Business blow for county town
The Chairperson of Roscommon Town Team has said the Government must tackle the ongoing issue of rising energy costs “as a matter of urgency” following further business closures in the county town.
Larry Brennan was speaking to the Roscommon People following news this week that Fusion Restaurant and fashion retailer Glamorize will cease trading in the coming weeks.
Fusion, situated on Main Street, announced that it was “with a heavy heart” that it would be closing its doors from August 20th. The popular
restaurant thanked staff and valued customers for their support since opening in 2019. A post on Fusion’s social media read: “It’s been a wild ride but unfortunately we’re not able to continue in the current climate of
food inflation and energy costs”.
Meanwhile, each of the three Glamorize stores, in Castlerea, Roscommon, and Ballina, are set to close over the coming weeks as the business’ owner has decided to retire. It comes after food retailer Iceland recently announced it would be closing its Roscommon town store with the loss of 20 jobs.
Town Team Chairperson Larry Brennan said it was always sad to see local businesses closing and he called on the Government to do more to tackle the “crippling pressure” caused by the cost of living crisis. Full story on page 3.

What a week!
Huh?
I was run off my feet…
Really?
Well, it was busy…
Run off your feet?
Well, maybe it would be more accurate to say I spent much of the week sitting back, watching screens!
Not exactly run off your feet then…more like feet up!
Grandchildren
Inheritance
I have some concerns regarding my will and I would like your advice. I am a widower and made a will a few years ago leaving everything I own to my five children equally. Each of my children has children and if any of my children were to die before me I would like for my grandchildren to inherit their share. If any child of mine dies before me does that child’s share of my will pass to their children? If not who inherits their share?
Normally when a beneficiary (person receiving the inheritance) pre-deceases a Testator (person who makes a will) the gift will lapse and fail. However, an exception to this rule is contained within Section 98 of the Succession Act 1965. Section 98 provides that where a child pre-deceases a testator leaving children and such children are living at the time of the death of the testator the bequest shall not lapse.
Therefore, in your situation if your child predeceases you leaving grandchildren, the benefit that would have been received by your child is preserved and will pass to your deceased’s child’s estate.
It is important to note that the bequest will go to your deceased’s child’s estate and not necessarily to your grandchildren. The bequest will be divided in accordance with the terms set out in your deceased child’s will. Example: Your child dies before you leaving two children. She has made a will leaving her entire estate to her boyfriend. Your bequest to her will not lapse by virtue of the fact she left children but this bequest will go to her boyfriend under the terms of her will.
If you wish for your grandchildren to inherit rather than for the bequest to pass to your child’s estate then it would be important to update your will providing that such a bequest would pass to your grandchildren.

CALL FOR ACTION ON ENERGY COSTS
The Chairperson of Roscommon Town Team has said the Government must tackle the ongoing issue of rising energy costs “as a matter of urgency” following further business closures in the county town.
Larry Brennan was speaking to the Roscommon People following news this week that Fusion Restaurant and fashion retailer Glamorize will cease trading in the coming weeks.
Fusion, situated on Main Street, announced that it was “with a heavy heart” that it would be closing its doors from August 20th. The popular restaurant thanked staff and valued customers for their support since opening in 2019. A post on Fusion’s social media read: “It’s been a wild ride but unfortunately we’re not able to continue in the current climate of
food inflation and energy costs.
“We opened our doors in late 2019 and we were proud of the food offering and atmosphere that we brought to the town.
“Covid hit us in early 2020 and we pivoted to takeaway and deli and so many of you supported us and it kept us going, but the cost of living crisis/energy crisis in
2022/23 has taken its toll, and it’s time to call it a day”.
Meanwhile, each of the three Glamorize stores, in Castlerea, Roscommon, and Ballina, are set to close over the coming weeks as the business’ owner has decided to retire.
It comes after food retailer Iceland recently announced it would
be closing its Roscommon town store with the loss of 20 jobs.
Town Team Chairperson Larry Brennan said it was always sad to see local businesses closing and he called on the Government to do more to tackle the “crippling pressure” caused by the cost of living crisis.
“It’s very disappointing to see any business closing. Fusion was a top class restaurant and a very important part of the night-time economy here in Roscommon while Glamorize was a very popular shop serving a niche market,” he said.
“The high cost of energy is crippling lots of businesses and leading to closures across the country. While the Government has promised to address the energy crisis and cost of living crisis in the Budget, something really needs to be done as a matter of urgency,” he concluded.
Missing Castlerea child is found safe and well
Gardaí have confirmed that a nine-month-old girl who had been reported missing from Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, has been located safe and well. At the time of Gardaí issuing an appeal for information, Sinita Ward had been last seen at 9.55 am on Monday, July 17th in Castlerea. She was believed to have been in the company of a female relative. An Garda Síochána had concerns for the little girl’s wellbeing at that point, but on Friday afternoon last they confirmed that the baby girl had been found. The Gardaí thanked the public and media outlets for their assistance in locating Sinita.

Keadue Tidy Towns 5K Run/ Walk
The annual Keadue Tidy Towns 5k Fun Run/ Walk will take place on Friday, August 4th in Keadue.
This year’s event is in aid of Keadue Tidy Towns and Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Registration takes place at 7 pm in Keadue Hall and the run/walk starts at 7.30 pm. Refreshments/prizes in St Ronan’s Hall afterwards. All are welcome to participate.
Bobs’ TikTok account, which has garnered almost 500k views in just three days, shows Mr. Connaughton meeting Limerick man John, who has been homeless for around seven months. In the video, the barber asks John if he would be comfortable with
him giving him a haircut to maybe help him “look and feel a bit better”.
While getting his hair cut, John spoke to the local barber about his life story and how he became homeless. He also spoke about resources for the homelessness being thinly stretched, with the fact that several hundreds of people are availing of soup kitchens making it difficult to get food at times, and limited space in shelters meaning he often has to sleep rough.
At the time of writing, the video of the interaction has been viewed almost half a million times on TikTok, also receiving a lot of attention on Facebook and Instagram, with many praising Mr. Connaughton for the kind gesture and for helping to shine a light on the issue of homelessness.
Robbie Connaughton established Barber Bobs Barbers in Monksland back in 2012, and the shop offers a range of men’s grooming services, such as haircuts, hot towel shaves, and beard maintenance. For more information on Barber Bobs, visit barberbobs.ie, or find them on social media.
McDermott welcomes local river works
Local Fianna Fáil councillor Marty McDermott has welcomed recent works at the River Hind and River Jiggy, aimed at alleviating flooding in Roscommon town.
Speaking to the Roscommon People earlier this week, Cllr McDermott said: “It’s fantastic to see that cleaning out of the River Hind and River Jiggy has commenced. This is the second phase of this work.
“This issue was raised with me since I was elected and I thank the County Council for working with me on both projects. This will be of great benefit to the local residents, businesses, and surrounding areas of our town, who in the past have been affected badly by flooding”.

FF confirms three for Roscommon MD race
Fianna Fáil have confirmed three candidates will run for the party in the Roscommon Municipal District in next year’s local elections following a selection convention held at the Abbey Hotel on Wednesday of last week.
The three candidates selected are outgoing councillors Paschal Fitzmaurice and Marty McDermott and well-known Roscommon town publican Larry Brennan. Mr. Brennan will hope to fill the void left by Cllr. Orla Leyden, who previously announced that she won’t be contesting the next local election.
All three candidates addressed the gathering, and said they were honoured to be nominated.
Mr Brennan, Chairperson of both the local Town Team and Roscommon and District Vint-
ners Federation, has previously run in local elections for Fianna Fáil.
Cllrs McDermott and Fitzmau rice said they had worked hard during their time in office, and felt they always tried their best for the public.
All candidates pledged to work together to achieve 100 per cent success in next year’s elections.
In his address, Senator Eugene Murphy, who chaired the con vention, said there was plenty of positive news to take to the door steps of Roscommon.
“Since this Government came to power in 2020 up to €70 mil lion has been invested in the mid-Roscommon area and that is not accounting for farm grants, etc,” he said.
“I am glad for instance that Fianna Fáil are investing heavily in schools in Roscommon town
and district. There has been significant money for the Food Hub in Castlerea and a massive allocation of sports grants throughout this region.
“You, Fianna Fáil councillors and candidates, have been very much to the fore in this regard
and you’re more than entitled to include this on your canvas cards”.
Concluding, Senator Murphy urged candidates to work together though, he said, “a little bit of competition was no harm”.
“I want to wish outgoing Cllr
Orla Leyden well and respect her decision not to go forward on this occasion. I am also delighted to see family members present with our three candidates; they need your support and loyalty.
“I want to thank our Chairman
and National Executive for their sterling work for the party. I also wish to congratulate Cllr John Keogh on his elevation to the Chair of Roscommon County Council and wish him well for the next year”.
Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council Cllr John Keogh briefly addressed the delegation, as did Senator Neil Blaney, who is seeking the Fianna Fáil nomination to run in the European election next year. Local Fianna Fáil Chairperson P Burke also thanked members for the excellent response to a recent party draw.
Senator Murphy said the party was confident it would retain its three seats in the Roscommon Municipal District. The local elections are due to take place in June 2024.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK
THURSDAY More gardaí needed
I’m not convinced Dublin is more dangerous than other European capitals, but one thing is clear: it has become more unsafe in recent years –or at the very least that perception has now taken hold.
The phenomenon of people filming assaults and then posting the footage online has obviously added to the sense that Dublin can be dangerous, and has certainly put the issue into the spotlight. Perhaps random and unprovoked attacks went on in the past, and just weren’t brought to wider public attention (before the social media era). Still, I think the anecdotal ‘evidence’ is pretty clear: violent attacks are on the increase, and Dublin is less safe than it used to be.
Last week I made the point that the RTE pay scandal would move on, that something else would take its place. That new ‘story’ is public anger over acts of thuggery in Dublin, the news cycle currently dominated by the fallout from the vicious assault on an American tourist who was set upon by a gang of youths.
The fact that the attack happened close to Store Street Garda station has added to a now-established narrative: that there are not enough gardaí on the beat, and that thugs can brazenly do what they like.
With people now fearful, every effort must be made to restore law and order. We need more gardaí on the beat in Dublin, and we need these thugs that are besmirching our capital city’s reputation to be faced down. Longer sentences on conviction would be welcome too.
FRIDAY Percy French Festival
The annual Percy French Festival, held in the beautiful grounds of Castlecoote House, was a great success. I had the honour of being Master of Ceremonies for all three days. Guest speakers included Professor Luke Gibbons, Dr Martin Mansergh,
Paul Kingsnorth, and renowned journalist Mary Kenny. We were also joined on Friday by Senator Ronan Mullen.
The festival certainly lived up to its reputation as a forum for informed social and cultural discussion. See Alannah Healy’s column on page 16.
SATURDAY Rovers Return
As brutal as the weather was, there was still a great buzz at the Shiven Rovers grounds outside Newbridge today, where the Roscommon District Youth Soccer League Sevens Finals took place.
The rain lashed down mercilessly as boys and girls from a number of clubs lined out in the various deciders. All the young players in action excelled in what were awful conditions. Well done to all involved.
The other thing that struck me (on my second visit there this year) was the excellence of the facilities at Shiven Rovers… including several
pitches, and an impressive two-storey clubhouse. There was a large crowd there today and the standard of organisation was excellent, from the stewards overseeing the parking to those involved inside the grounds. The Shiven facilities really are of the highest quality, and a credit to the club.
SATURDAY NIGHT
Go to bed…or else!
Parents to small children in households around the country tonight: “It’s time for bed, off you go…”
Children: “But we’re on school holidays! One more hour, please, please?”
Parents: “Okay, but you have to sit through all of Up for the Match…”
Children: “Goodnight!”
SUNDAY
In praise of Limerick
At the start of today’s All-Ireland SHC final I would have been happy
MONDAY/TUESDAY Dormant lawnmowers…
There was a large attendance at the emergency meeting of the recentlyformed Roscommon BOG (Badly overgrown gardens) Club, held at a secret location last night.
Visibly upset (and visibly covered in wet grass), the chairperson explained why the meeting had been called.
“The weather has been so dire, it’s been almost impossible to get the grass cut – as a community, we’re very concerned about this sudden ‘growth’ in the number of overgrown gardens”.
A man who identified himself as ‘Patrick’ – because it’s his name –spoke next.
“The last time I was able to cut the grass in our garden, Ryan Tubridy was odds-on to be next President of Ireland” he lamented.
enough if Kilkenny dethroned defending champions Limerick. After all, most neutrals eventually tire of a team or individual dominating a sporting competition for too long. But as today’s good (not classic) final progressed, I began to enjoy Limerick’s relentless march to further glory. As their gladiators swept to another stunning success, I was cheering them on (no disrespect to Kilkenny).
Why? Because, like many neutrals, I’m happy to trade dissatisfaction over one team’s long-term dominance with an appreciation that we are privileged to be witnesses to greatness, to feats which will be spoken of by generations to come.
As John Kiely’s warriors coasted to the four-in-a-row, many neutrals were probably quite happy they hadn’t been dethroned. Until some team can match Limerick on the big day, they are there to be admired, marvelled at, appreciated; a team of legends, one that’s intent on rewriting the history of hurling.
Next to address the meeting was an elderly man who in normal circumstances unfailingly mows the lawn every Thursday, before then going to the pub for a couple of what he considers to be well-earned pints.
“This summer, due to the horrible weather, I haven’t been able to use the lawnmower since mid-June” he lamented.
A neighbour sympathised. “You must miss the pints”.
“Oh no, I still go out for the pints, it’s important to maintain what one can of one’s routine” the elderly man added, glancing slightly nervously at his wife.
There were more harrowing stories. One person said he was so desperate, he had tried to cut the lawn on a wet day, but his lawnmower had begun to make loud, grunting noises. “It woke the baby in the house next door”. The following day he tried again, and while his lawnmower worked, the baby in the house next door began to make loud, grunting noises. On Tuesday, a breakthrough, with some rare sunshine. Relieved, the chairperson sent a WhatsApp to all in the club, asking if they were happy to disband. Nobody replied, as they were all out mowing their lawns.

Shane Tiernan confirmed as new Council Chief Executive
Leitrim native Shane Tiernan’s appointment as the new Chief Executive of Roscommon County Council was confirmed at the July meeting of the local authority on Monday last.
Mr. Tiernan, the County Council said, was the preferred candidated “following a competitive recruitment process conducted by the Public Appointments Service”.
Speaking on the appointment, Cathaoirleach Cllr. John Keogh said Mr Tiernan had been successful from a strong field of candidates and “has ably proved himself to date”.
“I, along with my fellow councillors, want to congratulate Shane and wish him continued success where we look forward to working with him and his executive team in continuing to deliver quality public services to the citizens of Roscommon,” the Cathaoirleach remarked.
Cllr Keogh’s sentiments were echoed across the Chamber as members expressed their satisfaction with Mr Tiernan’s appointment.
Addressing the meeting, the new Chief Executive said he was “absolutely humbled” by the kind words and “honoured and privileged” to receive the full support of members.
He also praised councillors for their work on behalf of the county, acknowledging the “difficult environment” for public representatives created by social media. He also paid tribute to Roscommon County Council staff including in-

FRANK BRANDON
FRANK BRANDON’S unique take on life ...
Action, not soundbites, needed to address anti-social behaviour in Dublin
Assault on tourist revived memory of my own experience
Our man Frank on his own experience (a long time ago) of being the victim of a random attack; Frank goes down ‘Nostalgia Street’ and revisits the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem… and celebrates the enduring appeal of a night (or two) in good company in the pub!
The year was 1968. A young bank clerk and a male friend of his went for a few pints on a
Friday evening after finishing work, to a pub on Francis Street in inner city Dublin.
As the duo were leaving the pub, they were set upon by a group of youths, some of whom had been in the pub and some of whom were waiting outside. While one of the pair made their escape, the other one was pretty badly beaten up and ended up in hospital for a few days. It’s safe to say that if it hadn’t been for the intervention of a passing taxi driver, the result could have been an awful lot worse; the completely unprovoked attack could easily have left the victim seriously injured, or even dead. More than 50 years later, I remember every detail of the assault. I can still feel the punches and kicks as they struck my almost defenceless body – to this day I am very proud that I managed one left hook that may have broken the nose of one of the five assailants.
Fast-forward to July 2023, when a visitor to our capital city, American Stephen Termini, left his Talbot Street guesthouse soon after 10 pm, and was seriously assaulted around the corner in Store Street, suffering what have frighten-
ingly been described as life-changing injuries.
Despite the words of Minister for Justice Helen McEntee, who says the streets of Dublin are safe, the general feeling among inner city residents is that most of them are living in fear of the gangs that are terrorising civilians, shopkeepers, and restaurant owners. Everyone points to the fact that we have around 1,000 less gardaí in the country than before Covid, and they all advocate an increased Garda presence on the ground – not only in Dublin, but all over Ireland.
The Government has promised to act immediately, but as we all know, words are cheap, and in this case action must be taken immediately. All I can say is it’s a very sad situation that 55 years after my own attack, the streets of Dublin are still prone to being as dangerous as ever. What tourist in their right mind would want to venture out alone in our capital city? Let’s hope the words of Taoiseach Leo Varadkar (who has promised action) are not just another hollow soundbite.
The joy of being able to socialise again…
I have to admit that I seldom go out on two consecutive nights anymore, as the truth is that my body is no longer able for such a level of ‘punishment’. But last weekend was an exception – I found myself out socialising on both Friday and Saturday night.
Fond memories of Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem
As I sheltered from the non-stop rain during the week, I happened to tune in to an old Nationwide programme, one that had been aired in 2004, and which featured the great folk and ballad singer Liam Clancy of the famous Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem group.
The Clancys were born in Carrick-on-Suir, where they spent their early years before emigrating to the United States. There, they had an extraordinarily successful musical career, becoming one of Ireland’s best known and most popular ballad groups. Famed for wearing traditional Aran jumpers, they were at their most popular in the 1960s, with a huge following in both Ireland and America.
At their peak, they played to
full houses every St Patrick’s Day in the world famous Carnegie Hall, an iconic venue that holds almost 4,000 people. The Nationwide programme had Liam going back to the Tipperary town he grew up in, and we met several people who played their part in making Carrick the town it is today.
One such person was the renowned cyclist Sean Kelly, a native of the town and a man who is probably the most revered and respected of the many successful cyclists that Ireland has produced through the years.
Among the many great things he achieved in his career, one of the biggest was the role he played in bringing the Tour de France
to Ireland in 1998, when, during the two days of racing, the Tour went through Carrick on its way from Dublin to Cork, attracting huge crowds to Kelly’s home town.
As for Liam Clancy, after the Clancy Brothers finished up he had his own very successful career along with Tommy Makem. I remember going to see them many years ago in Glenamaddy’s Sound of Music. By then, he was a fabulous storyteller as well, and the pair of them went down a storm in Glenamaddy.
They are all gone from this world by now, but the music of the Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem will forever be played where Irish folk congregate.
On Friday night it was for the tenth anniversary celebrations of Castlecoote Lodge, with the Leyden family welcoming a large crowd of regulars and well-wishers to their popular watering hole. There were loads of free draws for different prizes, lots of finger food, and mighty craic generally, but for me, it was particularly great to have live entertainment back and to see people dancing to the lovely lively music that Gerry Keenan was providing. Among the attendees I met was Terry Leyden’s brother, Joe, who belted out a couple of country classics for us and proved himself to be an excellent singer. I also met John Williamson, who told me he lives just down the road from the Lodge.
All told, it was a wonderful night’s fun. Congratulations to Terry and Mary and the Leyden family on ten very successful years – here’s to many more!
Then on Saturday evening, Creggs footballers played a very competitive challenge game in an absolute downpour against near-neighbours Williamstown. While we lost by a few points, it was a proper battle, and also good practise for the upcoming championship games. Afterwards, I adjourned to Mikeen’s, where Conor Harkin and a couple of
friends were performing, and they too put on a brilliant show – everyone lucky enough to be there really enjoyed their beautiful music.
My overriding feeling was that having had so much misery and restrictions during nearly three years of Covid, it was just wonderful to see people out enjoying themselves once more. I, for one, had two great nights out. Long may it last!
And finally…
Another sign that things are back to normal post-Covid is the huge increase in air traffic lately. Mind you, the desperately high temperatures, along with the wildfires raging in many parts of the world, are changing flight plans for lots of families, and it seems there are loads of last-minute cancellations.
That said, there are a lot of people from the wider region currently enjoying holidays abroad, from the US and Spain, to Prague and the beautiful Lanzarote, to many more locations.
The good news for at least some of them is that the turf is still in the bog, and hopefully will be ready to bring home when they get back. If it stays the way it is weather-wise here in Ireland as I write, they may well need to bring home a boat!

Murphy welcomes funding boost for State-funded home support providers
Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed confirmation from Minister Stephen Donnelly and Minister Mary Butler that increased funding has been secured for home support providers, to ensure that carers are paid appropriately and to help address some of the key issues impacting recruitment and retention in the sector.
State-funded home support is delivered directly by the Health Service Executive (HSE) and by service providers in the community and voluntary, and private sectors. Home support services that are not provided directly by the HSE are procured through a tender process. A new Home Support Tender process is currently close to finalisation and due to be in place by August.
The local Fianna Fáil Senator said, “Promoting care in the community for older people and improving access to home support is a priority for Fianna Fáil in Government.
“This revised rate will give certainty and stability to the sector and help make caring a more viable career option and will help maintain the high volumes of service delivery and reduce waiting times for home support.
“It will ensure that home support carers are paid appropriately, and I am confident that it will help address some of the key recruitment and retention challenges in the sector”.
Power struggles!
Kerrane highlights energy costs
Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has warned of a possible spike in disconnections as high energy costs continue to cripple households in Roscommon.
Recently released figures from the Commission of the Regulation of Utilities (CRU) reveal that there are now more than 400,000 households in arrears across the State.
Commenting on the latest figures, Deputy Kerrane pointed the finger directly at the Government and said the cost of living crisis continues to play havoc across Roscommon and Galway.
“The figures are shocking. They are the inevitable consequence of a government that fails to act, while allowing energy companies to run roughshod over consumers,” she said.
“Behind these staggering figures are the ordinary workers and families who are facing the deeply distressing situation of being unable to afford to live in rip-off Ireland. And due to the actions of this government, there
Naughten elected as new Cathaoirleach of Northern and Western Regional Assembly
Roscommon Councillor John Naughten was elected as Cathaoirleach of the Northern and Western Regional Assembly (NWRA) at the Assembly’s AGM, held in Roscommon on the 21st of July.
Councillor Naughten is one of the two Roscommon members of the NWRA. The membership of the NWRA is drawn from elected members across the region’s local authorities (Galway City and county, Roscommon, Leitrim, Sligo, Donegal, Monaghan, Mayo and Cavan) in proportion to the population of each county.
On his election to the role, Councillor Naughten thanked the Assembly members for their support and stated he was looking forward to the year ahead. He also acknowledged the progressive work of the outgoing Cathaoirleach, Councillor David Collins from Galway.
The new Cathaoirleach acknowledged the challenges facing the region at this time and “the need for support to improve areas such as infrastructure and transportation”. He also referred to “the unique opportunities that the Northern and Western re-
gion offers as a place for people to live and thrive”.
Sligo Councillor Declan Bree was also unanimously elected as Leas-Cathaoirleach of the Assembly for the next twelve months.
Congratulating the new Cathaoirleach and LeasCathaoirleach, Director of the Assembly Denis Kelly thanked the members for their work during this exciting time for the NWRA as the regional body
launches more schemes under the EU co-funded Northern and Western Regional Programme and continues with the implementation of the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy for the region.
is no light at the end of the tunnel”.
The Sinn Féin TD said that energy costs have more than doubled in the last two years in Ireland and that this had led to “insurmountable and unsustainable levels of debt”.
“It is patently clear that the Government has not done enough to protect workers and families from rip-off energy costs here,” she said.
“This is on top of people in Roscommon and Galway already coming under huge pressure due to sky-high rents, rising mortgage interest, huge grocery costs and childcare bills”.
Urging the Government to “get to grips” with the situation, Deputy Kerrane concluded:
“They must heed Sinn Féin calls to hold energy companies to account and to address Ireland’s rip-off energy bills. Without urgent and appropriate intervention, ordinary workers and families in Roscommon and Galway will continue to suffer”.

Community mourns death of former businessman and GAA star
There was widespread sadness throughout the county last weekend at news of the untimely death of former businessman and GAA star, Mark O’Gara, who passed away at Portiuncula Hospital after a short illness.
A native of Ballintubber, Mark was a very talented footballer who quickly became a regular for St. Croan’s. At age 17 he was a prominent member of the team that won the junior championship in 1965. In the final against Oran, he scored 1-5 in a ‘man of the match’ display. He played for St Croan’s for many years and was involved again in 1978 as his beloved club won the intermediate tile.
Needless to say Mark’s talent didn’t go un-
noticed at county level and he was an integral part of the Roscommon team that won the All-Ireland U-21 championship in 1966, beating Kildare by a point in the final. Indeed, he played again in the 1969 U-21 decider as Roscommon went down to Antrim. He also played Sigerson Cup football for UCG.
Mark was also a gifted handballer and won a number of All-Ireland titles with his friend and fellow Roscommon footballer Pat Clarke. After he retired from playing, Mark was a prominent member of the St Coman’s Handball Club in Roscommon town for many years.
Mark was the proprietor of the very popular Cosy Bar in Castlerea for a number of
years before the O’Gara family moved to Roscommon town.
I knew Mark personally over many years and when he moved to the county town we became neighbours. He was a great character and a lovely man to chat to. He loved the GAA and always took a big interest in what was going on, even during his recent illness. Just a couple of months ago he attended the Roscommon-Sligo game in Dr Hyde Park and was in great form as he met up with old friends and acquaintances. He was one of the nicest people you could hope to meet. Sincere condolences to his wife Stella, sons Daragh and Gerard, sisters, brother, further relatives and many friends. May he rest in peace.
will now have even greater resources to carry out their role. Civil Defence provides a valuable and professional service, providing back-up support to emergency services as well as highly skilled support at public events and activities”.

Gleeson opens Boyle Arts Festival Events
to continue this weekend
The annual Boyle Arts Festival (BAF) was officially opened last Thursday at King House by Academy Award nominated actor, Brendan Gleeson. It was reportedly the “biggest crowd ever for a BAF launch”, with festival committee member Brendan McGee commenting that they were delighted to have such large crowds turn out on the day. Mr. Brendan Gleeson, who has ties to Boyle and has been a longtime supporter of the event, was of course an extremely popular special guest with those in attendance.
The official opening was marked with a gala parade through the town. The festival continues over the coming days. There is a wide range of attractions on offer, including musical performances, art exhibitions, poetry readings, drama acts, and a number of special talks before the festival finishes up on this Saturday, July 29th. For more information on this year’s Boyle Arts Festival and the many different events taking place, visit boylearts.com, or find the festival on social media.
Tulsk History Society to hold Percy French Exhibit

The society have teamed up with Philip Sheppard of Sheppard’s Auction House (in Durrow, Co. Laois) to present the first ever exhibit of Percy French
paintings in Tulsk, French’s native village. The centrepiece of the exhibition will be the unveiling of a beautiful antique cabinet that French once owned and which features panels painted with landscape images that French himself applied.
Philip Sheppard will give a talk on the day about Percy, the artist and the man, after Council-
lor Liam Callaghan unveils the cabinet at 1 pm. Entry is free and doors open at 12.15 pm. The history society are currently looking for any books or other memorabilia associated with Percy French to exhibit on a stand on the day, and would be very grateful for any contributions (to be returned after the exhibition).
To temporarily donate anything, please email historytulsk@gmail.com or call Jody on 086 3384850. The next edition of the society’s bulletin, The Tulsk Morning Howl, will be available at local outlets at the beginning of August and will be a Percy French special to mark the occasion.

Speaking following the meeting, ICSA president Dermot Kelleher said a priority task is to deliver transparency on the fifth quarter.
“This is the key to unlocking the unfairness in the food chain and to understanding why the beef and lamb food chains are not delivering a fair price to the primary producer,” he said.
“The Bord Bia tracker would suggest that, over the past year, the value of offal and hide has been worth in the range of 41c to 53c/kg carcass equivalent. The problem is that Bord Bia estimates are based on USDA (United
States Department of Agriculture) data, which may or may not properly reflect the values in the European context.
“Nevertheless, as Bord Bia acknowledges, the offal values are reflective of international markets. Moreover, the potential to add value to the fifth quarter is very much already in place in the Irish processing sector, with links to energy, cosmetics, and pet food”.
Mr Kelleher said that if we accept that 50c/kg is the value, this would suggest that offal alone is delivering €180/head to the average carcass of 360kg.
“Farmers do not get paid directly for this. On the other hand, ICSA is adamant that there is enough data to suggest that beef processing and retailing
‘Focus on improving beef merit!’
ICSA Beef Chair Edmund Graham has said there needs to be a renewed focus on beef merit of calves born to the dairy sector if farmers are to have any chance of finishing the animal in a financially viable and environmentally sustainable way.
“If the genetic beef merit is not there and we cannot see that daily liveweight gain closer to 1kg then there is no efficiency – no financial efficiency, and no environmental efficiency,” he said.
“Put simply, it is a bad investment on every front. It makes no financial sense to spend exorbitant sums on feed to finish inefficient cattle, nor is it possible to finish these animals earlier as we are being encouraged to do”.
Mr Graham said he believed the situation is worsening and called on Teagasc, the Government and the dairy industry to work with beef producers to solve the issue.
ICMSA want payment dates ‘front and centre’
Speaking following the latest meeting on Farmers’ Charter negotiations, Deputy President of the ICMSA Denis Drennan said his association want payment dates ‘front and centre’ in discussions, accusing the Department of Agriculture of avoiding the seriousness of the issue.
“It is absolutely up to the Department to get its house in order as soon as possible and get these payments processed in line with previous years,” he said.
“Just as an example of how these payments
INHFA seeks tax exemptions for environmental schemes
The Irish Natura & Hill Farmers Association (INHFA) are seeking a full tax exemption for all payments farmers receive under the various environmental schemes in their Budget submission.
In pressing the case for these exemptions, National President Vincent Roddy called for all payments made to farmers under schemes such as ACRES and the new Eco-scheme to be “disregarded for tax purposes”.
“In May 2019 Dáil Éireann declared a climate and biodiversity emergency. With this declaration came promises of funding to help deliver the desired outcomes,” added the INHFA President.
are both deriving margins from the beef,” he said.
The ICSA President said that this was only one of the many items discussed with the regulator.
“ICSA welcomes the appointment of the regulator. We recalled that transparency in the food chain and the need for a regulator were the first thing we asked for when we met Phil Hogan on his appointment as EU Commissioner,” he said.
“In an ideal world, there would have been a pan-European regulator but the political realities in Brussels limited him to the Unfair Trading Practices Directive. Nonetheless, this has paved the way for the Irish regulator and the Government must provide adequate support to make this work”.
FARMING DESK
affect the whole picture, we know that cattle prices improve when the payments are made and the September and October period is critical for farmers who sell weanlings in particular. That’s just one aspect of why we need concrete commitments on dates and then delivery on those commitments,” he concluded.
INHFA want EU funding for sheep sector
The Irish Natura & Hill Farmers have called on Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue to prioritise the sheep sector in a recent support package announced by the EU Commission. The additional funding, they say, can be targeted at farmers impacted by adverse climate events, high input costs, and diverse market and
“Unfortunately, some four years on, we see an underfunded Agri-environment scheme in ACRES and a redirection of direct supports, to deliver improved environmental ambition through the Eco-scheme”.
Mr Roddy went on to say that it was clearly essential that additional funding be prioritised to support and recognise the costs and burden on farmers.
“On this basis, we are also seeking an annual payment of €300/ha in recognition of the financial burden associated with the SAC and SPA land designations,” he said.
“However, in providing a tax disregard for both ACRES and the Eco-scheme payments, we can further reward the environmental ambition of our farmers”.
trade related issues.
Ireland has been allocated a total of €9.5 million and this can be complemented with up to 200 per cent in national funding.
INHFA’s newly-elected National Chair Pheilim Molloy stressed the need to support a sector, which he said, “had taken a hammering over the last year”.
“Since early spring the INHFA have outlined the need for urgent support and detailed how a direct payment through the sheep census figures submitted by farmers last February as an obvious and effective payment route. This need for direct support was also part of our recent Budget submission,” he concluded.
Minister wants European input on markets
Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue emphasised the need for European-wide solutions to support farmers in this ongoing period of uncertainty, ahead of Tuesday’s EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels.
“We continue to face particular uncertainty in relation to the market situation for crops, with the impact of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including Russia’s recent withdrawal from the Black Sea Grain Initiative, further compounded by recent weather events and continuing high input costs,” he said.
“It is vital to ensure that European-wide solutions, which preserve and maintain the integrity of the Single Market and which are based on close consultation, are found to address any difficulties on agricultural markets, and to address global food security concerns”.

Kerrane: Minister must engage on shallow cultivation
Sinn Féin spokesperson for Agriculture, Claire Kerrane has called on Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue to engage with representatives from the tillage and contracting sectors, following requests for an extension to the shallow cultivation period due to poor weather conditions.
A submission was made by the Association of Farm & Forestry Contractors in Ireland (FCI) to the Minister this week, to request an extension of the period for shallow cultivation or sowing a crop after combine harvesting.
In their submission the FCI referenced difficult weather conditions, including heavy rainfall, which have impacted on harvesting and straw management and stubble cultivation.
Speaking yesterday (Wednesday), Deputy Kerrane said: “We know that tillage farmers and contractors have faced significant
challenges in recent weeks, due to poor weather conditions.
“Representatives from the sector, including FCI and Irish Grain Growers, have referenced the difficult circumstances many farmers and contractors have been facing as a result of heavy rainfall and the impact this has had on their ability to meet shallow cultivation and crop sowing deadlines.
“I understand there is serious concern that deadline dates will be missed as a result of weather conditions, which is why this extension has been sought.
“July has been the wettest on record and the Minister should recognise this, to avoid putting farmers and contractors under even greater pressure.
“I would urge Minister McConalogue to immediately engage with contracting and tillage representatives, to ensure a solution can be found as soon as possible”.

Athlone Chamber President’s tenure ends
Chairman and President of Athlone Chamber of Commerce Alan Shaw stood down at the the Chamber’s recent AGM following three years in the position.
Alan was first elected President in July 2020 and thanked the board for electing him over the past three years.
Addressing the AGM, the outgoing President said: “The last three years has brought a lot of change to the Chamber, but with the continued growth in our membership we are stronger than ever.
“The support from Westmeath County Council has enabled the Chamber to fund many new projects to help local businesses and act as a voice for them at local and national level.
“I am also mindful that working alongside our Chamber colleagues in Mullingar has been an important change in recent years and it is key that this collaborative approach should continue”.
At the AGM, board members expressed heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to Alan Shaw for his invaluable contributions and outstanding leadership throughout his tenure. During his term, Athlone Chamber of Commerce achieved remarkable milestones, creating an environment conducive to business growth and fostering meaningful connections among our members.
“We extend our sincere thanks to Alan for his exceptional leadership, dedication, and unwavering commitment to Athlone Chamber of Commerce and the local business community,” said Tommy Hogan, CEO of Athlone Chamber of Commerce.

Water works to aid economic development
Uisce Éireann has said that ongoing works on the Roscommon Town Main Drainage Scheme will “provide a platform for future population growth and economic development”.
Works in partnership with Roscommon County Council are progress, the body says, with expected completion in September.
A statement from Uisce Éireann read: “This will include permanent reinstatement of all road surfaces affected by the project. The project when completed will help safeguard the environment and provide for future growth and development in the town.
“This project represents a further growth and development in the town. This project represents a further step in the continued delivery of improvements to the wastewater network in Roscommon.
“When completed, the €20 million project will reduce the risk of sewer flooding in Roscommon town and improve water quality in the River Jiggy and River Hind. It will also increase the capacity of the sewer network, providing a platform for future population growth and economic development”.
FDI wants energy support extension
Food Drink Ireland (FDI), the Ibec group representing the food and drink sector, has called on the Government to extend the energy support schemes for business due to on-going cost competitiveness pressures. The latest quarterly business monitor from FDI has shown ongoing challenges for indigenous food and drink manufacturers. “The reality of high input business costs will be further exacerbated by the introduction of border controls in Great Britain, from October 31st. It is essential that Government help the sector offset high energy costs by extending the two energy support schemes (TBESS and UECS) to the end of 2023 and amending the qualification criteria so more companies can avail of the supports,” said Jonathan McDade, Deputy Director of Food Drink Ireland.

2023 Percy French Festival – an informative and engaging experience
Let’s talk about ...
Alannah Ita Healy
Last week, I had the opportunity to attend this year’s Percy French Festival, which was running for its 15th year on the beautiful grounds of Castlecoote House.
The locally-based festival is held annually in celebration of Roscommon native William Percy French, who lived from 1854 to 1920. A ‘Renaissance man’ of sorts, French was, in addition to the often humorous song-writing he is perhaps most associated with, famed for his art, political satire, and writing, and the festival honours this diverse legacy of his by organising an exciting and wide-ranging programme of lectures and entertainment each year. The range of topics covered by the speakers this year was extensive, with a broad focus on exploring the Ireland of the past, the changing Ireland of today, and indeed what might lie ahead for us as we continue into the future.
Many of the festival’s more historically-focussed talks were centred around early Christian Ireland and its origination, and while these were all certainly very informative discussions in their own right, the one I found myself most interested in placed a spotlight on a much earlier period. The very first speaker, Mike McCarthy, spoke about Connaught’s ancient capital – the Rathcroghan site in Tulsk, which predates Christianity’s arrival to the country by thousands of years. This period of Irish history is, I think, a particularly interesting one to learn about. As McCarthy’s talk highlighted, there is a wealth of ancient history and customs to be explored from this time, and I feel it’s a period with specific significance in the context of our unique cultural identity; it’s the era we can trace our rich expanse of Irish mythology and folklore back to, and the era that gave us the iconic, intricate Celtic artwork and symbolism that remains so heavily associated with Ireland to this day.
Another point of interest for me among the more historically-focussed talks was Professor Luke Gibbons’s lecture, ‘Aliens of the West: Roscommon Women Writers and the Revival’. It was truly illuminating to learn about the lives and careers of these writers whom I had (perhaps ashamedly) not really heard of before –but I suppose that was very much the point of centering a talk around them; women writers throughout history have so often been over-
looked and undervalued (both during their time and sometimes even now when we look back on talents in literary history), and this has, as Professor Gibbons pointed out in this case, sometimes led to their works being near impossible to find nowadays. And so it was very interesting to hear about these women’s careers for the first time, and to have the talk highlight their works and the successes they managed to achieve despite facing obstacles their male counterparts didn’t.
With the first stretch of the festival having a focus on the past, it was fitting then that the last day of the festival, Friday, had more of a focus on the future, with technology in particular being a recurring theme throughout the final morning’s talks. One talk focused on the issue of technology and children, and another on artificial intelligence. AI, of course, has gained exponential prominence lately, as AI tools quickly become more widespread and accessible, and as more people begin to worry about what this might lead to. In that regard, it was great to hear from an expert on the topic, Dr Keith Begley, about what AI actually is, how it works, and what we can expect future AI to look like.
The last day of the festival also featured what was no doubt one of the most highly anticipated talks scheduled for the event – that is the one given by journalist, author, and broadcaster, Mary Kenny. Kenny was among the more high profile speakers at the event, being, of course, a famous figure in contemporary Irish life. Her renown comes not just off the back of her reputation as a pioneering journalist (she has been referred to as “the grand dame of Irish journalism”), but also for her significant contributions to second-wave feminism in Ireland. In addition to her writing, which often touches on feminist topics, Kenny was one of the founding members of the Irish Women’s Liberation Movement (and a very influential one at that), and was also among the cohort of prominent second-wave Irish feminists (such as Nell McCafferty and June Levine, etc) who, in 1971, travelled on the so-called ‘contraceptive train’ from Dublin to Belfast to buy condoms while they were still illegal within the Republic – activism which had a landmark role in breaking the “taboo against discussing contraceptive practice”.
On Friday, she spoke about demographic collapse in Ireland, outlining her views on how and why demographics in Ireland are changing, and have changed over the years.
I had the opportunity to speak with Mary for a little while before she delivered her talk. As a feminist, and as a woman deeply cognisant of the fact that if it wasn’t for the work Kenny and other second-wave Irish feminists accomplished I’d have grown up in a much less tolerant and much more unfair and restrictive Ireland, I felt fortunate to meet and speak with her. That said, I feel I must note how in recent years, the views and values I
hold have diverged from Kenny’s. As someone who values intersectionality and empathetic inclusivity for all marginalised groups, I consider comments Kenny has made about the trans community in particular to often be unnuanced and intolerant, and very disappointing coming from someone who has long been seen as such a progressive figure. There are a handful of other areas as well where our views differ: for example, certain comments about the pandemic, and some (in my opinion) overly generous characterisations of the Irish Church of the past All told, while I would be at variance with Mary’s views on some issues, I did value meeting someone who has been so influential for Irish feminism over so many decades, and appreciated her taking the time to talk to me about journalism and social issues during her visit to Castlecoote.
Trans issues actually also came up during Friday’s panel discussion – when discussing culture wars – and I thought it was a pity that there wasn’t any vocal supporters of the community speaking on the panel. I felt one speaker in particular was needlessly insensitive and meanspirited in his brief comments about the community (whatever your opinions, trans people are people and we should treat all people with at least some degree of decency and respect when we talk about them), and so it was uncomfortable to see these sentiments go unchecked.
I did not expect to agree with every speaker on every topic raised (and I certainly didn’t), nor would I have really wanted to. A platform like
the one this festival offers represents a chance to hear diverse viewpoints, evaluate your own thinking, and have in-depth discussions with individuals rather than writing them off as people you disagree with. As such, in certain areas, and at certain points in the panel discussion in particular, I thought it would’ve been useful to have a wider range of opinions.
In general though, I must say this panel discussion was an event highlight. Audience engagement was very high, and the lively discussions and debates were extremely interesting to observe. Similarly, I thought the Q&A segments following each talk were especially engaging and informative.
There were many other standouts from the festival that I haven’t even alluded to – for example, Alf Monaghan’s talk linking the early Irish Church’s roots to the Egyptian Copts, a topic I knew absolutely nothing about beforehand and one I quite honestly hadn’t expected to find as interesting as it ended up being. Also SC Brendan Kilty’s intriguingly named ‘101 Reasons Not To Execute Someone’ was another talk I found to be thoroughly thought-provoking and engaging (it dealt with the ethical implications of the death penalty).
I must also give mention to the musical entertainment provided on Thursday and Friday afternoons. The talented Cathy Jordan and Donogh Hennessy unsurprisingly delivered a brilliant performance on Thursday, playing a set of traditional songs that of course included some penned by French himself. And the final festival event rounded things off an a real high note, with another wonderful performance by the very talented group of young musicians that is Col Ceathair.
It truly was a jam-packed festival, and I really enjoyed the whole experience. The entire event was very well run by the organisers and very well presented, the grounds of Castlecoote House being a beautiful backdrop for discussions over the three days. While there, I also met a few regular readers of this column I’d never spoken to before, which is not something I often get the chance to do, and I greatly valued talking to them and hearing their opinions and perspectives.
It was a very successful, informative, and engaging event, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to attend all three days of the festival. It is so great to have events such as these on our doorstep, and I am looking forward to hopefully attending future festivals.

Mulligan pays tribute to all who make Rose Festival such a success
The chairperson of the Castlerea Rose Festival committee has paid tribute to the army of hardworking volunteers, sponsors and the people of Castlerea and surrounding areas for making the event such a big success over the years.
Ahead of the festival, which takes place from July 30th to August 6th this year, John Mulligan said:
“With thirty-five years of experience entertaining and showcasing young and not so young talent, the Castlerea Rose Festival’s success is due to a hard-working committee, our ever-generous sponsors and the ongoing and wonderful support and interest of the people of Castlerea and the wider community.
“The Castlerea Rose Festival has become one of the most successful and entertaining family festivals in Ireland. Over the years we have had many chairpersons, secretaries, many fabulous Roses,
loads of helpers, and numerous sponsors. But the backbone of the festival has remained the same –the enthusiasm of the people of Castlerea and outlying areas”.
Mr Mulligan also thanked a number of individuals, organisations and local businesses including Roscommon County Council, Roscommon Civil Defence, An Garda Síochána, The Town Trust, Dr Greg Kelly, Bring Transport, Pat Glynn Photography, Sean Browne Castle Studio, Julie Mannion, Gerry Flanagan Construction, and Manson Electric. He also highlighted the continued support of the local media.
“All are welcome to Castlerea for this year’s Castlerea Rose Festival which is taking place from Sunday, July 30th to Sunday, August 6th. There promises to be something for everyone to enjoy this year,” he concluded.

79th Annual CARNIVAL Ballygar Carnival 3rd – 8th AUGUST 2023
A history of the carnival
DAN DOONER
The origins of Ballygar Carnival can be traced back to the Second World War and the town’s new parish priest at the time, Canon John Feeley. With the global conflict coming to an end, the new arrival was busy trying to solve some of the issues faced by those closer to home.
Among the many issues on his to-do list was the ancient heating system at St Mary’s Church – practically non-existent at the time – which ensured a frosty reception for parishioners at Sunday Mass. Canon Feeley sourced radiators and piping from Mount Talbot House and a new solid-fuel central system was installed.
It wasn’t long, however, before Canon Feeley faced another major issue, one which many in the modern Church wish they had in 2023 – there were simply too many people coming to Mass!
It was decided, therefore, to extend the church in order to accommodate all the good Mass-going people of Ballygar, and that would require a fundraiser…the Ballygar Carnival.
The first Ballygar Carnival was planned and organised right down to the last detail and the event quickly became a community effort. One of the more prominent and dedicated working groups of those earlier years was the Ladies’ Catering Committee. This group cooked and baked for all who attended the dances and social events without the use of many of the modern cooking and kitchen facilities that are available today.
Murray’s Amusements were a welcome addition to the Carnival in the 1950s with fun rides such as bumper
cars, swinging boats, and chair-planes. For the older kids, the local taverns were granted an extension to normal trading hours for the duration of the carnival. Not surprisingly, punters arrived from far and wide to take advantage of the opportunity for some extra imbibing time!
While most people will roll up to this year’s carnival by car, back in the early days the arrival of bicycles and pony and horse traps was a common sight. Hundreds of bicycles were parked around the church walls and towards the Town Hall. Eamon Ryan would have shed tears of joy…and there was no need for a lock either!
These days the carnival is advertised in local and social media, a world away from the posters, leaflets and Martin Joe Moran’s Hillman Minx (complete with loudspeakers)!
The event has always been renowned for its top class musical line-ups and this year that tradition certainly lives on. In the early years, Bert Flynn’s band from Roscommon played every night, and as time went on some of the country’s best bands got in on the act –Stephen Garvey, Des Fretwell, Johnny Butler, The Melody Aces, Ivy Benson and her all-girls band, and Brose Walsh, to name just a few.
Dances usually ran from 10 pm to 4 am except on Tuesdays and Thursdays when everyone went home early…at 2 am. Dancing was not permitted on Saturdays early on, presumably to ensure everyone made it to the now bigger and warmer church on Sunday.
Shane Moore and Mike Denver will be relieved to know that dancing is certainly permitted at Ballygar Carnival on Saturday, August 5th…though 4 am might be pushing it!

DAN DOONER
Mike Denver returns to the Mattie McDonagh Centre on Saturday 5th August.
From Minnesota to Kiltoom: Now Mary’s mission is to get kids moving!
< DAN DOONER
The Mannions of Curraghmore, Kiltoom are quite a remarkable family. Dad Ciaran is a successful businessman while daughter Lily (26) is a PE teacher based in Australia, sons Evan (30) and Cormac (22) are qualified doctors, and 21-year-old son Rhys (Clean Sweep) is an actor who will soon be appearing opposite Anthony Hopkins in ‘Freud’s Last Session’.
But it’s wife and mum Mary Mannion who is the real dark horse of the household.
A native of Minnesota in the US, it was a wrong turn in Longford of all places which led to Mary putting down roots in County Roscommon.
“I was travelling around Europe and because I’m of Irish descent I decided to visit. I rented a car but got lost near Longford and had to ask for directions. By chance, the man I asked would later become my husband,” Mary laughs.
“I thought at that time that I’d never be in Ireland again so I may as well try and see as much as possible…and here we are!”
The Mannions moved to Roscommon in 1996 before Mary, who had studied Taekwondo in the US and then Galway, opened her own academy in Ballybay in 1999, later establishing the Athlone Taekwondo Academy in Monksland.
Now a sixth degree black belt, Mary is a former world champion and an internationally renowned International Taekwondo Federation judge, but lately she’s been busy kicking around a new and exciting project.
“I’ve been studying for a PhD in order to roll out a programme called ‘Head2Toe’ which is aimed at children aged 4 to 12,” she explains.
“It’s a motor skills programme that deals with gross motor issues. There are about 49,000 national school children that are suffering from Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD).
“We deal with the gross motor issues that these children have, and what we find is that using this programme can really build their self-confidence and self-esteem. If it’s started at a young age then it can really tackle some of the issues that become huge problems later on”.
The programme combines evidence-based
training techniques to address areas which may inhibit children from acquiring new physical skills.
“The structure of our programme allows us to identify the ‘challenge point’ or the exact stage at which a child begins to have difficulties with skill acquisition,” Mary said.
Children progress from Level 1 (White) to Level 5 (Red) in a similar way to Taekwondo, build-
ing confidence as they go. It prepares them to participate in activities such as PE and individual and team sports while promoting a lifelong love of physical activity.
“Right now there’s a waiting list for children of one year to six years to access treatment for DCD and most treatments are targeted at fine motor skills rather than gross skills,” Mary adds.
“There’s such a stigma for kids who can’t play
sports. It really plays on their self-esteem and it’s one of these things that doesn’t just go away. Even in adulthood you will find that the same people will shy away from some social interactions or will be reluctant to learn new skills”.
Mary and her coach Leon Brydone, a fellow Taekwondo world champion, are hoping to fill the gap left by long HSE waiting lists in order to better prepare children for physical activity.
“We want to identify challenges and let parents work with children at home. It’s an app that we have where we would provide videos and exercises to do at home. Parents really want to be involved and sometimes just don’t know the best way to go about it,” Mary said.
Mary’s daughter Lily, who works for a company which provides physical education to schools in Australia, helped oversee a pilot programme Down Under last year.
“They latched onto it and asked if they could use the programme in a special needs environment…the results were off the charts. It proved extremely effective,” Mary said.
Meanwhile, back home, it’s hoped the programme can be rolled out to Special Needs Assistants next year.
“41 per cent of parents who do access care are paying for it either fully privately or partially privately. It just becomes this huge expense where we want to have something at schools where the Special Needs Assistants can help identify challenges and get parents involved before they get access to the healthcare system,” she said.
“Up to now we’ve been working with individuals but we are hoping to open it up to small groups in the coming months.
“After that, we’d like to roll it out so that we can coach SNAs in a train the trainer situation so that they in turn can use the programme and app that we’ve developed to help parents identify and work on motor skills issues”.
To that end, a new space has been developed at the taekwondo academy where children can work on their existing skills while learning new ones. It is hoped that lifelong love of physical activity can be fostered in Monksland and surrounding areas in the coming years.
Castlecoote Tidy Towns thanks volunteers
Castlecoote Tidy Towns would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all the volunteers who turned out on a drizzly Saturday morning (July 22nd) for the an-
nual ‘Clean Coasts’ clean-up.

served afterwards were very welcome, and the group want to thank all in Castlecoote Stores for providing same.
Castlecoote Tidy Towns will hold their
next outing on the 13th of August, when a walk/ run/cycle will take place down Emlagh Road.
The group will meet at 3 pm, and hopefully the weather will be kinder!
Meanwhile, the Tidy Towns Duck Race will take place on the 10th of September after an absence of three years. More details to follow in the coming weeks.

CAUNEEN Tadhg
Maureen, another year has gone, I know a smile we would love to see. A voice we would love to hear, I know a hand we would love to touch, A presence we would love to be near.
I know a heart, a gentle heart, so loving and so true, because Maureen, they belonged to you. They say there is a reason, they say that time will heal. But neither time nor reason, will change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache, that lies beneath our smiles. No one knows how many times, we’ve broken down and cried. We want to tell you something, so there won’t be any doubt, you’re so wonderful to think of. but so very hard to do without.
“Two years have passed, but our love for you and the memories we shared remain as strong as ever.”
Forever in our thoughts.
Anniversary Mass will be held in Tohergar Church, Ballinamore Bridge on Sunday, 30th of July at 9.30am. All welcome.
THANKSGIVINGS
PRAYER TO ST. EXPEDITE
My St. Expedite of urgent and just causes, please intercede for me with our Lord Jesus Christ, succour me in this hour of affliction and despair my St. Expedite, you who are a Holy warrior, you who are the Saint of the afflicted, you who is the Saint of the desperate, you who is the Saint of urgent causes, protect me, help me, give me strength, courage and serenity. Hear my plea. (Make request). Clearly express what you want and ask him to find a way to get it to you. Now promise to give Saint Expedite a specific offering when your desire is granted. Amen. Say one Our Father, one Hail Mary and make the sign of the cross. Be sure to provide the offering you promised, if Saint Expedite grants your petition. Thank you so much for everything, for hearing and answering my prayer. Amen. M.K.

Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep. I am in a thousand winds that blow, I am the softly falling snow. I am the gentle showers of rain, I am the fields of ripening grain.
I am in the morning hush, I am in the graceful rush of beautiful birds in circling flight, I am the starshine of the night. I am in the flowers that bloom, I am in a quiet room. I am in the birds that sing, I am in each lovely thing. Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there. I do not die.
Loved and missed by Barry, Lisa, John and family. Mass for Noel and Dolores Maloney will be on Tuesday, 15th August at 11am in the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon.

Now I am contented that my life it was worthwhile Knowing as I passed along the way I made someone smile When you are walking down the street and you’ve got me on your mind, I’m walking in your footsteps only half a step behind. And when you feel the gentle breeze or the wind upon your face that’s me giving you a great big hug or just a soft embrace So please don’t be unhappy just because I’m out of sight remember that I’m with you every morning, noon and night
Forever in our hearts
Love Aileen, Hayley, Sonya, Padraig, Reza and Samantha and extended family.

Heart of Gold
We did not know that morning, what sorrow the day would bring, when a heart of gold stopped beating, and we couldn’t do a thing. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
We never fail to think of you, we never cease to care, we only wish we could go home and find you waiting there.
Always on my mind, forever in my heart - love Peter.

Ladies’ Football Championships launched
The Gaelic Chieftain monument at the Curlew Mountains near Boyle was the striking backdrop for the launch of this year’s Roscommon LGFA adult football championships on Thursday evening last.
The County Board expressed its thanks to all clubs for sending players, management and executive representatives to support the launch.
Roscommon LGFA also expressed its gratitude to the Abbey Hotel, MGF Electric, Keenan’s of Tarmonbarry, and Castlerea Recycling for their continued sponsorship and support of ladies’ football in the county.
A statement from the County Board
read: “It is much appreciated by the executive and players, and it was brilliant to have you in attendance for the launch.
“It was also great having the trophies on display for all the divisions, which the clubs will be playing for when the competition commences on August 18th, and we would like to wish the best of luck to all the clubs in the championship throughout the competition”.
The sponsors of this year’s championships are: The Abbey Hotel (Senior Football Championship); MGF Electrical (Intermediate Football Championship); Keenan’s of Tarmonbarry (Junior A and B Championships); and Castlerea Recycling (Junior C Championship).

West Roscommon prevail in Divisional Final
Under the new Roscommon Senior Football Championship structure, which was ratified by clubs earlier this year, teams from West and North Roscommon squared off in the 2023 Divisional Final in Strokestown last Saturday.
West Roscommon, made up of players from St Croan’s, Éire Óg, Castlerea St Kevin’s, Elphin, and Ballinameen prevailed on a scoreline of 1-13 to 0-11 against the North Roscommon selection of Kilmore, St Ronan’s, Kilglass Gaels, Shannon Gaels, St Michael’s and St Barry’s.
Castlerea’s Adam McDermott was the star of the show, bagging 1-7 for the Fintan Cregg-captained West Roscommon outfit.
West Roscommon will now face the runners-up of Roscommon SFC Group B (Pádraig Pearses, St Brigid’s, Michael Glavey’s and St Dominic’s) while North Roscommon will play the winners of that group as both selections begin their championship campaigns in earnest.

Oran edge Dom’s as ‘Roads win league
St Dominic’s’ championship woes worsened last Saturday evening in Athleague as they slumped to a two-point defeat to Oran in the Kepak Senior Hurling Championship group stages. The Knockcroghery outfit appeared to be heading for victory with just over six minutes remaining but conceded seven late points as the Rockfield club emerged 1-13 to 1-11
winners. Paddy Fallon’s total of 0-11 (ten frees) did the damage as Oran forged ahead in their bid to reach the knockout stages.
Meanwhile, a Cathal Dolan-inspired Four Roads swept to victory over Roscommon Gaels in the Kepak Senior Hurling League final played at the same venue. Club captain Dolan struck 0-12 (nine frees, one 65) as the Roscommon hurl-
ing kingpins retained their league title and continued their impressive start to the season.
This Saturday, Pádraig Pearses take on St Dominic’s in what is a crucial SHC match for both sides. Pearses will be hoping for a revival following two crushing championship defeats to Roscommon Gaels and Athleague. St Dominic’s have one point on the board but will be hoping to
Dubs to beat old rivals and lift Sam
The more things change, the more the stay the same! Two months on from the Irish Independent declaring this year’s senior football championship as the ‘most open in 20 years’, old rivals Kerry and Dublin will meet this Sunday to offer Sam Maguire a familiar home for the winter.
While on the surface it would appear to be ‘the same old story’, there will still be massive interest in Sunday’s game as there’s always something special about an AllIreland showdown between The Kingdom and The Boys in Blue.
The two counties know each other so well having played each other over 30 times in
the championship and fifteen times in All-Ireland finals. There remain a number of fascinating sub plots when it comes to the latest showdown.
Jack O’Connor’s return saw Kerry deliver Sam back to The Kingdom last year but they know that to obtain real greatness, they must retain their title, beating the mighty Dubs in the process. They will hope to blow more hot than cold this Sunday, having enjoyed a rub of the green in their semi-final against a dogged Derry.
The one constant for Kerry, of course, is the phenom that is David Clifford and with the Fossa genius in their side they always have a chance.
From a Dublin point of view, Dessie Farrell and his
backroom team are throwing the proverbial kitchen sink at this year’s championship as they bid to make history on a number of different fronts.
Another victory at headquarters would put the likes of old warrior Mick Fitzsimons, the colossal James McCarthy and the evergreen Stephen Cluxton on ‘Cloud Nine’, as they pass out a number of Kerry legends with eight Celtic Crosses.
The return of Cluxton, Jack McCaffrey and Paul Mannion this year has been crucial to the Dubs’ success while Pat Gilroy’s involvement in the backroom has no doubt had a major impact too.
Looking at both panels, Dublin look stronger overall. They have thrown everything into this championship and it
Sevens Success
is one last hurrah for several of their players who are coming to the end of their careers. They will want to go out on top.
Kerry are worthy defending
C’mon The Town
Four Roscommon Town teams reached Sevens Finals in Shiven last weekend.
Our Rovers side had a comfortable win against a young Real side in the U-14 Cup final. Goals from Aaron Miley, Lucas de Sousa, William Godfrey and Eoin Naughten saw the older lads over the line. Star Player: Senan Grogan.
The U-16 girls won their Shield final against Ballaghaderreen. Paige Caslin gave Town the lead before Ballagh’ equalised but the girls kept going and secured the win through late goals from Daniella Kerr and Lucy Coyle. Star Player: Andrea Murray.
The boys’ Town 1 team capped off a good day for the club with a 3-1 win over Ballymoe. An Enzo Bueno brace and a goal from Rory Dunne saw the lads claim the Cup. Star Player: Finnan Devane.
Well done to all the players and coaches and thanks to everyone for
coming out to support the teams on a wet evening. Thanks also to Shiven Rovers for hosting the finals and to Padraic Clarke and league officials for coordinating the event.

Close-range shots: Wide legs, and chest over knees.
Long-range shots: Narrow legs, chest slightly over knees to avoid falling back.
Starting point on crosses: Centre of goal for corner and sideline crosses. Nearer post for closer crosses.

The Irish Oaks went the way of Aidan O’Brien (for the 7th time) and Ryan Moore with the favourite Savethelastdance, who got up in the final strides to beat English raider Bluestocking by ½l.
In the Saphire Stakes, Tim Easterby’s English raider, Art Power, showed his liking for the track winning on it for fourth time. He will probably be back for Champions’ Weekend.

Willie Mullins won both the 2021 Tote Galway Plate and the Guinness Galway Hurdle but was out of luck in last year’s Galway Plate as his neighbour John ‘Shark’ Hanlon and Jordan Gainford won with Hewick, who will be fancied once again this year.
An outsider, Born By The Sea, 6th in the Grand National, always runs well and could provide local trainer Paul Gilligan with a win at a big price if he gets in. He had a warm-up race on the flat at Fairyhouse last month and at 24 should at least be in the reserves.
On Thursday, there are 41 entries in the Galway Hurdle and next week we will look back on the opening days and take a closer look at the last four days of the festival.
Racing News
Following his fall from San Antonio in the Irish Derby which resulted in a broken leg, Wayne Lordan will probably be on the sidelines until the autumn. Lordan will attend a specialist next week according to his agent Ryan McElligott.

Fleming had topped his group before wins over Les Rawson in the last 16, Wayne Harries in the quarter-finals, and Aaron Killane in the semi-finals.

Clay shooters win Division
Three Roscommon’s clay shooters took Division Three
honours at the National Association of Regional Game Councils’ annual County Clay Shoot competition in Banagher, Co Galway recently. The Roscommon contingent was among 27 county teams taking part this year with Wexford topping Division One and Galway winning Division Two. Roscommon’s total of 418 points in the second division is a far cry from the county’s performance in 2022 which saw it lan-
guishing in the middle of Division Three on 362 points.
Team managers, Mark Craven and Aidan O’Connor, expressed their overall satisfaction with the results.
In the club competition, meanwhile, St John’s narrowly missed out on promotion to the second division while Les Riley of Ballaghaderreen just missed out on third place in the Super Veterans’ Clay Target Championships.

Brave Camógs fall to Tipp
Jean Kelly was the star as Tipperary proved too strong for Roscommon in the Glen Dimplex Premier Junior All-Ireland Camogie Championship semifinal in Ashbourne last weekend. The Premier County ran out 2-12 to 0-8 winners over the Rossies, who can take plenty of positives from a much-improved year for the game in the county.
Kelly, a former Tipp senior player, has scored all ten of her side’s goals in this year’s championship. Her two killer strikes in three minutes as the game neared the final quarter put paid to Roscommon’s hopes of reaching an All-Ireland final.
Kelly contributed 2-7 in total in a sensational performance. Elsewhere, Ciara McKeogh’s per-
formed an excellent marking job on Roscommon danger woman Shauna Fallon, while Ciannait Walsh was dominant in attack. Niamh Watson, Fallon and Orla Connolly were among the Roscommon scorers but when Kelly pounced for her two goals, the Premier County were already planning for a visit to Croke Park.
