Dear Readers,

ike me, do you wonder, how on earth we ever managed without our smart phones? The sophistication and operating speed has just increased so dramatically in recent years that I can’t really contemplate life without one now. Just so much choice of really quite useful apps that you forget what you have downloaded and how many functions that little bit of pocket sized technology can perform! A veritable 21st century Swiss Army Knife in fact! In this issue we have a couple of articles where the smartphone has become a surprisingly useful tool! Page 8 is all about online dating apps and apparently in an HTC smartphone survey, 37% of people had met a partner via a dating app! I suppose I was initially amazed

with best wishes,

but that way you can at least assume you have some common ground initially which is a pretty good start! And on page 10 Moors Valley Country Park have a really clever app combining technology and nature with what’s called an augmented reality app! All very clever to encourage children to get out into the park and search for the Gruffalo - I think! And as I write the weather has finally decided to improve so check out our What’s On pages 28 and 30 for lots of other things to do in the lovely Spring sunshine! So if you need a job done or want to treat yourself or a loved one at this time of year AND help local businesses, look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 50 and save yourself time, fuel and most importantly - money!

ROUNDABOUT

ROUNDABOUT VERWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE

PAST and PRESENT Verwood Methodist Church, Vicarage Road. Early 20th Century

M

ethodist worship has been strong in Verwood for well over a hundred and fifty years. In 1847 it was mentioned as being in the Salisbury circuit of the Primitive Methodist Church, though it is likely that worship was conducted in homes or barns. In 1853 Open Air Services were being held and a Primitive Methodist Chapel was erected in 1876 on the site of the present methodist Church . The imposing Methodist Church in the March 2017

old photo above incorporated a hall to the right and was built 1909 in Vicarage Road. It replaced the old Primitive Methodist Chapel on the same site. Later the surrounding brick wall was removed and an exterior hall added in the rear grounds. A larger, modern permanent Hall was added at the rear and opened on 4th February 1984. In 1993 under the ministry of Rev. Chris Blake, the church was extensively enlarged and redesigned with attractive glass panelled doors fronting the pavement. The ‘new’ church reopened in January 1994. The colour change on the roof quite clearly shows the relatively recent extension and the new entrance and porch to the front. The hall appears much as it was with two rooflights replacing the single dormer. The properties to the far left in the old photo still stand but are now hidden by the Verwood Town Council offices from this viewpoint.

Online Dating: Not Just For Twentysomethings by Kate McLelland

Life Begins

M

y sympathies were aroused the first time I met Abby, a friend-of-a-friend who had recently moved to my neighbourhood after a divorce. Aged 47, she had made the move in order to seek a different life for herself and her fifteen-year-old son. However, two years later my sympathy began to wear a little thin, after she repeatedly turned up at my house bemoaning the lack of eligible men in her life. On every occasion I would remind her that online dating was her best option for meeting a new partner, but she remained stubbornly unmoved. The process of online dating is very simple: just create a profile, check out potential matches, communicate with your chosen date and then arrange to meet. Given the scare stories we hear about fake profiles, romance frauds and stalking, Abby was right to be cautious, but probably not to the point of spoiling her best statistical chances of finding love. Staying safe online It’s natural to feel a little nervous about meeting a stranger for the first time, but there are certain common sense precautions you can take to stay safe. • Choose a username that

doesn’t reveal who you are and don’t give away your surname, contact information, home address or place of work when first setting up your profile. • Don’t give away too much information about yourself right away. Take things slowly, sharing more information when you feel comfortable to do so. • Never release financial information or give in to pressure to lend money. • Meet in public and stay in public on your first couple of dates and always let a friend know where you are, and who you’re meeting. Setting up a successful online dating profile The UK dating site Match.com says that when registering with a site it’s important to answer questions accurately for the best possible chance of finding your ideal match. When writing about your personality they recommend reading other profiles for inspiration or asking a friend to describe your characteristics. For maximum impact, start the description with an eye-catching opening paragraph, using key words relating to your passions and interests. The dating site Zoosk found that women get 60% more attention if their profile photo is

taken indoors, while men get 19% more attention if theirs is taken outside, particularly if the photo includes other friends or involves an active pursuit. What do I have to pay? Some sites are free to join, whereas an average paidfor site might cost between £13 and £50 per month. Some online services charge considerably higher membership fees. Are there sites specifically for mature people? You don’t have to restrict yourself to age-specific sites unless you feel more comfortable in doing so. Two of the most popular sites for UK dating are ukmaturedating. com and maturefreeandsingle. com. The popularity of online sites has boomed recently with the addition of mobile apps, with 37% of people surveyed by smartphone manufacturer HTC saying they had met a partner via a dating app. The message has finally got through to Abby, who went on her first date through an online site last week. Unfortunately he wasn’t the man of her dreams, but she nevertheless enjoyed the date. Thanks to that experience, she’s confident that it’s now only a matter of time before she meets Mr Right.

The Gruffalo come to life with new app!

I

n the first development of its kind, Forestry Commission England and Magic Light Pictures are bringing The Gruffalo characters to life in the Moors Valley forest through a new, free, augmented reality app. Moors Valley Country Park and Forest, near Ringwood is one of only 26 locations across England where visitors can join the Gruffalo Spotter adventure through the deep dark wood. Families can follow clues on an interactive trail and track signs of their favourite characters based on The Gruffalo, the best-selling picture book written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The self-led trail is packed with fun facts about forest animals with fantastic activities along the way. Once families have spotted the characters, they can use the app to bring the 3D character animation to life and take photos alongside them. These photos are automatically added to the device’s gallery, where they can be shared via social media using the hashtag #GruffaloSpotters. Taking family forest walks to new heights, the app mixes technology with the real world, encouraging children to get exploring, firing their imaginations and enabling them to have an all-new forest experience at Moors Valley. The Gruffalo Spotter’s app has been de-

veloped and animated by Nexus Studios and is available for free with no in-app purchases from the App Store and Google Play. A Gruffalo Spotters kit will be available to buy on site and includes animal facts, tips for tracking wildlife, an evidence collection bag, a magnifying glass and a pencil to make a note of your forest finds! Katie Davies, Communications Ranger at Moors Valley said, “Moors Valley was the first country park in the country to have an official Gruffalo Trail and we are delighted to now be one of the first to bring the Gruffalo to life with this amazing new technology. Thousands of children have already had wonderful adventures in our deep dark woods thanks to Julia Donaldson’s amazingly imaginative stories, now thousands more will be able to build on those adventures, bringing their favourite character to life at Moors Valley with the simple use of a very clever, free app.” The Gruffalo Spotters trail and The Gruffalo Spotter app launch at Moors Valley Country Park and Forest on 6 March and run until the end of December 2017. The Gruffalo Spotters app is free from the App Store, Google Play and Amazon and requires downloading before your visit. A preview of the app is available at http://tinyurl. com/hgga5qt

Grass Snake pring has certainly sprung at Blashford Lakes Nature Reserve. Our overwintering flocks of ducks and geese will have departed, whilst migrant birds including swallows, swifts and martins will be arriving after their impressive journeys back to our shores. If you watch the surface of the lakes you should catch them displaying acrobatically over head as they feed. On the shore waders including little ringed plover, lapwing and dunlin will be showing as they too go in search of food. If the weather is fine the air should begin to come alive with the buzzing of insect wings whilst a grass snake might be glimpsed sunning itself on the logs in front of Ivy South hide. Leaves will be breaking bud with their brilliant fresh green colour now filling the woodlands, along with the flowering ground ivy, bluebells and violets and carpets of yellow primroses. On Friday 14th April you can join us for a self-guided

Willow Warbler

Easter Nature Trail, in search of spring wildlife and other seasonal highlights. Drop in to the Education Centre anytime from 11am until 2.30pm and allow 1 to 1&1/2hours for the activity. The dipping pond behind the Education Centre is a brilliant spot to sit and watch for recently emerged dragonflies, including the downy emerald and emperor. Damselfly species such as beautiful demoiselle, common blue, azure and blue tailed should also be on the wing. On Wednesday 19th April from 10.30am until 11.30am you can discover the wonderful wildlife lurking in the weedy depths of the Blashford pond by joining us for a family pond dip. We’ll supply the nets and expertise for fantastic family freshwater fun! Please telephone to book your place. The dawn chorus will be in full swing with birds busy mating and nesting. April is the month to listen out for the cuckoo as it arrives back from its African wintering grounds.

Their distinctive call swells an ever growing chorus which is noticeably louder by the day, as birds including garden, reed and willow warblers, blackcap and chiffchaff carve out their feeding territories. Join the Reserves Officer for a guided walk around the reserve in search of Blashford’s spring birds on either Wednesday 26th April or Monday 15th May, from 10am until 12noon. Please telephone 01425 472760 to book your place. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Sembcorp Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. Viewed From My W indow A small selection of short stories written by Patricia Oliver from Horton near Wimborne, describing the ups and downs of caring for feral cats over the years with photos by J Santana-Martin.

T

Lost: Babes in the Wood-part 1

inker, the lovely little cat we rescued from the burger bar on a local industrial estate, escaped from the house before we could get her neutered. She needed her freedom, so we kept a close eye on the security camera we keep in the barn, and there she was, so we were relieved she knew where to come for food. We searched around to see where she was sleeping and eventually found her sleeping in a large shed the pathway to which was obscured by foliage, so for us it was difficult to get to. We decided to clear the way so we could keep a better eye on her. We then set a trap to catch her again which we did and we placed her in a very large cage 12ft x 8ft which was sited in the barn. She had all she could wish for in there, but next morning she had managed to lift the chicken wire covering from the bottom and she had escaped. She was so determined to be free. She was born a feral cat, had survived on her own until we took her in, she was indeed a free spirit! Later we could see from the camera that she had become pregnant and we were very concerned for her but now she was no longer in the large shed and we had no idea where she was, but every night the camera showed her coming for food. We could not do any more for her, we just kept an eye out and sometimes she would appear from nowhere with that stare that said so much. For two nights at the end of May she did not come for food, we suspected she had given birth to her litter during that time so started to search for them, but we could not find them. It was an exciting time and we counted the days carefully keeping an eye for any signs they were on the move and at the end of 2 months we expected them to start appearing. We were surprised therefore when the camera again showed that Tinker was pregnant. Was

this possible when she was still feeding her first litter of kittens? We spoke to the Vet and he told us that if there is a male cat in the vicinity it would stimulate her to come into season, even if she is still feeding her litter. Now we had the prospect of a second litter although it was a daunting prospect having perhaps a total of 6 new kittens to feed. We waited and kept an eye on the camera, but no sign of the first kittens, only a pregnant Tinker coming to dinner. The 27th of August looked to have been the day of arrival for the second litter as she did not come overnight for food. Tinker We started another search, we found a track she had made and it led to a storm drain which ran under the road. Was this where she had hidden the kittens? Were there now 2 litters living under the road in a storm drain? We examined the area and realized we could not do this rescue alone so we telephoned the RSPCA and an inspector came, looked at the storm drain, but did not know how he would extract the cat and kittens, he went away. This was Friday. Sunday I was expecting visitors so went to the gate to open it and saw to my horror our little Tinker dead in the road! It must have just happened as she was still warm and bleeding, but I could see she was dead. Now we had a problem, two litters of kittens and we were not certain where they were. The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £15.00 + £2.50 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on: 01202 826244. Any proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

Mike's Motors

By Mike Wattam

The Power to Surprise?

K

ia originates from South Korea, although now owned by another Korean company, Hyundai. This corporation has established design studios in California and Germany to enable car designs intended to fit Western expectations. To complete the circle, many Kia and Hyundai cars are manufactured within the European Union for sale across Europe. HyundaiKia has big ambitions, initially benchmarking Toyota across the board to enable them to make a concerted onslaught upon Europe and this worked to a degree - only later realising they needed to be better on all fronts than Toyota to secure both sales volume and profitability. With typical Korean impatience and determination, this has been achieved. The subject of our test is the “Kia Optima Sportwagon 1.7CRDi ‘GT-Line S’ 7-speed auto DCT ISG”, I thought you might like to memorise this. Personally, I called it Bruce. Bruce is a Mondeo-size estate car with a small-ish diesel engine and a quick-shift automatic gearbox, with top-dog interior appointments and all the electronics they could find from the toy cupboard. Whichever way you cut it, you would need a really wide car to fit that long description on the tailgate. The Series 1 Optima was offered only in saloon format and was very similar to it’s sister car, the Hyundai i40 which was bargainbasement priced

and bought in much larger numbers, also being offered as a ‘wagon’, where it had much success as a private hire taxi. Frankly the design was weirdly oriental, with quality and finish strangely wanting. It was a so-so drive, with a small engine struggling to achieve acceptable acceleration and missing out on economy. Kia set their prices and sales expectations low, aiming mainly at the fleet market. Puzzlingly, the otherwise similar cars imported into North America came with a whole range of alternative engines and luxury packages which were denied to the UK and Europe, and achieved far more sales success there. Now roll out the new Series 2. Bruce is a thoroughly reengineered car, he looks very upper-bracket European while maintaining typical Kia design signatures, and in his rangetopping GT-Line identity very handsome, even if the large, wide Kia grille looks somewhat aggressive. The Sportwagon body style has been added, so practicality for larger loads is greatly enhanced, although limited by the steeply sloped tailgate. Step inside, and interior quality has taken a quantum leap to something akin to Audi quality and luxury,

while pushing the frontiers of technology much further. This is a car to be visually admired. However, it retains a 1.7 litre Diesel engine which now has both improved power and economy, so on-road performance is somewhat improved, aided by the automatic gearbox which is of the DCT type, using electronics to change gears seamlessly in a traditional cog-type gearbox. All good so far. But how does this translate into on-the-road experience? On this top version, plenty of seat and steering wheel adjustment enables a comfortable driving position. A clear array of quality major dials, symbols, switches and mirrors together give an excellent first impression and promote driving confidence. Comfort is also high in the rear seats. Noticeable Diesel rattle is present until hot, and road rumble and jiggling are transmitted into the passenger compartment through the very large tyres. Speed sensitive steering allows the car to be placed precisely and the engine-gearbox combination is adequate in cut-andthrust traffic situations, while motorway cruising is smooth and quiet. In summary, a good compromise between comfort and a sporty, confident drive. This is a car is one you would actively want to drive and with a price range from £23-30,000 depending on specification, is a good deal in medium-large load carriers. Thanks, Bruce.

Have we become the stuff of Classic Comedy? by Kate McLelland

Life Begins

I

f you belong to the Baby Boomer generation (born between 1946 and 1964) you’ve probably noticed that the programmes you watched on TV when you were young are now available everywhere, with episodes on YouTube and repeats on mainstream television – not to mention the opportunity to binge on box sets. But there is a downside: gone are the days when we could watch as young people, laughing at the follies of the old. This time around we are more likely to see a reflection of ourselves. Walk into any party where Baby Boomers are gathered together, and you’ll recognise some familiar types: The Art of Grumpiness Since the character of Victor Meldrew appeared in One Foot in the Grave, we’ve turned being grumpy into an art form, with Grumpy Old Women theatre tours, Grumpy Old Men birthday cards and “grumpy” celebrities like Lord Alan Sugar. As you enter the party it won’t be hard to find a present-day Victor Meldrew. Follow the loudest voice in the room to overhear a blow-by-blow account of his latest victory over “faceless bureaucracy”. Envy Thy Neighbour The one-upmanship

demonstrated by Hyacinth Bucket in Keeping Up Appearances is far from dead. Last year in a survey of 1,016 UK adults, 13% said they envied a neighbour’s home, while 80% were prepared to spend £100+ on home accessories to impress the people next door. Today’s Hyacinth is likely to be the hostess of the party, standing in her perfectlyplanned kitchen, surrounded by every conceivable gadget. The canapés may have been delivered by Waitrose, but you can bet the wine came from the budget supermarket across town.

2007 and 2015…

Love thy Landlord We all loved to hate Rupert Rigsby in Rising Damp. Rigsby was the penny-pinching, vain, boastful and cowardly landlord who lorded it over a household of seedy bedsits. Of the two million buy-to-let landlords in the UK, many are Baby Boomers who have invested in property to supplement their pensions. Most are, of course, model landlords: but as the wine flows more freely, don’t be surprised if you overhear some less than scrupulous Boomers swapping tips about how to disguise a damp patch. Perhaps that’s why we’ve seen an almost twentyfold rise in tenants’ complaints between

Research suggests that we tend to grow more eccentric with age. “Younger people modify their behaviour to social norms,” says Peter Tyrer, a professor from Imperial College London. “But as people get older, there is evidence of reduced plasticity of the nervous system.” In simple terms, that means we become more set in our ways and cease to care what others think.

Good for the planet Of course, not all of us have become grumpy, envious or dishonest in our old age. Some have learned to respect the environment and live sustainably. These are the guests who like Tom and Barbara from The Good Life - arrive late via public transport, proffering a box of freshly-laid eggs. They love nothing better than to air their views on ‘green’ topics and you’ll enjoy chatting to these people, until they point out that your lifestyle is destroying the planet.

Perhaps it’s not all bad. We feel affection for TV’s classic comedy creations precisely because of their unique and quirky character traits. Let’s hope that as we age, people will learn to love us in the same way.

Bullying What To Do If You Think Your Child Is Being Bullied. by Kate Duggan

Parenting

W

hile we all like to think that our child will tell us if something is wrong, there are lots of reasons they might keep quiet about being bullied. They may feel ashamed, or worried that you’ll be disappointed in them. They may have been threatened to keep quiet. Or they could be concerned about what you’ll do. You can’t rely on your child to tell you in words what’s happening, but you can look for any signs, such as: • A reluctance to attend school. • Acting more withdrawn, anxious or moody. • Clothing becoming torn or dirty more frequently. • Items going missing. • An increase in bruises or scratches. The above signs may not indicate bullying. But if you are concerned, talk to your child. Try to choose a time when neither of you need to do anything else, when you’re both well-rested, well-fed and in a good mood. Your child may find it easier if just one parent talks to them to start with, so they don’t feel outnumbered. What should I do? The key thing is to listen to your child, take their concerns

seriously and make sure they know the bullying is not their fault. Comments such as ‘You need to learn to stand up for yourself,’ will not help your child, but may mean they don’t trust you to help them in the future. Your child also shouldn’t be expected to change their appearance, hobbies or interests to placate a bully. It’s certainly tempting to go into the school ‘all guns blazing’. You will need to speak to the school, but try to do it calmly and in private. Speak to your child’s teacher or form tutor first, but if you’re not happy with the response make an appointment with the head of year or headmaster. You’ll want to be able to give details of the bullying, ideally including times, dates and names, if your child will provide them. All schools should have an anti-bullying policy, so ask to see it. You may want to ask for a written response, detailing how the school plans to address the bullying. Most schools should work with you to improve the situation, but if you don’t feel that your concerns are being taken seriously, you may need to take the matter further, to the Chair of Governors, or the police.

What if my child is being bullied through their phone? Home should be a safe haven, but with the advent of mobile phones and social media, bullying can go on around the clock. Cyber-bullying includes texts and phone calls, the sharing of photos, social media comments and more. It’s best not to respond to any messages, but do save them, or take screenshots as proof. Your child could block the number of the bully, and unfollow or unfriend them. You can also speak to the phone service provider’s malicious calls team, or the social network itself. If the bullying is being done by someone at your child’s school, make an appointment to speak to a teacher. The school should be able to offer support, even when the bullying is taking place off school grounds. Threats of violence may need reporting to the police. Where can I go for advice? There are several websites and helplines that can offer both you and your child support and advice. These include: www.bullying.co.uk 0808 800 2222 www.childline.org.uk 0800 1111 www.bullybusters.org.uk 0800 169 6928

Flower Power by Pippa Greenwood

Blooming Hollyhock Flower

Y

Gardening

ou can inexpensively and easily grow a huge range of flowers from seed at home. Just about every perennial flower is available to grow from seed, and once they have reached flowering size they’ll just keep on performing! There are lots to choose from, including lupins, silene, Echinacea, geranium, perennial poppies, delphiniums, gaillardia, hollyhocks, rudbeckia and salvia. Pay a visit to your local garden centre or use a seed catalogue and start planning; you could save a fortune, and all from a packet or two of seed. To start, you need containers to sow the seed into – I like to use half-sized seed trays, RootTrainers or smaller individual cells – and some good quality compost and your chosen seeds. It helps if you have something to tamp down the compost too, plus labels, a permanent marker, a dibber and some vermiculite (for covering seeds that need some light to germinate well). Sieve compost through a

compost sieve to remove the larger lumps, leaving fine compost perfect for seed sowing. If you sieve it straight into the pots, cells or trays, make sure you collect up any that falls on the surface below. Once the compost is in the tray or pot, firm it down so that there are no large gaps beneath the surface, and level it off to make it easier to sow the seeds evenly and at the same depth. You can make your own tamper using a piece of wood with a small block of wood nailed to it to make a ‘handle’. It is easier to look after seedlings if the seed has been sown in straight rows; make the rows using a plastic plant label. Check the packets for the correct depths for the seeds, and if you are sowing seeds in small cells then it is easier to make the holes using a dibber (or a pencil if you don’t have one). RootTrainers are ideal for larger seeds such as sunflowers. Don’t sow too densely or the seedlings will need more thinning out and will be more likely to become

drawn, leggy and weak. Once in place, just cover the seed with compost. If you are sowing larger seed into cells, just pop the seeds in to the prepared holes and cover to the required depth. Next, use a watering can with the rose attached and water thoroughly. If the seed sown was quite small, it is best to stand the tray in a shallow tray or bowl of water, so the compost absorbs water from below – this way the seeds are less likely to be displaced. Finally, label your seed trays clearly, ideally with a permanent marker. Many perennials need heat for the seed to germinate reliably. Put the trays, pots or cells into a propagator, standing each on moist capillary matting. Once the seedlings appear, gradually lower the temperature and then prick each one out into its own pot. Keep them fed and watered as they grow and in just a few weeks or months you will have some great plants ready for the garden.

Finance Ways To Reduce ‘Hidden’ Spending So You Can Save Money Or Pay Off Debt By Ann Haldon

T

here are the obvious ways to save money, such as using comparison websites or cancelling an unused gym membership, but what about the ‘hidden’ money pits that drain your cash in a less evident way? Three areas immediately spring to mind – food, cars and technology – all essential parts of life but ones that can seriously deplete your financial reserves. So what can you do to stem the flow of cash, start to pay off your debts, or save towards something special such as retirement or a family holiday? Food shopping According to Love Food Hate Waste, £13 billion of edible food was wasted by households across the UK in 2015, equating to 7.3 million tonnes.¹ One of the issues is that people don’t plan their food shopping, and overestimate how much their household needs. Although it’s a very convenient way to shop, supermarkets encourage overspending with so-called ‘deals’ and careful placement of goods around the store. This can result in food wastage as consumers are encouraged to buy more than they need – a particular danger if you also shop when you’re hungry. Cars An essential part of everyday life for most people, running

a car is expensive and constitutes a significant chunk of the annual budget. So although you may already be resigned to spending a small fortune on your car, have you looked closely at all the costs? insurance premiums The ever-increasing cost of insurance is a particular bugbear for motorists. On top of the annual increase in premiums, Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) has also risen from 5% to 6%, making insuring your car even more expensive. Although there’s nothing you can do about IPT, if you plan in advance and can afford to pay in one lump sum rather than by monthly direct debit, you’ll save money in the long-run. It’s also worthwhile looking at the level of cover your current policy provides, and whether it’s still appropriate. Fuel Fuel is usually the largest cost for motorists, and one of the best ways to save is to alter your driving habits. Avoiding harsh acceleration and braking, and reducing your speed on the motorway, if only by a few miles per hour, will help you save. You can check the price of local petrol online using PetrolPrices.com, and plan ahead so you’re not forced into buying expensive fuel at motorway service stations en route. Making sure your tyres are at the correct pressure,

and reducing unnecessary weight in the car, will also help. servicing and MoT Package deals on servicing are available on new and used cars, and although it may seem a large outlay at first, they can offer long-term savings. As far as MOTs are concerned, you can save the cost of a re-test just by carrying out a few simple checks before taking the car in, such as tyre tread depth and light bulbs. phones and TeChnology Most people don’t question the fact that they have a landline, but do you really need one? If you naturally reach for your mobile to make a call and could manage without a home phone, you’ll make a significant saving on line rental and call costs. If you prefer to keep the landline, maybe you could save on the cost of your mobile phone. With so many competitive pay-as-you-go deals around, it’s worthwhile checking them against your contract. Also, don’t forget about recycling any old phones to raise extra cash. ¹https://www. lovefoodhatewaste.com/ article/unite-food-waste-fight http://www.thisismoney. co.uk/money/bills/article1591904/50-ways-savemoney.html

‘You’re in for a BIG surprise’ at our Open Morning!

M

oyles Court School is unique in that it lies within the boundaries of the New Forest National Park. To give children a real experience of what life is like at Moyles Court, the Open Morning on 6th May offers the opportunity for children to join Amy, our professional ranger on a ‘Teddy Bear’s Picnic’. This will involve making camp, fire building and a number of outdoor activities. Moyles Court works with “Muddy Wellies” to deliver the Forest Schools Initiative, which

I

allows young children freedom in a safe outdoor environment with a professional leader. Forest School is a learning tool used to reconnect young people with nature and foster independence, leadership and teamwork from a very young age. It is designed as an ‘inspirational’ programme that offers all learners the opportunity to achieve, while developing confidence and self-esteem. To book onto the Open morning, telephone 01425 472 856 and bring your wellies and a teddy.

Best ever result for Verwood Concert Brass!

n March, Verwood Concert Brass Band competed in the West of England Brass Band Association regional finals in Torquay which is attended by 80 bands from across the region - and they came 3rd - a fantastic result for the band. When the result was announced, there was no mistaking the collective joy shown by the band and its supporters and it was as if they had come first! Verwood Concert Brass’ Bandmaster, Mike Dunnings explained “Over the years the band has steadily improved and in doing so has gained promotion through the brass band structure. Last year we were promoted from the 1st Section to the top Championship Section. We came 9th then, out of 13 bands in that section but with the bottom two bands being demoted, we knew another result like

that this year would see us slip back to the 1st Section”. So it is, that normally, the contest is of two halves. The top bands vie for the top six finishing spots with the other bands striving to have done enough to avoid demotion for another year. The significance of what Verwood Concert Brass achieved in coming 3rd and the reason for the heart felt celebrations then becomes apparent. Not only did the result make history for this being the band’s best ever result in its 153 year existence, it meant that it had been placed higher than four of the top six bands including the 5th ranked band in the world, Flowers, who came 4th and two other bands ranked 33rd and 37th in the world. It also means the band remains in the Championship Section for at least another year.

The Fear of Abandonment By Christina Smith

T

he loss of love and affection is an innate fear within us all. The fear of abandonment is universal. People who fear abandonment may have experienced physical separation from loved ones in childhood, through abuse, divorce, death or a long term hospital stay. However, emotional abandonment from parents, siblings, partners, peers will also lead to the trauma of the fear of abandonment. We all react to the fear of rejection. The fear of abandonment affects us at a deeper, unconscious level. It can cause significant impairment, particularly with regard to developing healthy relationships not only with others but also with ourselves.

Separation Therapy and CBT helps a person deal with their fear of abandonment by

It can be the underlying psychological cause of low self-esteem, self-loathing, self-harming, mood swings, anger (explosive and withdrawal type), crippling shame, addiction and can be the root cause of ‘People Pleasing’ or those who have an over-bearing sense of responsibility to make others happy. It can eat away at your self-esteem so that you constantly feel ‘less than’ your partner and you may overcompensate in many ways as you fear him/her leaving you. Alternatively, you may fear intimacy and distance yourself from people who want to get close to you, in effect you become the ‘abandoner’.

Portrait of a Local Artist Oil painter Jenny Sutton is a Dorset girl, regularly revisiting the county.

“My 96-year-old mother grew up in Wimborne and her father was HJ Evans, who was a wellknown character in the town in the ‘20s and ‘30s,” says Jenny, who attended Parkstone Grammar School. “He owned the newsagents and booksellers in East Street and when cars first appeared in Wimborne he used to take pride in personally directing the traffic.” Jenny’s other grandparents ran the Coventry Arms at Corfe Mullen until the mid 1950s, where her father Ralph was brought up. “I have happy memories of fishing in the River Stour at the bottom of the then beautiful garden behind the pub. One summer, when I was six, I came across a snake in the vegetable garden. It was an adder, and Grandad dispatched it quickly with a hatchet. It was then displayed outside the bar for all to see!” Jenny, whose mum still lives in Wimborne, remembers summer holiday hikes with school friends across the Purbecks. “I always had a paintbox in my rucksack and usually ended up at the Bankes Arms at Studland for a ritual ginger beer! I also had a friend whose family lived on a converted lifeboat in Poole Harbour, and we would sometimes go to one of the islands to give the boat its annual airing. There we would picnic and swim, and of course out came the sketchbook!” Jenny read Fine Art at Reading University, and then ran her own gallery in Hampshire. She now regularly exhibits her own oil paintings, most recently being selected for the Creative Coverage Exhibition at the New Forest Centre Gallery in Lyndhurst, which finishes on April 2. Jenny is a regular exhibitor in Hampshire Open Studios. She is an elected full member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. www.jennysutton-fineart.co.uk

Generous Verwood Panto audiences raise over £1300

G

enerous audiences of Verwood Pantomime Society’s recent production of Treasure Island donated £1301.00 to this year’s charity “A Vision for Vincent”. The cast watched the recording of the show at our DVD night on Tuesday and members Beth Larry (Jim) and Rebecca Jenkins (Penny) presented the cheque to Vincent’s parents Carl and Tanya Appleby. Sadly Vincent died in January 2016 after spending several months in Southampton and Poole cancer units. Carl and Tanya are raising funds to provide better facilities for teenagers at Poole hospital cancer unit.

Hillside Community First School News

S

chool uniform was swapped for pyjamas by the pupils and staff of Hillside Community First School in Verwood to help celebrate World Book Day. The children were encouraged to come into school in their PJs and bring in their favourite bedtime story book. During the day, these were shared with friends and classmates and new authors were discovered by all. As part of World Book Day, each child received a £1 book token, which they could spend at the school’s visiting Book Fair or at any participating retailer.

The Life List: Housey-Housey

A

ccording to the experts (and magazine columnists!), moving home can be one of life’s most stressful experiences. Think about it for a moment: picture yourself updating all those direct debits, the sheer effort required to box everything up, the quest to find a reliable removals company, and the memory test involved in redirecting your post. Are you stressed yet? But, of course, first you have to find your perfect property, which means learning the gentle art of estate agent interpretation. Here’s a handy reference guide that you may want to take along on your next house-hunting expedition. Bijou / compact / snug / cosy: different ways of saying ‘tiny’. Do not take a cat along to the viewing. Dual aspect: you’ll hear traffic and your neighbours from two directions, and you’ll need to keep two pairs of curtains closed. Recently refurbished throughout: the house was a tip until three months ago.

Has possibilities for the right buyer: it’s still a tip. Gravel drive: current owner lost the battle with weeds and took drastic action, possibly on the cheap. Private garden that’s not overlooked: your new garden is overgrown, probably with leylandii. Tiered garden: steep bordered - watch out for landslides. Natural water feature: prone to flooding. Located in the heart of the countryside: hope you enjoy smells and flies. In the centre of a close-knit community: all the locals will want to know your business. Private lane: do you know anyone who does reasonably priced tarmac? If not, you’ll need to find someone. Shared access: have a solicitor on stand-by.
