Despite the high cost of living, it remains popular.

Future Meetings

Past Meetings

At our meeting on Tuesday 3 November, we will have as Guest Speaker the acting CEO of Minda Inc. Kym Shreeve. Kym will commence her talk at the start of the meeting (7.15) as she has work commitments at 7.45am. We will then continue with Club business.

Our meeting on 6 October was an open forum for members to discuss any matter relating to recent problems occurring within the club. The forum was chaired by Club Mentor, PDG Peter Ochota, and members who wished to speak were allocated 10 minutes. Most members agreed that the difficulties encounAt our meeting on 17 November, we will hear from tered were unprecedented as far as our club is conAmy Frisby=Smith who was our recently sponsored cerned and following the resignations of President participant on the “One and All” youth sailing experi- Marianne Harding and PP Rob Harding, we need to ence. work towards rebuilding confidence between each other and put aside personal conflicts. President elect Max Dalrymple agreed to take on the role of Club President until the end of June and this offer was accepted gratefully by members. Club Assembly on 20 October saw President Max elected formally as Club President until the end of June 2020. Max nominated his Board and these people were duly elected. The Board structure is listed on page 4. PP Mark Thomas will take up the role of Club Secretary and PP Peter Hammond will step down from that role when Mark is well again. The work of Rob and Marianne Harding was recognised and endorsed by those present. Members agreed that the payment of required fees for youth activities be considered by the Board on an individual basis and discussed with each applicant. Club members who individually supported Amy FrisbySmith will be reimbursed by the club. A final decision will be made after that.

Club Bulletin 3 and 17 November 2020 Youth Activities Under the guidance of now President Max, we have continued to support a range of Rotary backed youth activities which remain very popular among students. For many years we have sponsored a student to attend the National Youth Science Forum held at the Australian National University in Canberra each January. Because of the popularity of this forum, and also because of current COVID restrictions, the program has been expanded so that candidates can attend a Science Forum in their home State in January. Our candidate, Gabriela Coelho attended the orientation program for the January 2021 Adelaide group on Sunday 18 October and is somewhere among the group pictured below.

Getting Older (With the compliments of President Max)

A distraught senior citizen phoned her doctor’s office. “Is it true,” she said, “that the medication you prescribed has to be taken for the rest of my life?” “Yes, I’m afraid so,” the doctor replied. There was a long moment of silence before the senior lady replied, “I’m wondering then, just how serious is my condition because the medication is marked “NO REPEATS” First you forget names, then you forget faces. Then you forget to pull up your zipper…… It’s worse when you forget to pull it down.

In addition, it is worth noting that the Club Board will consider each young person we sponsor individually as to the amount of co-payment asked, based on our asEventually you will reach a point when you stop lying sessment of ability to pay. about your age and start bragging about it. The members at this week’s Club Assembly decided I love to hear, “you don’t look that old.” that two members be reimbursed for their generous financial support of our “One and All” sailor, Amy.

Bowker Street Reserve

A group of members met with two Holdfast Bay Council officers at the Bowker Street Reserve, North Brighton, on Tuesday morning 27 October. We have made a commitment to become involved with Council on the upgrade of the Reserve facilities near the Balmoral Avenue eastern entrance. There is a recently developed Community Garden which is in good condition and apparently popular with local residents. A good, clean sheltered barbecue area is nearby and is available to all. The small children’s playground is close but needs refurbishing. At this stage, Council thoughts are to upgrade the children’s playground, to add concrete seating with a mosaic covering nearby and to construct a “Book Nook” book and magazine exchange facility under a group of Casuarina trees overlooking part of the sports ground.

Council plans have not been drawn up, and all proposals are in a concept phase. Although our involvement is committed, we are not decided on what that involvement should be. The book exchange unit if placed in isolation among the trees is tempting mindless damage I think. The fact that the Community Garden needed a 3m high fence to protect it from vandalism and theft highlights my concerns.

Proposed location of “Book Nook” book and magazine exchange unit.
