I want to cut a tall tree that sits between my neighbour’s property and mine. I always worry that it will fall and cause damage. The roots are on both of our properties. Can I cut it down or do I need to ask my neighbour’s permission?

If a tree’s trunk stands directly on the boundary between your property and your neighbour’s, it is generally considered jointly owned. In this case, you cannot remove the tree without your neighbour’s consent.

You are permitted to trim branches or roots that encroach onto your property, but only up to the boundary line. However, you cannot carry out such works that would cause harm to the overall health of the tree. If your pruning leads to the tree dying, you could face: 1. A legal claim for damages – Your neighbour could take civil action against you for the cost of replacing the tree or any damage caused.

2. Fines or penalties – If the tree was protected under a Tree Preservation Order or located in a conservation area, you could be fined.

3. Liability for property damage – If the tree falls and damages property (yours or theirs), you may be responsible for the repair costs.

It is always advisable to inform your neighbour before doing any work so as to maintain good relations and avoid disputes.

Additionally, ensure that any tree work complies with local regulations, such as checking for Tree Preservation Orders with your local authority.

A man with strong Roscommon connections has been applauded for his bravery during a mass stabbing attack on a train in England.

The incident happened last Saturday night when a knife-wielding man stabbed several passengers on a train travelling to London.

Eleven people were hospitalised, but there have been no fatalities. A man has been charged with ten counts of attempted murder.

One of the people who was stabbed was 61-year-old Stephen Crean (pictured), who was returning to his south-west London home after watching the Nottingham Forest-Manchester United game.

Crean has been hailed this week for his bravery, having put himself between the attacker and other passengers. He was repeatedly stabbed by the assailant, who said to him: “Do you want to die?”

Stephen Crean’s father is a native of Castlerea, Co Roscommon. His mother is from Dublin and Crean is the proud bearer of an Irish passport.

The horror unfolded on Saturday on a train travelling from Doncaster to London King’s Cross. A man, later arrested, began moving through the train, stabbing passengers.

Speaking to various media outlets since the horrific events, Stephen Crean outlined what happened.

He revealed that he had placed himself directly in front of the attacker, meaning fellow passengers in the carriage he was travelling in were able to get to safety.

“There was nowhere to go. I didn’t have much choice. All of a sudden the door of the carriage opened, people ran past me and they were

shouting, ‘run, run, run, man’s got knife’. So I let these people run past me, families, women, young lads. I could see somebody on the floor behind him with what looked like blood on them.

“He got nearer and nearer to me, so I went a little bit further back. He came up… and by that point I was back at the buffet car but they were making sure that door was locked. I heard it click and that’s when it kicked off.

“He just looked pretty moody, pretty angry. He knew what he wanted to do and he was going to do it. And then, all of a sudden, this knife comes out, and I went straight for him. I tried to punch him, this and that. I was trying to hold his arm [with his knife]. It kicked off. But he caught me on the top of the head.”

Stephen said the knifeman asked if he wanted to die before he felt the knife in his arm. He says he was stabbed six times in all. He was later hospitalised.

As to his Irish connections, Crean said he will always class himself as Irish. A passionate supporter of the Republic of Ireland football team, he added that he spent childhood summers visiting his cousins in Roscommon, Greystones and Cork.

When police entered the train on Saturday they apprehended the man. Earlier this week, Anthony Williams (32) appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court charged with ten counts of attempted murder. He was also charged with one count of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one count of possession of a bladed article. The accused is due to appear at Cambridge Crown Court on December 1st.

Lecture on the Irish Jacobite Army

A meeting of the County Roscommon Historical & Archaeological Society will take place at 8 pm on Tuesday, November 11th in the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre.

Roscommon Town Christmas Lights update The volunteers are already in action – with preparations for the official switch-on of the Roscommon Christmas Lights on Sunday, November 23rd progressing. No less than 38 volunteers were out last Sunday!

This year Roscommon will have a fabulous 11-metre high eco-friendly Christmas tree with a green garland effect and warm white LED lights. This is a natural progression of the eco-friendly plan that began

two years ago to reduce energy costs by retrofitting the lighting system, bringing it up to NEC standards by replacing old wiring, junction boxes, column motifs, curtain lights and features.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A (mostly) light-hearted look at the week that was…

THURSDAY Con’s milky way I sometimes think of the late Con Houlihan, the great sportswriter who hailed from Knocknagoshel in County Kerry. I was reminded of him today when reading an interview with the author of a new book on famous Dublin pubs, aptly called ‘The Dublin Pub’.

In the interview, the author quotes Con’s response when asked about his preferred drink – brandy mixed with milk (a combination that raised eyebrows). Con explained: “The brandy takes the sting out of the milk.”

Con’s wonderful Evening Press columns were unmissable back in the 1980s. I remember reading his account of an Ireland-Scotland rugby international on the Monday after the game. Despite the close attention of a couple of opponents, Ireland’s Moss Keane, using all his strength, scrambled over the try line. Reflecting on the try, Con wrote: “…. It just goes to show a rolling Scot gathers no Moss.”

This year marks the 100th anniversary of Con’s birth (December 6th next). He died in 2012, having entertained, educated and entranced us with his beautiful prose over so many years. A national treasure, Con is fondly remembered. *‘The Dublin Pub: A Social and Cultural History’ by historian Donal Fallon is published by New Island Books

FRIDAY Memories of ‘Jayo’ So, Jayo’s back! Last night, Roscommon County Board confirmed the inclusion of former Dublin star Jason Sherlock as a member of Mark Dowd’s Roscommon senior football management team.

It’s 30 years since the summer of Sherlock, when the then-teenager burst into public consciousness, his impact with the Dublin team leading to ‘Jayo-mania’ – to the extent that a popular chant dominated that championship year. It went something like

‘Boom, boom, boom, let me hear you say Jayo!’

That was the year I wrote my first book. ‘The Search for Sam’ was an account of that 1995 All-Ireland SFC season, whereby I travelled to games all over the country and wrote about the characters, the atmosphere, and a little bit about the actual football. Published by Mercier Press, ‘The Search for Sam’ was on the national bestsellers’ list for a period.

I was fortunate with the timing. It was quite a memorable championship season, with Dublin ending a 12-year title drought, Sherlock’s emergence adding glamour and excitement to the campaign.

‘Jayo’ became an overnight cultural phenomenon. With a following normally reserved for boy band members, the 19-year-old captured the imagination of young fans, and was quickly dubbed the GAA’s ‘Spice Boy’.

I was in Navan on the afternoon that Sherlock lived up to the early hype, scoring a super goal against Laois. As Jayo-mania gripped the country, I also covered the Dubs’ Leinster final win over Meath, their semi-final defeat of Cork, and then the final itself, in which Dublin edged out Tyrone and were

reunited with the Sam Maguire Cup. The night of the final, I finished the book in Dublin, and submitted the last chapter. The publishers, no doubt in a bid to maximise sales, opted for photos of Sherlock and Peter Canavan on the front cover, ignoring the option of something more artistic.

The following week, at an event attended by Sherlock, Mercier’s PR people approached the man of the moment and asked if he’d sign a copy of the book for yours truly. Jayo/Jason obliged – also scribbling (as a quip): ‘I’m suing over that photo on the cover!’

FRIDAY Hold the front page Inevitably, today’s UK newspapers are all leading with King Charles’ decision to strip disgraced Prince Andrew of his royal titles.

As unpleasant as the context is, newspaper sub-editors have a job to do.

The late pop icon, Prince, was known for part of his career as ‘The artist formerly known as Prince.’

Credit then to whoever came up with today’s Sun newspaper headline,

which read: ‘The Andrew formerly known as Prince’.

SATURDAY Ivan, Jim… & Matt So Matt Cooper has ‘sacked’ his pal Ivan Yates from their ‘Path to Power’ podcast – because the ex-minister failed to declare that he’d been advising Jim Gavin during the recent presidential election.

I know the outcry relates to conflict of interest, but maybe Ivan didn’t mention it because he was… embarrassed. Would you admit you’d been advising Jim Gavin in those election debates?

SUNDAY Then and now Sometimes you’d have to envy the old folks in days gone by… sitting around the hearth, churning out any morsels of decent gossip they’d picked up, revisiting ghost stories, maybe handing around a coveted copy of the Irish Press so that neighbours could digest the latest official news on ‘The Emergency’, snippets from the courts

in England, or goings-on in far-off America.

They weren’t slaves to the 24-hour news cycle, obsessed with smartphones, prisoners to an algorithmdriven regime.

Current generations? We’re well informed, but we’re exhausted (not to mention stressed). Either we have an incredible appetite for news, or our media masters think we have. As for the (arguably) sinister algorithms, they are influencing – some might even say controlling – much of the daily existence of billions of social media users worldwide.

Yes, the theoretical physicist (Albert) is famous for developing the theory of relativity, but could he plámás a young farmer from Kerry on Winning Streak?

I digress. In an article on the RTE website, titled ‘9 of the best moustaches to inspire you this Movember’, Einstein had to settle for second place – behind the impressively moustachioed Marty. Clarke Gable, Freddie Mercury, Tom Selleck and Hulk Hogan were next in line.

For the record, I would contend that Einstein still trumps Marty Whelan on quantum theory-related issues, whereas Marty would almost certainly have the edge on Albert in a Eurovision Song Contest commentary head-to-head.

€1.098m in funding for four outdoor projects in county Minister for Rural and Community Development Dara Calleary has approved €1,097,991 for four Roscommon initiatives under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS). *Castlerea River Walk: €500,000 to replace steps with a 21-metre ramp and upgrade the riverside path for full accessibility. *Cavetown Lake: €200,000 for a new pontoon, seating area and improved shower facilities. *Mote Park Amenity: €200,000 for trail restoration and a new car park. *Suck Valley Way: €197,991 (Roscommon LEADER) to improve walking surfaces and access.

The awards form part of a €16.5m national pack-

age supporting 63 projects announced on November 3rd 2025. Works will be delivered by Roscommon County Council and local partners.

Senator Gareth Scahill said, “This is more than just infrastructure, it will improve lives in Roscommon. These projects will give people greater access to nature, recreation and community spaces to support physical and mental wellbeing.”

Feighan welcomes Leitrim funding Sligo-Leitrim Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan has welcomed the announcement of €16.5m to deliver 63 projects nationwide through the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), made recently by Minister of State at the Department of Rural

and Community Development and the Gaeltacht Jerry Buttimer TD and Minister Dara Calleary.

Deputy Feighan welcomed €700,000 for two projects in County Leitrim: a Leitrim Development Company project and Leitrim County Council’s project.

The Leitrim Development Company project comprises the further development of the Bóthar Na Naomh trail and extension of the trail to Cloone GAA park and Creigharee Ancient Holy Well. This ongoing project receives a further €200,000.

Leitrim County Council’s project comprises the Dromod-Rooskey greyway – the construction of a 1.95km-long greyway along the L1601, linking the villages of Dromod and Roosky. This project has received €500,000.

Lough Key Forest and Activity Park among top 20 most-visited Lough Key Forest and Activity Park in Co Roscommon has been named among the Top 20 most-visited Coillte recreational forests in Ireland, according to visitor statistics recorded in 2024. Lough Key Forest and Activity Park had 139,000 visits last year, placing it sixth overall in the Top 20 most-visited Coillte recreational sites nationwide.

Lough Key offers a wide range of outdoor experiences, including walking and cycling trails, as well as adventure activities such as ziplining, kayaking, and boating. This autumn, the park held its annual Halloween Fest – Lough Spookey, featuring a variety of seasonal

attractions for all ages. Highlights included a Halloween Disco, the Classic Creature Walk, and the spine-tingling Tunnel of Terror, making it a must-visit destination.

In first place with almost 350,000 visits, Avondale Forest Park is home to the visitor destination Beyond the Trees Avondale, which officially opened in July 2022. In addition to Avondale House, the home of Charles Stewart Parnell, it now boasts a unique Treetop Walk and Viewing Tower, and Ireland’s longest slide!

Over three million people visited Coillte’s top 50 most popular recreational woodlands and parks in 2024.

Columbarium Wall and Reflection Area St. Coman’s Cemetery, Ardsallagh Beg, Roscommon Town The proposed development will provide an alternative option to burials plots for interment of cremated remains. A Columbarium Wall is a structure containing a collection of niches for the respectful inurnment of human remains following cremation.

The development involves: • Construction of eight number granite Columbarium Wall units to include paved surfaces surrounding walling units for a reflection area of granite paving and silver chip coated asphalt with granite benches • Construction of granite kerbing and low maintenance evergreen low-level hedging surrounding walls and reflection area • All associated works (foundations to walls, kerbing, substrate to paved areas, erection of pre-cast units and planting of hedging).

Fundraising draw for new community centre in Corrigeenroe Plan to build a new community centre in Corrigeenroe are underway. Two open community meetings were held recently, and through these meetings it was evident that there is strong support for a community centre in the area – to facilitate local events, youth activities, and active age programmes, as well as to act as a meeting place/tech hub for the community.

The project is in its early stages, with the current focus being on assessing possible sites for the community centre and gathering information on what grants are available to assist with it.

Of course money is needed to get money; feasibility studies, architect fees, legal advice, etc are not free services.

An ongoing fundraising draw has been launched to help with these funds that are required to build the community centre, which will be a multipurpose space for everyone in the community. Local

community members are also being encouraged to join in and help raise funds.

Death of former Fourmilehouse resident in US < PAUL HEALY

Michael Dryhurst’s presence in Fourmilehouse – ‘Old Ballinderry Schoolhouse, Fourmilehouse’ to be precise – brought just a touch of Hollywood glamour to the area. After all, Marlon Brando knew him. So did Frank Sinatra.

Sean Connery too. When Michael and his wife Karen moved here in 2006, it was time for the people of Fourmilehouse, Roscommon Town and environs to get to know him too.

I was very sorry to hear of the passing of Michael Dryhurst, news of which only reached us towards the end of October. He died in America on September 9th, 2025 at the age of 87. He is survived by his devoted wife, Karen; niece, Charlotte; nephew Nick and great-nephew, Tom. He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and May Roberts Dryhurst and brother, Christopher Dryhurst.

Before moving to the USA a few years ago, Michael and Karen were residents of Fourmilehouse, Co Roscommon for over a decade.

A Golden Globe-winning movie producer/director, Michael Dryhurst was a native of London who fell in love with rural Roscommon. When they saw the old Ballinderry schoolhouse, Michael and Karen decided that their search for an idyllic retreat in

Michael Dryhurst… born in London, he had a successful career as a producer/director (winning a Golden Globe), and later spent over a decade living in Fourmilehouse, Co Roscommon, before moving to America about six years ago.

Ireland was over. On purchasing the property, they set about renovating it and made it their home.

During his time in Roscommon, I became quite friendly with Michael. He was an occasional contributor to the Roscommon People, by way of commissioned articles and letters to the editor. His letters to this newspaper reflected his direct, opinionated style, always laced with acerbic humour. Favourite subjects were what he considered to be flaws or gaps in the quality of public services; impatience/ frustration with politicians too… ‘authority’ figures almost always the ‘target’ of his pen.

He also did some voluntary work with RosFM,

and wrote articles and books on a lifelong passion of his – buses (as a young man, Michael owned a double-decker bus before acquiring a car).

He was born in London on March 22nd 1938. At just 17 years of age he entered the movie industry, starting as a ‘clapper loader’, then working his way through various departments as he learnt his craft. In time, he became a producer, director, production manager and camera operator.

For over half a century he worked with many highly accomplished movie stars, including the aforementioned Brando, Sinatra and Connery. One can add in Helen Mirren, Ava Gardner, and many more. Indeed Fourmilehouse’s new resident all those years ago worked on many famous movies, including Excalibur, Never Say Never Again (starring Sean Connery), and Hope and Glory (1987), for which Dryhurst received a Golden Globe award for his producer/ director role. He was assistant director on Superman (1978), and co-producer on ‘Hudson Hawk’ (1991), which starred Bruce Willis and Andie MacDowell. In

all, he worked on eleven Oscar-nominated films during his career.

When Michael first moved to America, he married an American lady, Karen Gordon. Later came the move to Ireland, where that property in Fourmilehouse caught the couple’s eye during their house-hunting across rural Ireland. In 2010, Karen established Roscommon Chocolate Factory. The couple merged into the local community, embracing new friendships and an environment and quality of life that appealed to them.

A Celebration of Michael Dryhurst’s life was held at Caruth Village Funeral Home, Hot Springs Village, Arkansas on Friday, September 19th.

An email from a ‘mutual acquaintance’ brought the sad news of Michael’s passing. The final scene in a life well lived. Sincere sympathy to his wife Karen, family members and friends. May he rest in peace.

Grow Mental Health, a registered

Irish charity, offers free, confidential, community-based support groups to anyone experiencing mental health challenges. With a long-standing presence across Ireland, Grow’s approach is simple but powerful: support in a safe, nonjudgmental environment. Group

participants can give and receive support, sharing how they have overcome challenges. People share their own stories. The groups are focused on empowering people to take small, manageable steps toward personal growth and improved wellbeing.

Communities locally ‘to gain from Safety Fund’ A national allocation of €4.4m in Community Safety funding did not directly include any Roscommon recipients – but Fine Gael’s Senator Gareth Scahill, pictured left, says it will still benefit local projects.

“This fund redirects the proceeds of crime seized by the Criminal Assets Bureau and An Garda Síochána back into our community”, he commented.

“Redirecting the proceeds of crime into community safety isn’t just a smart policy, it’s justice in action. Fine Gael has long championed initiatives that empower communities and protect the vulnerable.”

This year’s national allocation is a 33% increase on the €3m awarded in 2024. The Fund will support 42 community safety projects across the country. This is almost double the number of projects funded by the first Community Safety Fund in 2022.

Successful projects this year focus on a broad range of thematic areas that include domestic, sexual and genderbased violence (DSGBV); countering drug related intimidation; addiction recovery and substance misuse; and violence reduction.

Youth support, community reintegration of offenders; trauma informed and restorative approaches as well as initiatives supporting minority or marginalised groups have also been funded.

Senator Scahill said that in Roscommon and throughout the rest of the country, projects like PEER (People Educating for Empowerment and Rights: a peer-led programme by people with intellectual disabilities, promoting community safety, inclusion, and justice), A Game of two Halves, the Community Safety Toolkit, Gateway Assessment Programme (GAP), PsyCare Ireland NITE Programme (Nightlife Intervention and Training for Empowerment), and App Happy Plus (discussing online dating safety with gay and bisexual men) will benefit from the fund.

‘More road closures than usual’ – but Council defends approach < PAUL HEALY

Council moves contractors on over ‘traffic disruption’ Roscommon County Council instructed contractors working on a new water connection in the Monksland area to leave the site following public anger over lengthy traffic delays.

In a statement issued to the Roscommon People on Tuesday, Roscommon County Council said it was aware that there was “significant traffic disruption” experienced by commuters and residents on the Old Tuam Road in Monksland on Monday evening and Tuesday morning of this week.

The Council said the works will not re-

sume until a “satisfactory” Traffic Management Plan is put in place.

“This traffic congestion was due to temporary traffic lights in place to provide a new water connection to a new development in the area. The contractors on site were working on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

“On the instruction of Roscommon County Council the contractors left site on the morning of Tuesday, November 4th.

“The works will be completed by the contractor once a satisfactory Traffic Management Plan has been agreed.”

Roscommon County Council has acknowledged that residents and motorists are currently being inconvenienced by more road closures than usual – but has defended how it is communicating to the public on this issue.

A number of roads around the county are currently the subject of ongoing works and there have been several closures of roads over the past week or so.

A local resident who contacted the Roscommon People to express frustration on the issue said that the scale of road closures is causing huge disruption for motorists.

Sean McGarry said that the Castlerea-Frenchpark road is currently closed, as is a section of the N5.

Mr McGarry said: “Several roads in this area are closed.

I’m meeting motorists on ‘side roads’ who really don’t know where to go. I feel that Roscommon County Council has not communicated well on this. They are just putting up ‘detour’ signs but there is no further assistance to motorists beyond that.

“I work across a large area, including in Mayo and Sligo, and all these road closures mean people like me have to start our day a lot earlier (than usual). There is a lot of inconvenience.

“I bring my money (wages) back to County Roscommon, and I rear a family here. A lot of people are frustrated with the Council’s inability to spread its annual budget so that these roadworks don’t all have to come about together at the end of the year.”

Mr McGarry claimed that the Council’s approach on signage is inadequate and added that motorists are not getting sufficient notice of the road closures.

When contacted by the Roscommon People, Roscommon County Council confirmed that works are ongoing across a number of road projects throughout the county.

“Some of these projects are overlapping, which has resulted in more road closures than usual for this time of year. Road users are advised to follow all road closure signs in place. Attempting to use alternative routes that may not be open could lead to frustration.”

The Council added that all road closures are advertised in accordance with legislation, and notices are also circulated via Roscommon County Council’s social media platforms and the MapAlerter service.

“Roscommon County Council acknowledges any inconvenience caused and is actively working with on-site contractors to ensure works are completed with minimal disruption.”

Over the past two years, Nicole has built up a loyal following of customers who travel from all over, from Carrick-on-Shannon and Longford to Boyle, just to have their beloved pets pampered at The Fluff Factory!

“It’s unbelievable how far some people travel,” she says. “I’m so grateful for every single one of my customers. Their loyalty and support mean the world to me.”

This year, that dedication and care were recognised nationally when Nicole was nominated for Salon Based Dog Groomer of the Year at the prestigious National Pet Awards in Dublin.

When asked what’s next, Nicole keeps it simple: “Honestly, the plan is just to keep doing the best job I can for all my favourite doggies! I absolutely love what I do.”

As The Fluff Factory celebrates this milestone, Nicole wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to all her customers, both two-legged and fourlegged, who have made the journey so rewarding!

Wishing Lisa well… and on the trail of The Three Amigos Our columnist Frank Brandon talks about the country music artists he hopes to see perform live, the recent violent scenes in Drogheda, coffee in Dubai at just €850 a cup, and more!

Anyone who has been with me through the years will know that I have always had a soft spot for country singer Lisa McHugh, and I make no secret of the fact that she is my favourite female Irish artist.

While I never got to see her in person, I love listening to Lisa singing and looking at her videos. And so, this week I was delighted to see her on Opry Le Daniel, where she sang a number of beautiful songs and looked a million dollars.

Now, I, along with thousands of her fans, was well aware of the awful health issues she has recently had, and I thought for a few minutes that she was back on stage and in full health. However, sadly, when I checked I found out that the concert had been recorded a couple of months before her illness, and she is still recuperating from a condition called Functional Neurological Disorder (FND).

As a result, she temporarily lost function in both her legs, leading to her more or less having to learn to walk again. She has been refreshingly honest in her online posts, detailing the

struggle she’s had in dealing with this devastating condition, all while trying to be a wife to husband Nathan, and a mum to her two young children.

Obviously Lisa has had to put her career on hold, and God only knows when we will see her back on stage. I know it’s none of my business but, in an industry that is famous for devoting time out to help all kinds of good causes, I wonder could the country music stars of Ireland not put a massive concert on somewhere to help Lisa out in this very difficult time – I think it would be a wonderful gesture.

In the meantime, I wish her well, and when she does get back in action, if I still have my health I will definitely go to see her.

Sticking with country music: another of the acts that my late wife Carol and myself often talked about going to see is The Three Amigos, and once again we never actually got to do so. And so last night, I decided that I would book tickets to their upcoming show in the TF in Castlebar.

I went online to buy tickets from Ticketmaster, but after a lot of time, effort, high blood pressure, and bad language (I’m not blaming anyone but myself and the fact that I’m not internet-savvy), I gave up and resigned myself to the belief that I would never get to see the three lads.

However, the good news is that my two daughters, Tara and Lisa rang me just as I had given up, and a few minutes later they had all sorted. God willing, I am off to the TF over the Christmas to the Three Amigos’ concert. I can’t wait!

Anyone for a cuppa? At just €850…

I have never been to Dubai, and at this stage of my life I don’t suppose I ever will. But I do know enough to know that it’s renowned for its extravagance, and the fact that it houses some of the world’s wealthiest people.

Among other things, it has a shopping mall with an indoor ski area, the world’s tallest building, and an artificial island dotted with the most luxurious 5-star hotels.

David Beckham, the former Manchester United footballing star, has a luxury mansion on the man-made island, along with an apartment that he purchased for between five and six million euro, while the wealthiest resident is thought to be Russian-born Pavel Durov, who is worth a healthy 17.1 billion dollars.

Anyway, for all of them who are partial to a nice cup of coffee, as indeed a lot of us are, the good news is that Turkish man Serkan Sagsoz has opened a café over there called Julith, where you can buy the most expensive cup of coffee in the world, costing just €850 a cup. Apparently it’s made from Panamanian coffee beans and tastes a bit like honey – delicate and sweet. I am sure Julith serves cheaper coffee as well, but according to one resident, having a cup of the dear coffee is “just another experience they can boast about”!

For the rest of us less-well-off coffee lovers, a cup of cappuccino from the café in the rugby club in

Creggs is as good as it gets – and by my reckoning, you could have almost 250 cups in Creggs for the one cup in Dubai.

However, if I ever get to Dubai, watch this space – just about three weeks of my State pension would buy me a cup!

Flames of hate It’s just after TV News time on Sunday evening, and there can be no doubt that the world we are living in is a very troubled and dangerous place.

For the last couple of years we have grown accustomed to seeing every kind of atrocity on our news channels. First Ukraine, then Gaza, have had acts of unspeakable cruelty and brutality being carried out on their respective citizens, and thousands upon thousands of innocent people – adults and children – have lost their lives in two totally unjustified wars.

I have to admit that I am so used to despicable acts that it would take a lot to shock me – and yet this Sunday evening, I cannot get over what I have just seen on the RTÉ News.

I saw a video of a masked person deliberately setting fire to the stairs in an IPAS centre in Drogheda, knowing that said stairs was the only way out for the people living on the upper floors, and – without the intervention of the fire brigade – probably sentencing them all to death.

Four children – including a 20-week-old baby – were among the five people who had to be rescued from the burning building and 28 International Protection applicants are now homeless as a result of this cowardly and heinous act.

Now you would want to have your head buried in the sand to not be aware of all the controversy about our immigration policy, and there are many of our own citizens who disagree with the Government’s actions. While I believe in helping genuinely displaced and vulnerable people, I also acknowledge the fact that a lot of Irish people are suffering badly from lack of housing, a health service that can’t cope, and lots of other things like childcare and energy costs and an ever-increasing cost of

living.

However, no matter what your beliefs are about our immigration policy, this arson attack was beyond reprehensible, and I really hope the masked coward who set fire to that staircase in Drogheda gets what’s coming to them. How anyone could do such a thing beats me, but what’s worse is the fact that the person in question is probably a hero to the other lowlifes that seem to have no respect whatsoever for the laws and regulations of this country.

Let’s hope the Gardaí catch the culprit and throw the book at him.

And finally…

Sporting Club Ireland, of which my son Mark and his wife Aoife are the founding members, are holding an event in MacKenzie’s in Dublin 2 on next Wednesday evening, November 12th, with the current Celtic FC manager and former Irish team manager Martin O’Neill as special guest.

There will be photo opportunities and drinks from 6.30 pm, dinner at 7.30 pm, and interviews and chats afterwards until 10.30 pm. It promises to be a great evening and there will be a number of other well-known faces in the audience.

For not only Celtic fans, but also all football followers, O’Neill is one of the all-time greats, and if you want to see and hear from him, you can get tickets at thesportingclub. ie. Hopefully I will see you all there!

Following the record high water level of 69.38m OD in April 2024, Roscommon County Council, the Office of Public Works, and an expert working group developed a three-pronged approach to manage the immediate and long-term flood risk at Lough Funshinagh.

The first aspect of the plan was to implement Individual Property Protection (IPP) for vulnerable dwellings in the short-term.

These IPP measures were implemented in 2024 and 2025.

Next was an Interim Flood Relief Scheme. During 2024, an interim scheme was developed to manage water levels in Lough Funshinagh and allow time for a permanent solution to be identified and constructed.

Planning permission from the then-An Bord Pleanála, for the interim scheme was granted in January 2025.

The water levels in Lough Funshinagh are managed by controlling the rate of flow to the Cross River, which naturally discharges to the River Shannon at Coologoriff. These works were completed by April 2025.

Lastly, came the Permanent Scheme.

This week, the Council said: “In late 2024, work recommenced on designing a permanent solution to manage the flood risk at Lough Funshinagh with the end of 2025 being the anticipated submission date of the planning consent application to An Coimisiún Pleanála.

Roscommon MART WATCH Cattle: Special Sale of Bullocks. There was a large entry of stock on offer at Friday’s sale (October 31st), with trade remaining strong for both bullocks and stripper cows. There was a large attendance of customers at the ringside with online bidders also active.

Bullocks fetched an average of €4.79 per kilo up to €6.52 per kilo. There was a large entry of dry cows, and they made an average of €3.65 per kilo up to €4.34 per kilo.

Bull weanlings fetched from an average of €5.86 per kilo up to €8.67 per kilo. Heifer weanlings made from an average of €5.92 per

kilo up to €12.38 per kilo.

The next weanling sale takes place at 4 pm on Tuesday, November 11th.

by, inter alia, the successful consent process for the Interim Flood Relief Scheme (which included hydrology, hydraulic and environmental analysis), the OPW’s Lough Funshinagh State of Knowledge Draft Report (dated 2024), and the environmental assessments (which include the Natura Impact Statement and Environmental Impact Assessment Report), to support a planning consent application for the preferred design option.

“Following preliminary studies and public consultation, the emerging preferred option, from the seven possible options, was presented to the public in April 2025. The consultants are continuing to progress the environmental surveys and assessments necessary to support a planning application for this emerging preferred option. The dual project objectives are managing the flood risk and minimising the impact on the environment in this area.”

The Council says that as

part of the process, the consultants have identified additional constraints on the emerging preferred route that, in line with best practice, “warrants reassessment of all options.” Consequently, this will extend the timeline for submitting a planning application to the second half of 2026.

The Council said: “Given the history to this project, it is essential that the planning application is evidence-based so it can withstand scrutiny and challenge through the planning process and any potential subsequent challenge to that process.”

Roscommon County Council and the OPW are satisfied that this extension of time, to submit to planning, will not increase the flood risk for the communities around Lough Funshinagh, given the benefit from the Interim Flood Relief Scheme and IPP works over the coming years. Roscommon County Council said it will continue to engage with all stakeholders in Q1 2026.

Castlerea MART WATCH There were over 700 lots presented at the sale of heifers, cows, calves, runners and weanlings held on October 30th as weather conditions deteriorated, but trade and prices remain extremely strong for the time of year.

The heifer ring reported an excellent trade, with quality breeding-type heifers in particular much sought after, and numerous lots exceeding €7 a kilo. Breeding-type heifers made up to €3420, with an excellent clearance taking place. The weanling rings, with increased numbers on offer, witnessed bulls peak at €8.06 a kilo, while heifer weanlings reached €7.54 a kilo. Dry cows hit €3270, and cows with calves at foot made up to €4200, with springers reaching €3530. The runner ring recorded a top price of €1900, with lots making up to €7.12 a kilo.

Public meeting to discuss Castlerea solar farm plans Plans for a solar farm in Castlerea will be outlined at a public meeting in the town today (Thursday, November 6th) at 8 pm in the Trinity Arts Centre.

The project is being planned by Castlerea Town Trust for an area known locally as the ‘Cow Park’ in the town’s Demesne.

Paul Glynn of Castlerea Town Trust is encouraging all members of the community to attend the meeting to hear details of the plans.

“We believe that this is a project that will help drive financial returns that will be reinvested into the future development of the Demesne and in the future development of the town,” explained Paul.

“Over the past few months several storms have caused severe damage to the Demesne,

uprooting trees and causing widespread issues.

Unfortunately, the Town Trust income stream is extremely limited, and the costs involved in this clean-up operation, plus the day-to day costs involved in maintaining the Demesne are increasing.

“A number of alternative income streams and options for the future have been examined, among them the proposed solar farm,” he said.

He pointed out that an initial study of the Castlerea project has shown its strong potential given the land availability, community engagement and strategic location: “The site in question has been deemed extremely suitable for the project,” he said.

“We believe that this project will drive revenue streams to secure the future development of the

Demesne; will allow us to financially contribute to other groups in the town, ensuring that all sections of the community benefit; enable the local production of clean electricity; show real climate action leadership by the community that will deliver long-lasting environmental, economic and social benefits for Castlerea and the wider area,” Paul added.

He is appealing to the public to attend tonight’s meeting to hear full details of the plans and the reason for the project.

“The path ahead will take time with a number of considerable hurdles to jump, including planning and environmental appraisal, but we are confident that with the backing of the community this is a project that will have real community benefits,” he concluded.

Finding your career path

he opening of the Central ApTvember plications Office (CAO) on No5th marks the beginning of

a new chapter for Leaving Certificate students as they take decisive steps towards achieving their career and educational goals.

Parents and guardians have an important role to play in listening to their sons and daughters, discussing options and encouraging them to explore the courses, careers and apprenticeships on offer so that they can make informed decisions with confidence.

The CAO website contains a myriad of information which can be a little daunting, but it is quite easy to navigate and there is an excellent guide for parents which covers all the important information including the application process, deadlines and much more.

As a career guidance counsellor, my first bit of advice to students is to start early, register as soon as you can and you will have ample time to explore all your options before applications close on February 1st.

It is important to know that there is a change of mind facility on CAO from May 5th until July 1st so for many courses you can change your mind many times.

There is a lot to consider when choosing a course so do discuss your ideas with family, teachers and friends and gather as much information as you can about the qualifications you will need to follow the

career you want. Focus on your key skills and aptitudes, your favourite subjects and your area of career interest.

The CAO website contains a listing of college Open Days and attending these can be a great way of gathering information and getting a ‘feel’ for college life. When attending, ask questions about the course/s that interest you and what the entry requirements are.

Of course it is important to be aware that there are different routes into a career and not everybody is ready or has the resources to leap straight into a university course.

When looking at courses, you may be tempted to consider only those offered at level 8, however do consider applying for some of the QQI level 6 and 7 courses which can lead to a more gradual entry into third level education.

PLC courses focus on specific jobs and involve one or two years of study in local Education and Training Board centres and local colleges and are therefore more easily accessible for some students. Students can progress from PLC to third level through CAO. Many Higher Education colleges (HEIs) have a quota for PLC graduates. The Tertiary Degree programme is another option developed by the Education and Training Boards (ETB’s) providing transitional pathways from further to higher education by fostering direct links with HEIs and providing a seamless transition to third level education.

An apprenticeship can also be an excellent choice where college learning is combined with workbased training. Apprentices ‘earn while they learn’ – they have an employment contract and are paid a salary for the duration of their apprenticeship training.

Three taken to hospital after crash

A road accident involving two vehicles led to three people being hospitalised. The collision occurred on the N61 at Barrybeg, Kiltoom, Co Roscommon.

Gardaí were called to the scene of the accident which occurred at about 8.30 am on Thursday morning last. A total of three occupants of the two vehicles involved were taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe as a precaution.

For all students, getting through the intense study and exam preparation can be overwhelming and many find it difficult to deal with the additional stress that comes when it’s time to make decisions for the future. Having these feelings is a normal response and it is important to acknowledge them and talk about them to parents, teachers, friends and guidance counsellors. Finding ways to relax and unwind, engaging in sport or listening to music are healthy ways to look after our mental well-being.

Everyone has different motivations for their careers and working lives and these can change over time. Career is about your life story, and it may follow many pathways as you progress through the next few years.

Colleen champions autism rights Roscommon entrepreneur Colleen Mannion, founder and CEO of All Ability Learning, addressed the Oireachtas All-Party Parliamentary Group on Autism recently.

Colleen, who has over 40 years’ experience in special education, spoke about her work with non-verbal and minimally speaking autistic students. She highlighted the importance of providing letterboards, choice systems and assistive devices to ensure every individual has the opportunity to express their voice, learning and understanding.

During her presentation, Colleen shared powerful testimonials from students and families demonstrating how communication tools unlock intelligence and independence.

“It was an honour to highlight to the committee the importance of giving every individual the basic human right of their own voice being heard,” Colleen said.

The committee also discussed broader issues currently in the news, including school placements for autistic students, new guidelines for Special Needs Assistants (SNAs), and expulsions from special schools.

We would also like to express our sincere appreciation to the Palliative Care team in Ciuin Suite, Mullingar, who cared for Dad with such compassion, dignity, and respect, and who were always available to answer our questions. Your dedication and kindness will never be forgotten.

A heartfelt thank you goes to Gerald Farrell, who helped us arrange the funeral and carried it out with such professionalism. We are deeply grateful to everyone who visited the funeral parlour to say their goodbyes and pay their respects to Dad. To Fr. Dan and Fr. Barden, thank you both very much for delivering a beautiful sermon for Dad. Your words brought us comfort and peace during this difficult time. We are also grateful to Theresa Costello for the beautiful music and songs that were sung, adding a special touch to the service.

We would like to extend a special mention to our Uncle Jim for speaking so eloquently about Dad and his life growing up. Thank you, Uncle Jim, for sharing those cherished memories.

To our family members who travelled long distances to be with us, and to those who couldn’t make it but joined us via livestream, we appreciate your support more than words can express.

Thank you to everyone who left messages of support and comfort, and to those who helped out in any way, including managing the parking and keeping the traffic flowing. Your assistance was invaluable.

If we have forgotten anyone, please know that your kindness and support have not gone unnoticed.

Three Irish-trained winners in Del Mar Horses for Courses On the international scene, there were three Irish-trained winners at the Breeders Cup in Del Mar. Aidan O’Brien trained Gstaad to win the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf under Christophe Soumillion, giving the Ballydoyle chief his 26th Group 1 of 2025 (he can still break the record of 28 held by himself).

With this win, O’Brien became the most successful trainer in Breeders’ Cup history with 21 wins, surpassing the record he held jointly with the late American trainer D Wayne Lukas.

O’Brien’s son Donnacha also got in on the act when Oisin Murphy rode Balantina to victory in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf. But the Irish story of this year’s Breeders Cup was winner Ethical Diamond, 28/1 outsider, trained by Willie Mullins and ridden by new Irish champion jockey 22-year-old Dylan Browne McMonagle, with Ballydoyle’s Minnie Hauk a disappointing 8th.

The 5-Y-O gelding finished third in a 10f maiden in Roscommon in 2023.

Four Roads girls retain U-14 title There was great excitement in Four Roads parish after the U-14 girls (pictured) retained the Division One Football Championship title. In what is a huge achievement by the girls, they’ve won both the league and championship Division One finals this year.

Roscommon Harriers AC once again did the county proud at this year’s Irish Life Dublin City Marathon on Sunday, October 26th 2025, as 20 club members took on Ireland’s most iconic road race.

In what turned out to be blustery, testing conditions, the Harriers’ yellow singlets were a familiar sight on the streets of the capital – from the leafy Phoenix Park, past Áras an Uachtaráin, through Terenure and all the way back to the cheering crowds on Merrion Square.

Leading the charge was Shane Hennelly (pictured), who ran a perfectly judged race to cross the line in 2 hours 48 minutes and 31 seconds, setting a new Roscommon Harriers club marathon record.

Shane placed 341st out of 18,488 finishers, 324th male overall, and 86th in the M40 category – an exceptional performance among a world class field. His next big

challenge will see him represent Ireland at the World Triathlon Championships in Pontevedra, Spain, next year.

Not to be outdone, Anna Dooner delivered one of the standout performances of the event, finishing in 2 hours 52 minutes and 57 seconds, breaking the Harriers’ ladies club record. Anna placed an incredible 25th woman overall, 3rd in her F35 category, and 506th out of all 18,488 finishers – a truly elite result.

Also dipping under the magical three-hour barrier were Peter Kehoe and John Fitzmaurice, who both ran superbly, while Michelle McNeela beat her personal best. There were strong runs too from Adrian Smith and Brian Tully (in his marathon debut). Wayne Donoghue, Keela Farnon, and David Hoare all came home in under four hours – with Hoare also achieving a PB.

Patsy Donegan and Brian Whitney both recorded massive personal bests, the latter improving his time by a remarkable 12 minutes. Noeleen Doorly, Eamonn Carney, and Olivia Doorly (in her first marathon) also impressed, supported by Mary Tarpey, Tara Murphy, and Brenda Hegarty who worked together to the finish. Danny Downey and Nors Mokhtar rounded out a strong Harriers turnout, each finishing with smiles and stories to tell.

The Dublin City Marathon remains one of Europe’s great races – a mix of history, heart, and humour – and the Roscommon Harriers showed once again that the spirit of the West travels well.

Some success for ‘locals’ in Connacht SOCCER: The second round games in the Connacht Cup and Shield competitions took centre stage last weekend with some good results for teams from the Roscommon & District League.

Castlerea Celtic had an impressive 5-0 home win over Sligo side Kilglass/

Enniscrone. Jay McCartney opened the scoring after five minutes when set up

by Kailin Barlow. McCartney returned the favour after the break when he provided the passes for Barlow to score two more. Sean Og Bergin and Oisin O’Farrell added one each before the end.

Ballinahown FC beat fellow Division One side Moylough ‘79 4-1 at Moylough. Oisin O’Reilly opened the scoring for the winners with Shane Allen adding a second goal. Sean Kelly pulled one back for Moylough on the half-hour mark but Ballinahown added two more.

Skyvalley Rovers failed to advance to round three when beaten at home

by Galway Premier side Maree/ Oranmore. The visitors scored after ten minutes but the home side rallied and on two occasions in the first half they had the ball in the Maree/Oranmore net only for the ‘goals’ to be ruled out. Skyvalley Rovers scored a welldeserved equaliser in the second half, through Emmett Kelly. In the second minute of time added on the visitors won a corner and Shane Cox got a vital touch in a crowded six-yard box to score the winner.

Premier side Moore United had a hard-earned but impressive 5-4 extratime win over Sligo side Calry Bohs.

Josh Lennon scored two and Charles Nevin one in normal time and Sean Fortune and Nevin (again) added two more in extra-time to seal a place in round three.

Premier side Boyle Celtic were unlucky to be beaten 3-2 after extratime away to Ballina side Conn Rangers. Michael Corrigan’s penalty gave Boyle a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

The home side score twice before Michael Corrigan added his second to send the game into extra-time.

Ballina’s Eoin Prendergast scored the decider in the second period of extratime.

In the Connacht Shield, Cloonfad United had a good 4-3 win over the Mayo side Swinford at Cloonfad.

Conor Flynn, Aidan Sloyan, Shane O’Malley and David Hennessy scored for the winners.

Glen Celtic were beaten 5-2 away to Colga FC. The Glenamaddy side were in contention for most of the game thanks to two goals by Gavin Hegarty, but Colga netted twice late on to seal it.

Moyne Villa beat Moore United’s second side 5-3 at Headford while the game between Ballaghaderreen and Ballisodare was abandoned when the Sligo team’s goalkeeper suffered a serious leg injury. Ballaghaderreen were leading 3-2 at the time (with about five minutes left to play).

St John’s Athletic B were beaten 2-1 away to Galway Hibs. Division Two side Lough Harps had a good 2-0 win over Corrib Celtic at Ballinlough.

Tiernan Murphy gave them a 1-0 lead after 28 minutes and David Frayne added a second halfway through the second half. Carrick Town drew 2-2 with Tuam side Dynamo Blues at Carrick-on-Shannon but they lost out in a penalty shootout.

Premier Division In the only game in the Premier Division, St John’s Athletic came from behind to beat Shiven Rovers 3-2 at Lecarrow.

A Stephen Francis goal gave the home side a 1-0 lead at half-time but Stephen Murray and Seamus O’Kelly had Shiven Rovers ahead early in the second half.

Cian Kelly and Daire Keenan responded with goals for the home side to secure three valuable points.

Women’s League In the Women’s League, a powerful and experienced Dunmore Town side beat a Roscommon United team who are playing their first season in the league 12-0 at Dunmore.

Credit to the losers who turn out every week despite results not going their way.

Aoife Smyth scored five, Ashling Hynes and Lily Concannon two each, and Amy Burns, Siobhan O’Grady and Sarah Cosgrove added one each.

Boyle Celtic beat Kilkerrin Utd 2-0 at Boyle. Emma Duggan and Sinead O’Donoghue scored their goals.

Ballaghaderreen FC beat Carrick Town 8-0 in a game played on the astroTurf at Gurteen. Jessica Feeney scored three and Rebecca Finan was on the mark twice.

Dunmore Town, Ballaghaderreen and Boyle Celtic are all in the title race, with Castlerea Celtic – who got the points from their game with Shiven Rovers – still in with a chance of catching the leaders.

Buccs fail to build on breakthrough win Following the promise of recent improved performances – culminating in a long-overdue win the previous weekend – Buccaneers’ display against Navan in their Energia All-Ireland League game at Dubarry Park last Saturday was hugely disappointing. The Pirates never really got going in a very flat effort as they went down 20-8 in this Division 2B encounter.

Buccaneers were collectively way off the enterprise and energy of recent outings with Meecham, Cooper and Tom Cotton being their better contributors. With back-to-back away fixtures looming, some soul-searching will have to be done following this frustrating setback.

JUNIOR 1A LEAGUE: Buccaneers and Creggs served up a compelling Bank of Ireland Connacht Junior 1A League game under the Dubarry Park floodlights on Saturday night when the hosts fully deserved their 23-19 victory over the title holders.

This was a passionate derby that kept the minds of the spectators off the raw weather. Buccs dictated the tempo for the majority of the contest with the slick and sustained endeavour of all their squad catching the visitors off guard. Jack Crampton, Sam Fogarty and Byrne stood out in the forwards battle while Colgan and Hughes were prominent in a lively backs unit.

INTERNATIONAL DUTY: Congratulations to young Buccaneers trio – Darragh Glennon, Oisin O’Donoghue and Owen Egan – who all played for Ireland U-18 Clubs team against Italy on Saturday.

Although the result did not go Ireland’s way, the three lads can be proud of their achievement.

Glennon scored a splendid try that will add to his memory of the occasion.

WOMEN’S TEAM: Buccaneers’ women’s team shipped a heavy 59-0 Connacht League defeat at home on Sunday to Sligo, the visitors proving much too strong to record their first win of the campaign.

Buccs travel to fellow strugglers Westport in the next round this Sunday, with a 1 pm kick-off.

THE LATE EGBERT MORAN: Buccaneers Rugby Football Club mourns the passing of a former captain and president with the unexpected

death of Egbert Moran, who was one of the real characters of rugby in Athlone.

The Moran family has been synonymous with rugby in the town and Egbert was involved in the club from its very early days. He played for many seasons, featuring in the Connacht Junior Cup finals of 1967 (when his late brother James was a teammate) and 1968.

Following his playing career he served in various roles at Athlone RFC, whom he captained in 1969/70, and he was honoured as President in 1987/88 when the Senior team won the Connacht Senior League title.

Buccaneers members provided a Guard of Honour at Queen of Peace Church and earlier when the funeral cortege passed Dubarry Park where flags were flown at half-mast.

Egbert will be greatly missed around the club but particularly by his wife Mary, sons Niall (current Director of Rugby at Buccaneers) and Garrett, daughter Karla and the wider family to whom heartfelt condolences are extended.

U-15s: Buccaneers U-15 ‘yellow’ team played an exciting game on Sunday against a strong Monivea outfit.

Although trailing 35-12 shortly after the break, Buccs rallied to score three converted tries but then allowed the visitors a sloppy score from the restart. Buccs rallied once more to close their arrears to 42-40 and were pounding away at the Monivea line when the referee blew the full-time whistle.

Subdued Creggs fall to Buccaneers Creggs RFC made the short journey to Athlone to take on Buccaneers RFC in Saturday’s Connacht Junior 1A league game at Dubarry Park.

Buccs’ Gearoid McDonagh scored an early penalty for a three-point lead but a fine try scored by Mikey Dunne, created by Dean O’Reilly and converted by Ronan Dowd, put Creggs ahead 7-3.

Buccaneers hit back with a converted try after 25 minutes after powerful runs by Ryan O’Meara and Jack Crampton created havoc in the Creggs defence. Buccaneers out-half, McDonagh, landed a well-struck penalty on the stroke of half-time to edge his team ahead by six points after an opening half dominated by the home team. McDonagh landed another fine penalty in the 45th minute when Creggs were penalised for a high tackle in midfield.

Creggs responded with an excellent try by Ronan Dowd following a brilliant run by centre Mark Purcell which split the home defence.

After a period of stalemate, Buccaneers extended their lead in the 71st minute when scrum-half Donnacha Connolly crossed for a try following a series of powerful drives close to the line.

In response, Creggs launched an attack which forced Buccaneers to concede a penalty try but the home team held out for a valuable 23-19 win.

Following their heroics the previous weekend against Kilfeacle this was a strangely subdued display

by Creggs with a highly motivated and effective Buccaneers squad deserving great credit for their performance.

Creggs must now regroup and prepare for the Cawley Cup final against Ballina at Galwegians Glenina grounds this Saturday with 2.30 pm kick-off.

SECONDS: Creggs 2nd team played at home in their Connacht J1B League match last Sunday afternoon against Galwegians RFC. Creggs went 3-0 ahead through a Brian Cleary penalty. Before halftime Cleary kicked a second penalty meaning Creggs led 6-0 going into the break.

eventually breaking through to score seven, putting them one point ahead.

Creggs were up to the challenge and again some great breaks by Mike Feeley and Ronan Cahill kept the home team in attack mode. A penalty was awarded to Creggs on the 10-metre line which Cleary converted, putting Creggs 9-7 ahead.

Galwegians pressed hard and a loose Creggs tackle let them in for their second try and a 12-9 lead with 10 minutes remaining. Creggs had to get a score and they duly did when Shane Maloney touched down, Cleary converting for a 16-12 lead.

There might have been an expectation that Creggs had this game secured but after some missed tackles Galwegians scored their 3rd try, converted by Ben Donnelly, giving them a 19-16 win.

WOMEN’S CONNACHT LEAGUE: Creggs senior women won their third league game after a tough encounter on Sunday against South East Galway Warriors, coming out on top 33-21. First try came from Seren Griffiths which Eabha Dowd converted for a 7-0 lead. The visitors then got in for two unanswered tries from Roisin Power to lead 14-7.

Creggs regained their composure and got back into their opponents half and again moved it wide and when Shannon Haugh made a break, she off-loaded to Seren Griffiths who got in for her second try which Eabha Dowd again converted to leave the half-time score level at 14-14.

In the second half, the visitors got back in front but Creggs levelled again. The Creggs forwards were now getting on top and some great carries by Gabrielle Kilcommons, captain Susan O’Reilly and Kelly Haugh made great ground leading to a penalty try and a red card for the visitors.

Creggs finished the game well with two tries – one from Megan Donohoe and the last by Seren Griffiths (her third of the day) – one of which was converted by Eabha Dowd to leave the final score at 33-21.

This weekend Creggs will meet OLBC/Corinthians at home in the 4th round of the league before travelling away to Ballinrobe the following week for round 5.

U-16 BOYS: Creggs RFC U-16 Boys played their first league game last Sunday. Their opponents were Monivea. Monivea won 42-7 with Fionn Healy getting the Creggs try.

This was a tough defeat for the team but it was their first outing of the season.

Buccs ultimately came away with a 38-29 win.

U-15 BOYS: Creggs RFC U-15s Boys started their league campaign on Sunday away against Westport in very blustery conditions. Creggs won 29-19. Congratulations to the team.

U-14 BOYS: Creggs RFC U-14 Boys squad welcomed Ballinasloe RFC to Creggs last Saturday for round two of the Division 1 league. Ballinasloe won 35-0 but this scoreline didn’t reflect the true picture of the Creggs’ effort. Creggs travel to Corinthians this weekend for round three of the league. We wish them well.

PLAYED FOR CONNACHT: Congrats to Creggs Youth players who last Thursday played with Connacht U-18 and U-19 teams, winning both matches against Munster in UL Limerick. Joseph McSharry and Sam Walsh both played at U-18 and Kaylum Curran and Cian Kiernan lined out with the U-19 side.

Tooreen triumph after a flying start

Four Roads’ improvement under the management of Micheál Kelly and his backroom team in 2025 was clear for all to see at King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park on Sunday last, but it was still not good enough to overcome Mayo champions Tooreen, who recorded a five-point win to advance to the provincial semi-finals.

The Roscommon champions started and finished well, but in between Tooreen were the slicker team, particularly up front, where their fullforward line of Shane Boland, Fergal Boland and Eoin Delaney contributed 0-11 of their scores on the day.

On a sunny day, when conditions for hurling were good, Four Roads burst from the traps quickly. After Conor Morris pointed in the first minute, the same player was on hand in the third minute to flick to the Tooreen net on his second attempt and put his side four points ahead.

The Mayo side slowly found their feet, and by the 13th minute there was only one point between the teams (1-2 to 0-4 in favour of Four Roads) after points from Shane Boland (2), Eoin Delaney, and Sean Kenny.

Adam Donnelly pointed for Four Roads in the 13th minute but it was to be their last score for almost 21 minutes. Eoghan Morris of Four Roads

had to retire with a serious leg injury, while Tooreen’s Daniel Huane was also forced off with an injury in that spell of the match.

As a result of those injuries, that second quarter was a very stop-start affair. Tooreen were the better side at that stage and they went in at the break leading by 0-10 to 1-4 with Conor Morris on target with two late frees for Micheál Kelly’s side.

The teams were well matched for most of the third quarter as they shared six points (all from play). The key score came in the 42nd minute – and it was a brilliant team goal. Conal Hession handled the ball three times in an incisive team move that went the

length of the field before Kenny Feeney supplied the finish to put his side six points ahead (1-13 to 1-7).

Further Tooreen points from Eoin Delaney, Fergal Boland and substitute Fionn Delaney extended the lead to nine with just seven minutes on the clock.

Four Roads stuck to their task and in fact staged a mini-rally late in the game.

Points from sub Oisin Finneran, three converted frees from Conor Morris, and a long-range effort from goalkeeper Noel Fallon, saw the margin down to four by the second minute of injurytime. But Tooreen had the last say when Shane Boland converted a late free to seal their victory.

It was a much-improved performance from Four Roads this year compared to 2024 (when Tooreen won by 10 points) but there is still a gap to bridge in terms of Roscommon’s champions succeeding in defeating the Mayo kingpins, something which has not happened since 2015.

Noel Fallon, Eamon Mulry, Conor Kelly, Conor Mulry and Conor Morris were prominent for Four Roads on the day. For Tooreen, the aforementioned Shane Boland, Fergal Boland, and Eoin Delaney were outstanding. They were well assisted by Conal Hession, Sean Kenny and Kenny Feeney. However the best player on the field was centre

half-back Oisin Greally who was in superb form all through and was an inspirational figure for his side.

Cunningham salutes Pearses’ resistance < SEAMUS DUKE

It was a relieved and happy St Brigid’s manager Anthony Cunningham who celebrated with his players and the club’s supporters on the pitch after Saturday’s replay. He began by paying tribute to Pádraig Pearses for the part they had played in two tremendous games.

“Ah you have to take your hat off to Pearses, they put up a great fight again there today. There were two great games, last week and today, and they were so much a part of it.”

Anthony wanted to commiserate with his opposite number, the Pearses team manager Frank Canning, who had lost his father during the week.

“It must have been a very tough week for Frank and we extend sympathy to him and all the Canning family. But all credit to Pearses in general. They are a super club. But look, I am delighted with our own fellas today.”

Was it a big call to decide to play 40-year-old Senan Kilbride from the start of the replay?

“Senan had played with the (Roscommon) Masters earlier on and did very well. He was training with us the last few weeks and we thought we needed something different. He looked very sharp when he came on in the drawn game and we decided to go

with him from the start today.”

The manager paid tribute to his goalkeeper Conor Carroll – and to one save in particular. “That save (from Hubert Darcy) won us the match, to be honest.

Conor was just excellent today.”

Cunningham said that the six-day turnaround since the thrilling drawn final hadn’t been a problem for the players.

“They are very fit anyway and we had no problems in that regard. We have a great strength & conditioning man in Cian O’Dea, and he has done great work with the lads. It’s a great day for the club and we have to try and build on that now” he concluded.

After producing another superb display for his team, a happy St Brigid’s team captain Brian Stack reflected on a second exciting game against Pádraig Pearses, one that resulted in that coveted county title heading for Kiltoom.

“It was probably a bit too exciting for our liking! It was turnover after turnover out there but any way you win is a good way to win. I am a bit lost for words at the minute, but I’m delighted. Just look at the scenes around here. It’s great.”

Brian was full of praise for goalkeeper Conor Carroll, who was outstanding on the day. “He was brilliant. His saves, his kickouts. He was absolutely superb today.”

Canning confirms he’s stepping down < SEAMUS DUKE

Frank Canning is to step down as manager of Pádraig Pearses following last Saturday’s defeat in the Roscommon SFC final replay.

Canning, who led Pearses to Fahey Cup success last year, has completed his agreed three-year term and says he’ll be passing the baton on now.

Speaking to the Roscommon People on Tuesday, Frank confirmed that he will be stepping down as Pearses manager now that his three-year tenure is at an end.

“I won’t be going back next year. We had a wonderful three years and I worked with some marvellous people in Pearses. There are plenty of great young players and a great club there too.

Pearses will be back, I’m sure of that” he said.

The build-up to Saturday’s replay was an emotional experience for the Pádraig Pearses manager, a member of the famous Canning family of Portumna and Galway hurling fame.

Frank’s father Seán passed away on Tuesday of last week and was laid to rest the day before the

replay.

“It was definitely a tough week but we knew that dad was sick” Frank told the Roscommon People. “We knew for eight weeks that his condition was terminal but we had great chats with him over the past few weeks. Indeed I had a pint with him only four weeks ago.

“He loved the GAA and he loved the club over anything else. He lived his life and loved to see young people getting on well. He would have wanted us to move forward and that’s what we have to do now.”

As for last Saturday’s County final replay, Canning said that Pearses simply missed too many chances.

“We missed two clear goal chances and two more as well. Over the two days (including the drawn game) we missed some great chances.

You have to take your chances at this level.

“There were two good teams there over the two days and it was just not our day. We just didn’t get the breaks and that’s the way it goes. Fair play to St Brigid’s, they are worthy champions.”

‘We just edged it in the end’ – man of the match < SEAMUS DUKE

After two outstanding performances in the finals, Roscommon and St Brigid’s goalkeeper Conor Carroll reflected on a superb win for a club that he only joined earlier this year.

“We were expecting another tough game today and that’s exactly what we got. I thought we played very well today. The conditions were tough again today but we just edged it in the end. It’s brilliant to get over the line.”

When I asked Conor about a number of spectacular saves he made during the game, he sought to play his own role down.

“Ah look, I had a bit of luck today. The lads on the team bailed me out a few times this

year… there are some days that the ball goes in the net and some days they stay out, and today they stayed out for the most part.

“This is a great club. I was welcomed here warmly from the very first day. And I am delighted for everyone behind the scenes. It’s easy for the players, but all the people in the background are the people who deserve this success.”

And looking ahead to the Connacht Club Championship?

“We will enjoy this one for a couple of days but we intend to get back to work and hopefully we will give the Connacht Club Championship a rattle over the next few weeks. Today is a super day for St Brigid’s and I am delighted.”

Carroll the springboard as St Brigid’s bounce back!

Round two of this clash of the heavyweights saw St Brigid’s emerge victors in the end, and on the balance of play in this replay at King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park on Saturday last, it was probably the right result.

It was not an epic encounter of the scale that we witnessed six days earlier, nevertheless it was another high-quality game between these two excellent teams. There were many passages of good football throughout and plenty of drama and incidents to keep the crowd entertained.

Pearses will reflect on a number of clear goal chances that they created over the course of the game. But they only took one of them, the thendefending champions being thwarted time after time by a brilliant display from the St Brigid’s goalkeeper Conor Carroll, whose inspirational saves provided his team with the platform to win the title at the other end of the field.

One incident among many captured just how important a part Carroll played in this title win by St Brigid’s. In the 20th minute, when they were leading by 1-4 to 0-5, a brilliant Pearses move saw Hubert Darcy in on goal. It looked a certain three-pointer but Carroll pulled off a sensational save to deny him.

Brigid’s swept downfield immediately and Ciarán Sugrue pointed from play. Instead of being five points ahead Pearses were now just one up. The margins are fine, but big games are often decided by moments like that.

On a fine, breezy day, there was a surprise before the throw-in as St Brigid’s announced that 40-yearold veteran Senan Kilbride would be starting the game. The club legend had come on as a sub in the closing minutes of the drawn game, but was in from the start for the replay. He hadn’t played a senior championship game for St Brigid’s since 2020. Senan went on to score a point after just five minutes and continued to play his part until he was substituted with ten minutes to go.

Pearses played with the breeze in the first half.

The opening ten minutes were evenly contested. St Brigid’s were ahead by 0-3 to 0-2 as the teams took up where they left off the previous Sunday.

Then, in the 11th minute, Pearse struck for a superb goal. The lively Jack Tumulty did the spadework and the move was brilliantly finished by Seán Canning.

Pearses were improving as the game went on but they couldn’t get past Conor Carroll again, the Brigid’s and Roscommon net-minder making outstanding saves from Eoin Colleran in the 12th minute and from Hubert Darcy in the 20th minute (as already mentioned).

St Brigid’s got a grip on proceedings after that and went on to dominate the second quarter. With Bobby Nugent and Ben O’Carroll outstanding, they reeled off seven point without reply to lead by 0-10 to 1-4. Nugent had kicked four excellent points in that period and was having his best game in some time for Anthony Cunningham’s team.

Ronan Daly thought he had scored a two-pointer in the 29th minute but his effort was tipped over the

crossbar by Carroll, meaning it just counted as a point.

It left the half-time score at St Brigid’s 0-10 Pádraig Pearses 1-5.

St Brigid’s started the second half well with points from Ben O’Carroll and Brian Derwin. Hubert Darcy replied for Pearses in the 34th minute with a smart point on the run to leave the score at 0-12 to 1-6.

In the 36th minute Conor Hand was shown a black card by referee Paddy Neilan for a drag down on a Pearses player. But despite the numerical disadvantage, it was Brigid’s who were playing the better football. Carroll made another superb save from Eoin Colleran, while at the other end they tagged on points from Ben O’Carroll, Hand (when he returned), and Paul McGrath.

The Kiltoom men looked home and hosed when Brian Derwin bundled the ball over the line for a scrappy goal in the 53rd minute. But in fairness to Pearses they never gave up hope and staged a late rally. Conor Ryan (who played well again at midfield) kicked a couple of two-point frees to reduce the margin to four as normal time ran out.

St Brigid’s had done enough, and in injury-time the sides swopped points from Ben O’Carroll and Paul Carey to complete the scoring. St Brigid’s were just more composed up front, which proved a major factor in the outcome.

There were excellent performances on both sides, and new Roscommon manager Mark Dowd and his selectors will be happy to have observed the number of young players who did well in both the drawn game and the replay.

For Brigid’s, Ruaidhrí Fallon, Brian Stack and Séan Trundle did well in defence, while Eddie Nolan worked very hard in the middle of the field. Up front for the new champions, Bobby Nugent and Ben O’Carroll were the main threats, with Conor Hand and Brian Derwin prominent at times too. The St Brigid’s talisman was Conor Carroll. Those three spectacular saves apart, his kickouts were deadly accurate once again, and he was fully deserving of his ‘man of the match’ award.

Pádraig Pearses contributed richly once again to what was one of the best county finals we have seen in many years.

It just wasn’t their day in front of goal. They have some wonderful young players in their ranks, none more so than Conor Ryan, who had another super game. Caelim Keogh, Mark Richardson and Davy Murray were prominent in defence, while in attack, Jack Tumulty, Seán Canning and Eoin Colleran were very impressive.

So the Fahey Cup will spend the winter in Kiltoom as St Brigid’s record a 19th title success. Football fans in the county will be hoping they can go on now and give the Connacht Club Championship a real go over the next few weeks. They are definitely well capable of doing that.

This ‘two-part’ county final was one that will be remembered for many years to come. Well done to both teams.

St Croan’s hoping to revisit past glories

Sherlock homes in on Rossies

The first Roscommon champions into the fray in this year’s Connacht Club Football championships will be junior kingpins St Croan’s who will face Sligo champions Cloonacool in the provincial quarter-final at King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park on Sunday at 1.30 pm.

Hopes are high this year that St Croan’s can have a good run in the provincial championship after they had a very impressive campaign in Roscommon, winning all their games comfortably.

St Croan’s are no strangers to the business end of the club championship as they reached an All-Ireland intermediate final in 2015 only to lose out to Ardfert of Kerry in the decider.

The Roscommon champions will be hoping to take up where they left off in Roscommon this year with the likes of Ross Timothy, Mike Holland, Cathal Connelly, Kevin Smyth, Ger Connaughton, Greg Grogan and Aidan Brogan all playing well during the course of their championship success.

The Sligo champions won their county title recently after a replayed final against Eastern Harps and will provide stiff opposition for Vinny Egan’s men. However, with home advantage, St Croan’s should have enough firepower to advance to the semi-final.

Prediction: St Croan’s.

Note: Roscommon intermediate champions Strokestown will travel to face Leitrim champions Allen Gaels in their provincial semi-final on the weekend of November 15th/16th. In the senior club championship, St Brigid’s will play Shamrock Gaels (London) or Ballina Stephenites, also in the semi-final, in King & Moffatt Dr Hyde Park, also over the weekend of November 15th-16th.

Former star Dublin footballer Jason Sherlock has been confirmed as a member of the new Roscommon senior football management team.

The team was ratified at a meeting of Roscommon County Board last Thursday night. New manager Mark Dowd – who succeeds Davy Burke – has been joined by Sherlock, John Rogers (Strokestown) and Iain Daly (Michael Glaveys). Former Kilkenny hurling strength & conditioning coach Mickey Comerford has also been confirmed as a member of the backroom team.

Jason Sherlock won an AllIreland senior football medal with Dublin in 1995, his first full season as an inter-county player.

He went on to play for Dublin for 15 seasons.

Sherlock was a key member of Jim Gavin’s management set-up during Dublin’s unprecedented domination of the All-Ireland SFC between 2015 and 2020. He has also served in a coaching capacity with the Westmeath senior football team in 2022 and 2023.

Big weekend for St Barry’s and St Brigid’s < SEAMUS DUKE

It’s a busy period on the LGFA scene for Roscommon county champions, with plenty of Connacht club action. First into action were junior champions Northern Harps who were defeated by Galway champions Menlough-Skehana in the Connacht final in Swinford last Saturday (2-10 to 1-10).

A superb second-half display from the Elphin-Ballinameen combination just came up short against a strong Galway outfit.

Trailing by 2-5 to 0-3 at half-time, Northern Harps set about reducing the deficit with some superb scores. Shauna McGrath and Lauren Shanagher were outstanding for the Roscommon side.

The margin was down to four with time almost up, but a super goal from Ciara Cunningham reduced the lead to just one. However, late frees converted

by Kate Screene and Chloe Flynn saw the Galway side over the line.

In the senior championship, a good second-half display from St Brigid’s saw them emerge one-point winners against Glencar-Manorhamilton in the provincial semi-final last Saturday.

Final score: St Brigid’s 3-7 GlencarManorhamilton 1-12.

Áine O’Brien saw the Roscommon side build up a lead that they protected despite a late rally from the Leitrim champions.

This coming weekend St Barry’s and St Brigid’s will be in action in Connacht finals. On Saturday, St Barry’s will face another Galway side, Caltra Cuans, in the intermediate final.

Cuans defeated Mayo champions Claremorris last weekend. St Barry’s will be hoping their great form in Roscommon will continue. They will be pinning their hopes on the likes of Erica Rogers, Shannon McGuinness, Rachel Frayne, Cara Cox and Holly Rogers to lead by example.

In the senior final, St Brigid’s face a huge task when they meet defending AllIreland champions Kilkerrin-Clonberne.

The East Galway side, who are going for their fifth All-Ireland club title in a row, are brimming with top class inter-county players, including Nicola and Louise Ward, Chloe Miskell and Olivia Divilly.

The Roscommon champions have that narrow win against GlencarManorhamilton under their belts and that should be a plus for them as they go into the match. However it would be a major shock if Niall Mackey’s side were to emerge victorious on the day, given the strength of the All-Ireland champions.

The venues for both games had not been decided at the time of writing.
