Chickens and Reindeer!

Well, the chickens are safely abed and roosting whilst the Reindeer are gently awakening from their slumbers.

We, Biggleswade Sandy lions, have thoroughly enjoyed our time throughout the summer being out and about meeting and chatting to people. Thank you for your support throughout our busy season whilst we’ve been at local fetes, raising funds to help us continue supporting the local community. The Flying Chickens proved to be very popular and landed in the basket several times during the season, probably much to everyone’s surprise, most of all the chickens! Now, they are taking a well-deserved rest.

Next out are the reindeer! They need a quick wash and brush up, which will take the eager band of lions a couple of days to bring them back to their usual spruce appearance, and they’ll be ready for action.

They will be working hard throughout December. We are pleased to set out our confirmed Activities for Christmas this year with evening runs around Clifton on

Sandy Twinning Association

The Twinning Association will be having a busy month of October.

We will again be hosting a Polish civic delegation from Skarszewy over Remembrance weekend.

Two couples will be coming from the Leisure and Tourism office in the town and they will take part in formal ceremonies on Remembrance Sunday in both Sandy and St Neots.

The St Neots ceremony is held at the Polish national war graves in the town’s main cemetery.

The four day visit will also include a visit to London, Bletchley Park, which is also important in Polish history as well as local visits to Jordan’s’ Mill and the RSPB. The Association has also started planning for the next Malaunay visit which we expect will take place over bank holiday weekend May 5-7th 2017 and will hopefully involve members of the town

£1.4m worth SG19 ROAD SAFETY GROUP of bikes recovered

AS the traditional motor bike riding season comes to an end, the team behind motorcycle tracking device, BikeTrac, has reported their busiest summer of recoveries since inception, with over 240 machines stolen year to date and over 55 machines recovered in the summer period alone*.

Recovering on average four BikeTrac equipped machines per week during the summer, the team has been kept busy, maintaining an impressive recovery rate of over 90% thanks to the systems technology and the firm’s dedicated 24/7 Secure Operating Centre.

BikeTrac’s Bill Taylor explained, “Naturally summer is our busiest period because more bikes are on the road, but what this summer showed us is that bike theft is rife and thieves are starting to target a wider range of machines.

“While our statistics are unique to what we sell and protect, we’ve seen a trend moving slightly towards smaller machines this summer. We’ve recovered more bikes, but in actual fact the total value of bikes recovered has dropped, mainly down to us recovering smaller, less valuable machines too now.”

hOW disappointing that the final Stakeholder Reference Group Meeting for the first Road Investment Strategy Study – held on 18th October – appears to have come to the conclusion that our section of the A1 does not warrant a full bypass. Apparently, not enough of the boxes as determined by highways england and the Department for Transport - are ticked according to the investigations and research they have done. Apparently, the only major benchmarks considered are those that combine to demonstrate ‘Value for Money’ and these are based solely on such factors as opening up opportunities for growth and improving journey times.

Nothing but platitudes about ‘safety being important’ and ‘reducing congestion’ – which we know generates pollution – were given in response to a specific question asking just how had these factors been considered in arriving at the conclusions. It was pointed out that our stretch of the A1 is dangerous with residents living cheek by jowl to heavy traffic in all weathers with, as an example, just a muddy track for pedestrians walking by the side of the A1 southbound from the Beeston footbridge to New Road.

It appears that the A1 east of england Study has been relegated to a poor second in the wake of the Oxford to Cambridge expressway which dominated most of this joint final meeting in respect of the two Studies. While the route of the A428 from Caxton Gibbet to the A1 with, at last, a proper junction to replace the Black Cat is in the programme – and budget – to be built, no final conclusion on what improvements we might see has yet been reached. It was pointed out that since the Study started, much housebuilding had taken place with even more now planned and in the pipeline but still the amount of traffic passing through Sandy and Beeston does not, apparent-

ly, justify a full bypass. even a partial one does not seem certain although it has been acknowledged that ‘something needs to be done’ by way of local improvements. What these might be has yet to be revealed.

A small comfort is that highways england have been tasked with a further review of our stretch of the A1 to try to increase the ‘Value for Money’ calculations on which their decisions rest. It is to be hoped the full extent of the plans for new housing announced

by Central Bedfordshire Council recently will be reflected in these considerations as a very significant increase in traffic will result from not just the single large development mooted for Tempsford but also from the cumulative effects of the developments in Potton, Sandy and Biggleswade.

While our MP has intimated that he will try to help bring about the small improvements referred to in our last article in the Bulletin, he has said that he intends to let the Road Investment Strategy takes its course. While this may be acceptable if proper consideration is given to safety, congestion, pollution and the sheer danger many of the residents in our area experience every day in their lives next to the A1, it is not acceptable if insufficient ‘Value’ is placed on people’s lives. What are the big issues in Bedfordshire?

A NeW ‘Vital Signs’ report commissioned by the Bedfordshire and Luton Community Foundation (BLCF) has shown the key priorities for our communities revolve around safety, housing and deprivation.

The inaugural report for the county shines a light on community need with residents articulating a range of issues which they feel are challenging the well-being of their area. The report focuses attention on what needs to be done and how it can be achieved.

Findings include the fact that 84% of residents felt that there wasn’t enough affordable housing in Bedfordshire and one in four children in Luton live in poverty.

More encouragingly, 85% of people surveyed would recommend moving to Bedfordshire if a friend was considering it. The report recognises and celebrates the groups and activities already in operation which are responding to the demonstrable local need. however, greater funding is required to continue this valuable work and to support organisations.

Fozia Irfan, Chief executive of BLCF, comments: “The findings of the Vital Signs report provide pause for thought and offer a clear indication of the issues our community is facing. It shines a light on the concerns and fears that require attention and provides an impetus for action.

While wonderful work by a host of community organisations is underway, there is a tremendous need in our area which we have only seen grow in recent years.

Therefore, we want to engage the wider community – individuals and businesses - to work with us and be a part of the solution that answers the call in today’s Vital Signs report. Community philanthropy is important and can change our communities for the better.”

Nick hurd MP, Minister for Civil Society, said: “Vital Signs encourages giving and helps to ensure that donations target the most pressing issues a community is facing. I wish community foundations every success.”

BLCF is a grant making charity which has distributed over £6.2 million since it began in 2001, working with over 600 donors and supporting over 18,000 groups.

Good weather contributed to a huge success

LIGhT drizzle cleared leaving us with a dry and sunny day.

We are hugely thankful to all the people that supported the Country Fayre in any way enabling us to make £5,000 which will be shared between the two charities supported; Jessie’s Fund and the Organ Appeal.

The Country Fayre was opened by Jo Rondel from Jessie’s Fund who spoke about the work of the charity which supports children who have complex needs or serious illness. She explained how music can connect with the children allowing them to express themselves and the world around them through music. The registered charity works throughout the whole UK as well as locally.

Organist Rob Butcher told us about the proposed work needed to guarantee the organ’s future by the overhaul of pipes, leatherwork and electrics. he explained that the console will also be made mobile so that it can be played at various positions in the nave making it easier to accompany a wide variety of services and concerts as well as recitals.

In addition to the outside stalls, games and food stations in the grounds of the

church, there was an exhibition in church of music in and around Biggleswade. There was a display showing the work of Jessie’s Fund and a record of work which has gone into restoring and adding an extra two church bells to their number. The Goldman Sisters show cased their work with music and the way they have delighted audiences

in a wide range of venues throughout the world. A further number of displays completed information relating to music.

Thanks yet again go to Nick Gurney for organising events throughout the arena

including choirs and dancing from church, edward Peake, the Academy, St Andrew’s Schools and Community and harmony Choirs. There was also action from the Sea Cadets. Royal Tournament, Steel Pans, Moon Lighters Choir and Sandy Ukulele who inspired the audience so much so, that there may be new recruits.

Thanks again to Nick’s team of helpers who spent a great deal of time constructing and dismantling stage and sound equipment, working tirelessly throughout the day providing the appropriate amount of sound when needed. Nick was also interviewed on Biggles FM at 8.30 am on the day before – did you hear it?

The Country Fayre committee would like to thank all stall holders, performers, ground staff, catering teams, table carriers, exhibition exhibitors, stewards, raffle ticket sellers and anyone involved in the event. It was their effort that made the day so successful.

Next year 2018, the Country Fayre will be on Saturday 22nd October so please save the date in your diary to make another incredible day.

The role of Lord-Lieutenant’s cadets is to support the LordLieutenant in carrying out her duties and their selection and appointment acknowledges their outstanding contribution to their cadet service and to the community.

BAILey Doggett had seen the support that his family had given to Angela’s small cell ovarian cancer research fund at The eve Appeal, with several items disappearing from his home, destined for this charity. Alongside this, he’d witnessed the enthusiasm of his grandparents at Millers Court,

posed to meet them at the finishing line after enjoying a cuppa at Jordans but the speed in which they completed their task (35 minutes) was not even long enough for the reception party to finish their drink. Needless to say they soon rallied round to give the lads a pat on the back and recapture their return.

The next event for Gynae Cancer Awareness Month will be hosted by Mark Butcher at 22 Poppy Field, Biggleswade between 4pm and 6pm. It’s a cream tea (Adults £2 and Children £1) with many items for sale and every penny going to Angela’s Research Fund.

The end of September is an annual handover of 5p’s which family, friends and some businesses collect throughout the year.

This currently stands at £475 (9,500 x 5 p’s) and has already beaten the previous year’s total of £422.95 as momentum gains.

There they will be competing against the best in the UK. Two computing students from the riverside Cauldwell Campus in Bedford will be taking part: Uways eid, of Luton, was ranked second in the regional competitions for the Network Infrastruture Technicians. he is now studying at university.

The third student off to Birmingham is plumber Jonathan Archer, aged 24, of St Neots.

Jonathan works for Wintle heating in Northampton and having qualified at the Bedford College Plumbing Technology Centre in Kempston, is now undertaking a Foundation Degree in Building Services and Sustainability – with a view to moving up the management ladder.

Jonathan is a third generation plumber who recognises the advantages that higher education via Bedford College can offer. “I enjoy my work but may not want to be working hands-on when I am older. In the meantime I am looking forward to the competition.”

A message about state pensions for all women born in the 1950s

WOMeN Against State Pension Inequality (WASPI) is a national campaign aiming to get justice for women affected by the decision to raise the women’s state pension age from 60 to 66.

These women, who were born in the 1950s, have had their retirement plans shattered because successive Governments failed to inform them of the rise in women’s state pension age in time, in order for them to make alternative plans for their retirement.

Letters to individuals did not start going out until 2009 so women, who had expected to retire at 60, had little or no notice to prepare. Then, to add insult to injury, in 2011 the Government decided to speed up the changes, leaving many with a further 18 months to wait, so they can’t receive their state pension now until they are 66.

The unfair way these changes have been implemented have left many thousands of women both angry and upset and many are now facing huge financial difficulties, often suffering ill health, as they wait to reach the age when they can properly retire. In Bedfordshire alone this has affected 48,000 women.

In 2015, five women decided to fight back and so formed WASPI to campaign against the way the changes have been brought in.

WASPI is NOT opposed to equalising state pension age with men and they are NOT calling for women’s state pension age to return to 60.

What they are demanding is a fair transitional arrangement for women born in the 1950s and most affected by the changes to the pension law, by way of a ‘bridging state pension’ to cover the gap from 60 to when they reach state pension age, that is NOT means tested and with compensation for losses for those who have already reached their state pension age.

There are now over 70,000 WASPI women in over 140 branches united in fighting this injustice. here in Bedfordshire we are a newly formed branch and we are working to ensure that all women that are affected by these changes are aware of WASPI and the work they are doing.

We are also trying to ensure

that all women know where they can find out how these changes will impact on them personally, by requesting a ‘pension statement’ from the DWP. They can do this by either requesting form BR19 to complete and return by post, by

going on-line and accessing www.dwp.gov.uk or calling The Pension Service on 0345 3000 168.

Biggleswade & District Gardening Club

hAIRMAN, Tony Gray, welcomed members back after their summer break, last Wednesday 20th September. Tony introduced the speaker, Susan young, whose lovely garden the members had visited in July. Susan’s talk was entitled ‘A Banquet for Pollinators’. She explained that she had spent many years studying whilst continuing gardening when she had noticed a dramatic falloff in the bees and pollinators in the gardens and countryside. She had been a professional garden designer since 2002 in Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. She had made a study of the insects and as she felt passionately about the decline of bees and pollinators she was now lecturing about the subject to encourage members of the public to grow the right plants to encourage bee and insects and to set aside areas of rough grass and especially nettles which are nectar rich for the pollinators.

Covering all aspects of this subject, it was a fascinating glimpse of how we could change our gardening habits to encourage these threatened insects. After questions, Tony thanked Susan for a most interesting and informative talk.

Tony thanked all for attending and hoped they had enjoyed the evening.

Biggleswade Ivel Evening Townswomen’s Guild

hAIRMAN Chris Davies welcomed members to the meeting on Monday, October 9. A minute silence was observed to mark the death of Pauline Pressland.

The speaker for the evening Gerry Lawrence gave a very interesting and informative talk on the subject of the oak tree. he amazed us with many previously unknown facts about oak trees. Although grown in many other european countries the english oak is considered to be the finest. Studies have shown that the oak is host to the most wildlife, in 2016 one oak tree had 780 different species of bugs and insects; 76 species of lichen; 40 species of fungi as well as being visited by rodents and birds. By using oak dendrochronology, it has been established that some oaks in this country are over 1,000 years old. he was thanked by Pauline Dover.

On Thursday, October 5 a trip was taken to the national arboretum in Staffordshire where Princess Anne performed a dedication ceremony for the Towswomen's Guild memorial. Chris Davies and Ann Taylor were invited to the VIP section where they had afternoon tea and were presented to the Princess Royal a very proud day for them and the guild.

The September walking group went to the RSPB lodge, lunch followed at The yorkshire Grey.

Forthcoming events are the monthly walk meeting at 10.45am on Thursday, November 2 at the church at Old Warden, lunch will follow at Shuttleworth College; Stratton house for the guild anniversary dinner on Thursday, November 16; Worcester Christmas market Friday, December 1; National Carol Service at Coventry Cathedral Tuesday, December 12. Ivel Valley U3A

NN Taylor, Chairman, welcomed the members of the Ivel Valley U3A to their Annual General Meeting on the 10th October. She announced that Brian Tobin had resigned as Vice Chairman and from the committee after many years’ service. In honour of all that he had done, he had been asked to be President to which he had agreed.

Both he and Kay were to be made honorary Life Members and were presented with a certificate.

Brian thanked the members for the honour and said that he was very proud to be the new President.

Ann read out a letter of thanks from St John’s hospice thanking the group for their donation of £200.00 raised from the charity table.

Ann also went on to thank Chris for organising the trip to the National Arboretum saying what a special occasion it had been for both Chris and her as they had been part of the party meeting Princess Anne.

The Arboretum was a very special place with so many memorials that left a lasting impression.

Brian was thanked for organising the last social afternoon which had been a games afternoon and had proved to be great fun with everyone bringing the same games – Triominoes and Rumikub.

Book Group 1 will meet on 7th November at Jean Williams’ house. Book Group 2 met on Friday 13th October at Jean Webb’s house.

The Craft group met at yvonne Crane’s house on 19th October where they covered coat hangers. The Music Group met on Tuesday 17th October at Sally Clements house. The Sunday Lunch Club met at The Five Bells, henlow and the next lunch will be 5th November at 12 noon at the Duncombe Arms, Waresley. The walking group, led by Christine, met At Great Barford for a walk to Blunham.

Members were reminded that the trip to the Worcester Christmas Market on the 1st December will leave at 8.30am and that the money is now due.

The list was available for the Christmas Lunch on Wednesday, 13th December at Roxton Garden Centre at a cost of £13.50.

Closing the meeting Ann handed over to the new President, Brian who opened the Annual General Meeting. Apologies were received and Pat Warren, Secretary, read the minutes from the Annual General Meeting held on 11th October 2016.

There were no matters arising. Sally Clements gave the Treasurer’s report. The accounts had been audited and everything was fine. The Chairman gave her report thanking the committee and the members for all their hard work and support.

There was no election as the committee were happy to remain in place with the additional of Josie Tansy to replace Brian. The new Vice Chairman will be Anne Jones.

The members agreed this en bloc. There being no other business Brian closed the meeting and the members then enjoyed refreshments with cakes provided by the committee.

he Biggleswade Branch of the Royal Artillery Association held a Branch Meeting on 4th October 2017. The Chairman recited The Royal Artillery Prayer, mention was made of eileen Wells who has sadly passed away.

Members were reminded about The Armistice Day Ceremony which will take place on Saturday 11th November 2017 in the Market Square at 10.50 and the Remembrance Day Parade parade will take place on Sunday 12th November 2017, with the parade gathering at 10.15 to March off at 10.25. The wreath will be laid by Dave Knight.

eeTING held Thursday 28th September 2017.

The meeting was as usual very well attended.

Our Chairman Pat Whitworth welcomed everyone and read out notices. We were all delighted when Pat welcomed three new visitors.

Jane ellis was our demonstrator for the evening and her theme was ‘Box of Delights’. Our first delight was a box of (what else) chocolates. Cool greens and white represented mint chocolate with a little touch of orange cream and blackcurrant fondant. Next came the delights of pottering in the garden, a rambling display representing a pretty country garden. Tropical delights were next, palms, sunscorched greenery and birds of paradise boldly peering through the display. We could feel the heat.

The traditional flavour of rose and lemon Turkish delight was replaced with the unusual selection of apricot and almond, no need to say the display looked good enough to eat.

Delights of the Orient were next up, a striking blast of white resembling a waving exotic meadow.

Jane finished with a delight we are all familiar with, the joy of playing with flowers, an explosion of delicate pastel colours, pretty greenery and a variety of lovely blooms.

Sue Smith gave the vote of thanks and the evening concluded with a raffle for the flower arrangements, the usual refreshments and chat.

All Saints’ Day (1st November) is a very special day for me. This festival of the church when we celebrate all God’s saints, living and departed, was the dedication of two churches that have played an important part in my life. I grew up worshipping at All Saints’, ealing Common which was built as a memorial to Spencer Perceval the Prime Minister who was assassinated in 1812. Later I was Vicar of All Saints’, Rotherham, a wonderful sixteenth century minster church in the centre of the town. At both places the marking of All Saints’ Day was special, especially the joyful singing of ‘For all the Saints’.

For all the saints who from their labours rest, Who Thee by faith before the world confess, Thy name, O Jesus, be forever blest, Alleluia! Alleluia!

HELP STAMP OUT HATE CRIME

“I’ve been delighted to lend my support to National hate Crime Awareness Week (14 – 21 October) led by the charity, Stop hate UK. “I have been only too pleased to quite literally sign up to Bedfordshire Police’s campaign, in which the public put their names to campaign posters, signing to state clearly that there is no place for prejudice in this county as it can be devastating to be picked on because of your faith, race, gender, sexuality or as a result of a disability.

“Sadly, hate Crime is one of easiest crimes to commit because it can be as simple as shouting foul abuse. however, it can cause a deep wound that not only terrifies the victim, but divides and builds walls of suspicion between communities.

“As PCC, I’m delighted to confirm that I encounter examples, almost daily, of our communities living in a tolerant and harmonious way together. Unfortunately, there is a small minority

ReCeNTLy I was delighted to meet several constituents who are part of the International Citizen Service – a UK Government programme which brings together young people from the UK to volunteer in partnership with young people from developing countries in some of the poorest communities in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

It is easy to think that the saints are the great and the good holy people down the ages; that the saints are the twelve apostles and others canonised by the church. They are important, not least as compelling examples of faithfulness to God. however, they are not the whole story for God’s saints are all those, living and departed, through whom the light of Christ shines. They are those who are loved

by God and know God’s love in their lives. St Paul writing to the church in Rome writes, To all in Rome, who are loved by God and called to be saints.

This All Saints’ Day let us celebrate the light in other people, and ask that God’s light may shine through us. across Bedfordshire, as well as the rest of the UK, to teach pupils the story of Anne Frank and her murder in a Nazi death camp and demonstrate through Anne’s tragedy how devastating hate directed towards a single group can become.

“I decided to fund the charity’s work because hate crime is a problem not just in our county, but nationally. young people are our future and we pass the baton on to them to change the world – which is why it is so important they learn of Anne Frank and the message to challenge prejudice.

“During hate Crime Awareness Week, members of my office and representatives of Bedfordshire Police were privileged to hear from eva Clarke, who was born in a concentration camp during World War Two. The camps claimed most of her family and she was never able to meet her father as he was murdered before she was born. hate crime doesn’t just cause offence, it robs people of the chance of a life away from fear. It is a battle we must win, but we need everyone in Bedfordshire to challenge prejudice all day, every day until we do.

Since it started in 2011, ICS has enabled over 15,000 young people from the UK to volunteer in projects around the world, and by 2018 will have created a global community of more than 35,000 active citizens – a real lasting legacy.

The recent group from Bedfordshire includes Adam & Jianvario who volunteered in Ghana working to help disabled people with trade skills and education; Izzy who went to el Salvador, working with young people and drama; Joshua worked in Kenya working with local entrepreneurs; Katie was in Lesotho working with young people through sport; Poppy was in India supporting health initiatives; and Verity volunteered in Nepal, for women’s health education.

£10,000 grant from sporting legend

A CheQUe for £10,000 to support disabled sports was handed over at the Bedford International Athletic Stadium from a legacy left by a sporting legend in Bedford.

Professor Margaret Whitehead, President of Bedford Physical education Old Students Association presented the money to Bedford and County Athletic Club to establish a new section for disabled people of all ages. The grant was awarded from the eileen Alexander Legacy Fund and will be specifically used to purchase three racing wheelchairs and associated equipment. Receiving the cheque was 12year-old Varun Bandi from Flitwick.

Varun has helped promote the annual Wheelchair Legacy Relay held at the Bedford International Athletic Stadium. The sixth was held on Sunday 8th October and raising further funds to add to the £30,000 already collected for the development of sport for young disabled people.

The Push4it event attracted 25 teams, each tackling a 4 x 50 metre relay course, as well as nearly 20 individuals racing over one lap of the track (400 metres). At the end of the day which had witnessed some fast times, the overall winners were Kachow (Bedford Modern School) in a time of 1min 16 secs, with three teams finishing in the same time of 1min 21 secs were Biggleswade Air Cadets, teams 1 and 2 and hot Wheels (Bedford Modern School) The first family team to finish were Arriba (1 min. 26 secs.), the senior team, all over 65, were Ivel Rotators in 1min. 52 secs, followed

by Sandy Paralytics, 2 mins 12 secs.

In your garden – NOVEMBER

AS I write this it is the middle of October and the temperature is incredibly expected to rise to 21 degrees C. Although, something of an aberration this unseasonal weather highlights the absolute folly of slavishly following a calendar to perform gardening tasks.

That is to say, one should always garden as conditions permit rather than be dictated or influenced by the time of the year. I heard someone in the week saying that he would be cutting his extensive lawn just one more time before the end of the year. Such a statement is crazy as between now and the end of December, just as long as we don’t get too many frosts, everything in the garden in general but lawns in particular will continue to grow.

Leave a lawn for that amount of time and it will be unsightly but worse, it will allow weeds to prosper. Regular mowing, once every two weeks minimum and not too short is the very best way of maintaining a lawn as it prevents weeds from flowering and as I have mentioned before, remember the wisdom of the farming adage ‘one year in seed, seven years in weed!’.

That said, if you have a petrol mower and you simply put it away in the shed until the end of March, you run the risk of the fuel inside losing its ‘flashpoint’, in short, its flammability. The only thing to do then, is to thoroughly drain the engine, refuel and all should be well but rather than endure this palaver, help is at hand with a new product: Aspen.

Aspen is an alkylate petrol which has a

lifespan 10 times as long as that of regular fuel which makes it an excellent choice for garden equipment at this time of the year. What’s more, as a cleaner alternative to petrol it actually has a less pungent odour. Four local charities share a £50k donation

FOUR Bedfordshire based charities were the lucky recipients of £50,000, which was part of a ‘£3m Give Away’ by english Freemasons to celebrate their 300th Birthday.

The Bedfordshire and Northants Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, received £25,000. Dr Kay Taylor (Chair of the Trustees) told us: “On behalf of all of us who use the Centre I would like to thank Bedfordshire Freemasons for their generous support. We will use this incredible donation to upgrade our hydrotherapy pool that enables exercise and increased mobility to many of our clients.”

The elisabeth Curtis Riding Centre for the Disabled received £15,000. Victoria Liston (Chair of the charity) told us: “We will use the £15,000 to buy anther two ponies, additional tack, renew/repair the fencing around our paddocks and some additional safety equipment. This generous donation from the Masons will help to keep the smiles on many young people who face difficult challenges.”

Stephen Murphy the Search Manager at The Midshires Search and Rescue Organisation, who received £6,000 told us: “We operate 24/7, 365 days a year, so we need to be prepared for all types of weather. The £6,000 given to us by Beds Freemasons will be used to purchase water safety clothing and equipment.”

Paula Grayson (Chair of the Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity) told us: “The £4,000 we received from the Freemasons, will help fund our ‘Bridge Project’. This project helps people in Luton who have had support or treatment for alcohol and/or drug use to integrate back into society”.

The Charity within Bedfordshire that received the most votes was the Bedfordshire and Northants Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, who received £25,000. Celebrating county’s foster carers

A CeLeBRATION and awards event has taken place to highlight the work and achievements of Central Bedfordshire Council’s foster carers.

The Celebration of Fostering event was held at Woburn Safari Park on Sunday, 24 September and saw 70 foster carers and their families come together with council staff and elected members to celebrate the valuable work they do.

Long-service awards were presented to 15 foster carers and couples who have clocked up an amazing 120 years’ service between them.

There were also five individual awards handed out to those who have gone above and beyond for the children they have welcomed into their homes.

SAFeGUARDING professionals joined together to attend the first-ever Bedfordshire Against CSe conference on child sexual exploitation which particularly focused on how to protect young people from online grooming.

The one-day conference was an initiative between Bedford Borough Council, Luton Borough Council, Central Bedfordshire Council, Bedfordshire Police and Bedford Borough, Central Bedfordshire and Luton Safeguarding Children’s Boards – as part of the ongoing county-wide campaign ‘The More you Know, The More you See’, which launched in 2015.

Detective Superintendent Nick Bellingham, from the Bedfordshire Police Public Protection Unit, said: “Child sexual exploitation is a very real issue and it’s happening in Bedfordshire. It’s important that we work together to help tackle it and events such as this are a fantastic way of raising awareness and educating each other so that we can better protect the young people of Bedfordshire.

Biggleswade History Society

REMEMBER NOVEMBER

NOveMBeR – a month of shortening days and lengthening nights, mists and chills, falling leaves and the prospect of a long winter ahead – November is also a time of remembrance.

The first day of November is All Saints or All hallows Day in the Christian calendar, a day for remembering the Christian saints and martyrs, followed by All Souls Day on 2 November, when observing Christians typically remember deceased friends and relatives. In some countries it is known as ‘The Day of the Dead’ but beliefs and practices associated with it vary widely among churches and denominations. however, the last night of October, the night before All hallows, is All hallows eve – now universally known as halloween. For most people it has lost its religious significance and the way in which it is celebrated owes more to an earlier pagan Celtic festival marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of the ‘dark’ half of the year, a dangerous time when the boundary between this world and the ‘other world’ became blurred and restless spirits wandered the earth. Over the centuries it has evolved as a secular folk tradition, taking in superstitions about witchcraft, the medieval ‘souling’ practice of begging for food or ‘soul cakes’ in return for saying prayers for the dead, wassailing at apple harvest time, the ‘Jack o’ Lantern’ turnip lanterns to ward off evil spirits which went with immigrants to America and came back to us as pumpkins, and the gothic ghost and horror stories of more recent times.

Next, we are told to ‘Remember, remember the Fifth of November, gunpowder treason and plot. I know of no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot.’ each year on 5 November 1. 55 attended the Society’s meeting at Trinity Methodist Church on 2 October for a talk by local artist Carolyn Blake about her brain-child, the Story in Stone mosaic project for the market towns of Biggleswade, Sandy and Potton. Carolyn worked for 30 years as a teacher of art and has in recent years produced mosaics for St Peter’s church in Biggleswade. The Story in Stone is funded by the Central Bedfordshire Council as part of their Market Towns Regeneration Scheme, and aims to engender a sense of pride in the rich history of the three towns whilst visually enhancing the town centres. The artist commissioned to design and produce the mosaics, Oliver Budd, had previously made the large mosaic now seen in Sainsbury’s car park in Biggleswade. Community involvement is very important to this project and there has been input from three history societies, including our own. Also, Carolyn has supervised public workshops and workshops in schools and sheltered housing, involving local children and residents in making sections of mosaic which are then

we remember the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators were foiled in their attempt to blow up the houses of Parliament together with King James I and his entire government. Who says terrorism is a modern phenomenon?

Finally, we come to Armistice Day when we stop for two minutes of silence at 11.00am to remember the cease-fire at that exact time on 11 November 1918, marking the end of the First World War on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Biggleswade’s Remembrance Sunday service and parade at the War Memorial on the Market Square is a solemn commemoration of the town’s war dead of two world wars and is always very well attended. It

incorporated into Oliver’s work. We learned about the history of the art form and how the mosaics are made and were able to examine some of the materials used. The second series of mosaics is due to appear on walls in the towns in November, and the final series in February next year.

2. On 3 October the editor gave a talk in the Chapter house of St Andrew’s Church for the Anglican Guild. The talk told the history of Biggleswade Town Centre and Market Square and included stories associated with that part of the town. The Society thanks the members of the Guild for their kind donation.

3. 89 visitors attended the Society’s free historical story-telling walks in Shortmead Street on 10 September, and on 5 October the Society’s editor attended the Methodist Thursday Lunch at Trinity Methodist Church, afterwards giving a talk based on the walks, telling the history of Shortmead Street and including stories associated with the area.

Many at this event will also remember that the war memorial used to stand in the road in front of Whiteman’s building (now the Courtyard Centre) on the corner of high Street and Shortmead Street from its installation in 1921 until it was moved to its present position on the Market Square in 1977.

Older residents will also remember that the bugler used to stand on the canopy of the Crown hotel (shown in the photograph of circa 1900) to sound the Last Post on Remembrance Day – until the canopy was hit by a heavy lorry and destroyed in the 1950s. The Society has no photograph of the bugler standing there but would very much like to see one. If any reader has one please contact us.

SITTING on the half way line as I do gives me a complete overview of the whole team and whilst George Bailey is the stand out hero, you have to admire the determination and work rate of the whole team.

Farnborough, who I am reliably informed have never played Biggleswade Town before certainly not at the Langford Road, came out of the blocks faster than the Waders. A series of miss-passes and mistakes certainly gave Farnborough the edge.

Liam Gooch in goal for the home side was in irresistible form cutting out numerous crosses, high or low as the visitors forwards, Nic Cardini, Jake evans and Kieron Forbes consistently got to the bye line. The Waders created even less at the other end with no worthwhile attempts on the target. On 42 and against the run of play, Connor hall found rampaging Robbie Parker who in turn found the unmarked George Bailey free on the left. One, two paces forward and Bailey with a shot past the keeper.

Different game after the break, not party very often to mid-way team talks obviously Manager Nunn and Coach Bully Adams worked some magic.

Pushing a higher line the Waders came into the game with a threatening poise.

The last real attempt by Farnborough had Gooch beaten but it was not to be Forbes's afternoon as the ball smacked the post. hAVING read the report posted by Arlesey, they blame their lack of penetration on our premier division defence. Not that we dominated and controlled the game start to finish and

Trying to clear and I think the majority of the crowd thought it had not crossed the line when it was hooked away, but the sharp eyed linesman Gavin Jolley indicated a goal.

Out for the second 45, Kettering pushed up a gear. The Kettering supporters now at the easterly end of the ground making even more noise trying their best to distract Gooch. To no avail as the Kettering front men could not get a clear sight at goal. Frustrating the visitors, Biggleswade showed real steel to deny what the boys in red had come for. 3 points.

NeVeR having been to Kempston football club I was pleasantly surprised at the new stadium and facilities, a

ground to be proud of with no hesitation to repeat the visit.

The game, an opportunity to include squad players for game time, went as planned. The Waders from the off were aggressive and bossing the game. Jack Bowen back after a lengthy lay off through injury got the break through on 9 with a trade mark, flick of the head, and if you know Jack not a hair out of place.

The pace eased as Biggleswade contained and retained the lead.

Rovers were not without making their mark on this game bringing out the best in Liam Gooch as he dived to his right full length to push the ball away.

Biggleswade looked the more likely spending the majority of time in opposition territory. But, as the clock ran down the slim advantage was all the boys in green could take in for the half time orange.

Back after the break, Biggleswade stepped up a gear to make sure we all went home on time. Firstly Graeme Montgomery robbing the ball from a defender on 53 lobbed the keeper from 30metres. 2 minutes more and Dan Jarvis is capitalising on a right old mix up to make three. Game secure, probably but only maybe as super sub Jake Newman scored with his first touch of the ball on 63. Smelling a chance Kempston pushed on and created .

Shooting boots would have paid more dividends as shots rained in the ball always high when it seemed easier to score. Jack Bowen again on 71 ended the resistance despite a noisy home crowd doing their best to encourage.

Double victory in prototype debut!

BeN Tuck made his endurance prototype racing debut in impressive style at the weekend by taking pole position and double lights-to-flag victories with his co-drivers Andreas Laskaratos and Rik Breukers.

After a late entry, the Sandy based 20 year-old competed in the Creventic 24hr Prototype endurance series at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit deep in the Belgian Ardennes forest at the weekend. In typically changeable conditions, Ben took to the track in two five hour races from the front after team mate Rik Breukers bagged a comfortable pole position for the three man crew.

At the wheel of Ginetta’s impressive prototype offering – the G57, in the top P2 class, for factory outfit Simpson Motorsport, Ben led the field in Race 1 from the first lap and pulled out an ever increasing lead. In varying wet and drying conditions, Ben lapped the #3 machine at top pace setting fastest laps one after another until, at the end of his 1 hr 40 minute stint, he had put the team three laps in front of the nearest contender.

From then on his team mates were able to hold that lead until the finish taking a dominant victory for the team. A jubilant Ben exclaimed: “The conditions were tricky at times but the guys had the car set pretty much perfect. I quickly got into the rhythm and from the start it was just a question of just being smooth and consistent to build the lead for the team.”

Race 2 was conducted under similar conditions, and with

the same driver order. In much the same display of dominant driving, Ben stormed off at the head of the field from the start and was not troubled for his entire two hour stint, repeatedly setting fastest laps as the track dried enough for slick tyres to be put on. By the end of his shift, Ben had built another three lap lead. his team mates then controlled the race to bring home the car home for another win. Across the weekend the trio had stormed to truly emphatic victory, setting pole position, two fastest laps, two overall race wins and two P2 Class wins.

“It’s been a dream weekend,” said Ben. “Rik and Andreas were superb, and I think we worked together well, helping each other over the weekend. The team were brilliant too and the car didn’t miss a beat the whole time. It’s tricky to get set up for Spa because of the changeable conditions but the G57 was great, it really gave me lots of confidence to push and the lap times just came. Spa is one of my favourite circuits, I've been here three times now and have come away with a two outright wins, three class wins, a second place, an unofficial lap record and an official lap record."

out & about Alice in the Cuckoo’s Nest Central Bedfordshire libraries are delighted to welcome back the professional and highly innovative Librarian Theatre with their new production, Alice in the Cuckoo’s Nest.

The play, written by Tom Cuthbertson, is inspired by Lewis Carroll’s classic novel Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and explores the theme of psychosis in the world of Alice’s library.

This highly physical production will have a dynamic cast of four portraying all of the characters, and a minimal set design allowing the show to be performed among the library bookshelves.

As with all Librarian Theatre productions this play is familyfriendly. however it is not a children’s show and will explore adult themes of mental health.
