Message from District Rotaract Representative Fellow Rotaractors First and foremost, I would like to wish you all a healthy and prosperous new year 2020.

Rtr. Sneha Shakya

District Rotaract Representative Rotaract District Committee, Rotary International District 3292

As we have completed six months of Rota Year 2019/20, I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your kind support and continuous feedback on the regular operation of the Rotaract District Committee, RI District 3292, Nepal and Bhutan. It has been a great six months of leadership at club level and beyond and I am sure that each of us is excited for the next six months and the things that are to unfold. As we reflect on the last six months of our journey together, I get reminiscence of the achievements that we have achieved together. We have always put the best efforts in our surge towards the accomplishments of the goals and vision that all of us have set together. As we are at the later half of the Rota Year, I hope the clubs have finalized or are in the process to finalize our upcoming leaders i.e. “ The Club Presidents “. If not, it is high time that we do so in our quest to the smooth transition of the leadership transfer for next Rota Year. At this very moment, we are at the backdrop of the successful completion of the 12th Rotaract District Conference. Held on 27th and 28th December 2019, the Rotaract District Conference was somewhat a trendsetter in different means; content, format and the rigour. The theme “ Investing in Youth” , itself reverberates the vigour and vividness of youthfulness. The contents of the conference, I believe has been worthy enough for each of us to ponder upon. While each of us is looking forward to the conclusion from each of the sessions, I would humbly request everyone to critically analyse the key discussions that happened throughout the two days of intellectual sensitization and take back the important messages deliberated by our speakers and panelists. My sincere thanks go to the host clubs namely Rotaract Club of Balaju, Rotaract Club of Biratnagar, Rotaract Club of Kasthamandap, Rotaract Club of Mahabouddha and Rotaract Club of Patan West for putting together their best efforts in making the conference successful. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Rotaract District Committee for their efforts in what has been a successful conference so far. Each of us deserves a laurel of applause for the success of the 12th Rotaract District Conference. We would also like to congratulate the grantees of the Rotaract District Grant ( awarded to Rotaract Club of Dharan Ghopa and Rotaract Club of Bhaktapur ) and the winners of Rota Quiz - Rotaract Club of Baglung , one of the highlights of annual district conference. The Rotaract District Committee is thankful to the speakers, panelists, past leaders, members from our partnering institutions, Rotarians , Rotary District Officials , media officials, jury members, invitees and guests for their valuable presence. After a memorable conference, I look forward to your wholehearted participation in upcoming Presidents` and Secretaries` Meet slated on 4th April 2020. I am sure the host clubs ( Rotaract Club of Birgunj Metropolis, Rotaract Club of Birtamode and Rotaract Club of Dharan Ghopa ) will put up grand arrangements to make the event successful. “ADVOCACY AND CAMPAIGN DESIGN” WORKSHOP

In December, King’s College organized a two-day workshop on “Advocacy and Campaign Design. The workshop was facilitated by Youth Activist/Feminist Akriti Ghimire. During the workshop, nine students from King’s College explored theoretical perspectives about advocacy and campaign design, analyzed Amnesty International’s ongoing campaign against the free sale of acids and developed a campaign. Portfolio generating workshops are key components of the MBA Nonprofit program. It aims to transfer important professional skills to nonprofit leaders and enthusiasts in an attempt to promote the discourse of financially sustainable, impact-driven, accountable and transparent nonprofit organizations.

NONPROFIT CONVERSATIONS - COLLECTIVE IMPACT

Over the years, many nonprofit organizations in Nepal have contributed towards important causes like advancing sustainable development, poverty alleviation, the stability of the peace process and promotion of democratic values. They have achieved remarkable results through independent work and collaboration. However, as society’s challenges get more uncertain and complex, mere collaboration is not enough. John Kania and Mark Kramer (2011) comment that “collaboration is nothing new” in the nonprofit sector as it is filled with networks, associations, and partnerships. They suggest nonprofits go beyond collaboration and seek collective impact based on common goals and strategies - collective impact. According to their Stanford Social Innovation Review article, Kania and Kremer identify five conditions of collective impact and collective success: Common Agenda: Collective impact requires all participants to have a shared vision for change, a common understanding of the problem and a joint approach to solving it through agreed-upon actions. Shared Measurement System: Developing a shared measurement system binds everyone together towards a common measurable goal and enhances accountability among organizations working towards the common agenda. Mutually Reinforcing Activities: Collective impact is not about similarities. It is about differences in skills that can complement and mutually reinforce each other’s strengths.

14

www.rotaractnepal.org

Continuous Communication: Developing trust among participating organizations is a challenge. Continuous communications, both formal and informal, among partners is essential to establishing trust and achieving shared targets. Backbone Support Organization: In Krania and Kremer’s words, “creating and managing collective impact requires a separate organization and staff with very specific skills to serve as the backbone for the entire initiative”. Next time you think about collaboration, you might want to consider collective impact!

IMPACT TALK 2020 BEGINS

In January, the Nonprofit Impact Forum (led and managed by the MBA Nonprofit Program at King’s College), organized its first impact talk of the year 2020 in the form of a moderated panel discussion about the role of technology in advancing the works of nonprofit organizations in Nepal. During the panel, IT Entrepreneurs Dibyesh Giri (Smart Tech Solutions) and Punit Jajodia (Parewa Labs) and Software Engineer and Youth Activist, Kshitij Raj Lohani (Apple Inc.) shared their perspectives on the role of technology on nonprofit functions like fundraising, monitoring and evaluation, and disaster risk reduction. Impact Talk, Nonprofit Impact Forum’s flagship event, is a bi-monthly talk program that aims to promote a discourse of “transparent, impact-driven, innovative, and self-sustaining nonprofits that nurture local innovations through participatory collaborations”.

District Rotaract Representative’s Official visits District Rotaract Representative (DRR) visits to clubs are customary practices in Rotaract, yet a fundamental part of the District Committee’s activities. Hence, as a part of the DRR’s activities, meeting club office bearers and general members is essential. DRR Visits are not meant for evaluation, rather a chance for the club members to interact with the DRR and gain the required support and insights, while also discussing the larger Rotaract Movement. The DRR Visit also serves the purpose of sharing about district goals and targets for the year, updates on the achievement of district goals, and how clubs can contribute towards it.
