H o s s e i n Abdollahzadeh, of Maple Road, Mexborough, was found unconscious in his cell at Doncaster Prison on Tuesday afternoon and pronounced dead minutes later. The 32-year-old was remanded in custody at Sheffield Crown Court last Friday, accused of drowning Polish-born Agnieszka Dziegielewska at her Swinton flat, and was due to enter a plea in April. An inquest into Mr Abdollahzadeh’s death was opened and adjourned at Rotherham Coroner’s Court yesterday. The court heard that the Iranian-born fast food outlet manager had been found in cell 354 of block 3D. A prison spokesman said on Wednesday that staff and paramedics had attended the scene shortly before 3.30pm. They had tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead at 3.50pm. q A SAFETY probe is underway after a construction worker was crushed to death on a cricket ground.
It’s time to go, says MP Ennis constituents. “I’m very lucky to have represented some of the most genuine and sincere people in the country. It has been a real pleasure and a privilege to serve them.” Neighbouring Labour MP Caroline Flint, who represents Don Valley, including Tickhill, said: “I will be very sad to see Jeff Ennis leave the Commons. He is a first rate MP, who has always put Barnsley, Doncaster and the Dearne first and Westminster second. “From my first days as an MP I could not have hoped for a more supportive and co-operative colleague. “Jeff is passionate about rebuilding coalfield communities and things we take for granted today, like the Bambury Bridge in Denaby Main and Robin Hood Airport, involved MPs pressing the case and Jeff was in the forefront. “Even in the past few weeks he has worked with me making the argument for the inland port and Jeff has been a staunch advocate of a new local link road. “Barnsley and Mexborough will have a tough job finding an MP with the same devotion to the communities he represents.”
MEXBOROUGH’S MP Jeff Ennis has announced that he will be standing down at the general election after 14 years at Westminster. Jeff Ennis, MP for Barnsley East and Mexborough, said he had made the “very difficult decision” to stand down “for a number of personal reasons.” Mr Ennis (57), added he wanted to quit while he “had the health and energy to tackle other activities.” He became a Barnsley councillor following a by-election in 1980 and was elected to represent the Barnsley East seat in December 1996 after the death of Terry Patchett MP. He was elected as the first ever MP for the new constituency of Barnsley East and Mexborough in 1997. In 2008 he was appointed deputy regional minister for Yorkshire and the Humber. Mr Ennis said: “This year marks my 30th year as an elected Labour representative at both local and national level. “It’s time to step aside and give someone else a chance. The thing that shall I miss most is taking up issues in Parliament for my local

Tippers targeted
FLY-tippers were targeted by a police operation aiming to stamp out a plague of illegal dumping in an area of woodland. Officers from the Wombwell Safer Neighbourhood Team teamed up with Barnsley Borough Council to tackle the illegal activity at Wombwell Woods as part of the operation last Thursday. Twenty vehicles were checked during the day-long operation and all drivers
were asked to show their waste carrier’s licence. The drivers of fifteen vehicles were advised by officers to apply for a licence to avoid future prosecution and two £60 fixed penalty tickets were issued to motorists for failing to wear a seatbelt. Pc Paul Jameson said: “It’s mostly commercial waste that is being dumped which is making the site look untidy and ruining the location as an area to visit for everyone else.
“The issue is down to plain laziness and we warn any potential offenders that they could face a £300 fine.” Vowing to continue to tackle Wombwell Woods’ fly-tipping problem, Pc Jameson added: “We will be increasing patrols in the area to improve this problem.” Advice on waste management and licensing is available from Barnsley Borough Council’s regulatory services on 01226 772468 or via e-mail to regulatoryservices@barnsley.gov.uk

MP on mission to save failing pubs
GORDON Brown has appointed MP John Healey to lead a team of ministers tasked with helping struggling pubs. The Wentworth MP, who is also minister for Housing and Planning, has been asked to develop a package of measures to keep pubs afloat. The move follows concerns raised by the Government about the number of pubs forced to close as a result of the economic downturn. It is hoped that the intervention from ministers will give pubs a helping hand and prevent further from going out of business. Mr Healey said: “Pubs are often at the heart of community life and are important meeting places for many people. “While we can't stop every pub from closing, it's right we do everything possible to back them. “But they need help now so I am determined to have a deal on the table with a package of practical help in the next few weeks. Measures suggested already include community ownership and revising planning policies to allow more flexibility over the services pubs can offer. A spokeswoman for Mr Healey added that Government action could not sustain pubs that were not viable but everything possible would be done to support those pubs that play an important community role.

Children and Young People’s Services Family Placement Service
Long Term Foster Carers Needed Long term foster care is the framework in which many vulnerable children live their lives and it holds the key to their future well being and happiness. For many children a long term foster family is the child’s best chance of a secure family life. Can you offer a heartfelt commitment to supporting a child through childhood and beyond, whatever the future might bring? Tom is eight years old and lives with his brother, Joe, in a short term placement. Tom likes playing computer games and playing outdoors; especially cycling. He loves being around other children. He likes school and is now catching up with his education after a period of haphazard school attendance. His behaviour at school is described as excellent although a further assessment is necessary to ascertain his full developmental and educational needs. Tom has already experienced a chaotic and unstable lifestyle, resulting in aggressive and unpredictable behaviour. Since being in the care of the Local Authority, and with firm boundaries, this has improved significantly. Tom is thriving with the love and consistency he deserves. Tom and his brother now need a foster family who can care for him on a long term basis through to independence and continue with the progress already made over the past 12 months.
Joe, Tom’s half brother, is 4 years old. He, like his brother, is fit and well. Joe is a lively child who enjoys playing with construction toys and art activities such as drawing and painting. He attends nursery and is progressing well. Joe loves interacting with other children. Joe and Tom have been cared for in a short term placement for the past 12 months and now need the permanence and stability of a long term foster family. Joe, too, showed aggressive behaviours when first placed but this has improved significantly with positive reinforcement and firm boundaries. The boys are dependant and loyal to one another. It is important that they are given the life chances and opportunities to develop as individuals. It is also important to note that a placement for both boys, together only, is being sought. If you feel you have the commitment, space, time and energy to care for these 2 boys long term, please contact Carol Stickland, Fostering Recruitment Training and Assessment on 01709 823976
If you feel you would be suitable, or would like to discuss it further, please contact the Fostering Team at:
Children and Young People’s Services, Fostering Team, 5th Floor, Crinoline House, Effingham Square, Rotherham S65 1AW Tel: (01709) 823963
Veronica is a lively, chatty and sociable 13 year old girl who enjoys the attention of adults. She likes reading, writing, drawing, swimming and music. She is also a popular member of a drama group and enjoys going ice skating occasionally with her friends. Veronica enjoys school and is average academically. She has no specific special educational needs and is making satisfactory progress. Veronica likes to attend after school activities. Veronica has 2 siblings with whom she has regular and positive contact. It is important that this is maintained. She also has occasional and less frequent contact with her Mum. It is anticipated that this will also continue. We are looking for a “forever family for Veronica. Someone who can care for her on a long term basis. This could be a single carer or a couple but it would be preferable if Veronica is the youngest child within the family so that she can be afforded the care and attention she has missed out on. If you think you can offer a nurturing, caring and stable home for Veronica, please contact Carol Stickland, Fostering Recruitment Training and Assessment on 01709 823976

‘Studying at the University has offered me more than I ever imagined it would. I started on a degree course in Business Management at the Barnsley Campus and a really friendly There’s there. time my I really enjoyed atmosphere and it feels like you’re part of a community because the Campus is smaller than average. I then went on to complete my Masters degree in Marketing Communications over at the Huddersfield Campus. Due to the contacts I made with staff at both campuses I was offered the opportunity to manage the running of the Barnsley Campus’ GraduArt scheme. GraduArt allows students from a variety of creative courses, such as Art and Design and Music, to sell their work. We did this during the Barnsley Christkindle Market and also in The Mall shopping centre. It was a great opportunity to gain experience in the real world, writing business plans and liaising with students and I really got to see the project develop into a success. I’m now planning to work towards my PGCE as I want to teach and inspire students, as I was inspired by my own tutors. The whole experience has been a learning curve which I have greatly benefited from, I have seen the University Campus Barnsley go through transformations, as have I. An Open Day is the perfect time to find out more about the University Campus’ courses and the facilities that you’ll be using, as well as the support which you can get with things such as grants and help with childcare. You won’t lose anything by going along and you’ll be really pleased you have. It can be nervewracking at first but once you’re there you’ll realise that everyone is in the same boat and that you’re not alone.’

TAX evaders have been hit hard by an operation which saw 18 cars clamped by police. Dearne Safer Neighbourhood Team targeted untaxed vehicles in partnership with the DVLA as part of the action carried out in Thurscoe, Goldthorpe and Bolton last Monday.
“Working in close partnership with the DVLA has enabled us to demonstrate how seriously we take the subject of untaxed vehicles in our community.
One Pc, eight PCSOs and two DVLA employees were sent to look into the problem and 18 vehicles were clamped as a result. Owners were ordered to pay a fee of £260 to release their vehicle as well as buying a new tax disc. A spokesman for the SNT said: “The operation was a complete success.
“The message is clear and unavoidable, if your vehicle is not taxed, it will be clamped and could end up being seized and crushed.”

Life is full of ebbs and flows and the incredible thing about this week is that someone who you thought was much in your past can either come storming into your consciousness, or turn up in person. Then again perhaps it will be you making the moves to connect with an old flame! With Mercury and Mars clashing, don't try too hard to make a good impression. Call now for more…
You may encounter a bit of frustration if some of your ideas don’t immediately work out. Try to see that every little step taken is another closer to where you eventually want to be. Sometimes it just isn’t possible to always make giant strides. Keep your eye on the big picture, but focus on the details too. One previously awkward person can be won over. Friendly links can open the door of opportunity and what an opportunity can present itself, with a real change of fortune a possibility! There is a potential snag however, for as much as you can fulfil your hopes, it may upset plans at home, where someone may prefer to maintain the status quo. This can leave you in a quandary. Who is going to give ground? Call for more advice…
Your ideal home could just become a reality, but it may be the one you currently live in, requiring just a bit more imagination. Visit fabric shops and soft furnishers. See if you can snaffle yourself some roll-ends, ones from which you can accessorise your abode with. In love, a gentle astral breeze suggests a kindly soul can tempt. Do avoid scraps at work. Call now for your love scope…
If you are attending an interview or giving a presentation, as long as you don’t try to force things, you can get your message across with clarity and also deftness and in a way which impresses those in the know. However, if you are too dogmatic, it could cause ructions. Yet this would be a great week to book that fantasy and rather exotic holiday Gemini! Call for your in-depth forecast…
If you're travelling, slow down. Enjoy the journey and the scenic views it offers. If you try to be some kind of latter day Steve McQueen, you’ll stress yourself out no-end and end up only arriving 15 minutes earlier. A tender side of your nature can also be bubbling away under the surface. Create some quality "you time" in order to get in touch with this. Call for more astral advice…
If you have long wanted to make your life a little more exciting, or even mysterious, it really is time to don your detective’s Mackintosh and get digging or researching away. Anything you share can see you rather outspoken. But behind any injustice you feel, it may be that Neptune and the New Moon are bringing out your more idealistic side. So much can actually be solved by talking things through. Try not to be hostile, instead quietly put your point across and a resolution can be found. Someone close by can ask you out. Call now for your in-depth forecast…
On one hand you could find yourself having an argument, on the other, if you’re fortunate enough to have a partner, you may get closer together than for a long while. You can be one of the most kindly of the zodiac signs, but don’t try to stop anyone from being generous to you. This will make them feel that you are not an equal and that wouldn’t do! Call me for your love scope in full…
The desire to spend money can be surprisingly high, for someone like you, who often sees beyond neat consumerism. However, you can also make some extra cash too, so there can be in, as well as outflows. Yet in some kind of relationship there could be somewhat of a squabble going on. This will be especially so if anyone tries to stop you speaking out. Call me for your financial scope…
If you are in an on-going relationship, be it a love tie or with someone close, there may be a painful issue that can jar on your senses this week or that of the other person. This may be something that has been festering in the background for far too long. Try to clear the air, be frank, for if you can, the chances of improved relations are very good indeed. Call for your love scope…
A little bit of bitching could be an unpleasant side product of this week, when someone who is inclined to discuss things behind people’s backs can cause a great deal of tension. Therefore, don’t take anything that you’re told at face value. Ironically, there can be some very sweet and well meant exchanges too. Focus your energies on these instead. Colourful start to New Year...
Dearne Valley Weekender, Friday, February 12, 2010
DEARNE Valley food fans are being encouraged to get their teeth into some old favourites over the coming week in honour of two special events. Next week is National Chip Week, while Sunday is Chinese New Year, so there’s never been a better time to tuck in to a tasty meal. Fish and chips is one of Britain’s favourite meals, even proving popular at celebrity weddings—fans are rumoured to have included Steven Gerrard and Alex Curran, Wayne Rooney and Coleen Mcloughlin and Myleene Klass and Graham Quinn to name a few. Did you also know: q The fish and chip shop market is worth £1.2 billion—that means £1 of every £100 spent on food is spent in a fish and chip shop. q More than a staggering 255 million fish and chips meals are sold in fish and chip shops each year. q Eight out of ten households buy frozen chips each year, so most of us have a bag in the freezer. q Over half a billion meals containing homemade chips are eaten each year. q A portion of chip shop chips contains less fat than a prawn mayonnaise sandwich. q A portion of oven chips will provide a third of your Recommend Daily Amount of vitamin C. q A serving of oven chips with three fish fingers contains one third of the saturated fat found in a serving of lasagne. There’s no doubt that plenty of people love a portion of chips but there’s also a lot to be said for a good Chinese meal, and what better time to enjoy one than on Chinese New Year. Traditionally, a colourful and joyous occasion, this is the day when many Chinese restaurants pull out all the stops with special events for food lovers. One thing’s for sure—whether you love chips or chow mein, you won’t be short of somewhere in the Dearne Valley to indulge.
There’s plenty of choice

Triathlon brings £60,000 boost DEARNE Valley folk will have the chance to work up a sweat this summer in a triathlon that is expected to boost the local economy by £60,000.
The first Dearne Valley triathlon which takes place on July 18, starts with a 1,500m open swim, followed by a 40km bike ride and ends with a gruelling 10km run. The event’s organiser, Paul Drinkwater, said that the triathlon would bring in money and be good for the people of Dearne Valley. He added: “From previous triathlons that I have been involved with, evidence has shown that just 200 people can add to the local economy by about £60,000.” “People come from all over England for these kinds of events and they are going to want somewhere to stay for a couple of nights as well as food. Local businesses will benefit greatly from it.” Among the people taking part will be Paul Bennington, who came up with the idea of the race. Paul, who works for the Weekender’s publisher, Garnett Dickinson, and is a member of the nearby Manvers Waterfront Boat Club, said that the event would be a good way of getting youngsters fit and was also evidence of the changing face of the Dearne Valley. “We need more young people to get involved in things like this,” he said. “It seems to me that people tend to stay at home and nothing is being done outdoors any more. “I think it shows that the area is changing
and more of a push to get people interested in fitness is always a good thing. It will be a challenge.” Triathlon is growing as a sport, with 1.1 million people in the USA participating in events in 2007. Mr Drinkwater, who organised a number of triathlons last year, said that he wanted to encourage mass participation in sport to make people fitter. The race will start with the section swim at Manvers Lake. The competitors will then move on to Dearne Valley Parkway, Adwick upon Dearne and Barnburgh. The triathlon is not the only new sporting feature of the Dearne Valley, as the lake where the race will begin is home to the Manvers Waterfront Boat Club, which is also making the push to bring top-class sport to the area. In April last year, the multisport club was formed, and plans were put in place by Canoe England to erect a boathouse ready for full use this year. Club chairman Chris Hawkesworth said that he hoped to produce champion canoeists by 2012, adding: “We are hoping to use it as an Olympic site with quality coaches and champion athletes. “It’s the only facility in the UK that can accommodate both quality canoeing and angling.” q The entry fee for the triathlon is £35 for members of the British Triathlon Association and £40 for non-members. To get involved, please call 07899 906482 or go to www.pdsportsmanagement.co.uk. Entry fees must be paid before the event.

Police arrest four
Clothes store chain calls in administrator THE future of a long-established clothing store is hanging in the balance after it was plunged into administration–with bosses blaming the weather.
The recession and freezing temperatures have contributed to a drop in sales at Ethel Austin Limited, which has shops in Wombwell and Rotherham. As a result, administrators MCR were brought in on Monday to search for a buyer for Ethel Austin and its sister company Au Naturale Limited. Across the country, 129 stores identified as making a loss started closing down sales yesterday but rescue by a purchaser had not been ruled out. But 404 staff at the distribution centre, which is to stop operations, have already been made redundant as well as 65 staff at the head office. Geoff Bouchier, partner at MCR, said: “The joint administrators are trading the companies in administration in the short term with a view to finding a purchaser for the businesses
POLICE have arrested a gang of alleged metal looters, thanks to a call from a member of the public.
as a going concern. In the current economic climate there are no guarantees that purchasers will be found. “We are reviewing the financial position of the Companies and are at this stage, unable to rule out store closures and redundancies.” Ethel Austin is one of Britain’s value clothing retailers with a nationwide network of nearly 300 stores. The business was established more than 70 years ago and has grown to become one of Britain’s leading value clothing retailers. Mr Bouchier said that the global economic crisis had hit the retail sector particularly hard. He added: “As a consequence of this the companies have struggled to secure funders, which in turn has had an impact on their ability to generate sales revenue. “This has been compounded by poor trading conditions in January attributed to the adverse weather conditions, which severely restricted the companies’ cash flow. “The companies have continued to seek additional finance up until very recently but without success.”
STILL TRADING: The Ethel Austin store in All Saints’ Square, Rotherham.
Officers from the Dearne Safer Neighbourhood Team arrested four men after a call alerted them to a suspected burglary on Queen Street, Goldthorpe, on January 27. The four men, aged 18, 21, 25 and 42, were arrested on suspicion of trying to steal a gas boiler and copper piping. They were later released on police bail until March 25. This week they praised the caller who contacted to let them know about the alleged raid. Pc Steve Bray said: “I would like to thank the person who made the call which lead to the arrest of these men and could of potentially removed four suspected thieves from the streets of Goldthorpe. “I would encourage other people to report anything suspicious they may see in their area so police can resolve it quickly and safely.”
Splashing fun in the holiday Advertisement feature THE excitement of half-term might be gripping youngsters across the Dearne Valley but it can leave a few dilemmas for parents, despite all the fun.
Finding exciting ways of filling the days should be no trouble for parents keen to get out and about with their brood in the Dearne Valley, though. And for those who still need to get to work, there is a vast range of child care services to take the pressure off. Doncaster Council is offering a helping hand with a fun-filled Breakout Spring 2010 activity programme. The Breakout Spring booklet—available from borough’s leisure centres—is packed with activities ranging from climbing and canoeing to ice skating and football, while a free Champion Sports Pass gives young people access to sports and leisure from as little as £1. There’s also free swimming for under-16s. And there is no better way to unwind afterwards than to relax with a meal in comfortable surroundings. Thankfully, a pub serving good food at great prices and with a child-friendly atmosphere is never far away in the Dearne Valley. So, all the fun of half-term need not be for the kids ... there’s plenty of ways that grown-ups can embrace that holiday spirit as well. To find out more about a Champion Sports Pass, visit www.doncaster.gov.uk/champion.

Plenty of promise as angling returns to normal WE had our first ice-free weekend since Christmas—a sure sign, fingers crossed, that things are improving. But it's still mighty cold and the snow doesn't seem to be disappearing and so a few degrees drop in temperature and everything could be back to normal. Frozen! The current respite saw venues that have effectively been closed begin holding matches again because of popular demand. Results too have been surprisingly good, considering the weather. There was a good turnout at Ravenfield for the Phoenix and Parkgate AC Winter League, when League organiser Harry Booth took the best catch with a 7lbs 3ozs net of roach, perch and rudd at peg 35 on the dam wall, alternating between the pole, waggler and feeder. Mark Glossop, at end peg 26, fished the waggler to find bigger fish for a second-placed 6lbs 12ozs and push Don Senior's 5lbs 8.5ozs into third and John Hartley's 5lbs into fourth. Neil Gabbitas claimed fifth with 4lbs 0.5ozs and Dave Cutts sixth with 3lbs 14ozs. Once again, vital bonus bream played a major part in the Group 35 AC
Winter League event, held on the Chesterfield Canal at Clayworth. Dave Gamston, at peg 13, managed two bream and a skimmer after walking the banks for a while to boost his small fish catch to a winning 7lbs 3ozs. Alan Payne at the next peg, 14, also included two big skimmers in his second-placed 6lbs 3ozs while only ounces separated the remainder. Roy Davis took third with 5lbs 12ozs to hold off Geoff Gladwin, who weighted 5lbs 9ozs for fourth. Paul Slack caught approximately 350 fish for a fifth -placed 5lbs 4ozs, beating Pete Parkinson's 5lbs 3ozs sixth placed net by just 1oz. Wentworth's Monday matches began again and hopefully will continue over the coming weeks until the venue closes for the normal spring break. Rob Cunliffe was the winner with a nine-skimmer net, taken with the feeder, for a weight of 6lbs 12ozs. Dave Pearson almost froze to death for a second-placed 3lbs leaving Dave Howitt to finish third with 2lbs 12ozs and Barry Owen fourth with 2lbs 10ozs. Big fish boosted weights at the Ferryboat Farm on Sunday. John Cun-
liffe included two tench, a chub and some decent bream in his winning 18lbs 8ozs net, while Arthur Bullcroft had an all-bream net for 16lbs 2ozs and second. 6lbs 8ozs gave Derek Jackson the third place and pushed Kev Stancil's 5lbs 14ozs into fourth and Paul Finch's 4lbs 4ozs into fifth. Thirty-six anglers fished the Walkley Winter League at Woodhouse Grange on Saturday on both the Dog Kennel and Kingfisher Lakes. Waggler and maggot on the Kingfisher provided the top weights. Leading the field was John Stone, who landed 34lbs 10ozs from peg 18. Close behind at peg 12 was John Dawson, who had 33lbs 2ozs for second, while George Bartholomew at peg 16 managed 26lbs 10ozs for third. The best weight on the Dog Kennel Lake was Ian Marsden, who weighed 20lbs exactly for fourth, followed by Keith Buxton who had 16lbs 4ozs for fifth and Steve Harper who was sixth with 13lbs 4ozs. Craig Singleton still leads the League with 151 points, but is now followed by Ian Marsden on 149 while Ivan Widdows and Andrew Morley are tying in third place with 148. Barnburgh Lakes held its first match for some weeks and R. Bergin took full advantage, winning with 34lbs 4ozs. L. Pearce was second with 28lbs 9.5ozs and R. Pearson third with 27lbs 6ozs. Saturday saw a Yanglers fundraiser open on the Main Lake at Lowfields, where newly-stocked ide and silver fish, together with odd perch to maggot and caster, made up most of the weights. 20lbs 11ozs was the best followed by 20lbs 8.5ozs and 17lbs 0.5ozs. Some excellent pleasure bags of silvers are being taken on the Main Lake and stockies and silvers on Riverside— when the weather allows—with light gear and caster, pinkie or maggot the order of the day. Twenty-seven anglers fished Kiveton Hall Farm's Sunday Open, which Steve Gill won with a huge margin, weighing 56lbs to bomb and meat from peg 14. Mick Rose at the current in-form peg 60 was second with 28lbs 6ozs, leaving Paul Massey's 18lbs 2ozs from peg 19 in third. Mick Todd and Ade Picton tied for fourth with 16lbs 8ozs each while Steve Harper took sixth with 15lbs 12ozs. lNET-MASTER... Harry Booth with his winning catch.

Running a typically aggressive race, he completed the tough 10k course in 40:33 to take the title with team-mate and former winner in 2008 Bob Tintinger following up in second with 42:03. With three runners required to complete the team, it was Terry Hawley who did the honours, finishing in fifth place (43:46) and confirming Rotherham as team champions. Mick Marsters, who won the title in spectacular style last year, put in a solid performance to finish sixth (44:01) after suffering from a series of injuries throughout this winter.

Hoole continues build-up
Team honours were also collected in the O50s race with captain Pete Neal leading by example to finish eighth (40:24), followed by Dave Nuttall in 13th (41:24). Martin Herrington (44:26) completed the bronze medal-winning team. In the O35s race, Paul Humphries was the first Harrier home in fifth (38:09) with team mate Gary Claxton sixth (38:38). Howard Darwin continued his fine winter form with tenth (41:25) in the O40s. Rotherham had three representatives in the women's event, with new signing Jayne Allen impressing again with a superb run to take fifth in the O40s 5k race (24:35). Sharon Burton was eighth (25:54) in the O45s and Gillian Taylor was fourth in the O55s with 27:13. Kimberworth Striders’ leading runner at Graves Park was Kevin Doyle, who finished 26th in the 035s race. Team-mate Mark Woodhouse was 35th.
THE Alsager five-mile road race always attracts a top quality line-up—and this year was no exception as a mass field made their way to Cheshire for this year's event. Among them was Rotherham's Phil Hoole, who is well into his London Marathon preparations and currently running over 100 miles a week in training. Hoole has raced less frequently this winter due to a variety of reasons and in finishing a respectable 22nd in 24:56 he knocked 16 seconds off the time recorded last year. Coach Pete Shaw was well pleased with Hoole’s performance as they had not reduced the training for this event and will now look forward to next week’s rearranged Yorkshire Cross Country Championships at Wakefield.
Jenny cards welcome win JENNY Blizard was back to winning ways as she negotiated the Ferriby 10-mile road race in 59:40. Hopefully this season will see her return to the form that gained her international honours not so long ago.

Metro to face rivals in semis ROTHERHAM Metro are through to the British Championship Finals, to be fought out next weekend in Manchester.
Swimmers land top club award
ROTHERHAM Metro swimmers achieved the top club award at their own gala, held at Ponds Forge. The success came despite tough
competition from such clubs as Borough of Kirklees and Kingston upon Hull. There were 40 gold medals, 38 silvers and 45 bronze medals awarded to the Rotherham swimmers, with 43
speeding tickets being given out to those that were too fast. Some of the Metro swimmers are seen above, with club captains, Daniel Mclean and Charlotte Pearson, accepting the winning trophy.
Two wins in their three group games were enough to book their ticket—but Norman Leighton’s side will have to topple the sport’s top national team if they are to get past the semi-finals. Metro opened with a 15-9 win over the Welsh Wanderers on Saturday in the final qualifiers, also at Manchester Aquatic Centre, and then effectively made sure of their passage with a 14-7 beating of Kent side Invicta. They were brought back to earth by Manchester in Sunday afternoon’s finale, the defeat meaning they went through in second place—and now have to face Lancaster, the
WATER POLO winners of the other qualifying group. The semis take place in Manchester next Saturday with the final the following day against either the host club or Bristol. In the win against the Wanderers, a tight start saw Rotherham lead 7-6 at the halfway mark. A 5-3 third period stretched the lead and Rotherham wrapped it up with three unanswered goals in the finale. Adam Scholefield led the way with six and Richard Leighton added four. Against Invicta, Metro stuttered their way through the first two periods to trail 5-3. But they turned the screw in the third to slam in a 5-0 period score and took the fourth 6-2. It was a different story against Manchester as Rotherham paid for a bad start before losing 15-6.

TEENAGE talent Jordan Watling is going full throttle to reach the bike racing big league in 2010. The 18-year-old from Conisbrough enters this year's Thundersport 600 Championship as the series favourite after an encouraging 2009. Jordan finished sixth in the Thundersport 500 series, bagging two lap records and six frontrow starts in the process. His achievements led to him being named the Thundersport GB Young Rider of the Year. As reported in the Weekender, his redundancy-hit parents even sold the family caravan to raise funds to keep him on the track. Now he's swapped his Honda CB500 for a Yamaha R6—paid for out of his own pocket— with the aim of making the step up to British Superbikes in 2011. Dad Andy said: "Jordan is determined he's going to win the 600s and there no reason why he shouldn't. "If he does well, we can use it as a stepping stone to get more funding with a view to joining British Superbikes next year. "The good thing is that the whole 500 series was televised last year and there will be even more coverage this year." Jordan will start practising on his new bike in the next week or so ahead of the first Thundersport 600 meeting on March 12, 13 and 14.
