Dear President Wong Hoon Sing and his Board of Directors, It is my pleasure to congratulate each of you for stepping up to con nue serving your esteemed Rotary Club of Sarikei in the coming Rotary year 2020-21.

I am confident you will have a busy and rewarding year. At every stage in our lives, Rotary has something for each of us. From the moment we became Rotarians, the work of Rotary service was open to us – and it became our obliga on to choose how best to serve.

Rotary has always been a place for visionaries, those who see how things could be and define a path toward making their dreams a reality. Our vision statement “Together, we see a world where people unite and take ac on to create las ng change – across the globe, in our communi es, and in ourselves” exemplifies this.

Our ac ons can make the difference between an unmet need and a hope fulfilled. By ac ng with integrity in our Rotary service, we exhibit a boun ful heart which underscores our commitment to making our world be er than before. New club presidents and new members alike may at mes grow discouraged when program par cipa on does not bring immediate results. Our investment in service may not appear frui ul at first and we may become overwhelmed by the number of service op ons. Take heart. Consider carefully what needs can be met, what Rotary program op on are available and how club and community resources can be combined. Taking one step at a me is o en the key ingredient to long-standing success.

I am proud to be a Rotarian. Proud to be connected to such a posi ve force for good in the world. Proud to be the President of the Rotary Club of Sarikei for the term 2020-2021 I have always wanted to help others. Connec ng with Rotary has enabled me to do just that. Think about it for a moment: We belong to a network of 1.2 million friends, neighbours, business associates and civic leaders who come together to create posi ve, las ng change in our communi es Rotary Opens Opportuni es, asks Rotarians to create opportuni es that strengthen their leadership, help put service ideas into ac on and improve the lives of those in need.

I would like to thank the members of Rotary Club of Sarikei for their confident and trust to appoint me as their president 2020-2021 and am very pleased to announce that we have carried out quite a few meaningful projects despite the ongoing Covid- 19 pandemic, namely: Together with other clubs in District 3310 we have already commi ed to donate 318 nos. of IOLs to those needy pa ents for 3 hospitals in Sarawak.

We have organised "A First Aider In Every Home" course for our club members.

We have distributed file holders and sta oneries to 101 final year kindy students at 7 Pre schools under our "Back To School " Project.

We have carried out 3 blood dona on drives at every 3 months interval with great response.

We have adopted four hardcore poor families and supply them with daily essen als every 3 months.

We have assisted in improving exis ng landscape to four primary schools by dona ng plan ng materials.

We have also donated personal protec ve equipments and medical items/apparatus to hospital and enforcement par es like the police and local authority to fight against Covid-19.

It is an honor to serve as president of the Rotary Club of Sarikei and I am privileged to have a board of experienced Past presidents and enthusias c Rotarians who are eager to serve and give back to the communi es.

Together we shall open up opportuni es to the world and engage in meaningful projects that will fill this world with love, care and hope.

Momoko Ling Siew Ping Outgoing President, 2019-20 Rotary Club of Sarikei

It has been my privilege to serve as President of the year 2019/2020. Although I just joined Rotary Club in the year 2017, I have so much to learn about Rotary Club. I am very thankful to CP Johnny Su and PP Robert Lau for guiding me through my Rotary journey.

I am proud with the projects that we carried out, namely Gi s of Sight, Health Screening, Charity Run, Blood Dona on and Back To School. Every project had special impact to the local community that we served.

Under Gi s of Sight project, we sponsored to provide free eyesight check up and free spectacles to rural students with poor sight problem. Under Health Screening project, we provided free health screening to the public at Central Market. We also conducted Blood Dona on for saving lives by supplying blood to Sarikei Hospital's blood bank. We were happy to give sta oneries to final kindergarten year students to several pre-schools.

The road had not been smooth for Charity Run. For the safety and health of our runners, we need to postpone the event due to haze that caused high API. Nevertheless, we successfully organized the event at a later date when the haze gone.

About 3 months before ending of my term as President, Covid-19 pandemic hit hard our country and government imposed movement control to fla en the curve of the virus infec ousness. Our community faced shortage of face mask and hand sani zer. We managed to distribute free face mask to the public at Central Market and to our frontliners.

To my dearest members, thank you for inves ng your precious me and contribu ng to give service to community under the Club. To our Interactors of SMK Meradong, thank you for joining Interact Club and don't forget to join Rotaract Club a er gradua ng from high school. Without of you, Rotary Club of Sarikei couldn't carry out the service projects.

ABOUT ROTARY WHAT IS ROTARY Rotary is the world's first service club organization. It was founded on 23rd Febuary 1905 by Paul P Harris, an attorney, in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A. Rotary is an association of local clubs gathered into a larger organtiztion called Rotary International. It is defined as an " organization of business and professional persons united world-wide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vacations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world". A Rotary Club is composed of business and professional persons in a Rotary community who have accepted the Ideal of Service as a basis for attaining fulfillment in their personal, vocational and community life. The individual Rotarian is a member of a local club while all clubs are members of Rotary International, which has its headquater in Evanston, Illinois, USA. Today, Rotary International consists of 34,823 Rotary Clubs in 200 countries and 34 geographical regions world-wide, organized info 538 Districts, with 1,207,102 members. These clubs are grouped in geographical districts for ease of administration.

Our district 3310 encompasses clubs in 3 countries- Malaysia ( Sabah, Sarawak, Johor, Melaka), Brunei and Singapore, With 62 clubs and 1800 members. In addition, RI also provides for setting up of Rotaract Clubs to provide opportunities for young adults of age 18 to 32 to serve in Rotary. Presently there are 180,964 members in 7,868 Rotaract Clubs Spread over 176 countries worldwide. RI has provision for secondary school students to know more about Rotary through the Interact Club, With 414, 115 members in 18,005 clubs established in 200 countries throughout the world. In addition, Rotary Clubs also sponsor non-rotarians who work to improve their communities through the Rotary Community Corps(RCC). Presently there are191, 889 members grouped into 8,343 RCC in 78 countries worldwide.

Rotary's motto is " Service Above Self". Rotary is People imbued with the spirit of 'Service Above Self' that leads to constuctive action and inculcates goodwill and fellowship.

The current Rotary emblem, created in 1923, was adopted at the 1929 Dallas Convention. The gearwheel with 24 cogs, 6 spokes and keyway, signifies that the wheel is a worker and not an idler. The emblem, worn as a lapel button, now identifies Rotarian around the world.

Rotary is thoughtfulness of others and helpfulness to others. Rotary is an ideal in action whereby thoughtfulness of others is basic in service and helpfulness to others is the expression of service.

Together they constitute the Rotary ideal of " Service Above Self".

Rotary programs of service are in accord with all humanity, irrespective of color, race or creed, and Rotary does not concern itself with politics. Rotary expects every member to be faithful to his belief,loyal in his citizenship and committed to the country in which he resides.

WHAT IS ROTARY Rotary is the experience of people of different cultures, different beliefs and different nationalities growing in fellowship wherever they may be. It is people discovering their responsibilities towards one another and finding themselves in purposeful action, action that hopefully will bring about peace in the world.

A BRIEF HISTORY The world's first service club, the Rotary Club of Chicage, Illinois, USA, was formed on 23rd Febuary 1905 by Paul P. Harris, an attorney who wished to recapture in a professional club the same friendly spirit he had felt in the small towns of his youth in Vermont. At that evening, Harris invited three friends to a meeting- Silvester Schiete ( coal dealer), Hiram Shorey (merchant tailor) and Gustavus Loehr (mining engineer)- in loeh's business office at Room 711 in Chicago.

They discussed Harris iea that business leaders should meet periodically to enjoy fellowship and to enlarge their circle of business and professional acquaintances. The club met weekly at different premises. The name "Rotary" is deliver from this early practice of rotating meetings among members' offices.

The early Rotarians realixed that fellowship is not enough and that they should reach out to improve the lives of the less fortunate around them by providing services as befit of their profession. Thus just 2 years after its charter, was born the world's first service organization.

Rotary's popularity spread throughout the United States in the decade that followed; clubs were chartered from San Francisco to New York. By 1921, Rotary clubs had been formed on six continents, and the organization adopted the name Rotary International a year later. As Rotary grew, its mission expanded beond serving the professional and social interests of club members. Rotarians began pooling their resources and contributing their talents to help serve communities in need. The organization's dedicarioon to this ideal is best expressed in its principal motto: Service Above Self. Rotary also later embraced a code of ethics, called The 4-Way Test, that has been translated into hundreds of languages.

During and after World War II, Rotarians became increasingly involved in promoting international understanding.

In 1945, 49 Rotary members served in 29 delegtions to the United Nations Charter Conference. Rotary still actively participates in UN conferences by sending observers to major meetings and promoting the United Nations in Rotary publications. Rotary International's relationship with the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) dates back to a 1943 London Rotary conference that promoted international cultural and educational exchanges.

Attended by ministers of education and observers from around the world, and chaired by a past president of RI, the conference was an impetus to the establishment of UNESCO in 1946.

ABOUT ROTARY

A BRIEF HISTORY An endowment fund, set up by Rotarians in 1917 "for doing good in the world," became a not-for-profit corporation known The Rotary Foundation in 1928. Upon the death of Paul Harris in 1947, an outpouring of Rotarian donations made in his honor, totaling US$2 million, launched the Foundation's first program-graduate fellowship, later to be known as Ambassadorial Scholarships.

Today, contrubutions to The Rotary Foundation total more than US$80 million annually and support a wide range of humanitarian grants and eductional programs that enable Rotarians to bring hope and promote international understanding throughout the world.

In 1985, Rotary made historic commitment to immunize all of the world's children against polio. Working in partnership with nongovermental organizations and national goverments through its Polioplus program, Rotary is the largest private-sector contributor to the global polio eradication campaign. Rotarians have mobilized hundreds of thousands of PolioPlus volunteers and have immunized more than one billion children worldwide. By the 2005 target date for certification of a polio-free world, Rotary had contributed US$500 million to the cause.

In this 2nd century of service, Rotary worked to meet the changing needs of society, expanding its service effort to address such pressing issues a environmental degradation, illiteracy, world hunger, and children at risk. The organization admitted women for the first time(worldwide) in 1989 and claims more than 12% of the membership today. Following the collapse of the Berlin Wall and the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Rotary clubs were formed or re-established throughout Central and Eastern Europe.

Today, there are more than 1.2 million Rotarians in some 34,823 Rotary clubs across 200 throughout the world.

Rotary International is organized at three operational levels viz, clubs, district and international. A Rotary Club is an organization of business leaders within a defines community. Its purpose is fellowship and service. It has a President and Board of Directors.

These are elected and they hold office for one year. Each club agrees to conform to the spirit of the provision of the "Standard Rotary Club Constitution". It develops its own plans and projects around the five Avenues of Service that best meet the needs of its community.

A Rotary District is a geographical territory in which Rotary Clubs associated for Rotary International administrative purposes.

Each district is headed by a District Govenor who is an officer of the Rotary International, and whose job is to assist clubs in the district. District Governors are nominated by their districts and elected for a one year term at the Rotary International Convention.

ABOUT ROTARY

HOW IS ROTARY ORGANIZED Rotary International is an association of Rotary Clubs throughout the world. It is administered by a board of directors consistting of the President and President-Elect of Rotary International, and 16 other directors from around the world. They are elected for a term of two years and meets quarterly to establish policies. Rotary International Secretariat, located at Evanston, has an international staff of more than 500. The general secretary is the chief executive officer of Rotary International. There are nine branch offices around the world - Sydney, Australia; Sao Paulo, Brazil; New Delhi, India; Tokyo, Japan; Stockholm, Sweden; Buenos Aires, Argentina; Seoul, South Korea; and Manila, Philipines.

Rotary International has not attenmpted to create a single Rotary International corporate image. This is one of Rotary's strenghts as it permits harmony among clubs and Rotarians of different nations and cultures.

THE FIVE AVENUES OF SERVICE IN ROTARY Based on the Object of Rotary, the Five Avenues of Service are Rotary's philosophical cornerstone and the foundation on which club activity is based:

Club Service Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the smooth functioning of Rotary clubs. Membership and Training are emphasized in this avenue.

Vocational Service Vocational Service involves club members serving others through their professions and aspiring to high ethical standards.

Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vacations, and they inspire others in the process.

Community Service Community Service is the opportunity Rotary clubs have to implement club projects and activities that improve life in the local community.

International Service International Service encompasses efforts to expand Rotary's humanitarian reach around the world and to promote world understanding and peace. It includes everything from contributing to PolioPlus to helping Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries.

New Generations Service New Generations Service recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults through leadership development activities such as RYLA, creating international understanding with Rotary Youth Exchange.

ROTARIAN CODE OF CONDUCT The following code of conduct has been adopted for the use of Rotarians:

AS A ROTARIAN, I WILL 1) Act with Integrity and high ethical standards in my personal and professional life 2) Deal fairly with others and treat them and their occupations with respect 3) Use my professional skills through Rotary to: mentor young people, help those with special needs and improve people's quality of life in my community and in the world 4) Avoid behavior that reflects adversely on Rotary or other Rotarians THE ROTARY INTERNATIONAL EMBLEM Rotary's early emblem was a simple wagon wheel(in motion with dust).

It was designed in 1905 by Montague M. Bear, a member of the Rotary represent both civilization and movement. Most of the early Rotary clubs adopted the wheel in one form or another.

In 1922, the organization decided to create and preserve an emblem for the exclusive use of all Rotarians, and the following year, the present emblem, a gearwheel with 24 cogs and siz spokes, was adopted. A keyway was added to signify the usefulness of the gearwheel.

ABOUT ROTARY

GUIDING PRINCIPLES These principles have been developed over the years to provide Rotarians with a strong, common purpose and direction.

They serve as a foundation for our relationships with each other and the action we take in the world.

Object of Rotary The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service; High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society; The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Four-Way Test The Four-Way Test is a nonpartisan and nonsectarian ethical guide for Rotarians to use for their personal and professional relationships. The test has been translated into more than 100 languages, and Rotarians recite it at club meetings: Of the things we think, say or do Is it the TRUTH? Is it FAIR to all concerned?

Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS? Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Avenues of Service We channel our commitment to service at home and abroad through five Avenues of Service, which are the foundation of club activity.

Club Service focuses on making clubs strong. A thriving club is anchored by strong relationships and an active membership development plan.

A total of 350 pre-school and kindergartens pupils in the district benefi ed from Sarikei Rotary Club’s ‘Back To School’ project recently.

Pupils from SJK Siung Hua, SJK Su Lee, SJK Su Lok, SJK Su Kwong, SJK Sze Lu, SJK Chung Hien, SJK St Mar n, SJK Kiew Mang,SJK Wah Man, SJK Kwang Chien, Methodist Anglo Chinese Kindergarten and Methodist Nyelong Park Kindergarten received a school bag each.

Organising chairman, Robert Lau Sie Yong said that the main objec ve was to help lighten the burden of less fortunate parents whose children are star ng primary educa on next year.

The money for the project was raised during ‘Sarikei Charity Run’ with a contribu on from Repok Assemblyman Dato Sri Huang Tiong Sii. The organising commi ee included the club’s president Momoko Ling Siew Ping

Event organised by Rotary Club Sarikei & Pejabat Residen Sarikei on 02 February 2020 Twenty-eight pints of blood were collected during a mass blood dona on drive jointly organised by Rotary Club of Sarikei, Public Medicare Group (PMG), LSY Medicare (E.M) Sdn Bhd, and Sarikei Division Sarawak Government Service Welfare Council (Maksak) in collabora on with Sarikei Hospital blood bank yesterday.

Rotary Club Sarikei president Momoko Ling the organising chairperson, thanked all the donors for their noble deeds.

Encouraged by the overwhelming response, they hoped to hold similar programme in May, she said.

Each donor was given a tray of fresh eggs courtesy of LSY Medicare, and 15 sachets of Tiger Milk Coffee from PMG. Proprietor of LSY Medicare Robert Lau; PMG director Ling Hung Leong, Maksak Sarikei secretary Mohammad Firdaus Habari and head of Sarikei Blood Bank Dr Chris Wong were among those present.
