Rotunda and Me

I have been fortunate to work in the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center since 2007 and have seen so many wonderful programs develop and expand for our SMU students. Our tutors cover so many topics, over 80 of them are prepared to assist their peers in any way possible to better understand concepts. Our academic counselors and learning specialists work closely with students in class settings (HDEV), workshops, and one-on-one settings to assist students in developing skills needed to succeed in the classroom and also learn to self-advocate for themselves.

The Writing Center has expanded its outreach to increase support for more science-related courses and includes a soon-to-be-offered honors course about writing in STEM courses. Our DASS team developed a way to assist students in seeking assessments to determine learning differences financially. They continue to assist students with one-on-one attention on how best to utilize accommodations to succeed in classes.

I have had the privilege of working with Rotunda since its new revision, in 2019. In spring of 2023, I was lucky enough to work even closer when I filled in for Nikole. I may have helped with RISE and working one-on-one assisting students to prepare plans to discuss with their academic advisors but what Rotunda did for ME was amazing! I saw an amazing group of students form a community where everyone was not only welcomed but celebrated. I saw peer counselors demonstrate unending compassion and support for new students.I saw new students thrive beginning at RISE and continue to make an impact on our campus.

They became leaders in Greek organizations, student organizations, Student Senate presidents, senators, research assistants for faculty, tutors, and RAs, to name a few.

They helped form the First Gen Association who works in tandem with the First Gen Academic Initiative to offer opportunities and support to our first-generation college students. I saw incredible challenges faced and overcome by students who were committed to their studies. I saw drive balanced with compassion. I saw excitement when the opportunity to study abroad or in Taos became a reality.

I saw young people whom I admire and respect so much succeed and help each other. Working with Rotunda has been one of the highest honors and thrills of my professional career.

Thank you and E3!
