As Rotunda’s resident relic, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing the growth and transformation of our program over the past six years. Our program has garnered the attention of the broader campus community and served as a home to hundreds of brilliant scholars, each full of untapped potential. As our program evolves, so do the people who pass through it. Amid December commencement and looking ahead to May commencement, I’ve reflected on my first year as a peer counselor and the unforgettable cohort who will soon walk across the stage.
After a challenging first year and an “unprecedented” second year, I was eager to make a difference and support my fellow Rotunda scholars What I didn’t fully realize, however, was just how much they would impact me. This cohort of scholars taught me invaluable lessons about myself, mentorship, and legacy. The Class of 2025 entered the program full of energy and enthusiasm, ready to make their mark on the world after emerging from the pandemic. During our meetings, I often felt awe of their drive and readiness to take on challenges. They seemed to have it all figured out far more than I had at their stage and it made me question how much I honestly had to offer them.
But despite feeling a bit out of my depth, I showed up for them in whatever way I could. Maybe I didn’t know the first thing about dance, but I was there at recitals. Perhaps I couldn’t code to save my life, but I knew plenty of people who could and by extension, so did my scholars. Maybe I didn’t have all the answers, but I learned how to listen, nurture, and offer guidance where I could. My first year as a peer counselor (and every year since) was not without its challenges, but it was also a period of incredible growth that, in some parts, was fueled by my first cohort
Pride is an understatement regarding how I feel about the Class of 2025 Whether they knew it or not, I continued to cheer for them from the sidelines after their first year. I’ve watched them explore every campus and off-campus opportunity, empower themselves and their communities, and evolve as leaders, mentors, and people. Speaking of E³, I’ve had the honor of working with many scholars from that first cohort over the years, and it has been uniquely rewarding to see them expand our program and create a lasting legacy within the walls of ACE. Thank you for pouring your heart and soul into our program—Rotunda is undeniably better for it. I am humbled to have played a small role in this cohort’s journey.
Graduation marks the close of a significant chapter, but the next one is just around the corner. As you stand on the threshold of your next chapter, I hope you remember that your journey does not end with graduation. The lessons you ' ve learned here, the connections you ' ve made, and the legacy you ' ve built will continue to shape who you are and how you impact the world I do not doubt that you will leave your mark in ways that inspire others, just as you have inspired me. When you undoubtedly change the world, I’ll cheer you on and wait to hear all about it.
Whether it is this December or as you look towards May - congratulations, Fall 2021 cohort - I am so proud of you.

The Rotunda Scholars Program kicked off the academic year with our usual series of engaging and meaningful community dinners, each designed to foster connection, encourage reflection, and inspire growth among our first-year scholars. Planned and executed by Coordinators Aileen Sanchez and Aneiry Resendiz, these dinners focus on different aspects of the SMU experience and the Rotunda Program to help navigate their SMU journey. Hear how the Fall Dinners went below!
To set the tone for the year, our first community dinner focused on creating a warm and welcoming environment that introduced first-year scholars to the supportive Rotunda family.
The evening featured a lively Family Feud-style game night filled with pizza, laughter, and friendly competition. Scholars connected with peers, coordinators, and staff in an atmosphere that celebrated camaraderie and fun, setting the stage for a bright and fulfilling year ahead.
As the semester reached its midpoint, the October community dinner encouraged scholars to pause and reflect on their journeys so far. The event provided a safe space for students to share their experiences—the challenges they’ve overcome and their aspirations for the rest of the year. Coordinators and peer counselors emphasized each scholar’s progress, celebrating accomplishments while acknowledging struggles. This evening of reflection aimed to inspire scholars to keep striving for their goals, reminding them of the strength and resilience they’ve developed along the way.
In November, the focus shifted toward professional growth and leadership. The dinner featured an intimate, family-style gathering where first-year scholars had the opportunity to engage with accomplished Rotunda alumn.. These alumni shared valuable insights and personal stories, offering guidance on professional development and leadership opportunities. The evening inspired scholars to envision their future potential within the program and beyond, leaving them motivated to pursue their goals with confidence.
Each community dinner this semester has been a testament to building a supportive and transformative scholar experience. See you in 2025 with our next set of dinners!
Thank you to everyone who joined us for the inaugural session of the Rotunda Scholars Evolve Lecture Series, featuring our Distinguished First-Gen Alumni Lecture. My name is Gracie Holder, and I have had the privilege of being part of the Rotunda Scholars Program since August 2021.
I remember stepping onto SMU’s campus my freshman year, completely and utterly terrified. Growing up in a rural Oklahoma town of just over 2,000 residents, I was nervous about how I would adjust to life in metropolitan Dallas, let alone at a prestigious and bustling university like SMU.
My dad, a farmer, and my mom, a schoolteacher, instilled in me the values of hard work and determination, regardless of where you come from. But neither my parents nor I knew a single soul who had attended SMU. On the day of the Rotunda Family Reception, after moving into my dorm in the pouring rain, we headed to the HT Ballroom.
I remember thinking: “This rain is a sign I shouldn’t be here. This is terrible.”
Walking into the ballroom soaking wet, I slipped into the bathroom to try to dry my dress and shed a few tears, overwhelmed by the heightened emotions of being a new freshman. When I stepped out, I spotted Nikole Juarez. She likely didn’t know my name, but she smiled at me, and in that moment, I felt okay.
Who could have predicted that one small exchange would lead to hundreds more over my 3.5 years on campus? I’ve not only been a Rotunda Scholar but have also had the joy of serving as a Peer Counselor during my sophomore year, a Program Coordinator my junior year, and now, a Peer Upperclassman Liaison in my final semester.
Nikole is just one of many incredible people I’ve had the honor to work, cry, and celebrate with, but she is the cornerstone of why I am part of this program.
Through Rotunda, I’ve experienced college in ways I could never have imagined.
Thanks to the Rotunda Fund, I spent the summer of 2023 studying abroad in Italy with my fellow Rotunda Scholar, coworker, friend, and now bridesmaid, Kennedy Phillips. I also attended SMU in Taos in January 2024, taking a Spanish food and culture class for my minor while marveling at the snowy landscapes and wildlife of a different SMU campus.
While these highlights are unforgettable, my favorite memories are quieter: staff meetings, program debriefs, and simply sitting with co-workers and friends, sharing ideas, food, and laughs.
As I reflect on my time with the Rotunda Scholars Program, I want to take a moment to pay tribute to the incredible people who have shaped my journey. In no particular order, these messages are my way of expressing gratitude, admiration, and love for the teammates, mentors, and friends who have made an unforgettable impact on my college experience.
Jacob Garza, my fellow co-coordinator during 2023-2024, you ’ ve become one of my best friends and allies. Thank you for always being my go-to person, whether it’s to laugh, cry, or vent. I can’t imagine this journey without you, and I’m so grateful for everything you ’ ve brought to my life.
Aileen Sanchez, starting the first Rotunda Book Club with you in 2022 was one of the best decisions I made. You are not just an incredible collaborator but also a true friend who brings warmth and energy to everything we do
To my PUL Team (Mimi Morales, Kennedy Phillips, Habibulla Ogly, Madison McNeely, Reece Smith), being your Lead PUL has been one of the biggest joys of my senior year. Watching each of you grow not just in this role but as individuals has been such an inspiring experience. I am so proud of how far you ’ ve come, and the way you ’ ve embraced this responsibility with heart and determination has left me in awe. Thank you for making this journey so special.
Dr. Bierman, Your kind spirit and unwavering willingness to help have been such a blessing in my life. You’ve always made time to listen, guide, and encourage me, and it’s something I’ll never forget. And now, as I graduate, maybe just maybe I can finally call you Sue! Thank you for everything
Dr. Doyle, thank you for always believing in me. Your encouragement and unwavering support have meant the world, and you ’ ve gone above and beyond to help me pursue my dreams in every way possible. You’ve been a steady source of inspiration and guidance, and I’m so grateful to have had you in my corner
Ke, you never fail to make me laugh. You’ve taught me how to lead with authenticity and to stand firm in my values. Thank you for always reminding me to stay true to myself and for leading by example. I will miss you!
Bri, your listening ear, awareness, and sensitivity have taught me so much about what it means to be present and intentional. You’ve shown me that it’s okay to pause, take a breath, and care for myself when life gets overwhelming. Your i d
Dylan, your sincerity, creativity, and positivity truly light up every room you ’ re in You have an incredible ability to cheer others on and make them feel seen and appreciated. Thank you for always bringing your full heart to everything you do and for encouraging all of us to embrace our unique talents.
Aneiry, your reliability, leadership, and yes your amazing style are truly unmatched. You have such a unique ability to balance hard work with being an incredible hype-woman for everyone around you. Thank you for your dedication, your positivity, and for always showing up with such energy and grace.
There are so many others I wish I could name here, but please know I treasure each and every scholar I’ve worked with.
Last but certainly not least…
Nikole Juarez, I can’t say enough about the impact you ’ ve had on my life. You are a mother, a boss, a friend, and an advocate all in one. I don’t know how I’ll navigate life without your smile, your hugs, and your constant encouragement Monday through Friday. Thank you for everything you ’ ve done for me and for countless others. You’ve taught me so much about kindness, leadership, and showing up for the people who matter most.
This is not goodbye it’s see you later. Rotunda has meant the world to me, and as I prepare to graduate in December, I’m excited to see what’s to come and how this program continues to grow.
I hope I’ve left a small footprint here, just as it has left a life-long, lasting one on me.

COORDINATOR AILEEN SANCHEZ ‘26
This semester has been a whirlwind of activity, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
As I entered the semester, I was fresh off of a Study Abroad experience in Spain with PC Adolfo and my fellow Coordinator Aneiry. I would highly recommend looking into fitting it into your time at SMU!
As an RA, I’ve become a professional problem-solver, event host, and cheerleader for my residents, making sure their college experience feels just a little more like home.
Over in Rotunda, I’ve stepped into my role as a coordinator, helping to bring to life events like Paint with Us and Whole Latte Games, proving that art, board games, and snacks are a foolproof recipe for connection. Between planning, coordinating, and late-night brainstorming sessions, I’ve been diving into meaningful conversations in the Rotunda Book Club, where plot twists and moral dilemmas always keep things interesting
On top of all that, I’ve stayed involved with Ad Club, where I’ve been channeling my love for creativity into learning more about the industry. And, of course, there’s the juggling act of coursework, essays, and keeping my academic goals on track while still squeezing in time for friends and the occasional Netflix binge with Lolo, my cat. It’s been chaotic but rewarding, and if nothing else, I’ve mastered the fine art of balancing it all (sometimes literally, with coffee in one hand and my planner in the other).
All of that to say - make sure you take time for yourself and your friends. Being in good company and reflecting on the busy parts of life is a great way to make it through long weeks and assignments!
This semester has been an exciting time for the Performers Collective! Founded last year by Jacob Roco, the organization brings together musicians from all corners of campus regardless of major for collaboration, performances, and community building. After gaining temporary charter status this semester, the group has flourished, making significant strides in its mission to elevate student-led performances on campus.
The Performers Collective aims to increase student involvement in events such as Commons activities, multicultural organization celebrations, and large-scale campus traditions like Celebration of Lights. Members meet monthly to connect, play music, collaborate, and grow their network of performers. These gatherings are not just productive but incredibly fun, fostering a supportive environment for musicians to thrive.
The organization’s collaborative spirit extends beyond the Collective itself, involving partnerships with groups like Rotunda Scholars. Many talented Performers Collective members are also part of the Rotunda Scholars community, exemplifying the interconnectedness of SMU’s vibrant student life.
Rotunda Scholars in the Performers Collective:
Jacob Roco: President
Donovan De Jesus: Creative Director
Eden Engle: Violinist at Crumpkin
Isaac Nyberg: Bassist in newly-formed band The Bibbles
Noah Ochieng: Performed with Jacob at Celebration of Lights
Braylon Hughes, Sarah Tadesse, Lauren Lawshe, and Madelyn Fields: Performers across various campus events
The Performers Collective also boasts a growing presence on social media, with an Instagram account that has taken off this semester To explore their work, watch their performances, or get involved, check out their Linktree. As the group continues to grow, it’s clear we hope to continue creating a space for musicians to shine while enriching campus life with incredible student-led performances.
