Stylish town centre HAIR and Beauty students from Bedford College paraded their traffic-stopping styles through the town centre before stepping on to the catwalk at the Corn Exchange.

With this year’s theme of ‘Under the Sea’, the annual show is the highlight of the calendar of the Brooks training salon training.

A catwalk of nearly 100 models and style artists wowed the audience and the winners shared £500 worth of Love Bedford gift vouchers donated by the BedfordBID on behalf of town centre businesses.

Hair and Beauty manager Kerry Attfield said: “The show is the highlight of the year for students as it gives them a taste of the excitement of the world of high fashion as it exists outside of the local salon. It is also a great showcase for Bedfordshire businesses to see the talent we are producing at Brooks training salon.”

Christina Rowe, Director of BedfordBID says: “These Hair and Beauty students are closely linked to the many hair and beauty businesses in the town centre and go on to work in local salons and spas.

Green success at local election BEDFORD Green Party is celebrating convincing election wins, gaining two new councillors in Castle Ward. Long-term local campaigners Lucy Bywater and Ben Foley have been elected as the very first Green Party borough councillors in Bedford.

Lucy and Ben are dedicated to continuing to work for the people of Castle Ward, regardless of whether they voted for them, and regardless of their position on Europe. Lucy said: “We would like to thank the voters of Castle Ward and our committed campaign team, it has been wonderfully inspiring to have so much support”

MAYOR DAVE ANNOUNCES HIS NEW CABINET FOLLOWING RE-ELECTION FOR FOURTH TERM

FOLLOWInG his re-election last month for a fourth term, mayor Dave Hodgson has announced his new Cabinet. The new Bedford Borough Council Executive features one Independent and three Labour members in addition to four Liberal Democrat Councillors, reflecting the Liberal Democrats’ increased strength in becoming the largest group on the Council following their six gains in the may 2, 2019, Council elections.

Following the changes, mayor Dave’s Cabinet represents groups comprising over two-thirds of the seats won across Bedford Borough in the Council elections.

All of the members of the new Executive have a track record as Councillors, with mayor Dave intent on hitting the ground running in tackling the key issues for Bedford Borough, including maintaining the Council’s remarkable record of saving services in the face of ongoing government funding cuts.

The new members on the Cabinet include previous Liberal Democrat Group Leader and former Adult Services Committee Chair Cllr Wendy

Rider, who takes up the post of Executive member for Adult Services.

Joining his Labour colleagues Cllrs Colleen Atkins and Louise Jackson on the Cabinet is Cllr James valentine, who has been appointed as Executive member for Education and Children’s Services.

There is also a return to the Cabinet for Independent Cllr Doug mcmurdo, as Executive member for Leisure and Culture.

Commenting, mayor Dave Hodgson said: “I am delighted to announce this incredibly strong team to help take the Council forwards. I want to thank all of the outgoing Cabinet members, each of whom made a huge contribution to our record of saving services in the face of brutal government funding cuts and getting the best for all communities across Bedford Borough.’

“The new administration has the right mix of talent, continuity and experience to enable us to face the challenges ahead and keep saving services, creating jobs and protecting our environment.”

Bedford Academy of Dance raises over £6,500 with Charity Dance Show Approximately 200 local children took part in two fantastic performances of the Bedford Academy of Dance show, Our Favourite Things, at the Corn Exchange on Sunday, may 12.

Children aged from two to 18 performed a variety of dances based on their favourite things, including sweets, rainbows, starlight, best friends and the circus. The children have been working hard since the beginning of the year to put on the best possible show. not only was the show a great success but, in putting on the performances, the dancers also raised much needed funds for two charities. The Primrose Unit at Bedford Hospital was presented

with a cheque for £1,000 and the Brain Tumour Research Trust received a cheque for just over £5,500. This brings the total raised over the years by the

Academy for various charities to over £38,500.

Debra Harding from the Primrose Unit and Paula Rastrick from The Brain Tumour Research Trust attended to accept their donations. They both really enjoyed the show and were overwhelmed by the generosity of all those involved.

Paula Rastrick commented that brain tumours kill more people under the age of 40 than any other cancer, and yet just 1% of the national research spend goes towards researching brain tumours. All monies raised by donations such as this one are therefore vital to the charity.

BEDFORD born matthew Gouldesbrough certainly isn’t sitting around waiting for the phone to ring. Immediately following his graduation from Italia Conti Theatre Academy, he jumped straight into launching his own theatre company, ELEGY, with his new play, ‘Faith and Heresy,’ which sold out at several London Fringe venues.

Following the success of Faith & Heresy, matthew, former pupil of Bedford Boys School and current member and Young Ambassador for The national Youth Theatre of Great Britain, decided to take on an even bigger project. This year, his latest new play, ‘Holy Land’ will tour the UK throughout June and July, finishing at The Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August. ELEGY is thrilled to announce that it will be visiting The Quarry Theatre from July 21-24, with four performances of ‘Holy Land’ as part of The Bedford Fringe Festival.

A group of 20 Level One bricklayers and carpenters worked in relays over ten days to help construct one of the facility blocks on the site.

As part of a commitment to encourage students to enter national competitions throughout the year, recent success at the college have included two prizes from the Worshipful Company of Glovers’ Glove Design Poster competition.

Two Bedfordshire winners in Queen’s Awards Hm Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen nellis, has praised two Bedfordshire-based companies who were among the winners in the 2019 Queen’s Awards for Enterprise, the UK’s most prestigious business awards, announced on Hm The Queen’s Birthday.

Food and drink advocate joins SEMLEP board BUSInESS leader, Rachel mallows mBE DL is appointed to the South East midlands Local Enterprise Partnership Board as the Food and Drink sector lead.

With over 30 years’ experience in business, Rachel has directly engaged and supported the local food and drink sector for over 10 years – as Director of the Carlsberg UK northamptonshire Food and Drink Awards and, as Chair of SEmLEP’s Food and Drink Sector Strategy Board for the past couple of years.

In her role as Food and Drink Lead on the SEmLEP Board, Rachel will work to promote opportunities for the sector in the wider growth and development of the local economy.

Mayor announces new climate change cabinet committee

‘Good’ news for popular school

OvERSUBSCRIBED Biddenham International School and Sports College was Inspected by Ofsted before the Easter break and received a really positive report being deemed to be a good school in all categories.

Inspectors found that, ‘Pupils enjoy their learning’ and ‘pupils are making good progress... and behave well because as one student put it, ‘everyone here wants to learn.’ ‘The report confirms the view of local parents who have chosen Biddenham as their firstchoice school for September resulting in not all parents getting one of the 200 places on offer and confirming the school’s popularity amongst parents.

It is also popular with staff at the school with more than 20 having chosen to send their children to the school and, indeed, ex-students many of whom come back to work in the school.

Eat yourself thin, Chris has lost 8st 5lbs and is now setting up to help others do the same CHRIS from Bedford found himself at the age of 48 overweight. Games design gurus have the X factor

STAFF at The Bedford College group have the X-Box Factor when it comes to the new ‘career sphere’ of 3D games art modelling.

Director of the Arts, Toby Clark and lecturer Phil Romeo recently helped to select the winner at the UK finals for WorldSkills which will see them representing the UK at the international finals being held in Kazan, Russia in August 2019, the olympics of skills training.

Toby and Phil worked alongside WorldSkills Chief Expert Mike Spence to identify the next generation’s top talent in the growing international multi-billion pound business of 3D Digital game Art. They were invited because Bedford College, part of The Bedford College group, is one of a limited number of Further Education locations in the UK which offers a computerised design course covering animation and games. lecturer Phil explains the fast-moving

They explained that the career options were very flexible but it is more about having a passion and desire to learn that is important. BMS students selected for National Youth Theatre

BEDFoRD Modern School (BMS) students Jade Ajibola (Year 12) and Francesca Carter (Year 10) have been selected for the highly competitive national Youth Theatre (nYT) summer course this year at goldsmiths in london between July29 and August 10.

Jade and Francesca, who are both actively involved in Performance Arts at BMS, were picked from the 6,000 hopefuls who auditioned across the country between January and March. on completion of the intensive two-week course they will become nYT company members and able to access a range of performance and talent development opportunities.

Francesca auditioned in northampton and Jade in Cambridge. Each audition consisted of a three-hour workshop with 40 other young actors, where the candidates took part in improvisation workshops with nYT Associates in the morning, and presented a monologue of their choice in the afternoon.

The talented pair spoke enthusiastically about

the experience and explained how they had learnt a great deal about dramatic techniques and group work during the sessions.

Modestly, the girls expressed disbelief at their success. Jade said: “i was shocked but delighted to have been chosen. i was surrounded by so many great actors in the auditions so to be recognised is this way is fantastic.”

Francesca added: “i was so surprised as we had heard that it is unusual to get through on your first attempt. i am so excited and really looking forward to taking part in the course in the summer.” laura Coltman, Director of Performance Arts at Bedford Modern School said: “We are very proud of Jade and Francesca and their achievement. “it is super to see the continued success of our students when auditioning for such prestigious companies. Both have been part of the two main school productions this year and i look forward to seeing them develop even further in the future.”

WE have all heard the stories that make their rounds in the media and on social media, of cowboy builders leaving their clients in the lurch, with huge bills and unsafe or incomplete construction work. What you do not hear about are the many instances of cowboy clients who demand extra work at no cost, haggle over final accounts and often have no intention of paying. However, this is more prevalent than you think!

So if you are a home owner or planning a commercial development, or indeed you are a builder, then I am going to impart some understanding and enlightenment: because putting a building contract in place protects both client and builder in a residential as well as commercial setting. It gives clarity as to what is expected by both parties before, during and after works.

Key points to be considered for inclusion in a Contract: 1. Contract sum and what it covers – the figure and the scope of work, drawings, specification etc. The more detailed the better helps to ensure all know what is being done.

2. Extras – Agree how things will be agreed and priced.

3. Payment terms – Clarity on when and how the payments will be made, for what and whether a sum is held back (retention) until all works are complete.

4. Defects – How defects will be dealt with during or after completion of works and in what timeframe.

5. Insurance – ensuring the correct insurance is in place for the works and any design 6. Dispute resolution – How any dispute will be dealt with should the situation exist.

An estimate from a builder is just that and will likely rise. A quotation can also contain hidden terms. Best to stick to an industry standard building contract as a minimum. These can be simple to use and assist with all of the above.

Make sure you don’t become a victim of cowboy builders or get into an awkward scenario on a costly conversion or alteration by not having a clear understanding of what each of you are doing, for how much and in what time.

I am not a lawyer but there is legislation in place to ensure that the Landlord has certain obligations. If you cannot get him to do the work, you can make a legal claim against him. New extension for Rothsay Education Centre A MUCH needed extension to an adult education facility in Bedford can now go ahead thanks to a generous donation from the Connolly Foundation.

The Rothsay Education Centre in Bedford, a completely self-funded charity, provides over 200 courses each year to people over 50 years old.

The courses, ranging from art, to languages and literature, history, music and science extend to yoga and Pilates as well as Bridge classes are stimulating and challenging without being too formal. All take place in a beautiful Victorian family house with a large garden.

Weekend and summer courses are also offered to anyone aged over 18.

But the premises, in Rothsay gardens, are bursting at the seams, so work to upgrade and update the current building is now going ahead with an extension to follow.

Animal extinction – action through education at college SHUTTLEWORTH College in Bedfordshire has been singled out for praise by the Species 360 Conservation Science Alliance for providing vital information which could save creatures across the globe from extinction.

The animal welfare team and students have been inputting data about creatures in their care since 2017 into a Zoological Information management System (ZImS). In total they have added information on 596 birds, reptiles, amphibians and mammals of 302 species “making a huge impact on the understanding of these species’ life histories”.

Said Species 360: “A paper published in the journal Proceedings of the national Academy of Sciences using data recorded by Shuttleworth College in collaboration with others zoos and aquariums worldwide – confirms that critical information is missing from global data for more than 98% of known species of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians.

“It’s a gap with far-reaching

implications for conservationists seeking to blunt the impact of mass extinctions.

“That changed when researchers added in date from a previously untapped source – ZImS. “Shuttle worth College records its data in ZImS which is then curated by wildlife professionals working in 97 countries.

“It seems inconceivable. Yet scientists tasked with saving species often had to power through with ‘best guess’ assumptions.”

Thanks to Shuttleworth College students, who are eagerly awaiting the opening of their £3.65 Zoological Education Centre in the autumn of 2019, and others: “Adding ZImS was like turning on a the lights in an otherwise very dim room” says Dalia A. Conde, Director of Species 360.

Incorporating ZImS boosted the Species Knowledge Index (SKI) which was developed by scientists to map threatened animals.

FIGHTER Debbie Burrells said her farewells to friends on may 23, 2019, and her parting wave was presenting two HUGE cheques to the motor neurone Disease Association.

APPOINTMENT TO FACE TOWN CENTRE CHALLENGE

I think most people are suffering from election fatigue at the moment, but looking back to the recent mayoral election, I am hugely grateful to have been re-elected for a fourth term.

I want to thank everyone for their support, and also to assure everyone that the hard work on behalf of everyone across the Borough, whoever they voted for, got back underway immediately. many new Councillors have been elected, and I look forward to working with them and all councillors in the four years to come. I held discussions with representatives and individuals from each council group in the days following the elections, in order to establish and consolidate good working relationships.

The first announcement of the new term was the creation of a new Climate Change Cabinet Committee. This will involve all parties and will have an important role as we strive to maintain and accelerate the progress we’ve made in cutting carbon, while aiming for zero carbon by 2030.

The next key announcement was the composition of my new Cabinet. This features Liberal Democrat, Labour and Independent Councillors, representing over two-thirds of the seats won across Bedford Borough in the local elections.

All of the Cabinet members have a track record as Councillors, and it’s crucial that we hit the ground running in the task of continuing to save services, create jobs and protect our environment.

The portfolios include a new town centres brief, reflecting the particular, growing challenges for all UK town centres and which need a strong, effective response.

With his passion and commitment to our towns Cllr Henry vann, who also takes on Planning matters, will help to deliver that, in partnership with local businesses and others.

In common with the rest of the incredibly strong Cabinet team, I look forward to working with him to get the best for our communities.

PRIVATISATION IS FAILING AND COSTING US DEAR

‘It ought to be lovely to be old’ It ought to be lovely to be old To be full of the peace that comes from experience And wrinkled ripe fulfilment.

D H Lawrence’s poem ‘It ought to be lovely to grow old’ from which those words come was read at the Lord Lieutenant’s Service for voluntary Organisations at St mary’s Woburn on may 19th.

This annual celebration of the diverse and dedicated voluntary contribution of so many in our county had as its theme this year ‘older people’.

Preparing for this service I took the opportunity to connect with some of those who work to support, empower and care for those of us who are older. A repeated theme from everyone was an emphasis on the priority of enabling people to retain control of their lives and their circumstances for as long as possible. It is the older woman who can retain pleasure in her garden because of the assistance of the person who maintains it from Age UK Bedfordshire; it is the older man who can feel secure because of simple adaptations installed by a handyman from Age Concern Luton. It is the person with dementia who can still manage at home because technology sourced by the borough adult services team prevents a hot-plate being left on or alerts family when they wander off. It is the plethora of voluntary and community organisations that befriend, care and enable. For many being old can be lovely.

For some, however, it is not lovely. The impact of loneliness, absence from family, mental health issues, financial vulnerability and the reality of abuse, especially from those who are there to care, can be devastating. For some the impact of illness, forgetfulness and disablement is crushing. There is still much to do!

But talk of ‘older people’ is not just about ‘them’. Whilst none of us willingly admit to be elderly, most of us will live to be ‘older’. In the words of Groucho marx: Anyone can get old. All you have to do is live long enough. As with all aspects of life ultimately what matters is that we treasure each person as precious in the sight of God what-ever their age. Playing our part in creating a society where all are valued, is a priority. What can you do to make your contribution?

After five years of failure the Government has finally conceded that the part-privatised probation service is better off in state hands.

Labour has announced a transformative policy to bring the national Grid back into public ownership, an ambitious scheme that would help tackle climate change and end fuel policy. These plans were of course met with snorts of derision by the Government who are ideologically opposed to anything that doesn’t generate a handsome profit for a private company.

From Carillion’s collapse, to last year’s train timetable debacle which implicated not only the hapless Grayling but several train operating companies, to the inability of G4S even to handle basic security contracts, the same story is repeated over and over; these outsourced contracts prove to be inefficient, secretive – and ultimately a costly fiasco.

And there are more disasters coming down the line. The ministry of Defence is pushing ahead with outsourcing its fire and rescue services despite a legal wrangle with controversial outsourcing firm Serco over the awarding of the contract.

It’s actually Capita who has been running the Fire Service College since 2013, but they have had a number of high-profile contract failures in recent years. Two years ago, Capita were stripped of a deal running the moD’s military estate after a damning report from the national Audit Office. The firm’s contract recruiting soldiers for the British army was a failure while Capita’s ‘Primary Care support’ contract with the nHS ended catastrophically after it was revealed that 48,000 women had not received cervical Screening letters.

It cannot be right that profits extracted from vital public services are used to line the pockets of shareholders when they could and should be reinvested in those services or used to reduce consumer bills. And it’s a scandal when the same firms that repeatedly fail to deliver – are allowed to re-tender their bids again and again. It’s time that the Government admitted that some things cannot and should not be run by the private sector.

HRH The Duke of Gloucester Inspects BMS’s cadets On Wednesday, may 15, HRH The Duke of Gloucester, KG, GCvO, SFI, inspected both Bedford modern School and Bedford School’s Combined Cadet Forces (CCF). The event marked the Centenary of King George v’s visit to Bedford to inspect both Bedford School and Bedford modern School’s Officer Training Corps’ on 27 June 1918.

The event was the first time both Contingents have formally paraded together since 1918 and took place in the Bedford School grounds. The parade was observed by dozens of spectators, including Headmasters and Principals from Bedford modern School, Bedford School, Bedford Girls School, Rushmoor, St Andrews and Bedford Free School.

The Duke of Gloucester is a grandson of George v and a first cousin to The Queen. The Duke has

many patronages, but of particular interest is his role as Colonel in Chief of the Royal Anglian Regiment as the BmS CCF Army Section is Royal Anglian badged and can trace its lineage to the modern 2nd Battalion Royal Anglian Regiment.

Speaking after the visit, Hm Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, said: “It was wonderful to welcome HRH The Duke of Gloucester to Bedford School during his three-part visit to the county of Bedfordshire. The Inspection of the Cadets was very impressive and it was particularly pleasing that HRH was able to unveil a plaque in the memorial Hall where his late Father, HRH Prince Henry KG, stood in 1926. It was clear that the staff and students at all the schools involved were proud to demonstrate the high standards they achieve.”

Westfield raise money for Lulu PUPILS of Westfield School are delighted to have raised more than £4000 for Lulu’s Appeal during a special charity week to raise money to send her for specialist treatment in America.

Lulu, six, was diagnosed just over a year ago with neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive cancer that has spread to her bones, bone marrow and lymphatic system.

In order to give her the best chance of recovery her family are raising £162,000 want to access the Bivalent vaccine clinical trial at the memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in new York, which is showing promising signs in reducing the likelihood of relapse.

Superhero Scavenger Hunt for homeless On Sunday, June 9, the SmART Prebend Centre will be hosting a family scavenger hunt to raise awareness and funds for the Bedford based homeless centre.

The Prebend team would like to welcome as many people as possible from the local community to join the fun, family event.

Lisa Harrison, SmART’s Area manager for Bedford said “we are excited to build on the success of last year’s Superhero bike ride!

This year we will be inviting families to walk, ride, scoot or skate their way around our scavenger trail to find hidden treasure!

Clues and questions will be suitable for all ages.”

The event will take place at Russell Park, Bedford on Sunday 9th June 2019 and runs from 10am until 4pm. There is a small donation of £2 to take part in the hunt and

this will include a completion prize pack. In addition to the hunt there will be old fashioned fair games, stalls and refreshments for everyone to enjoy. All profits from the day will be used to support the ongoing running costs of the SmART Prebend Centre.

All who attend are encouraged to dress as Superhero’s, but this is not essential.

Children must be accompanied by an adult, with adults able to accompany up to four children. First aiders will be in attendance at the event, however Parents and Guardians will be responsible for the safety of the children they accompany. Children under the age of 16 years who are riding bikes must wear a cycle helmet, those over 16yrs old are encouraged to do so.

The SmART Prebend Centre supports the homeless, the vulnerably housed and those who face issues of social isolation in Bedfordshire. The centre is open 365 days a year providing food, clothing, toiletries, showers and somewhere warm for the most vulnerable within the community.

GB rowing selection for Jessica

YEAR 12 Bedford modern School student and talented sportswoman Jessica Read is among the 33 rowers selected to represent Great Britain at the munich Junior Regatta on may 4-5, 2019.

This annual event takes place on the Olympic Regatta Course in munich during the first weekend of may and is the leading European high-performance regatta for junior rowers. The event attracts more than 1000 participants from 15 countries each year.

Prior to her selection, Jessica completed the GB Rowing Team Junior Trials process, beginning

with an assessment in Boston, Lincolnshire in november and then again in February, with a further spring assessment at the end of march.

BmS Director of Rowing, mark Bavington, said: “Jess has produced an incredible set of results this year to become one of the best female junior scullers in the country. It is exceptionally pleasing to see a home-grown talent come through our Year 9 rowing programme to competing in a Team GB crew. Jess is still only in Year 12, the sky is the limit to what she can achieve and every member of BmSBC will be supporting her along the way.”

Local community enjoys school farm

THE farm at Redborne Upper School, Ampthill is becoming a state-of-the-art community asset thanks to support from Bedfordshire charity, the Connolly Foundation.

The farm, which has seen lots of improvements and developments, is now being used more and more by local people and organisations including primary schools, disabled groups and the Brownies.

The Connolly Foundation also funds apprenticeships on the farm for students who want to study agriculture and husbandry. A

number of students have already successfully qualified whilst working on the farm and simultaneously studying at Shuttleworth College.

Andy Hodds who manages the farm said: “We are now becoming a real hands on facility for the local community to learn and enjoy. It is a big thank you to the Connolly Foundation who have supported us over recent years and helped to turn us into a stateof-the-art farm. We raise our own livestock including pigs, sheep and turkeys which we sell through our own farm shop.

Flitwick Scouts on the trail

ALL sections of Flitwick Scout Group participated in a worldwide event known as “Jamboree on the Trail” (JOTT). There were two stages of this year’s event; a walk of eight miles in the morning and five miles in the afternoon. most of those who took part walked the whole distance. Some of the Beavers (boys and girls aged 6 to 8) joined in the afternoon.

Six children were awarded their Bronze Chief Scout Award by Jonathan Smith, lead volunteer for the Group. Lucy Tucker, one of the recipients of the award, was also presented with the final one of all of the activity badges she could gain. These included builder, camp craft, global issues, health and fitness and space. She did reveal that her favourite badge was “animal friend.” Other activities have included sowing sunflowers.

The programme over the next few weeks includes visiting the allotment to transplant the sunflowers; and learning about disabilities.

The Cub Scouts (boys and girls aged 8 to 10) have been using their senses by going on a blindfold trail at Houghton House and also

following a tracking trail in Ampthill Park. Events on their programme over the next few weeks include a visit to the fire station, fire lighting and cooking and trampolining.

Ten of the Scouts (boys and girls aged 10 to 13) are going to experience a weekend on a narrowboat on the Grand Union Canal. This will include opening and closing locks and learning how to steer a 70’ boat. Also on the programme is an incident hike and fire safety.

In June around 120 children will be attending Group camp being held at Bromham. Activities they are looking forward to include caving, giant jenga and mini crossbows. Their six day summer camp, being held at Thriftwood, Brentwood in Essex has over 40 children attending.

Activities for this camp include crate staking, water rolling, laser tag, 3D maze and kayaking.

Adult volunteer Peter misson said, “Scouting provides opportunities for children to learn skills for life and gives adult volunteers the chance to help those children develop and grow.”

Lord-Lieutenant’s service of thanksgiving OvER 400 people from across Bedfordshire come together at St mary’s Church, Woburn on Sunday, may 19 2019 to celebrate the work of the voluntary Organisations in Bedfordshire.

The theme for this year’s service was “Older People”.

Hm Lord-Lieutenant of Bedfordshire, Helen nellis, accompanied by her husband Professor Joe nellis, and supported by the vice LordLieutenant, Colonel Chris Sharwood-Smith mBE and her seven Lord-Lieutenant Cadets, welcomed Their Graces The Duke and Duchess of Bedford, the Bishop of Bedford The Rt Rev Richard Atkinson OBE, High Sheriff of Bedfordshire meryl Dolling, the mayor of Bedford, the Deputy Chief Fire Officer, Town mayors from across the county and representatives of countywide organisations and armed forces personnel.

Guests were welcomed on arrival with a Guard of Honour from various Cadet Units in the county. Deputy Lieutenants were on hand to usher guests to their seats on arrival.

gardening Even more colour for this summer’s garden

T’S JUnE already and our Gardens are starting the summer show of colour. Behind the scenes the nurserymen have been busy with complicated breeding regimes to bring us even more new exciting plants to enjoy. Here are some that we at milton Ernest Garden Centre think you should try.

Dianthus is a hardy compact scented perennial plant that flowers continuously from June to September. They are easy to grow in well drained garden soil as a border edging plant or with multicompost and JI in containers in a light sunny place. Look out for Dianthus Early Love which is dark pink and Pink Kisses which is bright pink.

Petunias are popular bedding plants for any sunny aspect. They can be grown in borders, containers or hanging baskets to provide nonstop colour from June until October. They are pest free, tolerant of dry conditions and many trailing varieties especially do not need dead heading.

Petunia Purple Spotlight has a white edged lilac petal and deep purple throat. Petunia Suzie Storm is vibrantly Pinky Red with a darker centre while Petunia Pink mango is a gentler orange pink with a lime green centre. The hotter the summer the more flower these plants produce so feed occasionally with tomato food.

Why do I recommend tomato feed because it is high in potash which promotes the plant to produce lots of flower.

Thunbergia is a tropical climbing plant that is easy to grow and will add height to any bedding display or grow in a large patio tub. Provide a

trellis, wigwam or obelisk for support, a sunny place and humus rich soil and feed regularly with a liquid feed like tomato food. It will flower continuously then until the first frost. It can also be grown as a ground cover plant or trailing from a 40cm hanging basket. Thunbergia Raspberry Smoothie is a lovely soft pink and Thunbergia Susy Red Orange is a glowing orange colour.

Alstromerias are Peruvian Lilies. They are semi hardy summer flowering perennials (like shrub Fuchsias) with tropical blooms that make lovely cut flowers. They are excellent additions to the herbaceous border and will grow well in tubs on the patio. This plant enjoys rich peaty Selection of freshly made sandcompost, regular feeding with a liquid feed like tomato food and a sunny position. It is wiches of your choice completely pest free. In winter protect the plants Home-made fruit scone with in the ground with bark or move pots to a sheljam and clotted cream tered place and wrap in green fleece. In the border pull the stem out after flowering to Selection of Julie’s famouspromote new suckering shoots at ground level.

Some lovely varieties are Alstroemeria Lilian home-made cakes which is rich sugary pink, Alstroemeria Elaine Pot of tea for two Orange a glowing orange and Alstroemeria Diana bright yellow and orange.

Astrantias or Pincushion plants are perennials that die back to ground level in winter and produce fresh new growth every spring. They are fast growing in rich humus soil in sun or Radwell Road (just off the A6) partial shade and flower from June until September. They last a long time as a cut flower Milton Ernest MK44 1SH indoors. In the border they look good when planted with ornamental grasses. Some good

varieties to look for are Astrantia Roma which is lovely shades of pink with a deeper pink centre, Astrantia venice with pinky lilac flowers with green towards the centre and Astrantia Snow Star glistening white and green.

Boulevard Clematis are climbers that have been bred to grow in small spaces or large pots.

They are easy to grow with a busy habit and will flower from the top to the bottom of the plant throughout the summer months. Remove the flower heads as they fade to encourage more flowers. In late winter trim back to any strong new growth removing any dead shoots. Use a good moisture retaining compost when planting Clematis and feed every 2 weeks with a high potash feed like clematis or tomato feed.

Clematis Olympia has large lilac blue flowers from may to September, Clematis Bernadine has pearly white petals with a cream bar in the centre and Clematis nubia is a strong red with a darker red centre.

The Lawn Doctor

WITH little or no rain in the weeks before April began, I, in common with many gardeners I suspect, thought that at least that month’s annual showers would liven up the arid soil but sadly this was not the case.

And although we had a very welcome day of heavy rain in early may, the lack of moisture in the ground is already making life tricky this year. So, be aware that many plants and trees would really benefit from at least a weekly soak.

The key to all watering is to remember that plants take their moisture via the roots so a casual wafting of a watering can in their general direction will not suffice.

Hydrangeas are rightly regarded as ‘thirsty’ plants and after being ‘fried’ in last year’s hopefully atypically hot summer, it then had late frosts to contend with this year.

If yours are showing signs of brown, brittle leaves and buds at the top, the best option is to cut out the damaged material and then keep well watered.

I have had a lot of correspondence regarding lawns and many suffered badly last year. As we all know, nature abhors a vacuum, so where there was once verdant growth you may now have a collection of weeds.

If so, re-turf or re-seed. The easiest way is to break up the compaction using a fork or a spade, roughly level and then add some good quality fresh seed – remember that all seeds lose viability over time – and keep watered. newly grown grass is much more susceptible to drought than established grass simply because its roots are not as deep so keep a

careful eye on it during dry warm periods.

One much loved plant that has had a difficult time over the past couple of years is Kerria Japonica. Indeed, I am very much indebted to a regular reader for passing on this information who contacted me via the details below to highlight the problem and even proffer a solution. If anyone else would like to notify myself and other gardeners of new diseases, please do likewise.

Known as ‘Kerria Twig and Leaf Blight’, (Scientific name Blumeriella kerriae, but also known as Higginsia kerriae or Coccomyces kerriae), symptoms include leaves turning brown and falling as well as unsightly lesions appearing on the stems.

In the event that you should find this in your garden, although not believed to spread to other plants, the best course of action is to cut the plant to the ground, burn all clippings (or take to the local household waste centre) and then spray the remaining plant with ‘Uncle Tom’s Rose Tonic’.

This will then hopefully provide new growth with increased disease protection.

The answer to last month’s just for fun question is, the plant known as ‘Yorkshire Fog’ is type of grass, slightly grey in colour, that may be found in a lawn.

Rita Ora has been announced as Bedford Park Concerts headline act for their Saturday night concert in Bedford Park on July 27, 2019.

Rita’s set will be bursting at the seams with hit after hit, expect a total party atmosphere as one of the biggest female acts in the music industry performs in Bedford Park.

It was a momentous 2018 for Rita – the singer made UK chart history when her latest single ‘Let You Love me’ became her 13th Top 10 on the Official UK Singles Chart, meaning Rita set a new record for the most Top 10 singles by a British female artist.

Since breaking through in 2012 with her no.1 album Ora, Rita has become a force of nature in pop music. The singer has sold over seven million singles in total and her latest five singles have been

streamed over a billion times on Spotify. Some of her best-known hits include How We Do (Party), R.I.P., I Will never Let You Down and Poison.

Rita has already cemented herself as one of the UK’s most successful pop acts of the decade and shows no signs of slowing down in 2019.

We also have meetings where we discuss current things going on with circle such as upcoming fundraisers or any other business that needs to be discussed.

Some examples of past social meetings include knit and natter, car care at Kwikfit, a DvD evening, hearing dogs for the deaf talk, cocktail evenings, bingo, trips to the theater, Christmas crafts, chocolate parties and much more!

Castle newnham School’s 4SIXTEEn Theatre Company are proud to have been awarded Best Youth Production for Singin’ in the Rain at the nODA East Awards.

The production was performed to sell-out audiences in 2018.

This is the second Castle newnham production to have won this prestigious award, following The Lion King in 2016.

Primary pupils who performed in 4SIXTEEn Theatre Company’s A midsummer night’s Dream was also nominated for the Best Youth Production Award.

UK’s Strongest Man to be put to the test at Flitwick Carnival

Three times winner of the UK’s Strongest man competition, Adrian Smith, will be one of the entertainment highlights at this year’s Flitwick Carnival taking place on Saturday, June 8.

This fun, free event for all the family features a host of exciting entertainment as well as a colourful ‘Animal Kingdom’ themed carnival parade through the town led by Carnival Princess, eight-year-old Freya Pearson.

Adrian, who also came fifth in the World’s Strongest man competition, will put his amazing strength to the test with a show that features a vehicle pull and holding a chair with a lady sitting on it with his teeth.

In the main arena, visitors will also be treated to a breathtaking display from the Xtreme Stunt Team, an exciting motorcycle stunt show and cycle bike display with Trial Des nations GB Gold medal winner, Dan Clark and World Cycle Trials cyclist James

Bedford Junior Aquathlon Robinson Pool Sunday June 9

An Aquathlon is a combined swimming and running event, and is held twice a year in Bedford at Robinson Pools and Fitness and Bedford Park, with children from school years 3- 11 welcome to take part.

There are five age categories; with year 3’s challenged to swim

Puccini and Bizet. Two composers well known and loved for their operas; who hasn’t heard of Puccini’s madame Butterfly, and Bizet’s Carmen? They did write works other than operas, and Bedford Choral Society’s concert on Saturday, June 15, at the Corn Exchange are showcasing three of them, two by Bizet and one by Puccini. What is wonderful about them is that not only do they show the exuberance of youth, but they also both reveal their operatic approach to music, which became so popular both then and now.

They are light and lyrical, even though they are religious.

But their youth is not the only similarity. Each of the works has been discovered in the 20th Century. And two of them, the ‘Te Deum’ by Bizet, and the ‘messa di Gloria’ by Puccini, were written to satisfy academics of their musical competence.

‘Totally Tina’ rocks into it’s 10th Year

Ten years have passed since the UK’s official number one Tina Turner tribute first sprang to life in the vibrant city of Liverpool, but a Lifetime Achievement Award and many other prestigious accolades along the way have earned Justine Riddoch’s ‘Totally Tina’ a deserved top spot in the musical tribute world.

Justine admits she has been observing her beloved muse from the start; constantly honing her impersonation with passion and an unrivalled attention to detail, to deliver the most authentic recreation of the rock and roll Queen’s live performances.

She’s determined the Show will always be known as ‘Simply The Best’, which is particularly fitting in 2019 – the 30th Anniversary of the much-loved song of the same name, released in 1989.

The cast and crew of Totally Tina are pulling out all the stops this year with the promise of a brand new, custom-made performance featuring a whole host of fresh ideas, coupled with the band’s now famous humour.

The Show is designed to make the audience feel that the legendary performer is right back in front of them, strutting her stuff on the most famous legs in show business!

This year’s production is a heady mix of nostalgia and surprise with all the favourite Tina Turner hits, her best duets, much-loved covers and the odd twist in the tale.

Jumping Jack Flash, Honky Tonky Woman, Get Back, It’s Only Rock and Roll and The Bitch is Back have been added to a set which includes Simply The Best, Proud mary, nutbush City Limits and Private Dancer to name a few.

All the songs are enhanced by the customary flourish of sparkling stiletto heels, flamboyant tail feathers, high energy dance routines and musical genius. There’s plenty of audience engagement and postshow ‘meet and greets’ too, making the Show more personal.

In fact, it’s probably the closest thing to a live Tina Turner concert!

Justine, a past winner of cult talent show, Stars In Their Eyes, is known in the business for her enthusiasm and drive, and has been singing professionally for 27 years. She is justifiably proud of her cast and crew who’ve played a huge part in helping her to create the longest running Tina Turner tribute.

Football fun for foundation LOCAL sporting legend norman Cooley (right), cricketer and footballer, has lent his name to an annual “walking football” tournament.

The annual event organised by his family has now raised £7,300+ for the Bedfordshire Tibbs Dementia Foundation and they hope to make it to the £10,000 mark next year.

Held at the home ground of norman’s former team, Bedford Town FC, the tournament is the highlight of the year for the Tibbs Walking Football Club which has been meeting every monday since August 2015. n The day started with the Exhibition match where norman Cooley himself and others with dementia, family carers, friends, volunteers and members of Flitwick Eagles played a tightly fought contest, but the outstanding skill, dexterity and tenacity of the Tibbs FC shone through as Lady of the match ‘no messing with me muriel’ scored two goals and ‘Liverpool Stu’ a goal of inspirational brilliance. n A seven-a-side tournament included the Tibbs own Dementia Divas a formidable presence who played a particularly gritty and feisty game against the eventual winners Rushen n The norman Cooley Challenge Cup, a full 11-a-side football match followed. The Cooley All-Stars, made up of friends

and norman’s sons Alan and Peter, their cousin Jon and his son Sam were unlucky to lose the game 2-1 in what was a very competitive match. Colin merritt put the All-Stars level in the second half after Cople had gone in 1-0 at half time.

The All-Stars struggled against the wind after the restart and sustained Cople pressure paid off with a well-taken second.

The wind dropped in the last 20 minutes and the All-Stars rallied and came close with a handful of chances in front of a vocal crowd cheering them on to the final whistle.

Sarah Russell Chief Executive Officer of the Tibbs Dementia Foundation said: “This footballing day has become an eagerly anticipated annual event in the Tibbs Dementia Foundation calendar.

“It’s a chance for everyone to be involved and enjoy a game of football in a competitively friendly environment, as well as raising funds and awareness and proving that anyone can ‘have a go’ no matter what their physical or cognitive levels of fitness may be. “many thanks to the Cooley family for making this event possible and to Bedford Town FC who kindly gave us use of the ground and full facilities free of charge. “ Also to Russell Shaw from Flitwick FC the Tibbs professional coach who helped to organise the event and ensure all went smoothly on the day, acting as referee and mastermind of the Exhibition game and seven-a-side tournament.”

Defender becomes latest to sign for next season BEDFORD Town Football Club is delighted to announce that Brett Longden has agreed terms to rejoin the club for the coming Evostik League Southern Division One Central season.

The defender, who made 42 appearances for the Eagles in his first season with the club, has also signed a one year contract. This will see him through until the summer of 2020.

Speaking exclusively to www.bedfordeagles.net, manager Jon Taylor said “I’m delighted to have got someone like Brett committed up for another season at the club. He was my manager’s player of the year for last year, and this shows just how highly I value his contribution since he has been with the club.”

Taylor continued “We now have an excellent spine of the team starting to come together, with Callum (Donnelly) and Dan (Walker) having already signed for the coming year. We’re speaking with the other members of last year’s squad about terms for the coming year and also looking at adding new quality to the team, to hopefully take us one step further this year.”
