SAFEGUARDING AT ROSSALL
The safety and well-being of all our pupils at Rossall School is our highest priority. Our business is to know everyone as an individual and to provide a secure and caring environment so that every pupil can learn in safety. We expect respect, good manners and fair play to be shown by everyone so that every pupil can develop to their full potential and feel positive about themselves as an individual. All pupils should care for and support each other.
Rossall prides itself on its culture of open and effective communication between staff and pupils.
Our aims are to:
a) create an environment in our School which is safe and secure for all pupils
b) encourage our pupils to establish satisfying relationships with their families, with peers and with other adults
c) encourage children to develop a sense of autonomy and independence
d) work with parents to build their understanding of and commitment to the welfare of all pupils
WHO TO TURN TO
All pupils know that there are adults to whom they can turn if they are worried, including Houseparents, Deputy Houseparents, the Safeguarding Team, the Headmaster, Senior Deputy Heads, Deputy Heads, as well as their Heads of Year, Form Tutors, Class Teachers and the Medical Staff.
All pupils have access to a telephone helpline, enabling them to call for support in private.
Every child is given a care card which contains guidance on where to turn for advice, including confidential helplines and web addresses for external specialists.
Our notice boards around school, the Medical Centre and all Houses display advice on where pupils can seek help, e.g. Child Line and the Independent Person.
We provide leadership training to our School Captains and their team of Monitors which specifically covers the importance of offering support and assistance to younger and vulnerable pupils.

Child abuse can be of a sexual, emotional or physical nature; it can also be the result of neglect. Concerns or suspicions may arise through either direct allegation, direct observation or by changes in attitude or behaviour. All members of the teaching and support staff receive Safeguarding training on an annual basis.
The school Safeguarding and Child Protection policy is updated annually and is available on the School website.
SENIOR SCHOOL RULES
Rossall School recognises that effective teaching and learning can only take place in a caring, well-ordered environment. At Rossall our behaviour policy is applied fairly and consistently across all pupils regardless of background or seniority. Good discipline is important for the growth, welfare and development of our pupils. In this regard, our pupils are given clear expectations, effective pastoral support and opportunities to build good social relationships. High standards of behaviour, manners and discipline are expected of all pupils at all times. Pupils are expected to behave in such a way as to be a credit to themselves and to the School.
Rossall bases its code of behaviour on four general principles:
• We believe in giving our best effort in all things, at all times and fulfilling our commitments
• We believe in trying to be a positive influence in what we do, and encouraging others to do the same
• We believe in being courteous, considerate, compassionate and respectful to others
• We believe in taking pride in ourselves, in our ideals and our environment.

BEHAVIOUR AND EXPECTATIONS
Particular attention is drawn to the following points:
• Rossall encourages all of of its pupils to show respect for each other.
• All pupils should be aware that the School expects high standards of appearance at all times. Pupils must travel to and from School in uniform unless they have permission to wear alternative clothing.
• All pupils are expected to know and display basic ‘good manners’. Staff will make clear their expectations in this respect.

• We expect all pupils to be ready to learn and to participate in School games and activities as per the timetable.
• All conduct that is anti-social, serves to bring discredit or disrepute to the School, whether on the premises or elsewhere, is deemed a breach of School Rules.
• Disruption in lessons is not acceptable and will be dealt with firmly.
• The use of mobile phones during during the school day is prohibited for Year 7 - 10 and pupils who bring their phones into school will be expected to place them in a Yondr pouch for the duration of the day; students in Year 11 and the Sixth Form are able to use their mobile phones in designated places only. Earphones and earpods should not be worn during the school day.
• Any unauthorised items, such as mobile phones, will be confiscated as a disciplinary penalty under the School’s behaviour policy. Any confiscated items will be taken to the Academic Secretary’s Office.
• Public displays of intimacy and sexual activity between pupils when in the care of the School will be liable for a sanction.
• Bullying is not acceptable in any form and pupils are educated in the School’s anti-bullying policy and must embrace it.
• We will impose sanctions on any pupil who misuses technology to bully, harass or abuse another in line with our anti-bullying policy. Similarly, taking images or videos of staff or pupils or distributing any such material without consent will be dealt with in line with the School’s behaviour policy.
• We impose sanctions on those who access pornography or sext, with greater sanctions for those who choose to disseminate images and material. The latter of these is illegal, and the police will be involved in such instances.
• Rossall strongly disapproves of the abuse of alcohol, drugs, legal highs, vaping juice and tobacco. The school will act accordingly, and pupils should expect to be dealt with in accordance with the school rules.
• Vandalism and theft will be dealt, with either, likely to lead to permanent exclusion.
These points are supported by a system of rewards and, where necessary, appropriate sanctions. Sanctions will be at a level that reflects the severity of the offence, the possible influence on others and the maturity of the pupil.
All pupils should read and be familiar with these School Rules and the Behaviour Policy.

GENERAL EXPECTATIONS
• If pupils require medical support during the day, they should get permission from their teacher and then go to the Medical Centre. Pupils must then follow the directions given by the medical staff. Pupils should not have medication in school without the authorisation of the Houseparent, Tutor or medical staff. Whenever possible, absence from lessons should be avoided and visits to the Medical Centre should be limited to break and lunchtime.
• No food, crockery or cutlery may be removed from the Dining Hall. Food and drink may not be consumed whilst walking around the campus.
• Pupils must attend all lessons, games, activities, meals and Chapel - truancy will be dealt with in line with the School’s behaviour policy
• During Supervised Study and Prep time there should be no movement around the campus. Pupils are not allowed to return to their houses during the school day except for break and at lunchtime.
• House rules regarding visitors must be abided by.
• Cars, motorbikes and bicycles cannot be brought to school without the permission of the Deputy Head (Senior School and Sixth Form). Written parental permission is required and separate rules apply. Younger pupils wishing to cycle to school must seek permission from their Head of Year.
• Ball games or any ‘loud behaviour’ are not allowed in the Square. Sunbathing is allowed directly outside the House but not during school hours.
• All electrical equipment must have been officially tested and marked as such. Any form of cooking or heating equipment is banned in bedrooms and studies for safety reasons.
• Entry into the Swimming Pool, Gymnasium and use of other sports equipment is not allowed without a member of staff supervising the activity.

DISCIPLINE
• The following places are out of bounds – the shore, all private houses and gardens, the staff Common Room, the Kitchens, the Maintenance Department and Yard, the Pavilion and Grounds Department. All other school buildings, when not in normal use, and the formal lawns for games are also out of bounds.
• During break and lunch time pupils are permitted in supervised areas only - house day rooms, social spaces and the Library.
• Pupils must respect all Fire and Health and Safety precautions and be familiar with the routines designed to promote their safety.
• Pupils must not use or possess any weapons (without due authority) or fireworks.
• Pupils must not engage in any form of gambling.
• Pupils must not buy or sell goods, or borrow without permission.
• Pupils must not indulge in relationships of an intensely physical nature. Public displays of affection are not permitted.
• Damage to property belonging to the School or another person, should be reported immediately.
• Pupils must not smoke or vape, or have possession of related items.
• Pupils must not consume or possess any illegal substances/ materials.
• Pupils must not consume or possess alcohol without due authority.
• During the school week, boarders are not permitted to leave the campus. Exceptional leave on other nights may be granted by Houseparents.
House rules are published in the House Boarding Handbook for tutors and pupils.

EXPECTATIONS IN THE CLASSROOM
• Punctuality is required as a matter of courtesy.
• Pupils must arrive with all textbooks, exercise books, sufficiently charged learning devices and other equipment that is relevant and expected.
• Pupils must listen carefully to instructions.
• All tasks set by the teacher must be completed in an orderly and appropriate way. The instructions for the activity must always be followed carefully.
• The school will not tolerate any interruption of the teacher.
• Follow common courtesy and listen to each other in class.
• Complete all homework by the given date. No late work will be accepted unless an acceptable explanation has been given to the teacher or where previous arrangements have been made.
• Swearing will not be tolerated.
• Keep all classrooms tidy.
• Note that no eating, drinking (other than water) or chewing gum will be allowed in class.
• Mobile phones are not allowed to be used in class.
• Computers, ipads and any other electronic devices should only be used when instructed to do so by the teacher.
• Arrive and leave the class dressed as per the school uniform code.

DIGITAL DEVICES
Desktops, laptops and iPads commissioned to run the software appropriate to the School’s network are fully networked both to the Internet and the School’s own Intranet. There is an array of software and hardware devices in the system to prevent misuse. All activity on the network is monitored for the security of the pupils and of the network itself.
Pupils are expected to follow the ICT Acceptable Use policy, which lists the rules of conduct and consequences for inappropriate use of devices or the Network. Full details and a copy of the contract for network use are sent to all parents prior to their child’s entry into the School and whenever updates are issued.
MOBILE PHONES
The use of mobile phones during the school day is prohibited for Year 7 - 10 and pupils who bring their phones into school will be expected to place them in a Yondr pouch for the duration of the day; students in Year 11 and the Sixth Form are able to use their mobile phones in designated places only. Earphones and earpods should not be worn during the school day.
The Education Act 2011 allows teachers to confiscate and search mobile phones when they are being used to cause a disturbance or otherwise contravene the School’s behaviour policy. If a search of the phone is required it will be handed to the Senior Deputy Head/Designated Safeguarding Lead to conduct the search. If a mobile phone has been confiscated, it can be collected from the Academic Secretary’s office. Confiscation will incur a sanction in line with the School’s behaviour policy.
Pupils do not need to bring a mobile phone to school. Should they choose to do so Tthe School will not accept any liability for the loss of mobile phones. As with other personal items, loss or damage to personal electronic devices should be covered by parental household insurance policies.

ANTI-BULLYING AT ROSSALL
All reasonable steps should be taken to ensure that, so far as it is possible, every pupil feels safe and happy at School and feels supported and protected at all times. Rossall expects all members of the School community to uphold this code.
• Every pupil at Rossall has the right to enjoy their learning and leisure time free from intimidation.
• Rossall pupils will not tolerate unkind actions or remarks, even when these were not intended to cause hurt.
• Rossall pupils understand that to stand by when someone else is being bullied, is to support bullying.
• If you are being bullied or you know of someone who is being bullied, you should report this to a member of staff or a responsible senior pupil.
• Bullying will always be taken seriously by staff and pupils must play their part in creating an environment free of intimidation at Rossall.

PUPIL VOICE AT ROSSALL
We place huge emphasis on opportunities for all pupils to share their opinions and ideas for how to make Rossall a welcoming and inclusive community and the very best learning environment.
Pupils can get involved by joining one of a number of pupil committees, by sharing their views with representatives of these committees, by completing the termly surveys or by speaking to their Head of Year or any of the Deputy Heads or the Headmaster.
We strongly encourage pupils to bring forward issues that they would like to raise in assemblies and we seek to ensure that our diverse student body is effectively represented and catered for.

WHAT TO DO IF YOU’RE NOT FEELING WELL
During the school day, all pupils have access to the Medical centre should they need to see one of the School Nurses or feel so unwell as to be unable to continue in their lessons. As detailed above, pupils must ask permission from the teacher of the lesson they are due to attend before making their way to the Medical centre. Whenever possible, absence from lessons should be avoided, and visits to the Medical Centre should be limited to break and lunchtime.
The nursing team will assess a pupil before determining the most appropriate course of action.
Should a day pupil need to be sent home, the nursing team will contact the parents directly.
REPORTING AN ABSENCE
Please be reminded that pupils should be in School before the start of morning registration at 8.15am each morning. For day pupils, any absence on the day should be reported by emailing attendance@rossall.org.uk before the start of the School day.
Every day in school is important but, should there be a reason for an unavoidable absence, all such requests should be directed to the Head of Year for authorisation. Any absence request for longer than one day will be referred to the Senior Deputy Head for consideration.
Term Dates are available on our website a year in advance. Parents should check these when booking boarder flights and family holidays.
