T

ime has a way of slipping by especially when you are having fun. It is unbelievable that the second quarter of our Rotary year 2021- 2022 is here with us, what an amazing finish of Q1 . We took the baton and started off with a sprint and can now look back in awe at the activities of the last 3 months. The great speakers put together by our admin Director Jackie Njeru spiced up our fellowships, we could not have asked for anything else- Kudos to you Jackie, you gave us the best. I am always intrigued and amazed at how you put together such great and relevant speakers for our fellowships.

The famous quote, and allow me to paraphrase the quote “Our intention is to succeed this Rotary year and hence did

not plan to fail by not having a plan for the year, but planned with success in. Under the leadership of PE Jackie Musyoka the great team which included our own Rtn Rose Fina Baraza, put together a realistic and workable plan inspired by all the Directors.

Thanks to all directors and PE Jackie, for putting together our road map for the year.

The quarter was abuzz with activities, which makes it difficult to single out the showstopper for the quarter. Was it the launch of the monthly RCM magazine The Mountain Top, The great and wellcoordinated mentorship programme from the scholarship docket, the book launch and distribution, The Chatter of Masai Mara club, , The membership month, the trivias

and having experienced Rotarian on the spotlight sharing their Rotary journey culminating in the induction of the 2 new members Rtn Getrude Gichuru and Rtn Irene Kalunde, the recognition of yet another major Donor in our club PP Gichu Wahome also declared as the best Rotary MC in town., the quiz night that left many of us scratching our heads but welcoming our own Annette Wanjala as one of the winners , The Award of the $74,731 global grant for the Ngoswani Hospital in Narok, the Rotaract club of Oshwal college in-formation, or the Family of Rotary docket that has held us together as a family- bringing the humane face to the club at times of bereavements? Our tree champion Rtn Edwin Agasa did not want to be left behind and worked hard to secure over 5000 seedlings through the partnership of RC Nairobi Utimishi, Caritas and Equity Bank. As a club fun, fellowship and partnership is in our DNA as seen by the droves of RCM members that attend the Rotary club of Hurlingham installation ceremony of President Veronica and her Board or the excellent services by our members at the district level :- Rotarians I leave it to you to cast your vote for the showstopper At the beginning of the quarter, our scholarship Director Rtn Maria Redmond was eager to have all the 30 students under our scholarship program start the academic year with bang. This saw her organise a great mentorship program (REMS- now baptised Rotary Club of Milimani Education and Membership programs) held on the 24 July 2021 at ST Catherine’s primary school in Mukuru that left the students energised, mentally and socially prepared to face the term and ready to excel. The feedback from the parents and students conveyed via the numerous telephone calls, and letters from the students confirms that we as Rotarians are making a difference in the lives of these children. Rtn Maria has brought in her managerial skills of several years and taken the programme to a new level. She however had no choice

having taken over the docket from Rtn Anne Asiemo who lived and dreamed of Scholarship, we salute you both.

Rtn Dr Ben Obura, took the partnership to a new level . He engineered and delivered the donation of 1,406 books valued at Kes 2.2M from The Kenya Literature bureau. A breathtaking donation, which has seen Rotary club of Milimani partner with over 80 Rotary clubs and reaching more than 100 schools, and placing RCM on the map of Kenya and at the district for our dedication to the Rotary cause- The books were flagged off the 24th of August 2021 at a ceremony , which started with the tour of the KLB complex , a first amongst equals , followed by entertainment from the KBL choir and ended with the flag off by our AG Nicholas Kamere together with the senior management team from Literature Bureau . Hats off for Rtn Ben – you deserve the Rotary spirit award of excellence , this is service above self.

Special appreciation to PP Iqbal for according us the space to keep the book and Rtn Rose baraza and the Children from beyond the Vision school for sorting, recording and re-packaging of the books ready for distribution. PE Jackie jumped in to save the day and took over the mandate of coordination and collection of the books- A job well done to you all. Before the dust could settle from the lorry flanged off on the 24th of August, 28th August 5am , PP Ozem Murikui and team were off to Narok for book distribution and tree planting at Kisisri Primary school in Narok, and like a rush, armed will all the instruments of power , he crossed from Kisiriri to Maasai Mara to a hero's welcome to chatter the Rotary club of Maasai Mara . The Chatter ceremony saw members travel from as far as Homabay and Kiisi to witness this one in a lifetime activity for any Rotary club.

The announcement of the award of the global grant on the 24th August of $74,731 was received with pomp and colour. The grant is to be used for the installation of rainwater harvesting system with a capacity of six hundred thousand liters underground reinforced concrete water tank and an out-patient outdoor toilets and hand washing facilities in partnership with Rotary club of South Haven, the primary contact for this grant is our able Treasurer Rtn Joshua Okeyo.

The month of August had to end in style with a thank you message from the Rotary international , recognising our Own PP Gichu Wahome for empowering Rotary clubs to take action, to create a positive change in the communities at home and around the

world. PP Gichu we honour you.

Membership month, kicked in in August and our Director for Membership Rtn Doris Odera did not disappoint and lined up several activities, introducing the Trivia, a great way to get to know each other and the spotlight sessions , for members to know more about Rotary as we listened to PP Catherine Mugambi and PP Lawrence Gikaru share their Journey in Rotary, What an awesome moment After two exciting months, the Month of September came up with the birth of the Rotaract Club of Oshwal. The young generation Director Rtn Penina Njange, ensured that the 15th of September was “The day” for unveiling of the Rotactor club of Oshwal in-formation. The elaborate planning saw the Dean of academic affairs , RCM members and officials of Rotaract club of Oshwal join in fellowship.

Madame President was in the limelight to explain Rotary objects, ways, practices and activities- Rtn Rose Fina shared her Rotary and as usual stole the show with her quiz and reward session. Thumbs up to. PE Jackie for coordination the event with the RTN Penina.

Having been nominated as our trees Ambassador, Rtn Edwin Agasa In his usual characteristic did not waste time and within 2 weeks in office , secured 5000 siblings for the club and mobilised members to take up the seedling. We are now ready and willing to plant the trees- Kazi kwako Rtm. Saving the best for last- The PR team. As we enjoy reading the Mountain Top and celebrating our social media pages, we must congratulate the team that is making this possible. Our Director PR director Rtn George Kigo , has a brilliant team that supports delivery of the outputs. In his own words, says that the roles are shared out almost equally. Appreciating the creative mind of Rtn Yeddah,, Rtn Rose FinaHelps put the content together, while Rtn Harriet M coordinates the design and due to her mastery of the queen's language assist with grammar. Rtn Daisy- and Rtn Rose Fina write many of the articles and also manage the social media accounts and like a true African man he sits back and enjoys the praise.

Well-done team’ Let us keep the flame burning, and RCM flag up.

appy October Family of Rotary!

We begin this month straight off an eventful month of September that saw the RI President Shekhar Mehta and his wife Rashi, visit our District for 6 days; split between Ethiopia and Kenya. During his visit, we were able to have high-profile meetings with the heads of states in the two countries that have resulted in new partnerships with the governments that will serve to change lives and significantly increase the impact of our community service.

After our meeting with H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenya’s government pledged to donate 1.5 million trees to our 10million tree challenge this year under our environment focus area. On matters health, the government will provide us 4

with the infrastructure to set up a blood bank that will save the lives of many as well establish 10 eye hospitals to cater for cataract operations. This is in addition to our planned heart surgeries for children initiative that hopes to enable hundreds of young children receive corrective treatment in India and will also entail Medical Missions visits by heart specialists from India, who will in turn train local doctors to handle similar surgeries in future.

In literacy and education, Rotary Clubs in the District will implement the Safe Return to Schools and Loving Classrooms Initiative aimed at promoting social cohesion and positive relationships among communities, starting with children in primary and secondary schools. Rotary will also promote the uptake of science, technology, engineering,

In Ethiopia, we held meetings with both President H.E Sahlework Zewde at the Presidential palace and Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen at the Ministry of Foreign affairs. During the discussions, both President Sahlework and Deputy Prime Minister Demeke said it was in the interest of the Ethiopian government to support Rotary as we worked along the Ethiopian government’s priority areas.

The government also pledged to support the organization of the 4th All African Zone 22 Institute to be held in Addis Ababa next year.

October is Rotary’s Economic Community Development Month and a wonderful time of year to reflect on our role in financially empowering the underprivileged.

Unemployment, lack of economic opportunity, lack of appropriate training, and the absence of social safety have caused a poverty rate of almost 40% in Africa which fortunately can be reversed by sustainable interventions.

As Rotarians, we continue to take up the call to serve by creating sustainable productive employment opportunities especially for women, people with disabilities, youth, and the extremely poor. One of the ways we are doing this is by embracing the Adopt a Village initiative that empowers a specific community to become self-sufficient over a well-defined period of time.

Get your club involved and make a difference in community development.

This month we also concentrate on another Rotary focus area; Disease prevention and treatment by shining a light on 3 major areas;

October is dear to Rotarians as it is the month that we commemorate World Polio Day on the 24th of October. After 30 years of fighting, we’re closer than ever to eradicating polio but we’re not done yet. We still need funds to continue immunizations and surveillance efforts. I call on every member to apportion their Rotary Foundation donation to the End Polio initiative.

We can also participate in the World Polio day celebration by coming up with activities that creating awareness for this cause.

Secondly, October is also the month that we spread awareness on the importance of handwashing as we celebrate Global Handwashing Day on 15th October 2021. Let us all play our part in sensitizing our schools and community on this simple way to fight disease by providing training, soap, and hand wash stations on the day.

Awareness month. The District has lined up a series of events this month to promote cancer awareness. We will be walking and planting trees in memory of fallen cancer heroes on the 16th as well as having a men’s only sensitization cancer webinar on the 22nd, with more cancer activities slotted over the coming months. Look out for details on how you can participate.

Over the last couple of weeks, I have had the pleasure to visit over 50 Rotary clubs on my official visits where I have met many of you and been warmly received. I have been overwhelmed by the expanse of passion that Rotarians demonstrate in their willingness to serve diligently. I am glad to see the enthusiasm on call to action of ONE LOVE during these visits. I have managed to physically visit the Ethiopia and Coast Regions where I was further amazed by the impact we are making in spreading goodwill. As I look forward to meeting all Rotarians in the District, I am happy with the sense of family that is focused on our goal; FUN IN SERVICE. ONE LOVE

Spreading the Rotary Wings with Rotaract Club of Oshwal College in Formation

The formation of Rotaract Clubs is an item on the 2021-2022 Rotary International Presidential Citation that outlines the need to have young adults to focus on developing their communities and workplaces.

S

eptember 15th 2021 marked the first meeting held at Oshwal College where Rotary Club of Milimani members came together to champion the new formation.

Rotaract originally began as a Rotary International youth program in the United States from 1968, and has grown into a major organization of over 10,904 clubs spread around the world and over 203,000 members in 189 countries. It is a service, leadership, professional and community service organization (often miscommunicated as a Social Service Club) for young men and women aged 18 and over.

emphasized that the Rotaract Club of Oshwal together with support from members in the Milimani club, will also take part in international service projects in a global effort to bring Peace and Conflict Prevention / Resolution, uplift Disease Prevention and Treatment, support Water and Sanitation, advance Maternal and Child Health, nurture Basic Education and Literacy and elevate Economic and Community Development.

To be eligible for membership, prospective members must be 18 years of age and over, show that they are committed to Rotaract, and show that they are of good standing in the community.

After being approved by the club, prospective members are 'inducted' to become members, also known as 'Rotaractors'.

"Rotaract" stands for "Rotary in Action'', although the name originally comes from a combination of "Rotary" and "Interact" (International + Action), with a majority of activities taking place at the club level. Representing Rotaract Milimani chartered on 14th April, 1997, Peninah Njakwe, New Generations Director, highlighted the positive impact from projects and skills she learnt since becoming a member of this organization. Rotaract clubs hold formal meetings in person or virtually, usually every two weeks, which feature speakers, special outings, social activities, discussions or visits to other clubs. Club members get together

Associating it to Oswal College's future mandate, Mr Kamau, Dean of Students and Student President Hussein Janowalla were in agreement that this initiative will drive the centre of excellence in nurturing leaders responsive to the needs of the global society.

WORLD ARTHRITIS DAY (WAD) October 12th

World arthritis day is a global awareness day held on October 12th every year to raise awareness in global audiences of the presence and impact of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases (RMD).

O

ver 200 RMD’S are known and may remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed in an individual. Quality of life is impacted in individuals affected by RMD’s hence making it difficult to fully participate in gainful employment or undertake and enjoy routine physical activities as individuals and members of a family. Lack of gainful employment will impact selfesteem and increase dependency.

Health professionals in rheumatology are few and medical education is inadequate in RMD’S due to insufficient exposure in medical training, consequently diagnosis and management are often delayed or inadequate.

Research into RMD’S has made great strides in resent decades. Many of these strides are however little known outside the field of rheumatology.

The situation in Africa is compounded by a lack of resources to train sufficient specialists and fund research.

To commemorate World Arthritis Day we focus on Gout in this edition of “The

Mountain Top” What is Gout?

Gout is a painful form of arthritis and occurs when a substance known as uric acid builds up in the body. This buildup can lead to deposits of uric acid in the joints especially the bid toe, skin and kidneys amongst other tissues.

The large toe is often the site of first attack but this event can occur in any joint.

The joint often wakes the patient up at night and may feel as though it is on fire.

It feels stiff, warm and is swollen. Gout attacks may be brought on by many factors including alcohol and stress amongst others. These initial attacks my resolve spontaneously over several days and may not even recur for months to years.

Uric acid occurs as a consequence of breakdown of purines substances found in certain foods such as liver, anchovies and dried beans. Normally the uric acid, which is dissolved in the blood, is filtered from the body through the kidney. A buildup can however occur when a person either eats too much purine containing food or if the kidney is unable to adequately remove the uric acid excess.

Who is likely to get gout?

One is more likely to get gout if the following apply: • There is a family history of the

illness One is overweight Male individual. Note that females may also get gout but this is more common in the post-menopausal period.

Drinking alcohol. This does not have to be excess alcohol.

Eating excess purines.

A history of an organ transplant Certain kinds of medication.

How is gout diagnosed?

Gout may be diagnosed from the history and physical examination. Sometimes a doctor may obtain a sample of fluid from the painful toe by pricking and aspirating the fluid which is then analyzed in the laboratory. Radiological images may need to be taken to differentiate with other possible conditions.

How is gout treated?

Gout is treated by controlling the acute pain with drugs known as NSAIDS. Another group of drugs known as steroids may also be used to reduce the pain and swelling of the joint (inflammation). Doctors may also prescribe drugs to reduce the uric acid and drugs to prevent or ameliorate the acute pain.

My Story

y name is Julian Masitsa shimenga "Julie" as called by most of my friends. At 21 years of age, I am a final year student at the Jomo Kenyatta University of agriculture and technology (JKUAT) pursuing a bachelors’ degree in commerce (Accounting).My hobbies are watching/listening to inspirational talks or stories and cooking, particularly baking.

Growing up as a teenager and a young adult I have always believed in prayer, hardwork and self-discipline as my key drivers to success. Deriving the best you can out of the possible irrespective of the situation is all one can yearn to do in life. In pursuit of my dreams I have learnt that patience is important and believing you can make it will definitely be a motivation towards your goals.Life comes about with various challenges which we should face and come out strongly,it's always a moment to learn new ways of handling situations.

One of the major challenges I encountered was finances and probably you won't be surprised to learn that my education journey has been empowered and supported under a scholarship programme.

As someone who grew up in a low income household,the sheer amount of financial freedom The Rotary Club of Milimani Scholarship (RCM) provided was and remains life changing.

It has enabled me to study full time and allowed me to solely focus on getting my academic pursuits to higher standards by not only playing the role of a sponsor but also mentorship through the Rotarians I have been able to interact with.

One of the dreams I am working towards and would wish to fulfill is supporting students especially orphans and those from humble backgrounds pursue their goals by starting up a foundation that would see this come true. My passion towards this has mostly been driven by the fact that I was once in a similar situation not until RCM stepped in to help. My prayer is that God will enable me to reach out to as many students as I can and walk with them throughout their education journey.

ROTARY FUN FACTS

T

he Rotary wheel, unchanged since 1924, was redesigned many times in the early years of the organization.

A Rotary Club of Chicago emblem that featured a wagon wheel influenced early logos of other clubs and Rotary International.

For many years, the wheel stood alone as our logo. Although the words “Rotary International” are embedded in the wheel, they’re hard to read from a distance. So in 2013, Rotary expanded the official logo to include the word “Rotary” next to the wheel.

The Rotary wheel remains our mark of excellence. In addition to being part of the official logo, it may be enlarged for greater impact and used separately but near the logo.

n an identified remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) platform Zoom room, Rotary club of Milimani,Nairobi-Ridgeways, Mombasa-Nyali and Hurlingham convened at 6 pm EAT on 3 September 2021 for a night of fellowship and contest. “Let me hear you say: ‘HI, MAMBO, WAVE, CHAMPIONS ONLY” as a moderator began the refresher quiz challenge, subsequent to all structures observed. A live chat feed blurts out heart emojis and comments exempli gratia: “We are Ready”. Or: “Nyali is bringing these prizes home” Or: “I am walking/in the matatu but I am tuned in-Kabisa” Utilizing Kahoot!, a game-based learning platform that brings engagement and fun to 1+ billion players every year at school, at work, and at home and a flexible user experience. The moderators from the four clubs included segments on the lines Of the Things You Think, Know or Do-Rotary, Know your Sports, World History-Explorers, Refresher Session, General Knowledge and Take Me Back Baby!-History, which garnered over 20 participants scratching their brains to take home a prize or two

or all.

Priya from RC Mombasa Nyali took over the early lead as the winner of four (4) segments out of seven (7), which she attributes to Moringa among a number of interactions that we have added to participants list to habitude for the next fun contest night. Prizes included a Sandwich marker, Mikaye meal voucher for 2, refillable wall air freshener, 2 bottles of wine, executive neck scarf and branded bottle. Our podium standers came from a mix of all clubs inclusive of Past presidents coming up as 1st and 2nd Runners Up. Dynasties, Zwizi, 5Flow, Shoshorite, Seniors, Kadaddy to official 3 government names indexed attendance for the sessions guaranteed completion at 9 p.m on the dot with the chant, “We need more”.
