A Castlerea nurse who works in University Hospital Galway has pleaded with people to redouble their efforts to stem the Covid tide.

Mother-of-one Niamh Kelly says staff in local hospitals are now facing into “possibly the toughest weeks” of their careers.

On page 4 of this week’s People, she says: “Now, more than ever, we need to stick to the guidelines and simply stay at home Roscommon-Galway Constituency and reduce our contacts as much as possible. Community transmission is rampant and it can only be stopped by people staying apart”.

nounced on Tuesday) of 116 confirmed Covid-19 cases in Co. Roscommon.

Yesterday (Wednesday) saw a significant decline in the number of new cases of Covid-19 in Roscommon with 27 new cases confirmed in the county up to midnight on Tuesday, following a record high of 116 cases notified on Monday.

The figures mean that the county’s 14-day incidence rate of Covid-19 is 1,014.8 per 100,000 population with 655 cases confirmed in the fourteen days leading up to Tuesday. Roscommon now has the seventh lowest 14-day incidence rate of the disease. The national 14-day incidence rate is 1,448.8 per 100,000. See reports inside.

How will I know if my child has a legal case for Cerebral Palsy or a birth injury?

If it can be established that a mother’s pregnancy, labour and delivery was mismanaged by the delivery team and the injury to the baby’s brain could have been avoided, had competent medical treatment been given then certainly questions will need to be answered by the hospital and the delivery team.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Cerebral Palsy is a disorder of motor function caused by an acquired injury to the brain as it is developing. It is important to understand that only a minute number of babies who suffer from Cerebral Palsy, do so, as a result of negligent care during the pregnancy, delivery or even from the neo – natal care provided.

Cerebral Palsy can occur without negligence but the manner in which the pregnancy, delivery and neo – natal care is handled can often have an effect particularly if it is handled poorly. In these instances, if competent care had been provided then quite often the injury to the brain could have been avoided or at least significantly reduced.

Numerous common complications can arise during pregnancy, delivery and in the immediate period afterward, unfortunately some of these are not properly addressed by medical staff.

Covid-19: Reports from the frontline The recent numbers suggest that the Covid-19 situation in Co. Roscommon remains unstable, with a record high of 116 new cases confirmed as recently as Tuesday.

Local frontline workers have urged people to stay at home and adhere to public health guidelines in the weeks ahead, with a stark warning that the Irish healthcare system is already over-stretched.

This week, Dan Dooner spoke to three healthcare workers on the frontline as they battle valiantly to bring the recent surge under control…

‘We are facing toughest weeks of our careers’ Castlerea nurse urges people to stay home < DAN DOONER

Niamh Kelly is a 29-year-old nurse and mother-of-one from Castlerea. Her father Paul is a big supporter of Tulsk GAA.

Castlerea woman, Niamh Kelly, is a nurse at University Hospital Galway.

Her mother Eilish (neé Conama) is originally from Ballymoe.

Niamh lives with her partner, Brian Finan, and one-year-old daughter Harlow and works in University Hospital Galway.

She trained at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin and worked in neurosurgery there before travelling to Australia were she worked in Sydney for a year.

Niamh returned to Ireland in 2018 and started work in UHG. She was on maternity leave when the Covid-19 pandemic struck but returned to work in late March at the height of the first wave.

She says the current situation in Galway is extremely worrying and the hospital is overstretched.

“Before Covid, I worked in an Oncology ward but in March our staff moved to a new ward.

symptoms are swabbed and then come to us as we have a ward of single rooms. They are cared for in the single room until their swab comes back and they go to the main hospital if negative, or to the infectious diseases ward if positive.

“At this very moment, the situation in Galway is at its absolute worst in terms of Covid-19. The west of Ireland did extremely well for so long, but unfortunately we now have numbers of positives double, if not triple, to those of the peak of last spring. The hospital is completely over-stretched in terms of staffing, beds, equipment and ICU capacity,” Niamh said.

Staff at University Hospital Galway are rostered for 13-hour shifts but can end up working 14 and 15 hours, depending on the acuity of patients. Winter is always a difficult period but the rising number of Covid-19 patients

has exacerbated the situation.

“People who tried to stay away from hospital for as long as they could are now presenting to the Emergency Department much sicker and requiring higher levels of care. There are only a certain amount of ICU beds, so patients are being cared for at ward level with high-flow oxygen,” Niamh says.

Since moving to the Query Covid ward, Niamh has seen patients with all types of different ailments, but one thing is clear when it comes to Covid-19 – the virus doesn’t discriminate.

“This virus affects the young, old, sick, healthy…it doesn’t exclude anyone or keep anyone safe.

“Each patient is treated as a positive case until the swab proves otherwise, and it’s been that way since March,” she added.

leagues at UHG don their battle attire, which includes full personal protective equipment – masks, visors, HAZMAT suits, and goggles.

Not only does ‘donning and doffing’ of PPE gear take up precious time, it’s also draining for staff.

“It really is exhausting to spend a day or a night shift constantly in and out of PPE between patients. I can only speak for myself and my colleagues of course, but we are coming up to a year of this pandemic now and we are so tired, just so run down and fatigued.

“It is just so disheartening to see that despite all of our best efforts over the last nine months, we are actually now facing into possibly the toughest weeks of our careers. The numbers have sky-rocketed in recent weeks and the number of hospital admissions are double what they were in spring,”

Niamh added.

The Castlerea woman concluded with a heartfelt plea to members of the public.

“As much as everyone is fed up hearing about Covid-19 and people are struggling with loneliness and isolation, this is just a snapshot in time. Now, more than ever, we need to stick to the guidelines and simply stay at home and reduce our contacts as much as possible. Community transmission is rampant and it can only be stopped by people staying apart.

“There is an end in sight. I’m proud to say that I have received the vaccine and please God the continued roll-out of the vaccine will bring an end to this in the coming months.

But for now, we have to follow the public health guidelines and listen to advice from the World Health Organisation or else we will not be able to go back to our ‘normal’ lives”.

Dr. Tomás Donegan of The Medical Centre in Roscommon town has told the Roscommon People that the local practice is referring high numbers of people for Covid-19 tests and that the current wave of cases is the worst so far.

The GP also advises people not to assume that symptoms of what they believe to be the ‘usual’ sinus infection or head cold they get at this time of year are not Covid-related.

“This current wave is certainly worse than what we experienced in March,” he said. “We are referring more people for Covid-19 tests but the positivity rate for those referrals is also higher.

“This wave of Covid-19 seems to be more infectious also and with increased household transmission, more families are now coming down with symptoms whereas before it may have been just one or two members of a family.

“We have a lower threshold for symptoms now but we are finding that there is a high number of people assuming that it’s their ‘usual’ sinus infection or annual cold. It has to be pointed out that the symptoms of Covid-19 are not just those highlighted on

the news and that many of these people are testing positive for the disease.

“I would urge people to contact their GP or family doctor if they have any doubts at all.

Everyone should act as if they have Covid-19 and stay home.

There are very few essential reasons for people to be leaving their homes but if they do they should follow all public health advice,” he said.

Dr. Donegan added that the roll-out of a vaccine would not

instantly mitigate the threat of Covid-19.

“The roll-out of a vaccine is a glimmer of hope and it’s the first bit of good news we’ve had but it won’t suddenly get rid of Covid-19. Each one of us still needs to follow the public health advice and limit our contacts”.

Dr. Donegan said that he and his colleagues are anxiously waiting to be vaccinated and are hoping to hear positive news soon.

‘You’re at risk every time you leave home’ < DR. BREDA SMYTH, DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC HEALTH IN THE WEST

With the current level of community transmission in County Roscommon, we must consider that every time we go outside our house and garden it’s actually a risk. The best thing we can do to halt transmission is to stay at home and only leave for essential shopping and medicines and essential trips.

It’s also important that every time we do have to leave our homes that we take every precaution possible. Every contact we have and everything we touch is a possible transmission risk. Wear a mask, stay two at least two metres apart, and continually wash your hands.

Anyone who shows any symptoms suggestive of Covid-19 must isolate immediately and contact their GP. There are clear guidelines as how to isolate within a household and while it is challenging, it’s important to follow public health guidelines to stop the spread. It involves staying within one room and having your meals delivered to you but it is necessary to prevent transmission to loved ones.

The infection rate tells us how many people are positive with Covid-19 but it doesn’t tell us how severely ill those people are. It can take seven to ten days for people to get very sick and severely ill requiring hospital admission.

There is a very significant threat on our hospitals with the levels of infection we are currently seeing in the community.

This past year has been unimaginable for everyone, particularly younger people. Their lives have been completely taken away from them in many ways. But I do think we can underestimate the severity of how bad the

Covid infection can be.

We have seen examples of this through case studies in the media of young people getting very sick and requiring hospitalisation, and this does happen.

With the level of infection among young people at an unprecedented high level, there is going to be a proportion of those young people who get very, very sick.

Also, for every single person who gets infected there is a chance of passing that infection on to loved ones, who may be older or vulnerable of who may have a chronic condition. It’s really important that the most vulnerable can access hos-

pital care. Increasing case numbers will also increase demand on the health care system. It intensifies the burden on the hospital system to a level where there is a question of whether it can deal with the demand in the coming weeks.

Our actions now can halt this growth in infections and allow the more vulnerable in our communities that might require hospitalisation or intensive treatment to get that treatment. It’s up to us to do everything we can so that we don’t get to that crisis situation and so that everyone can be cared for in the fashion that we’re used to in Ireland.

Best moment of the game for me was when the knackered part-time Marine players – the proverbial plumbers, painters and bakers – looked to the Spurs bench midway through the second half… and saw Gareth Bale (most recently of Real Madrid) coming on!

In the Healy household, we’re getting into Netflix, with its great range of viewing options. Still, old habits die hard, and I keep an eye on the Late Late Show, which you may recall was once a world renowned light entertainment/current affairs programme.

As I have consistently warned, Ryan and his team have been busy repackaging it – mostly as Misery TV, with a bit of fawning over C-list celebrities thrown in.

Tonight, the studio is taken over for a Covid vaccine demonstration. Later, when Tubridy interviews HSE chief Paul Reid, he asks his guest to talk about how serious things are, adding a condescending “don’t sugarcoat it”.

Meanwhile, Tubridy produces yet another patronising state of the nation address, firstly on Covid, then directly addresses Leaving Cert students, none of whom are watching.

As I’ve written here before, I think the Late Late team are getting this all wrong.

By Friday night, viewers do not want more Covid ‘news’, or any misery for that matter. Some entertainment/distraction from the real world would be appreciated.

I expect Claire Byrne, who routinely (and tediously) turns her show into a Demonstration Centre, was watching the Late Late’s latest Misery Special with envy. She probably switched over to Netflix.

Sunday In the Sunday Independent, a letter to the editor argues for “this country” to be referred to as Ireland, rather than “the Republic”.

The writer makes the point that most of the media now reference “the Republic”, as opposed to Ireland, while “always giving Northern Ireland its full title”.

No doubt the trend is partly down to the relentless commentary on Brexit issues and Covid figures.

Anyways, I was amused to note that the letter writer was a Mr. Michael Collins (to give him his full title) of Dublin 12.

Still on Sunday Leeds were dumped out of the FA Cup by Crawley Town, a club I had never heard of.

Meanwhile, Marine, whom Crawley Town have possibly never heard of, saw their great cup run end with defeat to Spurs.

Crawley were full value for their win against Leeds – for whom the defeat was a not unfamiliar FA Cup humiliation.

Disappointed over the Leeds’ exit, I considered never watching football again, but changed my mind within 20 minutes and

tuned in for Marine v Spurs.

It was a quintessential ‘magic of the FA Cup’ occasion as a club which plays in the eighth tier of English football welcomed the Spurs superstars to their modest ground.

Instead of modern and expensive stands, the pitch is surrounded by houses, meaning locals were able to watch the game in (restricted) party mode, complete with drinks…one guy even enjoying the game in the company of a life-size cardboard cut-out of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

When Marine’s Neil Kengni – a trainee plumber – rattled the crossbar with a terrific shot, even the cardboard Jurgen Klopp probably applauded.

Collectively, the Church and political establishment in Ireland let down thousands of people during a revolting era.

Rossie’s Chinese film debut delayed due to Covid outbreak! < DAN DOONER

Roscommon town native, Jason Croghan, who has been based in Hangzhou, China for the last three years, told the Roscommon People this week that a Covid-19 outbreak has delayed his film debut!

The 36-year-old software developer lives in Hangzhou with his wife Hui and was due to fly to the city of Shijiazhuang to work as an extra on a Chinese film called ‘The Battle of Lake Changjin’.

The movie, which is government funded, tells the story of a group of Chinese army reservists taking on the US Army, and was due to start production this week – but has now been delayed for two weeks.

Jason said an outbreak in Shijiazhuang in Hebei province has seen more than 700 people test positive for Covid-19.

“The Covid-19 outbreak is 300km

from the filming location but the local government will not let us travel. They have tested a city of 11 million people and found 700 cases and locked the whole province down for seven days. I have been told to wait until at least the 15th now to travel.

“Beijing is currently locked down completely and people are not permitted to enter or leave. I was due to travel via Beijing. Those who have already travelled to the filming site must now quarantine where they are for two weeks,” he said.

The Roscommon town man spoke to this newspaper almost a year ago when news of the novel coronavirus first broke and he was confined to his apartment in Hangzhou.

He says that the situation has improved dramatically in that city in recent months.

“There hasn’t been anything that would even remind you that there even

was a virus for around half a year or more in Hangzhou.

“Everyone still puts their mask on but it’s mostly just to appease others. There haven’t been any restrictions here for a long time. Elevators, for example, are as full as they used to be. There isn’t any virus here at all. People just need to do what they’re told (by health experts),” he said.

Jason added that the authorities practice zero tolerance when it comes to the

disease and local lockdowns and contact tracing have been strictly enforced.

Smartphones have also been used in the fight against Covid-19 and a colourcoded system lets citizens know if they free to enter crowded areas such as shopping malls and subways.

“I do require an up to date Covid-19 test within 72 hours of travelling to another region but there are no queues at the testing centres and no wait times, so it’s quite convenient,” Jason concluded.

€89,000 Sliabh Bawn Community Benefit Fund – final call for applications The Sliabh Bawn Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund is currently open to receive applications until Friday, 29th January 2021.

The Community Benefit Fund is available to community and voluntary groups, non-profit groups, or organisations with a charitable status. The Fund provides support to the cumulative value of €2 million for the operational lifetime of the wind farm.

Making the announcement in November 2020, Enda Conaty (Asset Manager Sliabh Bawn Power DAC) explained: “Through our Sliabh Bawn Community Benefit Fund, we aim to contribute to the development of local projects and services for the benefit of all local people.

“The Fund seeks to prioritise projects and initiatives that support and benefit the area surrounding Sliabh Bawn Wind Farm by providing financial support to local groups, helping them to deliver beneficial projects and initiatives which fall within one or more of our broad themes of: Recreation, Social Sustainability, Culture and Heritage, Environmental Sustainability and Tourism. This year’s Fund is in excess of €89,000 and we welcome all applications from interested organisations that meet the Fund criterion”.

Since 2015, the Fund has committed to in-

vesting over €400,000 in one hundred projects.

Among the groups supported to date include local schools, sports clubs, development associations, first responder schemes, community facilities, scout groups and local athletic clubs.

As part of the Fund, a number of groups have received multi-annual commitments, spanning up to four years, to facilitate the development and implementation of larger-scale community projects. Beneficiary names and grant amounts awarded to date can be found on the Sliabh Bawn website under the Community Benefits page.

Local communities to receive over €1.4m!

Thirteen local villages are set to receive over €1.4 million under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme towards the significant enhancement of their communities and adjoining areas.

In Co. Roscommon, Tarmonbarry will receive €200,000 and the villages of Dysart, Knockcroghery, Rooskey, Four Roads, Croghan and Lecarrow will each receive €100,000 for local projects, while Creggs and Castleblakeney in Galway will each receive €100,000.

In Co. Leitrim, Carrick-onShannon will receive €200,000 and Jamestown will receive €99,900, while Lanesboro in Co. Longford will receive €71,820.

Independent TD Denis Naughten welcomed the announcement this week.

“The funding is being made available for village enhancement, improved pedestrian access, remote working and study facilities, as well as enhancing visitor and tourist experiences,

The Lecarrow funding will go towards the provision of a footpath from the marina to the village centre as well as outdoor benches, public lighting and picnic tables. Knockcroghery will be enhanced with street furniture, an artistic installation and landscaping.

The €100,000 allocated to Four Roads will see the installation of footpaths, street lighting, a bike rack and new paint scheme. Croghan will also see a pedestrian paved network and landscaping. €90,000 will go towards the upgrading of the heritage centre in Creggs to include a remote working hub and outdoor cinema and bandstand.

In a statement, she said that last December she had raised the issue twice in Dáil Éireann, once with the relevant Minister Hildegard Naughton, and secondly with the Tánaiste Leo Varadkar, who had been reasonably positive in his response.

“Following on from this, the Department had set up a virtual meeting with Sligo Airport, Minister Frank Feighan, Deputy Marc MacSharry, a number of local councillors, myself and other relevant stakeholders”, she said.

As a consequence of this meeting, a mechanism had been set up whereby Sligo Airport can apply for capital funding to carry out the mandated safety works at Sligo Airport, she said.

“This of course, is only the first step in the process but at least we are moving in the right direction” she suggested.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy was delighted to see €200,000 allocated for the creation of a public space with outdoor dining facilities and paved areas in Tarmonbarry.

“This is a project close to my heart and one I have campaigned and worked on for some time.

“Also, in my own locality it’s great to see an allocation of €100,000 for Rooskey for a lighting scheme, footpath repair and replacement, tree planting and signage scheme which is most welcome”.

Independent councillor Tom Crosby said the funding for Tarmonbarry would also see a traffic management system and pedestrian crossing introduced in the village.

“I also welcome funding of €100,000 for Rooskey village to construct a walkway/cycleway to join the village footpath with the Killinaker Bridge.

“I am delighted with the total

funding of €300,000 for muchneeded development. This will be a great boost towards further enhancing both tourist villages on the River Shannon,” he said.

Fellow Independent Cllr. Donal Kilduff said funding for villages in the Athlone Municipal Area has ensured a brighter start to the New Year.

“I am particularly delighted that four of the successful applications, Dysart, Four Roads, Lecarrow and Knockcroghery are in the Athlone Municipal with the remaining three in the Boyle Municipal and it is also a source of great personal pride that two of the successful villages are in my home parish. Our community groups and activists have been completely selfless when it came to the preparation of these arduous applications,” he said.

Cllr. Kilduff concluded by paying tribute to community groups, Cathaoirleach Laurence Fallon, and Roscommon County Council staff including Majella Hunt and Nollaig Whyte.

Food Drink Ireland call for supports from Brexit Adjustment Fund Food Drink Ireland (FDI), the Ibec sector representing the food and drink industry, has welcomed the announcement that Ireland will receive over €1billion, or 25%, from the EU Brexit fund in 2021, but called for targeted support measures in the sector.

FDI Director Paul Kelly said: “The Irish food and drink sector is by far the most exposed of any sector in any country in Europe to Brexit.

Even with a EU UK deal, we now face additional paperwork, customs and SPS formalities, transport delays and disruption to delivery schedules.

“All these changes are imposing additional costs on businesses and supports are urgently needed, not just to support companies within the food and drink sector, but also the jobs, communities, and downstream suppliers reliant on them, including the farming sector and its longerterm sustainability.

“The publication of Bord Bia’s Export Performance and Prospects report shows the resilience of Ireland’s food and drink sector in the face of unprecedented global chal-

lenges in 2020 with just a marginal 2% decline in exports.

“However, the departure of the UK from the European Union creates challenges for the sector that the Brexit Adjustment Fund can help offset. These supports should be targeted as follows: “Investment in competitiveness –

recognising the additional trading costs now materialising post-Brexit, medium term measures to allow the Irish Government to introduce investment aids to support Irish food and drink companies invest in enabling technology, management training and upskilling, plant renewal and expansion, refinancing,

market development and innovation to regain competitiveness following single market fracture.

“Improve export capability – introduce a state supported export credit insurance scheme to ensure the growing gap in supply of export credit insurance does not impact on the ability of Irish firms to export. Many EU governments have already acted to support our competitors.

“Diversification and innovation – additional funding for direct grant supports for innovation, marketing and trade promotion for companies looking to build new markets in the EU and internationally. Ensure state agencies make full use of the new state aid guidelines to fund up to 50% of research and development projects which support future business growth.

“Direct connectivity to continental markets – ensure sufficient accompanied roll on / roll off capacity for direct ferry routes to the continent.

“Customs skills – provide direct supports to cover the additional ongoing costs associated with developing and maintaining customs clearance capability”.

‘Collective responsibility’ for mother and baby shame Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said there was a collective responsibility from the Church, State, and society for the “deplorable” treatment of former residents of mother and baby homes during one of the darkest periods

in Irish history.

Speaking on Wednesday afternoon, Senator Murphy said: “Today is a landmark moment in Irish history and one which we must never forget because it shines a light on what was one of the most hor-

rible and darkest periods of Irish history. These women and children were treated like second-class citizens and they will bear the scars of their tortured past for the rest of their lives. It was shocking and heart-breaking to hear

that more than 9,000 babies died in these institutions.

“I believe there is a collective responsibility from the Church, State and Society for the abhorrent treatment of these Irish mothers and babies”.

Drugs seizure Gardaí arrested a man (30s) and seized €4,300 worth of cannabis herb in Roscommon town on Thursday, January 7th.

The discovery was made shortly before 7 pm when Gardaí attached to the Roscommon-Longford Drugs Unit stopped a car on The Walk in Roscommon town.

A search was carried out under Section 23 Misuse of Drugs Act and during the course of the search, Gardaí recovered suspected drugs concealed on the man’s person.

The man was arrested and conveyed to Castlerea Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He has since been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecution.

Prison Chaplain denied access due to beard < DAN DOONER

The Castlerea Prison Chaplain, Deacon Seamus Talbot, has been denied entry to the prison due to the Irish Prison Service’s policy which states that all prison staff members must be ‘clean-shaven’.

The Chaplain was refused entry to the facility by the prison governor as part of a health and safety review around conditions during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In a statement released earlier this week, the Irish Prison Service confirmed that all staff must be clean-shaven “to ensure the effectiveness of the facemasks that are required to be worn”.

The prison service added that this was just one of a wide range of measures introduced to mitigate against the spread of Covid-19.

The stand-off has meant that up to 340 prisoners in Castlerea did not have access to the Chaplain over the Christmas period.

It is believed that Deacon Talbot refused to shave his beard, which he has worn for a number of years, when he took up his duties in November and that talks are ongoing to resolve the issue.

Rooskey businessman, Andrew Reynolds, a former election candidate, weighed into the dispute, describing the situation as “deeply unsatisfactory”.

“The stand-off between the part-time chaplain, whom I personally know to be a warm and affable person, has been ongoing for some time now, leaving the facility without a chaplain since early December due to the fact that an order was issued from the prison governor that anybody accessing the prison must be clean-shaven following a health and safety review around prison conditions during the pandemic.

“Deacon Talbot, who was ordained a deacon for the Elphin diocese in 2012, has worn his beard for decades, and refused to comply. He was subsequently denied en-

Photo book celebrating local mosaic traditions < DAN DOONER

Local artist and art teacher, Laura Earley from Mullymux, Roscommon, has just published a new book called ‘Roscommon’s Mosaic Tradition – Geometric and Artistic Mosaics in the Northwest’, a documentary photo book exploring the history of Roscommon’s mosaic traditions.

The book was funded by Roscommon County Council with support from the Creative Ireland Programme. Creative Ireland is a

five-year Government initiative which places creativity at the centre of public policy.

Many of the mosaics in the book were designed and created by Irish Mosaics, which was founded by John Crean in Roscommon in 1952.

Laura says the book’s main focus is on geometric mosaics found on old shop and pub fronts in the west and northwest.

“The photo book is an exhilarating display of colourful photographs that capture patterns and designs of the 1950s and ‘60s. It features

an eloquent introductory text by writer Tom Roseingrave, detailing the trajectory of the project which began in 2018, as well as the history of the industry in Roscommon.

“The book also contains original documents and photographs from those who worked for ‘Irish Mosaics’, and includes references to interviews carried out with local man Sergio Benedetti from Castle Street, who once worked for Irish Mosaics,” she said.

Orla Lyons, a student of Lanesboro Community College, has won 1st place in the BT Young Scientist awards in the Senior Biological category.

Her project, entitled ‘Rising from the ashes: A survey of plants in my local bogs which have been identified as having medicinal properties’, was born out of a desire to do something for her community and help replace some of the employment lost recently with the closing of the ESB power station and subsequent knock-on effects for Bord na Mona workers locally.

She was aware that the market for plants grown in bogs is enormous – literally billions of euro every year – however, as a country, we don’t get any of that because we haven’t developed our bogs for that purpose. So she focused on the medicinal use of plants in her local bogs – and it obviously caught the eye of the judges!

Pictured are some pupils from Tibohine National School with Christmas gifts collected by the school community and donated to Ballaghaderreen Family Resource Centre. Non-perishable foods, toiletries and secondhand toys were also collected and donated to the centre for their Christmas deliveries to those in need. Both collections were hugely successful and we wish to thank our school community for being so generous.

Our columnist on heartless thieves, taking down the Christmas decorations, and – 60 years on – discovering The Chieftains!

Christmas, as I told you last week, is a time of peace and goodwill, and a time when people go out of their way to help their friends, neighbours and sometimes total strangers too. It’s all done in an effort to ensure that the festive season is remembered for all the right reasons, and celebrated in the proper way, while acknowledging the birth of Baby Jesus.

And so a story that I spotted on a national paper this weekend has absolutely knocked me for six. Shortly before Christmas, down in Knockainey in Limerick, thieves broke into Sarah Farrell’s car – which was parked in the driveway of her house – opened the boot and

stole the custom-made wheelchair belonging to her two-year-old daughter, Mia. The toddler is, in her mother’s words, totally paralysed. The wheelchair is her legs, and without it she has no way to get around. As she looks forward to her third birthday this coming week, mother Sarah says the return of the wheelchair would be the best birthday present ever. All she asks is that the heartless thieves have a little compassion and leave the chair where it can be found and given back to her heartbroken daughter.

I have to say that in a world where nothing surprises me, and where there seems to be no end to the depths that certain scumbags will descend to, this one takes the biscuit. Whoever did this vile deed and stole a child’s wheelchair, should, if caught, face the full rigor of the law. If ever there was a case for the return of hard labour, this is it, and even that would be too good for those lowlifes.

However, on the plus side, Sarah has been heartened by the reaction of the community, and has praised the generosity of some peo-

ple, amongst whom was a man who brought a bag of toys for Mia, and others who gave them shopping vouchers. In fairness, there is always a lot of good out there, but let’s all hope the thieves see what a horrible thing they have done and that they reunite Mia with her vitally important wheelchair.

Back to the other side of the coin, and talking about the goodness of people, on New Year’s Eve my heating system decided to go on the blink. As we faced into a spell of very cold weather, we were looking forward to shivering and freezing and dying with the cold, because – as everyone knows – it would be impossible to get any help on the day that was in it. However, there is always hope, and without going into too much detail, my brother-in-law Paul, plumbers Vinny Egan and Fergal Tully and Ward’s Topline shop in Roscommon all answered my phone calls and we got the show back on the road. I am well aware that New Year’s Eve is one of those days when no one can be found, so thanks a million to them all for coming to my assistance.

How I gained new appreciation of Irish culture Even though I am proud to be Irish and would be a passionate supporter of our national teams – and of our wonderful national sports, Gaelic football and hurling – I also have to admit that I have never been as supportive of our beautiful Irish language or as passionate about our amazing Irish music and dance.

For nearly sixty years The Chieftains have represented Ireland with their incredible music all over the world, but apart from when having a few pints in Matt Molloy’s pub in Westport, I have never seen any of them live. In truth, I would have hardly ever even watched them play on the telly. So last evening, when I came across one of their iconic concerts from Montreux in Switzerland in 1997, my first reaction was to press the remote buttons and go to some other channel. Thankfully I didn’t, and I watched and listened to some of the most powerful musical performances that I have ever seen.

Fiddles, bodhrans, harp, guitar, tin whistle, flute, piano, drums, bagpipes and keyboard and probably more instruments all

merged together to produce a mesmeric sound that had the huge Swiss crowd literally baying for more, and I have to say it was just so wonderful to see it.

I realise it is a bit late in my life, as I am now in my 70th year, but from now on I am a fully fledged Chieftains fan, and have it in my bucket list to go and see them in concert if I ever get the chance.

To top it all off, as I browsed through some other channels (lockdown has a lot to answer for), I happened across two Galway brothers, Michael and Matthew Gardiner, who are multiple world champion Irish dancers. I could only marvel at their agility, ability and talent as they danced together at such a speed that you would think them hardly human at all.

These two lads, who are Internet sensations, make up their own dances to every type of music – even rock and rap – but give it an Irish twist. When they dance, they are undeniably Irish! It all made me realise how far Irish dancing has come since Riverdance moved it into the 21st century (well, in 1994, but

you know what I mean).

And so, on this Monday morning – even though it’s a wet, miserable one – I am feeling totally uplifted with my new appreciation of our dance and musical heritage. Hopefully the next time you hear from me I

will be an expert on Irish music, song and dance.

In the meantime, I have to say well done to Paddy Maloney and his Chieftains for putting our music out there for almost sixty years. Here’s to many more years of worldwide success.

This morning, as I was doing away with the porridge and the brown bread (our own homemade version), I was tuned into one of the many breakfast TV shows. I saw two young English girls telling of how they were fined £200 for effectively breaking the UK Covid guidelines.

Their crime was that they drove five miles from their own village, in separate cars, with the intention of going for a socially distancing walk in a deserted park. Sadly for them it wasn’t fully deserted, as five Derbyshire policemen were there. They interrogated the girls, read them their rights, and issued them with on-the-spot fines of £200. The girls, who felt they were being fully responsible by going to an area that they knew would be less busy than other walking places nearer their homes, said they felt they were being treated like criminals.

They added that while there are guidelines in place, there is no law that they had actually broken.

The general reaction is that the police were, in this instance, very heavy handed, and showed a huge lack of old-style cop-on. Today, as myself and Carol drove to Roscommon to collect some of the many medicines that are keeping me alive, we too met a checkpoint, but our experience could not have been more different than that of the Derbyshire girls.

The Garda enquired where we were going, reminded us to wear our masks, talk to no one, be careful, and stay safe. His attitude was so refreshing and caring, and while sometimes we like to have a go at our Garda Siochána, in this instance it was so nice to meet someone who definitely had his fair share of cop-on. Maybe the police across the water could take a leaf out of his book.

And finally…

Finally for this week, I can’t deny that there was a little bit of sadness in the house as we took down the Christmas tree this year. As we put away the baubles, the lights and the quirky little ornaments that have accumulated over nearly 40 years, we reflected on a Christmas that was undoubtedly affected by Covid-19, and which was very different from the usual festive season.

Anyway, sad or not, off they went to their new place of rest in the attic (a year or two ago I thought I had lost everything as I couldn’t find any of the decorations or lights or anything) which means I now at least know where they are. That would have been that, only for me to see on the national news later that evening that the good people of Elphin had agreed to keep up their Christmas trees and lights and everything else until the end of January to show that Covid-19 was not going to put the lights out in their town.

Since then, towns all over Ireland, including Roscommon and Galway city, have followed suit and kept their lights on as well, so well done to the people of Elphin for such an inspiring initiative. Sadly my request to take all the stuff back out was rejected, as the young lad refused to go back up to the attic and my old bones would not manage the trip.

So as all these towns rejoice in their extended Christmas, we are in relative darkness out here and will have to go to Roscommon town to have another look at the lights. However, I don’t think that would be regarded as a necessary journey so it will have to wait until next year – but to all the residents of those towns all I can say is… Happy Christmas!

He was tall, resoundingly loud, perfectly coiffured and preened, but possessed of such a deluge of bullying arrogance and nastiness you felt as if you were in a room with 50 snarling hyenas. It is almost 21 years to this very day that I interviewed Donald Trump, now the most notorious American President in modern history.

Now, don’t get me wrong.

With respect, I’m not some tree-hugging, bleedingheart liberal. In fact, some of which Trump said in the 2016 election campaign that he stunningly won had some resonance: his slogan ‘Drain the Swamp’ – referring to ending the self-serving, noses-in-thetrough indulgence of the Washington political elite and their contempt for working people – struck a chord that a lot of us might like to see in the Oireachtas.

Yeah, right…

Still, the occasion I first met him was the opening of the Trump Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City, a two-hour drive south of New York.

I’d flown over from London, where I then worked as a foreign correspondent for the Daily Mail, to have an exclusive interview with Trump prior to the opening of his massive casino.

It was a disaster from the very start. What I immediately copped on to is that Trump was the biggest BS artist I’d ever encountered. Without wishing to be any ‘Big I Am’, I’ve interviewed former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W Bush, as well as Trump’s defeated rival, Hillary Clinton.

Trump was a different kettle of fish entirely. From the moment he walked in to a vast, soulless conference room in the newly-built casino, I knew there was going to be trouble. He was surrounded by a phalanx of dark-suited security guards

– and they looked about as ‘happy’ as him. What did he need all of them for? Did he think I was some Al Qeaeda suicide bomber?

I stood to shake his hand, as you do, but he completely ignored the gesture. Seated opposite me, he said abruptly: “You’re a Brit, right,” in his grating New

York twang.

“No,” I replied, “I’m actually Irish”.

Trump frowned for a second.

“Is there a difference?”

“Er, yes, Mr. Trump, there’s a very big difference”.

He looked confused, then swatted his faux pas away as if an irritating fly was annoying him.

He then seamlessly launched into a monologue that made me both breathless and bored. “I’m opening the best casino in the world, the very biggest” – had he heard of Las Vegas? I remember wondering – “the most luxurious, expensive resort in the world”.

Trump went on: “You know we have 24 carat gold taps, 24-hour room service, every bar and restaurant open all day and all night. I built this myself, I raised the money myself” – not true, he was given $400 million by his late father – “tonight is going to be the most spectacular night’s opening since the Pyramids,” a comment which made me curious, because according to archaeological records, there doesn’t appear to have been some huge snazzy, similar shindig at the launching ancient Egyptian sites.

But he wasn’t finished yet.

He stood, gruffly. “I have to go now. You watch, both Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Jackson are flying in on my personal jet to be here tonight. I’ll introduce you to them, I promise you’ll get the biggest newspaper exclusive in the world, I’m telling ya”.

He turned robotically, no handshake again, and was out the room, bodyguards following.

Of course, Liz Taylor and Michael Jackson never turned up, just a C-list of so-called celebrities. I was forced to ask a colleague from the tabloid magazine The National Enquirer who on earth they were. “Trash,” was his forlorn reply.

Call it hindsight after the damage he has done, call it cynical journalism, but in my career, I’ve interviewed and investigated more than one scumbag.

But, as said previously, I’ve never come across someone so full of crap and BS as Donald Trump – and again I’m not saying that out of bitter hindsight or with any political bias.

Once a conman and a thug, always a conman and a thug.

After spending time with him one-to-one – and this is 100% true – all I wanted was a long hot shower, which is precisely what I had on return to my home in Manhattan.

Now at least America and the world are rinsing him away themselves.

Driving licenses: Exemption on medical certs for Over-70s The Minister for State at the Department of Health and local Fine Gael TD Frank Feighan has said he welcomed the decision to continue the exemption currently in place for Over-70s that ensures that they are not required to submit a medical certificate in order to renew their driving licenses during Covid-19.

“This measure will have an impact in many homes across Sligo, Leitrim, South Donegal and North Roscommon, and I believe that it is a common sense approach in order to ensure that less people are travelling and interacting for administration purposes, and also that our Over70s are not putting themselves at needleless risk of contracting Covid-19 during this pandemic”.

The Minister of State in the Department of Transport, Hilde-

garde Naughton TD, has announced that in light of the surge of Covid-19 cases, and in order to ease the burden on medical services, there will be an extension in the exemption that allows for those aged over 70 to apply for a driving licence without the need to provide a medical report.

Minister Feighan stated that “what this means in reality is that that persons of 70 years of age or over can continue to apply for, and renew, their driving licence without the need to submit a medical report, on the condition that they do not have an identified or specified illness and are not applying for a truck or bus category.

“Minister Naughton is extending this measure in order to eliminate the need for our drivers over the age of 70 from having to

make an unnecessary journey to their GP, or to the NDLS centre, as we continue to work to minimise social interactions in our efforts to tackle Covid-19”.

Explaining the exemption, which has been extended to June 2021, Minister Naughton said: “All drivers who are over 70 years of age will be contacted directly with an application pack that will allow them to apply for a new licence by post. The NDLS service, which is managed by the RSA, will be sending out application packs to those eligible to apply by post in the coming weeks. The pack will include a partially completed application form that the customer must complete. Those drivers who have the option to apply online can do so at any time at ndls.ie”.

Talks on special education needs ‘must intensify’ Sinn Féin TD for Roscommon/Galway Claire Kerrane has written to the Minister for Education urging that she reconvene negotiations immediately with workers representatives to ensure the return of inschool supports for children with special educational needs as soon as possible.

Deputy Kerrane said: “I have spoken to many families of children with special educational needs who are understandably incredibly frustrated at this time.

They were hopeful given the Minister for Education’s promises last week that their children were to be supported during this difficult time and have been left extremely disappointed when that did not happen.

“Unfortunately, any plan that didn’t include the whole school community, staff and families in the discussion was not going to work. It is frustrating for these families that the government had the time to put in place a Plan B for special education and did not do so, which meant a plan was cobbled together over the course of 48 hours.

“Children with additional needs are the cohort that missed out the most when schools closed last spring and were among the greatest victims of the last lockdown.

“The focus now must be on ensuring that engagement with workers representatives happens urgently.

In my view, there is a desire among those working in special education to return to school provided that this can be done safely”.

4,000 children ‘waiting over a year for psychology treatment’ Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has said she is “shocked and saddened” by lengthy waiting times for child and adult psychology treatment, adding that the HSE cannot use Covid-19 as an acceptable excuse.

Deputy Kerrane was speaking following the response to a parliamentary question stating that over 10,000 patients are currently waiting for psychology treatment.

HSE figures show that 9,000 of those waiting on treatment are children – with more than 4,000

children waiting over a year for an appointment.

“I was both shocked and saddened to receive a response from the HSE that stated that over 10,000 people are waiting on psychology treatment,” Deputy Kerrane said.

“These lengthy waits are not only completely unacceptable from a medical point of view, they are causing enormous stress and anxiety to the children and families stuck on endless lists.

“The waiting times vary signifi-

cantly depending on what area of the country is looked at. For example, in counties Roscommon, Galway and Mayo, there are 1,218 children aged under 17 years waiting for a psychology appointment.

“In the response, the HSE seem to be using Covid as an excuse for the delays in treatment, but these delays were happening years before we ever heard of Covid.

“These waiting lists are as a result of years of underinvestment in the provision of mental health services by successive Governments.

“The government and the HSE have a duty to do better by these children.

“It is vital that real efforts are made to address these waiting lists. Such deficits in mental health services for children cannot be allowed to continue.

“The Government needs to stop playing the old-fashioned threecard trick, where children are moved from list to list without receiving this essential treatment,” she concluded.

In the call of Samuel and the first Apostles, today’s readings shed light on our own calling to be followers of Christ.

Notice in the Gospel today that John’s disciples are prepared to hear God’s call. They are already looking for the Messiah, so they trust in John’s word and follow when he points out the Lamb of God walking by.

Samuel is also waiting on the Lord – sleeping near the Ark of the Covenant where God’s glory dwells, taking instruction from Eli, the high priest.

Samuel listened to God’s word and the Lord was with him. And Samuel, through his word, turned all Israel to the Lord (see 1 Samuel 3:21; 7:2–3). The disciples too heard and followed – words we hear repeatedly in today’s Gospel. They stayed with the Lord and by their testimony brought others to the Lord.

These scenes from salvation history should give us strength to embrace God’s will and to follow His call in our lives.

God is constantly calling to each of us personally, by name (see Isaiah 43:1; John 10:3). He wants us to seek Him in love, to long for His word (see Wisdom 6:11–12). We must desire always, as the apostles did, to stay where the Lord stays, to constantly seek His face (see Psalm 42:2).

For we are not our own, but belong to the Lord, as Paul says in today’s Epistle.

We must have ears open to obedience, and write His word within our hearts. We must trust in the Lord’s promise – that if we come to Him in faith, He will abide with us (see John 15:14; 14:21–23), and raise us by His power. And we must reflect in our lives the love He has shown us, so that others too may find the Messiah.

As we renew our vows of discipleship in this Eucharist, let us approach the altar singing the new song of today’s Psalm: “Behold I come . . . to do your will Of God”.

Trump’s extremism leaves a lingering rot across the US Following years of using social media to spread misleading information and conspiracy theories, attack and abuse journalists and make attempts to amplify bias and bigotry (even trying to provoke arguments with other country’s leaders), Twitter has finally ‘permanently suspended’ outgoing US President Donald Trump’s account. However, unless he’s removed from office before his tenure ends next Wednesday (at the time of writing he’s still clinging on), Putin’s pet (despite having no social media platform) will still manage to hold onto America’s nuclear codes… how spine-chilling is that?

I will admit that as a columnist, Donald Trump’s actions and tweets have, for me, (rightly or wrongly) served as media gold! And while many may insist his rantings have radicalised and united his disciples (sorry, followers) to flock together, it must also be said he’s done this without ever appearing to give one iota of concern to the long-term effects or the potential damage he may have/has caused.

Due to this, it’s my opinion that while Trump is vacating the White House, he’s never, ever going to vacate our lives.

Nay, I think it’s the mark of this megalomaniac to become even more extreme, meaning

he’ll goad his band of devotees to descend deeper down that rabbit hole, thus intensifying those Make America Great Again (MAGA) hoodlums’ ever-increasing lust for causing damage and destruction.

We only have to look at last week’s shenanigans whereby, having failed to secure a second term as POTUS, even launching an embarrassing legal bid to try and overturn that loss to Irish-American Joe Biden, Trump, through his incendiary speech, initiated a full-scale riot. Indeed, as I watched the scenes unfold at the US’s most powerful symbol of the country’s democra-

Why I respect and admire home-schoolers Readers who are parents may, I’d imagine, be finding home schooling stressful and challenging – especially those trying to hold down a full-time job from a makeshift home-office in a cubbyhole under the stairs.

Mind you, the government’s constant schools-will-open-oh-no-they-won’t-ohyes-they-will u-turns won’t help what’s clearly an already fraught situation. Indeed, as many of us grapple with coronavirus-related fears around job losses, paying bills, keeping safe and staying sane, I’d imagine that for those who also have school-age kids to contend with, life right now must be like balancing on a cliffedge.

Suddenly the situation the country finds itself in has forced these poor parents to become amateur mathematicians, Gaeilgeoirí and history buffs; and I have to tell you folks, I salute every one of you.

I could never home-school, for the simple reason my lack of patience would not only

traumatise the poor kids, it would also psychologically wound me to the extent that I’d probably end up running screaming from the house, eyes wild, hair standing on end… oh, and a bottle of vodka clutched in my hand. Believe me; I’d need some manner of intoxication to dilute those tween-age dramas!

In addition, I could never cope with only having small children to chat to every single day. Every. Single. Day!!!

Nor could I do all the prep-work needed to satisfy several different levels, i.e. primary, junior cert and leaving cert, all while trying to meet work deadlines, care for our dogs, keep the house clean (I cannot endure untidiness), and cook meals, all whilst explaining Pythagoras Theorem and breaking up a sibling argument.

Nope, the logistical and psychological nightmare of home schooling is defo not for me – I’ll stick to lecturing adults. However, those who are attempting it have my unyielding respect and admiration.

I’ll tell you folks, this intellectually immature Toddler-inChief will not lick his wounds and quietly slither away next week. On what do I base those thoughts? Well Trump did hint there was something in the pipeline when he said, “our incredible journey is only just beginning”.

On the other hand, it’s likely Trump will have some legal issues to keep him busy when he leaves the White House.

For one, he’s facing a probe regarding alleged ‘hush’ payments made to two women (prior to his 2016 election) who claim to have engaged in, let’s say, ‘sexual relations’ with him. Trump denies these claims. However, as he’ll no longer be a sitting president, he’ll have lost the legal protections related to that role, meaning his luck will have run out and the threat of facing prosecution will now become real. This may keep this self-obsessed ‘loser’ (as he has called many people) occupied.

Then again, it may not. Even as the carnage mushroomed last week, Trump, fuming and seething, addressed his mob and instructed them to ‘remember this day forever’.

I have absolutely no doubt that nobody – including right-thinking people – will ever forget it. Neither will anyone forget the four years that this numpty has spent cultivating a class of extremism so contagious it has left a lingering rot, not just within Trump’s own party, but on the US as a whole. Joe Biden has a difficult term ahead of him; I wish him all the luck of the Oirish… he’s gonna need it.

He was happy to turn a blind eye when she posed naked to flog her latest fragrance, oh and her farcical attempts to break the Internet.

So what went wrong with the union between Kim and Kanye Kardashian-West, the world’s most cosmetically enhanced, photoshopped, disgustingly rich, attentionseeking, posturing peacocks?

Personally, I thought this pair was about as solid as her boob implants. But no, as I write, brand Kimye’s lawyers are busy negotiating how they’ll dole out the pair’s billons!

Over-emphasis on wind energy could lead to shortages < MICHAEL FITZMAURICE, INDEPENDENT TD

T

here is a real danger of an energy shortage in Ireland due to an overemphasis on renewable energy produced by wind, which would be detrimental to attracting foreign investment to the country.

Looking at preliminary data for December, there was a total of seven days in December when wind energy only met approximately 20% of the actual demand, and on three of those days that figure was below 10%.

If you look at recent figures on the Eirgrid website, the level of actual wind generation has struggled to get above 1,000MW at any given time. On December 6th, the level of actual wind generation dropped to just 2MW for a period of time.

On the other hand, if you look at recent figures for demand, those rarely drop below 5,000MW from 8 am in the morning and demand usually peaks in the evenings at approximately 6,700MW. Now this Government and its Green Agenda will point towards a lofty target of increasing the generation of electricity via offshore wind turbines by 5GW by 2030; but

Green Economy is all well and good, when an energy shortage occurs and Ireland loses employment as a result – it will be the people who will suffer most. And where will all the high-ranking CEOs who led us down this path be? More than likely retired to greener pastures.

It is time politicians woke up. I predicted this a few years ago and now it is coming to pass. I am led to believe that the IDA cannot guarantee multinational companies, who want to set up in this

country, a reliable power supply and that companies looking to set up data centres, for example, are being advised to incorporate their own on-site energy generating stations.

If that is the case, then we might as well hold up a sign saying we are closed for business.

If the government and the IDA do not take immediate action, then it will cost the country jobs.

Decisions are being made now which will have an impact for years to come, and we cannot be idle on

this matter.

Recent media reports indicate that the Single Electricity Market Operator (SEMO) issued an amber alert to power suppliers last Wednesday (January 6th), due to a fear over potential power cuts.

There are a number of industries, including pharmaceutical, which depend on a continuous supply of power and there are detrimental consequences if a power cut occurs. We cannot afford to let these amber alerts become the norm.

these targets will remain aspirational if the national grid isn’t upgraded to accommodate the additional power.

We can try and generate all the power in the world, but if we can’t create it at times when it’s needed then the efforts will be pointless.

I believe the decommissioning of the power plants in Shannonbridge and Lanesboro is a rushed move which we may live to regret.

I am also led to believe that private companies approached the ESB with a proposal to run these power plants on fuels other than peat – but their approaches were turned down.

If we continue to place all of our eggs in one basket, it could come back to bite us. What if we experience a prolonged period of reduced wind power?

Have we any back-up organised? We need to ask ourselves if we are just cutting off our nose to spite our face?

‘Meitheal’ grits Tarmonbarry to Rooskey road! < DAN DOONER

local group has fol-

lowed through on its promise to grit a section of the Tarmonbarry to Rooskey road following a number of road traffic accidents caused by icy conditions on the route.

Independent councillor Tom Crosby has previously stated that it wasn’t advisable for the group to carry out the work due to health and safety and insurance liability concerns, but local man, Seán Browne (75), said he decided to raise a Meitheal anyway.

“My own jeep suffered €2,500 in damage following a skid on the road and I was travelling at less than 40 miles per hour. I approached Cllr. Crosby and the area engineer and said local residents could grit the road. While they were sympathetic, they said the answer from the ‘higher ups’ was no. If there is damage caused by a pothole you can contact the council and make a claim, however there are no signs on the road to warn drivers of freezing conditions,” he said.

Seán said he procured the gritting material in Kilglass and salt from North Dublin and with the help of other local residents, formed a Meitheal to grit one of the more dangerous sections of the road.

“We used up all the material that was in the trailer.

We did it during daylight hours and there was someone warning oncoming traffic while we worked.

“Some people were reluctant at first but I did a bit of a Michael O’Hehir on it and commentated on the group’s progress and it helped to raise spirits.

“But while I’m all for using a bit of humour, there’s nothing humourous about (skidding on the road and) heading straight for a stone wall!”

Following the group’s gritting exploits, Seán now believes the point has been made and says it’s time to move on.

“I’m a busy man and I don’t have the time to take over the role of the local authority. It’s up to local people to look after their own interests and use democracy and it’s up to local authorities to get their fingers out and work with communities in order to come up with solutions.

There is no point in having a democracy if you cannot use it,” he said.

ndependent TD Denis Naughten has received confirmation from the Minister for Agriculture, Charlie McConalogue, that he and the Minister for the Office of Public Works, Patrick O’Donovan, are to meet next Wednesday to explore measures to address the ongoing threat of flooding within the vicinity of Lough Funshinagh.

A further meeting is to also take place with the key State stakeholders, which was previously agreed to by Minister O’Donovan at the request of Denis Naughten, which was made following the continual rise of flood waters over Christmas and revised flood data provided by Cllr. Laurence Fallon.

“The meeting of stakeholders is

expected to include all of the key players including the OPW, Department of Agriculture, Roscommon County Council, National Parks & Wildlife Service and the Geological Survey of Ireland which has been monitoring the situation on Lough Funshinagh over the last five years,” stated Denis Naughten.

“At the request of Cllr. Laurence

Fallon, I have also contacted Minister Malcolm Noonan, the Minister with responsibility for the National Parks & Wildlife Service, seeking an immediate review of the Special Area of Conservation status of Lough Funshinagh in light of the impact the flooding is having on the functioning of the former turlough,” Deputy Naughten concluded.

Lough Funshinagh crisis worsens

‘Overflow pipe remains the only solution’ < DAN DOONER

llr. Laurence Fallon has said he would welcome a meeting of key stakeholders to explore the ongoing threat of flooding at Lough Funshinagh but warns that the only solution to the worsening situation is the introduction of an overflow pipe to the turlough.

The Roscommon County Council Cathaoirleach was reacting to confirmation that Minister for the Office of Public Works, Patrick Donovan, is set to bring key players together to discuss possible solutions.

“The flooding is currently seven inches off its peak of last April and will definitely exceed the levels of last year,” Cllr.

Fallon said.

“At the moment, there is severe pressure on one house and one farmyard is already flooded while two more are under pressure.

“This is an escalating problem year on year and it’s one that keeps getting bigger. I’m like a broken record at this stage, but the only solution in order

to save the local habitat and save seven homes and farmland, is to introduce an overflow pipe. It’s there in black and white,” Cllr. Fallon said.

The Independent councillor said that due to the height of surrounding lands, the turlough is unable to drain itself and unless something is done soon it will cost millions of euro to relocate residents.

“The sooner an overflow pipe goes in there the better because if it doesn’t the entire ecology of the area will be affected and it will then be an issue for the EU. “The use of the Home Relocation Scheme is something that I would accept if at some point we knew the lake could go no higher, but there’s no end to it.

“Why continue to take fire brigade actions when for €1.5 million you can save homes, farms, and what’s left of the local wildlife?

“It’s all well and good people saying ‘save the lake’ but if someone came down (to investigate the ecological impact), I

wouldn’t be so sure that it meets NHA (National Heritage Area) and SAC (Special Areas of Con-

versation) criteria. There is nothing living there but fish.

“I always welcome a

gathering of minds but if they are closed to the only solution, then it’s a waste of time,” he concluded.

he ‘Ballinasloe Says No’ group are urging members of the public to lodge submissions in respect of a new application for a permit to operate a waste transfer station in Ballinasloe, County Galway before Friday (January 15th).

The application is a follow-on in response to the relevant permit declined by Galway County Council in January 2020 and the successful High Court action on the previous infill permit in 2018

to build the waste transfer station at Poolboy, Ballinasloe.

Over 2,300 people in the local community of Ballinasloe lodged objections to the plans. Those objecting had serious concerns about the potential environmental impact because of the close proximity to low-lying areas of the River Suck.

The ‘Ballinasloe Says No’ group was formed in opposition to the plans because of these concerns, fears over air pollution and also because they state that the inappro-

priate location of a waste transfer station in Ballinasloe would force hundreds of 30-tonne trucks through the streets of the town.

The application is available for public viewing at Galway County Council.

Dr. Vincent Parsons, Chairperson of ‘Ballinasloe Says No’ campaign along with Senator Aisling Dolan, PRO and Secretary of the group, and Dr. Evelyn Parsons, Galway county councillor, say the structure would have a disastrous environ-

mental impacts to the low-lying flood plains of the River Suck Callows.

Concern over issue of timber felling licences

T

he Forest Owners Co-operative Society (FOCS), which represents private forest owners in Co. Roscommon and elsewhere throughout Connacht, Munster and Leinster, has pinpointed inordinate delays in the issue of timber felling licences and urgent action to tackle and control the spread of Ash Dieback disease as the two greatest issues facing its members at the present time.

So pressing have both issues become, that unless both are tackled by Government as matters of extreme urgency, the forestry industry will suffer enormously, livelihoods will be lost, and all targets that Government have set for the sector will be undermined, FOCS believes.

With increasing volumes of finished timber now being imported, employment in a sector that currently generates some 15,000 jobs is at risk. Moreover, with the average

grower exposed to losses that could be as high as €100,000 and more in situations whereby trees may lose condition or suffer wind blow when left un-harvested, FOCS believes that urgent action is necessary to address the speed of issue and the number of felling licences granted if growing concerns amongst forest owners is to be eased and confidence restored within the sector and in associated industries.

Noting the ‘significant deterioration’ in the issuing of felling licenses that has impacted private forest growers during 2020, FOCS has pledged to apply its full resources towards removing obstacles that have reduced the flow of felling licences to a virtual trickle compared to previously. In this regard, it is seeking a meeting with Minister for Agriculture, Charlie McConalogue to help resolve any impediments existing in the process and agree a

workable strategy for the future.

Another major objective facing FOCS in the coming year – one that will be included in matters FOCS intends to raise with the Minister for Agriculture given its urgency – is the damaging impact that Ash Dieback disease is having on Ireland’s forest plantations.

FOCS claims that measures currently in place to deal with Ash Dieback disease are completely inadequate, pointing to the fact that many ash plantation owners are excluded from any assistance and many have suffered significant loss.

In this regard, chief executive Dr Kathryn O’Donoghue said that FOCS is determined to give its full support to ash plantation owners whose livelihoods are affected by the onslaught of this disease by pressing Government for radical change to the measures employed to deal with replanting and

clearing as well as the provision of compensation.

“In order to expand the sector in line with Government targets, it is vital that we encourage more young farmers and landowners to see the opportunities and rewards that forest

ownership can bring.

However, only through active engagement and cooperation at Government and EU levels can real progress and a more efficient use of state resources be achieved”, Dr O’Donoghue added.

A heartbroken Waterford man has told the Roscommon People how he spent three nights sleeping in his car in a local retail park over Christmas in the hope of finding his beloved cat who went missing in Roscommon town last month.

Paul Power, who lives in Tramore and is chairperson of the Helping Hand homeless charity, says his pet cat, Millie, was last seen in the Centrepoint Retail Park.

He said: “When the re-

strictions lifted just before Christmas my wife Amy and I went to visit family in Ballina. We’ve had Millie for nine years and this is the first time we had nobody to take care of her at home so we decided to bring her with us.

“We stopped off in Roscommon town on the way back to Tramore on the 21st of December and Millie jumped out of the window in the car park outside Homesavers.

“We spent an hour and a half searching for her in the town and we also reached out to the Roscommon SPCA, who have been brilliant in setting traps and circulating a description of Millie to local residents.

“I drove up from Tramore on the Tuesday before New Year’s Eve and spent Tuesday night, and Wednesday and Thursday nights sleeping in my car and searching for her for a few hours during the day.

“I was also out during the night setting traps around the town and out in the local countryside. I was like David Attenborough hiding behind bushes with a headlamp – if anyone had seen me!

“Una from the local SPCA has been out in the last couple of weeks searching but we’ve had no sighting of Millie since the New Year. With the cold weather, I have been very worried about her, but

Cllr. Anthony Waldron is seeking an extension from Roscommon County Council of the closing date for applications for Grant aid under the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS).

Closing date for applications has been set for Friday, January 22nd 2021 and he proposes that this deadline should be extended due to the Level 5 restrictions currently in place.

It is Cllr. Waldron’s belief that this Scheme can provide a valuable resource for rural landowners to upgrade their access on non-public roads to land in isolated areas.

The local contribution is set at 10% for eligible roads, with up to and including five beneficiaries and is set at 15% for those with six or more beneficiaries. In addition, works can be carried out on Amenity roads such as non-public roads that lead to important community amenities such as graveyards or other tourist/heritage sites.

Funding for Boyle welcomed Former local election candidate Andrew Reynolds has warmly welcomed the recent announcement by Minister for Rural and Community Development Heather Humphreys of a €100,000 boost for Boyle, Co. Roscommon, as part of a €2 million allocation on an expanded scheme, aimed at enticing people to return to live in town centres.

Boyle was one of six towns chosen to partake in the scheme, alongside Callan in Co. Kilkenny, Ballinrobe in Co. Mayo, Banagher in Co. Offaly, Castleblayney in Co. Monaghan and Cappoquin in Co. Waterford. The scheme aims to “develop innovative proposals to encourage more people to live in rural town centres”, whereby each town was asked to look at a variety of factors that deter people from living in these towns, including the buildings, amenities, public realm, infrastructure and services, and asked to address the issue of vacant buildings in the town in question.

Speaking this week, Mr. Reynolds said this is “a good news story for Boyle, and a welcome start to the New Year, with even more good news on the way as the town’s Fire Station is set to benefit from an estimated €30,000 upgrade/refurbishment thanks to a new €61 million Fire Service Capital Programme.

“It’s a positive start to 2021 after a difficult and deeply challenging year, and let’s hope it’s a turn for the better,” he concluded.

Kerrane: ‘Extend Fuel Allowance to PUP recipients’ Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane, the party’s spokesperson on Social Protection, has called for the extension of the Fuel Allowance to recipients of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment.

She has said that recent bad weather combined with increased public health restrictions that will put tens of thousands of people out of work mean that this emergency measure is desperately needed.

Deputy Kerrane said: “Many of these workers and their families are relying on substantially reduced incomes at a time of very difficult weather.

“This highlights the necessity to ensure that workers and families can afford to heat their homes adequately at a time when people will be spending most of their time at home.

“Fuel poverty is rife. It affects young families and older people, those who are working and those who are unemployed, renters,

and people who are paying mortgages.

“Addressing energy poverty must become a priority for this government. The last strategy to combat energy poverty lapsed in 2019 and here we are in 2021 and the situation has deteriorated.

“In the short-term, the government should support Sinn Féin’s call to extend the Fuel Allowance to PUP recipients”.

There is uncertainty surrounding the holding of the Allianz Football Leagues the year, as the GAA at national level grapples with the financial implications of another Covid-influenced year and the effect it will have on the staging of their main competitions.

A meeting of county treasurers last week was told that the association is looking at a loss of €17 million for 2021, and the football and hurling leagues might have to be abandoned this year as a cost-saving measure. In any event, the worsening public health situation may require the association to cancel the leagues.

County teams were due to re-start training from January 15th, but that has now been put back until the end of the month.

All indications are that this scheduled resumption will be pushed back even further.

With the certainty that there will be no crowds able to attend matches, the GAA may well decide not to hold the league competitions and instead concentrate on the inter-county championships and club scene later in the year. It is expected that a decision on the leagues will be made in early February.

Former Western Gaels manager and Galway footballer John Donnellan will be on the Michael Glavey’s backroom team in 2021. He will assist team manager Eugene Coggins.

Decie Hoare, who has served as a Roscommon minor and senior selector in the past, has been appointed the manager of Roscommon Gaels’ senior football team. He succeeds Liam McNeill, who spent six years in the position.

Shane to feature in ‘Laochra Gael’ series Former Roscommon footballer Shane Curran is one of twelve wellknown GAA figures who is being featured in a popular TG4 sports’ series.

‘Laochra Gael’, back for a 19th series, features twelve Laochra with genuine star quality and reveals deeper, fresh and sometimes unexpected insights into the lives of these icons.

Last week the Roscommon People reported that Roscommon senior hurler Shane Curley has announced his retirement from inter-county competitions.

Shane made his debut in 2003 and he has had a long and distinguished career over an eighteenyear period.

This week, Brian Carroll, Roscommon GAA County Chairperson, has paid tribute to Shane, saying: “I would like to thank Shane for his dedication to Roscommon GAA over a career that lasted nearly two decades. He was a fine hurler and a brilliant role model to all players, both young and old. I wish him all the best on his well deserved retirement”.

Four Roads Hurling Club also wished their player the best. “The very best of wishes to clubman Shane Curley on his retirement from the Roscommon GAA senior hurling team. He gave his very best for the team. He was an example of hard work and commitment to all young players – enjoy the break, Shane”.

While their sporting careers continue to provide the backdrop to the story, the series travels well beyond the four white lines. Gripping personal storylines will compel viewers to travel towards territory unique to the GAA television landscape.

Shane Curran will be featured on Thursday night, 28th of January (9.30 pm). Shane’s story is probably well known to most sports fans in

Roscommon. At one point mooted as a future soccer star, ultimately he concentrated on Gaelic football, going on to become one of the most colourful characters in the game.

Whether he was causing chaos – as with a controversial penalty (in a Connacht Minor Final) – or literally spilling his own blood as Roscommon captain, you couldn’t keep your eyes off ‘Cake’.

Behind the antics was a deadly serious competitor, the prototype of the modern playmaking goalkeeper, who warmed the hearts of the nation when he finally won his All-Ireland medal with his club at the age of 40.

Meanwhile, Kildare great Dermot Earley, son of Roscommon legend Dermot Senior, will also feature in the series (on Thursday, 11th of February).

The Roscommon Gaels Club Lotto draw took place on Sunday evening.

Aidan to receive top Sport Volunteers Award Roscommon’s Aidan Farrell will receive nationwide recognition for his dedicated work with Creggs Rugby Football Club this week, as he will be awarded the Roscommon award at this week’s virtual Federation of Irish Sport Volunteers in Sport awards, proudly supported

by EBS Mortgage Masters.

Aidan has been a driving force behind Creggs RFC, including overseeing the completion of the First World Rugby accredited 3G pitch in Connacht, as well as two new grass pitches – all of which are available to local schools and sports clubs. His love of sport in general and his awareness of the importance of sport in the development of young people has driven him to bring this development – and indeed the club itself – to new levels that all of the local community are both proud and thankful for. Aidan’s vision of opening up the sport to all includes targeting young girls and women to be-

come involved in sport, and the club policy of making their facility available to schools and other sports clubs has increased participation for hundreds of people from small children to adults.

He has given, and continues to give, countless hours of his time and expertise to both Creggs RFC and Roscommon CBS and has been extremely generous in his sponsorship of other sports through his business. Aidan will be honoured this week at the special virtual awards ceremony.

The Volunteers in Sport Awards were created to champion the contribution, commitment and dedication of the army of 450,000 volunteers across the country that go above and beyond by giving their time to Irish sport and physical activity each year. These volunteers dedicate some 37.2 million hours across the country’s 13,000+ sports clubs and associations every year.

There was no racing on turf in Ireland last weekend due to the cold spell of weather Racing was confined to flat on the all-weather at Dundalk Friday and Monday.

The Clonmel meeting this day week fell to the weather with the track unraceable due to frozen ground. The meeting at Fairyhouse on Saturday was postponed after an inspection on Friday morning and was run on Tuesday. The Sunday meeting at Naas also was cancelled after an inspection on Saturday and refixed for yesterday.

There is no racing today and tomorrow action is on the all-weather at Dundalk with racing starting at 15.45 pm.

Saturday’s racing is in Fairyhouse away 12.30 pm featuring the Grade A Dan and Joan Moore Memorial Chase and Punchestown race on Sunday at 12.50 pm and they race again on Monday at 1.05 pm.

At Naas yesterday, Henry de Bromhead’s Bob Olinger ran out an impressive winner of the Grade 1 Lawlor's Of Naas Novice Hurdle in the hands of Rachel Blackmore. The 6/4 favourite beat the WP Mullins trained Blue Lord and Gavin Cromwell’s Gabynako by 6½l and 2¼l, respectively.

The big meeting across the channel was at Chepstow where the Welsh Grand National and the Grade 1 Coral Juvenile Hurdle took place. There were no Irish challengers for either race and Adagio won the hurdle for David Pipe and Tom Scudamore with Welsh trainer Evan Williams providing Adam Wedge with Secret Reprieve, the favourite to win the National. NH jockeys are a law unto themselves as Wedge had to be “patched up”, after suffering a crashing fall off Espirt Du Large in the handicap chase and then, when, in contention, came down off Clyne three out in the handicap hurdle, to take the mount on Secret Reprieve. Creggs Rugby Club shortlisted in €100,000 fund Aviva Ireland is delighted to announce that Creggs Rugby Club has been shortlisted to share in a fund of €100,000.

The club was nominated by Aengus Oates of Aengus Oates Financial Services. The Aviva Broker Community Fund provides an opportunity for financial advisers/brokers throughout the country to help support their local charities or community organisations that are making a difference in their area. The winners will be announced at a virtual ceremony on Friday, January 15th, 2021.

Now in its third year, the Aviva Broker Community Fund, which was launched last September, has a total fund of €100,000 to donate to worthwhile projects completed by charities and community organisations. The Aviva Broker Community Fund will make thirty separate donations, broken down as follows: one charity donation of €20,000 to the best submission, (plus four runner-up donations of €5,000 to the shortlisted charities), three local community organisation donations of €10,000 to the best submissions (plus two donations of €5,000 to those shortlisted community organisations), and €1,000 donated to twenty charities and community organisations drawn from the list of those entries not shortlisted.

Creggs Rugby Club is one of five community organisations shortlisted and is therefore guaranteed to receive a minimum donation of €5,000. Some 130 applications were received from financial advisers, an increase of 13% on the previous year.

65% of applications received were in the community organisations sector.

Creggs RFC is about inclusion and is unique in developing its new facilities, not solely for rugby but for the needs of its community.

Yesterday the Irish National Hunt Steeplechase Committee announced the immediate suspension of the point-to-point season following updated Government guidance that point-to-point racing will no longer be included in the category of professional and elite sports permitted to continue behind closed doors. This means that this weekend’s meetings at Tinahely in Wicklow, Ballycrystal in Wexford and Carrigarostig in Cork are all cancelled.

From Saturday, amateur jockeys can no longer ride in Britain after the BHA released a number of changes to the race programme. Amateur riders are classed as grassroots sports participants and the new rules are in line with government restrictions around the definition of elite sport.

British racing's governing body confirmed that hunter chases will continue to take place this season, but only professional jockeys or conditionals will be allowed to ride.
