ShelterBox Australia

Donations in Kind

Members will be aware that our club has recently donated $1000 to ShelterBox for the purchase of one more box for this highly regarded international relief organization. Our support for ShelterBox has been ongoing for many years and we recognize the ability of ShelterBox to instantly respond to humanitarian needs that result from earthquake, volcano, flood, tsunami, cyclone or conflict by delivering boxes of aid directly to those in need. Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and lifesaving equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless. Highly trained ShelterBox Response Teams distribute boxes from depots located around the world including Australia. (Melbourne)

PP David Cockshell, (RC Gawler Light) who is chairman of the D9500/9520 Donations in Kind program, advises that Rotary will likely benefit from surplus hospital equipment from the old RAH starting in March 2017. The DIK committee is looking for a Collections Manager to coordinate the collection, loading and transport of goods from RAH to our Edinburgh Parks warehouse as these goods become available. To give some idea of te scope of this collection , it may well involve some 700 electric hospital beds which, along with other goods indicates around 25 shipping containers (40’) over an 8 month period. This is a major project for Rotary. For more details, contact David Cockshell on 8522 6784 or 0401 995 996. 1

President Michael with Kathryn Finnigan At the meeting on 14 June, our visitor, Kathryn Finnigan from Soroptimist International, Southern Districts, outlined a community project which interests her Soroptimist group and which may interest us in giving both physical and financial support. A women’s shelter in Edwardstown, (Ninko Kurtangga Patpangga), which supports aboriginal women and children experiencing family violence, is in need of assistance by way of an upgrade to their outdoor play and recreation area. Kathryn suggested that we may be interested in helping cover an existing sand pit with a timber deck, plus providing some casual seating in the outdoor area. Soroptimists will be holding a Fashion Parade in September and some of the proceeds from this will go towards funding this project. The meeting agreed that we look at this project and Malcolm and Brenton will meet with Kathryn and the Shelter’s management soon to decide how best we can help.

Meeting 21 June 2016

R I Council on Legislation At the Rotary International meeting of the Council on Legislation which met in Chicago in April this year, a number of changes were approved which will allow clubs greater flexibility in when, where and how they meet and the types of membership they offer. These changes will come into effect from 1 July 2016.

Flexibility in meeting frequency, format and attendance.

Council on Legislation representatives voted overwhelmingly to eliminate limitations on how Rotary clubs conduct their meetings. They also recognize that club health is not determined by attendance At the meeting on 21 June we were fortunate to have alone. as Guest Speaker, Ralph Clarke, former MP and The R I Board and Council representatives agree that Deputy Leader of the State Parliamentary ALP Oppo- individual clubs should be able to: sition in the House of Assembly from 1983 to 1992.  Determine the best day and time for their Ralph held the seat of Ross-Smith and became Depmeetings. uty Opposition Leader under Mike Rann.
