Volunteers Wanted

The Royal British Legion is currently recruiting for volunteer caseworkers across Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire. Case workers play a vital role in enabling the Legion to deliver our Welfare services, and are often the only person who will meet with our beneficiaries face to face.

The role involves visiting Service personnel, reservists, veterans and their families in their home, and completing our application for assistance. Case workers also write a narrative report and complete an outcome star covering six areas of need; Finances, Well-being, Health, Housing, Activities and Social Life.

After completing their report, case workers make recommendations to a paid member of staff, a Case Officer, as to what kind of assistance may be required.

This can include financial grants, referrals to internal specialists (debts, benefits, War Pension/Armed Forced Compensation Scheme, mental health, independent living, criminal justice etc.), referral to external and statutory services and referrals to internal services (break centres, care homes, adventure breaks etc.).

After a volunteer is finished with a case, they are able see all the actions taken with a case through our online Case Management System (CMS).

Full training is provided, and expenses are covered, including travel up to 45p per mile. All of our volunteer caseworkers are DBS checked.

We are looking to recruit people with good social skills, who are able to drive to visit the clients’ homes, and who are comfortable using a computer. If you are interested in the role, or would like some more information, please contact us on 0333 011 4480 or VolCoordSEM@britishlegion.org.uk

The name Cockchafer means ‘Big Beetle’ in Old English! Not hugely original, I would observe! Vera celebrates 90th birthday POPULAR Milton Ernest pensioner Vera Heath celebrated her 90th birthday with a party in the village hall early last month . There were lots of sandwiches and cakes for the guests and it wouldn’t have been a family celebration without some famous homemade sausage rolls. And, knowing how popular they were, Vera made 250 of them for her big day.

“I know people like them,” she said. “So I thought I should make them myself from my own recipe rather than buy them in. I’m glad they went down well.”

A regular entrant in the annual fete, Vera is well known in the neighbourhood for her baking. Her fruit pies are wonderful but her sausage rolls are something else. And, all being well, she’ll be making more for this year’s event on June 30. She’s also won prizes at the fete for a rose that’s been in her family for more than 60 years.

“You’ve got to cook if you have a big family,” she said and Vera had six children – three boys and three girls, all christened with names that began with the letter ‘R’. Two sons and two daughters were present at the party along with three grandchildren and one great grandchild as well as other relatives and friends.

There were also three vicars at the do as well as a former High Sheriff of the county.

Vera was born in London, brought up in Great Barford and Ashwell and, before she moved to Marsh Lane in Milton Ernest nearly 30 years ago, she lived in Goldington.

A good time was had by all.

Fete to start with Grand Parade 2018 FE TE NE

MEMBERS of the Milton Ernest branch of the Women’s Institute will open the village fete on June 30 as part of their centenary celebrations.

Fifteen ladies will parade around the green in suffragette costume while the Bedford Town Band plays a rousing march.

The theme of the fete is Suffragettes to mark 100 years since women got the vote.

Youngsters in the Fancy Dress competition will join the WI and organiser Jean Coplin hopes that any stall holders and visitors who come in costume will take part too.

Meet at the church for a 2pm start.

The programme for the big day has been printed and it will be delivered to every household in the village in the middle of the month.

Details of the opening, the brass band, the school performance, the martial arts demonstration, the horticultural show, the races

and tug of war will be featured. The regular stall holders will be on duty.

They’ll be appealing for cakes, bottles, sweets etc in the countdown.

The programmes will contain loose raffle tickets which organisers hope residents will support as a means of covering costs.

Prizes this year include 500 litres of oil that can be passed on for cash, £100 and vouchers for Hazel Kaye, Sporting Targets and VesuviO among others. Tickets will be on sale on the day and at the garden centre over the weekend of June 23 and 24.

Details of classes and how and when to enter the annual show in the church will also be in the programme.

Enthusiastic villagers will be exhibiting flowers, vegetables, baking, arts and crafts and photography in both adult and children’s classes. Why not have a go? Milton Ernest Garden Centre will be providing vouchers as prizes as they have done for many years. Twelve cups are on offer. (Last year’s winners need to make sure their trophies are returned in plenty of time).

It all promises to be a great day out. Results and pictures from the fete will appear on the village hall notice board.

Busy August at Village Hall NO new bookings will be taken for Milton Ernest Village Hall while it is being decorated in August. Contractors have been appointed to spruce up the venue during the summer holidays and get it so that it’s ready at the latest by the time the school goes back.

Some activities stop in August anyway.

But some, like the Whist Drive, would require a bomb to drop before not having their Wednesday evening game of cards; so organisers are going to work out a way that they can carry on.

They’ve been playing in the hall since it opened in 1959 and one of the current organisers was present at the very first one.

At the annual meeting of the Trust that manages the hall, the chairman, Neil Roy, announced that hire charges had not gone up since 2010 and that the venue was very good value.

Bookings were down, mainly because of a

drop in the number of children’s parties; but there was still an overall surplus for the year ended December 31, 2017 of more than £3,000. Treasurer David Purser had once again secured a reduction in charges for gas, electricity and rates and was congratulated for his expertise in these matters.

As required, the management committee all resigned but were then given a vote of confidence en bloc for the next year.

Any village organisation that regularly uses the hall is entitled to place a representative on the general committee and one issue that was raised by a user group was that of storage which is a regular concern.

Members agreed a new shed cum garage was needed to hold bulky items and the go ahead to get it was given.

PARISH COUNCIL REPORT THE latest meeting of Milton Ernest Parish Council was held on Thursday 26th April 2018 at 8.00pm in the Village Hall. Present: Cllrs Dilley, Snowball, Whiteside, the Clerk (Sue Bottoms) and six members of the public.

Planning: New applications: 18/00807/FUL 41 Rushden Road, MK44 1RU. Erection of “Lauralu” lightweight demountable building to form vehicle preparation bay to existing vehicle/ refurbishment site.

Whilst the parish council did not object to the application it agreed to question whether neighbours might have a problem with the choice of the colour.

The group had considered the most effective way to manage any future growth of the site.

One option was to re-route the A6, however, the consultants had estimated that up to 150 homes would need to be built to make it financially viable to a developer. This was well in excess of the proposed 25-50 maximum.

The NDP Group now needed to meet to discuss the report and agree action. The Group is still awaiting the outcome of the latest consultation on the Local Plan. The development of Twinwoods still remains a possibility and should it go ahead, the Group would want assurances that the building of a by-pass was undertaken before any development.

Traffic Management Working Group: Cllr Dilley said that following the recent article in The Villager, a number of responses had been received. There had been widespread support for 20mph across the village excepting the A6. The majority had been in favour of a chicane on Radwell Road near the entrance to the playing fields. This option had been put to Bedford Borough Council last year but was not progressed through a lack of available funds.

It was agreed that Cllr Dilley should attempt to contact Cllr McMurdo and Andrew Prigmore of Bedford Borough Council to start the process of getting action on both these matters. Any future development in the village

attracting CIL funding could potentially be directed in support. Cllr Dilley noted that Speedwatch had been undertaken in the village with positive results. Sincere thanks must be given to the volunteers carrying it out.

More volunteers would be welcome although it was appreciated that the application process may be putting some off. He would ask Bedfordshire Police to review the content of the application form, which some feel particularly intrusive and which appears to have been borrowed from another process.

The Clerk would put the minutes of the latest meeting of the Traffic Management Working Group on the website.

New Village Welfare Issues: Grass Cutting - Riverside Meadow: It was agreed that the Clerk should contact Warners and remind them to cut the paths wider at the river side, near the picnic benches and lifesaver ring, to help stop the growth of giant hogweed.

Shoyswell: Agreed that this should be cut in June, Warners would need to be reminded.

Damaged bin in Radwell Road: It was agreed to allow Bedford Borough Council to replace this at a cost of £400.

The Clerk would contact the borough council and she would revise the asset register to reflect the purchase of a replacement.

Finance: Decision: to consider the grant application for All Saints and agree action: It was agreed to give a grant of £900 towards maintenance of the church clock and a further £250 to pay the cost of one edition of The Villager. The cheque would be paid at the next meeting.

Reports by Representatives: NDP Steering Group: Cllr Dilley reported that the final report (the site assessment) had been received from the consultants AECom. This was now being paid for directly from central government. The current grant funding will be returned to Locality and re-

Looking back to… July 2008 IN May 2008 The Villager ran an advert asking for a new correspondent to take over from Sarah Tolley – and I answered that advert, never thinking for a minute that I would still be doing it 10 years later!

It’s been an interesting “job” and I never know what’s coming my way each month.

Mostly it’s good news or things that are happening in the village but occasionally it’s sad to report when

somebody has passed away.

The best bits? When I receive lots of e-mails with items to appear in the next month’s edition. The worst bits? When I look at the calendar and realise it’s the 18th of the month (deadline date) and I haven’t started preparing my articles for Martin to print – then it’s panic stations!!

Although I took over at the end of May 2008, my first proper edition would have

She entertained us with many readings of poetry and wry, often laugh out loud jokes, and stories. Many struck a chord with us all! We know which ones I think!

entertained every third Thursday of the month by good speakers and lively conversation, please feel free to visit. You will be very welcome at our next meeting in June which is all about Bedfordshire churches and does not involve religion, as we are strictly a non-religious, non-political organisation.

On May 13th we had an interactive bible story about Jesus and the children. A crowd of (mainly!) volunteer adults gathered round Jesus (brilliantly acted by Ben) and a group of children stood behind them.

The children couldn't see Jesus – even worse, the disciples told them to go away because Jesus was 'too busy for children'! Happily Jesus gave the disciples a telling off, welcomed the children and gave them a few high-fives.

Okay, it was an imaginative retelling of the story, but it conveyed very well the original bible story where Jesus welcomes the children and encourages the adults to have a more child-like and trusting approach to God. The story was very appropriate as that day was also the baptism of Mabel Grace Crawley, seen below with her mum and dad, brother, sister and godparents. A short talk from Rev Peter and songs and hymns from our music group made for a lovely service.

Our next Sunday 2gether will be on June 10th. If you've thought of coming along but never quite made it, why not join us? You'll be made very welcome and there really is something for all ages.

Churchyard footpath closure St Peter’s Pavenham – the Church drive: further information re temporary closure of footpath through the Churchyard Further to my earlier article on this (November/ December 2017), we now have all the necessary permissions from the Diocese and the Local Authority to proceed with the digging-up and re-laying of the tarmac on the Church drive, but we ‘lost our place in the queue’ concerning the contractor/ sub-contractors and the necessary components (new handrail, new gates).

We are now assured that the various components of the essential maintenance works are logically scheduled, and I’m able to advise that the footpath running through the churchyard, from Church Lane through to the Bury, is likely to be closed for most of the month of July.

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience that this may cause, but the surface of the drive is now

seriously breaking-up and posing serious hazards for all users.

The path/drive will be closed and blocked-off by the contractor’s fencing etc. for some 3-4 weeks. It will, of course, still be possible to access the church & graveyard via the footpath from the top of The Bury, but this will be both the way ‘in’ as well as the way ‘out’ during the closure.

During this time, access for replacing/installing headstones will be restricted, and I will notify local Funeral Directors and Stonemasons to this effect.

Once again, our apologies for any disruption that this may cause – once the drive resurfacing has been finished, it is likely to be at least 20 years before any similar disturbance will incurred.

BEDFORD BOROUGH REPORT

by Cllr Pat Olney Bedford Borough Local Plan 2035.

Unfortunately the consultation of the Borough Local Plan 3035 that ended in March 2035 showed that the Colworth Garden Village could not be delivered at the present time.

The Village would have delivered 2,500 houses up to 2035 with a further 2,000 beyond that date. It would have delivered a new access to both the Colworth Business Park and Santa Pod to take the traffic away from the rural roads and Sharnbrook Village, a railway station to take traffic from the A6 and high quality employment land.

The success of the scheme relied on agreement between the site promotor and the operator of Santa Pod to enable appropriate noise mitigation measures to be put into place.

After extensive negotiation the operator of Santa Pod does not support the proposal and has not entered into an agreement with the promoter of Colworth Garden Village.

This means that this 2035 Local Plan is not sound and could not be progressed.

So – moving forward, officers will review the evidence base.

They are considering the possibility of changing the timescale which means number of dwellings required would be reduced.

Other options are being considered as well.

The priority is to get a “sound” plan, a plan for delivering growth. This is the best way to ensure continuing the delivery of the homes that are needed, to protect communities and the countryside from speculative development. It also enables those groups preparing Neighbourhood Development Plans to make progress.

The timescale for the second local plan Regulation 19 is the 6 weeks consultation to start in September 2018 and to submit the Local Plan for Independent examination before the end of December 2018.

A development Plan Is essential, without a Borough wide plan that manages the growth then the borough will have no plan for growth. Planning applications if refused and developers appeal then the inspector will say we have no plan for growth and then allow the appeal.

PAVENHAM WOMEN’S BOOK GROUP

Strange Weather in Tokyo

by Hiromui Kawakami, translated by Allison Markin Powell THIS month’s book was loved by some of us but read with a bit of uncertainty by others.

Whereas some of us found Strange Weather in Tokyo one of the most poignant, enchanting, tender love stories they have read for a long time, others wondered if it is a bit pretentious, arty and rather slow.

We all agreed that the book is slow but some of us felt it leisurely meandered through the story. The quality of the translation was questioned and so we Googled Allison Markin Powell, the translator, and found that her translation was nominated for 2014 independent foreign fiction prize.

As this novel slowly unfurls the deep feelings the two main characters have for each other grow. The main setting for the story is a bar in Tokyo in which Tsukiko and Sensei regularly meet to eat and drink, although on occasion they venture outside the city. We learn quite a lot about Japanese food and drink - which sounds delicious – as well as Japanese culture. The book is skillfully simple while dealing with complex issues and emotions. It captures the gentleness of a relationship between two people who share their growing love in spite of the large difference in their ages - 30 years.

In a short scene the two characters write a haiku that is very moving. (According to the Internet ‘a Haiku is more than a type of poem; it is a way of looking at the physical world and seeing something deeper, like the very nature of existence’.)

As previously mentioned very little actually happens in the book and it is quite slow moving, so if you are looking for adventure and excitement then this book might not be for you. But if you are looking for an insight into the lives of two people who slowly fall in love with each other, their separate internal worlds and the beauty of Japan, then this is for you.

The book is easy to read and is not long – less than 200 pages which is unusual for us and made a welcome change.

It is a beautiful, special book that some if us will remember for a long time, and keep on our shelves. For others it will not have a lasting impact but no-one was sorry that they had read it.

I trust you not to turn to the back page after reading what I write next, or it might be a spoiler, but the last line made me cry.

Conversations for the Curious Is the World Becoming a Better Place?

THE Harvard University cognitive psychologist Steven Pinker has published a book Enlightenment Now, the Case for Reason, Science, Humanism and Progress. In it he presents a mass of data which shows that good things such as life expectancy, health, human rights, literacy and income are increasing whilst the bad things such as war deaths, violence, crime, poverty and disease are declining. He dismisses the despair and pessimism which he claims is propagated by, for instance, politicians and the church. He believes there is currently an intellectual war on science which is damaging the progress of research and restricting human advancement.

It’s hard to argue with his data, some of which is quite dramatic. The proportion of the world’s population living in absolute poverty has decreased from 84% in 1820 to 10% today. Life expectancy average for the world was 30 years in 1760 and is now 65 years and is forecast to reach 70 years by 2020.

So we have done well but is our luck about to run out?

Some of the benefits which have been achieved could shortly result in new problems. Increasing life expectancy is creating an alarming increase in world population. Increasing wealth indirectly results in increasing environmental damage. Pinker does mention climate change specifically but only as an exception to a positive narrative. There’s no question that the World has made great strides in the past but will the future be equally rosy?

A happy occasion for the Fennah family on May 20th when baby Christopher was baptised. A sleepy little Chris can be seen here with his mum, dad, big sister and godparents. In fact, he slept throughout the entire service, only waking briefly when water was sprinkled over him. Although not at all impressed by this, he was soon fast asleep again!

Birthday Posies: The Birthday Girls for the month

were Sue Josty and Ann Fuller.

The business of the meeting ended and our Speaker, Wendy Warren stepped forward.

Wendy is an astonishing tall, slender and elegant young South African woman who has lived in England for seventeen years since meeting her husband in South Africa and arriving pregnant with her first child.

She spoke about, and demonstrated, how you can totally transform an outfit in a matter of minutes by appropriate scarf tying, pointing out that women are not all the same shape, or size, but you can create a “look” to flatter most people.

She showed us some very clever ways of knotting scarves to create different impressions, speaking about the “Fashion Knot” and the “Pretzel”.

She had brought a really wonderful assortment of different scarves, both large and small, in both silk and also man-made materials, with which she created boleros (by using rubber bands to bunching up the material on both sides) and other stylish effects.

At the end of her demonstration Members were able to buy most of the scarves on view together with a pamphlet reminding people how to create the effects we had just witnessed.

These were put into elegant little bags, which was a pleasing touch.

This was a really interesting talk, lots of scarves were purchased, and Members felt quite inspired looking forward to experimenting with their newly purchased scarves.

Date of the next meeting will be on June 6th and our Speaker will be Simon Michael, an ex-Barrister, whose subject will be “My Life In Crime”. Time: 7.30pm in the Village Hall.

Bunyan’s Bedford welcomes tourists

A NEW website has been launched to promote landmarks of the world famous ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’ book in Bedfordshire. bunyansbedford.weebly.com brings together all those places and people involved in serving the international interest in John Bunyan, author of what was for centuries the world’s best selling book (behind the King James Bible).

“Now Harry Potter has moved into the top three, and of course has its own theme park in Hertfordshire, but what many people may not know is that John Bunyan has his own theme park in South Korea*.

Actually it is more of a centre of contemplation but those worshippers do see Bedford as a place of pilgrimage,” explains Ruth Broomhall, teacher and author who has brought the group together.

In fact bus loads of tourists from America, Europe, China and Korea arrive in Bunyan’s home village of Elstow regularly.

They visit the ancient Moot Hall and Elstow Abbey on the village green as well as the site of Bunyan’s home at what is now St Helena’s Restaurant. They also visit Bedford to take in various sights. The idea of the new group is to harness the interest those visitors for the benefit of all Bunyan locations in Bedfordshire.

Bringing the ‘The Pilgrim’s Progress’ book back to the classroom in Bedfordshire is Ruth Broomhall, who co-wrote the devotional “To be a Pilgrim” (CWR, 2016) and has created a tool box of materials to enable teachers to bring the story to life for primary school children.

The materials are available via her website, named after a significant building in the story palacebeautiful.co.uk, and The Word bookshop, Castle Road, Bedford, and John Bunyan Museum and Church.

Ruth is now working on a new book about the little-known sequel to The Pilgrim’s Progress based on the pilgrim Christian’s wife Christiana and family. The children’s book will be illustrated by Alasdair Bright and will include recognisable Bedfordshire landmarks and will recreate some of the monsters and challenges the family faced.

She is working with local school children to help bring the story to life.

“Bunyan has a worldwide fan base - his book was a revelation and created a revolution among Christians who took the message around the world. As it was an allegory it made the Christian story accessible to people in a way the traditional church’s teachings in Latin could not,” added Ruth, “It is hard now to understand the huge impact it had in terms of communicating Bunyan’s beliefs - something like Sky TV combined with Harry Potter.”

‘Fitness fun for everyone’ IT’S the first May Bank holiday weekend and the sun is shining, the sky is blue and the lawnmowers are whirring.

The good weather seems to be giving folk the motivation they need to be more active.

Hooray! Long may the sun shine.

So, how about joining in with a no frills way of promoting your own way to get fit and keep fit? Fitter me’s simple circuits are suitable for everyone. Yes, really! There’s a mix of aerobic and weight bearing exercises which provide a full body workout for the maximum health and well being.

Whether you are recovering from illness or injury, want to start getting fitter and healthier or want to maintain your current level of fitness, you will be made very welcome by the group of people who already experience the benefits of simple circuits. They are all at different levels when it comes to exercise and are a very

friendly and supportive group led by our qualified trainer, Steve Clark, 07739 707604 The sessions begin with a gentle warm up and then everyone starts the first part where they wish spending approximately 1 minute at each station followed by a short break for a drink. The second part follows the same pattern culminating in a short cool down session. Of course, you can take a break at other times too if necessary.

The variety of exercises with choices of easy, medium and harder levels of effort required, make them interesting and accessible to all.

Walking Group ON Wednesday May 16th, eight of us set out from The Bedford Arms Souldrop for a six mile walk mainly within the attractive grounds of Colworth House. The going was good and thank goodness dry at last under foot.

Fortunately, (at least for me with my dodgy hip) there were no stiles to negotiate.

We started the walk crossing a bridge over the Railway and following field edges taking us into the Colworth Estate. After a long section of stone path, we followed two pretty woodland trails before heading back uphill into Souldrop and back to the Pub where two members who couldn’t walk, joined us for lunch where we enjoyed a good selection of Real Ale and generous portions of excellent food.

Annual Churchwarden’s report April 2017 – April 2018 Worship and Study Groups The pattern of United Holy Communion and Morning Worship Services has continued. There have been benefice services with All Saints’ Milton Ernest and St Peter’s Pavenham for Patronal Festivals and during the month of August. We have held special services too – St Peter’s Patronal Festival, Harvest, Christingle and a United Carol Service on Christmas Eve. Peter Kay, Sue Ives and Peter Protheroe have led the ministry in St Peter’s assisted by visiting clergy, preachers and lay leaders at times.

Morning Prayer is held at 10am on Friday mornings in church or at 13, Keysoe Road when there is very cold weather. Once again the staff and pupils of the lower school have used the church to stage performances of the nativity story.

Cards detailing times of benefice services for Christmas and Easter have been produced and delivered to all parishioners.

In January this year 1-4-All was started to encourage some of the families who attend Meeting Place to come along to a short informal service at 4 pm on the first Sunday of each month. This is proving to be successful.

Benefice study groups during Advent and Lent and have been appreciated and enjoyed by participants.

The statutory inventory book of contents has been updated and repairs and additions have been recorded in the log book. Assessment of the condition of pews is carried out regularly and remedial work to control beetle damage has been undertaken.

THURLEIGH VILLAGE HALL MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

Annual Report March 2018 THE aim of the management committee is to provide and facilitate activities and events for the benefit of villagers and others from further afield. We are pleased to report that we have had a busy and profitable year at the village hall here in Thurleigh and have fulfilled our aim.

Regular hall bookings are looking healthy and provide a steady income.

Activities and clubs which use the hall are Korean Martial Arts, Simple Circuits, Pilates, the Brocklesby Dance Academy, Ladies’ Club and the Sewing Group.

Other bookings have included regular Parish Council Meetings, children’s and adult parties, funeral lunches, training and promotion days for businesses, the Annual Lace Day, Parish Council events and the polling station. We express our thanks to Pat for her efforts in securing regular and occasional bookings.

Village Hall organised events continue to be successful including jumble sales and lunches. The last ’baked potato’ lunch being very much enjoyed with the addition of a musical trio.

Several requests to repeat this have been received.

The bar is used for various events

including the lunches and is a valuable asset. In November 2017, at the request of a number of villagers, a social evening was organised by villagers and the committee members, to gauge the level of interest in a regular pub night. The stock was increased to include a wider range of ales and other drinks.

The evening was a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended so it was agreed in committee to establish a regular Pop up Pub night on the third Friday of each month. To date we have held three such events with steadily increasing numbers of villagers and non residents attending.

It is important to take into account requests and suggestions of residents when planning such events to ensure that they support them. One example is that we have featured a variety of gins, Hornes real ales and The Happy Brewer company owners displaying their merchandise and being on hand to give advice.

By being open to ideas we are appealing to a wider age group. After all, the village hall has existed for many years with the purpose of serving the people of Thurleigh.

However, we really need more bar staff and committee members to support our small group. One villager volunteered to serve on the bar at March’s evening and thoroughly enjoyed it. She wants to do it again! If there are several people willing to work on the bar then everyone can have ‘time out’ to socialise.

We all know how difficult it is to recruit people so if you know of anyone who would like to be involved please speak to Richard Singleton, the chairman, or any committee member. We work well together and enjoy planning and organising events.

We are always thinking of ways to improve the hall’s facilities and are pleased with the new under sink water heater and the drinks hot water heater which were recently installed.

Richard extended his gratitude to all committee members for their hard work and support during 2017-2018 and to the group of non members who give up their time in a variety of ways to support village hall activities.

Quick growing and exotic!

NNUAL climbers are exotic colourful plants that grow quickly to transform a new garden, hide unsightly areas or add extra colour to existing fences, arches, pergolas or obelisks all in one summer. They have the capacity to germinate, grow vigorously, flower generously and set seed within a few months. Some are technically perennials in their native countries but are subject to frost in England so we grow them as summer flowering annuals. They give extra summer interest when grown over existing evergreens or spring flowering shrubs or

through leafy perennial climbers. They are excellent when growing on an obelisk or tripod in a container surrounded by annual bedding plants where they give height and direct the eye line to the interest below. Keep

pinching out the new tips to give tight compact growth and an increased number of flowers. In new gardens they will quickly cover new fences in one season while the perennial slower growing plants like clematis and roses become established.

A very popular Annual climber is the Sweet Pea, Lathyrus Odoratus. They are easy to grow from seed planted in March under cover and moved to the flowering position in May. The flowers which are very sweetly scented are in a gorgeous array of colours from white, pink, red, maroon, lilac, blue and deep purple. They are very successful when growing in a container over a tripod or obelisk. Keep cutting the flowers every few days to keep the flowers coming until late summer.

Eccremocarpus Scaber, The Chilean Glory Plant, is a slender climber with bright tubular flowers in red, orange or pink. It associates well with Canary Creeper, Tropaeolum Peregunum a vigorous scrambler with bright yellow feathery flowers and attractive palm shaped leaves. Both are good scrambling over spring flowering shrubs that have already made their colourful contribution to our gardens.

Cobaea Scandens, The Cup and Saucer Vine, has sweet smelling large bell shaped flowers that open white green and mature to purple in colour, the bell cups sit in the green bract saucers. It enjoys moist well drained soil in full sun and climbs by tendrils so excellent on plastic or wire supports on wooden fences or wooden trellis.

Ipomoea Tricolor, Morning Glory is a splendid climber which is very easy to grow quickly covering 5m. It will cover trellis and chain link fencing forming a good backcloth for other summer flowering annuals. The profusion of gorgeous azure blue trumpet flowers appear from June to October. It is very free flowering when grown in full sun in free draining soil. The large heart shaped leaves are also very decorative. The flowers attract butterflies and bees.

Thunbergii Alatus Susie Orange, Black Eyed Susan, a discreet twining plant that grows well in free draining soil in sun. It has lots of small deep orange flowers with black centres from June to September. Use for focal height on a small obelisk in a mixed container. It is important to remove the faded flowers to ensure continuous flowering.

Another smaller climber is Petunia Tidal Wave. It will grow to 1.8m on a tripod in a pot and give a wonderfully colourful display of white, red, pink and crimson all summer. The container needs to be in full sun, use Jacks Magic Compost for planting and feed weekly with tomato food removing the faded flowers as they appear.

Nasturtium African Queen is another climbing bedding plant with yellow orange and red flowers and lovely grey green leaves.

Allow it to scramble over low evergreens or spring flowering deciduous shrubs for a blaze of late summer colour.

A funky thing to try which is amazingly effective if you have an archway and want a bit of fun is to plant climbing Runner Beans Painted Lady which have attractive white and red flowers and then edible runner beans with Curcubita Maxima Turks Turban. This is a winter squash with multi coloured fruits that appear in late summer. The fruits are the shape of Turkish Turbans and a phenomenal array of colours from white yellow orange red and green.

Crazy weather patterns dominate

T

HE afternoon temperatures on four days sum up the large weather variations in the last month or so.

For effect I quote the temperatures in ‘old money’!

April 12th, 46°F – N.E. wind, dull, some rain April 19th, 83°F – S. wind, sunny all day April 29th, 46°F – N.E. wind dull with drizzle May 7th, 81°F – S. wind, sunny all day.

April 19th, was one of a sequence of five consecutive days over 23°C – the only one I’ve had and 28.5°C on 19th is a record high for April.

May 7th was one of four consecutive days (5-8) over 23°C – so a total of nine days over 23°C in 26 days is pretty good for spring in Bedford.

Mind you 8°C on 11th April and 7.6°C on 12th were pretty bleak, and 27th-30th April (8.8°C, 8.1°C, 7.6°C and 8.0°C on 30th until late (a bit of sunshine helped!) were extra bleak. A chilly wind N.E. wind though the promised or threatened deluge on 30th stayed to the east of us.

It could have been worse, as was the case in 1981, when April 22nd-26th had air frosts every night and days all below 9°C. 24th saw just 5.8°C and 26th, 4.8°C, while 25 and 26 saw a total rainfall of 58mm and some of it fell as snow.

My 1st-4th, 1979 were my first ever measurements here in Bedford, saw three air frosts and every day below 10°C – not at all spring like.

I gather it is too early to detect trends for summer!
