Celebrating 40 Years Raising Funds for Local Charities
Doing anything for 40 years is an accomplishment. Raising funds for local charities for 40 years is impressive! Cape Henry Rotary was founded in 1984 and in that first year began the oyster roast tradition to raise monies for local Hampton Roads charities Forty yearsthat’s a lot of oysters!
Virginia Beach’s best party is back, and local charities are once again the beneficiaries! The 40th annual Oyster Crush Fundraiser, hosted by the Cape Henry Rotary Foundation, will occur on Sunday, October 6, 2024 from 1PM-6PM at Ballyhoos Restaurant. “We are continuing our tradition of hosting a massive oyster roast and party for a cause, and since 2015 the event has raised over $340,000 for local charities, scholarships and youth leadership programs in the Hampton Roads area” stated Roberto Westbrook, Chairman of this year’s event
Ticket price is $75 and includes all-you-can-eat oysters, raw or roasted over a wood fire, steamed clams, along with a full meal including BBQ and fried chicken, and drinks. Beer is included in the ticket price. Dance all day to live music and a DJ. The Club also has a shuttle service to provide rides to/from designated off-site parking locations
According to Cindy Stover, President of the Cape Henry Rotary Club, “Last year, our guests and amazing sponsors helped raise $33,000 which supported a variety of local charities, scholarships and Rotary Youth Conference fees. We know these Hampton Roads charities are making a difference in our local area on a day-to-day basis. Our community, including many fellow Rotarians from other Clubs, have been great supporters of our Oyster Crush efforts and we are hopeful they will continue that support in 2024”. For more information about Oyster Crush, and to purchase tickets, see oystercrush.com . OYSTER CRUSH 2024-EAT, DRINK, DANCE + HAVE FUN!

Every Rotary year, District Grants are awarded to Rotary Clubs with funds from prior years’ Annual Fund giving to The Rotary Foundation. These funds are affectionately known as “DDF” or District Designated Funds
For the 24-25 Rotary Year, $120,746 will be awarded to 14 projects across the District. These projects will share the magic of Rotary by assisting food banks; the construction of outdoor bike repair stations and the revitalization of parks; the building and expansion of outdoor learning areas for children; assisting with the education, care, and treatment of our special needs youth; and so much more!
The District Grants Committee would like to extend a special salute to the Virginia Commonwealth University Rotaract for its project to provide an educational program at a juvenile detention center This grant will be the District’s first Rotaract-lead District Grant project.
The District Grants Committee is excited about the impact our funded projects will have in the community. We are continuously working to improve our process and welcome your valuable feedback The Development Committee is busy attempting to increase contributions to the Rotary Foundation The more money raised by the District will result in even more projects and a greater impact in our communities. Your generosity in donating to the Annual Fund is crucial. So if you are able to increase your giving, more clubs in the District will be able to Share the Magic and Impact of Rotary with their communities

We do We welcome a new District Governor, a new theme and an opportunity to make additional impacts through the Rotary Foundation The District Rotary Foundation Committee (DRFC) is working on the Foundation’s strategies and goals for the coming year. Our objective is to grow our giving and increase District 7600’s impact throughout the world. District 7600 will continue working to make miracles and magic occur through our leadership’s passionate service
District 7600 enjoys a strong culture of giving I stand on the shoulders of giants that have led the DRFC Each of my predecessors have left the woodpile higher than they found it in some meaningful way. Our team understands and appreciates the need to stack the wood a little higher for the next team that will continue the work of the Foundation in this District We do not need to pursue “big hairy audacious goals” Yet, by incorporating the Japanese philosophy of Kaizen making small, incremental improvements every day we can work with the District leadership team to pursue some amazing goals Kaizen emphasizes the importance of continuous, daily efforts to improve processes and outcomes. The DRFC team is working with District Governor Joy Kline to break down our ambitious targets into manageable actions, ensuring steady progress and sustained success
This year, we are inspired by the guidance and vision of Rotary Foundation Chair-Elect Mark Maloney, who introduced “Magic Markers” at the annual Assembly of incoming District Governors. At the Assembly, Past Rotary International President Mark Maloney’s passion for our Foundation was palpable. He laid out a strategic roadmap for both Club and District leaders to follow, aimed at increasing Rotary’s Endowment to $2.025 billion by 2025. His "Magical Markers" serve as actionable steps to bolster our efforts and ensure sustained growth and impact
District-Level Magic Markers
For District leaders, Mark Maloney proposed several key actions:
1. Lead by Example: District leaders should contribute to the Annual Fund by August 31st and to the Endowment by December 31st.
2 Increase Rotary Direct Donors: Aim to boost the number of Rotary Direct donors by 10%
3 Grow the PolioPlus Society: Establish or expand your PolioPlus Society to include at least 50 members
4 Expand the Paul Harris Society: Add at least 10 new donors to the Paul Harris Society and remind existing donors of their commitments.
5. Host Legacy Events: Organize a “legacy” or “Million Dollar” event to increase contributions to the Endowment
Club-Level Magic Markers
For Club leaders, the suggested actions include:
1. Set the Tone: Club presidents should lead by example, contributing to the Annual Fund by August 31st and to the Endowment by December 31st
2 Recruit New Rotary Direct Donors: Aim to add 5 new Rotary Direct donors
3 Expand the PolioPlus Society: Add 5 new members to the PolioPlus Society
4. Grow the Paul Harris Society: Add 5 new Paul Harris Society members and remind existing donors of their commitments.
The magic of these goals is that with small improvements District 7600 can substantially grow its contributions to the Rotary Foundation Harry Chapin's songs often remind me that our efforts in Rotary are part of a larger, ongoing cycle of service and improvement: "All my life's a circle; Sunrise and sundown."
These words reflect the rhythm of our service the continuous cycle of setting goals, working diligently, and achieving progress Each new Rotary year brings the sunrise of fresh opportunities and the sunset of achievements completed
"The seasons spinning 'round again; The
years keep rolling by."
As we move through this Rotary year, let us remember that our work is part of an ongoing journey-a journey of Joy Each year builds upon the last, and our cumulative efforts create lasting change This perspective helps us stay motivated and resilient, knowing that every small step contributes to the larger mission
As we begin this new Rotary year, let us embrace these Magic Markers, the spirit of Kaizen, and the wisdom of Harry Chapin. By committing to these incremental steps, we can collectively make a significant impact on our communities and the world Let us lead by example, inspire our fellow Rotarians, and work diligently towards our goals Together, we can increase our support for The Rotary Foundation, achieve our endowment targets, and continue to uphold the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self." Here’s to a year of growth, giving, and making a difference—one small step at a time.
"It seems like I've been here before; I can't remember when. But I have this funny feeling that we'll all be together again." Harry Chapin-All my life’s a circle

Rich Salon, aka Rich-The-HR-Guy from Rotary Club of Goochland here. I am excited to continue two roles within Rotary, plus take on a newly created one for this year:
Innovative Member Pathways Advocate for Zone 33, Pennsylvania thru South Carolina Innovative Club Advocate on the Zone 33 staff, focusing on District 7600 growth (NEW) District Membership Innovation Chair for District 7600
Although I will assume all three roles, did you happen to notice some similarities between them? Yes, each of them champions Membership and Innovation, which is mission-critical to our clubs being able to provide more community service Your club needs more members and many communities need more clubs Also, it is vital that we look at new and innovative ways to attract, engage, and retain our important club members
Please get ready to read and hear the term "Member Fulfillment" frequently The fulfillment level for each of our club members is a major component of "Rotary's secret sauce "
The question you are likely asking yourself right now is, "Does Rich-The-HR-Guy" need my help in suggesting or sharing innovative ideas as it relates to club membership?" The answer is "You bet I do " I need each of you, this will take a village, maybe two of them.
More to come regarding how you can help with Membership and Innovation
Rotary District 7600 Membership update
Using the MAP in DACdb to grow your club’s membership The Membership Action Plan is a tool designed by Rotarians for Rotarian Clubs to actively use in their planning and execution of membership recruiting, retention, and fulfillment.
Since 2015, Rotary International has officially designated membership growth as our top internal priority. We are a membership organization that delivers amazing service. However, declining membership remains our biggest problem to solve
We ask our clubs to take a multi-year approach to goal setting by asking current and future club leaders to work together to set goals and determine the correct path and strategies to meet those goals This approach promotes continuity of leadership, alignment of purpose, and unified messaging over multiple years.
Rotary Zones 33 & 34’s Membership Action Plan (MAP) assists clubs in this multi-year approach by providing monthly webinars and access to the Membership Success Center. The monthly webinars feature proven and practical strategies that have already been successful in other clubs The Membership Success Center provides almost real-time membership results coupled with historical membership data This allows clubs to understand their membership trajectory and to access resources to change that trajectory, if needed
Under the Direction of Tracy Lego, our District Membership Director, Chris Baca will serve as your Club’s resource for the Membership Action Plan, (MAP) Chris will communicate with your Club Presidents each month as the monthly MAP webinar nears so each president may invite their members to join them in the sessions. This will be a great opportunity to address your club, and should lead to dynamic planning and action within your club Chris is a member of Rotary Club of Fluvanna County, and one of many District 7600 members on our Membership team

Focus on Youth Resilience Skills
District 7600's Mental Health Task Force is launching into the new Rotary year with tremendous enthusiasm, thanks to the leadership of DG Joy Kline and our dedicated team! We are thrilled to announce that we have secured a grant from SentaraCares to kickstart a pilot program focused on youth resilience skill building and peer facilitation.
Our initiative aims to recruit sixteen high school students who will undergo training to enhance their resilience skills. These students will then have the opportunity to co-facilitate sessions alongside an adult mentor, ideally a caregiver. We are reaching out to our Rotary community for support in identifying suitable youth and adults (preferably caregivers) to participate in this transformative program
Given the anticipated demand, additional funding is crucial to ensure the success and sustainability of this initiative We invite you to contact Susanna Calvert at Susanna@HealingEdu org for any inquiries, referrals, or suggestions you may have
Together, we can make a significant impact in building resilience among our youth and fostering a supportive community environment. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in this important endeavor!

Celebrating Carol Woodward: A Pillar of Service and Dedication
In the spirit of Rotary's guiding principle, "Service Above Self," I take a moment to honor and express our deepest gratitude to Carol Woodward for her remarkable service to the District 7600 Foundation Committee (DRFC) for over a decade Carol's steadfast commitment, behind-the-scenes dedication, and unparalleled leadership have made a lasting impact on our District and the broader Rotary community.
Stephen Beer, a former Chair of the DRFC and currently an Assistant Regional Rotary Foundation Coordinator (ARRFC) noted that Carol evolved her role for the Foundation She volunteered for the critical tasks needed to run the DRFC “Carol’s roles grew over the years from communications, to planning the Foundation banquet to anchoring the District’s Paul Harris Society initiative. She was critical to the smooth operation of the DRFC during my term.”
Carol is often the person you don't see in the picture because she is always the one taking it Her role as the "go-to" for the team is a testament to her unwavering support and organizational prowess Chuck Arnason, who also served as a Chair of the DRFC, aptly describes Carol's invaluable contribution, stating, "Carol Woodward was my 'rock' during the three years that I served as District Rotary Foundation Chair. She was my confidant and sounding board but also a great Rotarian to work with "
Throughout her tenure, Carol has been instrumental in ensuring the smooth operation of the DRFC Her intelligence, knowledge of organizational functionality, and dedication to the Rotary Foundation's mission have set her apart as a leader. As Jim Probsdorfer recalls, "As we started to implement The Rotary Foundation’s Future Vision in 2013, it was obvious that we needed someone who understood how to ‘get things done’ Carol Woodward was the answer and she served as the DRFC Operations Chair "
Carol's ability to coordinate and manage various aspects of the DRFC, from development to grants, scholarships to advocates, and communications, has been nothing short of exemplary. Her efforts in arranging a first-ever multi-event contract with Colonial Heritage for district sessions have provided a consistent and convenient venue for our seminars and events, a legacy that continues to benefit us today Her dedication extends beyond her organizational role As a Paul Harris Society member and Major Donor, Carol has personally identified with Rotarians who believe deeply in the work of our Rotary Foundation. In celebrating Carol's extraordinary service, we also acknowledge the profound personal qualities that have endeared her to so many of us Chuck Arnason reflects on her impact, saying, "We inherited a solid committee structure from DRFC Jim Probsdorfer, and she saw to it that it was tweaked to better serve the District I valued her intelligence and knowledge of how organizations should function "
Carol Woodward exemplifies the essence of "Service Above Self." Her behind-the-scenes efforts, relentless dedication, and unwavering support have significantly contributed to the success and growth of the District 7600 Foundation I will miss Carol’s judgment, her passion for the Foundation, and her relentless desire to improve the DRFC and our community As we honor her service, we celebrate the remarkable individual who has always been there to capture the moments and ensure the smooth running of the DRFC.
Carol, your legacy of service, dedication, and leadership will continue to inspire us all. Thank you for being the rock, the confidant, and the extraordinary Rotarian who has made a difference in so many lives. You are truly the best!
