Club Assembly 15 October Rolf Meder and a team of 7 scholars from Germany are on their annual visit to Port Elizabeth. They do a lot of work at the Ithemba Special Day Care Centre, where our Rotary Club has been giving support too. Rolf told us that the German Government is currently giving money to projects which focus specifically on women, so they have been working on an old container to be used as a preschool, in order to assist the women who look after the children there. They put windows in the container and insulated it inside and out, and put a roof on to it. The handover of the project will take place on the 29th October 2015. The 2nd project is the support of a Women’s Choir. There will be a big event with the choir on the 31st October with keyboards, amplifiers and full media coverage. Rolf gave Denise a letter from his home club, and asked her to respond. She will ask if they can help us with money with which to buy sanitary pads for schoolgirls in poor and rural areas, which is one of the things that Thandi and her project team want to address. In our Club Assembly Chante Wright, the Club Administrator, said she is working on the next social, which will be early in November. Khumbulani Chikomo, our Treasurer, said things were mostly on track as far as fees being paid are concerned. Thanks to all our members for this. Linsley Pudney, our Attendance Officer, said our attendance during September had been 67.4%, but has dropped in October. He urged those who were not able to make our club meetings to do a makeup at another club, as ‘fellowship’ is one of Rotary’s main aims. Andrew Binning, as Public Relations Director, together with Jacco Wolters and Liezel Haarhoff, is working on our website and FaceBook page. As a Rotary Club we need to make known to the outside world what Rotary is all about, and increase our visibility and coverage. Our slots on Kingfisher FM have been well received by the public. We have also had good newspaper coverage regarding the LN-4 hand project, which brings Rotary’s name to all. Thandi Ndzombane, the Service Projects Director, together with her team of S’bongile Tsiu and Hlubi Hewitt-Coleman, are deciding on various projects. They are going to Dora Nginza hospital to see the area where parents take their children affected by Down’s syndrome, as much help is needed there. Jean Durandt spoke about the upcoming Uncle Jumbo’s project, and reminded us that our Rotaract club needs our help during this time. Bayanda Mbambisa gave us a quick overview of the Rotary Family Health Days. Julia Gooden, as Director of Membership, told us that she will be focussing on vocations missing in our club, so that we can find new members who would fit these classifications. Denise Pudney told us that unfortunately Karen Hermanus has had to be suspended from the Club due to conduct unbecoming to a Rotarian.
