pud was called Frumenty which was a sort of fruity, spicy porridge! Both customs sound very odd! But after Googling frumenty (as you do!) it seems that Heston

with best wishes,

Blumenthal has discovered the recipe on an old Medieval manuscript and has adapted it with a modern twist which includes lobster and shell fish - which sounds even more odd for a pudding! Of course a very popular Christmas treat is chocolate and page 42 tells us how it began 4000 years ago as a cold drink with aphrodisiac and magical mood - enhancing properties. So it hasn’t changed that much at all! There are lots of other festive themed articles inside and if like me you want to treat a loved one AND help local businesses, look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 50! Finally my team and I would like to wish all our readers and advertisers old and new the very warmest of festive greetings for this Christmas and the New Year.

ROUNDABOUT VERWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE

PAST and PRESENT Westworth Farm Cottage

estworth is in the parish of Edmondsham but its lands reached right down to Eastworth with which in mediaeval days it was known by the name of “Horsych”. This settlement was then a Manor, quite separate from Verwood itself. In 1867 it was farmed by William Sweatman and contained arable land, pasture, woods, meadows and an orchard as well as a withy or reed bed. Westworth Farm is itself hidden from the road on a track to the left of the road to Alderholt but a farm cottage belonging to the estate was situated on the right of the road. For many years it was occupied by Mr Frederick Arthur Poolman whose prize vegetables were regular winners at Verwood Horticultural Show. His son Frank said knowingly that he was a carter and had access to manure! Afterwards the cottage stood derelict until it was completely restored and rebuilt into a luxury home. Westworth Farm has in recent years undergone extensive restoration and reconstruction resulting in the addition of new homes on the site. Unfortunately the farm cottage was badly damaged from a fire in 2015 but thankfully it is now back to its former glory as a beautiful home as the series of photos right illustrate.

The History of Christmas Traditions By Alison Runham

E

very year, some people mourn the loss of traditional, more faith-based Christmas celebrations. Yet most December 25th traditions are far less Christian and much more recently adopted in the UK than they may think. CELEBRATING ON DECEMBER 25TH Jesus’ birth date isn’t documented and the gospels of Matthew and Luke, written long after his death, give contradictory clues. Some scholars say the sheep on the hillside and the census suggest good weather, indicating spring to early autumn. So why is Christmas celebrated on the 25th of December? Midwinter festivals abounded by the time Christianity took hold. There were winter solstice celebrations such as Yule and Koleda, and the Roman festivals of Saturnalia (which included decorating your home with evergreens – sound familiar?) and Dies Natalis Solis Invicti, ‘birthday of the unconquered sun’, on December 25th. It was easier for early proponents of Christianity to introduce it into these longstanding festivals than to persuade people to give them up. The first Christian Roman

Emperor, Constantine, began celebrating Christmas on December 25th in 336. A few years later, Pope Julius I declared it the official date to celebrate Jesus’ birth. Some scholars believe he also chose this date to honour Hanukkah and Jesus’ own religion, Judaism. Orthodox and Coptic Christians celebrate Jesus’ birth on January the 7th - the ‘original’ December 25th. Our December 25th moved when we adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752. YULE LOGS Today, Yule logs have been mainly superseded by logshaped chocolate cakes here, but neither are connected to Jesus’ birth. Yule logs were part of the Scandinavian Yule celebration, beginning at the winter solstice and running into January. Yule logs were burned to mark the return of the sun and festivities continued until they burned out. Celts also burned a Yule log, believing it persuaded the sun to return and bestowed good luck on those who dragged it from the forest. HOLLY, IVY AND MISTLETOE Evergreens were used in winter solstice festivals to bring good luck and signify the coming spring. The tradition of hanging mistletoe in the house is an ancient Druid custom to ward off evil spirits, but in Norse mythology it’s also a

symbol of love (hence kissing under the mistletoe). CHRISTMAS PUDDING The original ‘Christmas pudding’ was frumenty, a thin 14th century porridge containing raisins, currants, prunes, wine, spices, beef and mutton. However, by around 1650, people ate plum pudding, and by Victorian times, it was similar to the modern-day Christmas pud. THE CHRISTMAS TREE Evergreen fir trees have been used in winter festivals for thousands of years to symbolise the coming spring and everlasting life, although they were often hung upside down from the ceiling rather than stood upright. ‘Christmas trees’ emerged in the 1500s in town squares but took time to come into people’s houses. The Royal Family had one from Georgian times, but an 1848 photo of Queen Victoria, Prince Albert and their family gathered around theirs popularised the idea. A MERRY CHRISTMAS Christmas wasn’t celebrated widely in the UK until the Middle Ages, when it was predominantly a time for merrymaking and feasting on animals too expensive to feed through winter. It was later banned for many years by the Puritans for its Pagan origins. It began to recover in Georgian times with a focus on charity and gift-giving, paving the way for the idealised Victorian Christmas described by Charles Dickens.

The Farmyard comes to Oakdene Care Home

M

illers Ark brought the sights, sounds and experiences of the farmyard to Oakdene Care Home in Three Legged Cross on Saturday 15th September. This event was made possible thanks to a grant from the 3LX Community Fund. It provided a welcome break from the daily routine for the residents, many of whom were able to visit the farm animals outside. The farmyard visitors ranged from larger animals such as donkeys to smaller animals which were comfortable to sit on laps such as chickens, rabbits and geese. All the visiting animals were selected to be calm and extremely friendly and the residents enjoyed the experience of stroking them, especially

R

the chickens and geese. 3LX Community Fund was set up when Homeland Solar Farm promised to provide a fund of £13,200 per year for the benefit of the community of Three Legged Cross. The fund has been available since 2014 when the Solar Farm started to generate electricity and will continue for the lifetime of the Solar Farm. To date it has provided over £30,000 for a diverse range of projects for all age groups. The Fund committee meets every 2 months and always welcomes new applications for projects or events which would improve the environment or facilities of Three Legged Cross or bring the community together.

Recent Verwood Solar Farm Fund Awards

ecent awards have proved very successful and are benefiting the community. More than 20 people have taken up Forest FM’s offer to teach them how to use the equipment, how to record and edit using specialist software, plus interview and presentation techniques. Some were so successful that their interviews have been played on air and Charlie Hassel (photo) was so good and eager that he now presents sports bulletins on a Saturday. Con-

Fighting Colds & Flu: Myths & Magic Cures By Alison Runham

Health

C

olds can make life miserable and flu can make us quite ill. But which cold and flu facts are true, and are there really any cures? If you have a high temperature, it’s the flu MYTH. Colds can sometimes cause a high temperature, although it’s usually short-lived and not above 38°C. However, sweats and chills normally indicate flu. It’s pointless to avoid someone with a cold or flu. You’ll get it anyway. MYTH. Flu and colds are highly contagious, spread by air and direct contact, but you can stay germ-free by avoiding sufferers or by both practising good hygiene. • Clean hands and highcontact surfaces regularly (e.g. door handles, touchscreens), especially after touching the nose or mouth. • Don’t share cutlery, cups or towels. • Ensure the contagious person has tissues nearby to catch coughs and sneezes, and bin them immediately. They should use the ’vampire’ cough (into the inside of their elbow) if they’re caught tissue-less. The flu vaccine doesn’t always prevent flu, so it’s not worth having. TRUTH and MYTH. Flu vaccines are produced in advance, so experts must

predict the three or four flu strains that will be prevalent next winter. While you may catch an unexpected or rarer flu strain you’re not protected from, the vaccine will protect you from most strains you’ll encounter. It’s vital if you’re vulnerable or have low immunity, e.g. if you’re a carer, over 65, pregnant or have an existing medical condition. Getting very wet and/or cold can give you a cold or the flu. MYTH (obviously). However, cold and wet conditions can put your body under stress, making it more vulnerable to germs. The flu vaccine gives you flu MYTH. The vaccine contains inactive viruses, but it may cause a temperature and aching for a while. If you’ve had a cold or flu for a while, you need antibiotics MYTH. Your doctor may give in and prescribe them, although they know antibiotics don’t kill viruses. When a patient is ‘cured’ after a week’s antibiotics, in truth that extra week just allowed them to finally fight off their virus. Antibiotics are only useful if you get a secondary bacterial infection. MAGIC CURES Research says: Prevention. Good hygiene works. Boost your immune system to help you resist viruses or fight them off by reducing stress and getting adequate sleep.

Regular zinc reduces the number of colds children get and should work for adults too. Regular probiotics and garlic may have some preventative effect, but research is sketchy. Vitamin C and echinacea really don’t prevent colds and any symptom reduction is negligible to non-existent. However, Vitamin C may be of limited benefit to people already under physical stress (e.g. marathon runners). Decongestants and antihistamines: when used separately, they have very little or no effect. However, when used together, particularly with painkillers, they may cause a slight improvement in symptoms. Ipratropium bromide (Rinatec) nasal spray does seem to alleviate symptoms, particularly a runny nose. Cough suppressants: Any benefits are negligible. Vapour rubs do seem to alleviate night time cough a little and improve sleep, but in studies over 25% of users reported burning itching sensation at the application area. NSAIDs (Non-steroidal antiinflammatories, e.g. ibuprofen) can reduce fever and help with aches and pains. If you have a cold or flu, stay hydrated, alleviate the symptoms and take heart - researchers are working to modify peptides that can combat cold viruses.

mainly because it was British, and went broke in 2005. From the ruins, Nanjing of China bought some remnants including the MG brand, the MG TF which was a highly-thought-of sports car, and some of the original Longbridge factory site, equipment, ideas and design employees. They were set to work producing designs for Chinese cars, initially using a large bank of ideas held by Rover Group which due to shortage of funds, had never been acted upon. The new Chinese owners also believed they could use the MG brand

with new products to sell into the UK - and later Europe. So, the MG brand is mainly UK-designed, but is made in China with little evidence of design/material compromise. The MG3 is the child of the still-born mid-size Rover hatchback. Now the physical stuff. There are quite a few MG3s about but probably you didn’t notice as the discreet badges are just far too small. What you saw was a very attractively styled five-door hatch looking purposeful with large alloys and grippy tyres. My car was the top ‘Style+’ slightly customised - with many wheel and body colour combinations it is difficult to imagine that any two MG3s will look the same. Inside, leather seats and some very neat, tasteful styling touches concentrating upon an oval shaped theme - this works very well indeed. This top version included a full array of instruments MG style, automatic climate control, DAB radio with bluetooth and device connectivity, while safety and convenience were well catered for with auto lights with auto-dip, auto wipers auto emergency brake and so on. But to drive? Not a ball of fire, yet still getting to 60 in 10 seconds and this is the best to expect

with a very low insurance group rating of 4E. A slick 5-speed gearbox helps you through the gears seamlessly but as the gearing is rather ‘short’ in the interest of performance, it can get a nice kind of ‘buzzy’ as it builds up to cruise. Large wheels with grippy tyres give truly great road-holding and handling in the true MG tradition. My one sticking point is a very hard, knobbly ride which tells me that either MG have forgotten how to do suspension, or they designed this setup for smooth first-world roads (Europe) rather than the 3rd-world roads of the UK. In summary, this car is simply very useable and a delight to drive, just for the sake of driving. Full circle back to my ‘surprise’. How good to drive, how practical this car is, and at such a low price point. With four price levels too and finance plans which take all the buying pain away, with very economical running costs and cheap insurance, this is an ideal entry point into motoring for many people. Nice one!

By Mike Wattam

o somebody who reckons to be pretty savvy about cars and the car industry, to be majorly caught out in a few months about a car is a real shock especially when the surprise comes from the very same car maker. Thus it was again with MG, whose model ‘3’ is the subject of this month’s appraisal. But first the backdrop. MG was a sporty brand of Rover group which was reviled

biscuits. But then her mother has a stroke and Elvira has to find her own way in the world. With a great storyline, wellrounded characters and plenty of humour to boot, Frances Maynard’s debut novel is a triumph.

Masala Eggy Bread. Recipes are simple to follow, with attractive photographs and engaging introductions.

For fans of Sarah Waters and Susanna Clarke. The Mermaid and Mrs Hancock – Imogen Hermes Gowar The year is 1785 and widower John Hancock finds himself the owner of what appears to be a dead mermaid. The artefact proves the talk of the town and gains John access to a whole new circle of society, a society that includes the alluring courtesan, Angelica Neal. 18th century London is brought vividly to life in this enchanting debut novel.

Love dystopian fiction such as The Hunger Games and Divergent? Try… The Gender Game – Bella Forrest In Violet Bates’s world, women rule. Men have few rights and boys can be sent away if they’re deemed capable of aggression. Across the river it’s another story – in Patrus men have the power. Violet is serving time in a detention facility when she’s offered the chance to have her slate wiped clean, in return for completing a mission in Patrus. An enjoyable, easy read.

Love a good psychological thriller? Add this to your wish list. The Stolen Child – Sanjida Kay Without giving too much away, The Stolen Child centres around Zoe, Ollie and their daughter, Evie. Evie was adopted by the couple from birth, but starts to receive letters and gifts from a man claiming to be her father. A man who says he wants her back. Full of twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

Enjoyed The Rosie Project and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time? Try… The Seven Imperfect Rules of Elvira Carr – Frances Maynard Elvira doesn’t see the world in quite the same way as most people. As a result, she lives a fairly sheltered life, caring for her overbearing mother and indulging her interest in

Fans of The Great British Bake Off will be clamouring for this one… Nadiya’s British Food Adventure – Nadiya Hussain As Nadiya says, British food today is a melting pot of cuisines from different cultures. This book reflects that, with twists to classic British dishes and more modern favourites. The book ties in with Nadiya’s latest TV series, so includes several of the dishes featured on the show. You’ll find recipes such as Minted Lamb and Apple Pasties, Mango and Passionfruit Jam Roly Poly and

If you like Neil Gaiman and Philip Pullman, try… Hannah Green and Her Unfeasibly Mundane Existence – Michael Marshall Smith Eleven year old Hannah Green finds the world isn’t quite as mundane as she thought, when it turns out her grandfather is in league with the devil. The world is out of kilter, and the unlikely trio have to work together to put things right. A thoroughly enjoyable read, with great descriptions, bags of humour and believable characters.

The Mayor gets taken to the cleaners!

T

he Mayor attended the opening of Mason’s Dry Cleaners and Laundry Services on Tuesday 3rd October 2017. Cheryl Mason who has now taken over the business lives in Verwood and has worked in the shop for 14 years. The Mayor said a few words and then officially opened the shop. Additional Security at Moors Valley Park & Forest

M

oors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood is increasing its security following a recent night-time burglary which targeted the awardwinning attraction’s pay stations. The additional security means the Park is now staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tracey Churcher, Recreation Manager for the Forestry Commission at Moors Valley said, “Following a recent night-time burglary which targeted the pay stations at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, we have decided to

T

increase security on site to ensure the park is staffed 24-hours a day, seven days a week. “These rare incidents are very disappointing but we hope the additional security will prevent any further issues and provide reassurance to all our visitors that there will always be a staff member on site even when the Visitor Centre is closed.” For more information on Moors Valley’s autumn and Christmas events go to: www.moors-valley.co.uk

The end of the traditional Tax Return

he traditional completion by a taxpayer of a lot of information in a tax return is being replaced by a simple assessment. Under the new simple assessment, rather than asking taxpayers to fill in a self-assessment with lots of information, HMRC will now use data it already holds and calculate the tax owed. Such data would include income and benefits in kind from employment, pensions, state benefits and savings interest. Taxpayers who receive a simple assessment letter (PA302) or a P800 tax calculation from HMRC should immediately check that the information is correct and query anything that they are not happy with, within 60 days. Otherwise the tax liability becomes binding and payable.

The new simple assessment will apply to: • New state pensioners with income more than their personal allowances; • PAYE taxpayers who have underpaid tax and can no longer have it collected through a PAYE tax code. Pensioners whose income is only just over their personal allowance will remain in self-assessment for 2016/17 but be put into the new simple assessment regime for 2017/18. Taxpayers with more complex tax affairs will continue doing selfassessment but, according to HMRC, will be asked only for information needed to assess their tax, benefits and credits. For the complete HMRC briefing document dated 22 September 2017 see: - https://www. gov.uk/government/publications/issue-briefingsimple-assessment-ending-the-tax-return

Beauty

Handbag essentials to transform you from frazzled office worker to fabulous partygoer in minutes.

Tis The Season To Party

W

Beauty

ork deadlines plus shopping, wrapping, cooking and dealing with family life can leave you feeling rather frazzled. Try a spritz of Tisserand De-Stress Mist to keep the tension down. The blend of calming essential oils, including geranium, orange, nutmeg, rose and jasmine smells lovely and really does seem to help soothe the senses. Not keen on sprays? The blend is also available as a roller-ball. The De-Stress Mist is priced at £8.95 and the De-Stress Rollerball at £5.95, from www. tisserand.com. Dry, chapped lips are not a good look and matte lipsticks often highlight the problem. Clarins’ Instant Light Natural Lip Perfector is a great alternative. It’s available in several shades and leaves lips feeling soft, hydrated and plumped, while adding a touch of colour and shine. It is more of a gloss than a lipstick,

so the colour and shine won’t last for hours, but it’s well worth the extra applications. A fullsized Lip Perfector is £18, but if you’re quick you may be able to snap up a mini one for a bargain price with one of Clarins’ Christmas giftsets, see www.clarins.co.uk. You can’t have failed to notice that brows are having their moment in the spotlight. Whether you prefer a bold bushy arch à la Lily Collins or something a bit more

streamlined, a good brow pencil is invaluable. High Definition’s Browtec Pencil is a great choice. It has a fine, retractable tip so you can achieve precise strokes; it’s topped with a brush; and the colour stays put all day. £16 from www. beautyinhighdefinition.com. High Definition has also released a Limited Edition Copper Eyeshadow Palette that’s definitely deserving of a place in your arsenal. The rose gold, copper and bronze shades work beautifully together to create a look that’s perfect for parties.

by Kate Duggan

The three shades come with a mirror and double-headed brush, all housed in a very compact case. £23.50, www. beautyinhighdefinition.com. Don’t fancy carrying your makeup loose in your handbag? Christmas is the perfect time to treat yourself to a new cosmetics bag. On a bit of a tight budget? Lots of gift sets have a case included for free, or check out TK Maxx for luxury options at a fraction of the price. Pencil cases also do the job just as well, with the added advantage of often being waterproof. The Paperchase Glamingo Pencil Case is just £7. The extra pocket at the front is perfect for makeup brushes and other extras. See www.paperchase. co.uk.

Canada Glimpses of Toronto

Toronto, CN Tower and Rogers Centre on Harbourfront, seen from the lake.

T

hrough the leafy gorge of the river Don the city rises like a mirage on the horizon, a gleaming cluster of buildings dwarfed by the slender silhouette of the CN Tower. At just over 553 metres, Toronto’s communication tower is the tallest free-standing structure in the Western hemisphere and the city’s most iconic landmark. Lifts take you to the observation platform with its glass floor said to withstand the weight of 14 hippos and provide access to the SkyPod 100 metres above. The view takes your breath away, from the wooded ravines and sprawling city to the meandering shore of Lake Ontario and the lush ribbon of islands where town folks can escape and connect with nature. In clear weather the spray from Niagara Falls, over 70 km away, is visible.

Travel

But before making your way to the Falls, as most visitors do, it is worth spending time in this ‘most lovable’ North American city with record temperatures of highs and lows but on the same latitude as the French Riviera. Trams glide through the streets at a leisurely pace, tulips nod in the parks and hundreds of rooftop gardens, now compulsory in all major

developments, freshen up the air. The original settlers, known as First Nation, had long lived in the area when Europeans arrived in the early 17th century. The French set up a fur trade but were later replaced by the British, who bought the land from the First Nation for the princely sum of £1,700 plus merchandise. Yet it was only with the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century that the city truly blossomed. According to BBC Radio, Toronto is ‘one of the world’s most diverse cities’, home to 230 nationalities, speaking 160 languages and accounting for an inner city population of 2.8 million. So Ontario’s provincial capital is larger than Ottawa or any other Canadian city. But laid out as it is on a grid pattern, it is surprisingly easy to explore on foot, from the business centre to Little Italy, China Town, Portugal Village or the bustling Dundas Square on Yonge Street, the place for casual eating, nightlife and cheap theatre tickets. Old and new mingle effortlessly: here the historic Parliament and University buildings, there the old City Hall with a clock tower reminiscent of Big

By Solange Hando Ben, the stylish harmonious complex of the New City Hall, just steps away, the multipurpose Rogers Centre, home to the Blue Jays baseball team and concert venue think Madonna or the Rolling Stones - or the Union Station opened by the Prince of Wales in 1927. Markets beckon with local colour, St Lawrence for fresh produce, Kensington for all things hippy, arty and cool, while the ultimate shopping therapy is found in the vast Eaton Centre. For top designer wear or celebrity spotting, however, it’s the Mink Mile in the Bloor-Yorkville district. Then you can wander the cobbled lanes of the Distillery Historic District, lined with bakeries and micro-breweries, visit the Royal Ontario Museum or the Ripley’s Aquarium where you can pet a stingray, or chill out under pink parasols on the imported sands of Sugar Beach. Then there are restaurants and ice cream parlours, coffee and cake shops, but sooner or later the lake calls you back with ferries to the islands and boats cruising nonchalantly along the harbour front, past the mighty CN Tower which dominates the skyline wherever you are in Toronto.

Unhealthy Kindness

A

re you the kind of person who will turn yourself inside out for others? Do you find it hard to say no and will compromise your own levels of emotional comfort just to keep the peace? Often people grow up with the belief of having to keep the peace in their relationships which means that they are unable to genuinely give to others without their kindness being exploited in some way. What usually happens is that you end up exploiting yourself. People will say ‘yes’ when they mean ‘no’. Sometimes the very thought of saying ‘no’ can create an overwhelming feeling of guilt and fear of rejection/ abandonment and this may have been a reality in a person’s life. Abandonment is a primal fear which affects us all but especially so when we have experienced emotional or physical abandonment. A person may have learnt not to ask for what they truly want in a relationship, as previously their wants and needs have not been heard or have been denied in some way. As a child they may have remembered saying ‘no’ or doing something which resulted in isolation or abandonment. This repeated pattern slowly chips away at the strength of a person’s voice and the belief they have in themselves. Sometimes a person believes that they are responsible for another person’s feelings and if they say ‘no’ then they will cause that person pain and discomfort. They often feel that they need to make everyone happy and it is difficult for them to consider what they really want. When kindness comes from a place of uneasiness then it’s not true kindness. These questions may help to you to work out if your kindness is unhealthy are;

Winter Driving Tips

Stop! When snow is falling fast, don’t drive unless you really have to. In terrible weather, putting things off until conditions improve is best. Winter ailments can leave you exhausted and sluggish. If you don’t feel like you can drive safely, don’t risk it. Car maintenance Keeping the car well maintained is doubly important in winter. Worn tyres won’t hold the road in wet conditions as well as those with a good, deep tread. Make sure all exterior lights are working and that windscreen wiper blades are in good condition. Check the oil, coolant and washer fluid levels. In the wet Take simple precautions when driving in heavy rain. Slow down: the wetter the roads, the longer your braking distance, and the heavier the rain, the worse your visibility. Drive cautiously and leave a good distance between

you and the vehicle in front. In snow and ice Again, slow down and leave plenty of room between you and the vehicle in front. Use your headlights if necessary. Brake and accelerate gently. It’s not always easy to tell if you’re driving on ice, though if your tyres are making less noise than usual you may well be. If you do skid, don’t brake – you’ll lock the wheels and lose control. Instead, depress the clutch and steer into the direction of the skid. When the car straightens, steer as normal. Emergency Stopping Apply the brake, without locking the wheels. If the vehicle starts to skid, ease pressure from the pedal and then reapply. Press the clutch in just before you stop. Safe winter motoring!

s winter progresses the lakes are continuing to fill up with ducks and the numbers will tend to peak now in December. Even if you are a beginner to bird watching there is nothing quite like sitting in a bird hide and watching ducks peacefully feeding on the lake with the occasional squabble. As a duck watcher you can start to sort out the different species by observing how they feed. The pintail, a duck with a long neck and as the name suggests a long tail too, is a dabbling duck. It feeds by dabbling its beak in the water sifting out plants and insects. Another dabbler is the wigeon which feeds on aquatic plants and can also be seen out of the water grazing the grass on the banks. The shoveler also dabbles but in a much more entertaining way! It uses its huge spatula like bill to sift the water but at the same time will often spin round and round in an

attempt to create currents in the water which bring the food to them. Look out for groups of shoveler congregating together and spinning around collectively, an impressive site when in large numbers! Moving away from the water and into the woodland, bird watching continues to be enjoyable as the bare trees leave fewer places for the birds to hide. The woodland hide is always busy as birds flock to the feeders for an easy meal, with winter visitors to look out for including siskin, redpoll and brambling. To discover the historical back story behind many of Blashford’s more familiar birds, join local author and wildlife photographer Dr Simon Wills for an evening talk on Tuesday 5th December, from 7.30pm until 9.30pm. Hopefully, you’ll come away having been entertained, and with some good tales to share next time you’re waiting in a hide for a bittern or kingfisher to appear! Please book your

space by telephoning 01425 472760, suggested donation £4 per person. As the New Year approaches the first flowers begin to appear including small patches of snowdrops. The first fungi of the year will also be starting to show. The scarlet elf cup feeds on dead wood and thrives in our wet woodland habitats. As its name suggests it is a bright red cup shaped fungus which creates a welcoming splash of colour amongst the leaf litter. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. O

History

ur favourite confectionery, chocolate dates back four thousand years to Central America where indigenous Indian tribes produced an antecedent very different to today’s. Although debated, the word chocolate is said to come from the Mayan term ‘xocalatl’ meaning ‘bitter water’. It was the Mayans who first cultivated the cacao plant growing in the rainforests of Mesoamerica - an area that today encompasses Mexico, Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras. They fermented, roasted and ground the beans of the plant into a paste that they would mix with water and spices to produce a potent frothy bitter liquor. Drunk cold, it was an aphrodisiac with magical mood-enhancing properties.

On conquering the Mayans, the Aztecs - who lived in the mountains where cacao did not grow naturally demanded a tax in cacao seeds so that they could control and cultivate the beans themselves. Cacao seeds became a currency for the Aztecs and were used to buy everything from produce to prostitutes! Believed to be a gift from their god of creation and wisdom, Quetzalcoatl, cacao was so precious that chocolate was reserved for those of importance such as rulers,

The History of Chocolate by Catherine Rose warriors and priests, and often drunk from gold vessels during religious ceremonies. Women were not permitted to partake. Conquistadors took chocolate back to Spain in the 16th century where they added sugar to sweeten it. Soon, the custom of drinking chocolate had spread across Europe. Cocoa plantations were set up in tropical regions of the various colonies. It wasn’t until 1828 that the solid sweet chocolate we know today was born. Casparus van Houten invented the hydraulic cocoa press which separated cocoa butter (contained in the bean’s nib) from cocoa mass. This ground mass became the basis for modern chocolate. Casparus’ son Coenraad van Houten, a chemist, continued his father’s work, adding alkaline salts to remove the naturally bitter taste. By using the ‘Dutching method’ that combined and heated the mass with water, cocoa butter and sugar, Coenraad produced a thick chocolate paste which then hardened inside moulds into a delicious confectionery. When van Houten’s patent expired in 1836, other companies started manufacturing their own chocolate. In 1847, J.S.

Fry & Sons produced the first commercial chocolate bar in England. Although it was not as palatable as the chocolate we eat today, people were enthralled, and the company launched their eponymous Fry’s Chocolate Cream in 1866. That same year, Richard and George Cadbury, philanthropists who had taken over their father’s cocoa business, purchased one of van Houten’s cocoa presses. They began producing boxes of chocolates at their Birmingham factory. In 1875 they unveiled their first dark chocolate Easter egg filled with chocolate dragees. The Swiss have long been at the forefront of chocolatemaking and in the same year that Cadbury produced its first Easter egg, the first milk chocolate bar was made by a Swiss confectioner named Daniel Peter after he added condensed milk to the chocolate-making process. Then in 1879, Rodolphe Lindt invented the conching machine. The machine agitated the chocolate mixture and revolutionised its texture, making a much smoother, more velvety paste. The early part of the 20th century saw an explosion in the availability of chocolate with names that are still popular 100 years later. Cadbury’s Dairy Milk was launched in 1905 made with ‘more milk than any other chocolate bar’. In 1914, Fry’s Turkish Delight was produced. Then in 1915, Milk Tray came onto the market - the first box of chocolates affordable to all.

PETS

Take Extra Care of Your Pets this Christmas

Pets

All the trimmings and paraphernalia of Christmas are wonderful for us, but they can represent a danger to your pet. So with this in mind, what in particular do you need to watch out for at this time of year? Christmas decorations If your pet has a tendency to chew, be wary of your Christmas tree lights as they may cause electrocution. Glass baubles also break very easily and it’s difficult to spot the smaller shards of glass, which

can easily lodge in a pet’s paws or mouth – a particular problem if your cat is prone to climbing the tree. Chocolate Chocolate contains a substance called theobromine, which is poisonous to dogs and cats. Dark chocolate has the highest amount, although milk chocolate also causes potentially life-threatening symptoms if consumed. It’s a serious issue at any time of the year, but at Christmas the fact that you’re likely to have more chocolate in the house increases the risk. Rich foods Turkey meat is too rich for many dogs – they struggle to digest this fatty food which

can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. High fat foods in general tend to irritate your pet’s stomach and intestines, so it’s a good idea to stick to their usual diet as much as possible during the festive season. Whether your pet is timid or bold, providing a safe place where they can retreat from the noise and chaos of Christmas helps them to cope until their normal routine resumes. www.thehealthypetclub. co.uk/top-tips-pets-christmas/ www.timeforpaws.co.uk/blog/ top-10-hazards-for-pets-atchristmas-time/ By Ann Haldon
