DJEMAA EL FNA Discover Marrakech’s storied past and colourful present at the city’s main square

In 2001, the UNESCO declared Djemaa El Fna a ‘Masterpiece of World Heritage’ for its locals’ knack of bringing urban legends and cultural tales to life. The practice of recounting narratives in the square dates back to the 11th century, when travellers crossing the Sahara rested in Marrakech for the night.

The city thus became a cultural meeting point where people from all walks of life exchanged fables. This ancient tradition continues to this very day, with storytellers performing at this bustling square in Marrakech, many who take delight in telling tourists that Djemaa El Fna means ‘assembly of the dead’.

An Asian feast is hardly complete without sushi. And while we have an extensive selection, the dynamite volcano roll is a sure hit. But that's not all, for that extra wow factor, the roll is fried with tempura batter and topped with eel sauce, spicy mayo and crab meat.

Magnificent Marrakech Vibrant, colourful and culturally diverse, Marrakech offers a little bit of everything, making it the ideal choice for intrepid travellers seeking experiences that are out of the ordinary

irst-timers in one of the Maghreb’s iconic cities will often feel like there’s something happening all around. Marrakech buzzes with a feverish zeal no matter the hour. By day, the vibrancy of its souks keeps shoppers busy. After sundown, musicians, acrobats, performers and snake charmers bring the alleys of the city to life in never-before-seen ways.

In the past, Marrakech was an important stop along trade routes, providing caravans traversing the Sahara with a spot to refuel before embarking on their journey ahead. Today, this rich heritage is celebrated in its pink-walled medina and souks, where cultural

customs from the Middle East, Europe and North Africa mingle and merge, making it impossible to tell the past from the present.

DAY ONE Since the city was founded by the Almoravids in the 11th century, Marrakech has maintained its strategic position at the crossroads of the east and west, earning the city the prestigious UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Several impressive monuments, some dating back to 1070, continue to dominate the cityscape as a nod to life in ancient Morocco.

Visitors today can experience the local vibe simply by walking around the streets and alleys, in

much the same way as the Berber people did centuries ago. Clearly, there couldn’t be a better way to begin your first day.

After a hearty Moroccan breakfast, head to the Saadian

Tombs for a lesson in 16th-century Moroccan history. This site was commissioned in the mid-1500s

by Sultan Ahmad Al Mansour, who spared no expense in adorning the mausoleum with Italian marble, gilded honeycomb muqarnas and ornate carvings. The structure now houses 150 tombs of Saadi sultans, including Al Mansour himself; wellpreserved it’s sure to impress.

The Sultan’s Badi Palace lies adjacent to the tombs. Once a magnificent royal abode, it is now a monumental ruin. It requires some creativity to imagine its former splendour, but its vast courtyard and the impressive views over the city and the Atlas Mountains from its ramparts make it a must-visit.

Bahia Palace

Cultural customs from the Middle East, Europe and North Africa mingle and merge in Marrakech From here, a quick hop takes you to the Bahia Palace.

An excellent example of 19th-century Moroccan architecture, it was built for the slave-turned-vizier Ba Ahmed.

Allow yourself plenty of time to take in the grandeur across more than 150 rooms, gardens, water fountains and patios.

All that exploring is sure to work up an appetite, so after a hearty lunch, take to the streets again to admire the tallest building in the city – La Koutoubia – which is also the largest mosque in Marrakech.

Past the mosque, slip into Le Jardin Secret, a lush paradise shaded with fruit trees. Take time to admire the elaborate irrigation system that runs through the gardens, which was once part of an ancient network that carried water from mountainside wells to the city.

Saadian Tombs

After sunset, you’ll find yourself drawn to Djemaa El Fna, the heart of the medina, where smoke rises high above the square from restaurants firing up their barbecues. It is here that you can experience the city’s beating heart as you join locals out on their evening tradition to wrap up their day with a hearty meal as musicians, acrobats and storytellers share their talents.

DAY TWO After a dose of history on day one, start your second day by exploring modern Marrakech with a visit to Jardin Majorelle. Created by the French Orientalist painter, Jacques Majorelle, it was later acquired by the iconic designer, Yves Saint Laurent, who made it his residence. Get an early start to avoid the crowds and explore its lush gardens and the structure itself, painted an intense shade of blue, inspired by Moroccan tiles.

A two-minute walk from Jardin Majorelle lies Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, filled with Saint Laurent’s personal collection of haute couture clothing and accessories.

After such inspiration, it only makes sense to go shopping.

Stepping into Morocco’s souks can be overwhelming, but it should take you a few minutes to master the maze of alleys filled with stalls selling all manner of trinkets. From ceramic plates to jewellery, spices and carpets, you’re sure to find plenty of souvenirs to take home.

There couldn’t be a better fit than a traditional Moroccan hammam to draw two days of eventful exploration to an end.

Whether you’re after a luxury spa experience or a quick pick-me-up, the hammam ritual is one of the many aspects of Moroccan culture that hasn’t been lost in time. Authentic encounters such as these only go to prove that you do not simply travel to Marrakech, you truly experience it and fully embrace it.

Two hours south of the city lies North Africa’s highest peak. While scaling Jbel Toubkal in the Atlas Mountains requires expertise, leisurely hikes through the villages at the foothills are common.

In 1978, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) began recognising several landmarks around the world for their cultural, historical, scientific and natural significance, all in an effort to conserve and preserve humanity’s shared heritage.

As of 2019, a total of 1,092 landmarks have been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, ranging from nature’s masterpieces to primitive lands that have witnessed the rise and fall of empires.

Several of these landmarks exist in the Arab world alone, from the famed Egyptian pyramids to Turkey’s lesser-known geological wonders. Each of these sites tells the story of the region in awe-inspiring ways, allowing visitors plenty of opportunities to discover the passage of time in ancient and modern Arabia.

AL AIN OASIS Nestled in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s garden city, Al Ain Oasis was chosen for its natural and cultural significance. This 1,200-hectare expanse is home to over 147,000 date palms of up to 100 varieties and numerous fruit trees. One of the best ways to explore the site is taking a stroll beneath the thick canopy of fronds that have endured countless desert summers.

As you meander down the historic pathways, stop to admire the intricate 3,000-year-old irrigation network that runs beneath the oasis. Traditionally known as the falaj system, this channel highlights the agricultural practices that were prevalent in the region millennia ago. To this day, this age-old system continues to bring fresh water into the oasis by tapping into underground aquifers from the Al Hajar mountain range as well as the Jebel Hafeet mountain.

Although Jordan’s ancient city of Petra is one of the world’s most visited UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the country’s Wadi Rum Protected Area demands equal attention. The protected area, some 100 kilometres south of Petra, is locally known as “the valley of the moon” owing to its resemblance to the moon’s rocky surface. The landscape overflows with natural beauty made up of dramatic geological structures – gorges, rock bridges, cliffs, mountains and caves – that rise above the red sands.

Moreover, the area has been continuously inhabited for over 12,000 years and ancient civilisations have left their footprints behind, which can be experienced through more than 25,000 carvings and inscriptions over the rocks.

BAHRAIN FORT Although Qal’at al-Bahrain was built by the Portuguese in the 16th century, the landmark sits on an ancient mound, formed by centuries of urban rebuilding. It dates back to 2300 BCE, making it one of the oldest structures in the region with a storied past. It is believed that the site was the capital of the ancient Dilmun Empire, where locals conducted their day-to-day commercial activities.

During the successive Tylos and Islamic periods in the region, it served as a maritime trading hub connecting civilisations around the world. Now transformed into a museum, visitors can wander the halls, learning how agrarian communities flourished in Bahrain through the archaeological finds displayed here.

MEMPHIS AND ITS NECROPOLIS Believed to have been founded in 3000 BCE as the capital of ancient Egypt, Memphis was home to the kingdom’s rulers and a sacred temple, reserved for subjects to worship their gods. Today, the area is better known as the Pyramid Fields, stretching over 30 kilometres from Giza to Dahshur.

At the northern end of the site, the imposing Sphinx seems to stand guard over the majestic pyramids of Giza in its backdrop.

Often referred to as the last remaining wonders of the world, the pyramids have long lured travellers, many who come to admire their sheer enormity and impeccable geometry. While some believe that these structures have unearthly origins, they stand as vivid reminders of life in ancient Egypt, built as grand tombs by thousands of workers on the orders of the pharaohs.

While most tourists conclude their visit here, those seeking to explore more should venture further south to the little-known complexes of Abu Sir, Saqqara and Dahshur, scattered with tombs, temples and smaller pyramids.

AL BASS TYRE NECROPOLIS Local lore suggests that the discovery of purple dye can be traced to the Phoenician city of Tyre to 1550 BCE, although the town itself dates back to 2750 BCE. The subsequent trade of purple dye made this ancient port on the southern coast of Lebanon one of the wealthiest cities of its time.

While its former glory has waned, the magnificent structures built by the Romans when they seized the city in 64 BCE still stand.

Albeit in ruins, the striking architecture continues to demand attention, especially the triumphal arch and the enormous hippodrome. Past the arch, the avenue boasts mysterious beauty as it holds hundreds of ornate tombs and marble sarcophagi – a stark reminder of the fallen Phoenician kingdom.

BAHLA FORT Looming over the Omani town of Bahla, this formidable structure sits at the base of the Jebel Akhdar mountains. It was built by local tribes in the Middle Ages to protect the nearby oasis and support the trade of frankincense to the rest of the region.

A thriving spice trade and its inhabitants’ ability to source, store and supply water to camel caravans meant an empire bound to flourish. Its historical significance made Madain Saleh the first landmark in Saudi Arabia to acquire World Heritage Site status.

While much of the ancient city still lies under layers of sand, the uncovered necropolis comprises 131 stone tombs inscribed with carvings of eagles, sphinxes and griffins.

HIERAPOLIS-PAMUKKALE Resembling frozen cascades of a waterfall, warm natural pools hang on the edge of a steep cliff in Turkey’s southwestern town of Pamukkale. Along with its natural significance, the town it’s housed within boasts historic Greek and Roman ruins dating back to the second century BCE, including temples and baths.

In an emirate known for its love of world records, Ain Dubai is set to be one of the city’s biggest launches of 2020. When it opens later this year, it will become the tallest observation wheel in the world. The icon stands at a record height of 250 metres on the man-made island of Bluewaters and is already more than 80 metres taller than the current record holder – the High Roller in Las Vegas. It is also almost double the height of The London Eye, which is just 135 metres.

Meanwhile, on Dubai’s Sheikh Zayed Road, the on-going construction of what looks like a giant eye has already caught the world’s attention. Set to open later this year, the Museum of the Future will serve as a hub for innovation and a testbed for emerging technologies.

Upon completion, the sleek and stylish structure will stand encased in stainless steel and adorned with Arabic calligraphy. But the experiences waiting inside will be far from a typical visit to the museum.

Three of the seven floors of the museum will be dedicated to immersive experiences that will showcase life in the future with a focus on several sectors, including government services, healthcare and food security.

A short drive from the museum, the Mohammed bin Rashid Library along Dubai Creek is almost complete. When it opens its doors this year, it will become the biggest library in the region with over 4.5 million books. The seven-storey structure is equally remarkable. Its design resembles an open book sitting on a traditional lectern which holds the Quran.

Across the city’s historic waterway, the Dubai Creek Tower will see the emirate defeat its own record for the world’s tallest building – Burj Khalifa.

The star attraction of the six-kilometre-long Dubai Creek Harbour project, the skyscraper is expected to be completed in 2020.

The tower will feature the world’s highest observation deck offering 360-degree views of the landscape. Harry Winston was often regarded as the king of diamonds during his illustrious life. His pioneering designs drew in the most influential figures of the 20th century, dazzling everyone from heads of state and royal dignitaries to stars of the silver screen, who continue to flaunt his creations even today.

While Winston left no stone unturned to put his eponymous brand on the map, he also played a pivotal role in the development of luxury jewellery. But for his precocious talent, he came from humble beginnings.

Born a jeweller’s son in 1896, he had a keen eye for precious jewellery, which he ardently demonstrated during his early years. When he was only 12, he purchased a green stone that caught his eye from a local junk jewellery retailer for just 25 cents. Having correctly identified the gem as a two-carat emerald, he sold it two days later for $800. Realising his passion, he quit school at the age of 15 to work in the family business in Los Angeles and after learning the tricks of the trade, decided to strike out on his own.

At the outset, Winston got a taste of success by selling jewellery he purchased from estate sales. He personally attended auctions held by wealthy heiresses, who sold items from their personal collections that they deemed outdated. The talented craftsman then worked on these pieces, reviving them with more modern, timeless settings.

Having laid the foundations for a thriving jewellery making business, the house of Harry Winston was born in New York City in 1932. Under the new brand, he produced several collections, posting record sales in the decade that followed.

Winston always believed that jewellery design should be dictated by the gemstones themselves, rather than their settings. It was this simple yet revolutionary philosophy that won him a highprofile and discerning clientele from around the world and carved him a niche in the annals of jewellery making.

It is believed that during his career, about one-third of the world’s most famous diamonds and gemstones passed through Winston’s hands. While paving the way for the future of luxury jewellery design, he simultaneously built his very own collection of rare stones.

In 1949, Winston acquired one of the most famous stones of all time – the 45.52-carat Hope Diamond. Originally mined in India, the heartshaped blue stone was once the centrepiece of the crown jewels of pre-revolutionary France, before it reappeared almost two centuries later as part of a gem collection owned by a banking family based in London.

Although Winston obtained the stone for his personal collection, he later donated the diamond to the Smithsonian Institution as a gift, helping establish the museum’s National Gem Collection.

Harry Winston believed that jewellery design should be dictated by the gemstones themselves, rather than their settings By the early 1950s, it was estimated that his personal collection was the second largest in the world, after the British royal family.

Some noteworthy stones that were part of his treasury included the Star of the East, the Portuguese Diamond and the Indore Pears.

Throughout his life, Winston used his wealth and influence to support worthy causes. During the 1950s, he also took his jewels on a four-year cross-country exhibition called The Court of Jewels to raise funds for local charities. His philanthropic legacy continues to this day through The Harry Winston Brilliant Futures Charitable Programme, which supports AIDS research and helps disadvantaged young people around the world.

Although Winston maintained a fiercely private profile, his creations made him a household name and rightly so. Behind the scenes, he was making a mark which would endure long after his passing. Several of his techniques, including nature-inspired clustering and the sunflower motif, are widely used even today, and not only by the house of Harry Winston. His influence extends to the entire universe of jewellery making. Clearly, his legacy lives on, way beyond his first Manhattan Fifth Avenue boutique.

To ensure the wellbeing of both guests as well as hotel staff, thermal screening, temperature checks and luggage disinfection will take place upon arrival. To limit exposure to others, valet parking services are temporarily replaced with self-parking amenities.

Cleaning services will take place with increased frequency across all public areas of the hotel using products approved by the ECOLAB Environmental Protection Agency, which are effective against viral and bacterial pathogens.

Delivering a safe space to diners, a host of measures have been implemented across all dining outlets, including a new table set-up offering cosy spaces to guests within an appropriate distance from other diners.

Menus can be accessed on individual mobile devices using QR codes, while contactless payment options have been made available.

In elevators and other public spaces, hand sanitiser dispensers have been installed while signs have been posted to ensure social distancing rules are followed at all times.

At gymnasiums, increased disinfection and cleaning of all the equipment will be carried out while machines will be adequately spaced out to adhere to social distancing norms. At swimming pools and beaches, sun lounges and tables will be frequently cleaned while towel cleaning and handling methods will be supervised to ensure guests enjoy a carefree, leisurely dip.

ummertime across the region is usually characterised by relaxing breaks and travel plans. This year, however, will play out differently as the world battles the unknown in the wake of a global pandemic that has altered the very course of our lives. In a bid to stay safe, people are turning to the comfort of their homes, staying indoors as much as possible until the risks are minimised. But as infections mount, so does the uncertainty surrounding the pandemic.

‘When will it all end?’, is the question many are asking. But even the greatest minds of the decade can only approximate as we have been thrust into a crisis our generation has never known.

Unpredictable events lead to unforeseen outcomes and with new finds coming to light daily, the uncertainty continues to deepen.

But if there’s one thing we can bank on, it is our spirit of resilience.

There have been several occasions in history when the very existence of humanity has been threatened with the likes of earthquakes, floods, wars and pandemics that wiped out nearly half the world’s population. But like the mythological phoenix, humanity always rises from the ashes.

We’re designed to regenerate and rebuild. We strive until we find and settle into a new normal. However, we pay a heavy price.

In this current pandemic, thousands have lost their lives, millions have been infected and several others have been forced to quarantine in their homes. Various businesses have come to a standstill and the global economy is severely hit. But, the human spirit will prevail. It will carry us through these tough times. And just like we’ve done before, we will not only survive this crisis, but we will come out stronger.

In the UAE, since COVID-19 first hit Middle Eastern shores, the country made a milestone announcement to resume economic activities. A bold move paving the way for a gradual return to normal life, it sees stringent new guidelines being implemented to allow businesses to reopen while taking every step to continue to, first and foremost, safeguard public health. It does not mean that the pandemic is over, but it indicates that we are now better equipped to deal with whatever comes our way.

‫لطالما اكن فصل الصيف في جميع أنحاء المنطقة فرصة للخلود إلى‬ ‫الراحة واالستجمام والتخطيط للسفر إلى الخارج‪ .‬ولكن هذا العام‬ ‫يختلف عن غيره من األعوام السابقة‪ ،‬حيث يحارب العالم المجهول‬ ‫غيرت مجرى حياتنا‪ .‬وفي سعينا‬ ‫في أعقاب تفشي جائحة عالمية ّ‬ ‫للحفاظ على سالمتنا‪ ،‬يلجأ الناس إلى راحة منازلهم‪ ،‬ويحاولون البقاء‬ ‫فيها وعدم الخروج قدر اإلماكن لتقليل مخاطر اإلنتشار‪ .‬ومع تزايد‬ ‫حاالت العدوى‪ ،‬تتزايد حالة عدم اليقين حول لك ما يتعلق بهذا الوباء‪.‬‬ ‫"متى سينتهي لك هذا؟"‪ ،‬هذا هو السؤال المطروح اليوم من‬ ‫قبل العديد من الناس‪ .‬ولكن في الحقيقة‪ ،‬فإن حتى أعظم العقول‬ ‫في المجاالت العلمية والطبية ال تزال عاجزة عن إعطاء إجابات شافية‪،‬‬ ‫ولك ما يتم تداوله من معلومات ما هي إال تكهنات وتوقعات‬ ‫غير أكيدة‪ ،‬ألننا أمام أزمة جديدة يمر بها جيلنا للمرة األولى‪ .‬تؤدي‬ ‫األحداث غير المتوقعة إلى نتائج غير متوقعة ومع ظهور اكتشافات‬ ‫جديدة يومياً ‪ ،‬تستمر حالة عدم اليقين في االزدياد‪ .‬ولكن إذا اكن‬ ‫هناك شيء واحد يمكننا االعتماد عليه‪ ،‬فهي تلك الروح المتجددة‬ ‫التي ال تهاب الصعاب‪.‬‬ ‫لقد شهد التاريخ العديد من األحداث التي هددت الوجود‬ ‫اإلنساني في السابق مثل الزالزل والفيضانات والحروب واألوبئة التي‬ ‫قضت على ما يقرب من نصف ساكن العالم‪ .‬ولكن مثل طائر الفينيق‬ ‫األسطوري‪ ،‬تمكنت البشرية دائماً من النهوض من الرماد والتحليق‬ ‫مجدداً‪.‬‬ ‫نحن قادرون على التجديد وإعادة البناء‪ ،‬ونسعى جاهدين‬ ‫لنتمكن من الوصول إلى حالة طبيعية جديدة تعيد لنا االستقرار الذي‬ ‫نتوق إليه‪ .‬ومع ذلك‪ ،‬فقد دفعت البشرية ثمناً باهظاً للك ما حدث‪.‬‬ ‫خالل هذه الجائحة الحالية‪ ،‬فقد اآلالف أرواحهم‪ ،‬وأصيب الماليين‬ ‫بالمرض‪ ،‬واضطر عدد آخر إلى الحجر الصحي في منازلهم‪ .‬وصلت‬ ‫العديد من الشراكت والمشاريع إلى طريق مسدود وتضرر االقتصاد‬ ‫العالمي بشدة‪ .‬لكننا على يقين بأن الروح اإلنسانية ستسود في‬ ‫نهاية المطاف لتنقلنا إلى ّبر األمان‪ .‬وكما فعلنا من قبل‪ ،‬فإننا‬ ‫سننجو من هذه األزمة وسنخرج منها أقوى بكثير‪.‬‬ ‫هناك العديد من الخطوات الجريئة التي تم اتخاذها والتي‬ ‫ستمهد الطريق لعودة تدريجية إلى الحياة الطبيعية‪ ،‬بما في ذلك‬ ‫تعليمات جديدة صارمة للشراكت لتتمكن من إعادة فتح أبوابها مع‬ ‫أوال وقبل لك شيء ‪ -‬على الصحة‬ ‫اتخاذ جميع التدابير الالزمة للحفاظ ‪ً -‬‬ ‫العامة‪ .‬ولك ذلك ال يعني أن هذا الوباء قد انتهى‪ ،‬ولكنه يشير إلى‬
