THE ATTORNEY General is to review the detention sentences imposed on two young brothers who sadistically attacked two boys near Edlington. The brothers, aged 10 and 11 at the time of the attack, were detained indefinitely last Friday and told they would serve a minimum of five years. The Attorney General's office said it would consider whether the issue should be referred to the Court of Appeal. Some child welfare campaigners said the minimum tariffs were too short and asked the Attorney General, Lady Scotland, to examine the case. The attack involved “prolonged sadistic violence” and sexual humiliation by the brothers on their victims aged nine and 11. They were strangled, stamped on, hit with bricks and made to eat nettles during the 90-minute ordeal at a secluded spot last April, Sheffield Crown Court heard last week. Sentencing them, Mr Justice Keith described the crimes as “truly exceptional.” He said they were carried out “for no reason other than that you got a real kick out of hurting and humiliating them.” Mr Justice Keith said: “This was a prolonged sadistic attack for no reason other than to get a kick out of it. “There was a toxic environment at home and an atmosphere of violence.” The court heard that the brothers witnessed serious domestic violence against their mother and had a “toxic home life.” The boys' father threatened to slice their mother's face “to bits” with a knife. They were also shown “extreme” horror films. Det Supt Mick Mason said after the sentencing: “This was an extremely violent and unprovoked attack on innocent boys who were left with both physical and psychological injuries. “Thankfully, such instances are very rare but when they do occur, they have a devastating effect on the families and community.” Children’s charities and experts have said that the brothers could pose a risk to society for many years. If Lady Scotland decides that the sentences were too soft, she will refer them to the Court of Appeal and ask the judges to consider upping the terms.

SOUTH Yorkshire Firefighters have scrapped the eight-day strike that was due to start this morning after the fire authority agreed to refer the dispute to national arbitration. The Fire Brigades Union has also temporarily suspended all other industrial action. The dispute over changes to shift patterns has been referred to national fire service arbitration, known as the National Joint Council Joint Secretaries. The two sides are now in talks again over contractual terms of reference.

Ian Murray, FBU regional secretary, said: "The fire authority accepted our proposals to involve the national employers and union representatives. “Shift change and related issues will be referred to national arbitration and the strike action scheduled to start tomorrow will not now go ahead. “It is important this process is followed with a commitment by both sides to seek resolution. “This is a real opportunity for us to reach an agreement to end this longrunning dispute and in doing so avoid the need to continue with industrial action.”

Safety checks on old ELDERLY residents from Shroggs Head Close, Darfield, have been receiving visits from the Wombwell Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) to check on their welfare since the recently severe weather. The cul-de-sac, which is made up of around 28 bungalows, was practically impassable in areas because roads and driveways were blocked by snow and ice.

Many residents could not carry out basic errands for several weeks. Wombwell SNT and local Community Safety Wardens worked together to clear paths, making sure that areas outside the bungalows were properly cleared and gritted. The next Wombwell & Darfield Partners & Coomunities Together meeting will be held at 6.30pm on Wednesday, February 17, at the Illsley Road Community Centre, Darfield.

Capsule kids look to future

FUTURE generations of pupils at a Rotherham school will uncover a rare insight into the world of 2010 thanks to current pupils who have buried a time capsule on the site a nearby housing development.

The box of items representing the lives of pupils at St Thomas’ Primary School in Kilnhurst was installed at the Potter’s Court estate this week by head teacher Gill Ramsey and her pupils to commemorate the start of the new decade. Pupils and staff at the primary school have been busy collecting newspaper cuttings, stories, photographs, school sports T-shirts and uniforms, brochures, DVDs of school performances, drawings and poems. All of these were gathered together and included in the time capsule before it was lowered deep into the ground. Ms Ramsey said: “We were delighted to be involved and had a great time pulling everything together for the burial.” Liz Green, Sales and Marketing Director for Britannia Developments, said: "Potter’s Court is in the heart of Kilnhurst village and as such initiatives like the

The capsule has been buried in a secret location deep below a landscaped area of the Potter’s Court site, and is positioned in such a way to ensure that even as later phases of development progress it will remain untouched, only to be discovered by generations to come.

NEW LEAF: A forestry worker at Wombwell.

Woodland all set to branch out A WOODLAND area is about to much bigger as work gets under way to plant more than 20,000 trees. Forestry workers are beginning the project at Wombwell Wood, expanding it to the Upper Woodhead mine site and in total to 362 acres. The new trees will include 17,500 broad leaf specimens, such as oak, wild cherry and ash, with the woodland providing a new habitat for threatened species of birds such as the redstart and the wood warbler. The trees will join the old oaks of Wombwell, which date back many centuries. A further 2,500 shrub species made up of blackthorn, hawthorn, field maple, hazel, spindle, wild privet and dogwood will also take root. Together they will help add to the mosaic of habitats for wildlife, especially woodland birds, many of which are nationally under threat. South Yorkshire has been identified as a key location for species like redstart and wood warbler by the Forestry Commission and the RSPB. Andrew Powers, from the Forestry Commission, said: “This planting scheme is part of our continuing project to revitalise one of South Yorkshire’s oldest oak woodlands and a key site for wildlife. “Forestry is a long-term business and the trees we plant today will ensure this magical place thrives well into the future.”

Millers to build £20m stadium ROTHERHAM was given a huge shot in the arm this week with the news that the town’s football club is coming home to a new £20 million community stadium.

GROUND FORCE: Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart and son Richard at the site of the new stadium.

In what could prove a massive catalyst for the borough’s regeneration, Rotherham United chairman Tony Stewart confirmed that the Millers had signed a deal to build its new 12,000-seater home on the former Guest and

Chrimes site in the town centre, which he said would become “a jewel in the crown for Rotherham.” The plot, bordered by Centenary Way, Main Street and the River Don, could become a major gateway to the town centre, with plans in the pipeline for a range of spin-off uses such as pubs and restaurants catering for both fans and families. It is walking distance from All Saints’ Square and just a few hundred yards from where stateof-the-art new offices for thousands of council workers are being built.

Rotherham Borough Council chief executive Martin Kimber described the deal as “great news for the club, the fans and the town at large.” He added: “It will also provide a really impressive gateway to the town centre.” Barnsley and Rotherham Chamber of Commerce also welcomed the announcement, with spokesman Andrew Denniff declaring it “fantastic news for the town and its economy.” Mr Stewart said that the development would involve food outlets and a minimum of 500

car parking spaces for the stadium and the council offices. “We will not miss a trick in maximising the full potential of this

site,” he said. “Around 3,000 people used to work there and it is now being given a new lease of life.”

Cannabis caution A MAN was cautioned after Dearne police discovered two ounces of cannabis at his Thurnscoe home. Officers from the Safer Neighbourhood Team executed a drugs warrant at the Houghton Road property on Monday morning. The 23-year-old was warned that further drug offences could land him in prison. Dearne SNT PCSO Lee Rogers said: “We will continue to target those who partake in drug activity in the Dearne area. “Those who ignore the warnings could face tough penalties and a criminal record.”

Hunt for intruder POLICE have released an e-fit of a suspect after a burglary in the early hours at a Swinton house just after Christmas. A man was found inside the property on King Street at about 4.45am on December 27. The householder, a woman in her 40s, was in bed when she heard noises coming

from downstairs and went to investigate. She found the man in her kitchen and when he began to walk towards her she screamed and ran back upstairs. Later she found that a black waist-length leather coat, a Hewlett-Packard Laptop, a Sony PSP and Lynx toiletries had been stolen. The suspect is described as a white man in his mid-20s with a skinny build and approximately 5ft 8in tall. He was wearing a dark “puffa” jacket with dark trousers and had a strange walk. Pc Lisa Lockwood said: “Luckily, this incident was not as bad as it could have been. “The victim was not injured, only left shaken by the experience and hopefully someone may recognise the e-fit. “Unfortunately, a third of burglaries in Rotherham happen because doors are left unlocked and windows are left open.” ❑ Anyone with information should contact PC Lisa Lockwood on 01709 832 635 or email: lisa.lockwood@southyorks. pnn.police.uk or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on: 0800 555 111.

DO YOU KNOW HIM? The police e-fit of the burglary suspect.

MONSTER CRAFTS – BUTTERFLY PENCIL TOPPERS – This project is easy enough, and pretty enough, that you'll want to make more than one, they are lovely Butterfly Toppers that you can fasten to the tops of all your pencils. Materials: Coloured thin sheets of coloured card, Paper to make a template, Glue, Scissors, Pencils, Black pipe cleaners, Sequins, buttons or colourful decorations Instructions: 1. Take a blank piece of paper and fold it in half. On the fold, draw a heart shape without the point at the bottom (the point extends beyond the fold). Look at the picture of the template shape here to see what this should look like - when you open the heart shape, it should look like a butterfly! Fold 2. Once you are satisfied with the butterfly shape, use it as a template to trace on to your coloured card and cut out the butterfly shape on the card. 3. Now fold the butterfly shape on the card in half, and make two small slits close together, in the centre, as seen in the picture. This is where your pencil will fit. 4. Decorate the butterfly pencil topper with your buttons, sequens and decorations. 5. Insert a pencil through the two slits. 6. Take a black pipe cleaner and cut it in half. Twist around the front of the pencil at the front of the butterfly and make a loop at the tip of the antennas.

Mexborough School is the first in Rotherham to pilot a module dedicated to the strike and the aim is to educate young people about its significance, now and then. The overall goal is to see every school in South Yorkshire feature the historical event on the curriculum. Roy Huggins, head of history at the school said: “We’ve been studying our current module since September and it’s proving to be very popular with our students as it’s relevant and based upon a turning point in local history. “The Miners' Strike is an exciting, engaging subject and if we can successfully role it out, we hope that every secondary school in South Yorkshire will consider delivering it to their students. “We believe that the Miners Strike is central to helping young people in the area understand who they are, where they come from and the challenges that their communities have had to face over the past 25 years in order to survive the consequences.” Mr Huggins said that because of a lack of school text books on the subject, research and interviews with people associated with the strike had played a vital role in the students’ studies. Dave Douglas, who co-ordinated the Flying Pickets in Doncaster for the NUM, has already visited the school to talk about his experiences and artist, Rachel Horne, delivered a workshop on the impact of the Miners’ Strike on the lives of local women. “There is no denying that there were some negative aspects to the strike,” added Mr Huggins, “but you can not but admire the brave stand that the miners took to protect their jobs and communities. “We can all learn a lot today from the community spirit and the collectivism that united the miners and their families.” The school is asking anyone with photographs or willing to share their stories about the strike to email roy.huggins@virginmedia.com.

Lisa Dashwood, acting senior support worker, and Kayle Hudson, support worker, are based at Ivy Lodge in Thurnscoe and have recently gained LDAF level 2 and NVQ (Health and Social Care) Level 3 awards. The pair were presented with their certificates by service manager Paul Laycock. Ivy Lodge, which opened in June 2008, has close ties with the local community and has held a number of fund-raising events for charities in the area. WHAT A THESE pictures show how a stream and the garden of an empty building have been turned into a unsightly dumping ground. Horrified resident Judith Rosser contacted the Weekender to draw attention to the rubbishstrewn stretch of water in Swinton and demand that Rotherham Borough Council clean it up and punish the dumpers. The council said this week that it was already aware of the problem and hard at work on sprucing up the neglected spot, known locally as The Brecks. CCTV could also be installed to catch flytippers and deter litterbugs, they said. Mrs Rosser said that the garden of a building on nearby Lawrence Drive was a “disgrace” after more than a dozen black big bags were left stacked against the side of the building and strewn across the lawn.

Tyres, bottles, cans and other waste littered the stream near Fitzwilliam Street and the surrounding grassed banks this week. Mrs Rosser, of Rix Road, Kilnhurst, said: “It’s just terrible. Last week, we saw a couple of men from Streetpride came by and had a look of it but nothing has happened since. “The area is a disgrace, as is the state of the garden. “When I called the Streetpride number, they did not seem interested and I was referred to the housing department.“I felt like I was being fobbed off.” But Swinton councillor Ken Wyatt insisted that the spot was a known littering spot and was regularly cleaned up. “There is another major cleanup planned for that area and we have funding to instal CCTV,” he said. “This is a popular area for walkers and children playing and

it is not acceptable that it is in this state. “People throw even threepiece suites in the stream and leave dog mess there. “It is an important issue and it’s vital that the people of Kilnhurst and Swinton take responsibility for where they live as well.” A 2010 Rotherham spokeswoman said: "We have removed rubbish from the grounds of this property on several occasions following repeated flytipping. “The property is currently undergoing construction work to resolve damp and fire-damage issues. Several bags of rubbish will be cleared this week. “2010 Rotherham is also working alongside the borough council, South Yorkshire Police and local councillors as part of a special group set up to resolve repeated problems of flytipping in this area.”

Blitz on car tax

TAX dodgers in the Dearne Valley are being targeted as police officers launch a fortnight of random checks. Dearne Safer Neighbourhood Team (SNT) and the DVLA are teaming up to combat untaxed vehicles using specialist scanning software. The technology means that any individuals with no car tax will automatically be identified which will lead to their vehicle being clamped. If the release charge is not paid, it will be towed away.

This week is dominated by the change of the month and a potent Full Moon. You may also find yourself involved in some feisty exchanges - especially if you find yourself unsure of whom to spend your leisure time with. If you are looking to move in a new circle, an existing friend can feel pushed out. Or is it a partner who will try to dominate your time? Call now for your love scope in full…

Think back to the middle of last month. Then you may have had a very clear idea of where you were heading. Now fast-forwards to now. Are things still the same Libra? Umm, maybe not! The reason for this is that for all your hustle and bustle and the undoubted highlights of the year so far, you may find yourself having second thoughts, but if you do, just go with it. Call for more news and advice…

There may be someone you have to deal with on an everyday basis who is set to be a thorn in your side. If you are in a supervisory or management role, it may be an uncooperative colleague or at home, an awkward offspring or partner. Or perhaps you’ll find someone rather overbearing. Yet solace comes from a surprise thread, which can delight. Call me now for your in-depth forecast…

An overbearing attitude can disguise just how unsure you really are. Try to avoid getting snared up in politics, instead surf the dynamic energy of Jupiter and Pluto. They encourage you to dismantle the barricades and become more availing to the to and fro of conversation. This may leave you vulnerable, but you will also gain plenty. Why not risk it? Call now for your in-depth forecast…

If you love a good debate, you can be in your element this week, but then a pub quiz could see you sparkle too. Yet there's a fine line between harmless banter and getting into heated encounters which will do little for your blood pressure. Maybe you will have to stand up for yourself, and rightly, but disagreeing over trivial stuff, just isn’t worth the hassle Gemini. Call me for more astral advice…

There may be elements of your world that you want to change. If you are single, and have no outstanding obligations, why not? Yet if you have other people in the equation, this may prove much trickier. The trick will be to stay calm. To quietly explain what you want to do. If there is not instant agreement, don’t fret. It may be a compromise can yet be reached. Call me now for more news…

An unusual person can have a profound affect. This doesn’t need to be in a romantic context either it could be someone with dazzling business ideas. You could find yourself drawn to them like a moth to a flame but equally you can feel the need to suddenly separate yourself from someone else, whose company you are no longer enjoying. Call your special Cancer prediction line for more advice…

As you reach the end of the first month of 2010, do you feel satisfied with how you’re balancing up your in and outgoings? If so, you may feel that you deserve a little treat to celebrate. But just recheck your thoughts and your paperwork. Are you sure there are no bills or costs about to come out of the proverbial woodwork? Be prepared Capricorn. Call me now for your financial forecast in full…

This can be a crunch week for relationships, as Mars in Leo and a Full Moon in your sign, combine to stir some mischief. How? Someone you’ve recently met may no longer seem so enticing, or you may want to raise your dissatisfaction with a long standing partner. Yet if you are solo, an extra slice of confidence and devilment can draw someone spicy to you. Call now for your love scope in full…

You might come up against a major challenge or test, but that doesn’t mean that you are going to fail, it just means you need to be very sure of how you handle any kind of contentious issue. The best tact is to listen. You can be good at this, realising that even if people are unhappy, it’s better for them to get it off their chests and so it can prove. Call your special prediction line for more news…

Prevention is better than cure, so if one of your health resolutions has gone by the wayside, this is an opportune time to get a grip on things. If you feel under par, but can’t quite figure out why, don’t discount a psychological factor. In fact, the more you hold in any concerns, the more they’ll fester. If need be, arrange an appointment with your GP for a chat. Call me for more news and astral advice…

Is someone being truly genuine? If they're not, the revelation of this can prove upsetting. But then it may be you who is finding you want to flow in a new direction, and someone else will find this difficult. However, being evasive might, in the short term, save face or feelings, but when the truth eventually outs, it will just prove far more uncomfortable. Call now for more news and advice…

Dearne Valley Weekender, Friday, January 29, 2010

EVERY February, across the country, chocolates, flowers and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday?

The history of Valentine’s Day and its patron saint is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognises at

least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend states that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and

families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realising the injustice, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest

that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh prisons. According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first valentine greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his con-

finement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed, “From your Valentine”—an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legend is murky, the stories certainly emphasise his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic,

and, most importantly, romantic figure. It’s no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France. Some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial, which

19

probably occurred around 270 AD. In ancient Rome, February was the official beginning of spring and was considered a time for purification. Houses were ritually cleansed by sweeping them out and then sprinkling salt and a type of wheat called spelt throughout their interiors.

Confident Wale aims for winning ring return

WATH St James' impressive season continued as they travelled to high-flying Pontefract in the U17 Premier Division of the Charles Rice League.

JOSH Wale finally makes his eagerly anticipated ring return tonight as he faces the experienced Marc Callaghan at the Bellahouston Sports Centre in Glasgow.

Wale is under no illusions about the task at hand, but remains supremely confident. “The Marsh fight was a wake up call really. I just wasn't big enough for the weight and I was giving too much weight away to my opponents,” he said. “I moved down to bantamweight but no-one would fight me, so I've had to move up again for this one. “I'm definitely not looking past this fight. Callaghan has been in there with some top names. “I only found out that fight had been made on Tuesday, which is really short notice. But I've been in the gym since my last fight and right through Christmas, so I jumped at the chance. “I'm in top condition and very confident, I'm just dying to get back in there.”

Bulldogs stay in second place DEARNE Valley Bulldogs carried on their superb form with a convincing 44-10 victory over Morley Borough. The result keeps them joint second in the Pennine Amateur Rugby League Second Division, within a point of leaders Newsome Panthers. A competitive first 20 minutes saw neither side put points on the board, but an intelligent Morley try was converted to make it 60 in favour of the visitors. However, a gap in the Morley defence left a clear path open for David Johnson to score his first try of the match and level proceedings. Man of the match Karl Clayton crashed over the line shortly afterwards to increase their lead; the first of four tries for the enigmatic no.6. Morley didn’t give up hope after Clayton’s burst and looked to get back into the game before a typically powerful touchdown from Gaz Phillips effectively ended the game. David Johnson bagged his second just moments later, before the excellent Danny Cribbis crashed over the line to make it 44-10. The Bulldogs play fifth division side Silisden Park Rangers away in the Pennine Supplementary Cup tomorrow.
