Epilim
I would appreciate your advice on a sensitive matter please. I have a history of epilepsy and I was prescribed Epilim while pregnant. My son was recently diagnosed with autism and a family member with a medical background mentioned that there could possibly be a link between my son’s diagnosis and my taking Epilim during my pregnancy. My question is, have you come across this in your legal experience. I understand that you work in the area of medical negligence.
Thank you for your letter. I can confirm that a legal case similar to your situation was litigated before the Courts late last year. In that case, it was alleged that a neurologist failed to properly inform the child’s mother about the risks of taking an epilepsy treatment drug, Epilim, during pregnancy. The case was settled for a significant eight figure sum.
Epilim is a brand name for a medication called sodium valproate (also known as valproic acid), which is used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder.
Studies have shown that exposure to sodium valproate during pregnancy can increase the risk of birth defects, including neural tube defects, heart defects, limb abnormalities, and developmental delays.
In 2018, an investigation by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) found that over 1,200 children in Ireland may have been affected by sodium valproate since the 1970s. The investigation also found that there were significant gaps in the information provided to patients and Consultant Neurologists about the risks associated with the drug during pregnancy.
In Ireland, there have been a number of legal cases involving the use of Epilim (sodium valproate) during pregnancy.
If you have concerns regarding your own situation, please feel free to contact me for further advice, I will be happy to speak with you in confidence.

Humphreys officially opens ‘An Ríoga’
Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys was in Boyle on Wednesday for the official opening of An Ríoga, a new multi-disciplinary enterprise and creative space, on the site of the former Royal Hotel. The amenity features an enterprise facility and ground floor exhibition space and leads to an outdoor events space and bandstand along the new riverside promenade.
The roll-out of the development follows a unique and extensive collaborative process involving Roscommon County Council, Boyle Town Team and Boyle Chamber of Commerce. Many other community and voluntary groups participated through the Boyle 2040
Framework Plan and continue to contribute through the Boyle Community and Economic Plan.
Chief Executive of Roscommon County Council Shane Tiernan said An Ríoga “will be a connecting point linking the river promenade and town centre and would provide business and employment opportunities”. He said the new facility would also be a focal point for tourists, as an information point and permanent art exhibition space.
Commending the work of Roscommon County Council, her officials and local stakeholders, Minister Heather Humphreys said: “The project is transformative for the town of Boyle”.

The TRUTH is there are 3 keys to a genuine weight loss (real fat loss) plandiet, exercise and metabolism correction. All 3 keys interconnect, one will not work without the other. Your metabolism is the most powerful of all the 3 keys. It is the ‘switch’ that controls everything else. In most people this ‘switch’ is off.
Metabolism problems like Slow Thyroid, Type 2 Diabetes, Sluggish Liver, Hormone Imbalances, PCOS, Endometriosis, Infertility and Digestive Problems like Constipation, IBS and Diverticulitis will limit or stop your weight loss, no matter how much dieting or exercise you do .
Work on fixing your metabolism problems for amazing results. Combine this with a reasonable diet and exercise and you will get the best, the fastest and the easiest weight loss ever.

WEEKLY CLINIC AT THE HIVE, DUBLIN ROAD, CARRICK-ON-SHANNON EVERY WEDNESDAY. BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL
Reader says Bill would ‘criminalise’ mothers
Contae Ros Comáin
Dear Editor,
The Government is proposing a law to establish exclusion zones within one hundred metres of any GP clinic, maternity hospital, or family planning centre, within which no-one may engage in an activity which could influence someone’s decision to have an abortion. This is not simply about stopping ‘protests’ but would criminalise private conversations and even the ability to set up a stall offering supportive pro-life help to pregnant women who may be contemplating an abortion.
The Bill tries to make some superficial concessions to fundamental rights by explicitly allowing pro-life events outside Leinster House. However, this is a very thin veneer which seeks to mask the draconian and sweeping nature of
this legislation. The Bill would cover a massive territory, particularly in compact cities. It would have the effect of even criminalising a mother for having a conversation with her pregnant daughter if she were asking her to consider proceeding with the pregnancy, if that conversation were within one of these sprawling exclusion zones.
This Bill is not about stopping harassment, which is already a criminal offence. Instead, it discriminates against the pro-life viewpoint being expressed in public areas. Five years ago, onethird of those who voted wanted to retain the 8th Amendment, but now their views are being treated as requiring draconian special legislation. This is unacceptable.

In praise of Mayo roadworks!
Dear Editor,
On reading Frank Brandon’s account of the roadworks in Mayo in the Roscommon People last week, I felt sorry for the people being delayed on their way to work. We had a lovely break in Westport a few weeks back and encountered these delays, but we were in no hurry.
I did notice the amount of huge machines doing the work. We travelled around County Mayo and you could see the great work being done – highways,
walkways, greenways, cycleways, heritage centres, and beautiful parks. One could only assume that having had a steady amount of Ministers and a Taoiseach over the years must surely have helped in getting this work done.
Good luck to them and they will have no delays getting Sam Maguire around the county when they eventually get their hands on him!
Yours faithfully,
An avid reader

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK
THURSDAY Moving on
By now, the ordinary man and woman in the street – the dogs in the street too – are ready to move on. Every story has a shelf life. There are only so many front pages, or leads on news bulletins, you can claim. The longevity of the RTE pay scandal soap opera has actually been remarkable.
By the time Ryan Tubridy and Agent Kelly bashfully arrived at Leinster House earlier this week – like two naughty schoolboys summoned to the principal’s office – it had already been 19 days. 19 days of swirling words… claims and denials, twists and turns. Then came that Oireachtas hearing on Tuesday: ‘Showtime: The Return of Ryan’. Deep down, we knew this was the Big Finale, or certainly the beginning of the end. It didn’t disappoint. Ryan and Agent Kelly (otherwise known as Noel) sat glumly before members of the Oireachtas, the two ‘witnesses’ pretending they were happy to be there. We watched, gripped by the exchanges, imperfect though it all was. Some of the wayward questioning left a lot to be desired; often the answers were laughable, reminiscent of the flights of fancy proferred by politicians during this country’s golden era of tribunal tribulations.
It was fun while it lasted, this RTE Exposed series. But, once we had our pound of flesh – by seeing repentant Ryan back out in the open – people were ready to move on. We couldn’t be expected to stay with RTEgate much longer. There was other stuff to deal with. For starters, the offensive weather. The relentless rain demanded our condemnation. The BBC was having its own problems, with top newsreader Huw Edwards the subject of unwelcome headlines over his alleged conduct. In some European countries, there are alarming temperatures, tales of hellish heatwaves.
Closer to home, there was the important matter of the race for Sam, the media talking up the likelihood of a glamour All-Ireland final between
Dublin and Kerry. True, new RTE
DG Kevin Bakhurst has been giving lots of media interviews, but this is no longer box office, more like a barman picking up glasses and sweeping the floor after a particularly busy night. Rightly or wrongly, we’re moving on. Now it’s over to Mr Bakhurst – and the Government. Over the coming months, the public will check in every now and again to see if the promised RTE reforms happen.
As for Ryan Tubridy, his mastery of language was evident at that Oireachtas hearing, even if much of what he uttered was from his considerable reserves of plámás. At the end of the day, he’s a showbiz personality. He’ll be back in front of a mic – if not here, then with the BBC.
FRIDAY Every cloud…
Much as we might tut-tut about RTE’s extravagance (with our money), let’s
not lose sight of the reality that some of our politicians have privately been loving this circus.
This is the political establishment that’s overseeing the National Children’s Hospital scandal (original estimated cost: about €800m; current projected cost: about €2.2bn, and rising).
Some years ago, our then-friends in the Dáil oversaw the introduction of dud e-voting machines; when the experiment was abandoned, the machines, which cost over €50m, were sold off for about €70,000. When the scandalous Irish Water costs overrun hit the headlines, it emerged that about €70m alone had been spent on consultants.
In recent weeks, there has been very little media/public focus on the housing controversy or other issues, all because of the RTE fiasco. This is why politicians are secretly chuckling as RTEgate takes the heat off them and ushers in the summer recess.
Happy days!
SATURDAY
‘Dinosaurs’ roar again!
Since Colm O’Rourke surprised us all by becoming Meath manager last year – at the age of 64 – he has often been dismissed as ‘a dinosaur’. He may have been one of the greatest Gaelic footballers ever to lace boots, and a renowned pundit/columnist for three decades or so, but on his belated inter-county management debut the critics instinctively raised eyebrows and pronounced that O’Rourke is from a different era, a yesterday’s man –a legend certainly, but out of touch with modern management. It may be that they are right – the jury has been in no rush – but it’s been refreshing to see O’Rourke take to the role with a smile on his face and an enthusiasm for the considerable challenge he chose to accept. If his team have sometimes been naïve, so be it. O’Rourke is going to
reject much of The Gospel According to Modern Managers – and do it his way. Rumour has it that when he took over as Meath boss, O’Rourke had the temerity to tell his players to enjoy their football and “enjoy life”. One can imagine that a shudder skipped down Jim McGuinness’s back at that very moment!
Meath have been erratic under O’Rourke – mixing the enthralling with the naïve – but today there was joy midst the inconsistency with a fine victory over a fancied Down team in the Tailteann Cup final. I was pleased for O’Rourke. I note too that he had Meath GAA royalty, i.e. Sean Boylan, with him in the dugout at Croke Park. I can only assume that Sean – in the parlance of the critics – would be considered a dinosaur by dinosaurs!
Well, sport is meant to be about enjoyment, or at least that used to be the case. Today, two great football men have reminded us that class is permanent – and that it might just be okay to enjoy your football (and your life).
SUNDAY Football thrills
The All-Ireland SFC semi-finals were closer than widely expected. Derry in particular will feel they could have upset the odds. Monaghan gave their all against Dublin (Conor McManus a joy to watch).
The Dubs finished clinically, a few of their stars playing from memory, as the peerless Joe Molloy put it on Off The Ball today.
Kerry v Derry was a fantastic game. Derry were superb, the champions in real trouble late on. Ultimately, they prevailed. I can’t call the final just now, and I’m not alone!
MONDAY Rise of Rice…
I see Declan Rice has signed for Arsenal in a £100m transfer “plus £5m in add-ons”. Does that make him the most expensive Irishman since Ryan Tubridy?

A column by Roscommon People editor paul@roscommonpeople.ie
A Roscommon woman has claimed €135,820 after matching five numbers and the bonus in the July 1st Lotto draw. Speaking to National Lottery representatives recently, the woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said: “I don’t even know what came over me that night to even play the Lotto. I wouldn’t be a regular player at all and can’t even remember the last time I played. I happened to be in the shop and just said to myself sure I
might as well buy a ticket – thank goodness I did!
“It was a few days before I even realised I had a winning ticket. I never check my tickets straight away so it was some shock when I finally scanned this one. To see the message ‘You’ve Won Big’ is certainly a surprise and then to hear the amount is another thing. It’s great to finally be able to say I’ve been to the Winners’ Room,” she concluded.
Local woman claims €135k in Lotto winnings Register your event for National Heritage Week 2023

FRANK BRANDON
FRANK BRANDON’S unique take on life ...
Weather woes: Why I’m not complaining about ‘breaking sods’ on the bog
Our man Frank on the soaring temperatures worldwide (while he toils on a soaked bog); A sensational sporting weekend; Local issues… and TV license musings
It’s Monday afternoon as I write. I’ve just come back from the bog, where, after a relatively short time, we gave up on the futile effort of trying to foot the turf. The almost incessant rain of the last few weeks means that everything is drowned wet; the sods were breaking as we tried to lift them, and – to cap it all off – just as we enjoyed the first fine day for a long while, the Heavens opened and back came the rain.
Funnily enough, even though the normal reaction would be to give out about all the poor weather, the truth is that we really should be grateful for all our recent summer rain, as all around the world temperatures are set to reach record highs. In parts of Europe, temperatures in the mid40s are being experienced, with Andalusia in Spain expecting to reach 44C, while in Sardinia there is a possibility that there could be a new record high of almost 49C. It’s easy to dismiss the heatwaves as just minor incon-
veniences, especially for holidaymakers, but in Europe last year the number of heat-related deaths was an extraordinary 61,000 – a simply mind-blowing number. And it’s not only Europe that is suffering. Large swathes of the US are also on red heat alerts, and in Death Valley, California, they are bracing themselves for highs of around 53C. The highest temperature ever recorded was 54.4C and there is every chance that figure could be surpassed this week.
So, as the cooling, soothing rain falls down on my wet turf, I must resist the temptation to complain about it all, and be thankful that we live in a country that doesn’t suffer from any type of extreme weather conditions.
However, forgive me if I say a little prayer for some fine weather soon, so that I might have something to heat the house with when the winter comes! Though with the way climate is changing all over, who knows what type of weather we will have next winter – we may get warm winter sunshine and I might not need the fire at all!
Anyway, let us appreciate our very pleasant Irish climate, and as the world suffers from the effects of too much heat, a small thing like not being able to foot my turf is a small price to pay for being able to have a normal, if very wet, month of July.
A sensational sporting weekend
Many times through the years of writing this column, I have acknowledged that a huge number of people have no interest at all in sport, and while I find it hard to understand, I fully accept that everyone will make up their own mind on the subject. On a few occasions, readers have even told me not to write about sport at all. And so I have to apologise to all those ‘non-sporting people’ in advance, because last weekend we had such extraordinary contests in a variety of sports that I simply couldn’t ignore them!
On the golf course, Rory McIlroy produced two brilliant final holes in the Scottish Open to win the tournament by a single stroke, thereby achieving his first ever victory on Scottish soil. With the British Open taking place this weekend, hopefully he will get the big monkey of not winning a major since 2014 off his back, and claim one again to cement his rightful place as one of the great golfers of our time.
Then we had two brilliantly competitive All-Ireland football semi-finals, and while we got the final that most commentators wanted, both Dublin and Kerry were put to the pin of their collars to get through, with Monaghan and Derry really putting it up to them.
However, the genius that is David Clifford once again came to the fore. Described by Tyrone great Sean Cavanagh as the greatest GAA footballer of
all time, Clifford pushed, pulled, and tugged Kerry over the line to qualify for yet another All-Ireland final.
While all that was going on, over the water in Wimbledon, 20-yearold Spaniard Carlos Alvarez was dethroning the legend that is Novak Djokovic (who was going for five in a row) in an enthralling five-set men’s tennis final played in front of a crowd featuring ce-
lebrities such as Brad Pitt, Daniel Craig, Cliff Richard and the King of Spain, King Felipe VI.
On Saturday, history was also made in the Ladies’ final, when for the first time ever, an unseeded player (Marketa Vondrousova) claimed the title.
Also on Saturday, the All Blacks showed they will be a massive force to be reckoned with in September’s World Cup when
they gave a fair old trimming to the reigning world champions South Africa, while on Friday, as the rain fell here all day, our U20s also fell (at the final hurdle) as they came up short against a superb French side in the World Cup final.
If all that wasn’t enough, on Sunday morning our lads here played our neighbours Glinsk in a competitive challenge match, while by all accounts Richard Hughes’ goal for Roscommon Gaels in the O’Rourke Cup final against Oran will feature on social media for a long, long time to come.
And so what a weekend it was.
For all of us who love our sport, it was simply sensational. Here’s hoping the Cats can put a halt to the Limerick lads’ gallop in the hurling final next Sunday – I can’t wait!
It would be wrong of me to finish up without mentioning our women’s soccer team, who will kick off their World Cup final appearance with a game against one of the host nations, Australia (New Zealand is the other host nation) in front of more than 80,000 spectators this morning (Thursday). We all wish Vera Pauw’s team the very best of luck.
To qualify for the finals is a huge achievement, and they have already done us proud, but despite their rankings don’t be surprised if the girls in green ruffle a few feathers over the next few weeks and give our nation a month to rival Italia ‘90!
Super draw for All-Ireland tickets
As I told you last week, out here in Creggs the local GAA Club is holding a big fundraising draw for stand tickets for both All-Ireland finals, along with a Saturday night stay in the four-star Gibson Hotel before the football final throw-in.
The finals have produced two brilliant pairings; the hurling on Sunday is between the all-conquering Limerick and former hurling aristocrats the Kilkenny Cats, and the football final the following Sunday is the one everyone wanted, with reigning All-Ireland champions Kerry taking on their biggest rivals, the Dubs. You could be at one or both of those games for the price of a single draw ticket!
Tickets cost €10 for one, €20 for two, and €50 for eight, and you can get yours online at creggsgaa.ie, or alternatively from John Hanley (086 8125211), Mary Beades (087 6298146), Gerry Keegan (086 3920951), or Sean Brandon (086 1708506). The draw for the hurling final tickets takes place live on Facebook at 10 pm this Thursday evening, with the football draw happening the following Thursday evening, also at 10 pm, and live on Facebook. Best of luck!
And finally…
Up to now, one of the perks of being aged over 70 was the fact that I had a free TV license, a perk that saved us €160 a year.
However, according to the news today, a quarter of all the people who were due to renew their TV licenses at the beginning of July have failed to do so (apparently as a result of the Tubridy affair), which effectively means that my special exemption is no longer quite so special.
Who would have thought that Tubs and his extra payments would have had such repercussions?

Funding boost for Lough Ree Access for All
Lough Ree Access for All CLG, a licenced passenger boat service based locally for people with disabilities on the island of Ireland or in the UK, was recently announced by Rethink Ireland as being among the high-impact social enterprises to be awarded funding under the Social Enterprise Development Fund, now in its sixth year.
Lough Ree Access For All is a social enterprise which was set up in 2020. The group provides accessible boat trips, recreation and key supports to people with disabilities from all over the country. The Access project focuses on delivering the positive effects of waterways travel
by enhancing the physical and mental health of passengers who access the boats independently by way of a revolutionary new ‘roll-on-roll-off’ design, akin to a small car ferry where the bow lowers to allow easy access.
Ranging from community services and affordable counselling to sustainability education providers, eight social enterprises responsible for responding to urgent needs in communities and tackling some of the country’s most pertinent societal barriers have been awarded funding. All awardee social enterprises will receive a combination of cash grants and business supports, including a cash injection
Gospel Reflection
Sunday, July 23
God is always teaching His people, as we hear in today’s First Reading. And what does He want us to know? That He has care for all of us; that though He is a God of justice, even those who defy and disbelieve Him may hope for His mercy if they turn to Him in repentance.
This divine teaching continues in the three parables that Jesus tells in the Gospel today. Each describes the emergence of the kingdom of God from the seeds sown by His works and preaching. The kingdom’s growth is hidden like the working of yeast in bread; it’s improbable, unexpected, as in the way the tall mustard tree grows from the smallest of seeds. Again, this week’s readings sound a note of questioning: Why does God permit the evil to grow alongside the good? Why does He permit some to reject the Word of His kingdom?
Because, as we sing in today’s Psalm, God is slow to anger and abounding in kindness. He is just, Jesus assures us – evildoers and those who cause others to sin will be thrown into the fiery furnace at the end of the age. But by His patience God is teaching us that above all He desires repentance and the gathering of all nations to worship Him and to glorify His name.
Even though we don’t know how to pray as we ought, the Spirit will intercede for us, Paul promises in today’s Epistle. But first, we must turn and call upon Him. We must commit ourselves to letting the good seed of His Word bear fruit in our lives. So, we should not be deceived or lose heart when we see weeds among the wheat – truth and holiness mixed with error, injustice, and sin.
For now, He makes His sun rise on the good and the bad (see Matthew 5:45). But the harvest draws near. Let’s work so that we might be numbered among the righteous children – who will shine like the sun in the kingdom of the Father.

‘It’s been a great experience’
Art student Juliet on eye-catching murals
Two striking new murals that have been painted on opposite walls at the entrance to the Harrison Centre in Roscommon town have attracted much positive comment! ALANNAH ITA HEALY caught up with local art student JULIET CULLEN just as she was applying some finishing touches to the second mural on Tuesday afternoon. Here’s how their chat went!
What prompted this mural? And how long have you been working on it?
I was commissioned to do the mural by Johnny Doyle (local businessman). I started it on June 26th, so I’ve been working on it nearly a month now, usually during the week, Monday to Friday. I’m aiming to have it done very soon.
How did you choose this design?
I took some inspiration from the mural in Kildare Village, they have a cool floral mural there. I put together some pictures and sent them on to (Johnny Doyle), and he sent back the ones with the style that he liked, so I knew where to go from there. And I thought the message, “We’re going places”, was a good one.
Have you ever done a project like this before?
No, this is my first time doing a mural. I didn’t realise how much work it would be at first, but it’s been a great experience.
What’s the process of doing a mural like this? Do you have to stencil out the design first?
No, I don’t use stencils, I just draw it all out freehand. I use oil pastels then and paint over it. But for the wording, I do use a metre stick to draw it out first.
What has the reaction of the public been like while you’ve been working on the mural?
There has been a lot of reaction actually. I honestly couldn’t believe how many people have stopped to say something. Even on the first day when I only had a few leaves and stuff painted, people stopped to give compliments. It’s been overwhelming really; people have been so kind.
Any interactions that stand out?
Actually yes – there was one time when I was out here painting and these little boys came up and were being lovely and complimenting the mural, saying ‘It’s so nice’ and ‘You’re such a good artist’. I thanked them and they left. But then they came back a little while later, and started ripping the plastic off these mini canvases they’d just bought in Tesco’s, asking, “Could you please paint something on this for us?”. So, I said, “Of course!”. That was such a lovely interaction.
Would you like to see more art going up around the town?
Yeah definitely, I think it would be lovely. It’s something nice to look at. And like people have been saying when they’re going past, it really helps brighten up the place.

Plaque celebrating ‘The Lough’ is unveiled
Barry Molloy, the captain of the Roscommon team who won the 1951 All-Ireland minor football title, recently performed the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate St Coman’s GAA Park in Roscommon Town.
St Coman’s, known to generations of Roscommon people as ‘The Lough’, was described as Roscommon GAA’s ‘spiritual home’ and ‘field of dreams’. It was Roscommon’s home ground from 1936 to 1968, and staged matches right up until 2017. Among the many famous matches it hosted were the 1936 All-Ireland senior football semi-final, numerous Connacht senior and minor finals, and the 1965 All-Ireland junior hurling final.
The plaque, and a display board chronicling the major milestones in the history of ‘The Lough’ since it was first used in 1889, are located on a wall beside the former entrance to the famous pitch. The plaque was created by well-known
local sculptor Mark Feeley, and the unveiling ceremony was the culmination of two and a half years of painstaking work by the Roscommon Gaels club’s history committee, spearheaded by club PRO Orla Fleming and Marie Gillooly. In unveiling the plaque, Mr Molloy, who is one of joint honorary presidents of Roscommon Gaels GAA Club, paid tribute to all who played in St Coman’s Park over the years. He paid special tribute to all the people who had worked on maintaining the ground. Mr Molloy referenced a picture on the display board that shows a commentary booth being built for the legendary Micheál O’Hehir. Mr Molloy also recalled that many events, other than GAA matches, were held in St Coman’s, including the Roscommon Agricultural Show. He then unveiled the plaque, on which the inscription, which is in Irish and English, reads, ‘This plaque marks the site of St Coman’s GAA grounds, ‘The
Lough’, which was officially opened on 14th June, 1936. It was home to Roscommon County GAA and Roscommon Gaels GAA Club for many years. It honours those who passed through its gates, in particular, the players, volunteers, and fans of many generations who proudly dedicated their time and skills, to the establishment, promotion and preservation of our national games which play such an important role in our sporting and cultural traditions and heritage’.
The chairperson of Roscommon Gaels, Philip Mullen, welcomed all those in attendance and spoke of the major role ‘The Lough’ had played in the history of Roscommon Gaels and Roscommon Town. Historian and local history tour guide Marie Gillooly provided a context of the role of Gaelic games in Irish life, even before the foundation of the GAA in 1884. She said the Lough was first used in 1889, and a hurling match be-
tween Roscommon and Castlebar took place there in 1902.
In 1926, a group of locals acquired a section of the Lough grounds from the Land Commission for games. This ultimately led to the opening of the ground ten years later.
Ms Gillooly outlined many of the landmark matches that had helped to copperfasten the status of St Coman’s as one of Connacht’s leading GAA grounds for over thirty years. She also spoke of other major events held in the ground, including cycling, athletics, street leagues and ice skating during the winter. In 1954, a crowd of over 20,000 came to ‘The Lough’ to attend a rally by ‘The Rosary Priest’, Fr Peyton.
Six players were chosen to represent all the great hurlers and footballers who had played in ‘The Lough’: legendary Leitrim footballer Packy McGarty, who gave one of the great individual displays in a Connacht final in the Lough
in 1958; Mick Hoare, captain of the 1965 All-Ireland-winning junior hurling team; Owensie Hoare, the first player to win All-Ireland senior football medals outfield and in goal; Jimmy Murray, captain of the 1943 and 1944 All-Ireland-winning Roscommon senior football teams; Gerry O’Malley, one of Roscommon’s greatest ever dual players, who won his only All-Ireland medal in ‘The Lough’ in 1965; and finally, Barry Molloy, captain of the 1951 All-Irelandwinning minor football team. Each of the deceased players was represented by members of their families. Citations were read detailing the illustrious career of each player.
The attendance also included Roscommon County Board chairperson Brian Carroll, past chairpersons of Roscommon Gaels, joint honorary president of Roscommon Gaels Seamus Comiskey, and historian Tony Conboy. Master of Ceremonies was Noel Fallon.

‘Celebration Night’ in honour of Frank Kilbride
A who’s who of the country music world are set to descend on Longford town later this month to honour one of the industry’s most esteemed and respected personalities, Frank Kilbride.
The charismatic Longford man has enjoyed a long career both on stage and in the management side of the industry.
The north Longford man’s first foray into the industry saw him enjoy a successful spell with local group ‘Go Lucky’ before later joining The Virginians’ Showband.
It was during a tour of the UK where he would meet his businessman and subsequent lifelong friend Mattie Lennon, who would later go on with Kilbride to open Edgeworthstown’s Park House Hotel. The popular midlands venue would soon become a mecca for some of Ireland’s leading country bands and artists.
Kilbride’s ability to draw some of the biggest names to a small provincial town like Edgeworthstown would also see him play a key part in the shaping of RTE flagship show, Country Irish.
A presenter with Shannonside
Radio for over three decades, an undertaker for almost four decades, a postmaster for 22 years, and a county councillor for 15 years – there isn’t much this affable Longford man hasn’t taken on and mastered!
A proud campaigner in raising thousands of euro for various charities during that time, arguably his biggest challenge arrived only two years ago when Frank was diagnosed with cancer. It was a battle he took on and overcame in true Kilbride style.
To mark Frank’s outstanding contribution to the industry, a ‘Celebration Night’ will be held in the Longford Arms Hotel on Thursday, July 27th. Among the leading acts lined up to appear are Jimmy Buckley, Philomena Begley, Foster and Allen, Brendan Shine, Michael English, Trudi Lalor and many more. There will also be special appearances on the night from former Irish soccer greats Pat Jennings and Niall Quinn. Tickets are priced at €20 and available at the Longford Arms Hotel, or alternatively attendees can pay at the door on the night.

The Chairperson of the ICMSA Dairy Committee, Noel Murphy, was blunt this week in his assessment 2023 prospects for the dairy sector, claiming the year “was not shaping up well” for farmers.
“From high inputs to poor weather conditions, 2023 has been very hard for dairy farmers from a financial and farm management perspective. Add in the changes to the nitrate’s regulation and the potential changes to come and it is hard to be optimistic as to where milk volumes will be produced in the coming years,” he said.
Mr Murphy also called on Kerry and other co-ops to consider mid-year top-up payments to suppliers and was quick to dismiss any prospect of further price cuts.
Cullinan welcomes emissions vote result
IFA President Tim Cullinan welcomed the outcome of the vote on the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) at the European Parliament, describing it as a “victory for common sense”. The Parliament voted not to include cattle within the scope of the IED, and also not to bring in more pig and poultry farms.
Tim Cullinan said including livestock farming within the IED was the completely wrong approach in the first place.
“Farms are already heavily regulated and they are not ‘industrial’ units. We have a pasturebased system in this country. This was driven by ideology, not science, and it’s the ‘thin end of the wedge’ to force a costly licensing regime on farming,” he said.

ICMSA wants total revamp of Dairy Beef Scheme
ICMSA President Pat McCormack has called for a total revamp of the Dairy Beef Scheme and an acceptance on the part of the Minister for Agriculture that the scheme has to be “refunded, reenergised and redesigned”.
Mr McCormack also took aim at some commentators and said he wasn’t “willing to sit there and be lectured at”.
He said some of those commenting on the sector “can barely disguise their animosity towards commercial farming and their ambition to end our sectors and livelihoods”.
The ICMSA President said that the princi-
ples underpinning ICMSA’s proposed ‘pivot’ towards dairy-calf-to-beef had not changed and were, if anything, becoming even more compelling.
“It is more profitable, it has lower emissions and it can address some of the issues around animal welfare that we have seen used against us by groups and individuals who don’t need to be asked twice to find something to use against all commercial farming,” he said.
Minister needs to solve payment delay
IFA Deputy President Brian Rushe has called on Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue to revisit his plan to delay payments to farmers in 2023, rather than move the debate into next year.
“The Minister’s commitment to review the dates for 2024 onwards rings hollow. He is not willing to revisit his plans to delay payments in 2023 and is instead putting his head in the sand and trying to move the conversation onto 2024,” Mr Rushe said.
The Department of Agriculture’s plan means ANC payments would be pushed out by four weeks and the Basic Payment pushed back by two weeks.
“Any delay in farm payments this year is 100 per cent because of unilateral action and poor planning by the Minister and his Department,” Mr Rushe claimed, accusing the Department of “doing a solo run”.
“Now the Minister needs to front up and solve it. They seem to have no concept of the importance of these payments or the impact any delay will have on farm families, particularly this year when cash reserves will be tight on many farms as revenues fall and input costs remain stubbornly high,” he said.

Dutch Ambassador visits Roscommon
< DAN DOONER
Dutch Ambassador Adriaan Palm believes Brexit has brought The Netherlands and Ireland closer together and says both countries can learn a lot from each other around areas such as agriculture, housing, and tourism.
Ambassador Palm was speaking during a visit to County Roscommon on Tuesday week last, during which he visited Roscommon County Council, Elphin Windmill, and the Arigna Mining Experience.
“Since Brexit, we have looked across our ‘big neighbour’, the UK, more. We have found each other and realised we have a lot in common,” he said.
“Our trade has substantially increased in the last five years, both in goods and services. In services we are one of the largest partnerships now and in trade we’re also in the top ten with each other.
“We have a lot of similar challenges too: there is a housing crisis in Ireland and there is a housing crisis in the Netherlands. So there are areas where we have to look at each other and ask where we can learn from each other”.
Mr Palm’s tenure as Dutch Ambassador to Ireland comes to an end later this month when he takes up the role of Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia.
“Looking back on four years in Ireland, what has stood out for me is the Irish people, the accessibility, the friendliness, the reaching out, and the personal interest (they show). I hope that in those four years, despite Covid-19, we’ve been
able to strengthen relationships,” he said.
“The fact that both the Irish and the Dutch are both quite down to earth helps in establishing better links. Covid has had an impact on relationships in general but at the same time, with the opening up of countries, people started to notice new places and I think that’s why so many people are visiting Dublin (from the continent). With that we also see an increase in the number of people visiting other parts of Ireland”.
The Dutch Ambassador’s tour of Roscommon took him to Arigna, where he visited the Mining Experience and also to Elphin, where he met compatriot Marika Leen, who recently re-thatched the local windmill.
“I think at the start of the 20th century some of those windmills fell into disrepair and then say in the 1970s and ‘80s you had communities that wanted them up and running again,” he said.
“It’s a community effort that you see in Ireland and in The Netherlands. I am very much interested to hear from my own compatriot to see what she thinks about the re-thatching of windmills in both countries and how we can use them to boost tourism and community feeling”.
Ambassador Palm said he was also looking forward to seeing what life was like for people in Roscommon, adding that the county shared many similarities with rural parts of The Netherlands.
“There are a lot of similarities between us in gen-
eral. For example, when it comes to the windmills, the history of mining and agricultural development and challenges. This is where I want to see how we can create opportunities and find out where we can learn from each other,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Ambas-
sador Palm met with local councillors in the Council Chamber, where he was asked about possible twinning opportunities between Dutch and Irish towns by Cllr Orla Leyden, who had just returned from a visit to Chartrettes in France, a town which is twinned with Roscommon.
The Dutch Ambassador said the issue of twinning was very much up to the cities and towns themselves, but that rural areas in The Netherlands and Ireland could learn from each other when it came to agricultural challenges and the issue of young people emigrating.

Kepak to host Sustainability Farm Walk on Fitzmaurice family land in Athleague
Kepak Group is inviting farmers and other interested parties to a ‘Sustainability Farm Walk and Information Evening’ on the Fitzmaurice family sheep and suckler farm in Athleague on Thursday, July 27th from 4 pm to 8 pm.
The event is taking place in partnership with suppliers William J and James Fitzmaurice on their family farm in Lisnasillagh, Athleague and will focus on key environmental, social and economic issues facing farmers. It will also have a particular focus on farmer health and well-being.
During the farm walk, attendees will have the opportunity to hear
from a wide range of industry experts including Philip O’Connor and Tommy Fallon (IFAC), Barry Caslin, Energy and Rural Development Specialist (Teagasc), Laura Tully, The Movement Mentor, founder and facilitator of Fit Farmers, Thomas Cassidy (HSA), Dr Thomas Moloney (DFL Seeds), and farmer William J Fitzmaurice. Speakers will provide farmers with unique insight, advice and support on how they can keep their farm sustainable into the future, covering topics such as energy efficiency, soil health, financial management and stress control.
Ahead of the event, Jonathan Forbes, Agriculture Director, Kepak, said: “Kepak are delighted to host this farm walk in conjunction with the Fitzmaurice family. The farm walk will provide farmers with a great opportunity to learn more about the key sustainability practices they can implement on their farm to ensure it is sustainable and resilient for generations to come.

European debate continues over Nature Restoration Law
Speaking from Strasbourg in the past week, IFA President Tim Cullinan said that as the vote on Wednesday last to reject the Nature Restoration Law outiright did not pass, the focus now moves to the trilogue process between the EU Commission, the Council and Parliament.
“The vote for outright rejection only lost by 12 votes (324 to 312), the reality is that the original EU Commission version of the law has in effect been pushed back. Arising from its rejection at three EU Parliament Committees, significant changes and amendments have been made, particularly in relation to rewetting and more changes are needed,” Tim Cullinan said.
“The EU Council recently agreed a muchmodified version of the law. While we would have concerns around this version it would address some of the concerns but more changes are needed,” he said.
Mr Cullinan said there was a real and genuine concern that there will be significant ramifications from passing the law in its current format.
“There is still a lot of ambiguity around what the law will mean and with no impact assessments undertaken at Member State level the impact on farm incomes, food production and farming practices is unclear,” he added.
“The debate became about whether people are for or against nature which is a misrepresentation of the situation. The detail of the proposed ‘law’ is the issue”.
Some campaigners in Europe described last Wedneday’s vote against ‘killing the bill’ as a ‘huge social victory’.
Meanwhile, an open letter signed by 6,000 scientists said opponents of the law “not only lack scientific evidence, but even contradict it”.
gain real tips from experts on how they can look after their health, while maintaining a sustainable farm business”.
Host farmer William J Fitzmaurice said: “We are delighted to be hosting the upcoming Sustainability Farm Walk with Kepak and look forward to welcoming the local farming community to our farm in Athleague.
“Sustainability is a real focus for us, and in recent years we have been incorporating multi-species swards into our grazing system and this will be displayed as part of our overall paddock grazing system on the evening”.

The official launch for Roscommon’s new ‘King of the Lake International Pike Festival’, sponsored by Lough Ree Angling Hub, took place recently. Pic: Melissa O’Donoghue
Anglers from around the world to attend ‘biggest ever International Pike Festival’ on Lough Ree
Anglers from around the world (including the island of Ireland) will be flocking to Roscommon on September 8th, 9th, and 10th, with Fáilte Ireland and Roscommon County Council backing a new tourism initiative with a French angling market focus.
It has been announced that the 2023 Lough Ree International Pike angling festival is to be extended to the full body of the lake for the very first time with an additional prize fund added to make it one of the most lucrative events in Europe this year for pike anglers.
The event, previously known as the Pike Classic, is also to be rebranded as the ‘King of the Lake International Pike Festival’, after supports from Failte Ireland, Roscommon County Council and Inland Fisheries Ireland.
The festival will open with a new exhibition and angling show in Ballyleague on Friday, September 8th, to be followed by two days of competitive fishing on the entire lake of Lough Ree between the Bypass Bridge in Athlone and the lock at Tarmonbarry in County Roscommon
as the search for the ‘King of the Lake’ begins. The prize fund has also been extended to over 11,500 euro with ten new sponsors coming on board, more cash prizes and the opportunity for one lucky angler to head to one of the busiest fishing trade shows in France next year. Lough Ree Angling is also teaming up with Failte Ireland to bring a team of angling journal-
ists and presenters to the region during the festival in September.
“We are delighted with the new structure for the competition,” said Chris Scally (Vice Chair of the Lough Ree Angling hub).
“This is what pike anglers have been looking for. It’s a vast lake from Athlone town to Tarmonbarry but hundreds of anglers from all over Ireland and abroad want to come here and
compete, so from now on there will be no frontiers”.
The Lough Ree Angling hub has also paid tribute to Failte Ireland for their additional support for the festival this year: “We have been supported to promote the festival at one of the largest events in Europe at Clermont Ferrand,” Chris said.
“And now we hope to bring some of the top angling journalists and pre-
senters in France here to the Hidden Heartlands to see for themselves how good the fishing is on our lake”.
Chris also thanked the new festival sponsors this year: Denniston’s of Longford, Wild Total outdoors, Wild Hunter, Failte Ireland, Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands, Visit Roscommon, Roscommon County Council, and Inland Fisheries Ireland.

Kerrane: Have your say on safety works in Frenchpark
Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has urged people to have their say on Roscommon County Council’s proposed plans for safety works at what she described as the “dangerous junction” along the N5 in Frenchpark.
Deputy Kerrane said she has been going door to door in Frenchpark sharing the proposed plans and details on how to make a submission on such plans.
“I would encourage residents and businesses to have their say on the plans and I have offered to help anyone who needs it in making a submission. I will also be making a submission based on my discussions with people in Frenchpark to ensure their concerns are raised. This is primarily around parking for residents and businesses.
“This is absolutely key. Residents need to be able to access their homes as before and businesses need to be able to provide enough parking to keep their doors open. As I have repeatedly said, consultation is critical to ensure we get this right.
“I am very aware that traffic lights are not seen as the solution for everyone, but I am not sure we would ever find a solution that would have 100% agreement. At the end of the day, I had to seek funding for something specific in order to get these safety works agreed, if I did not, it would be a case of ‘there isn’t agreement on a solution’ and nothing would happen once again”.
Deputy Kerrane said people can make a submission by email to roads@ roscommoncoco.ie or in writing to Roscommon County Council, Roads and Transportation Department, Áras an Chontae, Roscommon Town. People making such submissions should mark it ‘Interim Traffic Safety Scheme Frenchpark’. The deadline for submissions is July 26th.
Tulsk History Society news
Following much work being completed at Ogulla Shrine since the History Society’s phase one restoration project commenced last autumn, Mass will be celebrated on site at 7 pm this coming Friday, July 21st, by Bishop of Elphin, Kevin Doran.
It is the first time since 2015 that Mass will be celebrated at the well – where St Patrick reputedly baptised Eithne and Fidelma in the fifth century AD – and is being revived this year by Fr John Gannon.
Tulsk History Society will contribute to National Heritage Week 2023 with a Percy French Exhibit at the Macra Hall on Sunday, August 13th. The society have teamed up with Philip Sheppard of Sheppard’s Auction House (of Durrow, Co. Laois) to present the first ever exhibit of Percy French paintings in Tulsk – French’s native village. The centrepiece of the exhibition will be the unveiling of a beautiful antique cabinet that French once owned, on which are panels painted with landscape images that French himself applied.
Philip Sheppard will give a talk on the day on Percy – the artist and the man – after Councillor Liam Callaghan unveils the cabinet at 1 pm. Entry is free and doors will open at 12.15 pm. The History Society are looking for any books or other memorabilia associated with Percy French to exhibit on a stand on the day and would be very grateful for any contributions (to be returned after the exhibition).
To temporarily donate anything, please email historytulsk@gmail.com, or call Jody on 086 3384850.

A message to Heaven
You can only have one mother, patient kind and true, no other friend in all of the world, will be the same as you. When other friends forsake you, to mother you will return, for all her loving kindness, she asks nothing in return. As we look upon her picture, sweet memories we recall, of a face so full of sunshine, and a smile for one and all.
Sweet Jesus take this message, to our dear mother up above, to tell her how we miss her, and give her all our love.
Missing you so much & loved always, Fergal, Shirley, Dylan, Aaron and Annie xx - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Miss you Mum, Good night
When I think about the old days I want them back again, our house was always happy and full of laughter then. We’d all be there together content in every way, then the mainstay of the family simply went away.
All of us, do the best we can but it will never be the same, we can’t tell you how often we all still speak your name.
All I wish is that once more before I lower the light, I could only kiss her on the cheek and say ‘I love you Mum’ Goodnight
Missed dearly and loved forever, Ellen, KC and Luke xxx

Camógs bid to topple Tipp UNDERDOGS SET FOR SEMI SHOWDOWN
Glen Dimplex All-Ireland Premier
Junior Camogie Semi-Final:
Roscommon v Tipperary at Ashbourne at 12 noon on Saturday
< SEAMUS DUKE
After an excellent win against Limerick in the quarter-final, Roscommon are just one step away from an All-Ireland final appearance in Croke Park, but while confidence will be high when they travel to Ashbourne on Saturday to face Tipperary, they will go into the match as underdogs.
Tipperary were in a three-team group, defeating Wicklow by 5-17 to 2-3 and Cavan by 3-14 to 1-9. Those results meant that they qualified directly for the last four while Roscommon had to navigate the Premier County’s neighbours, Limerick, in a quarter-final, having beaten Tyrone and Louth and suffering defeat to Clare.
The tough examination that Roscommon had against Limerick will no doubt stand to them on Saturday. It took a lot of character to come back late in the game when Limerick went ahead, and they will require that same spirit again this time out.
The Roscommon defence, marshalled by Michaela Fallon in goal, has been excellent this year, and it has been a feature of their play that they have been strong in the tackle without giving away too many frees. That level of
GAA Results
discipline will have to be maintained at the weekend.
Rachel Fitzmaurice and Orla Connolly will have huge roles to play in the engine room at midfield once again while up front, Shauna Fallon will play a pivotal role from play and frees.
The experience of players like Niamh Fitzgerald, Niamh Watson and Claire Curley will also be a huge factor as Roscommon attempt to upset the odds.
A win here would be a sensational result for Roscommon Camogie given where the game
in the county was just 12 months ago. It may be a bridge too far for the Rossies but they have certainly defied the odds before and will be hopeful they can do so again this Saturday.
Prediction: Tipperary

On her marks… Hollie set for Youth Olympics
< DAN DOONER
One of County Roscommon’s brightest young stars will once again be at starter’s orders at the European Youth Olympic Festival, which takes place in Maribor, Slovenia from July 23rd to 29th this year.
Suck Valley Athletics Club’s Hollie Kilroe took part in last year’s competition - the largest of its kind in Europe - reaching the 400 metres final in Slovakia.
Speaking to People Sport this week, the 17-year-old, who is going into 6th year at the Convent of Mercy, said she was hoping to put her best foot forward later this month.
“I was ill last week with a virus but I’m back training this week and trying to get the speed built back up,” she said.
“I’ll be hoping to make the final again but it’s going to be a lot tougher this year with some of

the times achieved out there so far this year and the number of injuries I’ve had (in the last few months)”.
A daughter of Fintan and Siobhán Kilroe from Ballybride, Hollie missed out on the Irish Indoors in March due to injury and her pathway to this year’s 42-strong Irish squad has not been straightforward due to issues with her pelvis, shin splints, and other setbacks.
The Suck Valley athlete is now training with one of the club’s founding members, Dermot McDermott, in Sligo, and last December was named as Connacht
U-18 Female Athlete of the Year.
Hollie has high praise for the work she’s doing in Sligo and also for fitness coach Richie Feeney, who has helped her through injuries.
“Training is going good in Sligo. It’s different to what I was doing before and I have lots of friends
up there so it’s good to be able to see them,” she said.
“I’ve been working with Richie for the past two years and it’s been a great. I love working in the gym. I’ve been really focussed on my running this year and getting back after the injuries”. Looking ahead to Maribor, Hollie, who will once again compete in the 400 metres and medley relay, is hoping for a return to top form.
“It would be great to make the final again but I will definitely hoping for personal best times. That’s my focus right now,” she concluded.
The European Youth Olympic Festival is considered the largest multi-sport event for athletes aged between 14 and 17 on the continent. Mimicking the Olympic Games model, this year’s event will see 48 counties across Europe taking part, with around 3,600 athletes participating.

Horses for Courses
by Tom Red
There are nine fillies left in the Irish Oaks on Saturday headed by Aidan O’Brien’s English Oaks runner-up Savethelastdance, one of five he has in the race. Warm Heart, Be Happy, Lambada and Library make up the Ballydoyle quartet as O’Brien seeks his seventh win in this classic.
The other Irish entries Dermot Weld’s Azazat, Joseph O’Brien’s Luminere Rock and Jim Bolger’s Comhra and Ralph Beckett’s lightly raced raider Bluestocking completes the field. Savethelastdance’s Epsom run 1¾l behind Soul Sister coupled with her win in the Cheshire Oaks is by far the best form and she should win from stablemate Warm Heart winner of the Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot where Luminere Rock finished second and Bluestocking third.

Oran 0-13
< SEAMUS DUKE
The headline after this league final played at Dr Hyde Park on Saturday night was that Roscommon Gaels had won their first senior league title since 1994, but most of those in attendance left the ground talking about Richard Hughes’ sensational goal in the second minute of injury-time that sealed the title.
Oran had done well to come back into the game late on and reduce the gap down to just two points in closing minutes.
However, as they committed bodies forward in bid to rescue the game, the Gaels cleared the ball down the stand side, and county player Hughes set off on a run from inside his own half. He dribbled the ball soccer style to the 20-metre line before chipping it over the head of the Oran goalkeeper Shane Regan. It was an outrageous piece of skill and one of the best goals seen in the Hyde in many years.
On a wet and miserable evening, the Gaels played with the help of the elements in the first half and by the 15th minute they led by 0-6 to no score with Ryan Conlon, Rory Carthy and Cian Connolly prominent. Oran had to wait 18 minutes for their first score but they improved before half-time and a couple of Darragh Walsh frees and another from Cormac Regan had reduced arrears to four at the break: Roscommon Gaels 0-8 Oran 0-4.
John McManus and Scott Oates performed well for the Gaels through the centre, and Oran could never bridge the gap between the teams. Points from Darragh Walsh and Ciaran Lawless narrowed the gap to three by the 50th minute.
However, the town team scored a vital goal a minute later when Brian Kelly was on the end of a fine team move. Points from Colin Walsh, Darragh Walsh and Connie Regan narrowed the gap to three with two minutes of normal time left.
John McManus lifted the siege with a Gaels’ point (it should have been a goal) but in injurytime Darragh Walsh and sub Evan Keane reduced the margin to two once again. Then Hughes intervened with that sensational solo goal and it was game over.
It was a hard fought game that never reached any great heights in terms of quality but it will have served as good preparation for both sides ahead of the championship.
For the Gaels, Richard Hughes, Senan Lambe, Scott Oates, John McManus and Ryan Conlon were excellent while for Oran (who were appearing in the first ever senior final) Colin Walsh, Ciaran Lawless, Darragh Walsh and Connie Regan stood out.

Silverware for Strokestown, Michael’s and Fuerty…

Senior champions Strokestown added the O’Gara Cup (league Division Two) to their trophy cabinet to get their year off to an impressive start when they had two points to spare against Castlerea St Kevin’s at a wet and windy O’Rourke
Park on Saturday last.
Two goals from Colin Compton and Shane McGinley against the run of play in a three-minute spell just before half-time were decisive. At that stage Castlerea were leading by three points but those vital goals proved crucial in the end.
The second half was low scoring as Castlerea battled to get back into the match but The Town held out for a notable victory.
In the Tansey Cup final (Division Three), St Michael’s bridged a 35-year gap to take the title when they defeated Strokestown by 3-9 to 2-8 in Cootehall.
The home side laid the foundations for their victory in the opening half; Jack Lane and Bryan O’Connor got the goals as they led by 2-7 to 0-6 at the break.
But Strokestown were always in the hunt in the second half and Mikey Kavanagh was outstanding, scoring 2-5
from play. However, Michael’s held out for a tremendous win with ‘man of the match’ Fiachra Henry scoring 1-7 for the winners.
Finally, in the Division four final, Fuerty pipped Boyle by a point (2-6 to 0-11) after extra-time in Abbey Park on Friday night to take the title.

Big guns lay down championship marker

Athleague and Four Roads showed again last weekend why they are the teams to beat in this year’s Kepak Roscommon Senior Hurling Championship.
Athleague scored a resounding 6-16 to 2-10 win against Pádraig Pearses while Four Roads racked up a total of 4-22 when defeating Tremane (1-13).
Athleague led by five points at the break put they pulled away in a very one-sided second half. Robbie Fallon was the Athleague hero, scoring four goals.
In the second game, Four Roads continued their outstanding form with another big win, this time against Tremane. The championship favourites led by 2-9 to 1-8 at half time, and they stretched away in the second period to win in the end by 18 points.
This weekend, St Dominic’s play Oran on Saturday evening (5 pm) in what looks an evenly matched contest. In the later game at 7 pm, Four Roads will be the strong fancy to score another big win when they take on Roscommon Gaels.
