Dear Readers,
elcome to this year’s Christmas edition of Roundabout East Dorset Villages. Although the very mild weather we have whilst we go to print makes Christmas seem a very long way off - despite all the Christmas displays and goodies already in the shops! Not that I have ventured anywhere near any shops at Bournemouth or Castlepoint recently what with the dreadful Spur Road hold-ups and the reconstruction of the car park at Castlepoint reducing car parking substantially! Oddly enough my phone has just alerted me to Black Friday but I’m still not tempted! No doubt like most of you I find internet shopping one of the great benefits of the digital age! Of course my husband agrees with me wholeheartedly on this subject as it now avoids
with best wishes,
the annual Christmas shopping expedition which he absolutely detested since the male and female concept of shopping are just worlds apart! Proving the saying that - ‘Men are from Mars and Women are from Venus!’ Of course the Postal Service really comes into its own at this time of year and we have a potted history on page 20 which I found fascinating especially the fact that scam emails and particularly scam letters have been with us for around 150 years! As well as seasonal features we still have all the usual articles and if like me you MAY want to treat a loved one at this time of year AND help local businesses, look in here first in the ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 34! Finally my team and I would like to wish all our readers and advertisers the very warmest of festive greetings for this Christmas and the New Year.

Ferndown before the Bulldozers Less than 60 years ago Ferndown was just a village, with gravel roads, a scattering of shops and not even a set of traffic lights. Then the bulldozers arrived and much of Ferndown’s history disappeared forever. Part autobiography and part history, these articles are a fascinating glimpse of a village in transition.
Rosina Nurseries, Church Road
R
osina Nurseries were run by Harry Elsie Froud and Elsie Froud during the twentieth century and were started by Mr Froud’s father in 1892 and named after his wife. The large greenhouse from which exotic plants were raised fronted Church Road and children were always welcome in there. It was a fascinating world and Harry Mrs Froud would sometimes let the children Froud through to the back to watch the waterboatmen insects skimming across the surface of the concrete water-supply tank. The business announced itself very clearly across the gable end of the greenhouse as ‘Rosina Nursery’, but was generally known as ‘Froud’s’. It was later run by Harry and Elsie’s daughter Joyce. Unfortunately a large part of the garden was designated for compulsory purchase in 1982 and was buried under the Ferndown Centre car park. The greenhouse itself remained for another 30 years until 2012, but now it too has fallen to the developers. Today only its brick foundations can just be seen with its beautiful tiled floor, marking the end of one family’s century of horticultural endeavour. There are quite a few references on the web to two fair sized Edwardian properties which were also built on this site - one Google report from 2017 said that the owner of the site which used to be a florist with a Early 1990s plant nursery, sadly passed away in 2014 aged 93. There is also a 17 minute YouTube video uploaded by ‘Abandoned Explorer’ featuring a brief wander round one of the old houses which at the time retained many interesting original Edwardian features but it all looked very dilapidated. These houses still stand - just - since there is a recent newspaper report of one of the houses badly damaged by what appeared to be a deliberate fire in May this November 2018 year.

DS-7 - Tres Chic, Magnifique! 8
DS-7 Crossback ‘Performance’ Interior
styling, hampered by premium pricing. So this car had to be examined much more closely and critically. My car was resplendent in gorgeous deep red pearlescent metallic offset by a large black grille and bright detailing- truly a kerbside hero!. The power train was 225bhp petrol driven 8-speed automatic and with ‘Performance’ interior trim. This was in a suede-look charcoal grey with red piping and discrete bright finish - with mood lighting it looked a million dollars. So, a fantastic visual first impression. Find the ‘start’ button, fire her up to a very distant shush, characteristic throughout my test. Intriguingly, the whole dashboard area lit up to reveal all kinds of ‘goodies’ we now expect from sat-nav to lane departure warning - the crux of it being that the instrument panel was extensively customisable from minimalist to information overload. Regrettably, no heritage round dials to suit this critical old duffer though! In summary a lovely design, great quality and close attention to detail very impressive indeed. You find out about how any car suits mainly by driving it in a variety of circumstances. In the case of this DS-7, you’d be tickled pink if you tend to enjoy the driving experience. Take a deep breath and open your mind. Here
is a delight to start and move forward using the 8-speed auto or changing gear manually, trickle through urban traffic and notice it behaves like a highly trained police dog - relaxed yet alert and responsive. Show it the open road and it behaves like a greyhound, rewarding every input with precision and alacrity. Ask it to perform and it will overtake extremely rapidly and without fuss. Then look at the driving statistics and note how efficiently and economically it can cover ground at up to 40mpg, astounding! So this car has zillions of personality and delights if that’s what you want. A diesel - with much more economy and broad range of ‘punch’ - has the creamy 180bhp diesel and the same 8-speed auto box. This car has similar emissions to the petrol version, the diesel pollutes NO MORE. Personally, I would sacrifice a few electronic secondary safety aids to hold the price down - but go for the ‘Grip Control’ which gives this 4x2 a similar performance to a full 4x4. I’d also tick the option of the opening moon-roof. In brief, I want one!
Mike's Motors
N
ow although I am open to anything new, I’m not one to accept it unquestioningly. Groupe Peugeot announced a few years ago that it was inventing a whole new vehicle brand called ‘DS’. Initially it was composed of existing upmarket versions of previously Citroen branded vehicles. They had hi-jacked the model name of arguably the most iconic ever French Citroen model, the stillfashionably chic DS from the 1960s. So, I had a long list of sceptical questions especially as those pre-existing offerings - despite having many visual and equipment enhancements - remained recognisably Citroen. Then last year the brand new DS-7 was announced. Using the basic shape of the new Peugeot 3008, almost everything changed and yet another car-to-SUV crossover was born to join the many from virtually all other car makers already on the market. It was difficult to see a good business case for this vehicle, despite its luxury specifications and its unusual

ason Anthony is an independent artist and furniture designer specialising in pieces made from an eclectic mix of seasoned wood and resin. Having always had a creative mind and a keen interest in woodworking, in 2013 he turned his hobby and passion into a full-time business crafting unique pieces of furniture and art. Jason explains where he found the inspiration for his most recent work known as the Ocean Collection - a stunning collection of wooden coffee tables.

I am so fortunate to be located in this beautiful part of the country and have such an amazing array of natural beauty on my doorstep to inspire me. father would always wake us at 4am after a big storm to travel to the Jurassic coast around Charmouth so we could be the first on the beach at the crack of dawn to seek the new rocks that had been washed up in the storm and hopefully find the ones that contained fossils.” On a recent visit to Durdle Door, a beautiful spot along the Jurassic coast just outside Poole in Dorset, Jason was looking for inspiration when he happened upon some drift wood on the shore with the waves lapping against it. It reminded him of the rugged cliffs and the sea crashing against them and was struck by this image and wanted to reflect it in a piece of furniture. Jason adds “My latest Ocean Collection of coffee tables was inspired by my visit to Durdle Door. So off I went to various saw mills in search of some beautiful pieces of English Oak with just the right character that I felt reflected the Jurassic Coast. I then crafted several pieces using the natural beauty and character of the oak with all its faults to reflect the ruggedness of the cliffs.” Jason’s Ocean Collection can be seen on his website: www.jasonanthony.co.uk or call: 07957 136383 to discuss a Gardening, bespoke commission. s winter progresses the lakes continue to fill up with ducks, with numbers tending to peak in December. Even if you are a beginner to bird watching there is nothing quite like sitting in a bird hide and watching them peacefully feed on the lake, using any observations you make of their feeding habits to help with identification. The wigeon is a dabbling duck which feeds on aquatic plants and can also be seen out of the water grazing the grass on the banks. As you sit in the hides listen out for its distinctive whistle which carries well across the lake. The shoveler also dabbles but in a much more entertaining way! It uses its huge spatula like bill to sift the water but at the same time will often spin round and round in an attempt to create currents in the water which bring the food to them.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. www.hiwwt.org.uk
The black and white male tufted duck is a diving duck, so you will see it diving down in to the water to catch its dinner. The goosander also dives down and is a member of the sawbill family, named after the serrated edge to its bill which helps it to catch fish. Moving away from the water and into the woodland, bird watching continues to be enjoyable as the bare trees leave fewer places for the birds to hide. One bird that is more easily seen here than in other woods is the treecreeper. A small brown bird with a striking white tummy and curved pointy beak could be mistaken for a mouse as it moves up the trunks of trees with small hops in search of insects and spiders. The woodland hide is always busy as birds flock to the feeders for an easy meal. Winter visitors to look out for include siskin, redpoll and brambling.
Of course Blashford Lakes isn’t just brilliant for birds. As we move in to the new year the first flowers of the year will start to appear. Small patches of snowdrops can be seen along the river and the first fungi of the year will also be starting to show. The scarlet elf cup feeds on dead wood and thrives in our wet woodland habitats. As the name suggests it is a bright red cup shaped fungus creating a welcoming splash of colour amongst the leaf litter. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. For information on upcoming events visit our website: www. hiwwt.org.uk or phone: 01425 472760. For up-to-date wildlife information visit our blog: blashfordlakes.wordpress.com.

hosts Rotary Club lunch
arly in October the Bournemouth based charity ‘The Crumbs Project’ welcomed members from local Rotary Clubs across the regions to join them for a celebratory lunch. Rotary members enjoyed a tour of Crumbs’ professional training facility and a traditional roast dinner prepared by Crumbs’ team of mixed ability trainees. The lunch was an opportunity for Rotary Club members to gain a greater insight into the work Crumbs does with vulnerable adults to help them live independently. Visitors heard about Crumbs’ Work Steps programme, which supports trainees into either paid or voluntary work placements once their training has completed. Commenting on the event The Crumbs Project’s Operations Manager, Leanne Miller said; “We are delighted to welcome Rotary Club members who have been generous supporters of Crumbs for many years. Today has been a fantastic opportunity for some of our newest
trainees to showcase their cooking skills, and they have done a great job at delivering a delicious lunch for our guests.” Keith Randall, President of the East Cliff Rotary Club, said; “It has been a real privilege to visit Crumbs today for what has been a revelation into how they are helping to train disadvantaged individuals. The Crumbs Project is truly a fantastic charity, who have opened our eyes as to how they not only provide professional training, but also give trainees the confidence to integrate and make a valuable contribution to society. We are looking forward to working with The Crumbs Project in the future.” The Crumbs Project provides supported training services for adults with learning difficulties, mental health issues and stabilised addictions. For further information about The Crumbs Project please visit: www.crumbs.org.uk or call 01202 519320.

Parcels Peculiarities and the Postal Service Photo of Royal Mail Coach at The Science Museum. Credit Martinvl, Wikimedia Commons.
Special Feature
It was World Post Day on 9th October, but how was our own postal service created? NON-HUMBLE BEGINNINGS A royal dispatch system existed even in Edward IV’s reign, but it was Henry VIII who created the Master of the Posts role and Brian Tuke who truly founded the service. Tuke, who became a knight and Master of the Posts in 1516, used his experience of continental postal services and his influence to create a formal postal network. In each key town he nominated, three horses were used to transport mail. Their stable was called a post, hence our mail system’s nickname. But this service was truly Royal Mail, solely for the King and court. Common folk had to wait for Charles I to open up the King’s Posts to everyone in 1635. Cromwell’s more formal Office of Postage covered the whole Commonwealth, but once the monarchy was restored this was replaced by the General Post Office, a genuinely public service. By this time, senders rather than recipients were paying the postage, and by 1661 letters were also being date-stamped – to mitigate complaints about delays.
Royal Mail was privatised in 2011 and the UK government sold its remaining shares in 2015, ending 499 years of public ownership. PRIVACY AND PECULIARITY Long before the internet, retaining privacy in communication while ensuring security was problematic. Oliver Cromwell’s Principal Secretary of State, John Thurloe, regularly intercepted mail for intelligence purposes, but if he hadn’t, Sexby’s plot to assassinate Cromwell may never have been discovered. As for scam emails, they’re merely descendants of scam letters. In the 1870s, many US citizens received letters from someone claiming they had been given their name by a friend and offering $1,500 of ‘the best and safest’ counterfeit money for $75 of genuine cash (or a bargain $30,000 for $400). On the other hand, Oscar Wilde, whom you might have expected to value his privacy given the times he lived in, is rumoured to have thrown his stamped letters into the street, relying on the good nature of passers-by to pick them up
and post them. Far more peculiar were the antics of Willie Reginald Bray, who was inspired to test the limits of the postal service by its own 1898 guide. Among other things, it promised to send creatures through the post, including a live bee, ‘if confined in a suitable receptacle’. Bray took a dog to the post office, which was ‘posted’ via a walk with an obliging postman, and even posted himself once. It’s also believed that in December 1899, he became the first person to send a postcard to Santa Claus Esq. Finally, while Lewis Carroll is now viewed as something of a dubious character by many, some of the advice in his letter-writing guide is still relevant today. He advised always placing a cheque or document in the envelope before you finish writing the letter, lest you forget to put it in. Wise words indeed. Wimborne Air Cadets set to benefit from talk
A
talk given by prominent aviation speaker, Phil Holt, at the Allendale Centre in Wimborne resulted in a total of £350 being raised for the Wimborne Air Cadets 1069 Squadron (Flight Refuelling). The evening was sponsored by Christopher Batten, Estate Agents, Wimborne. Phil, who gave his services free of charge, talked knowledgeably about his time working in the world of aviation including airshows and alongside the Red Arrows and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). His many anecdotes resulted in an entertaining and informative evening for enthusiasts and the general public alike. Phil was also able to point out connections between the Wimborne Air Cadets, Flight Refuelling (now
Cobham) and aspects of preserved historic aircraft, including the BBMF Lancaster. Together with a large raffle the evening raised £350 for the Air Cadets Squadron and Sue Cook, Chair of the Squadron’s Civilian Committee, said after the event, “We were so fortunate to obtain Phil’s services and he gave an excellent presentation to a very appreciative audience. “I would like to thank everyone involved who helped to make the evening so successful and the money raised will be put to good use by the Squadron”, Sue added. Should I stay or should I go now?
I
f you are wondering whether you should stay in a relationship or not, often there is not a direct answer. You could look at the confusion this question is causing you. The confusion is probably based upon doubt and fear and not having the ability to make a choice to move your life forward. Certain types of thinking tie us in this confused state. One of these thoughts might be to do with fantasy or romantic idealisation. There are many fantasy thoughts we have about our relationships which distort the reality of the situation. We often turn to nostalgic thoughts, to avoid the more uncomfortable, often painful thoughts about leaving a relationship. We can distract ourselves with the warm loving feelings we had with our partner in the past. We can use a false loyalty to convince ourselves to stay in relationships that we know are not working. The chances are that if you are reading this article you have given yourself a second or third chance and bought yourself time to decide about the ending of the relationship. For many of us who have attachment issues we may ignore the call to action and may need to convince ourselves that we are not playing these fantasy games. Often when people get caught up in this indecision of ‘should I stay or should I go’ neither partner knows how to end the relationship. They get stuck in the potential or the hope of what the relationship could be like or they want it to be. They may even want their partner to be the one to end the relationship. However, we then have to manage our feelings of rejection and abandonment wounds which are potentially more emotionally damaging.

Gifted Inspiration by Kate Duggan FOR FRAGRANCE FANS If you’re looking to surprise someone with a new fragrance, Angel Muse could be a good choice. It might be Angel’s little sister, but it’s lighter, warmer and a bit more grown-up. The freshness of grapefruit and pink berries is combined with the warmth of hazelnut and the earthiness of patchouli and vetiver. The giftset is priced at £65, which gets you the full 50ml eau de parfum plus a handbag-friendly 9ml bottle.
