Presidential Message JULY 2021 I wish each of you and your families a great Rotary New Year! Together, let us make it the best year of our lives, by making it a year to grow more and do more. Let this be a year of changemakers, and let us begin with our membership.

That is precisely why the Each One, Bring One initiative is so important. During this year, I urge you to dream of new ways in which Rotary can expand its reach into your community and therefore the world. If each member introduces one person to Rotary, our membership can increase to 1.3 million by July 2022. So, let’s just do it!

Imagine the change we, as Rotary members, can make when there are so many more of us! More people to care for others, more people to Serve to Change Lives, more members will enable us to embark on bigger and bolder service projects.

And each of us can also continue to serve in our own personal ways, responding to needs in our communities.

One element that we can incorporate into all of our service initiatives is empowering girls. Unfortunately, even in this day and age, girls and young women face disproportionate challenges all over the world. Empowering girls and young women to have greater access to education, better health care, more employment, and equality in all walks of life should be embedded in every Rotary project we launch. Girls are future leaders, so we must ensure that we help them change their future.

These are challenging times, and I compliment each of your efforts in grappling with COVID-19. No challenge is too big for Rotarians. The bigger the challenge, the more passionate the Rotarian. Look at what we can do when we take on a colossal challenge such as eradicating polio. Look at the millions of lives we improve by strengthening access to water, sanitation, and hygiene. Look at what we do every year to promote peace in places where it seems unimaginable. Our basic education and literacy programs have nation-building impact.

This year, let us challenge ourselves to do more such projects and programs that have national reach and impact. This year, let us Serve to Change Lives.

Today we are gathered here at Haciendas de Naga to personally welcome our beloved DG Angie Sunio with PDG Dennis Sunio, on her first ever Governor’s Visit, and to witness our Club Induction. This is such a momentous event on the term of every President, Secretary, club officers and the entire club members! We will also be presenting to DG Angie Sunio our club’s plan of activities for the entire Rotary year 20212022 and our commitment in helping her realize the district’s thrust & goals that was presented to us during our PESECTS. Last July 4, 2021, we have successfully conducted our Kick Off project for the Rotary Year 2021-2022 under the theme “Serve to Change Lives” by doing three (3) simultaneous activities, namely, 1.)

Tree Planting at two locations (Haciendas de Naga & Magtuto Farm); 2.) Gifts Giving; a.) Distribution of School Supplies, b.) Tsinelas for the Orphans, c.)

Distribution of Hygiene Kits; and 3.)

Medical Check Up at Queen of Peace Children’s Home & Formation Center in Pacol, Naga City. It was one of those moments when our hearts are so moved and touched as we share our time and resources to 24 orphans. Certainly, our generosity left a mark in their hearts and made a difference in the most critical formatives years of their lives.

Corollary to our two (2) Areas of Focus, namely; Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Resolution and Disease Prevention and Treatment, we have invited Capt. Moreno R. Vigilia, PA, Commanding Officer of 91th Civil Military Operations (DIPLOMATS) Company to receive the following items: a.) 100 pails; b.) 100 bottles of Alcohol, c.) 100 pcs. face shield and d.) 5 boxes of face mask, which will be distributed to the participants during the Peace Building Activity/ De-Radicalization Seminar on July 2128, 2021 at Shell Training Farm-Bombon, Camarines Sur. In connection with this, we would like to thank our Sponsors IPP Jojo Dy Prieto, PES Melody Dy Prieto and PP Ryan Bastareche for sharing their resources in supporting the aforementioned areas of focus.

On behalf of our club, we would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to our District Governor Angelita “Angie” Sunio and PDG Dennis Sunio for devoting the next two weeks of their time travelling and visiting the entire Rotary clubs within area 4-Bicol despite the threat of Covid19 virus. Gov. Angie, I hope that your visit with our club will continue to inspire and re enkindle our members’ commitment to our motto “Service Above Self”. Serving others is more than just an act, it is about empowering people and changing not only the lives of the recipients but the lives of the giver as well. Rest assured of my unwavering commitment and dedication to serve you, and the Rotary Club of Naga way beyond my term.

Meet Rotary’s New President Our new president, Shekhar Mehta, envisions Rotary’s next chapter – and is ready to make it a reality

Over the years, I caught glimpses of Shekhar Mehta when he came to One Rotary Center in Evanston, Illinois, for Board of Directors meetings. I met him formally during one of the days of back-to-back meetings with various staff members that every incoming Rotary president participates in. During the session I attended, he was the most relaxed person in the room, despite being the only one suffering from jet lag. He was alert, patient, and asked perceptive questions — not surprising for someone as successful as he is in his professional and philanthropic life.

I kept thinking that he was assessing each of us to see how we could be recruited to help him achieve his dreams for Rotary.

I was lucky to have met Shekhar in person back when we could meet in person.

We are now well into the second year of the global COVID-19 pandemic, and as I write this, India is in the depths of a tragic outbreak. Rotary has had to make adjustments, but the business of Rotary goes on.

In a normal year, one of the Rotary editors would have traveled to Kolkata, where Shekhar lives with his wife, Rashi. We would have spent time with him, his family members, and his friends and fellow Rotarians, exploring how his upbringing and adulthood in India have shaped his perspective on life and on Rotary. This year, of course, no one was able to travel — so instead, we asked the people who know Shekhar best to tell us about him in their own words.

In the following pages, members of Shekhar’s family, some of his oldest friends, his personal assistant, and his presidential aide share anecdotes and talk about the man they know, in order to help Rotary members everywhere feel that they know him, too. Many of you will, of course, meet him yourselves — virtually, if not in person — over the course of the coming year.

Shekhar Mehta, a member of the Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar, has been a Rotarian since 1985. He trained as an accountant and founded a real estate development company, Skyline Group, which he also chairs. But his professional title tells only a small part of the story of who he is. He is also a director of the India arm of Operation Eyesight Universal, a Canada-based nonprofit focused on preventing avoidable blindness. He helped establish more than 15 eye hospitals, in several Indian states, that together carry out nearly 50,000 surgeries each year.

And he started Saving Little Hearts, a project that has facilitated more than 2,500 heart surgeries for children from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and some African countries and that is now an India-wide program.

As you’ll read in these pages, he also has been actively involved in disaster relief work. Among other undertakings, he helped build 500 homes in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.

At the International Assembly this year, Shekhar talked about how he and some fellow Rotarians decided to start a local version of ShelterBox, a Rotarian-founded organization based in the UK. “We named it Shelter Kit and put 52 items of daily need in a large trunk,” he told the incoming district governors. “Over the last 15 years, in every major disaster in India, Indian Rotarians have volunteered to bring Shelter Kits to areas struck by disasters.” The program already has served about 75,000 people. Shekhar also served on the ShelterBox board of trustees.

And he is also the architect of the TEACH program, which aims to do nothing less than end illiteracy in India. (You’ll read more about this ambitious program in a future issue.)

Although Shekhar is skilled in the business arts, he prefers to engage his other fluencies. He told me that, after so much studying and reading during his career, he now favors learning by talking to people. He added, “I hate accounting.” It all follows his belief that we would do well to think from our hearts as much as our minds.

As part of the TEACH program to increase literacy rates in India, Mehta often visits schools that are part of the program, which are known as “Happy Schools.” Rotary members in India have transformed more than 3,000 schools into Happy Schools. The Rotary Club of Calcutta-Mahanagar supports this girls’ school in Kolkata, Bhowanipur Arya Vidya Mandir, with a daily break-fast for more than 1,000 students.

MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT 3820 GOVERNOR, R.Y 2021-22 Gov. Angelita “Angie” Sunio My dear Amazing Life-Changing Presidents, District and Club Officers, Fellow Rotarians, Rotaractors, and friends.

First of all, I am thankful to our dear God, the giver of life for giving me the opportunity to lead as District Governor of our charming District 3820.

I am also grateful to my family especially to my dearest husband Dennis, for his unconditional support and the sleepless nights he shared with me in this early part of this journey. To our two children, Kris and C, for their effusive love and unparalleled kindness, and their constant encouragement and for their prayers for my well-being and success.

My gratitude to the DGND Selection Committee led by PDG Pete Tenorio for affirming the vote of the district and lastly, to Rotary International for again affirming the same result of the Ballot by mail in the DGND selection process two years ago. Thank you so much.

I am humbled and honored by the trust and confidence you have bestowed upon my person. And to borrow the words of tennis number one male player in the world today, Novak Djokovic, and I quote, “it really excites me to walk the path of giant and legendary leaders [of District 3820].

To know that I have earned my place among them is a beautiful confirmation that when you do things out of love and passion, everything is possible.

I am also hopeful that after my term ends in 2022, you will judge me favorably so that I may stand shoulder to shoulder with all the illustrious Past District Governors, and able to raise my head high up, confiedent that I have done my part as District Governor in the best way I can.

My Rotary journey started when I joined the Rotary Club of Pagsajan in December 2001 and became its club President six months later in Huly 2002.

Little did I know that when I accepted the club presidency for that year that I would be staying as a Rotarian for the next twenty years. I assumed different leadership roles and participated in different projects as a member or Chair, but in a quite role as my personality prefers a low-key and peaceful solitude.

I am also thankful to the Rotary Club of Pagsanjan and all our members, who have been supportive of me always throughout the years, namely, PP Benny Copok, PP Boy Ng Cha, PP Pinggoy Lagumbay, PP Neriza Garcia, PP Shirley Zaguirre, PP Bernard Surbano, PP Lubic Jacob and Rtn. Iris, PP Ambiel Panganiban, PP Aldea Roguel, and our leaders who have passed on to eternal life, our Charter President the historian Gregorio Zaide, who I never met but without him RC Pagsanjan may not have been chartered at all, the late PP Jamin Enverga, PP Leo Collantes and PP Rene Garcias and the younger ROTARIANS, the vibrant team, TP Sally Urbina, Lifechanging Pres.

Blossom Panganiban, PE Lerma Elca Marcelo, District Treasurer Jenelyn Cambel, Sec. Reyn Romposon, PP Benson del Valle, Rtn. Eryl Agus, Rtn. Andie Cullano, Rtn. Bhanie Razon, and Rtn. Edwin Pangilinan. Maraming maraming Salamat po sa inyong lahat.

I am here before you in this Virtual Assembly of leaders, aware of my deficiencies and imperfections as a human being, but proud that having been created in God’s image, I seek perfection in service and in fellowship.

These responsibilities and obligations are the yoke I will carry for the love of Rotary.

I am hopeful that with strong support of all the clubs of District 3820 and the personal commitment to the ideal of service of individual Rotarians, on whom I have great faith, we shall together take this fateful yet impactful journey, however difficult this may be. Despite the limitations and restrictions that have been imposed upon us by this scary, dark and crushing pandemic, we shall move forward, hand in hand, side by side to bring our services to our distant communities – many of whom are forgotten – and to brave the stormy seas, all in the name of service. Oftentimes, we shall meet resistance and even failure, but the surest thing we can always do, is rise up another day and thank the good Lord for another opportunity to serve. In the end, our persistence and our resilience will prevail.

My journey as Rotary District Givernor is about to start very soon, and it is far from over. That heavy responsibility of leading this District is a challenge I am taking personally and with God’s grace and the guidance of the Holy Spirit, I am confident that with all the Rotarians of our District beside, in front and behind me, especially the Amazing Lifechanging Presidents, all of whom are aware of our SHARED responsibility.

And to apply what an unknown author wrote and I quote, “at the end of life, what really matters is not what we bought but what we built; Not what we got but what we shared; not our competence but our character; and not our success, but our SIGNIFICANCE. Live a life that matters. Live a life of LOVE.” Yes, our LOVE FOR HUMANITY must the basis of our day-to-day life as Rotarians and by so doing, we can hope in the foreseeable future, for a more equitable society where the strong raises the quality of life of the weak and the downtrodden, while the wise and the educated guide the poor and the illiterate, opening for them opportunities for their personal and communal development. Opo tayong lahat ay may obligasyon para sa mga nakakaraming mga dukkha at kapus-palad na dahil sa pandemya ang kanilang kabuhayan ay Nawala o naudlot. Tama po kayo, “Ang mga taong nasa laylayan ay ating tutulungang umangat ang kabuhayan. Ang lahat na ating gagawin ay ayon sa ating alituntuning manilbihan ng higit pa sa ating sarili, Rotary’s motto: Service Above Self. Again, we are here to “SERVE TO CHANGE LIVES”.

What we need now is a change in the hearts of Rotarians that will guide us to accomplish more good in this world. As Helen Keller said, “TOGETHER, WE CAN DO SO MUCH, ALONE WE CAN DO SO LITTLE.” My dear Amazing Life-changing Presidents and District Officers, and the Clubs you represent, take note that we are at the crossroad of peace, unity, and service on one side and on the other side is dysfunction and chaos.

Your pledge of commitment still echoes in my ears for you have chosen to serve and change lives. Be the best that you can be. Stand up and be counted.
