SITE SELECTION:

In madhya pradesh as per the mental health report 2016-17 ,the weighted prevalence of Mental Morbidity in adults was 13.9% (95% Confidence Interval 13.7-14.1), This prevalence is higher than the national prevalence of mental morbidity.

Accordingly, an estimated 66 million adults are in need of mental health care services in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

The burden of any psychoactive substance use was 36.6%, with tobacco use disorder being 34.9% and alcohol use disorder being 10.3%. The prevalence of psychoactive substance use is three fold higher than the national prevalence.

The number of mental health professionals in the state was 0.2 per one lakh population.

However, the proportion of psychiatrist was 0.05 per lakh population.

There were no rehabilitation workers or special education teachers available under the public healthspectrum.

The Government of Madhya Pradesh, (Department of Urban Development and Forest) has allocated 05 acres of land at Bhopal near Kotra Sultanabad, which includes 2.67 acres of non-green area and remaining 2.33 acres as green area for the purpose of establishment of the institute.

The descri ption of the khasra belongs to 05 acres of land which is allocated for project at Kotra Sultanabad .

The project site study revealed that on the proposed site already some old building structures exist at the front end of the land area, also some Jugghi type hutments are there at the back end side of the project site.

The old buildings house the Government offices. At the project site there are tracts of open land area with scattered trees around, the maximum number of trees are mostly at the border/ fence & the predominant species being the eucalyptus.

It was also observed that at the back end there is a park and close observation revels that beyond that park there is a canopy of densely populated trees on a forest land. Both the park and the dense canopy are outside the project site.

The flow of the site is based on the activities and spatial programme the flow of the design will be centered around the main healing asylum.The circulation of site plays a large role as well.

The division of the project site is divided into to main phases , phase 1 and phase 2. The site id divided in such a way to accomdate the 2 phases and the spatial progeamme for these phases.

The project is divided into to 4 main zones - the outpatient ward ,the inpatient ward, the the therapy ward and the rooms.

The building is arranged in such away that the wards have easy access to one another.

The Therapy courtyard pays an essential role in the treatment of the patients.

There are 2 main entrences to the out-patient ward and the in-patient ward, these entrances have easy access to the side entrance.

The projrct tries to cfeate best possible atmosphere fot the patients and the residents .

This is done by ensuring ample light throughout the building, easy access to nature and outdoor spaces, transparent wards with easy overviews, and a well thought layout.

The ring encircles the courtyard - a space of a different nature, in several levels, where all users, visitors and staff share and can move freely within. The spaces that the courtyard, the circle and the other building volumes embrace, relate to hospital’s other green clusters and their courtyards, here only with the difference that it connects with the surrounding landscape, rather than with its own enclosed little world.

The design as a whole offers the potential for de-dramatizing illness and for helping the patients to progress towards a more rapid recovery.

So the best choice is to minimise the number of material choices, colours and structural components to ensure that the core of the building provides a tranquil background that is sustainable in the long term and that can be filled with a range of content over time.

The project tries to create best possible atmosphere fot the patients and the residents .

This is done by ensuring ample light throughout the building, easy access to nature and outdoor spaces, transparent wards with easy overviews, and a well thought layout.

Although the needs of outpatients are less intense than those of hospital inpatients, an individual’s visit may still be very stressful. Every effort should be made to make the outpatient visit as unthreatening and comfortable as possible, and to make the patient’s experience more like going to a doctor’s office than to a hospital.

The wards are designed mainly if the safety of the patient kept in mind , th e wards are arranges with a stand by operating room and wardens on both ends to take care of the patients.

Each ward has a pleasnt view and has a bright and clean atmosphere which contributes to the well-being of the patients mind.

The hospital posseses several scenic walkways throughout includind several small green gardens to relax in.

The main spaces on the second floor of the hopital would be the resident wards.

Each ward has a pleasnt view and has a bright and clean atmosphere which contributes to the well-being of the patients mind.

The starting point for this project is a concept that functions in multi ple layers.

One of the most imprtant zones can be considered to be the therapy ward. The ward is designed in such a way to provide easy access to residents as wellas as day patients.

The therapy ward is self - enclosed and creates a alming and peaceful environment for the patents to get treated.

The architecture of new healthcare buildings must be robust, flexible and future-proof.

The contents of the building compose the physical framework that makes these competing needs come together to generate synergies between the building’s different users.

Community space : This space acts as an binding element in phase 2 among the healing spaces.

The design itself is inherently community-oriented and understands public space as an anthropological ground from which identity and social relations grow.

It is community oriented and its main focus is to increase the healthy discussion on mental health , a current understanding and the process of regarding it without stigma.

Through a partici patory approach and through placing community engagement at the core of the design process, this public space aims to give transformative power to a local community to understand through programs and events current stigma surrounding mental illness.

While the other events take place in the healing spaces the people will ussualy corrograte to a common point to relax , this being one of the spaces to increase their understanding.

Change of perspective : Change of perspective : The project consists od a pedestal structure which leads up to a platform that is enclosed on all sides by hanging concave walls , cutting of the light and creating the illusion of a sudden darkness.

The idea which fueled tje creation of this structure was a need for people to understand why some mentally ill people act the way they do.

This need was born out of an urge the seemingly normal people to understand what another person going through.

This leads to small short fims being shown from anothers perspective with the audio focused on you , this all adds up into creating an experience that gives you a ‘change of perspective.

How does it feel to hear discordant voices in your head to want to act but being unable to ? This is what this eelmant in the helaing space aims to do .

Visual theatre : This particular element from the phase 2 of the healing spaces is sigmificant to showcasing performance artists and dispalying movies and ur other creative works.

The long facade encloses the amphitheatrical geometry of the site, creating a cozy interior with good acoustics.

Hierarchy, inherent to the propaganda theater of the thirties, is replaced by horizontality.

The architectural form of this structure reflects the collective character of the process. Each creative contribution has been clearly articulated in the design.

The location of the entrance blurs borders between the performers and the audience.

The structure consists of a big screen, storage space and a lounge and also holds another floor for viewing and displaying purposes.

Exhibition gallery : The place is renewed for a fine art gallery . The façcade could be recognized as a mass but designed not to damage the view of the surroundings by the vertical louvers. Because of the landscape looked through the vertical lines

The opennes of the design is what sets it it apart. Within the thick mass of the building volume is a series of interlocking spaces that visitors can meander freely within, slowly ascending, enjoying a choreographed journey with directed views both inward and outward.

Composed primarily of various textured concretes, with and without aggregate, the façade and materiality of the building is heavy in nature, like a solid rock sitting firmly in the shifting environment.

Mirror of dissolution :

The mirror of dissolution can be considered to be a very interesting piece in the healing spaces.

While the elements of phase 2 can be said to heal the scrars caused by siciety regarding mental illness, the pool diisolution does the opposite it ri ps away any sense of vandor regarding societies delusions on the topic of mental illness.

The steucture is a simple rectangular buildings with large openings to let the light in.

Thenn there is a large circular mirrored floor surrounded by concave walls where the the most disastorius cases on mental illness are recorded. .

The mirrored surfaces reflect the emotion displayed by you and the people surrounding you to finally remove the venneer showcasing the cruelty of mankind to people they think are differnt from them-selves.

The structure includes a stage which in fact functions as a large scale sun dial, There a number of masonry walls rgar have been arranged in such a way to guide the viewer around the area.

The healing spaces has a particular interactive ground where the patients as well as the visitors can interact freely.

This goves a chance for the visitors to see that these people who create their own handicrafts, work and sell are not that different to the everyday working induvidual.

THis site also ilcudes permanent pillars so as to create a conapy depending on the season the visitors use the healing spaces.
