Last week’s competition saw a flurry of pink-clad golfers take to the fairways to support the ‘Play in Pink’ event in aid of the National Breast Cancer Research Institute.

The women’s results were as follows: 1st Orla Kinahan (44 points); 2nd Sheila Cleary (41); 3rd Sandra Feary (41); 4th Anna Walsh (38); 5th Kathleen McDonnell (38). The 9-hole competition was won by Brid Kenny with 23 points while Geraldine Kenny (19) won the ‘Get into Golf’ competition. The Men’s winner was Cathal Joyce with 41 points.

Last Thursday’s 97 Club competition results: 1st Chris Fuery (29 points); 2nd Angela Veldon (29); Lily O’Sullivan (28).

Castlerea

The Silke’s Bar competition was won by Giles McDonagh with 43 points. Michael Doyle was runner-up with 41 while Patrick O’Connor (39), Darryl Kelly (40), and Gerry McLoughlin (41) won Cats 1, 2, and 3 respectively.

The men’s 18-hole strokeplay, sponsored by Hester’s Bar & Restaurant, will take place this weekend.

In the women’s section, Maura Kelly (38) won The Cosy Bar competition with Valerie Callaghan in second place (35). The Norio’s competition was won by Dympna McDonnell (18) with Mary Finan runner-up (16).

Roscommon

The men’s Intermediate and Minor Scratch Cups took place last Sunday. The Intermediate Cup was won by J Connaughton (81) with R O’Neill in second place (83) and G Glynn (84) third. T Cullen won Best Nett with 69.

The Minor Scratch Cup went to T McManus (90) while K Madden (91) was runner-up, and P O’Brien was third (92). Best Nett G Keegan 71.

N Hughes won the Ladies’ 18-hole competition with 39 points. The 9-hole competition was won by M Lennon with 20 points.

F Flanagan was the winner of the Senior Men’s competition with 37 with the syndicate’s Adelaide ridden by Ryan Moore in 2014. The last Irish-trained winner of the race was Joseph O’Brien’s State Of Rest in 2021.

Next week we will look at the seven-day Galway Festival which starts on July 31st 31st as well as the five days of Glorious Goodwood, starting on August 1st.

Feeley wins in Mullingar

Mote Park cyclist, Daire Feeley, was back on the podium once again last weekend as he sprinted to victory in the sixth round of Cycling Ireland’s National Road Series at the Mullingar GP.

Feeley was just too quick for Jamie Meehan and Liam Crowley and closed to gap to series leader Conn McDunphy with just one round to race.

Finally, best of luck to Lady Captain Paula Miley ahead of her Prize to the Ladies this week. There will be a Gent’s 9-hole competition on Saturday also.

It was a case of triple handball heartbreak for Roscommon competitors recently as local pairings suffered defeat at the semi-finals stage of All-Ireland competition. Roscommon duo, Sean Jennings and Denis Creighton, were defeated by Offaly’s David Hope and Noel Murphy 21-1, 21-16 in the Men’s ‘A’ All-Ireland Semi-Final. Kilglass pair, Shauna Coggeran and Alanna Coggeran, went down 21-2, 21-8 to Kilkenny’s Emer Barron and Aoibhe Ryan in the All-Ireland Minor Doubles Semi-Final. Meanwhile, Martin Conroy and Danny O’Shaughnessy were defeated by Offaly’s Declan Cooke and Declan Kilmurray 21-16, 19-3.

Here’s hoping for better luck for Sean Raftery and Brian Mannion in the 60x30 All-Ireland Junior ‘B’ Semi-Final this weekend!

Local stars ‘Down Under’

The very best of luck to the Republic of Ireland Women’s team and especially to local girl Heather Payne and Abbie Larkin (a grand-niece of talented photographer and fellow Dub, Bernie O’Farrell!) who are gearing up for the Women’s World Cup.

The Girls in Green kicked off their campaign today (Thursday) against co-hosts Australia in Group B, which also includes Nigeria and Canada.

Olivia ready for Croker!

Congratulations to Olivia Hussey, who has been chosen to play camogie at the interval of Sunday’s All-Ireland Senior Hurling final at Croke Park after winning a Cumann na mBunscol competition.

13-year-old Olivia is a pupil of Lisaniskey NS in Donamon and a daughter of David and Valerie Hussey. Enjoy your day Olivia!
