Chairwoman’s Letter

“What happened to the Fall?” my daughter asked as we woke up to the freshly fallen snow and ventured out. My response was, “Well, it IS 2020, so who knows at this point.” If 2020 has taught me anything, it is that just when you think you have seen it all, you HAVE NOT! As many of you know, I am very active in politics when I am not running the Roswell Chamber of Commerce, and 2020 is a Presidential election year. I had such high expectations on what this election cycle was going to look like, and then March came in like a lamb and blew out like a lion! From that point on, 2020 changed EVERYTHING!

Andra Moore Chairwoman Roswell Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors

October was no different from the previous months. We had a snowstorm before Halloween, for crying out loud! Growing up in Colorado, this was not newsworthy, but here in Roswell, it was huge news! Roswell is resilient, and this too shall pass. Jimmy Dean once said, “I can’t change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.” This is precisely how I feel about 2020. We cannot control the world around us, but we can make the necessary adjustments to be successful. November starts our holiday season; we have Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s just around the corner. I can smell and taste the turkey and cranberry sauce already! I have been Chairwoman since July, Interim Executive Director since August, and I do not recognize the Roswell Chamber of Commerce. In just a few short months, we have come a long way. When I started down this path, I did not know what laid ahead, and there have been many times I felt in way over my head. With the help of the staff and the backing of an excellent board, I have persevered. Throughout this journey, Robert Frost’s poem has come to mind many times: “Two roads diverged in a wood and I - I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” In my short little life here on planet earth, I usually take the road less traveled, and it has indeed made all the difference. I know that my journey at the Roswell Chamber of Commerce has only just begun, and I cannot wait to see what lies ahead. Our best days are in front of us, I am sure. Andrea Moore Chairwoman 6

Let’s talk Business

The Roswell Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a series of Dale Carnegie Virtual Interactive Webinars at a steeply discounted rate to assist businesses and their employees build and grow on social media skills and virtual presenting and other stressful topics that have reared its ugly head during this pandemic environment. The first webinar will take place on December 10, 2020 from 9:00 AM to 10:30 AM online. It can be taken in the privacy of your home, office or anywhere you have a connection to Wi-Fi.

Building Our Belief of Virtual Presenting and Selling of Ideas

Many people are not comfortable with online presenting or selling of ideas and advocating for resources. Virtual presentations have become a necessity. Having the skills, confidence and mindset to handle these situations well is essential. In this session, we focus on how to overcome the challenges of presenting and selling in a virtual environment and how to engage our customers effectively. What a great way to explore new ideas. The series of seven webinars is $50.00 per seat or $250 for all seven per person. Sponsorship are also available. Take a look at the upcoming Virtual Interactive Webinars coming soon.

Elizabeth Morales Administrative Director

Combating Stress & Worry During Uncertainty

Managing through change can be stressful, frustrating, and difficult. Being prepared and using an organized approach can help mitigate negative conditions. Dale Carnegie Training helps leaders prepare for change and encourage employees to embrace the change and drive positive outcomes. Learn the three-step process to manage stress during uncertainty.

Leading Your Team through Internal Conflict and Pressure

How do we lead our teams effectively when pressures grow and conflicts can emerge? In this session we evaluate the current pressures which create conflict in teams, identify sources of conflict that occur during change that affect our team’s performance, and discuss five strategies to overcome this internal pressure and conflict. Leading Performance During Change Managing performance with people working remotely can be difficult and risky. Some companies have systems in place to support remote work, while others have not thought about the different factors that affect performance outcomes when people cannot be in the workplace. As leaders, performance can be diminished when employees have distractions, competing priorities and complexities they face while working from home. In this session we focus on performance alignment and where it gets off track and ways to hold people accountable for performance.

Virtual Presenting: How to Build Relationships Online

There are unique challenges that people face when they conduct a virtual presentation. Most people are fearful, lack adequate preparation and need more effective customer engagement skills. In this session, we discuss how to keep engaged with customers while physically distanced. We discuss the top concerns for virtual presenting, the four keys to virtual presentations and how to engage the customer.

How to Build Your Virtual Presence

Our virtual presence displays our confidence and credibility as a professional. We are strong in person. This should be no different when we are thrust into a virtual setting. In this module, we discuss how to understand how others view us online, what communications factors build trust and how to be most effective behind the webcam.

The Importance of Building Trust Online

Research has shown that perceptions in virtual environments are more challenging that in person. We need to know how to demonstrate trust, understand what creates trusted outcomes and what the four states of client trust are. In this module we build on these skills to allow for an environment with our clients where vulnerability-based trust is possible. We are delighted to provide these webinars for you. Reserve your seat today! Many Blessings, Elizabeth Morales 88

Get Personal with Your Workplace Benefits (Family Features) Choosing employee benefits during annual enrollment is often one of the most important financial decisions you make each year. If your company is like most, it offers benefits to protect you and your family physically, emotionally and financially. In fact, 9 out of 10 employers in a Dynata survey on behalf of Colonial Life and Unum said they have no plans to eliminate or reduce employer-paid insurance benefits. Some employers even plan to boost comprehensive coverage, increasing benefit options or adding telehealth coverage. Before you enroll, understand your needs and the different coverages available, especially supplemental benefits you can usually pay for through payroll deduction. Supplemental Benefits Add Coverage and Financial Protection Supplemental benefits allow you to customize your benefits package with coverage most important to you and your family. Because you sign up through work, it’s usually more affordable than buying coverage on your own. It can also be easier to qualify for coverage as part of a workplace group, often without answering any health questions. The major types of supplemental benefits include: * Life insurance provides financial protection for your family should anything happen to you. It can help loved ones pay for living expenses, debts, medical bills and funeral costs in addition to future needs such as college tuition or retirement. Even if your employer provides life insurance, it may not be enough for your family’s long-term needs. 14 14

Roswell 2020 RoswellChamber ChamberofofCommerce CommerceNewsletter Newsletter• November • January 2020

* Disability insurance is designed to pay a portion of your income if you’re sick or injured and unable to work. It can be offered as short-term - typically 3-6 months - or longterm coverage that can last several years or until retirement. * Dental insurance helps reduce out-of-pocket costs for common dental procedures like cleanings, fillings, crowns, dentures, oral surgery, orthodontia and other treatments. * Vision insurance helps cover costs for exams, glasses and contact lenses, and may include access to discounted materials and services through a network of vision service providers. * Accident insurance offers a lump sum financial benefit if you have an accident or injury. It helps pay out-of-pocket expenses such as doctor bills, co-pays or emergency room fees. * Hospital insurance helps pay for hospital stays and, on some plans, outpatient surgery and diagnostic procedures. * Critical illness insurance provides a lump sum financial benefit if you’re diagnosed with conditions such as heart attack, stroke, cancer, organ failure, Alzheimer’s disease, ALS and more. * Cancer insurance provides more specific coverage for the costs of treating cancer. It can also provide additional benefits for treatments and services such as ambulance transportation, hospital confinement, radiation, chemotherapy, medications and surgery.

Why You Might Need Supplemental Benefits Even the best medical insurance likely won’t cover all your out-of-pocket costs for illnesses and injuries. The average health care deductible for single coverage was nearly $1,500 last year and almost double for family coverage, according to a report from the International Foundation of Employee Benefit Plans. Add in co-pays, coinsurance and other noncovered costs and an average family may have more than $4,700 in out-of-pocket medical costs each year not counting health insurance premiums. Supplemental benefits can help bridge the financial gap. You can use your benefits for uncovered medical costs such as deductibles and copayments or nonmedical expenses such as travel for treatment or child care during recovery. You also don’t have to be sick or injured to take advantage of some supplemental coverage. Many plans include a wellness benefit that can pay a set amount for preventive screenings or diagnostic tests. Visit unum.com/enrollment to learn more about common insurance benefits.

FAMILY FEATURES

T

he holiday season and all its celebrating often means full days of visiting family and friends, opening gifts and enjoying mom ents with loved ones, even if much of that interaction may take place virtually this year. With all the laughter and happiness, you’re bound to get hungry, and feeding the family throughout the day means you’ll need recipe ideas ready for the occasion. Starting the big day with a bountiful breakfast helps begin the festivities on a high note, while appetizers help hold everyone over for the main course, sides and, of course, dessert. Consider these tasty dishes to take your holiday gatherings to new heights from morning to night. Visit Culinary.net to find more holiday meal ideas.

Centering your holiday meal around a

turkey cooked to golden perfection is the ideal way to serve a feast. Without the right preparation and execution, however, your bird could fall short. To ensure your holiday dinner centerpiece lives up to expectations, follow these simple tips, from purchase to plate: 1. Buy the right bird. Finding a turkey that’s just the right size for your expected party is the start to a successful gathering. One common rule of thumb

is the buy 1 pound of turkey per person – so, for a 10-person meal, purchase a 10-pound turkey. Don’t forget that nearl everyone loves leftovers, so you may consider buying a few pounds more than necessary. 2. Be patient. If you opt for a frozen turkey don’t rush the thawing process. For larger turkeys, it can take days to defros properly. 3. Timing is everything. Finding the right amount of time for your turkey to spend in the oven is crucial but not always

the easiest thing to do. For an 8-12pound bird, aim for 2.5-3.5 hours; 12-16 pounds for 3.5-4 hours; 16-20 pounds for 4-4.5 hours, and so on. The key is bringing the turkey to a temperature reading of 170 F. 4. Let it rest. Instead of pulling the turkey out of the oven and immediately carving it, give it a chance to rest for 20-30 minutes, which allows the juices to soak into the meat and moisten it up.

Find more breakfast recipes at Culinary. net.

Orange Eggs Benedict

Serves: 6 Orange Hollandaise: 2 egg yolks 1 orange, juice only 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted water

1 tablespoon white vinegar 8 eggs 1/2 cup butter, softened 6 French baguette slices, 3/4-inch thick each 6 thick slices ham 1/2 cup orange marmalade orange zest, for garnish To make Orange Hollandaise: In small bowl, blend egg yolks, orange juice and salt until combined. Gradually add melted butter into egg mixture while blending. Set aside. In skillet, add water halfway up sides. Add vinegar. Bring to simmer. Break eggs into water to poach. Cook 3-4 minutes until whites are cooked through and yolks are still runny. Using slotted spoon, remove eggs and drain on paper towels. Spread butter on one side of bread slices. Place bread in skillet and cook until golden brown. Add ham to same skillet and cook until browned on both sides. To assemble, spread bread slices with orange marmalade. Top each with one slice cooked ham and one poached egg. Pour hollandaise over eggs and garnish with orange zest.

edicare’s Open Enrollment gives people with Medicare the opportunity to sign up for health or prescription drug plans, or make changes to their existing health plans or prescription drug plans for coverage beginning Jan. 1, 2021. But don’t delay – Open Enrollment ends on Dec. 7. Why compare plans for next year? Just as your health care needs can change from year to year, so do Medicare plans. While Medicare plans generally cover all Part A and Part B benefits, not all plans offer the same cost sharing or additional benefits. You may be able to find new extra benefits, save money – or both.

What’s new this Open Enrollment?

n Check if your doctors are still in-network and your prescriptions are on

the plan’s formulary. n The plan with the lowest monthly premium may not always be the best fit for your health needs. n Look at the plan’s deductible and other out-of-pocket costs that factor into your total costs. n Some plans offer extra benefits, like vision, hearing or dental coverage, which could help meet your unique health care needs in 2021. n If you take insulin, you may find a plan offering insulin for $35 or less for a month’s supply.

Medicare plans in 2021 have historically low premiums – dropping an average of 34% over the last three years, and in some states dropping over 50%. There’s never been a better time to go to Medicare.gov and look at your options. If you’re among the 1 in 3 people with Medicare who has diabetes, here’s some more good news: hundreds of prescription drug plans will be participating in a new insulin savings initiative, through which they’ll offer a month’s supply of a range of insulins for a copayment of $35 or less in 2021. If you take insulin and enroll in one of these plans, you could save an average of $446 per year on your out-of-pocket costs for insulin next year.

Here are some things to consider when shopping for Medicare plans:

Medicare Covers the Flu Shot

This year, it’s more important than ever to get a flu shot, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Many people with Medicare are at greater risk for serious complications from flu. A flu shot is your best protection from getting and spreading the flu, and Medicare covers it at no cost to you if you get it from an in-network provider. Protect yourself and others – visit your doctor, pharmacy or other local provider and get your flu shot today. 32

Medicare is here to Help

Think you’ll need help comparing plans? Here are some things you can do safely from your home: n Find plans at Medicare.gov, where you can see estimates for all your prescriptions. n Call us at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048. Help is available 24 hours a day, including weekends. You can also find help in your community. Get personalized health insurance counseling at no cost to you from your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). Visit shiptacenter.org, or call 1-800-MEDICARE for your SHIP’s phone number. Many SHIPs also have virtual counseling this year.

Medicare Open Enrollment ends on Dec. 7. Now’s the time to act if you want to enroll in or make changes to your Medicare health or prescription drug plan for coverage beginning January 1, 2021. If your current coverage still meets your needs, then you don’t have to do anything. Remember, if you miss the Dec. 7 deadline, you’ll likely have to wait a full year before you are able to make changes to your Medicare coverage. For more information, visit Medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE. If you need help in a language other than English or Spanish, let the customer service representative know the language. You can also find information about Medicare on the Medicare Facebook page and by following @MedicareGov on Twitter.

Get Help Paying for Prescriptions People with Medicare can get prescription drug coverage. Some people with limited resources and income may also qualify for what’s called “Extra Help” to help pay for monthly premiums, annual deductibles and prescription co-payments related to a Medicare prescription drug plan. Medicare estimates that more than 2 million people with Medicare may be eligible for Extra Help but aren’t currently enrolled the program. To qualify for Extra Help in 2020, your annual income must be less than $19,140 a year ($25,860 for married couples). Even if your annual income is higher, you may still qualify. Also, your resources must also be limited to $14,610 ($29,160 for married couples). Resources include bank accounts, stocks and bonds, but not your house, car or life insurance policies. To see if you qualify for Extra Help, apply online at ssa.gov or call 1-800-772-1213.

Protect Your Medicare Card and Help Fight Fraud Don’t let your guard down. Here are a few important steps you can take to protect your identity and help fight Medicare fraud. n Guard your Medicare card and Medicare Number – Treat these just like you would your Social Security card or a credit card. Remember, Medicare will never contact you for your Medicare Number or other personal information unless you’ve given them permission in advance. n Remember, nothing is ever “free” – As the saying goes, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. If someone calls to offer you a “free” service, equipment, or COVID-19 kits, just hang up. n Review your Medicare claims – When you get statements from Medicare, look them over to make sure they’re accurate. Look for any services billed to your Medicare Number that you don’t recognize. Ask questions about your statements if you see something you think is incorrect. Information provided by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services.
