Celebrating the welldressed well by Kate McLelland

Quirky Britain

I

f you happen to visit the Midlands region between May and September, you might be in for a big surprise. During this time intriguing temporary structures can appear almost overnight, creating a riot of colour in the middle of an ordinary town or village street. These structures can be anything up to twelve foot tall and the complex artwork at the centre will be created from natural materials such as flowers, mosses, leaves, twigs, seeds, beans and small pine cones. If you’re new to the area you might imagine that these objects have been randomly placed as part of a local art festival, but look a little closer and you’ll realise that each display has been carefully positioned so it frames a well or freshwater spring. So what exactly is going on? Welcome to the world of welldressing (also known as ‘wellflowering’), a thriving tradition that predates the time when historical records began. According to the website welldressing.com over a hundred villages and towns in Britain still take part annually,

creating artworks to celebrate their local fresh water source. The history of welldressing It’s likely that the custom began as a pagan ritual, designed to pay tribute to the spirit that guarded the natural spring. The early Church, disapproving of such heathen traditions, reinterpreted the rites as a Christian thanksgiving ceremony. The practice remained popular until the reign of Henry VIII, when Chancellor Thomas Cromwell issued instructions for welldressing equipment to be destroyed: presumably because ‘idolatrous’ images – forbidden by Henry’s reformed church – were being used. That must have come as a blow to rural communities like Tissington in Derbyshire. Sir Richard Fitzherbert, the ninth baronet of Tissington Hall, claims that during natural disasters the wells provided a lifeline for the people. He explains: “In times of drought they never dried up, so everyone lived from the water, and in times of plague, the village cut itself off from the outside world and had a safe, reliable water source for survival.”

A race against time The process starts when the wooden boards on which the designs will be mounted are soaked in a local river or pond for several days. Clay is then smoothed onto the wet wooden frame, ready for the design to be added. Creating the artwork can take up to a week, so after the design has been etched into the wet clay, everyone needs to work quickly to make sure the display goes up in time. There is huge competition between villages to create the best display and that competitive spirit has now been channelled into an official event. Last year the RHS Chatsworth Flower Show started a competition to recognise the artistic flair of the nation’s well-dressers and for two years running these displays have enjoyed pride of place in RHS Chatsworth’s community area. So, if you happen to visit the Midlands over the summer, look out for these spectacular boards. Nowadays the concept of ‘well-dressing’ may seem a little archaic, but these remarkable displays stand as a tribute to the skill, patience and local pride of the volunteers who work so hard to create them.

Dear Readers,

his issue’s cover features the ‘Dorset Dragon’ or Durdle Door as it is more commonly known! One of the most iconic features of the Jurassic Coast and one of my favourite locations for a scenic cliff walk as no doubt it is for many of our readers! I had never heard of this nickname until recently but it’s very easy to see why if you look carefully - like a dragon petrified by some ancient Dorset spell and no doubt the story lost in the mists of time! Not to be outdone by Dorset folklore we also have The Bisterne Dragon in the New Forest of course! If like me you are also a big fan of English folklore and traditions then page 2 tells us about the surprisingly long established and ancient British

with best wishes,

tradition of well-dressing or well-flowering! I have never heard of it I must admit and had to google it to find out more after reading the article! Seems it’s big in the Midlands though. There are many more local events happening all around your local area like the popular Bisterne Scarecrow Festival for instance during August and September, so check out our What’s On pages 22 & 24 and our website for more details. Hopefully the sunshine lasts just a bit longer during the school holidays! If you would like more members in your club or society, and/or would like us to publish your news, articles or future events, then simply e-mail the details to: info@roundaboutmags.co.uk.

Ferndown before the Bulldozers Less than 60 years ago Ferndown was just a village, with gravel roads, a scattering of shops and not even a set of traffic lights. Then the bulldozers arrived and much of Ferndown’s history disappeared forever. Part autobiography and part history, these articles are a fascinating glimpse of a village in transition.

A

Victoria Road shops

part from Ringwood Road, the busiest shopping area in Ferndown in the Forties and Fifties was Victoria Road, where Cobbs Garage, later known as Victoria Garage occupied the corner site. It was started by Charles Cobb and Albert Haskett. Mr Cobb was a member of the Red Cross and the Red Cross ambulance was kept at the garage, which was badly damaged by incendiary bombs during WW2. Next to the garage was a small parade of shops (hidden by the tree in 1951 photo right) which are still there today. It included Maison Coward hairdresser’s and the estate agency run by William Stickland, a magician and one time president of the Magic Circle. Last in the block was Arthur Wareham’s fish-and-chip shop. Arthur and his wife Joyce married at Wimborne Minster in 1919. Joyce was featured in our October 2017 article and was Ferndown’s first woman firefighter. July 2018

1915

Cobbs Garage 1951 Arthur lost both legs in what must have been a tragic accident at Creekmoor pottery in 1927 and had been fitted with two artificial limbs. In 1931 they bought a fish shop at Ringwood and they also had a small one in Ferndown at the junction oif Wimborne Road and Queens Avenue. The Warehams moved to their shop in Victoria Road in 1936 and were there for more than 20 years. Arthur was always joking with ‘customers and trading insults across the counter! Since then it has been Ashley’s wet fish business, then the Capital pizza and kebab takeaway and currently it is suprisingly a fish and chip shop yet again! The book is available from Brian Davis, 31 Whinhams Way, Billericay CM12 0HD, price £13.99 + £2 p&p.

itroen’s first C4 Cactus was a brave attempt to make an ‘affordable’ medium hatch to compete with Renault’s bargainbasement Dacia brand - itself quite successful in capturing the bottom end of the market. While the first Cactus was very original in looks and style, failed attempts to make the car price-competitive were typified by short cuts in the design. Maybe Citroen lost sight of the fact that they are a traditional car manufacturer operating in a high quality - and high cost - manufacturing environment. The result was a car which was interesting but not significantly cheaper than mainstream Citroen offerings. In 2018 the series 2 which while having an exterior design retaining the Cactus signature, has become more up-market and smarter without any significant price increase, now starting at £19k. It has adopted the new Citroen ‘chunky’ nose and ditched the previously standard roof rails while the airbumps so prominent in the series 1 have been toned down

neatly. Driver and passenger comfort is prime through each trim level with super-comfortable seats and a new hydraulic cushion suspension to give this car a ‘big-car’ feel. Many safety aids are included even in basic trim. It has become even more eco-friendly on all levels, yet is a much more satisfying driver’s car. And so to my test car. The base model called ‘Feel’ was supplied in a fetching metallic blue with two-tone grey cloth interior, powered by a 100bhp diesel with 5-speed gearbox. This power unit is absurdly economical - over 60mpg whatever you throw at it and capable of much more - and is well below permitted NOx and CO2 levels. But then Groupe Peugeot has always been at the forefront of clean air technology so this excellent performance was to be expected. Other tackle thrown in included all the normal safety gear plus auto safety braking, sat-nav, DAB radio, the obligatory bluetooth, tyre pressure sensing and a rear parking camera with aural warnings. On the road? A very quiet and pleasant ride at any speed, the cushioning seats and suspension going unnoticed until be-

coming aware of the irregular pitter-patter of the tyres as they explored all the potholes our wonderful local councils could dig up. On several occasions it was reminiscent of the 1960’s Hydrolastic Austin 1300 and 1800, so smooth was the ride. This suspension out-performs many much larger cars - alone a ‘tour-de-force’, thank you Citroen! The handling and roadholding were also excellent with full marks to the electric steering for being ultra-light at parking speeds, but diminishing to lots of ‘feel’ as the speed elevated. Despite the eco credentials, the engine was lusty without burning tarmac, yet personally I felt it could use a sixth speed to aid eco-cruising still further, a fitment on more expensive variants. As regards space, this really is a trump card. Lots of room in the front, with those seats far back there was still a Ryanair level of seating in the back - up to 2 hours endurance if somebody is available to unfold you afterwards. The ‘piece de resistance’ was a surprisingly huge boot capable of taking 2 suitcases up to 28” tall with room on top and around for smaller bags, the odd violin, laptop cases, emergency kits and all that jazz. So a very likeable car, ecofriendly and capable of travelling across Europe with peeps and baggage - yes, we did it!

Wimborne in Bloom 2018 News

Open Gardens 2018 raises almost £3500 for Wimborne in Bloom

O

ver 550 people enjoyed this year’s Open Gardens Day held in aid of Wimborne in Bloom on Sunday 24th June. A glorious Midsummers Day which truly lived up to its name! Richard Nunn, Chairman of Wimborne in Bloom speaking after the event said “How excellent that so many members of the public, from far and wide, chose Wimborne’s Open Gardens to visit on such a beautiful day despite clashing with a major football event! All garden owners enjoyed welcoming their visitors, answering

questions and gladly accepting the well justified praise for their efforts – not to mention the excellent amount of money raised towards Wimborne in Bloom providing the Town’s floral displays. Thank you to all involved.” There were a total of 18 gardens open around the Town and to boost funds, teas were sold at a number of venues and there were also some plant stalls. Almost £3,500 was raised towards this years ‘In Bloom’ Campaign. We were also grateful for the support of Symonds and Sampson and Holmans for their help towards printing and other costs.

Wimborne In Bloom - Local Art & Poetry Competitions 2018

T

he Wimborne in Bloom Art and Poetry Competitions have again received many excellent entries from all age groups and were of an exceptionally high standard giving the judges a challenging task in choosing the winners. The theme this year was ‘Wimborne Transport Through the Ages’. Wimborne in Bloom has been delighted with the continued and positive response from local schools and entries were received from Wimborne First, St John’s, Pamphill, Allenbourn and Queen Elizabeth’s. The Children’s Art Competition attracted over 400 entries. This year a local artist judged the children’s work from Allenbourn and Queen Elizabeth’s and the Town Mayor Councillor Mrs Kelly Webb judged the Primary Schools children’s art.

S

The Children’s Poetry Competition attracted over 50 entries and the Adult Poetry Competition was also well supported. Prizes will be presented at the Wimborne in Bloom Annual Prize-giving which will be held at Allenbourn Middle School, East Borough on Saturday 22nd September starting at 2.30pm. This event will also include the prize presentations for the Wimborne in Bloom Annual Gardens Competition. The Wimborne in Bloom Committee wishes to thank all entrants for the high standard of their work and for supporting these competitions, which, together with the support of sponsors, has made the competitions so successful over the years. Staying Safe In The Sun by Kate Duggan

Don’t know your UVA from your UVB? Worried about a mole? Want to be prepared in case you get sunburnt? This guide is for you…

F

irst up – the difference between UVA and UVB. Both are types of ultraviolet radiation that can increase your risk of getting skin cancer. UVA rays prematurely age skin, leading to more wrinkles and pigmentation. UVB rays are the ones that actually burn.

Beauty

‘SPF’ is short for sun protection factor. The higher the number, the better the protection. The British Association of Dermatologists recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or over. However, the SPF only relates to UVB rays, not UVA rays. So you’ll need to look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that protects against both types of ultraviolet radiation. You then need to apply it at least 15 minutes before going outside, and reapply it at least every two hours. Weleda’s Edelweiss Sunscreen Facial Lotion protects against both UVA and UVB, has an SPF of 30 and is packed with skin-friendly ingredients, such as organic coconut and jojoba oils. It’s suitable for all skin types and smells rather lovely, with subtle notes of citrus and lavender. Priced at £13.95, the lotion can be bought online from www.weleda.co.uk.

If you do forget to slap on the sunscreen, aloe vera can help to soothe sunburnt skin. Not all aloe vera gels are created equally, however. Some contain very little actual aloe vera, so do check the ingredients list. Dr. Organic Aloe Vera Gel is a good choice. It has

suggests, it’s fragrance-free and gentle enough for even sensitive skin. Ingredients include aloe vera, green tea, chamomile, sweet almond oil and evening primrose oil. The serum costs £29.50 from Boots or www.trilogyproducts. co.uk.

If you’re worried about a mole or other changes to your skin, it’s always best to book in to see your GP. In the meantime, The British Association of Dermatologists’ ABCD-Easy guide details the main things to look for: • Asymmetry: the two halves of the area may differ in shape. • Border: the edges of the area may be irregular or blurred, and sometimes show notches. • Colour: this may be uneven. e find ourselves in the last throws of summer with autumn just around the corner and life is busy on the reserve. The fruits of summer are evident particularly on the brambles as the blackberries ripen; there is plenty of food for all the birds, reptiles, mammals and insects. On sunny days search for colourful butterflies as they wing from flower to flower; see comma, painted lady, peacock, red admiral and brimstone to name just a few. Now is a great time to be wowed by the dazzling display of dragon and damsel flies as they whizz past, patrolling their feeding grounds. Why not join Reserves Officer Bob Chapman on a summer wildlife walk on Wednesday 1st August from 1.30pm until 3.30pm in search of some of these delightful insects. Please telephone 01425 472760 to book your place. For some of the birds August is a time to moult, freshening up and growing new feathers after the wear and tear

of the breeding season. For others it will be time to move on. As we get into September, the swallows and martins will be heading off to their African wintering grounds. Before they leave they prepare for their long journey by gathering in their hundreds to feed up over Ibsley Water. They create an amazing and memorable spectacle as they demonstrate their remarkable, acrobatic flying skills. It is not just birds leaving though, duck numbers including mallard, teal, wigeon, gadwall, tufted duck and shoveler are all beginning to build up. Now is also a great time to get a view of, or if you’re lucky an impressive photograph of a kingfisher. The fledglings will be dispersing across the reserve now and certainly last year there were regular sightings and photo opportunities, particularly from Goosander Hide. Often all you get is a flash of shining blue as they dart along the water’s edge, but ours seemed happy to sit and pose for a while.

The light trap will be attracting a wonderful variety of moths, for example pink barred sallow, feathered gothic and if we’re lucky Clifden nonpareil or the blue underwing, especially if the nights are cloudy and warm. For your own glimpse of these and other creatures of the night, including bats, join the Education Officer for a family night walk on Friday 14th September from 7pm until 8.30pm and head out onto the reserve after dusk. Please telephone to book your place. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. Lions 5k obstacle run

round 100 runners, some young and some not so young, took part in the third annual Wimborne and Ferndown Lions’ Muddy Fun Run which took place over a 5K obstacle course held at Homelands Farm, Three Legged Cross in lovely weather on the 26th of May. The varied set of 25 obstacles generally survived the onslaught. Organiser Lion Peter Burnett said “We are learning how to improve the course all the time. Because of the dry weather the early part of the course was not so muddy this time, that is until they reached the slippery slide and the tyre tunnel!” The event raised over £600 for the designated Lions’ charities

Inspire Your Wanderlust Thinking about booking a last-minute holiday? These books should help to inspire your wanderlust. (Or just transport you to distant climes while you’re lounging in your garden.) old Cherokee girl in tow. First published 30 years ago, The Bean Trees beautifully evokes the landscape and spirit of 1980s Southwestern America.

Book Reviews

The Road to Little Dribbling – Bill Bryson In The Road to Little Dribbling, Bill Bryson sets out to explore Britain once again – 20 years after his bestselling Notes from a Small Island. Not only is it highly entertaining, but The Road to Little Dribbling is packed full of facts and wry observations. You’ll veer from rolling your eyes at Bryson’s ‘grumpy-old-man-ishness’ to vigorously nodding your head, to snorting with laughter, to booking a train ticket to explore a corner of this island you haven’t yet stumbled upon. The Bean Trees – Barbara Kingsolver Determined to avoid ending up like her Kentucky classmates – pregnant and married before she’s 18, Taylor buys a beaten up old car and a tank of petrol, and heads west. By the time her car breaks down in Arizona, she has a three-year-

Adventures of a Young Naturalist – Sir David Attenborough In 1954, David Attenborough began his exploration of the world, seeking out rare animals for London Zoo and sharing his experiences with a captive TV audience back at home. Adventures of a Young Naturalist charts his adventures across Guyana, Indonesia and Paraguay, from coming face-to-face with Komodo dragons and giant armadillos to befriending a young male orangutan. Numerous photographs help to bring the tales to life. The Earth From The Air – Yann Arthus-Bertrand It’s been almost 20 years since Yann Arthus-Bertrand first set out to capture aerial photography of some of the most remote places on Earth. The result – The Earth From the Air – went on to sell more than 3 million copies. A new edition was released last year, which includes 100 stunning new photographs and commentary from the likes of Jane Goodall and Matthieu Ricard. Breathtaking.

The Art of Travel – Alain de Botton Alain de Botton explores the reasons why we travel and discusses how we can make the most of our experiences. He covers everything from holiday romances to hotel mini-bars. It’s a book about taking pleasure in our surroundings (however mundane) and taking the time to look, really look, at the world around us.

Wanderlust: A Book Club Sampler from Simon & Schuster This travel-inspired sampler is only available as a free Kindle ebook. It includes excerpts from several novels, including An Atlas of Impossible Longing by Anuradha Roy, The Distant Hours by Kate Morton and The Hundred Foot Journey by Richard Morais. Also included are the authors’ favourite travel-related memories and notes and tips for book clubs. Perfect for dipping into on a summer’s evening, Wanderlust may help you to find your next book and your next holiday destination.

What your rabbit needs to be happy and healthy

Pets

R

abbits have specific needs if they’re to live happy and healthy lives. From clean living conditions to a nutritional diet, here are some of their basic, non-negotiable requirements for health and happiness. Living quarters A spacious, safe and secure hutch with an attached and enclosed outdoor run allows your rabbit to get

PETS

the exercise they need, as they love to run around and chew or play with toys. They require a safe, quiet and enclosed place to rest – this could be a separate ‘room’ within the hutch, or an area away from the main living quarters divided by hay or straw. Protection from extreme weather, and predators such as foxes or other pets in the area, is also important. Nutrition Rabbits need lots of fresh vegetables, particularly leafy greens, rabbit pellets, a little fruit, and plenty of hay to grind down their teeth. They also like to eat grass, but not the clippings from your lawnmower – grass

should be growing within their reach, or freshly picked in clumps from the garden. A fresh supply of clean drinking water is essential, and in summer you’ll need to change it regularly so they don’t pick up any bacteria. Health checks Their nails and teeth need to be checked regularly to make sure they’re not too long, and also their tails and bottom area, particularly in the summer when fly strike is a huge danger. Having a vet check them at least annually is also essential for long-term health. www.rspca.org.uk/ adviceandwelfare/pets/rabbits/-/ articleName/CAD_Rabbits By Ann Haldon

Choosing To Be Yourself

By Christina Smith

Do you ever feel guilty that you have done something that will upset your parents or your family?

Remember, if you keep on doing what you always do, you will keep on getting what you get!

Do you feel smothered by your parents even as an adult?

If you wish to explore self-differentiation, counselling may help you to find a way to break free from the family rules and make the choice to be yourself. www.allaboutme.email.

Do you live a double life with your family or perhaps you feel like a kid again when you go home? For a lot of us this is a common experience and these feelings happen frequently. Your family may expect certain things from you, or for you to behave in a certain way with them. In fact, most families require these rules. These family rules may be explicitly or implicitly implied, but either way they still have influence on you. The real growth or real maturing progress requires finding our own sense of self or self-differentiation. In other words, we become ourselves as we grow up with our own sense of boundaries, without the need to over please our family or behave in an overly responsible way. All families have a benefit for us doing what we do, and they would prefer that it stays that way. Healthy families allow more freedom and more sense of self for individuals. For more dysfunctional families it becomes more important to maintain that sense of enmeshment and confusion. This emotional intimidation usually occurs from one generation to another. Even over worrying about you may be an enmeshment state which makes you feel pressured to conform. The threat of emotional distance can be very painful for those who want to mature and find themselves. Family threats of emotional, physical, spiritual or financial abandonment are only a few ways this intimidation occurs.

Inner Child therapy is available at: www.allaboutme.email

Trudie’s Big Day Out

A

s part of the NHS 70th anniversary celebrations, Trudie Spicer, a branch member of the East Dorset and Ringwood NHS Retirement Fellowship (NHSRF), won the Wessex Area NHSRF ballot to attend The Buckingham Palace Garden Party. Upon arrival in London Trudie was taken to a surprise venue for lunch beforehand. Unbeknown to her, however, Trudie’s son in law, who worked for the owners of the Hotel, had arranged a wonderful reception at the Ritz and she was treated just like a VIP. A chauffeur driven car took her to Buckingham Palace after a lovely lunch. Alas, the Queen was not present but Trudie saw Prince Charles and Prince Edward. A fine finish to a wonderful day that Trudie will remember forever

Men, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention By Alison Runham

Health

S

eptember 10th is World Suicide Prevention Day. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds and on the rise worldwide, with nearly 800,000 suicides a year (that’s one every 40 seconds) and around 20 times as many failed attempts. Suicide Risk Factors Men aged 20-29 and 40-49 are most at risk. A clue to why lies in the Movember Foundation’s conclusion that mental health stigmas and men’s reluctance to discuss and seek help for mental health issues are two major reasons why their life expectancy remains lower than women’s. The biggest risk factor for suicide is a previous suicide attempt. Although suicide is often clearly linked to mental disorders and alcohol abuse, many suicides happen impulsively in moments of crisis: a trauma, relationship break-up, financial problems or chronic pain and illness that suddenly overwhelms us. Conflict, disaster, violence, abuse, loss and a sense of isolation are also risk factors and rates are high amongst marginalised groups, e.g. refugees, migrants, prisoners and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people. So how can we help to

prevent suicide, both as individuals and a society? Suicide Prevention • Tackle discrimination, damaging stereotypes and stigmas. Children raised in an environment where people are ridiculed for expressing their sexual orientation or feelings will be scared to express theirs, putting them at higher risk of isolation, depression and suicide. It can be tough to tackle discrimination among family, friends and colleagues, but it’s essential. We must also break down stigmas by treating mental illness as we do physical illness.  Encourage others (especially men) to express their feelings and seek help with mental health issues, and increase awareness of the dangers of alcohol and its misuse. Suicide is preventable, says The British Psychological Society. “Early identification and effective action can get people the care they need.” Depression and alcoholrelated disorders must be identified and treated swiftly. • Pay closer attention to those around us. Many suicide victims reportedly seemed ‘fine’ just days or even hours before ending their lives. We must look out for warning signs

and, on a practical level, remove (as far as possible) the means for attempting suicide from those we fear are at risk. If you are struggling with a crisis or a mental health issue, do get help. It may feel like your pain will never end, but things can get better. In his book Reasons to Stay Alive, depression sufferer and bestselling author Matt Haig reminds us that depression may seem vast, but it’s always smaller than us. “It operates within you; you do not operate within it. It may be a dark cloud passing across the sky, but… you are the sky. “You were there before it. And the cloud can’t exist without the sky, but the sky can exist without the cloud.” Useful Info Samaritans: www.samaritans. org call 116 123, open 24/7 every day Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) – for men www.thecalmzone.net 0800 58 58 58 open 5pm midnight every day Matt Haig, Reasons to Stay Alive, Canongate Books. S

Be Chimney Fire AWARE

tatistics show that there are approximately 7000 chimney fires reported each year and the majority of these are preventable. Chimney fires are caused when soot and tar deposits build up and reach a sufficient level that they are vulnerable to ignite. The heat from the fire warms the tar and soot deposits, these then release combustible particles which then ignite once the desired temperature is achieved and the fire then rapidly migrates up the chimney and into the roof space. SIGNS & SYMPTOMS of a Chimney Fire:  A loud roaring noise.  Larger quantities of smoke leaving the chimney.  Sparks and flames leaving the chimney.  Smoke in adjoining rooms / loft space.

IF your fire doesn’t light, roar, burn or draw air as well as it used to, then this indicates that it needs professionally sweeping. A clean chimney helps prevent the risk of fires and any structural damage to your property. Having your chimney regularly swept will prevent the build up of soot and tar and clear other obstructions such as birds, bees or wasps nests, together with fallen leaves and other debris. In the opinion of a current full time serving Fireman, “Chimneys often fall into that “out of sight, out of mind” category. But they are a hidden danger if they are not professionally maintained. Remember - these fires and gases are deadly and it is imperative that we ensure your lives are safe.” Complete Sweep recommend routine maintenance at least once a year by a professional certified chimney sweep.
