ANNIVERSARIES

Speaker @ Lunch 22 October Monique Maritz a PE girl, had her reality altered forever when she suffered a near–fatal motor car accident in 2006. Following many operations her left foot was amputated, leaving her wheelchair bound until she could manage on crutches. Pain and discomfort became her constant companions, and she became a target for verbal abuse when she parked in disabled parking bays. This became so bad that she went to do training at the traffic office College as a peace officer. She now has a book now which authorizes her to issue tickets for this abuse by the public! In order to fill the void that she experienced after her accident she figured out her passion which lead her to her purpose in life. She took a course in ceramic design at PE College and established Angels Wings ceramics in 2008, working from home.. After a big order from a shop in Jeffries Bay it became a thriving business, with her goods distributed to the Western Cape and Gauteng. She was nominated as SMME business runner up in 2015. Through all these experiences, Fabio, her service dog, was her constant companion. There are three types of working dogs, namely guide dogs for the blind, the hearing dog and the most recent initiative is the training of service dogs, which assist people with disabilities other than hearing and blindness. Service dogs are guaranteed access to all public buildings. However the challenge is to educate the public on these dogs. Recently they have established a centre at Greenacres and Bay West Mall - the focus being to train the security personnel on how to treat people with disabilities and their service dogs. When Monique goes overseas in April next year, Fabio will be in the cabin with her - free of charge!! The service dogs are special and have been trained to provide service on many different levels i.e. to open and close doors, to retrieve objects, switch lights on and off, alert the owner on medication needs, and to assist in the balance of the owner by assisting them to walk - which is what Monique needs - and to protect her, as she cannot run from danger. Most service dogs are Labradors, German shepherds or Golden Retrievers which were rescued from animal shelters. They undergo at least 70 hours of training. They also have a Therapy Dog Programme and assist at the oncology unit with patients.

Monique says we should not wait for the storm to pass, but dance in the rain! Her life took a paradigm shift and she now focuses on the things she can do and not on the things she cannot do - with Fabio always at her side!
