CITY CENTER THIS PROJECT DEALS WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF A CITY CENTER TO CREATE A NEW LANDMARK FOT THE CITY ‘VIJAYAWADA’ WHICH IS IN THE SOUTHERN PART OF INDIA. THE SPECULATIVE PROJECT EXPLORES VARIOUS WAYS OF IDENTIFYING UNIQUE CULTURAL ELEMENTS PERTAINING TO VIJAYAWADA AND TO IMPLEMENT THEM IN TO DESIGN THIS PROJECT ALSO DEALS WITH THE DEVELOPMENT OF SHOPPING BAZZAR FOR LOCAL VENDORS AND ACT AS MARKET AREAS THE MAIN THEME OF THE PROJECT IS TO ESTABLISH A CULTURAL CENTER TO SHOWCASE VARIOUS ARTISTIC ELEMENTS THAT ORIGINATED IN AND AROUND VIJAYAWADA RIGHT FROMM 10TH CENTURY A.D.

Planning Orientaion

The merging ellipse is rotated 180 deg and the resulting shape provides ambient space for landscape on both sides to tackle the heat of Vijayawada.

Understanding the dynamics of demands around the site

the planning orientation is based on the windflow and the sun’s angle and intensity , the reason being Vijayawada being one of the hottest cities in India , it is important to base the planning configuration in such a way so as to enhance the micro climate of the city square for more visitors even during daytime The block is carved in to an ellipse to provide a conceal & reveal feel for the passers & to partially reveal every shop’s windows to generate curiosity

The predominant amount of windflow is from south east monsoon winds in Vijayawada which happens for 7 months and then the North west monsoon wind takes over for the remaining year. Hence, the orientation of plan happens to be placed along the SE direction to make the most out of this season to tackle the heat.

For most part of the days, the sun’s azimuth angle is towards S & SW direction at 60 deg.

With a day’s length lasting 11 1/2 hours

The blocks are divided into 2 ellipses which are merged together with another ellipse in an evolving configuration

The shopping complex and the cultural center provides enclosure for the Vijayawada tower which is the new landmark for the city to boast their tourist revenue

The site is filled with local trees to reduce the noise pollution from the highways as well as increase the air quality of the city square

The shopping complex is oriented facing the SE direction to make the most out of the natural ventilation for the window shoppers as well as to provide ventilation for the people sitting in Open Air Theatre

The cultural complex is orintated towards the SW direction so as to receive ample amount of daylight into the art museams & to provide natural day light well into the sculpture theatre as well as art exhibitions

Form configuration

The sunken foodcourt offers a quie ambient place to meet and catch up with people hidden away from the on going traffic by dense trees and the stack effect offers a relatively lower temperature to tackle the heat of Vijayawada which can rise upto 47 deg celsius.

The entire structure is raised to a podium level so as to not dirsrupt the existing path that the passers were using to reach their residence quickly through this site and to elevate the view of the shopping complex as well as the cultural center to attract people amid busy traffic junctions .

Tower shape evolved from the folds of Kuchipudi dancer’s saree who tie their saree higher to show their feet movements during the dance form

The 75m towers offers a pinnalce of a view towards the dynamic vijayawada suuroundered by mountains and offers a 24/7 view towards the fishing harbour in Krishna river

The basic design of the tower is evolved from the saree folds of a Kuchipudi dance form which originated in Vijayawada

The site was already populated by a farmers market illegally and the proposal is to accomadate this farmers market into the design

The complex is raised to a 4m podium level to accomodate the passers who previously used this site to reduce their travel time by 10 mins .

The cultural complex is divided in visual art center and performing art center.

The visual center consists of sculpture gallery, 2 temporary exhibitions, 4 permanant exhibitions while the performing center has an mini performing theatre and an auditorium which houses 800 people.

Vijayawada tower is a multi purpose tower with shopping spaces, art museums, vertical gardens and sky roof restaurants.

The main purpose of vijayawada tower is to create a sense of unity and to evoke a sense of communal spirit within the heart of Vijayawada.

Vijayawada also need a landmark in terms of a massive structure which culminatively shows the heart and culture of the city filled with secular people and races. The main idea behind the tower is to represent a part of the city’s culture and Kuchipudi being a famous dance form all over India originated in VIjayawada and spread across the nation. The tower shows the city’s tribute to the dance form and to the people of Vijayawada

This space is reserved for quite contemplation and is placed right below the connecting space between the shopping and cultural center and provides a 360 degree enclosure for the tower. .

The walkpath around the complex is well lit to create an ambient experience after daytime.

The tower being 90m high offers a view point from any part of the square involuntarily uniting the whole community of vijayawada and acts as a backdrop for OAT

The connecting space between the cultural & shopping center is at first floor level surrounded by artficial ponds on either side of the walking space.

The back entrance of the square has a total of 81 nylon steel rods , through which kids and adults alike can navigate. play & walkthrough.

The vijayawada square is a culmination of communal spaces and strikes a right chord between public and private spaces.

The top most floor of the tower at 90m high offers a scenic view down towards the square & towards Krishna river.

The front OAT offers a quite relaxing space for contemplating & leisure activites and acts as a community space during festive seasons.

02URBAN REVAMP- OPEN SPACES

If you plan spaces cities for cars and traffic, you get cars and traffic. If you plan cities for people and greenary, we get people greenary. - Fren Kent.

The settlements in Vellore began during 9th century A.D with the rise of Choza settlements giving rise to Vellore fort, providing security to town, the markets were established around this fort . Periodically, humans started settling in this region giving rise to the old town.

But, it was only during the british invasion, the new town got developed with the emergence of CNC hospital, one of the world’s largest hospitals.

Satwachari park was identified due to the increasing number of old age people moving to Satwachari. The ultimate solution is to provide a walking track and fitness center for old age people

With the new bus stand, along with the existing market in place this sector’s traffic has risen to 20% in one year. Hence, a walking pod has veen designed for the ease of pedastrians.

Located in new town, opposite to the town’s main attraction- Vellore fort the ultimate goal of periyar park is to bring people from different communities and celebrate for a common cause- Kabadi by designing and building a kabadi and racing track stadium.

New market

Market has been shifted to new town due to traffic conditions. But, with Vellore’s temperature rising to 45deg celsius, A solar powered roof offers both shade and power to the sellers within.

otteri park located on the far end of the town, this park utilises the nearby lake to provide scenic views generating income to the corporation on a commercial basis.v

A team of 5 members documented the entire old and new town, coming with various site proposals for proposed open spaces ultimately increasing the open space percentage to 7%

Modern circle of life India is home to 45,000 plant species, 90,000 animal species . But, with a population of 1.3 billion people, the spaces reserved for greenary and animal shelters are vast decreasing.

WIth context to Vellore, a small town in southern part of India, the percentage of open spaces had been decreased from 10% to mere 1% leading to destruction of natural habitats. This also causes adverse effects to human health relating to lung diseases and psychological problems.

Modern cycle of life

According to national statistics, a group of 250 people requires one hectare of open space to maintain a proper lifestyle. Vellore with a town population of 5,18,000 requires 2072 hectares of open space.

Contrary to the current percentage of open spaces which is 28 hectares on a total area of 89 sq.km amounting to just one percent of the required open space for a healthy lifestyle.

Such a open space to oquiped space ratio gives a ample open space of 40sqm for every 2 persons.

Out of the 28 hectares reserved for open space, 15% is reserved for irrigation leaving only 23.8 hectares for open space & parks.

Ways of increasing open spaces Given the right model to follow, the open spaces in Vellore can be increased to match with the requirements 1) Set up camps to teach the importance of open spaces 2) Preserve the existing parks and open spaces 3) By introducing various green belts and green ways along with the injection of various parks across the old and new town.

VALALLAR PARK :

Vallalar is situated in new town. The major part of the project was designed through ‘design thinking’ trying to understand the core problems that the people face as a society in this location. The problems identified were the lack of open space reserved for children without traffic interfering, to provide an ambient space for performing yoga and other group activities and finally a space for them to come and have a relaxed time. the solution provided was to club various activities preferred by different age groups into a 3 - tier park, with the basement reserved for children, ground level for elders and the first floor for group events.

The entire periphery of the park is designed for openess with a minimum measure of barricades to mark the boundary of the park to ensure welcomeness among residents.

A 40m of carefully desinged walkpath following the concept of hide and reveal. Initail path is between the maple trees and ends with a fun game of walking between the sprinkler systems, providing a calm and relaxing experience

The entire basement is floored with greenary, to ensure a relaxing and a cool environment is provided for the children and adults alike.

The entire park is designed using the process of evaluating each space through ‘ the five sensories’. The basement of the park is entirely dedicated to the sensory of smell and touch, while the top floor highligts the sense of belonging. The ground level is for sight by placement of library, and various view points towards the basement play area.

PERIYAR is situated in old town opposite to the famous vellore fort. Ideally located on the center of the town, the entire design is focused to bring the community together towards the heart of the town, by exploring the various cultural and social flavours, this town has to offer.

Periyar park is designed particulary to solve one pressing issue- lack of socialism.

This issue is tackeled by building a state of the art stadium to house kadabi mataches.

Reframing the Tunnel route.

Due to rapid urbanisation, the town which was designed for a population of mere 50,000 now has 5,87,000 causing marjor urban sprawl.

This leaves little to no space for pedastrians and cyclists alike.

Survey shows that the number of road accidents have doubled in the past one year owing to faulty traffic lights, inadequate number of zebra and level crossing and more importanly the usage of bikes or two wheelers over pedastrian walk paths.

Typically, building a tunnel for 1 mile costs 1 billion dollars, but one of the major ways to reduce the cost is reduce the diameter of the tunnel, cutting the cost by 10-15 times.

Hence instead of building a tunnel for the cars, This tunnel focuses on pedastrians.

A tunnel tube made of concrete and glass isdesigned 15m above the road level providing 24*7 access for pedastrians

The tube is accessed byproviding staris and escalators along every 45m of the belt reducing the traffic rate by 5%

Current problems The new market designed is devoid ofroofs causing major health issues for sellers and buyers due to excess heat. The maximum temperature of vellore can reach upto 45 deg celsius.

Solar panels are installed on the roof to compensate for the energy consumed by these weekly wagers who’s weekly wages lies between 1000-2000rs (25 pounds) reducing the energy consumption by 75%

A roof is installed over 6 concrete colums providing a light shaft inbetween giving for light and ventilation while providing shade

Maple trees are planted along the periphery of the market to increase the sensory of smell.

Providing roof over heads The entire roof is slanted 30-60 deg to allow only evening sunlight.

5-star hotel This project deals with developing and designing a 5 star hotel in the major developing part of the city, Chennai.

OMR, otherwise known as outer ring road is a major developing belt connecting the city with 12 neighbouring towns.

The scope of the project is to analyse the local context of the site in relation with a concept called ‘critical regionalism’

Critical Regionalism Temples in India followed a more curvilinear style of architecture during 9th century A.D. Following the invasion of Mughals and later the British rule, These curvilinear style were converted into typical box buildings in order to comply with the universal style of architecture. If it isn’t for the role of Critical Regionalism, we’d all be living in a dystopian future where all the buildings in all over the world would a monotonous box.

This ‘speculative project’ deals with exploring ancient style of temple architecture in a more modernist outlook trying to understand the core of Critical Regionalism concept framped by Frampton.

Starting from bottom picture, the view takes us from the ground level to top floor of the hotel in a systematic way offering a person 360 deg view of the entire hotel whereever they stand.

The infinity pool located on the curvilinear truss offers a magnificient view towerds the external setting of the park, While the lower level offers a unique outdoor restaurant replacing tables & chairs with vintage cars.

Critical Regionalism?

:

Architecture that takes advantage of innovative modern design to solve contextual problems is what makes Critical regionalism importatant for every culture and society in the world. making us understand the human nature where different societies have different cultures and different ways to embrace nature and situations, thus requires different styles of architecture pertaining to that particular society.

In order to tackle the excess noon sunlight, the top portion of the block is projected to provide shade for the rest of the building.

The concave and convex part of the block represents the ancient form of temple designing, termed as Sihkhara.

The temple with shikhara is composed of the sanctuary (garbhagriha) preceded by a portico and crowned by the curvilinear roof and is a testimony to the prosperity of the Hindu sanctuaries of this era.

From the beginning of the ninth century, the use of these curvilinear roofs extended to the northern kingdoms, where its use was perpetuated until the contemporary era, at the same time that it diversified following regional styles.

Understanding these styles not only help us in implementing aesthetic values, but their study can help us understand how the ancient techniques of designing can help solve various cultural and social problems.

Each room is based off traditional Indian household during 19th century, with minimalist furniture and usage of raw materials like hard wood flooring and glass, even the TV cabinets are furnished in relevance to that era.

luxury apartment This project deals with developing and designing a luxury apartment, right at the crux of the city.

The site is situated on a revamp land, initially housing EWS people . Hence, the project also deals with housing LIG and EWS. The scope of the project is to analyse various ways of finding a cord between people from different section and cultural backgrounds.

The project helps in setting a framework in housing different section of people without any partiallity in terms of materials used type of construction method employed.

Everything is fading The idea behind this speculative project is “ showing off� that a healthy co-housing can exist if properly planned erasing the barriers between the low income and the high income group of people.

The entire module is supported by columns placed along the periphery with the lift core located on the entrance corner, along with vertical shafts for electrical and plumbing connections. The balconies act as a second skin for each block to resist the harsh climate.

One of the major problems with co-housing is to promote a healthy lifestyle within people from all walks of life wihth various economic and cultural backgrounds.

The modules of the tower focuses on bringing the communities on a more intimate level by clubbing one, two and three bedroom modules together on each floor leve land by introducing a community kitchen and dining hall for every 15th floor level.

Search & Rescue Drone This live project is focused specially to solve one particular issue, to aid the rescuers to locate people stuck in Isolated locations which are otherwise inaccessable by the rescuers.

India as a country witness major flooding due to inadequae drainage systems and 2 seasonal monsoon winds, namely, South-West and North-East monsoon winds.

Often causing major destruction, both economic and healthwise it becomes more than 10 days at times to find people who went missing in these floods.

Designed to be no more than 450 grams, these light weight drones can be manufactured in bulk and are 3d printed using additive manufacturing process using carbon fiber filament

Flight controllers

Micro cc3d flight controller, which receives the signal from receiver and directs the flight in moving direction

Batteries

2 turnigy batteries to have a stable flight time of 15-17 minutes to aid the rescuers in a longer mission

Receivers HT-TR6K receiver receives the signal from the ground controller and directs it to the flight controller

ESC Eclectronic speed controllers receives signals from PDB and sends optimum energy to the motors which inturn power the propellors.

PDB

power distribution boards receives signals from flight controller and directs it to servos, cameras and finally electronic speed controllers

In order to showcase the arrangement of the components, the component tray has been hidden for better interpretation

Manufacturing stage

06 Honeycomb Vase

Honeycombs have been studied by scientists and mathematicians alike for centuries, right from greek mythology.

The perfect geometry of the hexagonal shape of the cells not only aligns in a air tight manner but actually reduces the surface area of the overall shape than the other shapes like triangle and square

The shape of the cells is such that two opposing honeycomb layers nest into each other, with each facet of the closed ends being shared by opposing cells.

Even if the individual cells are not in perfect geometry with each other, the cells align perfectly. Taking inspiration from this imperfection the flower vase is designed by aligning unsymmetric geomtries that’fit perfectly creating a overall shape which is not only light

Additive manufacturing.

After the design was modeled and converted into an stl file, the vase was manufactured using a desktop 3D printer by using a PETG filament, owing to it’s excellent water resistance ability and durabilty in harsh climates

Printed using a transperant filament, the aesthetic appeal of the vase can improved by the visible roots and soil within

Since the model is 3D printed, the scale of the vase can be increased or decreased according to the application and environment
