I live in the countryside and I do my best to keep my property clean and tidy. I am fed up however of other road users destroying the public road with clay, muck etc. Surely there is a law prohibiting this practice? Please advise me.

Provisions within the Roads Act 1993 address the prevention of damage to public roads and the protection of people who use them. While most landowners are careful when using public roads for agricultural activities, there may also be instances where roads are damaged through careless and unlawful activities.

It is an offence to allow any material, such as clay, slurry or fodder, onto a public road, where such material is, or could be a hazard to road users or interferes with the safe use or maintenance of the road.

Landowners are obliged to ensure that:a. The transport of winter fodder over public roads is on the basis that there is no alternative off-road means of access. b. Adequate measures are in place between gateways and storage locations to minimise the amount of clay that is carried onto the public road. c. Tyres of tractors, etc. are regularly washed down to ensure that soil is not carried onto the public road. d. Fodder, plastic or twines are not left on grass margins. e. Livestock are kept and fed an adequate distance from the road so that road drainage is not interfered with and slurry is prevented from flowing onto the public road. f. Any soil, fodder etc., which is deposited on the road is removed immediately. g. Vehicles are not parked for long periods on the hard shoulder / grass margins of the public road.

Parking in this manner may cause damage to the public road and may also limit sight lines for roads users.

It is also an offence to deface, damage or dig up a public road without applying for, and receiving, prior permission of the County Council in the form of a Road Opening Licence. It should be noted that the public road extends from fence to fence and includes footpaths / grass verges and roadside drains.

Syndicate calls… to claim €500k win!

A syndicate has come forward to claim a Euromillions prize of €500,000 from a ticket that was sold in Ballyfarnon last month.

The ticket was bought at Healy’s Xpress on October 7th but the winners didn’t verify their ticket with Lottery headquarters until this week.

Speaking to local media earlier this week, shop

owner, Mark Healy, said Lotto headquarters had contacted him on Tuesday to inform him.

“We were starting to worry and thought that maybe somebody had lost the ticket. We’re not sure but that would suggest it is a local winner.

Whoever it is, we hope it changes their lives for the better,” he said.

Over 40 Covid cases in County Roscommon in recent days < DAN DOONER

There were twelve new cases of Covid-19 in County Roscommon as of midnight on Tuesday, bringing the 14-day incidence rate of the virus to 223.1, which is the tenth highest in the country.

Nationally, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre was informed of 444 new cases and eight further deaths from Covid-19.

The county’s case numbers remained unstable this week with 24 recorded on Monday, compared with just five on Tuesday.

In the fourteen days leading up to Wednesday, Roscommon had recorded 144 cases of Covid-19 and 795 in total since the start of the pandemic.

As of 2 pm yesterday (Wednesday), there were 310 Covid-19 patients hospitalised, of which 41 are in intensive care. There had been 25 additional hospitalisations in the 24 hours previous.

Hospice invites people to #ShineALightforHospice

Mayo/Roscommon Hospice Foundation is asking people to #ShineALightforHospice this November to help raise funds for vital palliative care services.

Due to the fact that the Foundation can’t hold its usual gathering for its tree-lighting ceremony, this year people are being asked to light a candle in their own home on Sunday, November 29th, at 6.30 pm to remember a loved one – living or deceased – and share in the Shine A Light ceremony from afar.

During the virtual ceremony, loved

ones who have passed away, or indeed those who have been going through a tough time, will be remembered. You can light your own candle or purchase a special Mayo/Roscommon Hospice Foundation candle for the evening.

The ceremony will be livestreamed on Sunday, November 29th, at 6.30 pm on the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice Facebook page, so people can join in from the safety of their own homes.

Fundraising for the new Roscommon Hospice will continue in Knockcroghery this year with the turning on of the ‘Shine A Light Tree’ on Sunday, November 29th.

The tree-lighting ceremony, which usually attracts crowds of well wishers, will be a private affair this year due to Covid-19 restrictions, but will be streamed live on the Knockcroghery Hospice Support Group Facebook page.

The event is part of the ‘Let Love Shine a Light’ campaign, which has become an annual event in Knockcroghery over the past number of years.

Local organiser, Jackie Doyle, is hoping the event is once again a fundraising success. “This year the event will be held in private due to Covid-19 restrictions but will be streamed live on our Facebook page so we hope people join us from 6 pm on Sunday, November 29th.

“Last year, between the Shine A Light Tree, a bag pack in a local supermarket and our raffle, we managed to raise a total of €4,380.48.

This year, Mayo/Roscommon Hospice needs your support more than ever as the foundation works to complete the Roscommon Hospice Unit in Roscommon town,” she said.

This is an important time for Palliative Care services in the county as

work continues on an 8-bed Hospice building. The building is expected to be completed next year.

Fundraisers are calling on members of the public to give the gift of love this Christmas while supporting the Mayo/Roscommon Hospice. You can this by sponsoring a light on the Tree of Light in Knockcroghery for a friend, family member, someone you know or in memory of a loved one.

The special light can be sponsored for the living or the deceased and will shine on the tree at Knockcroghery throughout the Christmas period.

Claire’s common sense call on ‘essential clothing’ Sinn Féin TD Claire Kerrane has called on the Government to reverse the “nonsensical” ban on the sale of essential clothing for children.

Speaking yesterday (Wednesday), Deputy Kerrane said: “While some can buy essential clothing online, the reality is that this is beyond the reach of many low income families.

“The Government cannot just ignore the needs of these families – doing so risks undermining public support for necessary restrictions.

“I will be writing to NPHET asking them to explain the rationale behind the current approach”.

Deputy Kerrane said parents would need access to clothes shops with colder weather arriving.

“We are heading into a cold and trying winter, and parents need to be able to buy clothes for their children appropriately.

“Instead, the public were once again left scratching their heads at nonsensical messaging from Government with claims from Minister Damien English that ‘clothes are not essential’.

“Such a statement invites ridicule, but the most important thing now is that the Government realise their mistake and address the frustrations of parents,” she said.

New monitoring system is a smart move!

Oil are reaching out in many ways (see digital initiative alongside) during the current Covid-19 lockdown.

Jason McEvoy explains: “This current situation has made customers cost-conscious and so in an effort to give as much value as we can, we offer a pay-as-you-go delivery system.

“We’ve also reduced the minimum call-out order from €150 to €100. We are also aware that customers may be forced to stay at home or may not be able to reach depots during lockdown so we will deliver drums of kerosene for €22,” he said.

In a further service to the public, Jason says drivers are on hand to

provide support for the community this winter.

“We’re an essential service and we have drivers on the roads covering an 80km radius every day so we are telling our customers that if they need any messages dropped in or if they have neighbours who need assistance, to let us know,” he added.

Jason McEvoy says the company prides itself on value and customer service, and has moved into the digital sphere in recent times with further innovations to come.

“We launched a smart monitoring system for home heating oil tanks called the Magnus monitor. We fit this monitor on the customer’s tank free of charge and for a €3 monthly fee, oil levels can then be monitored through an app on your smartphone. This results in a more efficient heating system and peace of mind for the customer, who won’t run out of oil with this app giving them live information. This monitor also alleviates air-locking and provides a safeguard against theft and leakages too. There are no hidden costs and we provide the equipment and fitting free of charge,” he added.

Saturday I was so underwhelmed by Ireland’s second-half performance in Paris, I switched channels with five minutes to go – and didn’t realise until Sunday that we scored a late try, achieving some scoreboard respectability (a 35-27 defeat).

Safe to say I wasn’t as frustrated as Ireland captain Johnny Sexton, who trooped off the field petulantly shaking his head when substituted late on. I hope nobody is suggesting this was admirable evidence of a perfectionist who cares so much that he couldn’t hide his feelings. It wasn’t; it was petulant, attention-seeking behaviour.

Johnny Sexton is captain of the Irish rugby team. This is not how a captain should behave. If he’s angry with being subbed, he presumably has ever opportunity to raise the issue with management, either in the dressing room or on the training pitch.

Of course there would be no TV cameras at those locations!

Saturday/Sunday On The Sunday Game, Des Cahill assured studio analysts Pat Spillane and Seán Cavanagh that the weather in Clones (for Monaghan v Cavan) had been “Caribbeanlike”.

Very naughty of Des to tease us with a mention of the Caribbean (or any holiday hotspot), but we’ll let him off with it – it was great to have The Sunday Game back.

Des was of course exaggerating – Clones is not the Caribbean – but he probably felt like cheering up viewers who had just been watching highlights of Donegal v Tyrone from an extremely wet Ballybofey. If Clones was trying to be the Caribbean, Ballybofey was…well, to be fair, much like Ballybofey can be in early November.

Still, Donegal and Tyrone served up a very good match (shown live earlier on Sunday).

It was, I imagine, enjoyed by everyone, bar the TV cameraman, who had to contend with heavy rain splashing against his expensive equipment.

There was no friction and little enough chemistry between Pat and Seán. They were a bit like a father and son or uncle and nephew who meet up for a pint (when you could do that) and struggle to gel for the first hour or so. Still, they did grand, and it was great to have so much GAA action last weekend.

As for the Covid-enforced knockout aspect of the football championship, it certainly adds an exciting (if merciless) dynamic.

who had a great win over Monaghan. Perhaps the top two highlights of the weekend were provided by goalkeepers: Raymond Galligan struck that late winning free for Cavan, while Shaun Patton’s long, accurate and quick-thinking kick-out to set up Donegal’s goal against Tyrone was extraordinary (and had that poor cameraman on his toes!). * The ‘Season like no other’ comes to Hyde Park this Sunday, when Roscommon face Mayo, who accounted for a very game Leitrim last weekend.

I hear the positive soundings around Roscommon’s chances, but it will take an almighty effort to defeat Mayo. Here’s hoping Roscommon can do it!

All week…

It’s unlikely that Nobby Stiles – a fun-loving, accident-prone character off the field – would have made a great James Bond. Sean Connery probably wouldn’t have starred as a tough-tackling defensive midfielder for Manchester United and his country – although there is a ‘plot twist’ here – Connery was a promising footballer who

was actually offered a contract at Old Trafford by Matt Busby!

We lost a few more well-known figures over the past few days, and big names they were too.

Nobby Stiles and Sean Connery loomed large in our youth and their prime. Stiles – toothless and ruthless – entered football folklore as a World Cup winner with England (1966) and European Cup winner with Manchester United (1968).

The description of him in the Irish Independent this week – “Mild in disposition off the pitch, short-sighted, lacking in front teeth and standing just 5ft 6in” – explains why he was sometimes referred to as ‘The Toothless Tiger’.

He appears to have been a player ahead of his time – a holding midfielder before the term was established. Maybe a Roy Keane of the 1960’s.

Much-loved by the public, he had a special place in the hearts of fans, and that footage of his awkward, joyous dance on the Wembley pitch after England’s 1966 success over Germany is almost as iconic as Geoff Hurst’s decisive goal and Kenneth Wolstenholme’s immortal line of commentary…‘They think it’s all over…it is now’.

I recently read Bobby Charlton’s autobiography, and the legend’s love for Stiles was heartwarm-

ing. Charlton had many anecdotes detailing what a lovable character Nobby was off the pitch; definitely more Mr. Bean than James Bond! The great Charlton was also generous in his praise of Stiles’ qualities as a player.

Sean Connery was another big name over the decades. The super-smooth Scottish actor was the original James Bond, and is widely regarded as having been the best. (I grew up in the ‘Roger Moore as Bond’ era, and he was pretty smooth too). Connery excelled as Bond, but also went on to widespread big screen success, becoming one of the world’s most famous and charismatic actors.

Not quite as famous as the ‘Sexiest man alive’ nominee of 1989 (Connery) was the impish comedian, Bobby Ball, who also died last week. The name was Ball, Bobby Ball (well, his real name was Robert Harper). When Saturday night TV was all about double acts (mostly in the 1980’s) Bobby and his comedy partner Tommy Cannon made it big as Cannon and Ball. Sadly, both Bobby and Eddie Large of Little and Large have passed away from Covid-19 this year. Neither of those double acts were in the same league as Morecambe & Wise or The Two Ronnies, but they provided great family entertainment. Ball was very much the star of Cannon & Ball and the duo were still performing together up to a few weeks ago.

Bobby Ball will be fondly remembered.

Sadly, the great Robert Fisk has also died. I didn’t realise that the English-born journalist was resident in Dublin. He was a marvellous reporter/writer…knowledgeable, brave, brilliant.

Frank Bough, who also died recently, was – for people of that famous ‘certain age’ – a huge figure of our youth. Long-time presenter of Grandstand, the flagship BBC sports’ programme, his is an evocative name from an evocative era.

Tuesday/Wednesday I’ve been up half the night watching coverage of the remarkable American presidential election. On the school run this Wednesday morning, I catch the last ten minutes of ‘Breakfast’ on Newstalk. It’s comedian/actor Brendan O’Carroll, commenting on the election outcome. I switch to RTE Radio 1, where impressionist Oliver Callan is standing or sitting in for Ryan Tubridy. And they accuse Donald Trump of turning politics into a reality show! * Read my Election Night column on page 8

Regular vehicle checks On a weekly basis check the condition of wiper blades, that all vehicle lights (inside and outside) are working, that the oil and anti-freeze levels are sufficient including the water levels. Check your battery levels Make sure you have sufficient power for the full length of your journey and check that your charger is working efficiently.

PAUL HEALY’S ELECTION NIGHT WATCH

Staying up with Joe & Donald (and Wolf & John) I don’t have the energy for these late-night election results’ epics that I once had… but I wasn’t about to give up on tradition just yet.

Whether it’s an Irish, UK or American election, I’m always going to enter the Nocturnal Political Theatre, defy wilting eyelids, put up with the bemusement of my wife and children…and settle in for a TV feast well into the early hours.

Once upon a time you didn’t have to mutli-task when you subjected yourself to these marathon counts, these unfolding dramas…the only requirement (apart from staying awake) being to be a dab-hand with the remote control.

Now, since Twitter formally took over the world, there’s the extra stress of having to watch the rolling tweets of the lost souls of trendingville as they/we comment on every aspect of the election results’ saga.

Midnight

And so, as our living room slowly empties, like a bar in which the music has stopped and the barman is stacking the beer mats, I commit to another Election Night solo run, remote and laptop at the ready.

First decision: Which TV channel to watch? Inevitably, I switched over and back, like a Tyrone half-back line.

Caitríona Perry had a lot on her plate on RTE, anchoring the programme on her own (as far as I could see). It was a worthy ‘performance’

by Caitríona, but was never likely to be the main ‘go to’ channel of the night.

Sky News I found tedious enough. The BBC was better.

He’s been around the election block a long, long time, but Andrew Neil is still a very safe pair of hands – in fact more than that – he often has a nice edge to his presentation. He co-anchored with Katty Kay, who was also impressive.

For all my recent eyebrowraising in the direction of the chronically partisan CNN, it was hard not to spend most time in their company.

Main anchor Wolf Blitzer did a good job, while maintaining his (apparent) policy of never letting a smile break out. Star of the show (Twitter seemed to agree) was John King, who was masterful in his analysis and reporting, backed up by great graphics (a touchscreen which Wolf referred to as “a magic wall”). This was the slickest technology available across

the channels, and it was expertly used by the knowledgeable and extremely energetic King. I visualise Jon Snow at home, possibly with a glass of wine, muttering his frustration over Election Results Night budgets at the TV…

2 am

After 2 am, as results (or projected results) began to come in, it became apparent that there would be no blue wave, no Biden landslide.

Remarkably – and again calling opinion polling into question – Trump was doing extremely well. By 3 am, the tide seemed to be turning in his favour. It was dramatic.

On trending-ville on Twitter, the ‘locals’ were in shock.

I scanned the TV channels.

‘Critical Incident’ was starting on BBC 2 at 3 am; ‘Goodbye House’ was beginning on RTE 2, but there was no guaran-

tee that this scheduling was an omen for the formidable Trump.

Bill Maher was on Sky Comedy and Blue Murder on Virgin Media 2. Dr. Phil had the night off, just when half of Twitter could have done with his calming influence.

3.30 am

3.30 am, and I was beginning to wilt. It crossed my mind to try and stay up the entire night, but I had work on Wednesday. Sky were now interviewing nervous Democrat supporters in Arizona, one of whom said he will consider emigrating if Trump is returned to the White House.

Trump appeared to be winning Florida, Ohio, Michigan and Texas, and all eyes were now on North Carolina,

Wisconsin and Arizona. As for Pennsylvania, I think it may have been mentioned once or twice by the various commentators!

By 3.55 am, they were getting quite nervous on CNN. It was obvious that Trump, like Fianna Fáil in the good old days, had got the vote out! John King was still on fire. Sample quote (at 3.57 am): “We’ve always known if Joe Biden could rebuild the blue wall, forgive me, Donald Trump would pay for it”.

At 4.30 am, I made the big call…and went to bed. I left behind a consensus that Trump had excelled again, that Biden had underperformed, that a cliffhanger was evolving.

Biden could certainly still win, but Trump was breathing down his neck.

7.50 am

Either way, as I wrote here last week, the lawyers are rubbing their hands in glee. It will be a few days – more likely weeks – before we know the outcome of this dramatic election.

At 8.30 am, I switched briefly from Sky News to CNN. Chris Cuomo was frowning (over Trump’s conduct) and Don Lemon was doing his smug routine.

It was time for me to go to work. I turned the TV off.

I presumed that John King had finally gone to bed – and that Wolf Blitzer still wasn’t smiling.

At 7.50 am, I awoke, and turned on Sky News for more blah blah. Trump had addressed a party in the White House.

The President had called the

Over €300,000 in CLÁR funding for county Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, has announced details of over €4.1 million in funding to support 115 projects under Measure 1 and Measure 2 of the 2020 CLÁR programme. A breakdown of the figures shows that a total of €309,144 has been allocated to eight projects in County Roscommon.

CLÁR provides funding for smallscale projects in designated rural areas that have experienced significant levels of population decline.

The successful applicants in Roscommon include Kiltrustan Sports and Social Club (€44,097 for the upgrade of

club, lighting, social seating, outdoor table tennis and chess table), Ballymurray NS (€50,000 for car parking and associated footpath works), Elphin GAA Club (€50,000 for the refurbishment of handball alley and associated works), Clooneyquinn NS/Killina Church (€45,00 for a carpark, footpaths and street lighting), Brusna Community Park (€34,218 for the development of grounds, landscaping and track lighting ), Ballintubber Development Association Ltd (€37,690 for the provision of lighting on approach roads into Ballintubber village), Rahara NS (€13,500 for the installation of digital speed

safety lights and road markings), and Drumboylan Amenity Area (€34,639 for an amenity area and pedestrian crossing).

Deputy Denis Naughten welcomed an allocation of over €430,000 to projects across Roscommon and East Galway to address safety at schools and the upgrading of local community and sports facilities.

He said: “By supporting these investments CLÁR is helping to improve the quality of life in rural communities for families with young children”.

Minister of State at the Department of Health, Frank Feighan said: “I

warmly welcome this funding, which in many instances will improve pedestrian safety around many of our local schools, alongside improving many of our sporting and recreational facilities across Co. Roscommon, and in particular fund great progressive initiatives by local voluntary committees and school boards.

“I would like to warmly welcome funding for two projects in particular, one in my own constituency: €34,639 for Drumboylan amenity area, which will enable the development of additional facilities and parking for the amenity, and €50,000 for Elphin GAA

Club for the refurbishment of their handball alley”.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said: “During these difficult Covid times, it is now more important than ever that people living in rural areas have the necessary infrastructure to help them to stay in touch with each other.

“I was happy to make representations for a number of groups and would also be hopeful that additional local groups, which were not successful this time around, will see funding when further announcements are made shortly under Measure 3 of CLÁR”.

Ballinagare DJ up for Western Artists’ Award! < DAN DOONER

A Ballinagare resident has been nominated as ‘Disc Jockey of the Year’ in the 2020 Academy of Western Artists Awards, which were announced last weekend.

Richie Dee, who hosts a daily country music show on Freedom Live FM, is originally from Celbridge in Kildare but has been living in the County Roscommon village for the past five years.

The country music DJ said he was shocked when the announcement was made on Sunday.

“The nominees for the Academy of

Western Artists Awards were posted on Facebook and I couldn’t believe it when I saw my name. I’ve been nominated as the ‘DJ of 2020’ for the work I’ve done with independent country artists,” Richie said.

Richie’s show is broadcast live online at www.freedomlive.com, which was originally launched as Lockdown Live Radio following the outbreak of Covid-19.

“I have a great passion for independent country music,” Richie says, “I like to work with the guys producing music in their bedrooms.

“I broadcast from a small studio at home – it’s a nice studio that I put together due to

“My show is on Freedom Live Radio from 12 to 2 pm Monday to Friday and I interview independent artists as part of dedicated shows two other evenings a week.

The winners of this years Academy of Western Artists’ Awards will be announced in March or April of next year, as part of an Ballinagare DJ Richie Dee has been nominated for an Academy of online show due to Covid-19 restrictions.

John’s latest book is inspirational!

Convent of Mercy, Roscommon student, Alanna Hoare (13), won a Special Merit Award for an artwork entitled ‘Best Nanny Ever’ in this year’s Texaco Children’s Art Competition.

Two Roscommon students have won top prizes in this year’s 66th Texaco Children’s Art Competition.

In the 12-13 years age category, third prize went to Victoria Geraghty (13) from Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown for her self-portrait entitled ‘Just Me’.

Another Roscommon winner was Alanna Hoare (13), a pupil at Convent Of Mercy Roscommon, who won a Special Merit Award for an artwork entitled ‘Best Nanny Ever’.

Both compositions were said by final adjudicator and chairman of the judging panel, Professor Declan McGonagle, to be “imaginative and displaying high levels of skill”.

With the onset of Covid-19, the Competition had to be extended over a longer period this year with delays to the final adjudication process and the announcement of winners.

As a result, formal presentation of prizes had to be cancelled, as a consequence of which prizes will be delivered to artists by hand.

Victoria Geraghty (13) from Scoil Mhuire, Strokestown won third prize in the Texaco Children’s Art Competition in the 12-13 age group for her selfportrait entitled ‘Just Me’.

Popular Roscommon barber Paddy Joe Burke features in a new book by Curraghboy native John Scally.

The fundraising book for the Peter McVerry Trust is called Inspiration For all Seasons and is a collection of uplifting stories and reflections for our troubled times.

Part of the book recalls our past. Paddy Joe Burke expresses his disappointment at the demise of ‘the man with the turned-down wellingtons’.

He recalls: “Every Friday he cycled on his Raleigh bike to the Post Office to collect his pension, in his belted coat, cap on the side of his head, shovel tied on the bar of the bike and a well-worn biscuit neatly tied with old twine on the carrier behind him. Then he went on to the shop where each week he religiously bought a side of bacon, two batch loaves, a halfpound of butter, two pound of sausages; rolls of black and white pudding and his treat of choice…a packet of Kimberley biscuits. All were packed untidily on the back of the bicycle as he headed for home whistling Go Lassie Go’.

Tidy Towns competition will return next year < DAN DOONER

Local Tidy Towns groups have welcomed yesterday’s (Wednesday) announcement from the Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys, that the SuperValu TidyTowns Competition will go ahead next year.

This year’s competition was cancelled due to Covid-19 but the 2021 installment will be able to proceed with an “altered and adapted approach”, according to Minister Humphreys.

“As we look forward to next year, I want to assure all of the Tidy Towns groups and their volunteers, that there will be a SuperValu Tidy Towns competition in 2021. We may need to alter and adapt our approach to delivering the competition next year, given the on-going constraints posed by Covid, but we can attain the ethos of the competition that has stood the test of time so well,” the Minister said.

Chairperson of Curraghboy Tidy Towns group, Cllr. Tony Ward said the news was a huge boost to volunteers across the county.

“I am delighted that the compe-

tition will go ahead next year. It’s very welcome news, not only for Curraghboy Tidy Towns but for groups across County Roscommon.

“It was sorely missed this year.

While you’d be out working together and you would have a programme of work to get through, you would miss meeting up with other members just like a football team or indeed any other group.

“We are looking forward to getting back out into the community to get the work done and enhance the village,” he said.

An extraordinary week as killings spread shockwaves Frank…on recent tragedies that shocked the nation; sporting matters…and how not to use the tumble dryer…

It’s Monday morning: as I pulled back the curtains I was delighted to see that the sun was shining, the horrible rain and wind of the weekend seemed to have passed, and I decided to go for an early

walk up lovely Lenamarla to clear my head and reflect on what was by any standards an extraordinary week.

A week ago, the horrific story about the murder-suicide deaths of three members of the O’Sullivan family from outside Kanturk in Co. Cork broke. It spread shockwaves around the whole country.

Reports of the manner in which a father and son apparently plotted to kill the eldest son (Mark) before taking their own lives have

stunned people. It is extraordinary to think that a dispute over land could make two supposedly ordinary grown men act in such a murderous manner.

From newspaper reports today (Monday), it now appears that a decision may have been taken to not kill Anne O’Sullivan, in the belief that she would suffer more by being left behind to deal with the fall-out of the tragedy.

As has been widely reported, the poor lady was planning to give an

Good sporting weekend (pity about Paris) Back now to Saturday and for all of us sports fans it had to be one of the greatest all-day TV sports bonanzas of all times, with the highlight being a really good football match between neighbours Cavan and Monaghan, and the lowlight (yet again) being our rugby team’s abysmal performance in a vital game – against the French, over in Paris.

In my opinion, Cavan’s win puts even more gloss on the Rossies’ victory over them the previous week up in Breffni Park (now known as Kingspan), and despite Galway’s slightly improved showing against the Dubs (after their appalling show against Mayo) I am more convinced than ever that the winner of Roscommon and Mayo this coming weekend will win out in Connacht.

There is no doubt that this winter’s knockout championship, with some of the games played in appalling conditions, will throw up unusual results, and I just wonder if Roscommon or Mayo were to win the All-Ireland, with the continuing crackdown on crowd gatherings, how, or who, would keep control on the welcoming reception?

Anyway, that’s for another day. Meanwhile, on Saturday night, rugby supporters suffered another major disappointment when we went down to the French in what could have been a championship winning game. What hurts the most is the fact that it was a match we could and maybe should have won. This time we did compete quite well, but basic mistakes cost us dearly.

No matter how much pressure the French put us under, there can be no excuses for

professional players failing to perform the basics – several lost line-outs, knock-ons, at least two missed touch kicks from penalties, indiscipline and sloppy loose passing all cost us greatly, and there is no doubt this is one that got away.

There is a lot being made of Johnny Sexton’s petulant reaction to being substituted. Maybe it was a bit childish, but at the time the game could still have been won, and I for one was surprised when he was called ashore.

Age and the terrible abuse he has suffered at the hands of so many international teams (and other top club sides) may be starting to take its toll on him, but no man has given more of himself for the Irish cause, and, cranky or not, he has contributed so much to our recent successes. We owe him an awful lot.

The good news is that the Irish team doesn’t have too long to wait for their next outing, as the November internationals are coming up, so this disappointment will be quickly put behind them. We have some top class players, and please God we will have more good times coming down the line.

Taking a tumble…

Once upon a time when I was a young lad there was a popular ditty called ‘Three lovely lassies from Bandon’. For some reason it came into my mind over the weekend when I read about Three lovely laddies from Essex, who for reasons unknown decided to crawl into a derelict tumble dryer on Friday night.

Maybe they were cold or wet, or maybe they were just tired and wanted a sleep, but anyway they crawled in (or at least two of them did). Of course the last

lad got stuck and the emergency services had to be called – the Fire Brigade, police, Helicopter Medical Emergency Services and the Ambulance Hazardous Area Response Team were all sent to the scene, and had to use a range of heavy equipment to get the men out.

Now I’m sure getting stuck in a tumble dryer wouldn’t be great fun, especially if it was turned on, but I’d imagine you’d feel like an awful eejit if you did so and had to get so many emergen-

cy personnel to get you out.

The funny thing is that tumble dryers must hold a strange fascination for people in their 20s, because only a week or two earlier, 21-year old student Rosie Cole was rescued from a household one in Hull. She had been drinking wine and tequila (maybe that had something to do with it) in her student accommodation one night when she was dared to enter the dryer. Needless to say she got in but couldn’t get out, and, once again the Fire Brigade

had to come to the rescue.

Rosie said the firefighters had a good laugh at her predicament, and before they left they opened the washing machine and asked if anyone else wanted to have a go. Not surprisingly, they got no takers, but the message must be that if you want to use a tumble dryer – and in this type of weather they can be very useful, although a bit expensive to run – do put your clothes in (but not if you are still wearing them).

A day or so later we heard of three more murders, this time a mother and her two children in Dublin. What an awful series of tragedies. My thoughts are with all those who have been affected by them.

It’s good to talk (some welcome feedback!)

On Wednesday I got a text message from Jakes McCann, a friend I had worked with 46 years ago, and who I had met maybe once or twice since then, to tell me he had read a piece I wrote a few weeks back about our daughter’s Lisa’s wedding.

He said (this is for the editor’s attention) that he really enjoyed it, and that I was such a wonderful writer (I made that last bit up). As he lives in Drogheda, I presume he must have got it on the Internet.

Anyways, it was great to hear from him after such a long time. It gave me a welcome boost.

If that wasn’t good enough, the following day I got another message, this time from Carmel Macken, a woman I worked with at the same time, in Dundalk. She now lives in Ashbourne, and I have only met her once since 1974. She too had read the article. It was great to catch up with both of them.

Covid-19 really has ruined everything about our ordinary lives, but please God if we ever do get back to normal, we will all meet up have a pint or two – maybe even a bite to eat – and renew old acquaintances before we head off to wherever the next leg of the journey takes us.

And finally…

Finally for this week, in these lonely and unusual times out here in Creggs we must give full marks to the local GAA club, and its secretary, Eugene Hanley, for producing the club’s first ever newsletter last month.

A lovely colourful production, it was sent out to every house in the parish, keeping people up to date with happenings in the club. With so many restrictions on everyone due to Covid-19 it is a very welcome initiative – so well done to all involved – and long may it continue.

Is it okay to shop in my ‘bare necessities’, Minister?

They’d only just opened their doors following the last lockdown and now, many small, local, family-run business across Roscommon have been forced to lock up, pull down the shutters and cease trading…and why?

Because, under regulations, (which came into force on 22nd of October), our government decided they’re selling so-called ‘non-essential’ items such as underwear, socks, kiddies’ shirts, jumpers, warm coats, hats, scarves and gloves, etc. And, while it’s certainly not the Gardaí’s fault, (they’re just doing their job), inspections can be carried out in order to ensure compliance, and, in extreme cases, under what is a penal regulation, can bring about criminal charges against offenders.

Yep, you can be penalised for selling a warm coat and gloves to a senior

citizen, a pair of jammies to a woman in the throes of labour needing a fresh pair for the hospital, or a toy/book/box of lego, etc. to a mother, desperate to comfort a child missing his/her pals.

Well done FF/FG/Greens, you’ve not only left us joyless and penniless, but with your absurd ‘in-store’ purchases of ‘non-essentials’ being strictly verboten, you’ve also left us leaderless.

I do hope, come election time, voters across this country will remember that this government, in its chaotic attempts to lead, didn’t serve the people, rather they put the final nail in the coffin of our local businesses.

I have to tell you readers, never, in my worst nightmares, and, as a proud, free Irishwoman, did I think I’d hear the term ‘penal laws’ in the context of them being imposed against us by our fellow compatriots. For those

who may be confused, here’s the history bit. Following the Reformation, (1517-1648), Penal Laws were forced upon Irish Catholics in both the UK and Ireland in order to penalise those who practised their religion, imposing civil disabilities on them.

The last law was removed in 1829.

However, given the Minister for State for Employment Affairs and Retail Businesses Damien English, er, laid it bare on RTÉ’s Prime Time, stating that ‘socks fall under the category of clothes and are therefore non-essential items,’ it’s my opinion these penal laws (aka the popery code), are still very much in evidence!

I’m not talking about, (nor do I have sympathy for) so-called larger chain stores/supermarkets, they’ll survive, they’re selling food items, i.e. ‘essentials’. My concern lies solely with the

smaller haberdashery, DIY, newsagents, toy shops, gift shops, homeware stores, dry cleaners and fashion retailers, etc., across Roscommon.

I fail to understand why they can’t be trusted to remain open, allowing only customers wearing a mask to enter their premises one or two at a time.

This ridiculous law forces them to furlough staff and shut up shop with the possibility of facing a full closure.

Strange, given one minute Michéal’s telling us to shop local, the next he’s saying we’ll bring enforcement action against you if you’re caught… advising us instead to go ‘online’ and use other “ways and means” to gain access to goods and services, including “click and collect”. Great, but eh, I’m not sure about you Michéal but I don’t know many seniors who’re familiar with online shopping or in-

I’m neither shaken nor stirred by Connery’s passing Many will remember him as the original James Bond… the sexy, witty, gritty secret agent who made women go weak at the knees. Personally, the late Sean Connery made me sick to my stomach. Why? He was a man who, (in an interview with Playboy in 1965) said “I don’t think there is anything particularly wrong about hitting a woman – although I don’t recommend doing it in the same way that you’d hit a man”. Then, in order to push his point further, Connery added: “An open-handed slap is justified, if all other alternatives fail and there has been plenty of warning. If a woman is a b**ch, or hysterical, or bloody-minded continually, then I’d do it”.

Two decades later, as his comments were resurrected – in the course of an interview with US broadcast journalist Barbara Walters – the sexist, intolerant, arrogant individual bluntly and uncompromisingly insisted: “I haven’t changed my opinion”. Indeed, his first wife, the late Diane Cilento, claimed in her autobiography that Connery “physically and mentally” abused her. He denied the allegations. However, as I believe in being fair and balanced, I will say that in 2006, Connery, perhaps realising his earlier comments had negatively affected his persona, changed his tune, and said hitting women is wrong. Aw bless him. What a prince!

But what do you think folks? Was Connery an abusive individual or a sexy he-man? For me, it’s definitely the former. Therefore this week, as the tributes pour in, I have to wonder at the ability in our culture to view a man who openly admitted that he’d find it perfectly normal to raise his hands to a woman as being some sort of vodka-martini-swilling hero.

Remember readers, abusers come in all shapes, sizes and guises and for me Sean Connery was just a washed up, abusive has-been with a funny accent… but of course I do hope he rests in peace.

Considering the above, and wanting to be a law-abiding citizen, as clothing is now deemed ‘non-essential’ does it mean that this week, ‘wherever I wander, (and), wherever I roam,’ it’ll be okay for me to do it in my ‘bare necessities,’ so long as I cover my face with a mask? Or will I be breaching the Criminal Law Act of 2017 regarding public nudity? Perhaps Damien English could clarify that for me?

We will never see the likes of Robert Fisk again The world has lost one of its greatest, most honest, political correspondents of our time, Mr. Robert Fisk. Celebrated, respected and admired by just about everyone in the business (myself included), Mr. Fisk, who was born in the UK, took Irish citizenship and had a home in Dublin’s upmarket suburb of Dalkey. Apparently, his ties to this country began when he covered ‘The Troubles’ up north.

However, he was perhaps best known for securing not one, but three exclusive interviews with Al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden…I imagine being fluent in Arabic helped quite a bit. Mind you, acquiring this extraordinary skillset just goes to show the world the lengths this man was willing to go to in order to get his stories, and ultimately, to get to the truth. We may never see the likes of this gentleman again. Rest in peace Mr. Fisk, you were one of a kind.

So cherished is the little village of Ballyleague’s festive lights tradition, that the wonderful Christmas Lights Committee were all set last weekend to bring forward the colourful spirit-raising annual display in an attempt to lighten and brighten up our Covid-infused days and nights. However, due to the horrific weather, this joyful gesture of goodwill had to be temporarily postponed. SUNDAY GOSPEL REFLECTION Sunday 8 November 2020 According to marriage customs of Jesus’ day, a bride was first “betrothed” to her husband but continued for a time to live with her family. Then, at the appointed hour, some months later, the groom would come to claim her, leading her family and bridal party to the wedding feast that would celebrate and inaugurate their new life together.

This is the background to the parable of the last judgment we hear in today’s Gospel.

In the parable’s symbolism, Jesus is the Bridegroom (see Mark 2:19). In this, He fulfills God’s ancient promise to join himself forever to His chosen people as a husband cleaves to his bride (see Hosea 2:16–20). The virgins of the bridal party represent us, the members of the Church.

We were “betrothed” to Jesus in Baptism (see 2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:25–27) and are called to lives of holiness and devotion until He comes again to lead us to the heavenly wedding feast at the end of time (see Revelation 19:7–9; 21:1–4).

As St. Paul warns in today’s Epistle, Jesus is coming again, though we know not the day nor the hour.

We need to keep vigil throughout the dark night of this time in which our Bridegroom seems long delayed.

We need to keep our souls’ lamps filled with the oil of perseverance and desire for God – virtues that are extolled in today’s First Reading and Psalm.

We are to seek Him in love, meditating upon His kindness, calling upon His name, striving to be ever more worthy of Him, to be found without spot or blemish when He comes.

If we do this, we will be counted as wise and the oil for our lamps will not run dry (see 1 Kings 17:16).

We will perceive the Bridegroom, the Wisdom of God (see Proverbs 8:22–31, 35; 9:1–5), hastening toward us, beckoning us to the table He has prepared, the rich banquet which will satisfy our souls.

u esperava escrever um artigo sem ter que mencionar Covid-19, mas realmente não é possível no momento, é? Felizmente, o aumento das restrições parece ter um efeito imediato sobre os números, embora ainda seja muito cedo para complacência.

As restrições criaram outras questões que geraram debate. Damien English, ministro de estado para assuntos de emprego e negócios de varejo, apareceu no horário nobre da RTE na noite de quinta-feira passada e declarou que roupas não são essenciais! Em termos literais, ele está correto, pois não precisamos de roupas para sobreviver! Mas muitas pessoas gostam de comprar roupas e terapia de varejo pode ser considerada essencial quando tão pouca diversão está disponível para a maioria de nós agora!

Falando sério, eu posso entender a posição dos governos sobre esta questão. A ideia de aconselhar os grandes varejistas a não venderem produtos não essenciais, é proteger as lojas menores que tiveram que fechar totalmente, como fazem os supermercados essenciais, como os alimentos que os supermercados fazem. Se uma pequena loja de roupas deve permanecer fechada e perder sua renda, então certamente não seria justo permitir que os supermercados continuassem a vender roupas apenas porque eles estocam pão, leite etc., em outro corredor.

Como donos de uma pequena loja que vende produtos não essenciais, estamos fechados até o início de Dezembro. Algumas lojas de móveis permanecem abertas, provavelmente porque vendem produtos essenciais, como roupas de cama. Talvez

alguns deles também estejam vendendo outros itens, mas, para ser justo, como você isola 90% do seu estoque e diz aos clientes que eles só podem olhar o essencial? Nos tivemos varios pedidos de clientes querendo marcando um horario para dar uma olhada ou Rummage pela loja como gostamos de chamá-lo! Infelizmente, é exatamente isso que não podemos permitir.

Podemos facilitar o clique e a coleta, mas isso não inclui entrar na loja para dar uma olhada. É uma posição horrível de se estar, parece loucura recusar clientes nesta época do ano, mas não há muito o que podemos fazer a respeito, e se todos fizerem sua parte como são solicitados, então talvez possamos voltar a algo assemelhando-se à normalidade na época do Natal.

Em uma nota mais positiva, as vantagem do fechamento são evidentes em casa mais uma vez. Claro, é um momento difícil para muitas pessoas, especialmente para aqueles que vivem sozinhos, mas estamos aproveitando o tempo com qualidade que passamos com as crianças durante o periodo do recesso escolar. Os jogos em frente da lareira estão a todo vapor, da última vez foi o jogo de Cluedo, desta vez o bingo é a opção preferida. Os benefícios de acordar naturalmente, comer quando está com fome e dar um passeio à tarde são um grande lembrete de como um estilo de vida agitado pode muitas vezes ser prejudicial ao nosso bem-estar físico e mental. Claro, é ótimo estar ocupado e ativo, mas também é necessário desacelerar para recarregar as baterias, especialmente porque nenhum de nós estamos ficando mais jovens!

Apenas para rir!

Eu estava pensando aleatoriamente sobre algo engraçado que aconteceu conosco há muito tempo atras. Estávamos indo para a cidade natal de Ray Naas pela estrada mais cênica e estávamos passando por Edendery quando nosso carro quebrou. Foi um conserto simples, então nós o levamos para uma garagem e fomos informados que estaria pronto em meia hora.

Por isso decidimos matar o tempo com uma caminhada pela cidade. Acabamos em um pet shop, que parecia um mini zoológico e discutimos a possibilidade de libertar os animais !!

Brincadeira.

Lá fora, na calçada, havia uma grande gaiola de pássaros com um lindo papagaio sentadinho.

Ao sairmos da loja, um jovem que passou pelo papagaio cumprimentou-o em voz alta….

“Olá!” ao que o jovem respondeu “GET LOST” (na verdade, ele usou uma frase diferente, mas não é adequada para jornal familiar!)

Ficamos chocados e com pena do papagaio.

Ray se aproximou da gaiola, olhou com carinho para o papagaio que olhou para ele por um momento antes de dizer em voz alta “GET LOST!”. É hora de pegar o carro e dar o fora daqui!

was hoping to write an article without having to mention Covid-19, but it’s really not possible at the moment, is it? Thankfully, the increased restrictions appear to be having an immediate effect on numbers, although it’s too early yet for complacency.

The restrictions have created other issues, which in turn have sparked debate. Damien English (Minister of State for Employment Affairs and Retail Business) appeared on RTÉ’s Prime Time last Thursday night, and declared that clothes are not essential! In literal terms, he is correct – we do not need clothes to stay alive – but many people like to shop for clothes, and retail therapy might be deemed essential when so little other fun is available to most of us right now!

On a serious note though, I can understand the government’s stance on this issue. The idea of advising larger retailers not to sell non-essential goods is to protect the smaller shops that have had to close completely, as they don’t sell the essentials that the supermarkets do, like food.

If a small clothes shop must remain closed and lose their income, surely it’s unfair to allow supermarkets to continue to sell clothes just because they stock bread, milk, etc. in another aisle.

As the owners of a small shop that sells non-essential goods, we are closed until early December. Some furniture stores remain open, presumably as they sell essential items such as bedding. Perhaps some of them are selling other items too, but in fairness, how do you isolate 90% of your stock and tell customers they are only allowed to look at the essentials? We have had a number of requests from customers to make an appointment to come for a browse, or a rummage as we like to call it. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what we can’t allow. We can facilitate a ‘click and collect’ service, but that

does not include coming in to the shop for a look around.

It’s a horrible position to be in, and it seems insane to be turning customers away at this time of year, but there’s very little we can do about it. If everyone plays their part as they are asked, maybe we can return to something resembling normality in time for Christmas.

On a more positive note, the benefits of lockdown are evident at home once more. Of course it’s a tough time for so many people, especially those who live alone, but those of us with our families around us are enjoying the quality time we’re having with the kids. The games in front of the fire are in full flow – last time it was Cluedo overkill, this time bingo is the favoured option. The benefits of waking up naturally, eating when you’re hungry and going for an afternoon stroll are a great reminder of how a busy lifestyle can often be detrimental to our mental and physical well-being. Of course, it’s great to be busy and active but slowing down to recharge the batteries is needed too – especially as none of us are getting any younger!

Just for a laugh!

I was thinking randomly about something funny that happened to us a long time ago, so I thought I might share it with you! We were taking the scenic route to Ray’s home town of Naas, and were passing through Edenderry when our car broke down. It was a simple fix, so we got it to a garage and were told it would be ready in half an hour.

We decided to kill time with a walk around the town and ended up in a pet shop (they’re like mini-zoos) where we discussed the possibility of setting the animals free! Outside on the footpath was a large birdcage, with a beautiful parrot sat on his perch. As we exited the shop, a young man passed by and the parrot greeted him loudly with a, “Hello!”, to which the young man replied “GET LOST !” (He actually used a different phrase, but it’s not suitable for a family newspaper!).

Access For All boat makes waves! < DAN DOONER

The Covid-19 pandemic may have hampered its official launch this year, but the Lough Ree ‘Access For All’ boat is still making waves in Ballyleague-Lanesboro and has been hailed as an exciting project for the local area.

The boat, which was custom-built in Tallinn, Estonia, is aimed at providing people with disabilities with unlimited access to the waterways of Ireland. It can carry up to eight wheelchair users and is the only licenced passenger boat of its kind in Britain or Ireland.

The accessible vessel operates like a very small car ferry, with the bow lowering to allow wheelchair users to roll on and roll off. There is no lifting or hoisting and the design was concluded after consultation with members of the Independent Living Movement and Irish Wheelchair Association.

Fianna Fáil Senator Eugene Murphy said he expects the boat to be a “massive success” in Ballyleague-Lanesboro.

“I was really impressed with the structure of the Access For All boat and I think it’s a fantastic idea. Its arrival is very positive for the area and I think it will be a massive

success when things get back to normal.

“It really is an exciting project and I think it’s going to bring a lot of people into the area,” he said.

Gallowstown woman Dorothy Coyle and her husband Paul were invited along to the Lough Ree Angling Hub recently to take a ‘test cruise’ on the new purpose-built boat.

“We thought it was excellent and we had a brilliant time. We were lucky with the weather and the calm conditions (on Lough Ree). I love the water, my husband Paul doesn’t love it so much!

“The boat itself is a fabulous design and it’s a great way to get out on the water.

Normally it can fit more passengers but with Covid-19 restrictions the capacity has been reduced to four wheelchairs, two helpers and two crew members.

“Covid-19 has thrown a spanner in the works this year but the crew involved with the Lough Ree Access For All boat have great plans for next year,” she said.

It is hoped that the Access For All project will create up to fifteen jobs locally and that it will run on a full-time basis in 2021, offering a full range of tours on the water as well as bike hire and guided walking and fishing tours.

Lights, Camera, Action… €1.4m boost as horror movie shooting begins in Roscommon < DAN DOONER

Horror movie ‘The Cellar’, starring Elisha Cuthbert (24 and Happy Endings) and Eoin Macken (Nightshift) will begin filming at various locations across County Roscommon this month, and is estimated to be worth approximately €1.4 million to the local economy.

Shooting will take place from November 16th to 18th. The movie tells the story of Keira Woods (Cuthbert), whose daughter mysteriously vanishes in the cellar of their new house in the country. Keira soon discovers there is an ancient and powerful entity controlling their home that she must face or risk losing her family’s souls forever.

‘The Cellar’ comes from writerdirector Brendan Muldowney, whose previous film, ‘Pilgrimage’ premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The feature is an Irish-Belgian coproduction with Conor Barry of Savage Productions and Richard Bolger of Hail Mary Pictures as producers.

Wildcard Distribution will release the film in Irish cinemas next year.

Executive producer Patrick Ewald of Epic Pictures said: “The incredible combination of director Brendan Muldowney, producers Conor Barry and Richard Bolger, along with Elisha Cuthbert and Eoin Macken, make this unique and riveting horror story something special to capture the attention of buyers at AFM and audiences around the world”.

Writer-director, Brendan Muldowney, added that he was “very excited to be working with such a talented cast and crew to bring the world of The Cellar into people’s nightmares”.

The film is part-funded by Epic Pictures and by the Western Regional Audiovisual Producers Funds

Elisha Cuthbert and Eoin Macken will play the lead roles in ‘The Cellar’, a horror movie which is set to be filmed in Roscommon later this month.

(WRAP), which has estimated the project to be worth €1.4 million to the local economy when preparation, shooting, cast and crew wages, transport, catering and materials are taken into consideration.

Roscommon Arts Officer, Rhona McGrath, said the arrival of a film crew is “very good news” for the county.

“We’ve been working with the producers for a few months now ever since they started looking at Roscommon as a possible location.

“Roscommon and other local authorities contribute to the fund (WRAP) annually with the aim that it would support film producers.

“The film crew have been here for the last two weeks and more will arrive this month. They operate under the (Covid) guidelines of the film industry and will shoot at locations in Roscommon town, Castlerea and Boyle.

“We will also be opening up our council offices for them as they were impressed with how modern the building is.

“The Arts Office, management and elected members have all been very supportive and hopefully this will benefit us in the future with more and more film-makers making the most of our lovely scenery, our people and the county,” she said.

Mike Hourigan of Roscommon-based Mimar Media, has been working in a freelance role, assisting with scouting locations for the movie in County Roscommon. He said the county’s Arts Office is putting its best foot forward in promoting Roscommon as a venue for movie shoots.

“The Roscommon Film Liaison role was something that former Arts Officer, Mary Mullins, had the foresight to put in place prior to her retirement towards the end of 2019.

“I have been assisting on this particular production since March of 2020 under its working title ‘The Ten Steps’.

Initially I assisted their location scouts

with sourcing and visiting suitable locations throughout the county.

“Having a dedicated person available on the ground locally, who understands the specific requirements involved in a production of this scale and who can get things moving even before the production arrives, is essential if we are to attract films of this calibre.

“More recently I have been working closely with Rhona McGrath and we have been engaging with the production team over the last few months, facilitating their requirements and ensuring their experience of filming in Roscommon will be an enjoyable one,” he said.

‘The months since the first lockdown have been willingly squandered’ < GLYN CARRAGHER

Two weeks into another lockdown, and there is extensive media focus on the measures we must all now adhere to.

The rise of the virus is causing huge anxiety amongst many of our citizens, many of whom are vulnerable and fear entering the dark winter months that lie ahead in a time of great uncertainty and confusion. The question of whether we should or shouldn’t enter lockdown is no longer a matter for debate. The questions must now be, ‘Why have we failed? Why have we returned to where we were over seven months ago?’

During the recent Covid-19

Oireachtas committee hearings, Mr. Paul Reid (CEO of the HSE) told us that in 2009, the HSE estimated that they required 579 ICU beds. They never got them. In April of this year, the HSE had 354. By the end of September this year, in the middle of a global pandemic, we have a total of 280 ICU beds. The government has provided extra ‘winter’ funding, which, after implementation, will hopefully deliver a national total of 297 ICU beds. They have also increased funding to the greyhound racing industry, which now receives more State funding than adolescent mental health services.

NPHET has advised a Level

5 lockdown. The government will enforce this with fines and penalties, not with any significant increase in the capacity of our health services. But then, perhaps NPHET only advises on how to use limited resources, rather than providing adequate

services? If required, we will buy services from the Irish private health sector, continuing the Irish political tradition of diverting health funding to private shareholders’ wealth, rather than defending public citizens’ health.

The evidence is clear – the intervening months since the first lockdown have been willingly squandered. A select few have profited, both financially and politically, and as always, the people of Ireland have paid.

And we will pay again in the dark winter months ahead – financially, socially, and mentally – and in the cases of health services forgone, some will even pay with their lives.

The message has changed. We are no longer trying to ‘defeat the virus’. Now we are just simply trying to bring the numbers down, trying to win a break for Christmas before the next lockdown begins.

Will we use this time to fix

our broken society? I would like to think so, but I suspect that the chances of that happening are roughly the same as the chances of the political elite lowering their weekly pay to the PUP level in solidarity with the people of Ireland. We are all in this storm together, but as they say, we are not all in the same boat. I fear that when this ends, nothing will have changed.

It will, as always, be as George Orwell reflected in Animal Farm, i.e. that “It somehow seemed as though the farm had grown richer without making the animals themselves any richer – except, of course, for the pigs and the dogs”.

BULLOCK SALE COVID 19 RESTRICTIONS IN PLACE FOR BOTH BUYERS AND SELLERS

€12 million pay-out to local GLAS farmers – Naughten This week, a combined €12 million in advance payments under the Green Low-Carbon Agri Environment Scheme (GLAS) is to be paid to over 3,300 farmers across Roscommon and Galway this week.

This will be a “vital financial boost during what has been a difficult year for the whole community”, local TD Denis Naughten said.

“The payment, at a rate of 85% of the full annual amount, will be paid out to over three-quarters of the local farmers participating under the GLAS scheme, and I hope that the outstanding payments to approximately 500 more local farmers will be issued without delay,” added Denis Naughten.

“It is also important to point out that for 2,500 local farmers, this is their last payment under the current GLAS programme.

It is vital that this scheme is rolled over in 2021 without any risk that penalties that

might be applied next year would be applied to the full term of the existing fiveyear contract.

“Clarity must also be provided for farmers finishing their current five-year contract that had included leased land where that lease is now expiring. Provision must also be made for up to nine hundred local farmers who have been frozen out of agri-environment schemes since AEOS ended or have Natura lands but are not in a GLAS scheme”.

To facilitate the five hundred local farmers who will not receive a GLAS payment this week, the Department has extended hours of operation of its GLAS Helpline from Monday to Friday on the morning of Saturday, November 7th, and Saturday, November 14th, up to 1.30 pm. The GLAS Helpdesk can be contacted at 076 1064451 and farmers can also submit any queries they may have by email to GLAS@agriculture.gov.ie.

Callaghan slams six Irish MEPs over CAP motion Cllr. Liam Callaghan says it is “beyond belief that six Irish MEPs supported a motion to scrap CAP reform altogether” in the European Parliment.

He warned that the consequences of such a vote would result in no agreed CAP, no agreed transition regulation for the next two years, and also put at risk farm payments in 2021.

“CAP payments are worth over €1.8 billion to rural Ireland, and only last week, €135 millon in GLAS payments were paid to farmers”.

Cllr. Callaghan said the motion was

“thankfully” defeated by over 75% of MEPs, which he said included all Fine Gael MEPs. He added: “The six MEPs I am referring to are Ciaran Cuffe and Grace O’Sullivan of the Green party, Chris MacManus of Sinn Féin, and independents Clare Daly, Mick Wallace and Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan”.

Cllr. Callaghan said it is “incredible” that farm families were exposed to such a “high-risk vote” by these six Irish MEPs, with no interim plan in place.

Roscommon MART WATCH There was a good entry of excellent quality cattle on offer at Friday’s online sale on October 30th 2020, which included a special sale of bullocks. There was a very brisk trade from start to finish, resulting in a high percentage of lots sold.

Average prices ranged from €2.25 per kilo up to €2.86 per kilo. Heifers numbers were small due to next week’s special sale: prices ranged from €2.03 per kilo up to €2.37 kilo with the majority of lots sold.

Dry cows numbers increased this week, with lots averaging from €1.48 per kilo up to €2.08 per kilo.

There will be a special sale of heifers, as well as bullocks and dry cows, on Friday, November 6th, at 11 am, with 60 pens on offer.

Sales commence at 11.30 am, with intake from 7.30 am to 9.30 am.

Viewing is by appointment from 10 am to 10.45 am, with limited access to the ring for buyers only.

Gates close at 9.45 am.

Life is plastic but ‘CUSP’ reductions could be drastic!

Local start-up develops app to fight waste < DAN DOONER

A Roscommon start-up has developed a mobile app which it says can reduce single-use plastic in households by 1kg per month in order to help the county reach 2030 targets set out in the Climate Action Plan.

Simon Ruddy, CEO and founder of CUSP (Cease Using Single-Use Plastic), which is based at the new start-up Cube space at Áras an Chontae in Roscommon town, says the app stemmed from a need

to localise the fight against single-use plastic.

“We started looking at this in 2018 and a lot of the stories (around single-use plastic) dealt with the big global picture. We wanted to break it down to something people could relate to,” he said.

The CUSP team blended data from a variety of sources and broke the information down to get plastic-use figures for Irish counties, towns, villages and ultimately, households.

“In terms of Roscommon,

the county currently generates 3,900 tonnes of singleuse plastic each year. To put that in context, you would need 85 Olympicsized swimming pools to hold that amount of plastic.

“All of the reduction plans recommend that we need to reduce single-use plastic by 70% over the next decade, which would put Roscommon at 1,200 tonnes by 2030. This means a reduction of 270 tonnes per year,” Simon added.

CEO and founder of CUSP, Simon Ruddy, says the new mobile app can help Roscommon households reach single-use plastic reduction targets by 2030.

“Each household in County Roscommon is currently generating 14kgs of singleuse plastic each month, which is the equivalent of 250 plastic 2-litre bottles. That’s the highest per household in Europe,” he added.

In an attempt to move the public off plastic, the CUSP app has been designed to help those households by identifying 1kg of that single-use plastic to be reduced each month and to repeat that reduction for one year. A further kilogram will then be identified in year two, and so on, until the household is hitting the recommended amount by 2030.

The early signs for the app have been good. A pilot study, carried out by local Transition Year students, saw 200 families making reductions of 2.5kgs, which, if replicated across Co. Roscommon, would lead to 2030 reduction targets being achieved by October 2025.

Construction of houses in Monksland completed Roscommon County Council has announced the completion of the construction of two new homes at Old Tuam Road, Monksland, Athlone.

The modern ‘A’ building energy rated homes were designed by Roscommonbased CollinsBoyd Engineers and Architects, and constructed by Loftus Construction Ltd, a Galway-based building contractor.

The development included the compulsory purchase and demolition of a derelict dwelling, and the construction of two modern, semi-detached, three-bedroomed, two-storey residential dwellings.

Cllr. Laurence Fallon, Cathaoirleach of Roscommon County Council, said: “I would like to compliment the Housing Business Unit of Roscommon County Council on the delivery of a very impressive development. I would also like to wish the new tenants the very best of luck in their new homes”.

War of Independence in Roscommon 100 years ago A

s autumn drew into winter in 1920, there was still no let-up in hostilities between the IRA and British forces in Ireland. Both at home and abroad, the first week of November was marked by executions.

In Dublin, Kevin Barry, an 18-year-old medical student who had been court-martialed and found guilty of complicity in an ambush in Dublin where three British soldiers were killed, had been sentenced to death and was hanged in Mountjoy Jail. Kevin Barry’s court-martial and death sentence was a highly emotive case, and there had been strong appeals made, both nationally and internationally, to the British government for reprieve of the death sentence, but all to no avail. He went to the gallows on Monday morning, November 1st 1920, “when just a lad of eighteen summers”, as the ballad written about his execution goes.

Evidence of Barry being tortured while in custody and his execution at a young age inflamed nationalist public opinion in Ireland, especially coming so soon after Terence MacSwiney’s death on hunger strike. Barry was the first Irish Republican executed by the British since the rebel executions of 1916.

The following day saw another execution – this time in faraway India, when Ballymoeborn James Joseph Daly, who had been found guilty of leading the Connacht Rangers Mutiny the previous summer, was executed by firing squad in Dagshai Prison. The hunger strike martyrdom of MacSwiney and the latest executions precipitated an escalation in violence as the War of Independence entered its bloodiest phase.

Back in Roscommon, Black and Tan reprisal killings were becoming commonplace.

Immediately following the executions of Kevin Barry and James Daly, summary execution came to the quiet townland of Rathconnor, Fourmilehouse. On the night of November 3rd 1920, a party of RIC/Black and Tans commandeered a lorry in Roscommon town and drove out to the residence of John Conroy in Rathconnor. They then entered the house with blackened faces and guns drawn.

In the house were John Conroy, his wife and two neighbours. Conroy was first detained in a room off the kitchen and questioned.

He was then told to remove his coat before being taken from the house by the Tans and marched a short distance up the road where he was shot dead. His lifeless body was later found by the two neighbours; he had been shot in the head and torso.

His body was returned to the house and waked that night. John Conroy was thirty-two years old, a stonemason and married with an infant daughter. The reason he was forced to remove his coat was so he would be easily seen in the dark if he tried to escape. His random murder was believed to have been a reprisal for the Fourmilehouse ambush that had occurred a few weeks previously.

Less than three weeks later, the Black and Tans struck again. This time, Paddy Flynn of Tarmon, Castlerea, was their victim. Flynn, aged twenty-four, was an officer in the 2nd (Castlerea) Battalion of the IRA and was ‘on the run’. He had gone to stay in the house of a neighbour, John Monaghan of Tarmon, a townland north-east of Castlerea. On the night of November 21st, Flynn, feeling hungry

and exhausted, had eaten a meal and retired to bed. As soon as his head hit the pillow he fell fast asleep. Later that night, the house was suddenly raided by Black and Tans, who burst in the door and went straight to where Paddy Flynn was sleeping and shot him several times as he lay in bed.

taking place throughout the county on a regular basis. In Elphin, an incident occurred resulting in the shooting and wounding of an RIC man, and a Black and Tan was shot and wounded in Tarmonbarry. At Castlenode, outside Strokestown, volunteers had a lucky escape when they came under ferocious gunfire from members of the British army in a skirmish involving the attempted seizure of a motorcar.

On December 20th, a few days before Christmas, a unit of Black and Tans surrounded the house of Pat Dwyer of Rathkeery, Frenchpark. Inside the house was Pat Dwyer Senior, his son Pat Junior, and a volunteer ‘on the run’ named John McGowan of Portahard. The raiders first hauled Pat Dwyer Junior to the door, where he was identified by an unknown person, hidden in the dark. Pat Junior was then knocked unconscious, and John McGowan was then taken to the door for a similar identification.

As soon as the unidentified person, hidden in the dark outside, named him as John McGowan, McGowan was immediately shot dead on the doorstep by a Black and Tan. Before leaving the scene, the Black and Tan raiders completely wrecked the contents of the farmhouse, leaving a scene of death, shock and disarray in their path. It was believed the targeting and murder of John McGowan was a reprisal for the Tibohine ambush, which had occurred three months earlier.

By the autumn of 1920, the War of Independence had escalated to a new level, as can be seen from other events that were happening countrywide. In Dublin, November 21st – a date that became known as ‘Bloody Sunday’ – saw much bloodshed in the capital.

On that Sunday morning, one of the most significant events to take place during the war occurred when many members of the undercover British intelligence group, known as the ‘Cairo Gang’, were assassinated at different locations in the south inner-city.

The assassinations were carried out by IRA volunteers, and members of Michael Collins’ squad.

By the day’s end, there had been even more

deaths in Dublin, with three killings within the walls of Dublin Castle, and a football match between Dublin and Tipperary in Croke Park being invaded by Black and Tans and Auxiliaries. The crown forces entered the grounds and began firing randomly at the spectators, killing fourteen people – including a player on the field – and wounding up to seventy others.

The most devastating ambush to take place during the whole war occurred towards the end of 1920 in west Cork. A flying column, led by the legendary IRA commander Tom Barry, ambushed two lorries of Auxilaries at a place called Kilmichael between Macroom and Dunmanway on November 28th. In total, eighteen members of the crown forces were killed and three IRA men lost their lives in the fight.

Such was the political impact of the ambush in British government circles, that extra security was imposed at London’s Downing Street as a precaution against IRA attacks.

The owner of the house, John Monaghan, would have received the same fate had he not managed to escape through an upstairs window. Before leaving the scene, the raiders set Monaghan’s house on fire. The shooting of Paddy Flynn had all the hallmarks of the work of a unit of RIC/Black and Tans that operated from Castlerea, known as the ‘Castlerea Murder Gang’, of which we will learn more about in later articles.

Two days later, on November 23rd, a Black and Tan disappeared from the barracks at Rooskey. His body was later discovered in the River Shannon. Encounters involving IRA volunteers and crown forces were

In the October article, I covered the shooting of Patrick Doyle of Drummin, Ballinagare by the Black and Tans in 1920 and I mentioned that it was believed that he had no connection with the IRA. When researching this incident, I spoke with locals and historians from that area and they informed me that Pat Doyle was not a member of the IRA. Their evidence came from neighbours and close relatives of the deceased man.

A letter to the Roscommon People of October 16th seems to contradict this fact, and puts forward evidence that Pat Doyle was indeed a member of the IRA. When I brought this letter to the attention of my sources, they were still extremely adamant that their evidence was true and their stance on the issue hadn’t changed.

So there I rest my case. I have to say that it is believed Pat Doyle had no connection with the IRA. – An Starai Aitiuil

Update on house prices locally

In Roscommon, prices in the third quarter of 2020 were 2% higher than a year previously, compared to a rise of 1% seen a year ago. The average house price is now €143,000, 56% above its lowest point.

Nationally the average listed price of housing rose by 4.8% between June and September, according to the latest Daft.ie House Price Report released by Ireland’s largest property website, daft.ie.

The jump offsets falls earlier in the year and means that the average sale price nationwide in the third quarter of 2020 was €263,750, up 2.7% on the same period in 2019 and 60% higher than its lowest point in early 2013. Listed prices rose in all 54 markets contained in the Daft.ie Report between June and September, although there were significant differences around the country.

We, Mary, Siobhán and Deirdre, the family of the late Tom Judge, (Roscommon Town and formerly Clooncrim, Ballinlough), wish to express our deepest gratitude and appreciation for all the kindness, support and sympathy shown to us on the recent and sad loss of our wonderful husband and father, Tom. The numerous letters, cards, phone calls and texts that we received provided immense comfort during a most difficult time. We were overwhelmed and touched by the vast amount of messages left on the condolence pages of Rip.ie and it was especially heart-warming to read the many memories recalled by his former students of whom he was so fond.

Due to the Covid-19 restrictions in April, we were unable to give Tom the funeral that he deserved.

However, a special thank you to Miriam Hunt for her beautiful music at Tom’s funeral mass, which strengthened our hearts on the most difficult day.

Thank you to Pat and Gillian Smyth, Funeral Directors, for your professionalism and expertise and for your support in the weeks that followed.

Thank you to Tom’s teaching colleagues, past-pupils, friends, neighbours and the members of Roscommon Golf Club who lined the streets of Roscommon with a Guard of Honour from the church to the cemetery.

Your show of support was incredibly moving and is a memory that we will always cherish.

Despite the fact that Offaly are also in the group along with Roscommon and Wexford, this game on Sunday in Clane is essentially a knockout match, with the winners progressing and the losers missing out in light of Wexford defeating Offaly (3-10 to 1-8) in the opening round last Sunday.

Roscommon manager Michael Finneran is very happy with the preparations for the championship

and with the attitude of the players.

“We have put in eight weeks of training and the players have been great. They have all been so enthusiastic and they all want to play…it was an advantage to have the club championship so we could look at players and we have a good panel put together. It’s a pity that we didn’t have a league match or two – to get warmed up – because challenge games are not the same, and we are going into the game cold as it were, but we will be hoping to guard against that”.

Michael says that Wexford will be difficult opposition.

“They are a good side. They are one of a couple of teams in this intermediate championship who have been playing in Division Two, which is an

advantage to them. I think we should be good enough to beat them, but we will have our work cut out.

“We are well fit to win this game.

It’s a pity that the supporters can’t be there but the game will be streamed by the LGFA”.

In October, Roscommon cut their panel from forty-five players down to thirty. The good news is that Alanna Hanmore, Joanne Cregg and Natalie McHugh are all back, and there are eight new players as well.

Elaine Murren, Lauren Curran, Lisa O’Rourke, Rachel Corcoran, Mikeala McHugh, Niamh Ward, Niamh Watson and Ciara Corcoran are the new names, and that infusion of fresh young talent will be a big boost on Sunday.

Prediction: Roscommon.

It’ll be the last chance saloon for Roscommon hurlers when they face Sligo in the Christy Ring Cup in Athleague this Sunday.

Roscommon came from fifteen points down in the last thirty minutes against Wicklow only to run out of time and lose by two points. That turnaround has given the players and management great hope as they prepare for Sunday’s match against a side who are on the way up following their spectacular win in the Nicky Rackard Cup last year, when they defeated Armagh by a point in the final.

Roscommon manager Johnny Keane says he has been thrilled by the positive attitude of the Roscommon players since the defeat to Wicklow.

“We have re-grouped after the Wicklow match and the honesty of the players has been great. We played well in the final thirty minutes of that match, but the trick now is to turn that into a seventy-minute display.

“We have a full bill of health and lads like Johnny Coyne and Cillian Egan who came on the last day are fully fit now and in contention for a place on the starting fifteen this week”.

The manager accepted that Roscom-

mon would be expected to defeat Sligo at home, but says he is expecting a very tough match.

“Sligo are an improving team. We played them in a challenge game recently and they gave us plenty to think about. There will not be much in it.

“They are managed by Padraig Mannion (Athleague’s senior manager this year) who will know the Roscommon set-up like the back of his hand, so we will have to be very careful.

“We will be looking to win this match and get to a semi-final. It would be great to get to the last four and see where that will take us”.

Johnny Coyne and Cillian Egan are likely to start. Experienced players like Naos Connaughton, Hugh Rooney, Pat Nolan, Peter Kellehan, Eamon Flanagan, Shane Curley and Cathal Dolan will have crucial roles to play. Boosted by home advantage, Roscommon should advance.

Prediction: Roscommon.

Cillian inspires Mayo to victory Connacht SFC quarter-final Mayo 2-15 Leitrim 0-10 < SEAMUS DUKE

Mayo did what they had to do to overcome the hurdle of Leitrim in the opening round of the Connacht SFC at Carrick-on-Shannon last Sunday.

An eleven-point win would suggest a very one-sided game, but a plucky Leitrim side never gave up and it ensured that Mayo had to work hard to earn their semi-final crack at Roscommon next Sunday.

So, what would Roscommon have learned from the match? The Mayo

full-forward line of Tommy Conroy and Aidan O’Shea – and Cillian O’Connor in particular – were excellent. O’Connor was back to his best – scoring 1-9 – and his return to full fitness is a huge boost to James Horan’s men.

When Aidan O’Shea is on form he is very hard to mark and Roscommon will have to devise a game plan to deal with him. Further back, Mayo started with eight debutants and it is certain that a number of more established players like Kevin McLoughlin, Mark Moran and maybe even Keith Higgins will be in the starting line-up at Dr. Hyde Park.

It has to be said that the conditions

were awful. The heavy rain and strong wind ensured that the pitch at Avantcard Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada cut up very badly and it certainly affected the players on both sides.

Leitrim had the aid of the elements in the opening half. Playing some very intelligent football, they raced into a 0-4 to 0-0 lead after 12 minutes.

But once Mayo shook off their cobwebs the strong favourites were back in the match. O’Connor was having a major influence all over the field and once Tommy Conroy scored a fine goal in the 23rd minute they were in business. At half-time they led by 1-6 to 0-6.

Despite Leitrim’s valiant efforts

Mayo were simply too strong and O’Connor capped a brilliant individual performance with a superb goal in the 49th minute. The eleven-point margin flattered Mayo but they did what they had to do and will be travelling to Roscommon this weekend with a valuable championship match under their belts.

Pundits have spent this week drawing comparisons between the big showdown at Dr. Hyde Park and the US Presidential Elections, but for me, Sunday’s semi-final shootout in the Connacht Caucus is more like the US Primaries in many ways.

Fierce provincial rivals but also close neighbours, Roscommon and Mayo will both be hoping to declare victory and thus remain in the race for the Connacht nomination this year.

Make no mistake; the winners on Sunday will be installed as heavy favourites to lift the JJ Nestor Cup. They then have a wonderful opportunity to go forth in search of Sam as the province’s only representative in a year when anything is possible!

Sunday’s game not only offers both sides a fiercely competitive test – something which Galway may be short on – but also odds-on favourtism for a winner-takes-all shot at the ‘Golden Ticket’ for this year’s All-Ireland series.

Roscommon have purred in their last two matches without really reaching the heights they are no doubt capable of. The signs have been good and when fully fit and available, Anthony Cunning-

ham’s panel boasts an array of attacking talent that must be the envy of many other counties.

Work, steel and energy were some of the topics raised during the respective US Presidential campaigns, and right now there appears to be an abundance of all three within this group of players.

Mayo, a team which thrives on a long and busy campaign trail, have struggled in this disjointed year of Covid, and were being relegated to Division Two as Roscommon moved in the opposite direction.

Their performance against Donegal, however, raised hopes – in a county which has never needed any encouragement – that this is a team with genuine Connacht championship aspirations.

The professional performance to beat Leitrim in difficult conditions, and the form of Cillian O’Connor in particular, provides further evidence that the Green and Red could be waiting in the long, frost-bitten grass.

While a win this Sunday by no means guarantees either county Connacht success, it does, to borrow a phrase from our friends in the US networks, set out a clear path to victory in the province, as well as providing a ticket for the national contest in this, the year of the head-to-heads.

I am very impressed by the way Anthony Cunningham has Roscommon set up. Their defence has improved out of all recognition.

The quality of the players on the Roscommon bench is also a huge factor. They have some great players to call on.

What I like about this Roscommon team is that they will not throw in the towel as they used to do against Mayo over the years in the championship, so this will be a cracking game of football.

Roscommon are in the best shape they’ve been in for a number of years. However, expectations are also higher than they have been, which is also a factor. Roscommon have a very strong panel while Mayo look a little more unsettled.

What are your thoughts on Roscommon?

Roscommon have almost have a full panel, and Anthony Cunningham is doing a really good job there since he came in. Enda Smith is playing great football, and he is an inspiration to the rest of the team.

The two wins against Armagh and Cavan were very impressive, and both of those teams have already won in the Ulster Championship, so the form is good.

What are your thoughts on Mayo?

Mayo had a big win against Galway in the league, but to be honest, I thought that was a bit of a freak result – they are not as good as that.

Mayo will be confident, but Anthony Cunningham is a very underestimated manager, and he will have Roscommon ready for the battle.

And your winner is?

It should be a great game. There will not be much in it and I have to say I fancy Roscommon to win it.

I think Roscommon can reach another Connacht final.

What are your thoughts on Roscommon?

I have been very impressed with Roscommon, and the fact that they have not let in a goal in the past six matches is a warning to Mayo.

Roscommon come into the match with the better momentum after the wins against Armagh and Cavan and the promotion, while Mayo have been erratic all year.

What are your thoughts on Mayo?

I am not sure Mayo know who their best starting fifteen are.

There is a possibility that Diarmuid O’Connor, Chris Barrett and Kevin McLoughlin will come into the team.

It’s also hard to know where the best place for Aidan O’Shea is. I would like to see him being played further out the field.

And your winner is?

I think that the bookies’ odds (Roscommon 9/4; Mayo 4/9) are crazy. It’s a 50/50 match.

One thing is for certain: Mayo will have to come up with a huge performance if they are to win this game. No one here in Mayo is taking Roscommon for granted.

It will be a very tight championship game, and the hope here in Mayo is that the team can come up with a big display and edge home by a point or two.

The midfield clash will be vital, and if Mayo can get the better of that, they can just about win it.

What are your thoughts on Mayo?

Aidan O’Shea will have a crucial role to play and I presume that Sean Mullooly will be marking him – what a clash that will be. I am also very impressed

by Tommy Conroy for Mayo. He is a real goal threat.

And your winner is?

I am giving Roscommon a massive chance on Sunday. The midfield clash will be absolutely crucial, and Roscommon will have to get at least a 50/50 share in that sector if they are to win.

I am giving a very hesitant vote to Mayo – but I won’t be surprised if Roscommon win it.

What are your thoughts on Mayo?

Aidan O’Shea will be very influential. I am expecting that he will play at full-forward, but he is also effective at midfield and gives Mayo several options in that regard. But Roscommon have tightened up in defence considerably and that could be crucial.

And your winner is?

I am expecting a really big performance from both sides. The midfield clash will be hugely important. Roscommon have struggled in that sector in the past, so they must perform well there to have a chance.

I like the way Roscommon have been shaping up, and while Mayo are always hard to beat in the championship, I’m giving Roscommon a marginal vote to win narrowly.

Even before the arrival of Covid-19 to our shores, the prospect of a clash between these two old rivals was

very much on the cards.

Roscommon were due to play London and Mayo were facing Leitrim. A repeat of last year’s semi-final meeting was ‘on’. The will become a reality on Sunday, but not in a way anyone could ever have thought. It will take place six months later than scheduled, and will now go ahead in front of empty stands and terraces. But it promises to be no less intriguing and no less

intense either.

There is a feeling of giddy excitement in both counties this week – and with good reason too. Although Mayo were recently relegated from Division One for the first time in 23 years, that is not as big a story as it would be in a normal year.

When you dig a little deeper, James Horan’s side have played well since the long break. They hammered Galway and were unlucky

not to have beaten Tyrone in Castlebar in their final league game. They won easily against Leitrim last Sunday. I was at that game, and always got the feeling that they had one eye firmly fixed on the clash with Roscommon.

Horan has introduced a number of impressive young players and it will be very interesting to see how many of them start on Sunday. Players from

the old guard like Kevin McLoughlin and Keith Higgins are back to fitness and will probably start.

Mark Moran, one of the young guns, was sensational against Galway, and will probably also be in the first fifteen. He was left out last Sunday as ‘a precaution’.

With the likes of Oisin Mullen, Eoghan McLaughlin, Jordan Flynn and Tommy Conroy joining familiar names like Lee Keegan,

Cunningham: ‘Roscommon players will give it everything’ < SEAMUS DUKE

Roscommon manager Anthony Cunningham says he is very happy with the effort and level of commitment being shown by the players in what are trying circumstances.

“I have nothing but the highest of respect for the commitment that they are giving.

They are putting in such a huge effort to bring people a bit of enjoyment. They are fantastic young men. They are not professionals. They are putting in a huge effort and one can only admire them for what they are doing”.

Cunningham said it will be hard to whittle the squad down to the match-day 26, given that so many players were involved in Roscommon’s two

recent league games.

“It will be hard to reduce the panel but in truth we had intended to use as many players as we could for the two league games so that worked out very well. It was good to test the panel. The lads played well in both games. Competition for places is everything and having everyone fit is a big bonus.

You always want plenty of players going well in training and we have that at the moment”.

Needless to say the Roscommon manager is well aware of the scale of the challenge facing his team this Sunday.

“Mayo have been the second best team in the country for the last decade and are a fantastic team. But it’s brilliant to be playing in these big

matches. It is a huge challenge for us…it can’t come quickly enough.

He is confident of having a full squad to choose from as Conor Daly has recovered from the injury he sustained against Armagh.

“Yes, thankfully we will have a full squad to choose from, which is great. But then you never know what can happen in training – but fingers crossed we hope to have everyone in contention for a starting place.

“There is a huge incentive for us…we know that while the supporters will not be there at the match, we will still have a big support behind us. We will be giving everything on the day. Let’s see where that takes us”.

Paddy Durcan, Aidan O’Shea and the fully fit Cillian O’Connor, it is still a very good Mayo side.

Make no mistake, the Green and Red still have lofty ambitions.

Things really could not have gone much better for Roscommon since training and games resumed. With so many players back after injury and other reasons, Anthony Cunningham and his selectors have almost their strongest panel to call on. It’s the first time that has happened in recent years.

The strength of that panel was underlined when there were a dozen changes in personnel after the win in Armagh – and yet the team recorded a very impressive win against Cavan to secure the Division Two title. It is a sign that there is strong competition for places in all areas of the field, which is always very positive. Conor Daly is fit again and there’s a full clean bill of health in the panel.

Aidan O’Shea seems to play his best football at fullforward and his expected clash with Sean Mullooly could tip the balance one way or the other. The Strokestown man is playing the best football of his career and will relish that challenge if it materialises.

Down the other end of the field I will be amazed if James Horan does not detail Lee Keegan to shadow Conor Cox. Keegan has

been involved in many an intense battle over the years and is a very dogged and tough opponent.

Cillian O’Connor is back to his best. I was very impressed by his work-rate last Sunday. He is now one of the leaders on this Mayo team. Another major threat to Roscommon will come from Paddy Durcan in the half-back line. He is a magnificent player who links up so well with the attack.

Young Tommy Conroy has added a considerable goal threat to the Mayo attack so he will have to be marshalled well. He still has to show what he can do at championship level.

The Roscommon defence has not conceded a goal in their last six competitive games and if they could manage that feat again on Sunday they would be more than half-way to victory. If Cathal Compton and Tadhg O’Rourke are at midfield, then it is crucial that they get at least an equal share of possession.

The Roscommon attack has been excellent of late.

This year they are not as reliant on Conor Cox for their scores as was the case last year. Niall Kilroy will do the hard work as usual and is a vital member of the team. Enda Smith is having a great year so far and how he performs will be absolutely vital to Roscommon’s cause.

Cathal Cregg is playing the best football of his career, and Cian McKeon has

been a revelation this year.

After his heroics against Cavan, it will be hard to leave Donie Smith out of the starting fifteen. If he is chosen, Ciaran Lennon might be the unlucky one, but he would be a great man to have in reserve.

Both benches will have a big bearing on the outcome. Roscommon will be able to call on players of the calibre of the Murtaghs, Shane Killoran, Conor Devaney and Conor Hussey.

They are all players with plenty of championship experience. In fact it’s a very

exciting prospect for Roscommon fans.

Weather-wise, the teams will have to adapt to the conditions on the day. At least we know that the Dr. Hyde Park pitch will be in good condition irrespective of the weather conditions.

Mayo are never easily beaten – especially in the championship – and they will be coming to Hyde Park to avenge that defeat last year in Castlebar.

It will be so strange to go to a Roscommon v Mayo match with no crowds, no banter and no atmosphere.

However, for the players on the field and the hundreds of thousands of people watching on TV, it still promises to be a great championship game. I have really liked what I have seen from Roscommon in recent weeks.

They are a well managed team and it’s a very strong panel. I am not underestimating the Mayo challenge for one minute, but I have a feeling that Roscommon will be good enough to win by a point or two and send the armchair Rossies into ecstasy.

Prediction: Roscommon.

Having seen his side beat Leitrim by eleven points in Carrick-on-Shannon last Sunday, Mayo manager James Horan was just happy that his team had got the job done, meaning all concerned could now turn their focus to Dr. Hyde Park this weekend.

James Horan spoke to the Roscommon People: “We struggled a bit early on…

Leitrim played very well and were full of energy and it took us a while to get going, but we got through the game. We have no injuries, we had six debutants starting and two more came on, so it was great to get football into those lads”.

The Mayo boss hinted that some of their more estab-

lished players might return for the Roscommon game, but – unsurprisingly – he wasn’t giving anything away.

“We have a lot of good young players on the panel and we have plenty of (older) lads who are at various stages of fitness. We feel we have a nice blend of youth and experience now. We have a huge amount of work to do this week ahead of the Roscommon game.

“We will see how guys are going at training first before we make up our minds (about team selection). I know that we will have a lot of players in contention for starting places during the week. We will not decide on our team until the last possible minute but there is a great buzz in the squad at the moment and

the lads are just delighted to be playing football”.

Horan is relishing this Sunday’s game. “I’m expecting a huge challenge from Roscommon. They are the Division Two champions, the match is in Hyde Park… they are confident and they are a very well organised and fit team. It will be a very big contest for us but one we are really looking forward to”.

He added: “Every game is completely different. Roscommon have a very different set-up to Leitrim. They (Leitrim) had double sweepers in the first half there today and every team has a different way of playing, so you have to adapt – but we will be concentrating on our own game”.
