ANNUAL MUSIC COMPETITION PRIZEWINNERS 2017 - 2023 Supporting outstanding young musicians from the UK and around the world www.rosl.org.uk roslarts

For over 70 years, ROSL has had a proud and distinguished history of supporting outstanding young musicians and visual artists from the UK and internationally. The ROSL Annual Music Competition is the centrepiece of ROSL’s year-round programme of events and support for young musicians. Over £70,000 was awarded in prizes in the 2023 competition to solo performers and chamber ensembles. The awarding of prizes marks the beginning of a relationship between ROSL and its competition alumni.

In its 72nd year, ROSL has promoted or supported prizewinners concerts in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as well as other major festivals and venues throughout the UK including Buxton, Lichfield, Lake District and Brighton.

The juries for the competition are made up of significant international figures from the classical music world, both performing and management. Many jury members were ROSL prizewinners themselves.

ROSL International Music Scholarships supported UK study visits and performance tours in 2022 for young musicians from New Zealand in partnership with the World’s Edge Festival. ROSL ARTS currently supports the National Youth Orchestra of Kenya, providing both online and in person tutor sessions as the orchestra recovers post-COVID.

AMC 2023

EMILE SOUVAGIE clarinet Emile Souvagie is the principal clarinettist of Opera Ballet Flanders and a member of the Verbier Festival Orchestra. Last season he was an academist with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam. In that capacity he worked together with conductors including Klaus Mäkelä, Maxim Emelyamchev, Barbara Hannigan, Daniel Harding and Sir John Eliot Gardiner.

Emile studied clarinet and early music with Benjamin Dieltjens at the Brussels Royal Conservatory and undertook further studies with Hermann Stefánsson at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm (SE) and with Ralph Manno at the Cologne University of Music (D).

He has played as guest principal with the Belgian National Orchestra and as a substitute with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra,

GOLD MEDAL WINNER

Brussel Philharmonic and the Orchestre des ChampsElysées. With the Firgun Ensemble (clarinet and string quartet) he won first prizes at the Storioni Willem Twee Concours 2018 (NL) and Supernova 2022 (BE).

He frequently plays with the RCO Camerata and is a member of the Cortenbach Trio and Duo Tokár.

In 2022 Belgian classical radio station Klara named him one of ‘De Twintigers’. He performed as soloist with the Freixenet Orchestra conducted by Jaime Martin during the ‘Encuentro de Música y Academia de Santander’ in Spain and has played in masterclasses with Yehuda Gilad, Charles Neidich, Calogero Palermo, Olivier Patey, Martin Fröst, Harri Mäkki and Philippe Berrod. He is also a ‘NextGeneration Artist’ with I Solisti (The Belgian Wind Ensemble Antwerp).

ANNABEL KENNEDY mezzo soprano Annabel Kennedy is a mezzo-soprano from Devon.

She is part of the Royal College of Music’s International Opera Studio as a Siow-Furniss Scholar supported by the Sir Gordon Palmer Scholarship, under the tutelage of Amanda Roocroft and Caroline Dowdle.

In addition, Annabel is grateful to be supported by the Josephine Baker Trust, The Drake Calleja Trust, The Munster Trust Award and the Sybil Tutton Opera Awards. Annabel is a Samling Artist, a Britten Pears Young Artist for 2022-2023 and a Glyndebourne Jerwood Young Artist for 2023. As a Jerwood Artist, Annabel covered for Peter Hall’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream as well as singing in the chorus for L’elisir d’amore, Dialogues des Carmélites, Semele and The Rake’s Progress.

Recent awards include the 2023 Singers Prize in the Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition, First Prize in the Lies Askonas Competition, 1st Prize in the Brooks Van Der Pump English Song Competition, Audience Prize at the Somerset Song Prize, Second Prize in the Hurn Court Opera Singer of the Year Competition, First Prize in the RCM Concerto Competition, Second Prize in the Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards Competition at Wigmore Hall, First Prize for the AESS Dame Patricia Routledge English Song Competition and First Prize for the AESS Courtney Kenny Award English Song Competition.

BOCHENG WANG piano Concert pianist Bocheng Wang has performed with London Mozart Players, Dulwich Symphony and the Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra.

Solo recitals across Europe in venues include Wigmore Hall, Kings Place, Fazioli Hall, Warsaw Philharmonic Chamber Music Hall, and Pereda Hall.

As an artist of the Kirckman Concert Society and The Keyboard Charitable Trust in London Bocheng has performed in festivals including PianoTexas (USA), Ferrara (Italy), Oxford, Dartington (UK) and International Musical Artistry Goslar (Germany), as well as in masterclasses with renowned musicians including Richard Goode, Arie Vardi, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Dmitri Alexeev and Steven Osborne.

Competition highlights include the Keyboard Prize in the Royal Over-Seas League Music Competition, second prize at the Windsor International Piano Competition, first and grand prize at the Croydon Performing Arts Festival Concerto Competition, third prize at the ‘Young Pianist of the North’ International Piano competition, and semifinalist prize at the Santander International Piano Competition.

Bocheng studied at the Purcell School for Young Musicians, and later attained a Bachelor’s Degree with First Class Honours at the Royal Academy of Music under Prof. Christopher Elton. He is currently finishing his Master’s Degree and will continue studying an Advanced Diploma with Prof. Ian Fountain at the Royal Academy of Music. Bocheng’s studies are generously supported by the Drake Calleja Trust and Sir Elton John.

GERARD FLOTATS cello Gerard Flotats is a Catalan cellist born in 2001. He started his studies in his hometown with Xavier Roig and Peter Thiemann and moved to the UK to study with Richard May at Wells Cathedral School with a scholarship in 2016. He is currently at the Royal Academy of Music with Hannah Roberts as an ABRSM scholar. He also studies Baroque cello with Andrew Skidmore and Chamber music with John Myerscough.

Gerard won the Royal Over-Seas League Strings competition 2023 and the Duo Prize and Craxton Prize at the RAM. He has been invited to festivals around Europe including IMS Prussia Cove, Mendelssohn on Mull with the Doric Quartet, Schiermonnikoog, Santander Encuentro and Hatfield Chamber Music Festival.

During the 2022/2023 season, Gerard performed a Beethoven Cycle, playing all the works by the composer for cello and piano across the UK. Gerard has performed in masterclass with Mischa Maisky, Steven Isserlis, Gary Hofmann, Steven Doane and Frans Helmerson.

He is an active member of various orchestras and was principal cellist of the European Union Youth Orchestra in 2022 and has led the RAM and JONDE orchestras. He is often invited to play with the Spanish National Orchestra ‘ONE’.

Gerard receives support from Help Musicians and the Albert Cooper Trust. He currently plays on a ‘Francesco Rugeri’ cello from 1689, generously loaned from the Royal Academy of Music.

FIBONACCI QUARTET string quartet Winners of the 2023 ROSL Annual Music Competition String Ensembles Prize, The Fibonacci Quartet was founded in 2019 at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.

The quartet started working under the tutelage of Krysia Osostowicz (leader of the Brodsky Quartet) and is currently coached and mentored by Ursula Smith. In addition to their studies in London, they were accepted to the Dutch String Quartet Academy (NSKA) and ProQuartet masterclasses in Paris, and at the International Institute of Chamber Music in Madrid, part of the Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía with Günter Pichler.

Other competition successes include, prizes at the Beethoven Competition for Young Musicians in London, St James Chamber Music Prize and International “Triomphe de l’Art” Chamber Music Competition in Brussels. They were also awarded the audience prize at the Festival Jong Talent Schiermonnikoog (the Netherlands), which led to their recent concert at the International Chamber Music Festival Schiermonnikoog. The quartet has performed live on BBC Radio 3 “InTune“ as well as Podium Witteman, a classical music programme broadcast on Dutch television.

The Fibonacci Quartet is generously supported by Talent Unlimited and has been invited to be a part of “Le Dimore del Quartetto” network in Italy. They are also grateful for the support they have received through the Adami grants for artistic development.

LUMAS WINDS wind quintet Lumas Winds are a dynamic, young chamber ensemble based in London made up of recent graduates from the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music. They are committed ambassadors for wind chamber music and the rich variety of repertoire that it offers.

Their main focus is to perform, promote and make a case for works not in the canon but deserve to be so. This is highlighted in the six hidden gems that will feature on their debut album being released in 2023 with Champs Hill Records. The disc brings together wind quintet music from every decade from 1960 to 2010 and includes three world premiere recordings.

The group recently won the 2023 Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition Mixed Ensembles Prize and were recipients of a Tunnell Trust award, earning them a tour of Scottish music clubs in 2024. In the near future Lumas will be a part of the 2023 Winchester Chamber Music Festival which will include a performance of Francis Poulenc’s Sextet alongside pianist and composer Huw Watkins.

EMILY HOH collaborative piano Swedish-Taiwanese pianist Emily Hoh is the recipient of the 2023 Royal Over-Seas League (ROSL) Award for Collaborative Pianists. She graduated with distinction from the Royal College of Music in 2022, studying an MPerf in collaborative piano under Simon Lepper, Roger Vignoles, and Kathron Sturrock.

She accompanied several prize-winners of vocal competitions and was awarded the pianist prizes at the RCM’s 2022 Brooks van der Pump English Song and Lieder competitions. In May 2023 she was awarded the first place pianist prize Hope Gosse Award at the inaugural Ashburnham English Song competition with mezzo-soprano Annabel Kennedy, who won the singers first prize.

Emily is a Samling Artist and has received coaching with Sir Mark Elder and Jonathan Ware. She has taken part in collaborative piano masterclasses with Lydia Brown (The Juilliard School) on American Song and with Mark Padmore on Dichterliebe as part of the Lewes Song Festival. She looks forward to joining as a Britten Pears Young Artist for the 2023-2024 season on the English Song Course, led by coaches including Julius Drake, Gweneth Ann Rand, and Allan Clayton.

Emily is the accompanist-in-residence at Westminster School and accompanies regularly at the Royal College of Music.

AMC 2022

JACK HANCHER guitar Jack Hancher is a rising star of the classical guitar. In 2022, he won the Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition Gold Medal, which was preceded in 2021 by a tour of several European Guitar Festivals as a EuroStrings Artist. In 2020, Jack won a string of awards at various guitar competitions, including First Prize at both the Zagreb Guitar Festival Competition and the Plovdiv GuitArt Festival Competition and in 2021, he was awarded Second Prize at the Altamira International Guitar Competition.

In 2017, he was accepted onto the International Guitar Foundation (IGF) Young Artists Platform and performed at the IGF London Guitar Festival at Kings Place, London in October that year.

GOLD MEDAL WINNER

In 2018, Jack performed at Wigmore Hall, London, playing his arrangements of Albeniz’s piano music and later that year, performed at the Cheltenham Contemporary Arts Festival with music by Arnold, Britten and Dowland.

Jack completed his Master's in Performance at the Royal College of Music (RCM), London in 2018 where he studied with Gary Ryan and Chris Stell and won the RCM Guitar Award 2014 while still in his second year as an undergraduate. Jack has performed across Europe in venues including the Großer Ehrbar Saal, Vienna and the Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi, Turin.

Jack is an Augustine Strings Artist.

DANIEL SCOTT recorder Daniel Scott is a recorder and flute player with a passion for both early and contemporary music.

“An exciting and versatile young recorder player, committed to pushing the boundaries of his instrument” (Erik Bosgraaf, 2021), Daniel is pursuing his own musical voice in myriad fields from renaissance consort music to contemporary music theatre productions.

Daniel graduated from his Masters in recorder at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2022, for which he was awarded a scholarship from The Countess of Munster Musical Trust. He studied with Erik Bosgraaf, Jorge Isaac, and Michael Form.

Previously, he graduated from the Royal College of Music London with a First-Class Joint Honours Bachelor’s degree in Flute and Recorder with

María Martínez Ayerza and Katie Bedford. He is a member of the Royal Wind Music, a renaissance recorder ensemble with whom he has played concerts across Europe. Together with the Royal Wind Music he recorded a CD of Spanish renaissance music in August 2022 inspired by the magnificent Seville Cathedral.

He is also collaborating on a contemporary interdisciplinary performance called ‘The Eternal Feminine,’ which won the ‘cross-over prize’ at Amsterdam’s Grachten Festival and is supported by Amsterdam Fonds voor de Kunst.

Daniel was awarded first prize at the Royal OverSeas League Solo Wind, Brass & Percussion competition 2022 and was a finalist for the Moeck/SRP recorder competition 2021.

JAMES ATKINSON baritone James Atkinson is a graduate of the Royal College of Music Opera Studio, where he studied with Alison Wells. He is the winner of the Royal OverSeas League Singers’ Prize 2022, the Maureen Lehane Vocal Awards 2018 and the Somerset Song Prize 2019.

In Spring 2022 James made his debuts with Welsh National Opera as Masetto in Don Giovanni, and with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra singing Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast. With the RCM Opera Studio, his roles included Ramiro (L’heure espagnole), Buonafede (Il mondo della luna), Sam (Trouble in Tahiti) and Blazes (The Lighthouse).

Other roles include Lysander in The Enchanted Island (British Youth Opera), Boots in Der Rosenkavalier (Garsington Opera), Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas and

Papageno in Die Zauberflöte (Hurn Court Opera).

James is in high demand as recitalist and has performed at Oxford Lieder, the Ludlow English Song Weekend, the Lewes Festival of Song, the London Song Festival, the Aldeburgh Festival, and the North Norfolk Music Festival. His September 2021 recital with Sholto Kynoch at the Lammermuir Festival was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 as a live lunchtime concert.

In the coming season, James makes debuts at Wigmore Hall, the Gower Festival and the Little Missenden Festival, and he makes return appearances at Oxford Lieder and the North Norfolk Music Festival.

GEORGE TODICA piano Romanian concert pianist George Todica completed an Artist Diploma degree from the Royal College of Music in 2019 studying with Norma Fisher, and a Masters of Music at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2017, studying with Norman Beedie and Jonathan Plowright.

He has peformed at halls and festivals including Trento Philharmonic Hall, the Mozarteum Concert Hall, the Dôme de Pontoise in France, St. Martin-inthe-fields, Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge, Buxton Festival and King’s Lynn Festival.

George made his Wigmore Hall debut in October 2018 as a Tillett Trust Young Artist, and his competition success include the ROSL Annual Music Competition Keyboard Prize, first prizes at the Norah Sande Award in England, ‘Stefano Marizza’ Piano Competition Italy, the Moray Piano Competition in Scotland, the Llangollen International Eisteddfod in Wales, 2nd prize at the International Piano Campus Competition in France, and 3rd Prize at the International Piano Competition Istanbul in 2020.

A keen chamber musician, George regularly performs with soprano Charlotte Hoather, with whom he has recorded 4 CD albums, and as part of the Chloe Piano Trio with violinist Maria Gîlicel and cellist Jobine Siekman. The Trio was recently awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Henderson Chamber Ensemble Award.

PADDINGTON TRIO piano trio Winners of the 2022 ROSL Annual Music Competition String Ensembles Prize, 2020 Chamber Prize in the St James's Chamber Music Competition and finalists in the Ivan Sutton Award 2021, the Paddington Trio came together in 2020 at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The trio has found international success at the Tallinn International Piano Chamber Music Competition, winning 2nd prize as well as the Special Prize for Best Interpretation for an Estonian work. They have quickly emerged as a unique and versatile ensemble and have been invited to perform around the UK and Europe.

The trio is committed to thoughtfully curated programming and are passionate exponents of contemporary music, working extensively with the Guildhall New Music Society.

As well as benefiting from regular tuition with Levon Chilingirian, Richard Lester and Caroline Palmer, they have received coaching from David Waterman, Andrew Watkinson, Ronan O’Hora, David Dolan, Tomas Djupsjöbacka, Paavali Jumppanen, Marko Ylönen and Krysia Osostowicz.

The Paddington Trio studied on the Advanced Chamber Music Program at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. and are currently Chamber Music Fellows at the Royal Northern College of Music

CONNAUGHT BRASS brass quintet 2022 ROSL Annual Music Competition Mixed Ensemble winners and winners of the inaugural Philip Jones International Brass Ensemble Competition 2019. Vibrant, spirited and bold, Connaught Brass place emphasis on their friendship with one another to showcase individual musical personalities within a unique collective sound.

The group also previously won the Worshipful Company of Musicians Brass Ensemble Prize (2018). More recently, they have become artists of both the Tillett Trust and City Music Foundation, and gained a place on the prestigious Britten Pears Chamber Music Residency 2021/22. Previous notable engagements include a tour of Switzerland in 2021, recitals at Ferrandou Musique (France) in 2018, 2019 and 2021, St James’ Piccadilly, Investec International Music Festival and the Great Birmingham BrassFest.

Connaught Brass also take pride in undertaking and building their outreach work. Their ambition is to explore and share the broadest range of repertoire with as wide an audience as possible, bringing brass chamber music to the forefront of today’s musical world.

RYAN CORBETT accordion Born in Glasgow, Ryan Corbett is a classical accordionist who has been described as “one of Scotland’s most exciting young musicians” (The Scotsman).

This year he graduated from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, where he will commence his postgraduate studies after summer.

Previously, he studied at the Music School of Douglas Academy and St Mary’s Music School. Ryan began playing accordion aged eleven and was selftaught until he started learning with Djordje Gajic at the age of fourteen. His repertoire ranges from Baroque keyboard works, to original contemporary compositions for accordion.

GOLD MEDAL WINNER

Ryan was awarded the Keyboard Prize, first prize and Gold Medal at the Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition, first prize at the Bromsgrove International Musicians’ competition and prizes at international accordion competitions in Italy, Germany, and China. Ryan is a Tillet Debut scheme artist, Munster Trust Recital Scheme artist and the first accordionist to be part of the prestigious BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist scheme since its launch in 1999.

AMC 2021

MATTHIAS BALZAT cello New Zealand born Matthias Balzat has established himself as an international soloist and chamber musician. His competitive successes include prizes in the ROSL Annual Music Competition, SieghardtRometsch Instrumental Concerto Competition, International Wallace Cello Competition and New Zealand National Concerto Competition, as well as 2nd Prize in the Gisborne International Music Competition. As a soloist, Matthias has performed with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, Sinfonieorchester Opus.125, Sinfonietta Köln, St. Matthews Chamber Orchestra, Auckland Chamber Orchestra, Robert Schumann Hochschulorchester, Opus Orchestra, and NZ National Youth Orchestra amongst others. .

He has performed in festivals including Aspen, Villa Pennisi in Musica, Classiche Forme, Miesbach Kammermusikfestival, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Lake District Summer Music Festival, Martinborough Music Festival and Wilma and Friends.

Matthias Balzat is currently enrolled in the prestigious Konzertexamen degree at the Robert Schumann Hochschule für Musik in Düsseldorf under renowned soloist Pieter Wispelwey, where he also completed his Master of Music. James Tennant was his previous teacher in New Zealand, with whom he completed his Bachelor of Music at the age of 17 at Waikato University. Matthias Balzat is also a member of Ares Piano Trio.

AMC 2021

MARIE SATO flute Born in 2000, Marie Sato is a flautist from London.

She was the winner of the Wind and Brass category at the 2021 Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition. In 2018, she won the RPS-Duet Prize for Young Instrumentalists, and was a woodwind category finalist in both the 2016 and 2018 BBC Young Musician competitions.

She is currently studying with Yuki Koyama and Petri Alanko at the Sibelius Academy, University of the Arts Helsinki, for her master’s degree, where her studies are being supported by a Finland Scholarship from the Finnish Ministry of Education and Culture. She was also part of the London Philharmonic Orchestra Foyle Future Firsts Professional Development Programme 2022/23.

Since 2023, she has been on trial for 2nd flute with the London Symphony Orchestra and has recently been appointed co-principal flute of Jyväskylä Sinfonia in Finland. In 2022, she graduated from the Royal College of Music with First Class Honours, where she studied with Adam Walker, Stewart McIlwham and Gitte Marcusson. During her time at RCM, she was a Douglas and Hilda Simmonds Scholar, and won the RCM All Flutes Plus Flute Prize.

Marie has given solo recitals at venues across the UK including the Elgar Room (Royal Albert Hall), St. George’s Bristol and at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Marie is also a keen chamber musician, and has played the Nielsen and Ligeti wind quintets on In Tune, BBC Radio 3.

MILLY FORREST soprano Lyric soprano Milly Forrest studied at the Royal Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music.

In December 2020, Milly was awarded the FerrierLoveday song prize in the Kathleen Ferrier singing competition and in June she gave a recital at the Wigmore Hall with her accompanist Hamish Brown as part of their Sunday afternoon recital series.

On the operatic stage, Milly has sung Iris in Semele (Shanghai Symphony Orchestra), Barbarina (cover) in Le Nozze di Figaro (ENO) and Miranda in The Enchanted Island (British Youth Opera). During June and July of this year she performed for Garsington Opera playing Alice in Le Comte Ory

by Rossini.

As a keen recitalist, Milly sang a selection of Britten's folk song arrangements with Roger Vignoles in May at Snape Maltings and in September she took part in a project with Oxford Lieder recording songs by Cheryl Frances-Hoad. She has performed at Ronnie Scott’s, Cadogan Hall and has recently recorded at Abbey Road studios with London Grammar and Emeli Sande.

She is a Samling Young Artist, a Britten Pears Young Artist and an Opera Prelude Young Artist.

AMC 2021

HAMISH BROWN collaborative piano Hamish Brown is a London-based pianist, whose varied and wide-ranging work includes performances as a vocal accompanist, chamber musician, orchestral pianist and soloist. He is currently the Gilbert & Eileen Edgar and Anthony Saltmarsh Collaborative Piano Fellow at the Royal College of Music.

From his many collaborations with singers, Hamish has won the pianist prizes at the ROSL Annual Music Competition, Kathleen Ferrier Awards, Mozart Singing Competition and Somerset Song Prize, and has been a finalist at the Wigmore Hall/Independent Opera International Song Competition and Copenhagen Lied-Duo Competition. He is a former Oxford Lieder Young Artist and Britten Pears Young Artist.

In 2021, Hamish performed his debut Wigmore Hall recital with his duo partner, soprano Milly Forrest.

He has performed at Cadogan Hall, Elgar Room (Royal Albert Hall), King’s Place, St John’s, Smith Square and V&A Museum, and at festivals including Oxford Lieder, Aldeburgh, Leeds Lieder, Internationaal Lied Festival Zeist and Heidelberger Frühling, as well as live on BBC Radio 3.

Hamish read music at the University of Manchester, continuing with postgraduate studies under Simon Lepper and Roger Vignoles at the Royal College of Music, graduating with Distinction.

M-Z DUO saxophone & accordion duo Winners of the Royal Over-Seas League Annual Music Competition’s Mixed Ensemble Prize in 2021, the Mikeleiz-Zucchi Duo’s repertoire spans everything from reimagined traditional works to modern repertoire and improvisation, all vividly rendered by the unique combination of saxophone and accordion. Made up of Canadian saxophonist David Zucchi and Spanish accordionist Iñigo Mikeleiz-Berrade, the duo was formed in the spirit of mutual curiosity and open-mindedness.

After their debut concert at the Vale de Cambra Classical Music Festival (Portugal) in 2019, the duo has performed across the UK and Europe, including appearances at Wigmore Hall, Rosengarten Museum (Lucerne), St George's Bristol,

Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Lewes Music, the Purley Classics series, and the Daylight Music series (Union Chapel, London).

Individually, Iñigo and David have distinguished themselves as award-winning interpreters of classical, improvised, contemporary, and experimental music, and have performed at some of the UK’s most prestigious venues. They are graduates of the Royal College of Music and the Royal Academy of Music.
