HSE: ‘Try to avoid hospitals’ WINTER FOCUS ON COMMUNITY SERVICES < PAUL HEALY

Finishing Touches

The HSE has unveiled a Winter Plan for Roscommon Hospital and its fa-

cilities across the west, but one local TD says promised staff appointments are unlikely to be made until the spring, at best! Announcing details of the initiative this week, the HSE said its aim is to reduce pressure on acute services by increasing access to community services and providing more sup-

ports for patients in their own homes. The HSE says it wants to minimise admissions to hospitals – including Roscommon University Hospital. Unveiling a Joint Winter Plan for Roscommon Hospital and Community Healthcare West, Tony Canavan, CEO of Saolta

University Health Care Group said the steps being taken will “increase access for patients to a wider range of services in the community, decreasing demand on acute facilities”. The HSE says it wants to avoid hospital admissions where possible and “promote patient flow across all acute and community healthcare facilities through an integrated approach”. The HSE has pledged to recruit a number of staff, including in respect of services in Roscommon. However, Sligo-Leitrim TD Marian Harkin has taken a sceptical view on the promises relating to new staff appointments. Deputy Harkin said that she asked the Minister for Health for an update in relation to mooted staff appointments referenced in the Winter Plan for Sligo and Letterkenny University Hospitals, and was told (by the HSE) that a recruitment process “is due to get underway to commence filling all of the approved posts”. Deputy Harkin responded: “This means that winter will be well and truly on the way before any appointments are made and very likely it will be over before all staff are recruited – that’s looking at the best possible scenario”.

090 647 8433 Land Purchase www.bccsolicitors.ie and Taxes

I hope to buy some agricultural land in the coming months. I would like some advice on the likely taxes I may have to pay. I understand that I will have to pay stamp duty, is this correct? Are there any other taxes I should be aware of e.g. Capital Gains Tax, Capital Acquisitions Tax? The rate of stamp duty payable on agricultural land or commercial property has increased in recent years. If you purchase agricultural land or other commercial property then stamp duty at a rate of 7.5% of the land value currently applies. E.g. if you purchase land for €200,000 then stamp duty of €15,000 is payable. Interest and penalties will also be payable if the stamp duty is not paid within the requisite time period. However, under the Young Trained Farmer relief, a full relief from Stamp Duty is available if the purchaser of the agricultural land is under 35 years old and is the holder of a specified educational and training qualification. Capital Gains Tax (CGT) is a tax payable on the profit made on the disposal of investment property i.e. the sale of any property other than your principal private residence. The rate of CGT is currently 33%. This tax will not affect the purchaser of property. It is a matter for the seller only. Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) is only payable upon receipt of a gift or inheritance. In the event that you purchase land at full market value then no Capital Acquisitions Tax will be payable. If however, land or other property is transferred from one party to another for substantially less than its market value Revenue may treat this transaction as a gift, and CAT may be due. E.g. If you purchase land from a family member for €50,000 and the known market value of the property is €150,000 then Revenue will look upon this transaction as containing a gift from one relative to another of €100,000. The rate of CAT is currently 33%.

‘Desire’ for Bono’s book – and Musk-eteer comes out fighting

If you were involved in a cycling accident contact

Byrne Carolan Cunningham Solicitors

Hey, what do you think of that mega-rich egomaniac, you know…the guy that’s been in the news all week? Who? Bono? I LOVE Bono! Can’t wait to get his book! I even tried two bookstores for it last week, but it wasn’t in stock. Still, gave me an opportunity to tell the friendly shop assistant ‘I still haven’t found what I’m looking for’. Made their day, I’d say…you obviously really ‘Desire’ it. What have you got against Bono? I’m not talking about Bono! The superwealthy guy, he’s all over Twitter, he’s ruthless and… Trump? Is it Trump? Is he back on Twitter? NO! Well, not yet! I’m talking about the guy who BOUGHT Twitter. He’s ALL OVER the company this week! What’s his name again? Musk! Elon Musk! THAT’S the guy you’re on about! Yeah, he’s the richest person in the world! Made his cash through electric… Gates… No, not electric gates. Electric cars! Musk runs Tesla, the company that makes electric cars! I didn’t mean electric gates, I was wondering about BILL Gates. I thought HE was the richest man in the world… Oh you’re way out of touch! He was passed out a long time ago. He’s only worth 99bn US dollars! What’s Musk worth? 200 billion US dollars!

Endangered Species The barstool boyos

Wow! And where is Gates going wrong? Huh? I mean, why is he stuck on 99bn, surely he can make it to 100? Well, he’s trying, he’s trying! (They pause to check for any updates on the ‘No Bounty Bars in Celebrations tubs’ controversy)

PIC OF THE WEEK:

This column is prepared by Dolores Gacquin, Solicitor. Byrne Carolan Cunningham have offices in Athlone, Moate, Lanesborough and Galway.

So, what do you think of him? Bono? No, Musk! Well, am I right in saying he’s caused a bit of a rumpus since he took charge of Twitter this week? A BIT OF A RUMPUS? He’s fired 3,700 staff worldwide, including some at Twitter’s European HQ…in Dublin. Oh dear, that is quite shocking. It’s also a lot of face to face meetings, or maybe he did it all by Zoom… On the contrary, Twitter employees received heartless emails, informing them they were being dismissed. Oh dear, Elon’s suddenly my least favourite multibillionaire… Yep, same here…anyways, it’s a mad world. Agreed! Hey, I’ve to collect something in town. Do you fancy a pint? Oh, I dunno, it’s quite early in the evening… Maybe, but I have an excuse! I’m going back to that bookstore before it closes, the lady said she’d keep me a copy of Bono’s book. Mmnn…I dunno about a pint this early… Are you coming or not? It’s the 200 billion dollar question! Time is money! Make your mind up! I need Bono! I can’t decide, I… Well I’m going…with or without you!

MOTORISTS REPORT DELAYS OF UP TO AN HOUR < PAUL HEALY

Motorists who have voiced frustration over long traffic delays on a busy road near Athlone can be prepared for the roadworks in question continuing right up to the busy Christmas period, and possibly into the New Year. Motorists contacted the Roscommon People in recent days to voice frustration over the extent of the delays being experienced. Roscommon County Council has said it too has been fielding a number of queries. One motorist who contacted the Roscommon People said delays of up to an hour are being experienced. She commented: “This is a massive inconvenience for workers, shoppers, people trying to attend for important appointments, etc. I appreciate the works are prob-

ably necessary, but could they not have been undertaken in the summer during the long evenings?” Roscommon County Council says it regrets any inconvenience caused to motorists. The resurfacing works in question are on the N61 Athlone Road between Barrymore and ‘Ganly’s roundabout’. The works commenced in early October, with the Council saying they will be ongoing for “10-12 weeks approximately”. That raises the likelihood of the works continuing right up to Christmas. The Council acknowledged that it has received queries from members of the public in relation to the delays. In a statement issued last Friday, the Council said: “We’ve received a number of queries in respect of traffic flow along the N61… Roscommon County Council wishes to advise road users that delays can be expected due to ongoing

roadworks being carried out on N61 between Barrymore and Athlone. Ro-

scommon County Council regrets any inconvenience caused”.

President Higgins leads tributes to Brian O’Doherty < DAN DOONER

President Michael D Higgins has led tributes to renowned Ballaghaderreen-born artist, Brian O’Doherty, who has passed away in New York at the age of 94. A spokesperson for the Arts Council confirmed that Mr. O’Doherty, described as one of the pioneering generation of conceptual art, died on Monday. President Higgins said it was with “deep sadness and a sense of loss that people throughout the arts world

will have heard of the death of Brian O’Doherty. Mr. O’Doherty, he continued, left “an enduring legacy” following his rise to prominence in New York but had never forgotten his homeland. Born in Ballaghaderreen in 1928, Brian O’Doherty studied medicine at UCD before moving on to postgraduate studies at Cambridge University and the Harvard School of Public Health. While in Harvard his love of art inspired a career change and he presented an arts programme on Boston

public television, succeeding art historian Barbara Novak, who later became his wife. O’Doherty and Novak moved to New York City in the later 1950s, where he worked as an art critic for the New York Times and as editor of numerous art magazines. In 1972, in protest of the Bloody Sunday killings in Derry, he assumed the pseudonym ‘Patrick Ireland’ at the Irish Exhibition of Living Art in Dublin. It wasn’t until 2008 that he buried an effigy of Patrick in a ceremony at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, and resumed working under his real name. His work is also held in private and public collections including the Irish Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the George Pompidou Centre in Paris. He was honoured with the Freedom of Roscommon in 2018.

Martina is Roscommon’s ‘Family Carer of the Year’ Family Carers Ireland, the national charity supporting Ireland’s family carers, is delighted to announce that the 2022 Netwatch Roscommon Family Carer of the Year is Martina O’Leary from Bealnamulla. Martina, who is mother to Abi (16), Leon (10) and Kyle (6), cares full-time for her two sons. Kyle has been diagnosed with Chiari malformation, a rare condition in which brain tissue extends into the spinal canal and can cause severe pain, and Syringomyelia, which causes fluid-filled cysts to form within the spinal cord. He underwent brain surgery in 2019, but there is no cure for his condition. Leon suffers from chronic migraines which can cause him to pass out and he has spent much of his life in and out of hospital. Husband David, who nominated Martina for the award, describes his wife as an “amazing woman” who always puts others first and deals with whatever life

throws at her, even with just two or three hours sleep at night. Martina also helps to care for her mother who has been ill. Now in their 15th year, the Netwatch Family Carer of the Year Awards seek to recognise and shine a light on the remarkable contribution of the more than half a million people in Ireland who provide care at home to loved ones. Family Carers Ireland Community Support Manager for Roscommon, Bernie Dowling said: “Caring for a loved one at home can be rewarding but it can also be challenging, particularly in the absence of vital supports and services including respite. Carers are doing extraordinary work that is too often unseen and undervalued. “These awards are an important event in our calendar every year as we seek to provide some small recognition to all of those who care at home for loved ones with additional needs and to ensure their stories are heard”.

Roscommon Gaels GAA Club were among the winners at the 2019/2020 MacNamee Awards presentation which took place in the Cusack Suite at Croke Park on Saturday night last. President of the CLG 2018-2021 John Horan presented the award to Ollie Moran, Development Officer at the club, who was the main instigator in nominating the club in the ‘Best New Media’ category. The topic of entry on the submission was based on a video created by the club for a national competition sponsored by TG4 and Subaru Ireland promoting the club’s ‘All Stars’ initiative. In 2020, the club was delighted to have been announced as a winner of the 2019 award and thanked Oliver and Michelle Moran, Declan Walsh, Tommy and Liz Mulry and Orla Fleming for the work involved in creating the video. Representing the club on the night were chairperson Phillip Mullen and Bernadette Mullen, Oliver and Michelle Moran, Liz and Tommy Mulry, and Shane and Orla Fleming.

PAUL HEALY’S WEEK A column by Roscommon People editor

THURSDAY Twitter freefall “The bird is freed” Elon Musk said the other day, as he finally forked out $44 billion to buy Twitter. He said nothing about ‘freeing’ almost 4,000 staff of the company, a process which Twitter’s new owner has now commenced. It’s been cold-hearted culling too; the exiting employees (some of them based in Ireland) being told of their fate in unsigned emails, while their offices were ‘temporarily closed’. For a groundbreaking communications company to embark on such an impersonal, ruthless ‘Ending it by email’ blitz isn’t without irony.

FRIDAY Talking to Joe(s) In the Shannonside Radio studio with JF and JF; that’s host Joe Finnegan, and Fianna Fáil LongfordWestmeath TD Joe Flaherty (Isabelle Flanagan joins us on the line). It’s good to catch up with Deputy Flaherty. We go back quite a long way. It’s over 30 years since Joe began his journalistic career with us in the Roscommon Champion. Memorably, he ‘cycled to Barcelona’ for the 1992 Olympics, but I digress. After a few years covering sport in Roscommon, Joe moved to the Longford Leader, and rose to the position of Editor, and later rose higher still within the management of Johnston Press newspaper group. He was elected to the Dáil in 2020. It’s been quite the impressive upward career curve for Joe, who hails from a popular and well-known business family in Lanesboro.

SATURDAY Rugby rollercoaster Virgin Media brings us Ireland versus world champions South Africa at the Aviva Stadium. It was a tremendous contest, marked by

paul@roscommonpeople.ie

fierce physicality and unrelenting intensity, the atmosphere in the stands fantastic. South Africa were on top early on, but Ireland defended superbly and then hit the Springboks with two tries in a blistering start to the second half. Ireland – currently ranked the world’s number one side – edged a great game by 19-16. On this form, and if all key players are available, we will be serious world cup contenders next year.

SUNDAY Juniors & Jungle In Strokestown, the Roscommon Junior Football title went to Padraig Pearses. St Ronan’s had a great campaign, but the crock of gold just slipped from their grasp. Hard luck to Ronan’s, and congratulations to Pearses. Their epic drawn final a week ago was a joyous example of great sporting combat. Later, we watched ‘I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!’. Such shows (Big Brother and Love Island spring to mind) attract lots of snobbish commentary, but for millions of viewers, they offer enjoyable escapism on long winter nights. I’ve never watched Love Island, but ‘I’m a Celebrity’ is a favourite in our house. After its Covid-dictated diversion to a castle in Wales, the show is back in its familiar Australian jungle. Tonight’s opening episode introduced us to ten campmates, including Boy George (reputedly being paid £500k), and Mike Tindall. Former UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock, whose decision to take part has led to an angry public backlash, will at some point appear as the I’m a Celebrity equivalent of an impact sub. Actually, while I would normally have no issue with politicians ‘dumbing down’ for reality TV, I find Hancock’s participation to be extremely distasteful. Some people are annoyed that he’s abandoning his constituents; others focus on the alleged £400k he’s being paid. I’m with those who consider it to be shockingly insensitive of a man who was UK Health Secretary

while thousands of people died in a pandemic to, a relatively short while later, partake in a show of this trivial (if entertaining) nature.

MONDAY Him…again? So, so confusing… First, I was sure I saw him on two or three TV programmes, all in the space of 24 hours. Dermot, that is. Dermot ‘Omnipresent’ Bannon. I saw him a few times on the telly, alright…either in the current series of one of his regular shows, or maybe in a repeat or two, or maybe it was him chatting (again) to Ryan…the two of them in hysterics, the perplexed audience wondering why (but laughing, as a courtesy). I just keep seeing Dermot. I turned the TV off, because that way, Dermot couldn’t be as…present. But then I turned the radio on, and he was chatting to some (apparently) captivated presenter about something to do with…houses, I guess.

When I drove into Roscommon town, I realised this is getting out of control. I thought I saw Dermot everywhere…popping into a café, grinning on Main Street, chatting to two smitten ladies outside a supermarket. It can’t have been him, can it? I wondered if there are two or even three Dermot Bannons. I mean, it would explain that omnipresence. Surely the celebrity architect hasn’t been cloned? I began to worry, not for myself, but for Marty Morrissey. If there’s more than one Dermot Bannon, Marty’s multiple broadcasting roles could be under threat. Later, on the RTE website, I saw even more Dermot; he was chatting to Angela Scanlon on some new chat show. Initially, I froze, then convinced myself to watch, in case there might be some profound insights. Dermot revealed that he stole a tea towel from Daniel O’Donnell. These relentless sightings of Dermot/Dermots are beginning to bug me. In every instance, he is gushing, saying ‘wow’ – and looking extremely satisfied with himself. It must be a recurring dream, mustn’t it?

TUESDAY Mutiny on Bounty In this fast-moving world of bountiful breaking news, it’s hard to keep up with everything. I gather however that there’s been a (sweet) storm in a tub over the revelation that Bounty Bars are to be removed from Celebrations’ tubs in the UK in the build-up to Christmas. This unsavoury move is in response to consumer research which revealed that Britons get very annoyed to discover that Bounty Bars are inevitably the last ones left in the tub. The good news for Bounty Bar fans in Ireland is that we are exempt from the Bounty banishment. Two more thoughts: What a mouthwatering week on the PR front for Mars Wrigley (makers of ‘Celebrations’). Secondly, and I know it would be impossible to police, but surely the more pressing challenge relating to Christmas chocolates is the eternal issue of people eating all the ‘hard ones’ first?

Calls for clampdown on illegal parking in Roscommon town < DAN DOONER

A local woman is calling on Roscommon County Council to clamp down on instances of illegal parking in Roscommon town, claiming that there has been an increase in the number of vehicles using disabled parking bays illegally. Roscommon town woman, Dorothy Coyle, who was born with Spina Bifida and is confined to a wheelchair, says the issue has been exacerbated following the opening of the new-look Town Square. “I pay €35 every two years for a disabled parking badge and it breaks my heart,” she said. “I work in Roscommon town and there have been many occasions where someone without a badge has been parked in the disabled spaces or parked over the line and reducing space for those who need it. When it’s mentioned to them it doesn’t seem to register”. Dorothy’s husband Paul says he is “sick and tired” of asking motorists to move their vehicles. “I really thought it might improve with the new Square and with increased CCTV but it’s still a major problem,” he said. A Fixed Charge Notice for misuse of a disabled parking permit

is set to be introduced in the New Year, but both Dorothy and Paul remain unconvinced it will have any meaningful impact. “The problem is that there is no enforcement and the only way to stop it from happening is to have a traffic warden in the town,” Paul said. “You wouldn’t get away with it in the likes of Westport or Athlone, where there are wardens on duty throughout the day”. Dorothy, who says the couple have received verbal abuse from some motorists in the past, has been an advocate of the ‘Make Way Day’ campaign, which raises awareness around street obstacles for wheelchair users. “There are certain days when you have to arrive very early in to get parking in disabled spots in Roscommon while it’s impossible to get parking at any time of day on other days. It makes life harder when you’re in a wheelchair and have to park further away,” she said. “Campaigns like Make Way Day are all well and good but they’re soon forgotten about with no real results. There has to be more follow through. There needs to be more awareness the other 364 days of the year and more enforcement. Full STEAM Ahead at Roscommon Community College Considering the announcements for the 2023 BT Young Scientist Competition finalists, it has been another successful year for science students at Roscommon Community College. RCC Science Department has the highest number of projects in County Roscommon selected for this prestigious national competition. Speaking on behalf of the Science Department, the Head of the Department, Dr Joanne Broggy-Shea, attributed the school’s success to the student’s work ethic, critical thinking skills and sense of self-directed learning. Students are supported through the cross-curricular and collaborative work carried out by the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) Departments. This engagement is evident in the various projects submitted within the different competition categories of Technology, Social and Behavioural Science, Biological, Ecological

and Chemical, Physical and Mathematical Science. We would like to recognise the support given by our Principal, Ms Georgina Keena and our team of dedicated teachers, Ms Niamh Conway, Ms Elizabeth Glancy, Mr Mak Hounat, Dr Jude Lohan, Mr Connall Moore, Ms Ceire O’Reilly, Ms Shauna O’Neill, Ms Alison Kerrane, Ms Joanne Cleary, Ms Georgina Martina, Ms Claire Gibbons, Mr Stewart Li, and Mr Joe Mannion. Enabling students to engage with competitions such as BT and SciFest allows students to investigate all STEAM fields and particularly highlights the world of possibilities outside of the classroom. The sense of accomplishment our students gain when they can add to the body of knowledge already in existence within their research area is life-changing. Teaching students research methodologies empowers them to open their minds to creativity, innovation

and development. Working in this environment alongside their mentor develops their curiosity and visual literacy, critical thinking and analytical skills collaboratively. These are the future skills our students need to navigate their career pathways successfully. Through their project, students become self-directed learners and learn to work as part of a team effectively. Speaking of his success at BT last year, 5th-year student Séan Allen noted the impact of engaging in BT and SciFest on his career path: “I couldn’t believe the doors it opened for me; one minute, I am in a lab in RCC measuring plant growth and the next, I am invited to work with agricultural science professors at the Atlantic Technical University (ATU). It is an unbelievable experience, and it has completely changed my approach and understanding of school and third-level education and training.” Furthermore, great enthusiasm

and vibrancy came from RCC Mathematics Department, where they were just after celebrating Maths Week 2022. In addition to the in-house maths workshops for the various year groups and staff, there was a collaboration with local primary schools. 6th class students from our local primary schools (Tisrara N.S, Fuerty NS, Ballymurray NS, Curraghboy NS, Gaelscoil de hÍde and St. Joseph’s NS, Glenamaddy) participated in the RCC Maths Mastermind Challenge. The goal of the RCC Maths Mastermind Challenge is to promote problem-solving and critical thinking in mathematics through a challenging yet engaging mathematical experience that is both competitive and educational. Alongside the Mastermind Challenge, our Transition Year students conducted several maths workshops with St. Coman’s Wood Primary School. Such workshops were carefully developed by the maths teachers and students at

RCC to place maths in context and actively promote the critical skills of STEAM, fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving. The maths workshops encouraged students’ creativity while engaging, motivating and crucially challenging the students of 6th class. Each participant worked hard to figure out the clues that ‘Professor Square’ had for them! Through a range of problem-solving activities, students were given the opportunities to practise skills with numbers, shapes and concepts in exciting, imaginative and interactive ways. RCC Science Department looks forward to Science Week Ireland 2022 which will run for all RCC students 13th - 20th November 2022. This much-anticipated event is supported by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) and aims to promote the benefits of learning about science.

The STEAM initiatives alongside the arduous work and dedication of the teachers and students in RCC have paved the way for students in third-level education and beyond. Notably this year RCC was delighted that some of the graduating class of 2022 were recipients of several prestigious scholarships. This year the school was awarded the George Moore ‘No Mind Left Behind’ scholarships. These impressive scholarships have the financial support of €4,000-€5,000 per annum for 4 years. Ms Keena, the Principal, has said how proud she is of the learning environment and the ambitious standards of academic and personal development in Roscommon Community College that have culminated in the amazing achievements of the students and staff alike.

County representatives hoping to Scór at All-Ireland finals!

< DAN DOONER

The star-studded cast of Noel Dervan, Cathy Dervan, Sylvia Kilcline, Stephen Murphy, and Anita Hanley, along with mentors Tracy Frawley and Caroline Dervan, will be hoping to deliver St. Dominic’s first Nuachleas All-Ireland title in Scór Sinsir this Saturday.

All roads lead to Castlebar this weekend as Roscommon clubs compete in the All-Ireland Scór Sinsír final at the TF Theatre on Saturday night. Roscommon was well represented in all eight disciplines at Connacht level, taking home the Cormac McGill Cup for best participation and most victories and there are strong hopes for national silverware to round off another impressive season. Elphin are competing in no fewer than three events this weekend: Tráth na gCeisteanna, Rince Foirne and Rince Seit. The north Roscommon club’s very first Scór title came in Tráth na gCeisteanna back in 1972 while they have also won Rince Seit All-Ireland ti-

tles in 1998 and 2001. St. Ronan’s GAA Club has a busy weekend in store as their junior football team take the field at Dr. Hyde Park for the Connacht Club Championship and their Ceol Uirlise Group hoping to add to their back to back Connacht titles in Castlebar this Saturday. Meanwhile, fresh from their Intermediate Football Championship success, St. Dominic’s will represent Roscommon and Connacht in the Novelty Act with their production of ‘Heaven Can Wait’. This will be Dominic’s second attempt at All-Ireland gold having represented Connacht last year at the Connacht Centre of Excellence. The Dominic’s cast boasts some of the most ‘seasoned’ individuals Roscommon has to offer.

As well as boasting two Connacht titles in the Novelty Act competition, members also have multiple provincial titles in Ballad Group competition, and have guided the club’s Scór na nÓg stars to a number of victories over the last few years. Tickets are still on sale for the Scór Sinsír All-Ireland Final in Castlebar this Saturday at a cost of €20 for adults and €10 for U-16s. Contact participating clubs or log on to ticketmaster.ie.

Valerie Duffy named Roscommon’s ‘Most Inspirational Person’ Valerie Duffy from County Roscommon is celebrating this week after being named Roscommon’s Most Inspirational Person at this year’s Gala Retail Inspiration Awards with Virgin Media. Valerie’s extensive and inspirational work within Roscommon’s various community groups have earned her the title of Inspirational Person in this year’s awards. The local woman is a volunteer with multiple community groups including Moore Community Council, Moore Community Playground and Camcloon NS Board of Management, and has been a cornerstone in securing thousands of euro in funding for various projects. The community now boasts a playground, a refurbished community hall and a muchneeded play area in one of the local schools, which Valerie played a vital role in achieving. From a huge volume of nominations, 26 county heroes were crowned. Noreen Murphy, from Bantry in County Cork, was named as the Overall Inspirational Person of the Year for her services to mental health with the establishment of Lisheen’s House Suicide

The Sanctuary Runners are calling on people in towns across Roscommon to come together to form new running, jogging, and walking groups.

Prevention Charity. According to Gary Desmond (CEO of Gala Retail), choosing the winners was a challenging task: “We’ve heard some truly inspirational stories from people across Ireland during these awards, which has affirmed something we already knew – that we have so many selfless people carrying out great work in our communities. “Now in their fourth year, the Inspiration Awards pay tribute to people who play a key role in creating a better country for us all. Operating in communities throughout Ireland, Gala Retailers have seen first-hand

some of the great work that people have been doing and we are proud to have been able to recognise some of these inspirational individuals. “We were overwhelmed by the level of nominations and Valerie along with the fellow inspirational heroes are true examples of people who are making Ireland a better place. Congratulations Valerie and all our county heroes!” he concluded. Gala Retail has gifted €26,000 of prizes to the winners, with the 26 county winners being awarded with €1,000 hotel getaways across Ireland. For further information, see gala.ie.

‘Sanctuary Runners’ coming to Roscommon? The Sanctuary Runners are calling on people in towns across Roscommon to come together to form new running, jogging, and walking groups. Launching their new ‘SideBy-Side’ programme last week, the solidarity-throughsport initiative, founded in Cork in 2018, says it hopes to build groups in 50 new towns across the country. Focusing on community integration and bringing people together to the benefit of all, the initiative will focus on areas to which Ukrainian and other people have moved in recent months and years. Supported by the ‘Ireland

for Ukraine Fund’, and ‘the Sunflower Foundation Fund’, both managed by the Community Foundation for Ireland (CFI), as well as support from the CFI itself and the One Foundation the new ‘Side by Side Programme’ will build on the work of the Sanctuary Runners which has attracted the support of almost 10,000 runners, joggers and walkers over the years – with almost a quarter of those being people who either are, or were, living in Direct Provision. Ailís McSweeney, Ireland Lead Manager with Sanctuary Runners said: “We’ve al-

ready received great support from the people of Roscommon for our work. This new programme will seek to build groups in towns to which people have moved in more recent times – people from Ukraine and also those from other countries. “We’ve seen over the years how running or walking shoulder-to-shoulder on one team can be such a vital tool for community integration, for welcoming people who might be afraid, isolated and worried – and also for building stronger communities. Also, it’s lots of fun and good for everyone’s health”.

FRANK

BRANDON

FRANK BRANDON’S unique

take on life ...

Rugby thrills and (unwelcome) spills! Our man Frank on how another trip to Knock Shrine proved enlightening; Ireland’s great win over South Africa (with some unwelcome spills); A last hurrah in the antique store…and the Drumshanbo company that floored ‘The Rock’! Anyone who follows rugby will know that the world champions, South Africa, were in town on Saturday. I actually had a ticket for the

game, but something cropped up and I found myself watching it in the quiet of my sitting room. The truth is I was more than happy to be ‘parked’ in front of the telly. There is no doubt that when you are actually at a game, whereas the atmosphere can be brilliant, you can miss a lot of the live action. In contrast, you simply cannot miss a thing while relaxing on your (hopefully) comfortable couch. And if ever a game needed to be watched in its entirety, this was it – because it turned out to be one of the most compelling games I have ever seen. The Irish victory was a fitting reward for each and every one of the players on a team that simply refused to be either beaten or bullied. Irish coach Andy Farrell was correct

when he said that even if they had lost he would have been just as proud of his team. Despite everyone knowing that nothing is won in November, it was a powerful marker laid down by Ireland with the World Cup coming in September 2023. Meanwhile, on Monday’s newspapers there is a lot about the new type of rugby followers, who seem to be only there for the beer, and who, with their constant visits to the bars, make life very difficult for the ‘true blue’ diehard supporters. I don’t know the answer to this annoyance, but something needs to be done, as this type of conduct is rife in all the big stadia! I told you before of my friend, the late Jim O’Rourke, who got soaked in Cardiff when a

Still learning about the wonders of Knock! It’s Friday morning and Carol and myself decide to hit for Knock, a journey that we have often undertaken down through the years. Even I would admit that there can hardly be anything new about our visit to the Co. Mayo shrine. And yet there was, because firstly we attended the midday Mass for the first time ever, and I have to say it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience and the priest had a very pleasant interaction with the reasonably big attendance. At the close of the Mass he told us of the various places of interest around the Shrine. When he mentioned the museum and its treasures, we realised we had never once visited it, and so decided there was no time like the present. What an eye-opener it was.

There was all kinds of stuff from way back in the old days, including a fully authentic old-style kitchen, a properly equipped forge, loads of old farm implements, a Penny Farthing bike, and a huge array of further interesting artefacts. There was loads of stuff dealing with the airport, and the two Papal visits, and several letters from pilgrims who claimed to have experienced different types of cures in Knock. There was also an area where we learnt about the 15 local people (and their very ordinary backgrounds) who witnessed the apparition way back in August 1879. I have to say I was delighted to have visited the museum. How we had never been there before is a bit of a mystery, but at least

we’ve had the experience now. We then paid the almost mandatory visit to the shops which really have an extraordinary range of religious goods on sale, and to round off the day we dropped into Val’s Bar & Bistro in Ballyhaunis for the lunch. Now I have to admit that we don’t eat out very often, but on Friday Val’s was extremely busy, underlining the fact that other people obviously dine out quite a bit! The lunch was served up quite quickly and both of us agreed the fare was excellent and really good value. When next you go to Knock (if you ever do; if you don’t, you should) make sure you visit the museum – and if you are hungry on the way home, Val’s is definitely worth a visit.

supporter sitting behind him toppled over and sprayed ‘The Gunner’ with several pints of some type of beer, thereby ruining the whole experience for Jim. Tickets to these games are outrageously expensive so the least one can expect is to be able to watch a game in comfort.

Glencar Waterfall (part 2)

Staying with rugby and you may recall that I told you last week of our trip to Clogher Valley and our illfated detour to take in the beautiful Glencar Waterfall. A reader called Gerry Taylor (from

Carrick-on-Shannon) has kindly got in touch to tell us that the Waterfall is only five minutes’ walk from the car park. Gerry adds that it is really beautiful and well worth a visit. He says it was a huge opportunity missed. So all I can say is we were a little rushed because of the rugby game, and had to cut our visit short – but I promise him that we will return some day soon. We will bring the original line-up back, i.e. my brother Duff, my son Mark and myself, and maybe even one or two more, and we will finally get to experience the fabulous wonder of nature that is Glencar Waterfall. It has long been on my bucket list – so hopefully this time we will actually see it.

Braving elements for a last hurrah in antique store! It’s Wednesday morning of last week, and I am heading for Athlone to give my old employer, Lynn Antiques, a dig-out as they prepare to host what will sadly be a closing down sale. One of the sales lads is on a day off and it shows how hard it is to get retail staff when they have to turn to me to give a hand. Indeed the difficulty in getting staff is one of the main factors in the decision to close down (in Athlone). After almost 12 years they are going back to their original home in Mullingar. Everyone else in the company, apart from me, was from Mullingar and it became increasingly difficult to run the two stores. Anyway, I agreed to help out for the day, and what a day I picked! For more than 20 years I worked in Athlone and I never ever experienced driving conditions like it. If you can remember, Wednesday of last week was the day when we had everything that the weather could throw at us…with gale-force winds, torrential rain, frightening thunderstorms, and occasional falls of hailstones (even a tornado in Wexford) all leading to chaos on our roads. There were floods everywhere. At times it was almost impossible to keep going. A journey which used to take me 35 minutes lasted an hour and a bit. To tell the truth, the driver (that’s me) that finally arrived in Athlone was a nervous wreck. Thankfully we had loads of

customers, despite the horrific weather, and meeting and greeting a number of old friends made it all worthwhile and I thoroughly enjoyed my return to the workforce, even if only for a day. (The good news for our customers is that we have to be out by the end of the month, so there are lots of bargains available. So, call in to Lynn Antiques, and who knows what you might find!).

And finally… The Wine Enthusiasts Wine Star Awards are literally the Oscars of the drinks world. Drumshanbo’s Gunpowder Gin recently won the International Spirit Brand of the Year, beating – among others – Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s own Teremana Tequila. The gin from the little Leitrim town was the only Irish entry. To take the top prize was an amazing achievement for the small Irish distillery. The Rock himself congratulated the Drumshanbo company, and has promised to try out their very popular product, so well done to all concerned – it’s a real good local success story. ‘Till next week, bye for now

Danny was the referee that day.

Social evening in aid of Kilteevan Community Hall A social evening will be held in Kilteevan Community Hall on Saturday, November 26th. All funds raised by this event will go towards keeping the doors open and the lights on in your local community hall this winter. The Kilteevan Community Hall is a hub that is available for all the community to use. However, coming off the back of two very difficult years where everything was restricted due to Covid-19, and then coming straight into an energy crisis, the venue has been finding it more difficult to keep the doors open and the lights on. So far, the cost for utilities in 2022 has already significantly surpassed the costs for the total year last year. You are hereby invited to join us on Saturday, November 26th, at our ‘Help Keep The Lights On Community Social Evening’. This will be an adult-only, BYOB (Bring Your Own Bottle) event. Tickets are limited to a maximum of 100, cost €30 per person, and includes your entry, a three-course meal and a ticket in a prize draw that will take place on the night. Hopefully, this will be the first of many community events to take place there in the near future, with plans to relaunch the Development Committee and the Community Hall for the benefit of the entire Kilteevan community. To book your ticket, please call Dion Hegarty on 087 6333700. If you cannot make it to our event but would like to make a donation, please let us know and we will arrange to collect it. The Kilteevan Community Development Group Committee would like to thank everyone for their continued support.

Dublin Marathon retires bib 216 in Archie’s memory Roscommon mum Paula Naughton and her husband Padraic issued a heartfelt thanks to Jim Aughney, Race Director, Irish Life Dublin City Marathon for the incredible gesture of retiring bib number 216 in memory of their late son Archie. Bib number 216 was the last bib number Archie had when he completed the marathon as an assisted runner in 2019. Archie was a huge fan of the race and completed it three times before his untimely death in July at age 16. At the recent Dublin Marathon, Archie’s brother Isaac and ‘Team Archie’ were out in force in his memory. Mile 16 on the day was in Archie’s honour and memory and a huge number of competitors wore something orange to remember Archie and all children battling Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. With a target of €5,000, donations to ‘Team Archie’ can still be made via a dedicated webpage: https://www.idonate.ie/ fundraiser/IssacandTeamArchierunningDCMforArchie.

Miriam’s

MUSINGS

Words of wit and wisdom with MIRIAM KERINS

It’s about time the State apologised and exonerated historic consensual activities between gay men Last Friday we heard how a ‘working group’ is examining the development of a process that will serve to disregard convictions for consensual sexual activity between men which occurred prior to the decriminalisation of homosexuality in 1993. As part of this ‘examination’, our Department of Justice launched a public consultation survey which will feed into creating a scheme that will, I sincerely hope, dismiss such convictions, restoring the good names and reputations of those men who were affected. While this initiative is welcomed, given, (as I understand, under the Government’s Justice Plan 2022), the final findings from the working group examining the response to the survey were scheduled to have been submitted to Minister McEntee by the end of Q3, it’s clear that our Government has fallen behind schedule. To that end, as the deadline is 5 pm, Friday 9th of December, (i.e. Q4), would it be fair to wonder if

perhaps, (to keep things on schedule), it’s possible the overall process might become a tad rushed? If that’s the case, then how can we be certain the wrongs inflicted on these poor men, and on their families and loved ones, will not only be properly addressed, but also be remedied? Just throwing that question out there. I don’t know about you readers, but I find it very difficult to digest the fact that nearly 30 years ago, prior to the 24th of June 1993 when the Decriminalisation of Homosexuality legislation finally limped its way into law, Irish citizens were classed as criminals for loving the ‘wrong’ person. Of course we mustn’t forget how, during the 1980s, the devastating condition, Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) meant that not only did gay men face the horrors of becoming infected, but, thanks to a lack of public education and a number of high profile scaremongering campaigns, they were egregiously

branded with spreading ‘the gay plague’. But I digress… The piece of legislation which essentially stopped treating gay and bisexual men as second class citizens – the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences) 1993 Bill – was proposed by Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, the then Minister for Justice. I have to note how fitting it is that, 30 years on, another female Minister for Justice is, in a bid to remove the stigma of those who were discriminated against, trying to, in her words, ‘contribute to the healing process’. Well done to both of these ministers. I hate to point it out…okay I don’t, but isn’t this proof, (if it were ever needed) that, in order for us to attain an equitable Irish society, as well as a properly functioning democracy, the full and active participation of women in government is not just necessary, it’s essential? However readers, while the 1993 Bill and the more recent Marriage Equality Act 2015 were revolution-

ary, it seems that many beautiful LGBTQ+ people are still, sadly living with shame. Of course that’s down to the fact that certain individuals (yes Fr Seán Sheehy, I’m referring to you), have archaic fire-and-brimstone opinions on the matter, the latter preaching that same-sex relationships and transgenderism were mortal sins. Oh, and apparently by supplying free condoms to teenagers, the HSE is, in Fr Sheehy’s eyes, ‘promoting promiscuity’. I firmly believe everyone’s entitled to hold their personal opinions, and I will always support our fundamental right to freedom of speech. However, when those opinions are based on a reactive emotional preference they become dangerous. When those opinions are blind to all logic and when they incite hate, they turn from being valuable to being harmful. Furthermore, when they’re publicly expressed from the pulpit by the same Catholic priest who pro-

Is Elon Musk a problem solver or a problem creator? Following months of legal wrangling, the world’s richest man, Elon Musk (his net worth is around $203 billion) is finally, (scarily some would say) in control of one of the world’s largest social media networks, i.e. Twitter – with the negative effects of his takeover already taking hold. No sooner had he entered the Twitter building (carrying a sink, yes, he waltzed in, big grin plastered on his face, white bathroom sink clutched in his paws), Musk began the process of culling his workforce. In a bid to drive down costs at Twitter, the Tesla CEO – who strangely likes to think of himself as a man of the people – brutally cut his global workforce by 3,700 members; many of them Irish workers who were callously and disgracefully informed of their pre-Christmas fate by way of an email. Yes folks, it seems the man with the mega-brood – one of which is called X – who also has a desire to colonise Mars, (the planet, not the chocolate bar), likes to think of himself as a bit of a problem solver. However, given the backlash following his indifferent ‘you’re no longer working here’ message, which may be an illegal move given he allegedly didn’t comply with our collective redundancy legislation, the heartless ‘Chief Twit’ could have effectively opened the floodgates for a raft of unfair dismissal claims. That would make him a problem-creator! Methinks acquiring ownership of the world’s so-called most influential social media platform while taking on debt, cutting his costs, pandering to his fans, pleasing his supporters and not provoking his haters is not going to be the massive knees-up the maverick media mogul thought it was going to be! Something’s gonna give…watch this space!

vided a character reference for a convicted sex offender in 2009, they not only become invalid, they also become a ferocious attack on our civil rights to live with dignity and in peace. Of course not all members of the clergy buy into Fr Sheehy’s inflexible methods. There are wonderful priests throughout the country coming up with innovative ways to get the ‘bouncy castle’ parishioner like me, who only shows up at church for family communions, confirmations and weddings, back to Mass. However, sadly, even as we never seem to hear about these lovely priests, it’s only fair that this week, given Fr Sheehy’s toxic sermon, we acknowledge them for their humanity, their compassion and their forwardthinking. Will you grow a Mo for Movember? It’s Movember, the one month in the year when men across Ireland will be sporting moustaches in a bid to raise funds and awareness around men’s health, and, in particular, around prostate and testicular cancer. Well done lads! Personally, I’m one of those women who finds moustachioed and bearded men to be very attractive. Indeed, I find a well groomed, mo-and-beard-combo, with a hint of grey thrown in for maturity, to be extremely manly – kind of almost adding a wilderness vibe to the face – but that probably falls under the TMI rule! But here’s the thing…you don’t exactly have to grow a ‘mo’ to get involved lads. You can, if you wish, host a fundraising event such as a karaoke night, a soccer match, just give a donation, or you can ‘move for Movember’ by doing a sponsored run, walk or swim! If you log onto www.cancer.ie you’ll find out more about their fundraising and awareness events happening across Ireland.

HSE unveils Winter Plan for Roscommon Hospital, the west The HSE has unveiled plans this week to reduce pressure on acute services in the west by increasing access to community services and providing more supports for patients in their own homes. Pledging to recruit more staff across its range of services and facilities, the HSE says its aim is to minimise admissions to hospitals – including Roscommon University Hospital. Unveiling a Joint Winter Plan for Roscommon Hospital and Community Healthcare West, Tony Canavan, CEO of Saolta University Health Care Group said the steps being taken will “increase access for patients to a wider range of services in the community, decreasing demand on acute facilities”. The HSE says it wants to avoid hospital admissions where possible and “promote patient flow across all acute and community healthcare facilities through an integrated approach”. It says the initiatives will maximise the use of available resources to manage unscheduled care pressure and support an overall improvement to the patient journey. An enhanced GP/ Hospital Liaison will support the provision of care, “in the right place at the right time”. In relation to planned staff recruitment, the HSE says it intends to recruit an Advanced

Nurse Practitioner and a Senior Speech and Language Therapist to support a pilot in Older Persons services in Roscommon. It further intends to recruit two Healthcare Assistants in the community to allow more timely discharge of patients back to the community (with supports in place at home). A Medical Social worker will also be recruited, as will a Data Analyst to support the rollout of digital solutions across community services. This, the HSE says, will help avoid unnecessary hospital attendances for patients. Additionally, Community Healthcare West (CHW) will continue to provide rehabilitation, respite beds and short-stay beds to target admission avoidance and rapid discharge. Both Roscommon Hospital and CHW will provide enhancement of GP Access to Diagnostics and Out-of-Hours (OOH) supports. Mr. Canavan said: “These measures will ensure we can provide the best possible support to the population in the coming months. Ultimately, reducing long waiting times in our EDs will require more beds in our acute hospitals and in community units and the teams necessary to staff them safely. This plan improves upon already established resources, and provides op- Tony Canavan, CEO of Saolta University Health Care portunities for improvement”. Group

Naughten raises long Covid Independent TD Denis Naughten says 286 Roscommon adults have been left unfit to work due to effects of long Covid and warned that Ireland could be “sleepwalking into a crisis of chronic illness”. Deputy Naughten criticised the HSE for not following through on specialist long Covid clinics and said the Regional Group of TDs would seek a Government commitment to ensure services are rolled out nationwide. “As of yet there are no figures available on the incidence of long Covid in Ireland, but this analysis of the figures from the Department of Social Protection shows that 0.81 per cent of workers are still unable to return to work 12 weeks after their initial infection, which is indicative of a significant challenge that we are facing, particularly within our health service, to manage and treat the impacts associated with this condition,” Deputy Naughten said.

The development of the proposed 50-bed unit at Sacred Heart Hospital, Roscommon is being held up due to a request for an ecological study to be carried out in order to ensure the flight of the local bat population is not disrupted. Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said the HSE has now submitted the information but the planning authority wouldn’t be making a decision for at least another month. “The HSE in fairness are very committed to the project, as are the Department of Health. “The bird is freed” – but verification is not

After a seven-month-long saga of disputes, and recent attempts to back out of the multi-billion dollar deal, Elon Musk has finally gone through with his $44billion acquisition of Twitter, declaring in a tweet on October 28th that “the bird is freed”. Musk’s takeover came right at the last second, the deal closing on the day before Delaware Chancery Court would have gone ahead with Twitter’s lawsuit against the Tesla CEO for failing to honour his commitment to buy the company after his bid was accepted in April. Almost immediately after Musk gained ownership of Twitter, nearly half of the company’s employees were let go, including a handful of top executives. However, in the short time since, Musk has had to backtrack on this abrupt decision, with dozens of employees being asked to come back to the company just days after being fired. Evidentially, in his rashness, Musk failed to realise that some people he was letting go would be required to build the new features he envisages. And the move didn’t sit well with Twitter’s advertisers either; most of those fired worked on policy and content moderation, and the fear is that in their absence, the platform will see a spike in trolling and hate speech, which advertisers don’t want to be associated with. Of course, the fact that a bulk of those fired were working on content moderation/policy comes as little surprise to anyone who knows what the new CEO envisions for the platform. Ever since the acquisition saga began, Musk has been vocal about wanting his version of Twitter to champion ‘free speech’, and move away from moderation. One wonders how Musk intends to reconcile his plans to do away with moderation (as he proposed) while retaining Twitter advertisers. Similarly, one wonders how he plans to make good on his promises to investors to quintuple revenue by 2028 if he doesn’t succeed in retaining advertisers, which at the moment, account for the vast majority of Twitter’s yearly earnings. Presumably, this is where one of Musk’s newer proposals for the platform comes in.

Let’s talk about ... Musk, and Twitter’s new verification fee (A student’s perspective)

Alannah Ita Healy Among the changes Musk has set out for Twitter is the introduction of a monthly $8 verification fee (originally $20, but after a backlash, even Elon had to admit that was too steep). Twitter verification, denoted by a little tick beside a user’s name, up until this point functioned as a marker by which to find the official account for a public figure, and could only be acquired by a well-known person or group. Now anyone can pay for it; per Musk’s vision, all users will now have the option of paying a monthly subscription to Twitter Blue, a pre-existing premium tier to the platform that unlocks additional features, and that will now include verification, fewer ads, and priority in replies, mentions, and search, among other perks. Musk regards this move, and the priority exposure in particular, as “essential to defeat(ing) spam/ scam”. According to him, the aim is to “get as much people payment verified as possible”, the logic being that spam/scam accounts will then be suppressed by the algorithm because they are not part of Twitter Blue. But Musk has made a bold assumption here; hacking/obtaining a hacked verified account previously was much more challenging than bypassing payment authentication for Twitter Blue will be for scammers. Additionally, Musk insists that introducing paid verification will sift the authentic accounts from the inauthentic, saying in an interview that the unverified accounts “will be the bots and trolls and whatnot”; he doesn’t account for those who won’t pay because they can’t afford to/don’t want to – either because of his own blind faith in his vision for

the platform or because, as the richest person in the world, he genuinely can’t imagine how anyone would notice losing $8 a month. Either way, the idea of priority exposure and subsequently that in order for users to not have their account be pushed down and essentially shadowbanned to make room at the top for verified users, they too must cough up the fee each month, is bitterly ironic coming from a man who said his primary aim in overhauling the platform was championing “free speech”. Musk clarified that “you’ll have to scroll really far to see unverified users”, confirming free accounts will be actively suppressed. Apparently to Elon, ‘power to the people’ is just ‘power to the people that pay’ – and lots simply won’t, with users beginning to look to other sites to replace Twitter following Musk’s announcements, such as the German site Mastodon. This entire saga has not just exposed some embarrassing business decisions from Musk, but also just how hollow his previous statements regarding his motivation behind buying and overhauling Twitter were. Musk said he wanted a free speech platform and that he didn’t buy Twitter “to make more money”, but instead “to help humanity”. Yet he hopes to achieve this by charging users money, reducing moderation of potentially harmful content, and actively suppressing the accounts of those who don’t pay. When Twitter accepted Musk’s bid in April, I wrote about Musk being aware of how much owning the platform would benefit him personally – not just financially, but in terms of self-promotion, selfmoderation, and allowing him to easily shut down critics. Musk doesn’t really care about free speech (unless it benefits him of course), nor does he care about “helping humanity”. With his new version of Twitter, he’s looking out for his own self-interest. Whether Musk’s moves will truly see a mass migration of users to alternative sites remains to be seen, but either way, there’s much change ahead for Twitter under its new CEO.

the Iron Curtain and into places where there was civil unrest. ‘How It All Began’ will be officially launched in Hannon’s

Hotel, Roscommon at 7 pm on Thursday, November 17th and the intrepid author is looking forward to welcoming everyone on the night.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Famous birthdays ... this week

Demi Moore (American actress, celebrates 60th birthday on Friday)

Whoopi Goldberg (American comedian and actress, will be 67 on Sunday)

Ryan Gosling (Canadian actor, turns 42 on Saturday)

It’s been a BAD week for… Twitter employees, with about 3,700 staff at the company reportedly laid off by new boss Elon Musk Sinn Féin’s housing spokesperson Eoin Ó Broin (well, a slightly awkward one at least), this after he had to apologise for calling on a top Department of Finance economist to be sacked (the original comments being made by the TD during the Night and Day Festival in Castlerea)

Famous Argentinian football club Boca Juniors, who had seven players sent off in Sunday’s Argentina Champions Trophy final! Opponents Racing Club had a mere three players red-carded, and won the game 2-1 (provocative celebrations over their late winner led to a melee in which five Boca players were red-carded on the spot)

Phil Coulter: A life spent making music! Fresh from receiving the ‘Freedom of Derry’ award, Phil begins a nationwide tour that will include venues in Carrick-on-Shannon, Sligo, Mullingar, Galway and Ballina… < MIRIAM KERINS

He’s not just one of the biggest selling recording artistes of all time, he’s also one of the nicest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to interview! However, perhaps what’s most important to singer-songwriter, ‘The Town I loved so Well’ hit-maker and proud son of Derry Mr Phil Coulter, is that the town he loves so well, has, in his 80th year, presented him with the Freedom of the City of Derry! Conferred on the 7th October, the grandmaster of the music industry and the man who has made several appearances at the White House, can now, as a result of his honour, exercise his right to graze sheep on common ground – if he so chooses. However, in typical good-humoured style, Mr Coulter jokingly told me that, rather than having the right to graze sheep, he’d much prefer it if city councillors “gave me the option of running up a tab in every pub in the city”. We caught up with Phil ahead of his ‘A Lifetime of Songs and Stories, Memories and Melodies’ Irish tour, to ask just how he felt when he heard the news that he was to receive his award. “In my line of business, you get many awards for lots of things, and you’re very grateful for them. They mark a milestone in your career. However, this award was like a milestone in my life as well as my career. To get this award from my own people was absolutely great”. When news of Phil’s accolade got out, hundreds of people turned up in their droves to show their appreciation for one of their own; uniting together in a ‘singalong’ the following day to join the Mass

Choir in an epic rendition of ‘The Town I Loved so Well’. Organised with the City of Derry International Choir Festival, the people of Derry, according to Phil, “turned up on a drizzly afternoon to join in the singalong. I couldn’t believe it. To look down and see little kids in their uniforms singing along with their parents, grannies and granddads, many of whom themselves have lived through the turbulent years of the Troubles, singing all of the words…it really moved me; especially as that song is now 50 years old. I was particularly moved when I noticed that someone who once sat beside me in school was also in the crowd. To get that recognition from my own people was just great”. However, it’s not just his ‘own people’ who love this chart-topping veteran star, with Phil realising just how iconic he is

when, during lockdown, he made the move from live performances to social media. “I live-streamed my Lockdown Lounge from my Facebook page every Saturday and posted new tracks every week, and I couldn’t believe it when I got requests from around the world, even from people in Malaysia!” he recalls. Becoming a worldwide phenomenon is nothing new to Phil. He cemented his place in the hall of fame, achieving iconic status when The King himself, Elvis Presley recorded the single ‘My Boy’; a beautiful ballad which became a top 20 hit in the US and around the world. He also penned our rugby anthem ‘Ireland’s Call’, and the 1967 Eurovision winner ‘Puppet on a String’, with his hit ‘Congratulations’ – sung by Cliff Richard – finishing in second place the following year, beaten by Spain by just a single point. For all of his successes, achievements and accolades, the moments which stand out most for Mr Coulter are that October weekend in Derry and “the satisfaction I get when I stand in Lansdowne Road (now the Aviva) listening to them singing ‘Ireland’s Call’. I often think, when I’ve fallen off my perch, my boys will be going to rugby matches listening to my song”. You can see Phil perform at the following venues: 18th November, The Landmark Hotel, Carrick-on-Shannon, County Leitrim; 29th November, Hawk’s Well Theatre, County Sligo; 4th December, The Mullingar Park Hotel, County Westmeath; 6th December, The Town Hall Theatre, County Galway; 15th December, The Great National Hotel, Ballina, County Mayo. ‘Dust’ – Arts Centre’s latest exhibition The upcoming exhibition ‘Dust’ by Ann Henderson has been commissioned by Roscommon Arts Centre as an exploration into twenty years of ongoing studio process. It opens at 6 pm on November 11th (both in-person and virtually) and will continue until January 14th. Ann Henderson’s practice focuses upon the evidence of the passage of time and as such the processes of growth and decay are central. Appropriating Merlin Sheldrake’s description of mycelium, the practice “is better thought of not as a thing, but as a process an exploratory, irregular tendency”. Within this, Ann makes no deliberate differentiation between the artist’s manifest response and the artefacts of these natural processes. Material and artist are equally active, equally bound by impermanence. All of this escapes the studio, seeps into the domestic and returns metamorphosed, time and time again. For the duration of the

exhibition and beyond the ongoing will be ongoing. These ‘ongoings’ will involve a series of virtual studio visits from Rathlin Island and a short residency onsite at Roscommon Arts Centre. Ann has been practising as an artist for over thirty years. She places importance in investing locally, as well as further afield, and has been living and basing her practice on Rathlin Island, off the north coast of Ireland, since 1998. Ann is committed to ongoing investigation into our relationship with nature and is convinced that this most fundamental of interconnects is inseparable from the human spiritual component. She believes there is essential value, not only in solitary endeavour as an artist, but also in working and collaborating with others. For more information on the upcoming exhibit and other events being organised by Roscommon Arts Centre, contact 09066 25824 or visit roscommonartscentre.ie.

€30m Fodder Scheme ignores difficulties of sheep farmers in inputs crisis - IFA IFA National Sheep Chairman, Kevin Comiskey, has said the terms and conditions issued by the Department of Agriculture for the advance payment of the Fodder Support Scheme is another example of sheep farmers being left behind by the Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue. Kevin Comiskey said the scheme is only available to farmers who qualified for payments in 2022 and is based on saving hay and silage. The IFA National Sheep Chairman said a large cohort of sheep farmers operating in hill areas were unable to claim the scheme this year and have now also being ruled out of the €30 million scheme. “IFA highlighted concerns for the store lamb trade to the Minister and his officials earlier this year and this has now come to pass with a very difficult store trade for lighter hill lambs in particular, which are the same cohort of farmers ruled out of this scheme,” Mr. Comiskey said.

“The lack of support for sheep farmers from the Minister has reached a critical stage and the failure of the Minister and his officials to address the shortcomings in the original Fodder Support Scheme has angered sheep farmers”. The IFA National Sheep

Chair said the Minister must come forward with meaningful targeted supports for sheep farmers in recognition of the current difficulties on farms and the market failure to return production cost increases. “Factory prices are now up to €12/lamb behind last year despite the increased

IFA seek meeting with Minister on ACRES funding and deadline extension

IFA National Rural Development Chairperson, Michael Biggins, is seeking a meeting with Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue to address outstanding issues regarding the Agri-Climate Rural Environment Scheme (ACRES). Mr. Biggins said that all farmers who wish to participate must be accepted into the scheme and those applying in 2023 must receive a payment in the same year. “There is a real concern about farmer’s income if there is a lag between GLAS/REAP and ACRES, which will be caused by the tranche approach,” he said. “Not accepting all who wish to participate into the scheme in 2023 is totally unacceptable. GLAS/ ACRES payments are a critical component of farmers’ incomes. It is essential that all applicants under all tranches receive a portion of their pay-

ment, equivalent to an 85 per cent advance payment, as is currently the case in GLAS, in 2023. “In Budget 2023, the Minister for Agriculture allocated funding for only 30,000 places under Tranche 1 of ACRES, with Tranche 2 not expected to open until Q4 2023. Based on participation levels in GLAS and REAP scheme, combined with expressions of interest for ACRES, it is expected that approximately 60,000 farmers may wish to participate in the agrienvironment scheme”. The IFA National Rural Development Chairperson called on the Minister to ensure all valid scheme applications are accepted while also ensuring that no farmer is left without an environment scheme payment for 2023. “This can be done by either offering a bridging payment to farmers who are not successful in tranche 1 of ACRES

or by paying an upfront ACRES payment in 2023 for Tranche 2 participants, similar to the way REPS payments were in the past,” he said. The IFA National Rural Development Chair has urged the Minister to extend the deadline for Tranche 1 to ensure all farmers interested in joining are given the opportunity to apply. “With the deadline for ACRES of Monday, November 21st fast approaching, planners/consultants and farmers are under increasing pressure to complete and submit applications. This tight six-week deadline may drastically reduce the number of applications received. The closing date for the scheme must be extended to mid-December to ensure sufficient time is given to drawing up plans, to maximize farmer participation and their payment in the scheme,” he concluded.

production costs on farms. This is not sustainable in a low-income vulnerable sector and must be offset by direct supports,” he added. “The Minister must as a matter of urgency commit funding to a targeted scheme for sheep farmers that will bring direct sup-

ports for the sector up to €30/ewe. “It is ironic sheep farming is one of the most environmentally sustainable farming systems in the country yet it is the one government have failed to support throughout this crisis and in the new CAP for next year”.

IFA welcome forestry increase but say legacy issues must still be addressed

IFA National Farm Forestry Chairperson, Jason Fleming, has said that the announcement of an increase in premium rates of between 46 per to 66 per under the new forestry programme is a positive development but legacy issues still need to be addressed if planting targets are to be met. “I would like to acknowledge the work of Minister Pippa Hackett in securing a forestry package of in excess €1.3 billion for the new the forestry programme, that see forest premium payments increase by between 46 per cent to 66 per cent, while the duration of premium payments will increase to 20 years for farmers,” he said. Under the new forestry programme, forest premium payment rates and duration have increased offer-

Senator Eugene Murphy

ing farmers the potential of earn a premium payment of up to €1,142 per hectare payments for 20 years depending on the forest type planted. Farmers that plant a mixed conifer forest will be paid €746 per hectare (an increase from €510) for 20 years, which is the equivalent of a payment of just under €15,000 per hectare. Farmers that plant an agro-forestry type forest will earn €975 per hectares (an increase from €645) for 10 years. The programme also offers farmers greater diversity with several new forest type categories added including Forests for Water, Emergent Forests, Seed Orchards and Continuous Cover Forestry. “The increases in the forest premium payments as well as the extension of

Special Sale of Heifers Also Dry Cows and Bullocks the premium payment to 20 years will certainly encourage more farmers to look at forestry as an option on their farm,” Jason

Fleming added. But he stressed that increased premiums alone would not be enough and that the Minister needed

to continue to work with farmers to restore confidence particularly around the ash dieback and the licencing system.

Murphy welcomes €1.3bn for new Forestry Supports Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy has welcomed the announcement of a proposed investment by the Government of €1.3 billion in Irish forestry. The funding will be for the next national Forestry Programme and represents the largest ever investment by an Irish Government in tree-planting. The programme will now be the subject of state-aid approval by the European Commission. “This represents a substantial commitment by the Government to

the forestry sector and reflects the seriousness with which we view the climate change and biodiversity challenges which are affecting us all,” he said. “Forestry is at the heart of delivering on our sustainability goals and this will support the biggest and best-funded Forestry Programme ever in Ireland. Planting trees is one of the most effective methods of tackling climate change as well as contributing to improved biodiversity and water quality”.

The proposed new Forestry Programme is currently out to public consultation as part of the Strategic Environmental Assessment and Appropriate Assessment process. The Programme is the main implementation mechanism for the new Forest Strategy (2023 -2030). The public consultation closes on November 29th and any changes which result from this process will be incorporated into the Programme and the Forest Strategy.

Celebration on the double for Byrne Carolan Cunningham!

Byrne Carolan Cunningham Solicitors are enjoying a double celebration having scooped the Award for Property Law Firm/ Team/Lawyer of the Year (Leinster) at the Dye & Durham, Irish Law Awards 2022 on October 28th in the Aviva Stadium, Dublin as well as marking 30 years in business. The firm said it was thrilled to have taken one award with them back to the midlands and to have been finalists in three categories including Law Firm of the Year (Leinster); Property Law Firm/Team/ Lawyer of the Year (Leinster); and Personal Injury/ Medical Negligence Law Firm/Team/Lawyer of the Year. Byrne Carolan Cunningham opened its doors on October 5th 1992 with modest offices at 39 Mardyke Street, the founding solicitors were Daragh Byrne and Brian Carolan and they had one secretary.

Brian O’Brien, Aisling Conroy, Sinead Costello, Anne Marie Lynam, Karen Rosney, Gosia Michalska, Marie Dunning

In the 30 years since, they have expanded those offices at Mardyke Street greatly. The Partnership now includes Niall Cunningham, a native of Moate, Brian O’Brien who comes from Lanesboro and Michael Leonard who hails from Galway. In addition, the firm has 22 staff across their offices in Athlone, Moate, Lanesboro and Galway. They also offer

their services nationwide by appointment. With nine highly experienced solicitors and 18 support staff they specialise in all types of Personal Injury matters, Medical Negligence Law, Property Law and Wills & Inheritance Law. A spokeperson for the firm when asked about their nominations in the Law Awards, said they were delighted to have

been nominated as finalists in three categories and it was a huge honour and recognition of the work of their highly dedicated team of solicitors and support staff to have picked up the award for Property Law Firm/Team/Lawyer of the Year (Leinster). Like many businesses they are grateful to have survived through a recession and also the challenges that Covid-19 brought

but they managed to adapt and grow while still continuing to provide their clients with the high standard of service that they pride themselves on. *To learn more about Byrne Carolan Cunningham, contact 090-6478433, 090-6482090 and 091511421 or by email info@ bccsolicitors.ie. Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson was gracious in defeat recently when he congratulated Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin on pipping his Tequila brand to a major global drinks award. The Hollywood star took to Twitter to congratulate the Leitrim gin bran and promised to raise a glass of Gunpowder gin to honour their win. The Rock’s Teremana Tequila was one of five brands up for the 2022 Wine Enthusiast Star Award for International Spirit Brand of the Year and Gunpowder Irish Gin was announced as the winner via live link from Florida. The team in Drumshanbo were delighted with their win and said: “We are huge fans of The Rock and we immediately followed him back! Teremana is an incredible brand. We were humbled to be shortlisted alongside Teremana and other globally-renowned spirits brand. We would like to congratulate all the amazing finalists – we are still on a high since the announcement yesterday! “Cheers to you Dwayne - it was definitely worth a shot!”

Local brewery to feature on craft beer podcast Ballinlough brewery, Black Donkey, will feature on a new limited edition podcast series known as ‘Craft Community, the local Irish beer podcast’. The series, which is supported by Bord Bia and presented by beer sommelier and award-winning drinks writer, Susan Boyle, will feature six episodes with ‘pint-sized chats’ with local brewers from across Ireland. Black Donkey Brewing will feature on episode four ‘The art of craft beer’, alongside Bridewell Bakery and Canvas Brewing. The series launched on Wednesday last and will feature new episodes weekly. The podcast series follows on from the successful ‘Irish Beer Map’ campaign in which the ICBI and Bord Bia developed a new database to map craft breweries in Ireland. Speaking about the podcast, host Susan Boyle said: “There is so much more to craft beer than hops, yeast, malts and water! It’s a dazzling combination of place and time, the ingredients used, how they’ve been layered, and the story of those who have brewed it. We hope that this podcast lifts the lid on this thriving industry and gets people thinking differently about our vibrant craft community”.

In loving memory of John, who passed away on 13th November 2018 R.I.P.

Missed each day and remembered by her family. Anniversary Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Kilbegnet on Sunday, 20th November 2022 at 11.30am.

In God’s care you rest alone, in our hearts you rest with love. Never more than a thought away.

MULLIGAN Tommy Curraghreevagh, Creggs. Who passed away on the 12th November 2017. (5th Anniversary)

Loved and remembered everyday by Margaret and family. Anniversary Mass in St. Patrick’s Church, Athleague on Sunday, 13th November at 10am.

SCANLON (nee Owens) Sharon Limerick & formerly Lisnamult Roscommon (4th Anniversary)

No farewell words were ever spoken no time to say goodbye. You were gone before we knew it and only God can tell us why. It broke our hearts to lose you but you did not go alone for part of us went with you the day God called you Home.

Lovingly remembered by his parents, Tommy Joe and Mary, sisters Elizabeth and Maria, brother-in-law Joe, niece Dayna, nephews Dylan and Patrick. Anniversary Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Kilbegnet on Sunday, 13th November at 11.30am.

THANKSGIVINGS THE MIRACULOUS PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked you for many favours. This time I ask this special one. (mention it). Take it Dear Heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour, not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times, for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. C.J.V.S.

In loving memory of Mary, who died on 12th November 2020 R. I. P. A special day, another year a loving thought, a silent tear, a little prayer to keep in touch with someone loved and missed so much.

Loved forever and sadly missed by Marie, Shay, Sean, Noel and families. Anniversary Mass in The Church of the Good Sheperd, Tisrara on Sunday, 13th November 2022 at 11am.

CASEY Bernadine Grange, Four Mile House, Roscommon. Treasured memories of a dear wife, mother and grandmother who passed away 6th October 2011 (11th Anniversary)

In loving memory of Sharon who passed away on the 15th November 2018.

A light from our lives has gone, a voice we loved is still. A place is vacant within our hearts, which never can be filled. A bouquet of beautiful memories, sprayed with a million tears. We wish that God could have spared you, if just for a few more years. Rest In Peace dear Sharon and thanks for all you’ve done I pray that God has given you the crown you have truly won.

Missed, loved and remembered every day by all her family. xxxxx A Mass will be offered in the Sacred Heart Church, Roscommon on Tuesday, 15th of November at 11am.

We will never find another to take the place of you. No one will ever touch our lives exactly like you do. No one, who’s quite so thoughtful, no one we cherish so. No one will mean so much to us, we just wanted you to know.

Dearly missed by your husband Joe, sons Damien and Declan, daughter-inlaw Helen, your precious grandson Senan Bernard and your extended family Anniversary Mass in St. Brigid’s Church, Four Mile House on Sunday, 13th November at 11am.

The family of the late Bridget Kelly (née Reddington) of Curraghaleen, Bealnamulla, Athlone, Co. Roscommon and formally of Castlecoote, Co. Roscommon, wish to acknowledge the many expressions of sympathy and gestures of kindness shown to us following our sad loss. We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to all who telephoned, sent floral tributes, cards, messages of condolences and offered emotional and practical support to us during this difficult time, we offer our sincere gratitude to the many friends, neighbours and well-wishers who lined the roadside from her residence in Curraghaleen to St. Peter’s & Paul’s Church, Athlone, and onward to her final resting place in Drum Cemetery. A special word of thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Portiuncula University Hospital, Ballinasloe for their kindness and respect shown at all times, to all those who participated at her Funeral Mass and Burial, especially Fr. Michael Hickey PP, the church musician, the grave diggers and finally Hamrock’s Funeral Directors for their sensitive and professional handling of the funeral arrangements. We are grateful to those who arranged the live streaming of the Funeral Mass for the family and friends who could not join us in person To those who helped in any way, your contribution made our loss more bearable. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude. The Holy Sacrament of the Mass will be offered for your intensions.

Will those who think of them today, a prayer to Our Lady of Knock, please say.

Always remembered with love by Shirley and family. Mass has been offered.

MULRENNAN John Joe and Anna Cloonakilla, Strokestown.

(3rd Anniversaries) Who died on November 5th and November 19th, 2019. R.I.P.

THANKSGIVINGS UNFAILING NOVENA PRAYER TO ST. ANTHONY Oh Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of saints, your love for God and charity for His creatures made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore of you to obtain for me (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the ‘Saint of Miracles’. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms, and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Publication promised for a great favour received. M.F.

MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS In this month of November, we remember with gratitude and sadness all those who have gone before us. For those who have not yet reached their Heavenly destination and are being detained in Purgatory, the following prayer was given to St Gertrude; ‘Eternal Father, I offer Thee the most precious blood of Thy Divine Son Jesus, in union with the Holy Masses said throughout the world today for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, those in my own home and within my family Amen’. Jesus revealed to St. Gertrude that each time this prayer is recited, many souls are released from Purgatory. It would therefore be good practice to recite it many times each day even by using the Rosary Beads, in order to bring much needed relief to these poor souls.

Though your smiles are gone forever, and your hands we cannot touch, still, we have so many memories, of the ones we loved so much. Your memories are our precious keepsake, with which we will never part God has you both in his keeping, we have you in our hearts.

Forever remembered by your loving family. Anniversary Mass will be celebrated in memory of Anna and John Joe on Sunday, November 13th in Sts. Eithne & Fidelma Church, Tulsk at 11.30am.

THANKSGIVINGS 3 DAY NOVENA TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN O, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, Fruitful Vine, Splendour of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the Son of God, Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. O, Star of the Sea, help me and show me herein you are my Mother. O, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart, to succour me in my necessity (your request). There are none that can withstand your power. O, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. Holy Mary, I place this cause in your hands, after each prayer, say 9 Hail Marys. You must publish and it will be granted to you. CMVC

Ronan’s set for Owenmore test < SEAMUS DUKE

St. Ronan’s will not have long to lick their wounds after last Sunday’s Roscommon Junior A Football Championship Final replay defeat to Pádraig Pearses as they face Sligo side Owenmore Gaels in the Connacht Club Junior Championship this Saturday at Dr. Hyde Park at 1 pm. The Sligo side have not played any competitive football in a couple of months. In contrast, St. Ronan’s will be battlehardened and as a result they should be good enough to advance. Elsewhere, Strokestown will be keeping a keen eye on the Connacht Senior Championship quarter-final meeting between Galway champions Moycullen and Mayo champions Westport on Sunday as they will face the winners in the Connacht semi-final on Sunday week.

Gaels’ girls make history! Roscommon Gaels made history on Saturday last at Dr. Hyde Park as their U-16 Ladies team captured the 2022 league and championship titles following a nailbiting one-point win (2-7 to 0-12) against a gallant St. Barry’s side. The Gaels led 2-4 to 0-6 at the end of a first half which featured two fine team goals from Molly Rose Finneran and Grace Geraghty.

Both teams played impressive football in the second period and exchanged scores early on with Cara Cox on target for Barry’s and Shauna Walsh responding with a point from distance for the Gaels. Barry’s gained a foothold as the half wore on and three points in succession reduced the arrears to just one point. Gaels’ goalkeeper Jane King was then called into action after Barry’s were awarded a

Harney opts out for 2023 New Roscommon senior football manager, Davy Burke, has been dealt a huge blow ahead of preparations for 2023 following confirmation that Clann na nGael clubman Ultan Harney has opted out of next year’s campaign. The midfielder, who was one of Roscommon’s star performers last season, has decided to travel abroad in 2023 and won’t be in a position to commit to the Rossies’ National Football League Division One and Connacht Championship fixtures.

Burke adds McGowan to backroom team Roscommon manager Davy Burke has confirmed that former Sligo footballer Gerry McGowan, who has been coaching in Clare under Colm Collins for the past two years, will be part of his backroom team for 2023. McGowan will join selector Eddie Lohan and coach Mark McHugh in the new manager’s backroom team.

penalty and an opportunity to take the lead. King pulled off a superb save to keep her side’s lead intact. Barry’s did level matters in the last five minutes but Alannah Sutton stormed forward to put the Town side back in front with a smart point before Siofra Hession extended the Gaels’ lead on the stroke of full-time. There was still time for Barry’s to reduce the deficit to the bare minimum late on,

but the Gaels hung on to emerge victorious. There were emotional scenes at the final whistle as the Roscommon town side clinched their first ever U-16 Division One title. The team was captained by Emma O’Farrell under the management team of Decie Walsh (manager), and selectors Andy Hession, Teresa Hession, Ray McSharry and Elizabeth Sweeney-McSharry.

THE GAIN LINE

Creggs Seconds win at Claremorris Creggs RFC Seconds recorded an impressive 2312 win away to Claremorris in the Connacht J1C League last Sunday. An early Mark Brandon penalty put Creggs ahead before Mark Kilcommons rounded off a superb backline move with a try in the 18th minute of this closely contested game. Claremorris replied with a well taken try to leave Creggs narrowly ahead 8-5 at half-time. Creggs dominated the third quarter and it was fitting that Bradley Heunes powered over for a try as he had caused the Claremorris defence plenty of trouble all afternoon with his strong direct running style. A third try by captain Brian Coady was converted by Mark Brandon

and that should have put Creggs firmly in control, but a lapse in concentration on the restart allowed the home side to break up field for a converted try under the posts to reduce the deficit to 20-12. Soon after, a Mark Brandon penalty rounded off the scoring. This was important win on the road for Creggs with the forwards laying the platform for victory with a strong, disciplined display against a formidable home pack. The halfback combination of Mark Brandon and Ronan Dowd worked well while Mark Kilcommons and the irrepressible Heunes were outstanding in a well-balanced Creggs’ backline. A big welcome back also to Ger Comer. Next weekend’s J1C league game is at home to

to the girls, coaches, and parents who travelled and special thanks to Mullingar RFC for their excellent organisation and hospitality.

THE SPORTS STUDIO Occasional sporting musings with Paul Healy

Recalling the scourge of football hooliganism < PAUL HEALY

It was Monday night football with a difference… There I was, channel-hopping, unimpressed that Sky Sports had no actual live Monday night football, and then I came upon a documentary on Channel 4. It was part two of a three-part series entitled ‘Italia 90: When Football Changed Forever’. The series is described as ‘The story of the World Cup that determined the future of English football – a watershed tournament for the team, fans, and the nation back home’. Last Monday night’s episode was almost totally focussed on the scourge of hooliganism, which led to English clubs being banned from European football for a period in the 1980s (after the Heysel Stadium disaster in 1985). The ongoing violence by English fans was a huge reputational embarrassment for England, and a massive headache for then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. This documentary features interviews with some of the brutal leaders of ‘football firms’ i.e. the hooligan gangs associated with various English clubs. In the 1980s, major riots in the stands and outside grounds’ were common. The programme also features recollections from members of the England team that went to Italia 90 under the cloud of the hooligan threat. Those contributing included Peter Shilton, Stuart Pearce, Paul Parker, John Barnes and Paul Gascoigne. Meanwhile, the recollections of police ‘hard men’ who arguably risked their lives by posing as undercover cops in an attempt to identify gang leaders, were fascinating. I remember that time of shocking, orchestrated fans’ violence; this programme depicts the darkness of that era very well. Part 3 airs at 9 pm on Channel 4 this Monday night, November 14th (presumably the entire series is available online).

< PAUL HEALY

I wrote elsewhere in this column of my disappointment at there being no live Premier League game on Sky Sports on Monday night – Monday night football can be a real treat – but I must subject myself to a kind of VAR… That’s because I did watch some football on Sky on Monday evening; it was highlights of Chelsea’s 3-1 win over Manchester United in the FA Women’s Super League. It was a high-quality performance from Chelsea, who are joint top of the table with London rivals Arse-

nal (Manchester United in third). The ongoing development of women’s sport in Ireland, and in the UK, is so exciting, welcome and overdue. England winning the UEFA Women’s Championship during the summer was a defining milestone across the water. Then last month, the Republic of Ireland made history by qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the first time ever. Statistics suggest that while female participation in sport in Ireland is growing, it is a gradual increase (40.8% of Irish females regularly taking part in sport now, compared

to 39.3% in 2015). I’d expect those participation levels to grow significantly in the next couple of years. The existence of so many fantastic female role models in Irish sport will of course help to drive the increased participation levels. Here in County Roscommon, we have seen at first-hand how talent, dedication and commitment can achieve so much. Olivia Costello continues to make great strides in golf; the phenomenal exploits of boxing sisters Aoife and Lisa O’Rourke have been well documented. Richael Timothy is an accomplished Paralympian (and all-round sportsperson). All

over County Roscommon, females are excelling in countless sports. Most importantly of all, they are participating. Nationally, with the success of Leona Maguire (golf), the Irish soccer team, superstar jockey Rachael Blackmore, our numerous female boxing stars – and many other inspirational performers in various sports – women’s sport is in a historically strong place. What is critical now is that the current Government/Sport Ireland and future governments continue to increase funding for women’s/ girls’ sport.

Whirlwind still blowing up a storm! < PAUL HEALY

Snooker legend Jimmy White’s lonely insistence on continuing to play the circuit at 60 years of age has led to lots of raised eyebrows – and maybe even some misguided pity – over the years. Personally, like millions of fans who fondly remember his peak years (the 1980s and early ‘90s), I’ve relished the fact that White is still plying his trade, albeit with no realistic chance of claiming silverware again (except on the seniors’ circuit). He won’t win silverware this week either, but something special has been happening. And it leaves me in awe of the man’s self-belief and resilience, not to mention the talent that made him one of the greatest players of all time. White has been taking part in the qualifying stages ahead for the UK Championship. For veterans like White, this pretty much always ends in an early exit to a relative unknown, or maybe to a fellow former champion who’s in decline. But White’s not adhering to that familiar script just now. The fact that he came through the first two qualifying rounds – courtesy of two 6-0 wins(!) – was itself highly impressive. When he then drew Stephen Maguire, current world number 25 and UK Championship finalist in 2019, it seemed very ominous. White, now ranked world number 89, went 3-1 behind. The fairytale would surely abruptly end now. But it didn’t; sensationally, White went on to defeat Maguire 6-4. As we go to press on Wednesday evening, news just in that White has beaten Dominic Dale 6-1 to qualify for the televised stage of the tournament! Jimmy White won the UK Championship in 1992. He won’t win the 2022 version, but his current run of form, at 60 years of age, is remarkable. Absolute legend.

Pearses prevail over St Ronan’s to take junior crown Padraig Pearses team and management who won King & Moffatt Junior Final replay last weekend. Pic: Mick McCormack

King and Moffatt Roscommon JFC A Final Padraig Pearses 0-11 St Ronan’s 1-6 < SEAMUS DUKE

As this junior final replay in Strokestown headed into injury-time last Sunday, there was an air of familiarity about it all. Padraig Pearses were hanging on to a one-point lead, with St Ronan’s trying desperately to work an equaliser, or indeed the goal that would clinch the title for them. Their massive support roared them on, but there was to be no fairytale finish this time around. Pearses maintained their composure, and fullforward Daniel Glynn pointed a free to

put them two up. The cup was heading south for the winter. It was a very sweet win for Pearses, who were defeated in last year’s final. It’s often said that replays seldom live up to the drawn game, and this was certainly the case on Sunday. Mind you, it would have been hard to repeat the thrills and spills of the previous week. The presence of a strong wind (and showers of rain in the second half) also impacted on the flow of the game. Pearses were the deserved winners as they had far more of the ball throughout, but full credit to St Ronan’s who battled all the way to the finish. The opening quarter was tentative and evenly contested. The sides shared four points, with Pearses scoring through

Adam McGreal (a mark) and the excellent Conor Ryan (a free), Ronan’s replying with points from Mark Healy and Ronan Kelly. With Ryan and Shane Downey getting on top at midfield, Pearses went on to play their best football of the game in the second quarter. Five points without reply from Seanie Fahy (two frees), Sean Canning, Daniel Glynn (a free) and Adam McGreal (another mark) saw them 0-7 to 0-2 ahead by the 23rd minute. Ronan’s suddenly sprang to life, and in the 26th minute a sweeping team move was expertly finished by Ronan Kelly for a super goal. A Gary O’Daly point two minutes later reduced the margin to one. The game was back in the melting pot. Points from Shane Mulvey for Pearses and a fisted ef-

fort from Thomas McManus for Ronan’s meant that the sides went in at the break with the South Roscommon club a point ahead, 0-8 to 1-4. John Keavney levelled the scores with an early second-half point, but impressive Pearses’ captain James Kelly replied. When Keavney then levelled the scores in the 37th minute, we settled in for another dramatic finale. Glynn pointed a free from closerange in the 44th minute, but despite playing the better football, Pearses were unable to develop a substantial lead. In fact, with defences on top, it was 18 minutes before the next score. Ronan’s concentrated on sending in long balls, but the Pearses’ defence stood strong, with Brendan Connor, James Kelly and Shane Mulvey outstanding. In the second minute of injury-time another free from Glynn put Pearses two in front. Although Ronan’s did have a couple of late half-chances, the dream was over for the men from Ballyfarnon, Arigna and Keadue. For Pearses, midfielder Conor Ryan was tremendous all through, while Brendan Connor, James Kelly, Shane Mulvey, Daniel Glynn and Adam McGreal were also very prominent. For a gallant St Ronan’s, Enda Flynn, Eddie Noone, Thomas McManus, Ronan Kelly and Mark Healy were excellent. They will be disappointed this week, but they have had a wonderful year to look back on.
