Promoting health in Bhuj Team Rotary News

T

he Rotarians of RC Bhuj Wall City, RID 3054, observed World Kidney Day on March 14 at the government hospital in the city by organising an awareness campaign focusing on the importance of the kidneys and the impact of kidney disease and its associated health problems. Pamphlets and brochures were distributed to educate people about maintaining the health of their kidneys and how to take care of them.

Nephrologists delivered talks on the topic.

They also shed light on donation of the organ and dispelled myths associated with it.

World Kidney Day is observed annually on the second Thursday in March.

In another programme aimed at Rotary’s polio eradication endeavour, the club members set up a booth in the heart of the city and immunised over 700 children against the virus. n

Caring for birds T

he Rotarians of Rotary Club of Paonta Sahib, RID 3090, are distributing clay bowls in residential localities to provide water for the birds. “Summer is not bad just for us, but it is equally important for us to take care of the animals and birds,” says Himanshu Bhatia, the Club President.

He and his team urge people to hang the bowls on the branches of trees and fill them with water to quench the thirst of the parched birds and “it is so much satisfying to see these birds come and take a splash in the water to cool their body,” he says.

The club is also distributing bird feed along with the bowls.

The club members have involved the Interactors of their Interact Club of Wisdom School in this endeavour.n

Rotary Youth Programme energises Interactors Team Rotary News

R

otary Youth Programme of Enrichment (RYPEN) is a much-awaited event in Dombivli area of Mumbai as RC Dombivli Saudamini, RID 3142, used to partner with Interact clubs to stage a number of interesting shows for students.

This year, the club partnered with the Interact Club at ­Chandrashekhar Sane Vidyalay, Dombivli, to host a slew of daylong programmes that aimed to enhance the skills and talent of students through fun.

Starting with a yoga session by Rtns Suchita Desai and Jayashree Gadhade, it was followed by an interactive session with three

­ otaractors airing their views on R how to shape a career in diverse fields such as chartered accountancy, teaching foreign language and photography. They also helped Interactors to understand the role of Rotaractors in the larger Rotary world. A quiz contest was followed by a workshop on creativity where Interactors were taught how to make things like brooch, festive caps, and earrings from quilling paper.

A team of Interactors displayed their skills on salad decorations which they have learnt from YouTube and Pinterest. The programme ended with the District Trainer Abhay Kothari giving a talk on Rotary movement and how it evolved over the years.

He also distributed prizes to various winning teams and individual winners.

Rubella awareness In partnership with RC Dombivli North and other co-hosting clubs, a rubella and measeles awareness lecture was organised at the ­Rotary Bhavan in Dombivli. PDG ­Chandrasekhar Kolvekar was the chief guest and a panel of doctors gave talks on how to eradicate rubella through vaccination and the inoculation.

RC Dombivli Saudamini President Ashwini Sane took an active role right from initial meetings with the doctors and other clubs in coordinating this programme. n

A Happy School in Ahmednagar Team Rotary News

A makeover with colourful walls.

T

he Rotary Club of Ahmednagar Priyadarshini, RI District 3132, converted Panchshil School in the city to a Happy School. Under the project the classrooms were painted with digital art works exhibiting concepts about grammar, math and science formulas and proverbs were sketched on walls. An e-learning kit was installed at the campus. Hygiene kits and first-aid kits were arranged for the school which included a mirror, nail cutters, combs, dustbins, mops, shoe racks and geometry sets. Musical instruments and play equipment were also given to the school.

A water tank and water filter were installed. To ensure that the girls attending school are made aware of menstrual hygiene, club members arranged for guest lectures followed by the distribution of sanitary napkins. n

Rotary donates ‘Nali Kali’ tables in Shimoga Team Rotary News

W

ith the aim to promote learning through fun, RC Shimoga Midtown, RID 3182, donated Nali Kali tables and chairs to the Government Lower Primary School at Anupinakatte, a remote village.

Nali Kali, the concept of joyful learning, is being promoted by the Karnataka government in all primary schools up to Class 3 to ensure the students are kept happy and attend the school without fail. This Nali Kali Project cost `25,000 to the club.n

Aid for Gaja Cyclone victims

he Rotary clubs of RI District 3000 came together to provide relief material for people in the surrounding villages who were affected by the Cyclone Gaja that

created havoc in the southern parts of Tamil Nadu during last November.

Ample amount of groceries, dresses, bed linen and stationery items for schoolchildren were

distributed by the Rotarians of various clubs.

Nashik professionals get Rotary Vocational Awards Team Rotary News

or the last 20 years, Rotary Club of Lucknow Khaas, RID 3120, has been organising medical camps

which had benefitted thousands of needy families who were given free treatment and medicines by a panel of doctors.

One such camp was held at Visheshwar Dayal Inter College at Aliganj in Lucknow that saw a good turnout of patients.

They were examined by doctors and given free consultations, besides medicines.

A tailoring project was started at Shiv Mandir at ­Behta ­Saboli in the city and 30 ­women registered for training on the inaugural day.

In the first stage, four sewing m ­ achines were donated by ­Rotarians and more club members have come forward to contribute to the vocational centre in the near future. n

n the occasion of the birthday of DG Neeraj Chogani, RC Balotra, RID 3054, distributed sweaters and blankets to poor families in the Kachi settlement near Balotra at a total cost of `11,000.

The club also conducted an Ayurveda Camp in association with Dalmiya Seva Trust, Delhi, at the Rotary Bhavan in the city. Close to 90 patients benefitted from this camp. While 28 patients were tested

positive for sugar, 23 patients had asthma. Ayurvedic medicines were given to the patients and further assistance and guidance to benefit from the ayurvedic treatment was arranged.n

Driving to End Polio Team Rotary News

D

r George Alex, President of RC ­Thamaraserry, RID 3202, along with three other club members set out on a 15-day car rally from Kerala to the North-Eastern States of India and Bhutan, to spread awareness among the people about Rotary’s epic efforts in eradicating polio from 99 per cent of the world. They drove through Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and Bhutan, after being flagged off by DG E K Ummer at Thamaraserry. “We experienced the best of Rotary’s hospitality in every place,” says Alex.

In Erode the team was flagged off by PDG Dr E K Sagadevan who is the Coordinator for End Polio drive in South India. Lt Col Jaseer and Rtn Murali received them at Visakhapatnam and Berhampur respectively, while IPDG Ajay Agarwal hosted them in RID 3262.

and the dense forests of ­Kaziranga.

We even sighted a huge Indian rhino,” says an excited Alex.

At Sadiya, a small town in Assam, the rallyists met Fr ­Thomas who runs a vocational training centre. They interacted with him and the students, and highlighted Rotary’s transforming activities. In Meghalaya, they were struck by the “world’s cleanest ­village” — Mawlynnong, bordering ­Bangladesh, and chanced upon ­River Umngot. “Its water was ­crystal clear, so much so that one could see the river bed, in spite of the depth.”

Orange Festival at Dambuk in Arunachal Pradesh, an annual event which brings sports and music aficionados together, was the next stop-over. En route to the festivities, the Rotarians witnessed an accident in which the driver of an offloading vehicle was critically ­injured. Dr George Alex came to the aid of the car driver Jineesh, and reached him

to the nearest primary health centre, after administering first aid. As the PHC lacked the necessary expertise, they were asked to take the patient, who by then was unconscious, to the Dibrugarh Government Medical College, some 180 km away.

With speedy enquiries with RC ­Dibrugarh, Alex got the contact of Rtn Dr Momi Neog. Dr Momi tended to the patient at the casualty ward of the hospital. But since the patient’s condition was deteriorating, he was shifted to a private hospital where the facilities were much better. But despite the best efforts, Jineesh passed away.

With a heavy heart, the team drove over to Bhutan where they were helped by Rtn Yeshely Dorji for obtaining of the necessary permits to traverse the country and get the roadshow going.

The team returned to their home ground, filled with memories of new friends and more learning experiences. n Rotarians with the North-East people.

Medical camp benefits over 3,000 in Kota Team Rotary News

ith the support of ­Chambal Fertilisers and Chemicals Limited and Sharp NGO, the Rotary Club of Kota Round Town, RI District 3054, conducted a medical camp in Kota.

The camp was conducted in the first week of February and over 3,000 people benefitted from the project.

Patients were examined and treated for various ailments and medicines were distributed free of cost by doctors and paramedics.

Special attention was given to female patients by lady doctors.

At the end of the camp the club honoured all the 43 doctors who rendered their service along with 11 student scouts.n

I District 3141 is in its second year of performing an eye care project titled Oculus.

The Rotary clubs have undertaken to conduct eye screening camps in schools across the district and provide spectacles to correct eye vision for students who cannot afford such treatment. Through Project Oculus the

Rotarians are aiming to address preventable blindness, one of the major causes being uncorrected refractive errors.

During the last year the clubs provided spectacles to 5,500 schoolchildren from underprivileged families.

This year the clubs have together reached out to 8,000 children across 22 schools. n

otary Club of Jabalpur, RID 3261, organised a walkathon titled ‘Shakti March’ to celebrate the World Women’s Day on March 8. Gyaneshwari Devi and Biju John from Prajapita Brahmakumari were the chief guests at the event. It had a participation of 800 women.

An awareness programme on cancer and women’s empowerment was organised as part of the event.

The Brahmakumaris sensitised the participants on the significance of meditation on health.

The Club President Rachna Trivedi organised a seminar on ­ ‘Vegan-ism’ in the city which was attended by hundreds of people.n

aving found that many of the flood-affected people in the Wayanad region of Kerala were jobless or had lost their plantations, RC Calicut Uptown, RID 3202, joined hands with RC Pondicherry Beach Town to rehabilitate four families by providing farm equipment to them.

RC Calicut Uptown was one of the first NGOs to visit Wayanad and take up flood relief work on a war footing to serve the badly-affected villagers, said Jagadeesh Menon, Club Secretary. Even after the relief work, “our club members were in touch with the villagers whom we supported. Later we realised that many of the flood victims were jobless or lost their plantations (or crops) as the fertile topsoil was washed away in the flood.”

Through networking with other clubs and NGOs, the club members were able to prepare a checklist of requirements sought by the residents at Vellamunda panchayat in Wayanad. After a discussion with local officials and philanthropists, the partner club RC Pondicherry Beach Town mooted the idea of giving ‘livelihood aids’ to well-identified beneficiaries who were in dire need of support, said Menon.

Farm tools, namely Kasei brush cutter (`16,900); Kasei earth auger (`18,800); power sprayer with ST gun and hose (`13,100); and Kasei chain saw (`11,300), were presented to farmers and farm ­labourers.

The beneficiaries thanked Rotarians for the useful tools which would help them earn a decent livelihood after the floods ravaged their plantations.

New house for a family In another initiative, the club built a house for two school-going girls and their parents who were staying in a temporary shack in Beypore.

One visually-impaired Musthafa, a philanthropist and teacher, took an impossible task of constructing a pucca house for his girl student, pointed out Menon.

“Musthafa knocked the doors of many organisations and individuals to gather money for the project. Though he had began the construction, he was not able to complete it. Then through is friend, he approached our club and we gave full support through generous donations (`40,000) to complete the house for his student.” The house key was presented to the family in the presence of local celebrities. n

ith the aim to further strengthen ties between the two entities, RC Ivory City Mysuru, RID 3182, has entered into a sister club arrangement with RC de Senhora de Hora, Portugal, during the visit of that club’s President Jorge Amaral.

Dr Amaral has been a pillar of support to ophthalmologists in India in providing eye care to the people. He is offering assistance for the Preventable Blindness programme being carried out by the Rotary Clubs of Bangalore Koramangala, E-club Bangalore and Usha Kiran Hospital, Mysuru, by way of contributing towards The Rotary Foundation Grants for implementation.

a loan of `5,000 each to start their micro enterprise.

For the Gaja cyclone victims, the club mobilised `5 lakh worth of relief material including groceries and

motivational and awareness camp was held at the Government Girls HS School by RC Villupuram, RID 2982, with the guest speaker S Pugazhendhi, chief coach at Vision School in Puducherry, giving a speech laced with interesting anecdotes to ­encourage students to set their goals high and go for it. More than 400 students took part in the camp.

Rtn Dr V Sudha delivered a guest lecture at the Government Girls High School to mark the World Hygiene Day that was observed by the clubs throughout the district. Around 400 students were present at the event.

An IVF (in-vitro fertilisation) camp was held at VRP School, Villupuram, in partnership with the Billroth ­Hospitals, Chennai. The special camp saw a good turnout of childless couples for ­consultations.n

The government hospital in Chidambaram is one of the largest beneficiaries of Rotary’s projects.

n a thoughtful gesture, RC Chidambaram Central, RID 2981, donated steel cots and wheelchairs to the government hospital. The paramedical staff were also given mementoes for

RC Madras T Nagar An awareness rally on eye donation was organised in partnership with Rajan Eye Care for the 17th year in succession. Film personalities and celebrities take part in these rallies. RC Sundargarh Town Glucose water was distributed by Rotarians to the marathon runners during the promotion of Hockey World Cup in Odisha. The promotional event enhanced the image of Rotary in the neighbourhood.

RC Belur A grand lunch was provided for the children of RCC at Arupotta village on the occasion of Saraswati Puja. A black board was donated to them to learn English in a day filled with fun activities.

RC Kasba A neglected toilet block at a congested area near the bus stand was cleaned up by the Rotarians.

The toilet owned by the Corporation was in a pathetic state, but was being used by at least 1,000 persons throughout the day. The sanitation facility was made hygienic by the club.

Focus on women’s health in Aurangabad Team Rotary News

A nutrition programme for women.

n International Women’s Day the Rotary Club of Aurangabad Cantonment, RI District 3132, conducted a programme on healthy eating habits and diet control. The nutrition programme was held for

women in general and also at Assisi Asha Niketan, a home for special children.

The programme was conducted

by Dr Farhana and students from the Indian Institute of Food Science and Technology. Students presented a

detailed diet plan which was later given to special children.

Club members visited a home for destitute women — Vimala Sadan — and distributed sarees and food kits to the inmates.n
