Partnership Between Rotary Club of Innsbrook and YMCA of Greater Richmond
Two Decades of Service to Local Youth For over two decades, the Rotary Club of Innsbrook has been a key partner in the YMCA's Bright Beginnings program, ensuring children in need have the tools to start the school year with confidence But the story of this partnership goes back to a chance moment that sparked a movement
Bright Beginnings began in the early 2000’s when Mary Theobold, a Tuckahoe YMCA board member, asked if there were families in need of help getting their kids ready for school Jim East, a Tuckahoe YMCA board member and Innsbrook Rotarian, invited Bev Jennette, Associate Director of the Tuckahoe YMCA, to speak to the Rotary Club about the idea. Bev’s presentation inspired the club to pass the hat, raising $1,300 on the spot, just before the start of the school year.
On the Saturday before Labor Day, Rotary members, YMCA staff, and volunteers met at Walmart to shop for 13 children, providing them with clothes, backpacks, and school supplies. The event was a success, capped off with a treat of hot dogs and a photo for each child and volunteer. This spontaneous act of generosity marked the birth of the Bright Beginnings program
Kay King, a member of the Rotary Club of Innsbrook and Executive Director of the Tuckahoe YMCA, helped guide the program’s growth. Under Bev’s leadership, Bright Beginnings expanded, engaging volunteers from companies like Philip Morris and Bank of America, as well as multiple Rotary Clubs. Tuckahoe YMCA supported Crestview Elementary, while the Shady Grove YMCA, also overseen by Kay, partnered with the Innsbrook Rotary to help children at schools like Woodman West.
What started as a small initiative is now a yearly tradition, serving hundreds of children and making a lasting impact in the community

Since that first spontaneous shopping trip in 2014, the Rotary Club of Innsbrook has been a driving force behind Bright Beginnings, sponsoring hundreds of children each year and volunteering countless hours to make the experience memorable for local youth “Service Above Self” is more than just a motto for the Rotary; it’s a way of life. The club’s commitment to Bright Beginnings has grown from that initial $1,300 donation to a long-standing, deeply rooted community tradition.
Every year, the Rotary members shop with children, helping them pick out clothes, shoes, backpacks, and supplies to ensure they feel prepared and confident as they enter the school year For many children, this is their first time experiencing the joy of new school essentials, and it leaves a lasting impact not just on the students but also on the volunteers.
“We’re not just preparing kids for school; we’re giving them confidence and reminding them they matter,” said Lisa Hollier, a dedicated Rotary member with a deep passion for the Bright Beginnings program “The joy on their faces when they leave with their new items is absolutely priceless.” Rotarians posing for a picture after distributing school supplies to deserving Kids in 2024

The Rotary Club of Innsbrook, part of Rotary International, has always been focused on creating positive change in the community With projects ranging from global health initiatives to local education programs, the club has made a significant impact over the years Bright Beginnings stands out as one of their most cherished endeavors, highlighting their dedication to the future of Henrico County’s youth.
The Shady Grove YMCA, part of the YMCA of Greater Richmond, has long been committed to the development of children and teens Through programs like Bright Beginnings, the YMCA ensures that all children, regardless of financial circumstances, have the opportunity to start the school year on equal footing with their peers By providing clothes, backpacks, and school supplies, the YMCA fulfills its mission of nurturing the potential of every child
As Bright Beginnings continues to grow, the partnership between the Rotary Club of Innsbrook and the Shady Grove YMCA remains stronger than ever. The impact of this collaboration can be seen in the countless lives touched by the program, which now serves hundreds of children annually From its humble beginnings, Bright Beginnings has blossomed into a shining example of what community organizations can achieve when they work together with a shared purpose
“Our partnership with the Rotary Club of Innsbrook has been invaluable. Together, we’re not just meeting immediate needs; we’re building a brighter future for these children and our entire community.” s

Success starts with education! Education, one of RI’s areas of focus, was front and center at Rotary Club of Hanover’s weekly meeting Stephen Trexler, Head of Hanover County Adult Education, gave a presentation highlighting GED preparation and English Language Learning
The GED preparation provides targeted instruction to help students prepare for the official GED exams Classes are designed to meet the needs of adults 18 and older, not currently enrolled in public schools. English language learners is a program designed to meet the needs of adults 18 and older, not currently enrolled in public schools, who want to improve their conversational English. Learning English helps with work, in the community, and speaking with children’s teachers. In class the students speak, listen, read, write, and understand American culture
Our Club is deeply supportive of education in both traditional and non-traditional ways. In addition to learning about alternative literacy approaches we have already supported for many years the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and our local public library

By Being Intentional, We Can All Make a Difference
At some point in your life, a friend, colleague, or acquaintance asked you to join a local Rotary Club From that invitation, you learned about Rotary, and what it stands for, and it fit your vision of how you want to go through life We all joined Rotary for our own reasons, but we stay because we know that we can make a difference in our community, region, or even across the world.
Rotary International took on the challenge of eradicating the poliovirus from the world as a way to make our communities, regions, and the world a better place Rotary International brought together partners, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), The Gates Foundation, and several others to form the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) This is a group that aims to eradicate the poliovirus, by immunizing every child, multiple times
That being said, the GPEI and Rotary International continue to need the support of Rotary members to reach every child As of September 19, 2024, there are 36 cases of Wild Polio – 19 in Afghanistan and 17 in Pakistan In the past two weeks, there have been two new cases in Afghanistan, which is particularly alarming as the Taliban has suspended all vaccination campaign in the country (https://www.pbs.org/newshour/world/un-taliban-suspended-polio-vaccination-campaigns-in-afghanistan).
Also of concern is a case of polio in Gaza, not Wild Polio, but a case that is the result of under vaccination The weakened strain of the virus used in the vaccine mutated in the environment, which infected a child. A humanitarian pause in the fighting allowed teams to enter the conflict areas and vaccinate almost 560,000 children under the age of 10 in twelve days. The partners are working towards a second round of vaccines in 4 weeks with a second dose of nOVP2 This is a novel vaccine that has been engineered to reduce the infections caused by under-vaccination and mutation, which has been very successful

How can you help? As a Club, set a goal to raise at least $1,500 this year. As a Rotary member, please consider contributing $100. By pledging to contribute $100 per year until polio is eradicated, you are eligible to join the PolioPlus Society (PPS). You can join the PPS at the District Foundation webpage - https://www rotary7600 org/index/foundation/polio-plus-society/ Complete the commitment form, and you can make your donation by:
· Sign-in to your account at myrotary.org/donate, and click on “Polio Fund” You can choose a one-time donation of $100 or more, or a recurring donation in the amount and frequency of your choice
· Or, you can write a check payable to “The Rotary Foundation,” with PolioPlus in the memo section, and give it to your club’s Foundation Chair.
I want to personally thank each Rotary member that contributed to the PolioPlus fund last year. Many of you contributed $100 or more, and I would like to recognize you as a member of the PolioPlus Society. I will be reaching out to each of you, but don’t wait on me to complete the commitment form mentioned above. Yes, I have special PPS lapel pins!
World Polio Day is October 24, 2024, which is a great opportunity to hold a PolioPlus event Partner with a favorite business for a “Purple Pinkie” event, or perhaps “Pints for Polio” , or “PuttPutt for Polio” Or plan a meal together at the World’s Greatest Meal - https://wgmeal org/ Remind your members about polio at your club meetings for a month by setting out Red Cups and asking for donations
By being intentional, we can all make a difference.

District 7600’s Mental Health Task Force (MHTF) is dedicated to strengthening resilience across our community, with a special focus on youth and our fellow Rotarians. While we are piloting a program to equip youth with essential resilience skills, these tools are invaluable for everyone, helping each of us "bounce back" stronger from life’s challenges.
At the Rotary District 7600 Conference, we had the pleasure of introducing our pilot program, designed to cultivate mental and emotional resilience in young people. However, we also believe that all Rotarians whether as leaders, parents, or community members—can benefit from developing new strategies to enhance their own resilience, turning obstacles into opportunities for personal growth
We shared the following practical tips at the conference, which you can begin implementing today. You’ll also find more in-depth resources through our collaborator, HealingEdu org:
Nurture Healthy Relationships
Meaningful relationships are the foundation of resilience. Invest in connections where mutual trust, support, and respect thrive. Whether at home, at work, or in your community, open communication and empathy create a safety net for when life gets tough
Practice Empathy and Compassion
Life’s challenges often require us to extend grace not only to others but to ourselves. By practicing empathy and compassion, you’ll foster emotional resilience Remember, it’s possible to be kind while maintaining healthy boundaries
Engage in Purposeful Activities
Resilience is built when we engage in activities that bring fulfillment and connect us to something larger than ourselves. Whether it’s volunteering, creative pursuits, or professional growth, choose actions that align with your values and sense of purpose.
If you're eager to deepen your capacity for building meaningful relationships or know youth who could benefit from learning these skills, we invite you to get involved!
We are actively seeking co-facilitators for our Youth Resilience Skills and Peer Facilitation Program, supported by a generous grant from SentaraCares For more information or to volunteer, please contact MHTF Chair Susanna Calvert at Susanna@HealingEdu org

The Youth Service Committee is in need of a Youth Protection Officer. This role is crucial to all of our youth programs; (e g RYLA, Youth Exchange, Interact, Empowering Girls and our Mental Health Resilience Program ) Rotary International has a Youth Protection manual and we have District resources to ensure anyone that steps into the role is successful The job description is as follows:
District Youth Protection Officer
Monitor changes in national and local laws related to youth protection.
Inform all Rotary members of their youth protection obligations.
Confirm that appropriate screening measures are used for all youth programs
Make sure that volunteer screening is documented appropriately
Ensure that appropriate training is provided to Rotary members, and other volunteers
Oversee the proper handling of allegations
Work with the district governor to maintain confidential records

We are thrilled to announce that we are in the final stages of establishing a new Interact Club at Glen Allen High School! Interact is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young leaders ages 12-18, providing incredible opportunities to develop leadership skills, connect with peers, and have fun all while making a positive impact in their communities and learning more about the world around them.
This fantastic initiative began under the leadership of Susan Klingensmith Bishop, our Immediate Past President, whose vision and dedication have been the driving force behind this project This effort truly showcases how Rotary’s commitment to service and community-building goes beyond individual terms of office, fostering continuity and sustained success
A special shoutout to Kevin Fachetti, our Vocational Service Chair, for his pivotal role in this endeavor! His ongoing communication with both students and the School Advisor has been instrumental in moving this initiative forward William Sutton, our Community Service Chair, has also been a key collaborator with Kevin, working diligently to bring this vision to life We are especially excited to announce that William’s daughter, McKinley, will serve as the Charter President of the Interact Club! McKinley has already shown great promise through her participation in several RYLAs and is poised to become a remarkable leader with a bright future as a Rotaractor and Rotarian.
We are also deeply grateful for the guidance provided by Sasha Reynolds from the Rotary Club of Prince George County, whose valuable insights have been crucial in navigating the process of chartering this new Interact Club
Stay tuned for more updates as we move closer to officially launching the Interact Club at Glen Allen High School! Thank you to everyone who has supported us in this endeavor. Together, we are empowering the next generation of leaders!

Greetings, Rotarians!
I’m excited to share that our district has seen a positive gain of 16 new members so far this year This is a commendable achievement and a testament to the hard work and dedication of each one of you
However, we’re currently at a Negative 5 on the success track, indicating that we still have some ground to cover to meet our targets. As a District we have 44 clubs that do not have a membership goal in the Membership Success Center (MAP) We are making solid progress, but to reach our goals, we need to utilize the tools that help make membership growth easier
Big shout out to the following clubs for coming out of the gates strong:
Leading the pack at a Plus 3 so far for the year we have West Richmond and New Kent
Following close behind at a Plus 2 so far for the year we have Goochland County, Great Bridge, Hopewell, Norfolk, Petersburg (Breakfast), South Richmond, Town Center Virginia Beach, Franklin and Smithfield.
Exciting New Initiative: Join the Club Assistance Team!
We are thrilled to announce a new initiative in collaboration with the Zone 33 team: the creation of a "Club Assistance Team " This team will be specially trained to identify clubs that could benefit from additional support and provide strategic assistance to help them thrive
Members of this team will receive training from some of the brightest and best in Zone 33, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to elevate our membership efforts If you’re passionate about making a difference and would like to be part of this groundbreaking initiative, please reach out to DMC Tracy Lego to express your interest and get more details.
Don’t Miss the Membership Mini-Summit!
Be sure to attend the Membership Mini-Summit at this year’s District Conference. This session will cover: Attracting New Members: Strategies for bringing in fresh talent to our clubs.
Service Projects & Public Image: How to leverage our projects and enhance our visibility to recruit effectively
Technology Tools: Tips and tricks for using technology to build and manage membership
Special Guest Patrick Longano: Patrick is one of the innovators of the “Companion and Impact Club” models that will share proven strategies for innovative club types and membership growth.
This is a valuable opportunity to gain insights and connect with fellow Rotarians focused on membership. Let’s come together to explore new ideas and drive our membership numbers to new heights!

The Magic of International
Your Benefits as part of a Global Rotary Community
By Al Mink, District International Chair
If you’re reading this, you’re embarking on the first steps of our journey into the Magic of International. This is the inaugural article of what will be a new monthly byline in the newsletter exploring how you and your club benefit by being part of a Global Rotary Community
I’m your District International Chair and will share with you what I’ve discovered in my journey over the world – enriching me through connections with local Rotarians while growing my service impact to those in need
Sure, some of this international stuff relates to Global Grants – that’s important of course, but it’s only a small part of being part of the Global Rotary Community Beyond grants, we’ll explore how international comes to us in District 7600. We’ll also hear about how we can reach out and connect overseas to grow relationships with like-minded Rotary clubs from other countries -- much like how some cities have linked up to form sister cities with overseas cities
Most of us probably know some of the benefits of Rotary being International. It’s our intention to surface more of these benefits so you can better leverage the Magic of International Rotary provide -- for yourself and perhaps also to recruit new members who will value the benefits of being part of an organization with global reach and global engagement.
Looking ahead, I welcome your ideas about what you would like to see in this column and the insights you’ve discovered about International that you would be willing to share with your fellow Rotarians. Give me a shout by email: almink@systemsspirit.com.
Oh yes, you can reach me by WhatsApp, Line, and other international messaging apps too! “See you” next month at this same place in our D7600 newsletter.
