September... wow! This year is absolutely flying by! I've officially been in the adult world of work for a year now. It feels like just yesterday I was living in my student digs and stressing over my dissertation...

Chocolate is my weakness. If we’re out for supper and there’s a chocolate fondant or chocolate mousse on the menu – it’s pretty hard to muster up any will power. If I’m having a stressful day of work, if I’m baking a cake for a friend’s birthday or if my husband and I are curling up with Game of Thrones – there’s usually some chocolate involved. Chocolate makes everything better. It’s comfort food defined. My brother’s girlfriend hates the stuff and though I adore her, I can’t quite get my head around it.

But as far as sweet treats go, there is a huge amount of medically proven evidence to suggest that certain types of chocolate (the darker kind of at least 70%+) may not be quite as naughty as we once thought. There is a god!

It can also be fantastic for circulation and the heart. Studies have found that dark chocolate helps restore flexibility to arteries while also prohibiting white blood cells from sticking to the walls of blood vessels - both common causes of artery blockages.

It has been shown to reduce levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) and raise levels of good cholesterol, potentially lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease.

On that note, Theobroma Cacao, the Latin name for chocolate, actually means “Food of the Gods”.

Sure, we shouldn’t be eating an entire bag of MilkyBar buttons for breakfast, lunch and dinner. That would be OTT. But if you’re thinking of having a cube or two tonight, go for it because you might actually be doing yourself some good.

Dark chocolate with a high cocoa content is loaded with minerals, nutrients and soluble fibre that can help keep you fit and healthy. Made from the seed of the cocoa tree, it’s one of the best antioxidants in the world.

For example, a 100g bar of dark chocolate with 70-85% cocoa contains 11g of fibre, 89% of the recommended daily amount of copper and 98% of the recommended daily amount of manganese. It also contains lots of potassium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium. Still 100g (even of the dark stuff) amounts to over 600 calories and moderate amounts of sugar.

Everything in moderation is a good adage to follow here.

Now, let’s get into some of the benefits…

Studies have shown that chocolate can help to maintain proper brain function as we grow older. The flavanols found in cocoa are thought to reduce memory loss and the anti-inflammatory qualities of dark chocolate have in fact helped to treat brain injuries such as concussion. The flavonols can also help to protect the skin from the sun.

There is also proof that chocolate can make you feel better (if we didn’t already know!). It contains phenylethylamine (PEA) or the ‘love drug’ as it’s often nicknamed - the same chemical that your

If the cocoa is farmed by those who care about what they’re doing, it tastes ten times better. Similarly, artisan chocolatiers are also becoming more popular as many chocolate lovers move away from the massproduced, cheap stuff.

It has even been suggested that cocoa may be able to help those suffering from autism and even obesity. What’s more, researchers in Finland have proven that chocolate consumption lowers the risk of suffering a stroke - by a staggering 17% average in the group of people they tested.

Wait for it… chocolate can supposedly help you lose weight.

What is this hocus pocus?!

Well, neuroscientist Will Clower says a small square of good dark chocolate melted on the tongue 20 minutes before a meal triggers the hormones in the brain to tell you you’re full, reducing the amount of food you subsequently eat. Finishing a meal with the same small trigger could reduce any midnight snacking too. Cocoa has also been shown to improve insulin sensitivity.

So, small amounts of dark chocolate could potentially delay or prevent the onset of diabetes.

Another Finnish study found that chocolate can reduce stress in expectant mothers, and that the babies of such mothers smiled more often than those of non-chocolate-eating parents.

It goes without saying that while research shows that cocoa can have a beneficial effect on the mind and body, the reverse is true for sugar. Eating sweetened chocolate is still not great for you.

Chocolate labelled as “sugar free” probably contains unhealthy artificial sweeteners too, so beware of that red herring.

Try and make sure your chocolate is at least 70% (85% if you can) dark chocolate and you’ll be on the right track.

Meet Jet

At 12 years old, Jet enjoyed an active lifestyle and was always out and about until earlier this year.

His owners became aware that he was suddenly quieter, seemed wobbly on his legs and appeared nervous.

The easy thing to assume was that age was catching up with Jet but with the severity of his sudden symptoms, his owners brought him in to Isabelle Vets to be checked.

Jet was thoroughly examined and a series of blood tests were run in our in-house laboratory. These showed that Jet was suffering from intermittent episodes of hypoglycaemia or low blood sugar- the opposite to being a diabetic cat. Low blood glucose causes lethargy initially, but can also lead to seizures and eventually a coma state if left untreated.

Jet lives with another cat who is diabetic and is treated with tablets to lower his blood sugar. His owners wondered if Jet might have accidentally been getting access to his housemate's medicine which was causing the adverse effects.

This possibility was eliminated and still Jet was suffering from, at points, dangerously low levels of blood glucose.

Further tests were carried out and surgeon Doreen Ford became suspicious of a tumour in Jet's pancreas which might have been over producing insulin (the hormone responsible for reducing levels of glucose in the blood). Such tumours are rare in cats but Jet had high levels of circulating insulin and this type of tumour was the main suspected cause. These growths can be small and difficult to detect in cats and they can also be malignant, having the ability to spread to tissues other than the pancreas.

It was decided to ‘image’ Jet's chest and abdomen in Isabelle Vet's CT scanner in order to try to identify a pancreatic tumours and look for any spread of the disease. With the aid of a scan using intravenous contrast dye, a single nodule was located in Jet's pancreas and fortunately, there was no evidence of spread of the disease.

The pink arrow shows the mass in the pancreas which measured 1.4cm by 0.9cm.

This allowed vet Doreen Ford to know exactly what she was looking for when she operated to remove the lump in Jet's pancreas. The pancreas is a delicate organ which requires minimal handling in surgery and the CT scan provided such accurate information regarding the location and size of the tumour, that this allowed for the required limited manipulation of the pancreas at surgery.

Isabelle Vets Latest News Isabelle Vets L’Islet surgery since its opening last month has been exceptionally well received by our clients. Everyone comments on the pleasant environment and the improved staffing and the new Siemens C.T scanner and hydrotherapy centre are proving popular and helping the animals on Guernsey. The air-conditioned, modern consultancy base has been great for clients and vets in the recent hot weather.

Heather Fenwick has been appointed as Head Nurse for the whole Practice running a nursing and hydrotherapy team of fourteen staff. By providing a hierarchy we are already seeing the benefit of improved efficiency which will again help further in providing the care and attention that your pet deserves.

After a short stay in hospital whereby Jet's blood glucose could be regularly monitored, he was discharged and is now feeling much more like his old self and is happily back to running around and enjoying life as before.

The rarity of Jet's condition and his amazing journey back to health make him a true ‘Pet Hero’.

"When I heard that the brightest meteor shower in Earth’s history was going to be taking place, there was only one thing for it. Heading out with with the camera. With some previous experience in photographing the milky way and the night sky clearing up nicely, I was all set and the conditions were perfect. Around 11pm the milky way was clearly visible and it was time to get shooting.

I really enjoy astro photography as it provides a different perspective on what we can usually see with our eyes and ultimately makes me wonder… what is out there?"

With his long blonde hair bleached from weeks of sun and surf, Enzo is busy building sand castles at Vazon Bay. As I look down at him from the top of the Slipway, he could be any 10 year old child enjoying his Summer holiday, but Enzo is not your average 10 year old…Enzo is a champion for the environment!

For the past two years, Enzo and his Mum Barbara have been coming down to Vazon Bay every day throughout the Summer and once a week during the colder months, to spend a few hours cleaning up litter from the beach. They collect bottle lids, bits of plastic, broken glass, ropes, empty bottles and other rubbish that would otherwise wash out to sea, polluting our oceans and killing sea life.

This quiet boy comes to life when talking about his clean-up adventures on the beach. “The weirdest thing we’ve found are these bullets” Enzo tells me and shows me a collection of 10 empty bullet cartridges. “But we also found a gold ring once which we took to the Police station” Along with these interesting finds, Enzo and his Mum have picked up many fish hooks which are incredibly dangerous to have lying around on the beach and Enzo says his message to beach goers is “Please bag it and bin it”

Mum Barb says that despite all their efforts she sometimes feels like they’re losing the battle to keep the environment clean. Each day they return to the beach to find the tide has washed in more rubbish and the hard work begins again. Barb says unfortunately a lot of the rubbish turning up on our beaches is dropped overboard by people on boats and ships and they need to be more responsible, but she points out that she has noticed an improvement in the awareness and behavior of young people on our beaches in recent times “They do seem to be picking up after themselves more now than they used to, which is encouraging” While Enzo and his Mum throw a lot of the rubbish they collect into the bin, they are saving the bottle lids and other ‘interesting’ stuff they find to donate to the Art Department at Elizabeth College, where they hope it can be put to creative use. They have also made a large cross from driftwood they’ve found and decorated it with the colourful pieces of sea glass they’ve collected from Vazon Bay. The result is quite beautiful and this extraordinary piece of art will be on display at the South Show and later Enzo hopes to have it placed permanently at St Martins Church.

Enzo is part of a very environmentally aware family. He told me his Mum was

“Always picking stuff up” and so with her gentle encouragement, he decided to join her in this crusade a couple of years ago.

They also assist with the Co-op beach cleans and Enzo’s 17 year old brother Jenson is currently doing a Summer beach cleaning contract through the States Works.

Barb grew up on Guernsey beaches and wanted the same lifestyle for her 5 children. When I asked her if Enzo receives any pocket money for his cleaning work, she said his only reward is the freedom of running around our beautiful beach and swimming in the sea “Once or twice we’ve found 10p in the sand, so I let him keep it!” she laughs.

With a clean environment obviously one of Enzo’s main goals, I asked him what he wants to be when he grows up. He said he wanted to be a marine biologist and train dolphins, but his Dad told him it’s cruel to keep dolphins in captivity, so Enzo’s reassessing his options. At just 10 years of age, this environmental champion has plenty of time to figure out what his future looks like and due to his dedication and hard work, it looks like the future of the beach at Vazon Bay is in good hands.

YOUNG PEOPLE FROM THE HUB FLY OFF FOR THRILLSEEKING ADVENTURE Young people from The HUB were fortunate enough to fly off to the UK for an amazing day of fun at Paultons Theme Park earlier this month, courtesy of Blue Islands.

Nine young people, along with staff and a volunteer, left for Southampton on what turned out to be one of the wettest days of the year. However, the rain could not dampen the spirits of the young people who thoroughly enjoyed the thrill-seeking day out.

Many of the young people had never experienced travelling by plane or travelled outside of Guernsey before. One young person said, ‘This is the best day ever, I wish we could come back every day.’

Senior project worker at The HUB, Rosie Williams, said, ‘We were rather worried that the weather may ruin the day for some of the young people but much to our delight they hardly even noticed the awful weather conditions because they were having so much fun.

SUPPORTING HEALTHY EATING AT GUERNSEY YOUTH COMMISSION PLAYSCHEME the Channel Islands Co-operative Society has supported healthy eating for children by donating fruit to this year’s Playscheme organised by the Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney.

The six-week scheme for children, aged between five and eleven, offers educational and fun activities including arts and crafts, music, drama, games, cookery, sports and day trips to local places of interest. It takes referrals from Health & Social Care and local charities with the cost of attending kept to a minimum to help families on a tight budget.

‘This is a wonderful scheme, organised by the Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney, which the children enjoy and helps families during the summer holidays,’ said Tanya Dorrity, The Channel Islands Co-operative Society’s community officer.

‘The Society is delighted to support the Playscheme again this year, by providing fruit to encourage healthy eating by the children and helping take them on a journey across the world.’

‘For some, simply travelling to the destination was a special occasion in itself.

The day at the theme park is an experience they will treasure forever. It has been an amazing opportunity for young people who have faced many difficulties in their lives and we are extremely grateful for all of Blue Islands’ generosity.’

Hampshire-based Paultons Park was recently voted the UK’s best-rated amusement park for the second year running in TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Awards. Paultons Park – home of Peppa Pig World and Lost Kingdom – has more than 70 rides and attractions for children and young people to enjoy.

The HUB is a service delivered by The Youth Commission which offers a safe and confidential space for children and young people to access one-to-one, structured and evidence-based emotional support.

Wigwam Support Group and The Youth Commission for Guernsey and Alderney are next to travel to the theme park as part of the three charities chosen by Blue Islands to enjoy the opportunity. 36 young people in total will get the chance to experience this fabulous theme park.

Blue Islands CEO, Rob Veron, said, ‘As a Channel Islands based airline we are keen to support local charities and the people they work with. Hearing about the young people’s adventures has been simply fantastic and everyone at Blue Islands is thrilled they had such a terrific time. We hope it is an experience they will remember for years to come, and with two more groups to go, there are even memories to be made.”

APPLEBY SUPPORTS "TEE OFF WITH MATT LE TISSIER" CHILDREN'S GOLF MORNING Sunday 6th August saw the first of a series of events arranged by the Guernsey Golf Union in conjunction with local Golf Clubs and supported by the law firm, Appleby to encourage more children to take up golf.

40 boys and girls aged between 5 and 11, most of whom had never oaching.

Eric Legg, President of the Guernsey Golf Union, said “I was absolutely delighted with the way the morning went. Everybody enjoyed themselves and even some of the parents had a go on the driving range!”

Anthony Williams, Partner at Appleby, said “We are excited to be supporting golf in the community – it was fantastic to see so many youngsters enjoying themselves and coming away from the event with such a positive first experience of golf. Thanks to the L’Ancresse Golf Club for organising the event and the Royal Guernsey Golf Club for use of the facilities. Thank you also to Matt Le Tissier for giving up his time to make Sunday such a success. We look forward to working with the Guernsey Golf Union in organising more events like these in the future.”

Every one of the children left with a goodie bag supplied by Appleby, and a certificate signed by Matt, as well as having the opportunity to get a photo with him.

Chocolate & gingersnap pots Brought to you by Waitrose

Method 1. Divide most of the crushed ginger nuts between 8 small glasses and drizzle over the rum or brandy. Set aside.

2. Meanwhile, in a large heatproof bowl, whisk together the butter and sugar until pale and creamy. Whisk in the egg.

3. Place the milk in a saucepan and bring to a gentle simmer. Remove from the heat and add the chocolate then whisk until it has melted and the mixture is smooth. Whisk into the sugar mixture.

Ingredients - 150g essential Waitrose Ginger Nuts, smashed into pieces - 75ml rum or brandy - 100g unsalted butter - 125g golden caster sugar - 1 medium essential Waitrose Free Range Egg - 200ml whole milk - 2x 100g bars Green & Black’s Organic 70% Dark Chocolate, broken into pieces

4. Spoon the mixture into the glasses, sprinkle over the reserved biscuit crumbs and leave to cool. Chill for at least 8 hours or ideally overnight.

As well as assisting the local neonatal unit and providing support to families of premature babies and those with children who have serious or life-threatening illnesses, the charity also provides accommodation in Southampton for families to stay in whilst their children are being treated in the UK. Most islanders will be aware of the Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation, the charity set up by Jo and Andy Priaulx in 2003 following the premature births of both of their children. As well as assisting the local neonatal unit and providing support to families of premature babies and those with children who have serious or life-threatening illnesses, the charity also provides accommodation in Southampton for families to stay in whilst their children are being treated in the UK. Although already managing an apartment in Southampton that was gifted to PPBF on a 10-year lease basis, in 2015 the charity decided that it needed to buy a flat of its own. To get the funds to do this, it came up with the hugely successful ‘Buy-a-Brick’ campaign, the proceeds of which would allow the PPBF to buy ‘The Burrow’, a property next to Southampton Hospital. The campaign was so successful that the foundation raised approximately £270,000 in a year, smashing their three-year target of £150,000. This success was recognised when the charity won Fundraising Team of the Year at the 2016 Guernsey Community Awards.

costs should they need to go to the UK, and putting together and then distributing ‘Baby Boxes’ to the parents of all babies who are in the unit for more than a few days. “We include a lot of items,” says Ali. “Prem baby clothes, nappies, things to help with feeding, knitted blankets, gifts for mum...teddy bears, muslins, nappy creams.” It’s an exhaustive list; consequently the cost of each box is not insignificant. But they are invaluable to the parents who receive them. As Ali says, “It’s a positive thing during a difficult time. It should be a positive time in their lives but it’s just been turned on its head.”

In order for the charity to keep on doing its indispensable work, it has to remain in the public eye to ensure there is a steady flow of money into its coffers, and this isn’t always easy.

Everyone involved with the charity has to juggle the foundation’s work with their own commitments. “It’s fitting it all in,” says Jo. “But you have got to put the effort in. Personally, I feel if you don’t put the effort in, it does slow down. In everything you do, I think.”

And it’s not just as simple as raising some cash and then spending it, as Ali explains: “There’s that sense of responsibility of what you do with the money. It’s not your money. It belongs to the island, the community, and you’ve got to make sure that what you do with it is the right thing to do. Whether that’s buying a piece of equipment for the hospital...or helping a family go over to Southampton and paying for their flights, you always need to be able to justify that expense.”

Shortly after purchasing their new apartment, the charity was unexpectedly and very kindly given the property that it had been managing. Obviously, this has its advantages, as Jo explains: “Sometimes we can’t help everyone... sometimes we can have three people at once that want the flat...but now we’ve got two [properties] it’ll be better.”

While it is of great benefit to the families the PPBF helps, managing the two properties is not without its challenges: “We need to raise between £45,000 and £65,000 a year,” says Jo, these being the estimated figures to cover the running costs of the charity, including the two apartments. Ali Lihou, the foundation’s secretary and Jo’s right-hand woman, continues: “Although we had some financial commitments such as running the other flat, we’ve gone from running one property to owning two properties, so there is a bigger commitment, we’ve got to do it now.”

As well as finding the funds to manage the apartments, the foundation also has to ensure it has enough money to continue its other activities, such as providing the neonatal unit with new equipment, assisting families with flight and accommodation

There’s an emotional toll, too: “We usually end up in tears,” says Jo, talking about the phone calls they receive asking for help. Ali continues: “We lead such sheltered little lives in our little bubbles with our family and friends, and you think as an island you know everything that’s going on, and then we meet some families for whom life is incredibly tough, it’s really important to us to be able to help as much as we can.”

The Priaulx Premature Baby Foundation provides an invaluable service to the people of Guernsey who need it. On such a small island, there’s a good chance you know someone who has been assisted by the charity, and that’s why it’s important we keep supporting the foundation in everything it does. Because without the kind donations of the public, families in traumatic circumstances may not benefit from the lifeline that the PPBF provides. And that would be a terrible shame.

LE MONT SAINT GARAGE 30TH ANNIVERSARY Photography Chris George The team at Le Mont Saint Garage were joined by hundreds of guests as they celebrated their 30th anniversary in style with a packed out party at St James on Monday 31st July.

The garage was founded in 1987 by Dave Beausire in a basic workshop. Thirty years on it holds the

franchises for Fiat, Abarth and Alfa Romeo and is a thriving local business which accounts for 10% of all new car sales in Guernsey.

Business associates from the past three decades joined Dave and his family for a night of celebrations and entertainment, with UK acts performing alongside local band the Day Trippers.

As a family business, the anniversary was an appropriate time for Dave to officially hand over the reins of the company to his two sons, Peter and Michael.

They are now joint Managing Directors of Le Mont Saint Garage, while Dave will step up to Chairman.

Dave was keen to support local charities as part of his anniversary celebrations, and the party gave the garage a public opportunity to make the draw for a Fiat 500. 1,200 tickets had been sold at ÂŁ25 each and as the car had been donated entirely by the garage the sales raised a total of ÂŁ30,000. That was split equally between Channel Island Air Search, the RNLI and St John Ambulance and was gratefully received by all three organisations.

BERMUDA SHORTS WEEK RETURNED FOR BIGGER AND BETTER IN 2017 Photography black vanilla Monday 7th August saw the return of Bermuda Shorts Week, Male Uprising in Guernsey’s (MUG) summer awareness campaign. Over 30 organisations got behind the suit-swapping initiative, trading in their usual office attire for the traditional Bermudian summer wear of shorts and long socks for the week.

Butterfield generously sponsored the event for this year, sourcing and branding 250 pairs of official Bermuda Shorts Week socks. The Bermudian bank also provided a special breakfast to launch the week, where participants heard a talk about skin cancer, and had the opportunity to meet others also taking part.

Organised by MUG, the primary aim of the week was to raise awareness of male cancers and the importance of sun safety, with the funds raised helping to provide sun cream dispensers in local schools across the Bailiwick.

Attending the breakfast was Dr Edward Partridge, GP, who has specialist interest in skin cancer medicine, he said; ‘Simply put, prevention is better than cure and the early recognition of a skin cancer is more likely to lead to a simpler and more successful treatment.’

The initiative was such a success that it was oversubscribed, with the initial 250 pairs of socks selling out within a week and the charity hopes it will become an annual event.

Praising the event’s success, MUG council member Michael Richards says; ‘It was great to see so many men and women support the short this year. We hope to make this a standout event in the island’s social calendar every summer.’

HARBOUR CARNIVAL Photography Chris George This year’s Harbour Carnival held on Friday 11th August was awash with entertainment, live music and the events that have become synonymous with this annual fundraising festival of fun. Organised by the Guernsey Round Table, Harbour Carnival also celebrated 10 years of sponsorship by RBC Wealth Management which helped create a real birthday feel to proceedings.

From the amazingly decorated ducks race to the paddle board race, the evening was packed with activity. Teams of ladies competed for a coveted prize by paddling a dinghy containing four of their team across the mouth of the marina, collecting two additional competitors for the return made fiendishly

difficult with the absence of any oars. A perennial favourite, the Man-Powered Flight in the Victoria Marina, came with the usual outlandish fancy-dress and was won, perhaps fittingly, by the team from RBC. To celebrate RBC’s 10th anniversary of support for Harbour Carnival, the RBC Fundraising Cup was launched and awarded to the event team or individual who raised the most amount of money. The birthday theme was extended to the very popular best- dressed duck competition, open to primary school children and, for the first year, also those at pre-school. This year was a very family affair with a brother and sister taking home the top prizes with their striking creations for the lucky ducks.

This year the charity beneficiary of 50% of the funds raised was The HUB’s Sunflower Project which provides emotional support to children who have experienced bereavement or a serious illness in the family. Over those 10 years, more than 15,000 mini ducks have been sold, 175 local charities and organisations have benefited and £162,552 raised by the whole event, testament to the work by the legions of volunteers and support agencies that have helped make Harbour Carnival such a huge community event.

Over the span of a few days you can study the necessary theory and practice your new findings in the sea with qualified diving instructors. For those of you who already do so you’ll understand the feeling that comes with your first dive. After the initial nerves have left and your descent into the depths begins, your breathing slows and you begin to enjoy the feeling of weightlessness and being immersed in a magical underwater world. The bubbles drift above your head to the surface as you exhale and settle on the soft white sand beneath you before signalling the ok to the rest of the dive group and heading off in search of mystical underwater creatures. Alongside many different species of fish it’s possible to spot whale sharks, although it could just be a fleeting glance of the magnificent creatures as they swim off into the depths, Utila is a hot spot for these giants and another reason it’s so popular for divers to visit. Although catching a glimpse of them isn’t guaranteed, if you visit during the right season your chances are much higher. There is also a dedicated research centre here dedicated to the study of them due to their frequent sightings.

Dolphins also enjoy the warm waters and can be spotted on many occasions whilst out on the dive boats.

Jumping in and swimming with these amazing creatures is an absolute joy, playful and friendly and in their natural habitat, it is the best way to see these animals and a wonderful experience. Surrounded by shoals of fish, walls of coral and the darkening depths below you, diving really is everything I was told it would be,

One of the best things about Guernsey has to be the delicious food on offer. For those of us who grew up here, we no doubt share fond memories of crab sandwiches on the beach after school, thick slabs of Guernsey butter on toast after windy walks on the West Coast and Bean Jar on wintery evenings by the fire.

And it’s not only locals who are passionate about Sarnian cuisine. Guernsey fudge is taken all over the world as an island souvenir and Guernsey Gâche has become somewhat infamous. Even my colleagues in New Zealand had heard of it!

Guernsey prides itself on good quality, sustainable produce and you’ll get just that at the plethora of bars, kiosks, cafes, pubs, restaurants and bistros dotted across the island. So without further ado, I’m rounding up the Top 10 local delicacies.

GUERNSEY BEAN JAR

Bean jar is as close to traditional Guernsey food as it comes. It’s basically our national dish. A cousin to cassoulet perhaps, it’s proper folksy, hearty food. If you’re looking for some stick-to-your-ribs grub and a cheap recipe to make a few quid last several days it’s a real winner.

Guernsey cheese is pretty special, wouldn’t you agree? At the 2008 World Cheese Awards, the Guernsey Dairy’s smoked cheese won a gold medal, with its mild and extra mature cheeses each winning Bronze. The Guernsey Dairy recently introduced a soft cheese or “Frie d’Or” (translated in the island’s indigenous Dgernésiais as “meadow of gold”). There are also a range of specialty flavoured cheeses (garlic, thyme, chilli) that are produced annually for the Christmas market.

It’s not only the dairy that’s raising the reputation of local cheese. Mandy and Peter Girard keep a herd of Golden Guernsey Goats.

Around the back of their house you can buy the soft, herby cheese straight from their fridge – leaving money in their box if needs must.

There’s also the Torteval Fort Grey soft blue cheese which you can pick up in local shops, the weekly Sausmarez Manor Farmers Market and in restaurants across the rock.

It’s long been an integral part of Guernsey culture. In the past, bakers would allow residents to cook the dish in their ovens overnight, to be eaten at breakfast. This was common practice until the 1920s, especially on Sundays when the ovens were not used. Bean Jar is still popular across local cafes and restaurants. It’s also a staple in many households over winter.

GUERNSEY ORMERS

Ormering is a long standing tradition in Guernsey.

In fact, the traditional Guernsey ormer casserole recipe has been around since at least 1673. If you don’t fancy a casserole, some suggest dipping thin slices into a bowl of steaming stock, or simply frying them gently. Unlike other Guernsey foodie favourites, ormers have strict rules and regulations surrounding how and when they can be plucked and consumed, and you won’t readily find them at Island eateries. Ormers can only be collected on a handful of dates between January and April.

GUERNSEY FUDGE

Guernsey Gourmet Foods produce local fudge that’s become a staple gift or airport souvenir for many years. The company still use the same method that has been around for decades. The fudge is made in a traditional copper bowl over a raw flame, before being poured hot into trays and left to cool awaiting hand cutting and weighing for specific bars, bags or chunks. If you’re craving something sweet, nothing beats this island favourite.

ROCQUETTE CIDER Guernsey’s proximity to Normandy means we share a penchant for cider. The island has long been intrinsically linked with apple growing and has an accomplished cider heritage. As early as the 16th Century, production thrived and cider was exported in large quantities to England from across the Channel Islands. The majority of the old farms in Guernsey have their own cider presses on site, but most are no longer in use.

Thankfully, the Meller Family Farm make and bottle Rocquette cider in the Fauxquets Valley. Crisp, cold and thirst quenching, Rocquette cider is top of the list for any family bbq at our house and it’s quickly into the hands of ‘mainlanders’ when they come to visit.

The Guernsey cow first became popular in English dairies in the late 18th century, and it’s easy to see why. Her reputation as a unique producer of rich yellow coloured milk and butter soon gave her the title Golden Guernsey. Approximately 25% of butter produced by the Guernsey Dairy is exported into the UK and the continent where it is sold to Waitrose, Michelin-starred restaurants, ice-cream-makers and chocolatiers as a premium branded product. On average, a dairy cow will produce approximately 5,500 litres of milk per year, although some cows in island herds now regularly produce in excess of 7,000 litres.

There’s nothing quite like a crab sandwich on a sunny day in Guernsey. You can find them at various kiosks across the island (I’d recommend Port Soif). If you want a lighter option, go for a crab salad. Just as delicious and not quite as naughty.

Most locals and visitors alike will agree that Herm is a magical place. The east coast beaches, Shell and Belvoir, are where Guernsey childhood memories are made. The soft white sand and crystal clear blue water are famous around the world. The beach cafés are open in the summer months for snacks and sandwiches… and the famous Herm Ice Cream. Rich, sweet and thick, Herm ice cream is more than just yummy. It’s addictive. I’ve been known to have two during one day trip… oops.

As the only gin distillery on Guernsey, Blue Bottle is becoming somewhat of a household name. Inspired by the beauty found even in a fly’s wings, Blue Bottle aims to celebrate the exquisite in the ordinary. Its creator Matt was inspired whilst completing a research project at Cambridge on – you’ve guessed it – blue bottle flies. As he peered down his microscope, Matt was struck by the exceptional beauty and intricate detail in something as small as a flies’ wing. His gin aims to capture the beauty of the island in a single bottle. With gorse flowers, cubeb peppers and nutmeg, the unusual combination of floral notes and spice is supported by menthol sweetness. Juniper also plays a vital role in the unique taste.

The local fruit bread pronounced Guernsey ‘gosh’ is an island wide treasure. You can have it with butter (the preferred method), jam or cheese. You can pick up a loaf or slice in local shops, cafes and bakeries. Senners bakery makes some of the best Gâche on the island I reckon. Pick some up for afternoon tea or if you’re visiting, take a loaf home with you. However, it’s also not complicated to make, so why not give it a go yourself this autumn? There are lots of recipes online.

In most cafes, kiosks and even restaurants or hotels, you can find a decent Guernsey cream tea (check out Mint Brasserie, Rousse Kiosk, Old Government House and the Farmhouse). Freshly baked scones, sweet jam and thick Guernsey cream, what could be more indulgent?

As you travel around Guernsey, you’ll see boxes and small stalls set up at the roadside. Known locally as “hedge veg”, you can buy a range of local produce usually grown or made by the owners of the homes that the stalls sit outside.

You can buy fruit and vegetables, flowers and eggs, homemade jams and chutneys. As the only Channel Island left holding the flag for Hedge Veg, we should be proud of our trusting community for upholding the tradition! What’s more, the produce tastes pretty incredible.

The Society’s CEO Colin Macleod gives a reading to pupils at Le Rondin Primary School from the book he wrote, Meet Hammerhead and Captain StickyPants, which follows the adventures of his two sons, Lewis and Harris. Sales from the book have raised £10,000 for Variety, the Children’s Charity of Jersey and Help a Guernsey Child.

The Society was proud to support the inaugural Pride event in Guernsey. This important and celebrated event was held to promote equality and acceptance irrespective of sexual orientation, gender identity, religious belief, race, gender or disability.

We are proud to make a real difference to the communities we serve.

Here are just a few of the projects we’ve been involved in.

Working with the St Peter Port Christmas Lights charity and Guernsey Post, The Society helped to raise funds to improve the infrastructure of the lights and provide new displays for Church Square, Market Square, Smith Street, Fountain Street, the High Street and Le Pollet. During the campaign, shoppers were able to purchase a bulb, receiving a pin badge which recognised their donation.

The Society demonstrated its commitment to local suppliers at Guernsey’s popular outdoor International Food Festival, supported by celebrity chef Jean-Christophe Novelli. The new community van proved to be the perfect stage to promote local food products including cheese, sausages, pate and berries.

If you were lucky enough to jet off to the Balearic island of Ibiza this year, you’ll know all about its reputation as being the party capital of the world. From blissful bays to legendary superclubs, it’s no surprise that it attracted a recordbreaking 7.1 million visitors in 2016.

But, what if some of the things that make Ibiza such an iconic hotspot could inspire a special event in the Channel Islands?

This was the question asked by Russell Meakin, creator of House Events and owner of My Ibiza – one of the world’s biggest websites for clubs and events in Ibiza.

Island Girl Abroad Utila, an island paradise just off the coast of Honduras is known as one of the cheapest places in the world to learn how to dive, and as the 2nd largest reef in the world after the Australian Great Barrier Reef, also one of the most varied. With crystal clear waters and an array of marine life, it’s no wonder people flock here to delve into the depths of the ocean and discover its secrets. You could be forgiven for thinking you’d left Central America all together, with the strong Caribbean vibes and the local language being Creole, it has a totally different feel to the mainland of Honduras. The streets are narrow and bustling with life, tuk tuks and motorbikes zoom past as locals sit on their porches chatting and laughing. Local street vendors sell their goods on the side of the streets: freshly cut mangos, pineapple and every other fruit you can imagine, all sliced and ready to eat. The vibe is relaxed and the pace is slow, like everywhere else in Central America and possibly even more so, no one here is in a hurry. Wooden houses, shops and restaurants line the coastline, with jetties precariously dipping into the water and catching the sea breeze. The gentle splashing of the water against the docks is a beautiful sound and the creaks and groans of the jetties are soothing to listen to whilst sitting and enjoying the view. Restaurants and bars line the main port of entry, this is where you’ll find most of the activity and some great spots to eat whilst looking out onto the water, wander a little further out of town however, and slowly the buildings become more dispersed and open up to beautiful remote beaches.

The main island itself boasts beautiful clean beaches and if you rent a dirt bike or a 4 wheel drive buggy you can explore the coastline a little further over to the other side of the island. Here you’ll be rewarded with empty beaches lined with palm trees, although due to lack of roads, much of the island is impenetrable wilderness so a little knowledge on your route before you go is suggested. Alternatively you can take the most popular option which is by sea. A boat trip to one of the many little bays nearby is often a popular choice. These are, for the most part, totally deserted and the colour of the water is dreamlike, a turquoise blue so crystal clear you have to see it to believe it. Spending the day sitting on a beautiful beach looking out onto the calm ocean is a perfect way to spend the day, it’s even possible to spot manta rays leaping into the air and shoals of fish darting across the surface of the water. Snorkelling these waters will open up a whole new world and give you a glimpse into why Utila is known for being such a great dive spot. With over 60 different dive sites, the island and surrounding waters offer endless opportunities to explore, including more advanced cave and wreck dives.

The open water diving courses are a fantastic way to begin your exploration into the underwater world.

Over the span of a few days you can study the necessary theory and practice your new knowledge in the sea with qualified diving instructors. For those of you who already do so, you’ll understand the feeling that comes with your first dive. After the initial nerves have left and your descent into the depths begins, your breathing slows and you begin to enjoy the feeling of weightlessness and being immersed in a magical underwater world. The bubbles drift above your head to the surface as you exhale and settle on the soft white sand beneath you before signalling the ok to the rest of the dive group and heading off in search of mystical underwater creatures. Alongside many different species of fish it’s possible to spot whale sharks, although it could just be a fleeting glance of the magnificent creatures as they swim off into the depths, Utila is a hot spot for these giants and another reason it’s so popular for divers to visit. Although catching a glimpse of them isn’t guaranteed, if you visit during the right season your chances are much higher.

There is also a dedicated research centre here dedicated their study of them due to their frequent sightings.

Dolphins also enjoy the warm waters and can be spotted on many occasions whilst out on the dive boats.

Jumping in and swimming with these amazing creatures is an absolute joy, playful and friendly and in their natural habitat, it is the best way to see these animals and a wonderful experience. Surrounded by shoals of fish, walls of coral and the darkening depths below you, diving really is everything I was told it would be,

2017 GUERNSEY AIR DISPLAY MARKS 60TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN MEMORIAL FLIGHT

2017 marks the 60th anniversary of the Royal Air Force (RAF) Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF). It commemorates all those who lost their lives serving in the RAF, or its predecessor the Royal Flying Corps, in all conflicts from 1914 to the present day and its motto is “Lest We Forget” – three words that say it all.

The iconic sounds and sights of the BBMF will once again be at the forefront of the 2017 Guernsey Air Display on Thursday 14th September 2017 from 10.45am to 1.15pm above Castle Cornet and St Peter Port. The Lancaster, Hurricane and Spitfire will officially open the Air Display at 11am and the theme of World War II historic planes will continue with The City of Exeter single seater Spitfire making her display debut in Guernsey’s annual Air Display.

Spectators this year can also look forward to a duo display formation of Strikemaster Jets; the gravity defying expert skills of Rich Goodwin and his red and white Pitts S2S aircraft; the (almost) silent elegance and gracefulness of the AeroSPARX motorised gliders and the split second precision flying of the Wildcat Aerobatic Display Team.

Also making their debut at this year’s Guernsey Air Display will be the Royal Navy Parachute Display Team (colloquially known as the “Raiders”); Corinne Dennis who personally built her own Twirlybatics Pitts Special aircraft and was for many years the only female in advanced level aerobatic competitions in the UK and The Global Stars who are no strangers to the Aerobatic Championships circuit and are led by founder Mark Jefferies. The Global Stars are a truly

international display team, performing predominantly in Bahrain, Asia and China. 2017 has seen The Global Stars display at a large number of UK events, including Old Warden, Chatsworth, Broadstairs and Blackpool and now Guernsey in September.

2017 and 2018 are special years for the Guernsey Air Display with the BBMF’s 60th anniversary this year and the celebrations and legacy of the Royal Air Force’s centenary in 2018. Each year the Guernsey Air Display faces considerable challenges in securing sufficient funding to literally “get the Air Display up into the skies” and both 2017 and 2018 are no exceptions.

“Genuine appreciation needs to be given to the private sector companies who are Consortium Members of the Guernsey Air Display along with States of Guernsey Culture & Heritage Department who provide a small grant but more financial support is desperately needed” said Michael Perrett, Guardian of the Guernsey Air Display Foundation. “2017 and 2018 are unique years for both the BBMF and the RAF and I urge all companies in Guernsey to pledge their support to the Guernsey Air Display to ensure that this hugely popular annual event does not disappear from our skies for good.”

3 tbsp olive oil 3-4 handfuls curly kale, washed thoroughly, with the thick vein removed and chopped into bitesized pieces 25g pecan halves 80g pomegranate seeds Sea salt & pepper, to season For the maple dressing: 1/4 cup maple syrup 1/8 cup extra virgin olive oil

method: 1) Preheat oven to 190 degrees C. Place the Brussels Sprouts in a roasting tin. Dress with the olive oil and season with salt & pepper. Roast for approximately 25 minutes, turning halfway through the cooking time.

4) Whizz the hazelnuts in a food processor until smooth and creamy. The time this takes will depend upon the power of your food processor and may require patience (mine took approx 10 minutes). It's important to pause every minute or so to scrape down the sides of the bowl and also to prevent the motor from overheating.

5) Add the maple syrup, cacao, vanilla and salt and whizz to thoroughly combine. Add water, a little at a time and whizz until the mixture reaches the desired consistency. The quantity indicated gives a smooth, thick paste that lends itself well to spreading but if you want it to be even more spreadable, simply increase the amount of water. Pour into an airtight jar and refrigerate.

Nominations for this year’s prestigious Community Awards are now open.

The Guernsey Community Foundation is encouraging Islanders to nominate charities, business and individuals for this year’s Community Awards, which takes place on 31 October.

The event, now in its seventh year, recognises and celebrates Guernsey’s vibrant voluntary sector. But it’s not only about raising awareness – each of the winners receive a cash prize too.

ART FOR GUERNSEY INTERVIEW WITH DAVID UMMELS FOUNDER ART FOR GUERNSEY David tell us a little about yourself and how you are enjoying life in Guernsey?

I came to settle on the island two years ago with my family, having been a passionate art and antiques collector for almost 20 years . I very much like my life here in Guernsey. The island is beautiful and has a lot to offer to young families in terms of lifestyle and quality of life. I have lived and conducted business in several parts of the world, but so far I have never experienced the feeling of being in such a special place. I feel at home in Guernsey.

What inspired you to set up Art for Guernsey?

I decided to start Art for Guernsey because I felt so enthused by the level of courtesy and honesty that I witness here on a daily basis. It makes me feel like I want to pull my weight and contribute as well. I find it so refreshing! That is why I came up with the idea of Art for Guernsey. I thought that I could capitalise on my relationships in the art world and invite once a year an internationally renowned artist to visit Guernsey, be inspired by it and produce related artworks that would be displayed during a week-long exhibition at the Market Square. Guernsey has a long history of being a welcoming harbour for artists, and I really like the legacy element of this project. This initiative is very much about creating an opportunity for islanders to discover high quality art for free. It is also about supporting the community by donating all the resources generated by the exhibition to local charities and/or run charitable projects ourselves.

Finally, on a more personal note, I wanted to do something charitable, but also fun, and so far so good.

What community projects have you managed to achieve so far?

Last year we organised our first exhibition featuring the work of Eugen Gorean, a very talented watercolorist from Moldova. Eugen visited the island several times and produced some wonderful paintings inspired by Guernsey. The show was a great success as we had approximately 900 visitors and sold 24 paintings, raising more than £23,000 to be used for local charitable causes. During the exhibition, Eugen and I also intensively engaged with the community; running a free workshop on Herm Island and visiting the Princess Elizabeth Hospital, Blanchelande College and the Guernsey Cheshire Home to try to

bring art where it is most needed. With its donations, Art for Guernsey decided to support Arts For Impact, the Guernsey Teenage Cancer Trust, the Eisteddfod Society, the Performing Arts Department of the College of Further Education, the Guernsey Cheshire Home and the Princess Elizabeth Hospital. We also run different charitable projects directly as we are keen to create more art and educational opportunities for the local community. In particular, this year we are launching a scholarship program for art students and an art lending program that will be freely accessible to any Guernsey schools.

This year you have introduced, talented Artist, Olivia Kemp, to our island to complete locally inspired ‘Art for Guernsey’ – What style work and how many pieces can we expect to see from Olivia?

It is sometimes difficult to talk about art and artists because obviously it involves a certain amount of personal subjectivity. But taking that into consideration, I would simply say that I have been collecting fine arts for a long time, and Olivia is one of the most talented drawers that I have ever seen, Old Masters included. She is that good. She is positively obsessed by art. Just a little anecdote - when she came over this spring to prepare for the exhibition, I was driving her around the island from hedge veg (she was keen to draw compost!) to bunker and even in my car she kept drawing. The fact that we were moving around on Guernsey roads didn't seem to affect her. I was terrified as I realised that she had been working on that particular piece for two or three days and that just a slight mistake may spoil it, but she kept drawing regardless of the traffic. In terms of her style, I would say that her drawings are concerned with notions of wilderness and tensions between the natural and man made, which obviously fits Guernsey perfectly. Like Eugen, Olivia is only 26, but her journey has been spectacular. She studied painting at Winchester School of Art and went on to study MA Drawing at Wimbledon College of Art where she was awarded the Jealous Prize. Olivia also completed a postgraduate program at the Royal Drawing School.

She has exhibited at various galleries including the Saatchi Gallery, the National Gallery, Christies New York and also Hyde Park Corner Tube Station as part of “The Art Below” project. She has artworks in the collections of both the V&A Museum and the University of the Arts London and privately held by many British and international fine art collectors.

OLIVIA KEMP ART FOR GUERNSEY EXHIBITION

SEP 27 – OCT 7 INNER MARKET STREET – THE MARKET PLACE

When will Olivia Kemp be ready to showcase her work for Art for Guernsey and how can the community show their support?

Olivia will exhibit her work at the Market Square, from 27th September (private view) until 7th October. We will have about 40 artworks on show. Obviously there will be quite a few drawings inspired by Guernsey as part of her residency on the island, but also artworks that she produced before her collaboration with us.

Last year the public really appreciated seeing "both sides" as it gives a better sense of what the artist is all about. All the artworks will be for sale and, as last year, all the proceeds (except the artist's share) will be donated or used for charitable projects.

The exhibition will be free and the best way for the community to show its support is to come and see it. That makes us happy. I have to say that I am overwhelmed on a daily basis by all the positive comments on our Facebook page, which really keep us going! The business community has also showed its support for our initiative and we are very fortunate to have prominent partners with us on this journey (BullionRock, Carey Olsen, Guernsey Community Foundation, Lancaster, and Sydney Charles) You have ambitious charitable projects in the pipeline: Art scholarships and Art in School Program. Can you tell us more?

In conjunction with our next exhibition, Art for Guernsey will be awarding two scholarships (tuition fee, accommodation and travel costs) that will allow two art students selected from the 12 shortlisted finalists of the Sovereign Art Foundation School Art Prize Competition to attend a two week long “Foundation Masterclass” intensive art course for young artists aged 16-19. It will take place in the summer of 2018 at the Royal Drawing School (RDS) in London. This is a unique opportunity for talented young Guernsey artists to hone skills, build a portfolio and experience art school first hand. Our jury will be composed of Olivia Kemp (our artist in residence and ex alumni of the RDS), James Freeman, managing director of the James Freeman Gallery in London, and Nikki Gardham, teacher at the Royal Drawing School. This could be a life changing opportunity for the two students.

We are also launching "Art in School" in September, which is a project I feel very excited about. Art for Guernsey has identified a certain number of fine art collectors on the island who have a lot of goodwill.

They are positively inclined to help the community if asked, so Art for Guernsey presented them with the opportunity to lend artworks of museum quality to any Guernsey school willing to use them to develop more project based learning opportunities and develop cross disciplinary lateral thinking. All the art will be fully insured by Art for Guernsey. The response from the schools has been very enthusiastic so far. We will provide more details on the project alongside the Education Department in due course.

The States of Guernsey has released the latest property prices bulletin which we have reviewed and summarised below.

Conor provides effective financial solutions and insurance products, emphasising a personal service and building long-standing relationships.

The mixed adjusted average Local Market property price is £417,962 which is slightly lower than the first quarter of 2017 at £432,341. When compared to the same quarter of 2016 (£434,571) it shows a drop of 3.8% year on year.

The number of transactions however has come out positive with an increase of 33 sales compared to the first quarter of 2017. For the same period last year, the number of transactions was almost identical at 198.

On the Open Market, the median average sale price was £799,000 which is 6.8% less than Q1 2017. In the second quarter we saw a total of 14 transactions compared to 6 in quarter one (2017) and 6 in quarter 2 of 2016.

It is good to see the number of transactions increasing and suggests that vendors are accepting more reasonable offers on their properties, as we settle into a more buyer- focused market. A large number of our clients are taking offers on their properties under the advertised price and in turn are having offers accepted on properties below asking price.

Lending has also seen some positives, we have welcomed the first 5 completions from The Family Building Society at just over £1.1m to the market.

Other lenders’ criteria remain broadly similar although underwriters are being more selective. Selfemployed applicants continue to find it difficult to get finance. Most banks require between two and three years business accounts along with the most recent two or three years tax assessments. Many people (including the self-employed) do not submit their tax returns promptly at the beginning of each year which means their incomes are not assessed until later in the year or even the following year, therefore the most recent tax assessments and business accounts can be out of sync.

Roof design may not cross your mind when you’re thinking of renovating or building a new home, but recent advancements in materials and clever architecture mean it’s now a serious design consideration. There’s no need to do what convention dictates – you can have aesthetics, extra space in your home (without extra footprint) and make environmental and power saving gains and it’s all down to a single surface area – the roof.

David de la Mare, Managing Director and Chartered Architect from Guernsey business, DLM Architects helped shed some light on this fascinating area of design and how it fits in with his design ethos. Whilst “from a practical perspective the roof is water-proofing for the house,

that roof works. There’s more space and cost-efficient ways to adapt the existing house, from a design and energy point of view”.

If you want to create a particular look for your home, your roof can have a dramatic impact on overall aesthetics. The good news for Guernsey homeowners is that there’s no material that’s off limits. The mild climate here gives license to be creative and create a home far from the norm.

In David’s experience, he’s worked with a huge variety of materials including zinc, copper, coated materials, wood cladding and thatch and tries to incorporate reclaimed materials or materials available already on the site to minimise cost and create a visual feature out of the roof to fit the home. “Every project is unique and

there are so many other opportunities”.

David goes on to explain the benefits to be gained not only through aesthetics, but also by providing environmental benefits, such as using the roof to collect solar energy or to provide thermal benefits. “Whilst the typical roof structure in Guernsey is the pitched tiled roof, there are a lot of benefits with the flat roof.” Some of these benefits include minimising overhang and therefore shadow on your own grounds or your neighbours’ and using less materials because the surface area is smaller, thereby reducing cost and also minimising heat loss and gain.

Getting roof design right can also impact how you use your space and David has some views on the opportunities offered by using your roof to gain views, create a terraced area, or just create more usable space in your home without having to suffer from the limitations of building into attic space, a common downside of the conventional pitched roof.

It’s clear that the design of the roof really impacts the way our homes perform. As David suggests, “it’s akin to the saying that your body loses 80% of its heat through

There is one new material, yet to be released locally, which he hasn’t yet used.

Tesla, the company renowned for creating new affordable energy-saving solutions for the everyday, such as solar power panels and storage batteries, not to mention one of the world’s best-selling electric cars, has created a new solar roof slate. The key benefit of the slate is that it incorporates the solar capturing properties in the material, without the need for panels, making the pricing comparable to normal slate, as David puts it simply, “you’re buying one product, but it’s doing two things”.

“There are a lot of ways to harness everything we already have in terms of thermal gains and ventilation and how that can affect how our homes operate just through the way we design our homes, rather than adding more cost. This is something we focus on as a practice. Every house is unique to its own site, setting and environment and should be designed as such, so as to maximise its potential in its site”.

WAVING HELLO TO A NEW WAY OF AIR TRAVEL If there is one topic guaranteed to cause a debate then it’s inter-island travel. GsyLife caught up with the newest entrant to the market - Waves.

When entrepreneur Nick Magliocchetti moved to Guernsey last year, he quickly established that one of the biggest challenges islanders were facing was a lack of choice with air travel and the absence of an airline which truly meet the needs of the community.

‘But using technology, we can exceed those requirements and at the same time, use that technology to make booking and check in as quick and easy as possible.’

Club Waves, uses the same KYC approach which financial institutions follow before they take on a client.

All passengers will need to complete a pre-flight identify authentication and security check which will be securely kept for future flights.

‘I spoke to hundreds of people in the first few months of being in Guernsey from taxi drivers and waiters through to friends and business people and asked them what frustrated them about island life. The same thing kept coming up time and time again and so I saw the opportunity and started bringing together a team which could deliver a solution,’ he said.

The solution is Waves, a technology led, on demand air taxi service, which during September will start operations using two Cessna Grand Caravans. 2-CREW arrived on island in August and is being used for training, medevacs and freight with 2-SOON launching the passenger service. Its brand new aircraft, to be named 2-WAVE, will come from Wichita in America and will also be used for passenger travel between Guernsey and Jersey. Waves plans to apply for licences to expand its operation to France and the UK in 2018 with demand and when more aircraft arrive.

Waves' aim is to revolutionise inter-island travel by having a flat rate of £65 one way to and from Jersey, 20kgs of baggage included and the ability to carry pets, sports equipment and freight. In his pre-Guernsey life Nick has used technology to transform failing business and so it comes as no surprise that technology will be evident in every step of the customer experience. It’s even created its own tech-based system to ensure that pre-flight security will be industry leading.

‘We are regulated in the same way as every other commercial airline and in order to get our air

‘Because the security checks are done in advance, when passengers come to board, we will simply verify their identity using smartphone technology. Every flight will have two pilots and so one will do the pre-boarding security check while the other readies the plane for departure and it means we can have minimal turnaround time and a 15 minute check in,’ he said.

The technology being used by Waves is being developed in-house and will also allow the company to communicate quickly and easily with passengers.

‘If there is fog then we can let passengers know not to come up so that they can either stay at home or the office or enjoy a bit more holiday time. We believe the investment we have made in technology will ensure we have unrivalled security and unparalleled customer service.’

A customer experience manager will join the Waves team in September and they will then look at adding benefits to Club Waves including a club lounge in their St Peter Port office, where the team is based. It now employs 20 people including two in Jersey, where the company will also have a base.

experience Waves is stipulating are not readily available in the islands, it has decided to continue investing in the islands by launching the Waves training academy, which will see its first student intake join next year.

‘Not everyone has the finances to fulfil their passion for flying and so we want to hear from anyone who is interested in becoming a commercial pilot with Waves.

It’s possible they will never have been in a cockpit before or that they have done multiple flights, it doesn’t matter, they just need a passion and a commitment to helping Waves realise its ambitions of serving islanders,’ said Mr Bisson.

Simon Crook, who is based in Guernsey and is a senior training captain at Virgin Atlantic Airways, is Waves’ aviation advisor.

‘Waves have demonstrated again that they are a very forward-thinking and innovative airline prepared to set up their own academy. We are already in contact with major training providers to ensure we recruit the right people and offer first class training to our future pilots.

We will try and use as much of island resources as we can thereby supporting the local economy and providing an exciting and rewarding career for local people,’ said Captain Crook.

Recognising the growing interest islanders have in Waves, the company is launching a new website, have on-going active social media channels, have introduced a regular newsletter and been involved in a number of community events including the West and North Shows and the Harbour Carnival.

NEW DIRECTOR OF FUND SERVICES AT INTERTRUST Intertrust in Guernsey has appointed a new director to further grow the funds business.

Andrew Maiden has been appointed as a Director in the fund services team in Guernsey and will have a specific focus on business development for the funds team in the island and managing the firm’s existing client relationships.

Mr Maiden joins Intertrust with more than 20 years’ experience in the offshore fund administration industry and has expertise in dealing with private equity, infrastructure, real estate and listed funds.

Intertrust’s fund services offering in Guernsey has been growing significantly since the firm’s acquisition of Elian in 2016 and Mr Maiden is responsible for ensuring Intertrust's global ambitions for fund services are realised in key locations such as Guernsey.

INTERTRUST STRENGTHENS FUNDS TEAM WITH NEW HIRES TIME FOR CHANGE FOR PR ACCOUNT MANAGER a former journalist and PR account manager has joined Dragon’s Denwinning watch company, Slappie, as its marketing and development manager.

Kim Bougourd, who joins the firm from local PR consultancy, Liquid, will focus on raising the brand profile, through traditional and social media, as well as helping Slappie grow its global footprint.

‘Slappie is an exciting company with huge potential for growth, both within the UK market and overseas. In June this year, local businessman Scott Carre bought the company and began operating it from premises in Glategny Esplanade, St Peter Port. Since the acquisition, Mr Carre has received requests from retailers wanting to stock the watch range, including international airlines and world-renowned department stores.

Intertrust has appointed a new head of funds in the Channel Islands, and an associate director to further develop its funds offering across the islands.

Michael Johnson joins the company as head of funds in the Channel Islands and will be responsible for developing the funds strategy across Jersey and Guernsey, with a particular focus on private equity, debt and real estate fund administration.

Mr Johnson was previously head of fund services at BNP Paribas and also worked in London where he specialised in the oversight of outsourced investment mandates for Swiss Re Asset Management.

He is a chartered accountant and committee member of the Jersey Funds Association and will apply his experience to building on Intertrust’s position as a leader in fund services globally.

Lucy Silvestri has joined the funds team as associate director and brings over 10 years of experience in fund administration.

Ms Silvestri will be responsible for three teams and their associated portfolios, as well as taking on client directorships. She has a particular specialism in achieving operational efficiencies, with several years' experience in varying structures and products within private equity.

Intertrust’s funds team in the Channel Islands is part of the firm’s global provision and the local team has multi-jurisdictional clients and responsibilities.

Although the reality is that banking is quite a pressured industry, I try not to take myself too seriously. As a result, I think my team finds me to be very open and accessible. I do set high expectations of myself, though, and consequently I have high expectations of my team.

No one likes making mistakes and when you do, you never appreciate that these errors can become nuggets of wisdom for the future.

Provided you learn from your experience, mistakes are part of the learning processes. My best mistake (if you can say that) was losing my limited but hard-earned savings from numerous jobs during my gap year back packing. I was an enthusiastic novice trader, long on theory but short on experience, during the Dot Com bubble. A useful early lesson that it’s not always about being book smart, real world experience is important.

How does your company contribute to island life?

As an island what should we do more of?

Being a part of the community is hugely important to us at Butterfield.

We are particularly proud to support the Pride of Guernsey awards, sponsoring the Young Achiever of the Year category, and also this year’s MUG Bermuda Shorts week, raising money for sun cream dispensers in schools. Staff are always keen to get involved in charitable events, such as the Les Bourgs Hospice 30 Bays in 30 Days and Saffery Champness Rotary Walk and we have monthly dress-down days for a chosen charity.

We are all very fortunate to live on such a beautiful island and I think often it is easy to under appreciate how lucky we are. With this is mind, we should all consider ourselves ambassadors for the island and promote a positive message about Guernsey and all it has to offer whenever we can.

I always try to put myself in my team’s shoes. I want them to enjoy their work as I do, and for it to be as fulfilling and rewarding as possible

Invest with Sam Food for thought The inspiration for this article on “scrumptious” comes from a somewhat alien situation I found myself in following a sunny Sunday swim in August - enjoying tucking into a packet of Emily’s Veg Crisps (not so much crisps as crunchy French beans, sugar snap peas and black edamame to be specific).

As someone whose favourite course is almost always dessert, I cannot say I’d previously considered a handful of dried greens worthy of the accolade associated with being awarded the title “snack”.

However, I was surprised at how much I actually enjoyed this healthier alternative.

Now, I wouldn’t be telling the complete story if I didn’t also disclose the fact that I had also just devoured a honeycomb Magnum (props to Unilever – another of our core holdings – for this ingenuity); however the fact is that general attitudes towards snacks are changing.

Keen to substantiate this and provide some statistical context, I conducted a quick poll and taste test around our office – asking my colleagues to choose between longstanding classic, Walkers (salt and vinegar flavour) and the aforementioned healthier alternative; Emily’s Veg Crisps.

Whilst the experiment was anything but perfect, falling foul of many of the criteria statisticians normally require (sample size and thus statistical relevance is a bugbear that immediately springs to mind – not to mention the cries of foul-play from my co-workers who felt that ready salted would have been a fairer comparison!)

I was surprised by the results.

SAM CORBET, Ravenscroft Investment Management Of the 38 people polled, 53% said they preferred the healthier snack – this number would have been higher had I not attempted to skew the results by playing on Ravenscroft’s (unbeknown to me) love of vinegar. The sceptics amongst you may argue that we are a strange bunch and that these results would not be representative of the wider population; however the latest breakdown of revenue from core Huntress Global Blue Chip Holding, PepsiCo, would suggest that the taste preferences recorded among my peers are actually quite archetypal.

Most people will probably associate PepsiCo with being the main competitor to Coke in the fizzy cola market - or possibly the Company behind this year’s highly controversial advertising campaign featuring Kendall Jenner. People may be less aware that PepsiCo is actually a global producer of some of the world’s most recognised snacks – Walkers Crisps, Doritos and Cheetos are popular names among its extensive range.

However, as the Company began to recognise that consumers were becoming more health conscious and that their tastes were changing to reflect this, it began to refocus its portfolio - either through acquisition (as with Tropicana in 1998) or through revamping conventional product lines in order to offer healthier alternatives (such as Walkers Baked Stars – which the Company claims contain 70% less fat than your average potato crisp).

PepsiCo now defines its brands into three categories: Fun for You, Better for You, Good for You. Interestingly, almost half of PepsiCo’s annual revenues are now derived from sales of what it refers to as its “Guilt Free Product” ranges i.e. brands which fall under the Better and Good for You ranges – not a million miles away from our own findings.

As thematic investors, PepsiCo’s ability to recognise a long-term trend and adapt its strategy accordingly, in order to ensure the Company remains relevant, is something that chimes with our ethos. This is an example of strong management; one of the key qualities we look for in our underlying companies.

The continued presence of high quality management should steer the Company in a direction that allows it to flourish regardless of any demographic changes it faces along its journey - many of which are often beyond a company’s immediate control.

BUSINESS TRAVELLERS GIVEN SECOND OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE THEIR SAY ON INTER-ISLAND TRAVEL TIMES Blue Islands is re-launching its business travellers’ inter-island schedule timing consultation survey after an inconclusive number of responses from the initial launch.

Despite a seven-week period when people could respond, just 94 did so, including 10 who were not Channel Island based. These responses will count toward the next result.

Rob Veron, Blue Islands CEO, says: “we really appreciate the time our customers took to complete the survey, however the sample just wasn’t large enough to base a change of schedule on. We can only make changes based on feedback representative of the inter-island business travel market, as such we are again seeking the business community’s views as to when it wants these services to depart.

“Blue Islands is a market-led company, and we will respond to what our customers are telling us they want. We want to underpin our other data with real customer input to ensure every possible option has been reviewed for our inter-island timings.”

In March the airline boosted inter-island capacity by 48% at peak morning times in each direction on Tuesday, Wednesday and

Thursday, when the business customers have historically chosen to travel. Mr Veron added: “Adding a larger 68-seat ATR 72 aircraft was in response to the demand for peak services from business travellers.

Further to this capacity enhancement, we want to operate schedules our business customers find most convenient to maximise their working day and naturally we are very happy to alter the current timings if enough customers tell us they want to fly at different times.

“Blue Islands is committed to the interisland route, and through consultations like these we can make it more convenient than ever to travel between Guernsey and Jersey.”

Chief Executive of the Jersey Chamber of Commerce, Gillian Martindale-Parsons, said: “inter-island connectivity is a vital link for businesses with existing offices in both islands and those companies looking to develop leads. In order to ensure our providers are meeting the demands of commerce, it’s important commerce provide an insight into their travel requirements and surveys such as this will help provide that knowledge.”

Guernsey Chamber of Commerce director John O’Neill said the group endorsed creating tailored and effective Channel Island air links. He said Chamber had received some 700 responses to its own recent Islands Infrastructure Survey.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to take part in this survey as Chamber has already identified the need for closer links between the islands’ business communities. It would provide valuable insight if that level of interest was replicated in determining what type of air links are needed between Jersey and Guernsey.”

CLARUS RISK MD TO SPEAK AT EUROPEAN RISK MANAGEMENT EVENT Max Hilton, Managing Director of Clarus Risk, a Guernsey- based niche FinTech provider of high quality, customisable risk solutions, has been invited to present at the Federation of European Risk Management Associations (FERMA) 2017 Forum. The event takes place on 15 – 18 October in Monte Carlo.

Mr Hilton will be joining a prestigious line up of industry experts who will be making presentations and running workshops over a wide range of risk-related topics over the four days. He will be leading one of three master-classes, entitled Beyond the spreadsheet - additional methods of analysing and communicating risk.

The master-class will consider how the methods used by one group of risk professionals can be applicable for risk managers in other sectors, looking at how a company’s various risk reporting challenges can be integrated but still provide the requisite metrics to distinct audiences. The presentation will cover the basis for the different requirements of risk audiences and the tools and methods to produce the risk metrics, as well as the reporting technology.

The master-classes are a new innovation for the annual forum which is the biggest pan-European risk management event of the year and they form part of FERMA’s commitment to providing a comprehensive education and training programme.

C5 ALLIANCE AWARDS BURSARY TO LADIES’ COLLEGE STUDENT C5 Alliance has awarded their fifth bursary to Ladies’ College student Jessica Salisbury.

Miss Salisbury, 18, will be attending Durham University in September to study Natural Sciences following her A-Level exam results announced today. After completing a BSC in Natural Science Miss Salisbury hopes to go on to study towards an MSci in Maths and Chemistry.

C5 Alliance is committed to investing in local students who have an interest in pursuing a career in the technology sector.

Offering a no-strings-attached bursary helps to encourage students to develop their knowledge in their chosen area and comprises of a financial grant as well as the opportunity to undertake summer work with the company.

Miss Salisbury first became interested in coding and technology when she volunteered to help run a charity website.

Exploring coding further allowed her to compete in the University of Southampton National Cipher Challenge and Student Robotics Challenge, where she programmed the team’s robot.

The National Cipher Challenge requires entrants to decipher cryptic messages using code, entrants in the Student Robotics have to programme an autonomous robot.

Both challenges encourage participants to develop knowledge of coding and help them to progress their skills.

Head of project delivery at C5 Alliance Simon Tidd congratulated Jessica on her exam results and wished her well with her university studies.

“The C5 Alliance bursary is one of the only Guernsey bursaries available to support students wishing to study a science degree. The bursary will help me to start my career in the technology sector and I am very much looking forward to working at C5 next summer,” said Miss Salisbury.

Miss Salisbury studied Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry at A Level and Classical Greek at AS and was The Ladies’ College Scholar of the Year 2016-2017. She has a keen interest in programming and dynamics which combines physics and mechanics with computing and software to solve a variety of problems.

Applications for the next bursary, for students beginning their studies in September 2017 are accepted until January 2018.

INTERTRUST MAKES SENIOR PROMOTION IN ITS GLOBAL RISK AND COMPLIANCE TEAM intertrust has promoted Kristian Walton to Deputy Global Head of Risk and Compliance. Mr Walton is based in Jersey and has direct oversight of Jersey, Guernsey, the UK, Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore and China. He also has a wider remit across Intertrust's 30 other jurisdictions as he is a member of the senior risk and compliance management team.

Mr Walton is responsible for applying stringent levels of regulatory compliance across the group including meeting the latest international standards, the use and maintenance of risk assessments and compliance with data protection and information security management legislation.

A Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Securities & Investment (CISI), he joined Intertrust, then Elian, in 2014 after working in the private banking industry for several years.

CREDIT SUISSE GUERNSEY ANNOUNCES FOUR SENIOR APPOINTMENTS CREDIT SUISSE has appointed four senior members of staff in Guernsey.

Simon Welch is the bank’s new head of legal in Guernsey, while Stephen Falla has joined as head of IT. Heading up the first line of defence support is Chris Trudgeon, with Paul Banbury moving to Guernsey from Credit Suisse in the UK to take up the position of head of credit risk.

‘Credit Suisse is back in a period of rebuilding and growth. It’s an exciting time for the bank, and with Stephen, Chris, Paul and Simon on board, we have a bright future,’ said Credit Suisse Channel Islands’ CEO Paul Annegarn.

‘All four of these executives have a huge amount of experience in their fields and will be a great asset to the bank.’

Mr Falla, who has long history in managing IT environments and projects as well as a deep understanding of information security, will hold a dual role. He will act as IT country head for Guernsey and IT support head for International Wealth Management UK IT. In a previous position, Mr Falla was instrumental in establishing the infrastructure necessary to connect Guernsey to the SWIFT international communications network.

Mr Welch, who worked at Credit Suisse in Guernsey between 2009 and 2013, has returned to the island to take up the post after heading up the bank’s Business Delivery Centre legal and compliance programme across three continents.

A qualified barrister, solicitor and chartered company secretary, Mr Welch will manage all legal aspects for the bank.

He will also provide legal advice in dealing with regulatory relationships, as well as managing external counsel engagement.

Mr Banbury is the new head of credit risk in Guernsey, after three-and-a-half years as a senior credit risk officer at Credit Suisse in the UK. He has previously held the position of specialist credit manager at Coutts & Co. ‘The head of credit risk management is a diverse position, ranging from approving new lending requests to advising relationship managers on credit related matters, to optimising credit risk processes and procedures,’ said Mr Banbury.
