The strain was clear for all to see but finally there was relief for Gary Sweet when Councillors gave the YES to Newlands Park.

“March 11, 2019 will be remembered in years to come as one of the most important days in the entire history of Luton Town Football Club” ThaT was the view of the hatters after Luton Borough Council’s development control committee decided that the plans for Newlands Park should be approved.

The club said in a statement: “This momentous decision comes two-and-a-half years after the plans were submitted and following a rigorous period of scrutiny from the council’s planning department.

“We can now all look forward to a future in the state-of-the-art stadium at Power Court, a secure future which will give us the best possible opportunity to compete at the highest level and a bright future for Luton, with the club’s developments at the heart of the town’s regeneration.

“As well as the obvious benefits to the club, the developments will bring in the region of 10,000 jobs to Luton and a muchneeded boost to the local economy to the tune of £250million annually.

“On March 1, the planning department revealed their report, which recommended Newlands Park for approval – laying the foundations for this evening’s decision. The plans, which were revealed to the public in 2016 alongside the plans for the new Hatters

stadium at Power Court, consist of new offices, retail, leisure facilities, restaurants and bars as well as a 300-bed hotel. The development will provide the people of Luton with exciting new places to work, relax and play with easy access to the town centre, M1 and London Luton Airport.

“2020 Developments have already invested approximately £30million purchasing the land for the developments at Power Court and Newlands Park, demonstrating their absolute commitment to the Town, and the projects, which were the best-supported in UK history with some 11,000 letters of support received by the local council for the two projects.

“We would like to extend our thanks to Hatters everywhere for their patience and support which has gone a long way to help us achieve planning consent, especially those volunteers who have given up their time to support the applications so vocally.

“Even with this evening’s positive news, your support may still be required. In due course we will discover whether the Secretary of State will ‘call-in’ the Newlands Park project or if it has to go to a judicial review.

“We should also once again thank Luton Borough Council who have diligently and meticulously examined the applications and made a secure decision following the required protocols. The scale of their task should not be underestimated.

“In November 2007, Luton Town Football Club were on the edge of the abyss, and on the verge of disappearing altogether.

“In 2008 Luton Town Football Club 2020 Ltd took the reins and began implementing their vision that by the year 2020 the club would be reborn. The rebirth would come in the shape of a new stadium, playing football at a level befitting of a club with the heritage and standing of our great club – and they have kept their word.

“Tonight’s future-making decision will be celebrated by Lutonians and Luton Town supporters everywhere from Bury Park to Berlin, Marsh Farm to Melbourne and New Town to New York. Today’s place in the history books is guaranteed.

“But this decision is not about the club’s past. It is about the future.”

CAMPAIGN GROUP #saveourtown says that councillors have “etched themselves into Luton folklore” after approving the major regeneration application for Newlands Park.

Cheers, tears and hugs broke out in the Town Hall chamber as members of the development control committee approved the planning application for the mixed-use site by Junction 10 of the M1.

It was the second major planning application from 2020 Developments – the property arm of Luton Town Football Club – approved this year after Power Court was given the green light in January.

But although that decision assured the town of planning permission for a new 17,500-seat football stadium, an 1,800-capacity music venue, bars, restaurants, leisure entertainment and more, Monday’s Newlands Park decision was crucial for the delivery of such major transformation at no cost to the taxpayer.

The town is now set to benefit from an annual £250million boost to the local economy and 10,000 new jobs.

It was a verdict that has been more than two-and-a-half years in the making due to major opposition from Capital & Regional, the owners of The Mall shopping centre.

However, no representatives of the London-based retail group were in attendance at the Town Hall and they instead sent a letter to be read out in which they claimed ‘three facts and three fallacies’ critical to the decision. It mattered little as all but Limbury councillor Stephen Lewis voted in favour of the application, while Cllr Gilbert Campbell (Bramingham) abstained.

Nigel Green, chairman of #saveourtown, said: “Tonight’s Newlands Park decision marks a major milestone in the history of Luton that future generations can look back upon with pride as being a moment that signalled a change in our town’s destiny.

With spaces for the public in the Luton Town Hall committee room limited, they were able to watch the three-and-a-half hour meeting as it happened.

And about 2,400 were viewing online as the drama unfolded and councillors gave the green light to the mixed use development.

The video feed was made available again following its success when the Power Court planning application was debated in January.

Interviewed by BBC Look east at the Town hall in the minutes immediately after the unanimous verdict was returned by the development control committee, sweet couldn’t hide his delight at another historic night following the January approval of a new stadium at Power Court.

But he also urged caution among supporters for a few weeks yet. he said: “It is probably the biggest moment in the history of Luton Town Football Club. My job is to keep my feet on the ground now and wait for the secretary of state to give his approval and ensure there is no challenge thereafter.

“We’ve still got three or four months to go, and then I’ll probably open my bottle of Champagne. But I’ll insist that everyone else does so now.” sweet said that it would be “normal” procedure for there to be a further delay.

“The secretary of state may will have a look at it to see if there is any kind of regional impact and to see if he agrees with the decision of the council,” he added.

“For us, it’s a local decision, so there should be no call-in. and then it is up to anybody if they want to challenge it through the judicial review process, which is them challenging the decision of the council. so we’ll probably need about four months before we absolutely know that none of those things will happen.” asked if he could believe that the moment had finally arrived that both applications for Power Court and Newlands Park had been approved, twoand-a-half years after their submission, he added: “I can believe it because I always had faith and confidence that we’d get to this point.

“That’s not an arrogant statement, but it’s interesting that when we deal in a commercial world, we are football people, we don’t lose.

“We’ve got a sports mentality that we take to the commercial market and so, in

this case, we studied the opposition in the way that Mick harford will be with Bradford tomorrow night and Gillingham on saturday.

“We knew what the arguments were going to be and we covered all of that with the retail conditions and all of the additional effort that we put into the design.

“I think we won it two-and-a-half years ago when we submitted the applications.

It’s been the same argument that we had back then. It’s been the same designs that we had back then. We’ve used the same people all the way through.

“We haven’t changed any of those consultants. It’s a team, just like Mick’s taking the team to Bradford, this is a team. our team is solid, it’s sound and we know what we’re talking about. It was thoroughly thought through. The designs are fantastic and we are providing Luton with exactly what Luton needs, and that’s why we won the case.”

Is he worried about a judicial review being called for by an objectors?

“No, I don’t really worry about something I can’t control. If it comes our way, then we’ll deal with it. It’s likely to go the council’s way in that case, but we’ll support the council in that. We’ve been doing this now for around four years, so we kind of know what we are talking about and I think ultimately tonight, what it means is that it will happen, and the only thing that can occur from somebody else’s intervention is that there will be a delay.” on a potential date for moving into a new stadium, he added: “one thing I thank everybody for is their patience, but I’m also going to ask for more because actually we can’t really give a date. I don’t necessarily want to do what Tottenham have done this year and announce a moving in date and then delay it. “so when you get a date from us, it will be a realistic one, but enjoy Kenilworth Road for the next three or four years is all I’m going to say. I did say to somebody the other day: ‘are we moving in two years’ time?’ he asked me. I said: ‘Well no, you want more time at Kenilworth Road than that to enjoy it, don’t you?’ and he said: ‘Well yeah, I do really”. “so enjoy Kenilworth Road for a bit yet and then hopefully it’ll be just around the corner from there.”

Council urges residents not to lose their vote

CENTRAL Bedfordshire Council is encouraging local residents who have not yet registered to vote to have a say on who represents them locally by going online now to register.

However, residents don’t need to register separately for every election, and will only need to register again if they’ve changed address, name or nationality since voting in the last election.

You can only vote in local elections on Thursday 2 May if your name appears in the register of electors and if you are aged 18 or over on polling day.

The deadline to submit application forms to register to vote is midnight on Friday,12 April.

Anyone not registered can do so at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Poll cards will be delivered at addresses across the Central Bedfordshire Council area from 5 – 9 April, with postal votes being sent out from 8 April

for Council Ward elections and 15 April for Parish elections. If you do not receive a poll card, you may not be on the electoral register for the address where you live. Anyone who doesn’t get a named poll card posted to the address where they live should register to vote at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

Richard Carr, Electoral Registration Officer and Chief Executive for Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “Anyone not yet registered to vote should do so as soon as possible. It only takes a few minutes to complete the form online, and it will enable residents to have their say on issues that affect their lives.”

Proposed merger of Cheynes Infant and Sundon Park Junior’s

THE governing bodies of Cheynes Infant and Sundon Park Junior Schools agreed last week to proceed with a proposal to merge to create a single primary school for children aged 4-11 years from 1 September 2019.

The council routinely explores merging schools in the event of an infant/junior headteacher retiring and was recently made aware that the headteacher of Cheynes Infant School will retire at the end of the academic year. The governing bodies were asked to consider whether an amalgamation of the two schools to create one primary school would be appropriate.

There will be the same number of pupils under this proposal and there are no planned reductions to the number of staff as part of the proposed merger.

Creating a new primary school offers many benefits including better continuity to pupils in terms of curriculum and school ethos; increased opportunity to share resources and expertise; achieve economies of scale in terms of the procurement of goods and services and assist with the recruitment and retention of staff.

Both schools carried out a preconsultation (21 January-1

March) with staff, parents and other members of their local community to determine views on the proposed merger.

A statutory notice will be published in the local media this week and the proposal will be published on the council’s consultation portal to give all interested parties further opportunity to express their views. The consultation will run from 14 March -11 April.

Cllr Mahmood Hussain, portfolio holder with responsibility for children and young people said: “There are many benefits to gain from this proposal from continuity of learning for the pupils without the added stress of having to change schools at the end of Year 2 to sharing the good practices from both schools. More average speed cameras to be installed across Bedford Borough AVERAGE speed cameras will be installed at seven more locations across Bedford Borough.

The villages of Bromham, Clapham, Colmworth, Elstow and Willington are set to have average speed cameras installed, alongside Hillgrounds Road in Kempston and Mile Road in Bedford.

These cameras measure the average speed over a length of road, rather than measuring it at a fixed point. This means they have a greater long term effect on how fast people choose to drive rather than just slowing down for a speed camera. They also help drivers choose a more appropriate lower speed across the road network.

The Council does not make money from the cameras, with the fines being retained by Central Government.

Commenting, Mayor Dave Hodgson said: “Speeding is a common concern for local communities across the Borough, so we are taking action to reduce speeds and make our roads safer. These cameras will join other average speed cameras already in place in our Borough, which have already had a positive impact on road users and local communities. They have brought speeds down, made our roads safer for all and improved the day-to-day experience of those who live in proximity to speeding hotspots.”

New sixth form for Weatherfield

A BRAND new sixth form centre has been opened at a special school in Dunstable.

The centre has been built with the help of the Connolly Foundation, a Bedfordshire charity.

Weatherfield Academy is a school that teaches children with special educational needs from all over Central Bedfordshire The school is for pupils whose needs are categorised as having Moderate Learning Difficulties.

The Academy is for young people who find it difficult to maintain progress in mainstream education settings.

It has an excellent learning environment, including a sensory garden and a smallholding, with some livestock, which the students mainly look after themselves.

The curriculum is tailored to the needs of the

pupils.

Due to ever increasing numbers, however, space was at a premium, particularly for the growing sixth form.

So with the help of the Connolly Foundation a brand new sixth form centre has been built.

Headteacher Joe Selmes said: “We have a vision of providing the best possible opportunities for pupils with learning difficulties from Central Bedfordshire and Luton.

“On behalf of the Governors, staff and pupils of Weatherfield Academy Special School, I would like to thank ‘The Connolly Foundation’ for their generosity. The bespoke nature of this new classroom will allow our learners to work on their vocational and independence skills, which are a crucial area of their development”.

Retail Guru, Bill Grimsey gives Biggleswade the thumbs up WELL-KNOWN retail guru Bill Grimsey recently visited Biggleswade. Invited by the Town Council., he met with local traders, together with representatives of Central Bedfordshire Council and the wider community, in an action-packed tour on Wednesday.

Town Councillors had read the Grimsey Review as part of the background for its preparation of the Biggleswade Neighbourhood Plan, and, working with traders and others, is prepared to do some hard thinking about the future of the town.

Cllr Madeline Russell, hosting the visit, said “We are in the process of putting together a coherent Neighbourhood Plan for our muchloved historic market town. Bill is providing invaluable assistance to us in understanding the real future for the retail sector and how best to diversify the offer in our town. We want to create the best conditions for all traders to thrive and grow.”

As well as a walkabout in the town centre, visiting local shops and services, Bill Grimsey toured the wider area in a minibus to take in

the full context of a growing town – the Retail Park, Business Park, Green Wheel, Kings Reach and Land East of Biggleswade site.

Bill Grimsey said “Biggleswade town centre is a very special place and seems to be doing very well, with a number of new openings, despite the harsh economic conditions currently faced by retailers. I commend the Town Council for moving to protect the town as a precious hub for economic development, community service and social discourse. The future for Biggleswade should not rely solely on retail activity and I say this, as a retailer, man and boy.”

Bill’s visit was also seen as vital preparation for a forthcoming bid from Central Bedfordshire Council to Government for a share of the £675 million Future High Streets Fund announced by the Chancellor in the Autumn Statement. The focus will be to encourage a complete community hub, incorporating health, housing arts, education, entertainment, leisure and business space, as well as protecting valued local shops.

YOUNGSTERS from topperforming Wootton Upper School met with 50 employers as part of a ‘speed networking’ careers event to prepare them for the future.

Many of the local company directors in attendance were former pupils of the school, returning to showcase their success and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and high-achievers.

The event, which attracted more than 300 Year 9 pupils, was also attended by a host of university representatives who were available to advise those considering further education.

Michael Gleeson, school principal, said: “We’re absolutely delighted so many of the top employers in Bedford supported this event and gave up their time to talk to our pupils about their future career options.

“Taking those first steps in the world of work can be a nervewracking experience, even if you are planning to go on to further study to enhance your skills, and I’m really grateful for the insight of so many successful professionals, many of whom are former Wootton Upper pupils.

“We take our nurturing responsibilities very seriously and want to help our students make the right decisions for their future.

This speed networking event is just one of many opportunities provided by the school to allow students to explore their talents and strengths and research the

myriad of pathways available to them in the future.

The event was organised by Yvonne Ashby, careers education and employer engagement lead for Wootton Academy Trust.

Wootton Upper School, based in Hall End Road, Wootton, provides a broader range of subjects to study than many other schools, allowing pupils to choose ideal combinations to assist them on their future career aspirations.

A wide range of new course options will be available from September which will be of interest to students currently in Year 8 and 9.

Wootton Upper School recently became one of only nine schools in the UK to receive the coveted Secondary Geography Quality Mark (SGQM) in recognition of “excellence in teaching and learning in geography” in the 2018 awards scheme.

The award, presented by The Geographical Association, follows a rigorous assessment process in which the National Moderation Team examined how well the school embraced new and innovative approaches to teaching, pupil attainment and achievement levels, student understanding and knowledge of geography and the quality of teaching available.

England Rugby Star Coaches BMS Year 4 ON Wednesday, March, 13, current England Rugby CoCaptain, Dylan Hartley, visited Bedford Modern School to run a training session with their Year 4 boys. He was joined by Bedford Blues Assistant Coach, Paul Tupai, to work on the principles of going forward in attack and supporting the ball carrier.

After the session Dylan ran a questions and answers session with the group and was able to offer the boys lots of expert advice and feedback on how to develop their skills and become the next generation of BMS Rugby Players.

Dylan currently plays for England and the Northampton Saints, and has captained England since January 2016. He currently co-captains alongside Owen Farrell and is the country’s most capped hooker. He

captained England to the Grand Slam in 2016, the first time that England had achieved this since 2003 and to a 3-0 series win in the 2016 Cook Cup against Australia.

Bedford Modern School’s Head of Rugby, Brett Richmond, said: “It is a huge honour for the school to have someone of his playing ability offer to come down and coach. The boys really took advantage of this opportunity and have shown real progress through the morning’’.

Head of Junior School Sport, Tim Bucktin, commented: “This was a fantastic experience for our Year 4 boys to receive professional coaching from the co-captain of England. It was thoroughly enjoyable for everyone involved and I’m sure the boys will remember it for a very long time to come.”

Dragons, dragons, and more dragons this St George’s Day

LUTON Council is planning a dragontastic St George’s Day this year, filling St George’s Square with dragon themed activities and attractions for the whole family.

Take part in interactive adventures with the pirate knight Sir Aurelious Jones, saving him from Epico the Dragon, and have a go on the beautiful wooden musical installation, George the Dragon, operating handles to make him blow bubbles and play music.

Activities include dragon colouring, and making shields and swords, and Next Generation Youth Theatre will be performing two dance pieces. Punch and Judy return with their traditional show and delicious cream teas will be handed out by Luton in Harmony, which you can enjoy whilst sat in one of the many giant deckchairs made available on the day.

You’ll also be able to have a go at wall climbing, caving trails,

balloon modelling and plenty of other dragon arts and crafts.

London Luton Airport Ltd (LLAL), the council’s airport company, is generously acting as principal sponsor, making the event possible.

Two London drug dealers jailed TWO men from London were jailed on Monday, March 11, 2019, for six years for dealing heroin and cocaine in Bedfordshire.

Joel Mensah, 20, and Rusharn Reid-Clarke, 23, both from London, were arrested in Luton in December 2017.

Police received a report, made by a safeguarding officer, that a vulnerable person was being ‘cuckooed’ – exploited by having his home used as a base for drug dealing.

Officers attended the address in Heswall Court in Luton where they found Mensah and Reid-Clarke, as well as Class A drugs, drugs paraphernalia and mobile phones.

When in custody, officers searched Mensah and found he was in possession of additional class A drugs.

Mensah pleaded guilty to possession with intent to supply cocaine, found during the search in custody and was sentenced to 32 months in jail.

He was also found guilty and sentenced to three years for possession with intent to supply heroin, to run concurrently.

MORE temporary accommodation is being provided for homeless people in Bedford Borough.

The Council has converted a number of vacant properties into temporary accommodation for those who are homeless. Five properties have already been refurbished providing up to 17 bedrooms, with the first families moving in last month.

Cllr Anthony Forth, Portfolio Holder for Adult Services and Operational Housing said: “This programme of refurbishment and conversion is not just bringing formerly empty properties back into use, but it is providing much needed local temporary accommodation for people who are homeless.

Providing temporary accommodation can be very costly, but the Council has a duty to ensure that those who are in need of such accommodation are housed.

These works will help us to continue to provide this housing more efficiently, and will help to ensure that we can continue to house people who are in need of temporary accommodation.”

Choral success for BMS at Bedfordshire Festival

ON Saturday 02 March, the Year 5 and 6 choir from Bedford Modern School competed in the Bedfordshire Festival of Music, Speech and Drama at Bedford Corn Exchange. After winning their category they were subsequently awarded the Bedford Choral Society Cup, given to the most outstanding choir of the junior choirs section of the festival, together with a prize of £200.

Competing against choirs from five other schools, they sang three songs from Hart and Cooling’s ‘Going West’: Welcome to Rustin Creek, Song of the Prairie and Ballad of Big Tex. Adjudicator, Sarah Jefferies, was particularly impressed by the vitality and commitment of their performance, and commented on the accuracy of their twopart singing.

Head of Junior School Music, Mr Bishop, said: “The children rose to the occasion magnificently and sang beautifully; clearly enjoying the experience of performing to a packed hall. There was a lovely, exciting atmosphere and our choir appreciated the warm welcome that they received. They are very much looking forward to visiting again next year.”

Spectacular celebration for Bedford’s Harpur Centre refurb

The harpur Centre revealed their sensational new look last weekend with a special visit from the Mayor of Bedford, dave hodgson and a dazzling carnivalesque celebration. on saturday 9th March, the harpur Centre hosted an unprecedented event for Bedford’s shoppers to celebrate the relaunch of its brand new refurbishment. at 11am, Mayor david hodgson commenced the carnival celebrations by cutting the ribbon on the Centre’s brand new elevator to unveil the astonishing new interior to the public. isitors to the Centre reveled in the carnivalesque entertainment and jumped at the chance to get involved, with a large number of the public joining in with the spectacle.

Visitors to the Centre enjoyed an array of remarkable entertainment including the harpur Centre’s fabulous showgirls, a lively samba band and exciting carnival acts that performed at intervals throughout the day.

Children also immersed themselves in the celebrations at the face painting station, where they transformed into glamorous carnivalesque characters, all

of which was completely FRee. BEDFORD-BASED familybrewer Charles Wells has challenged local Bedford College students to come up with branding design ideas for its new multi-million investment brewhouse and visitor destination, due to open to the public in early 2020.

The new brewery development will have capacity to produce up to 5.5 million pints a year serving Charles Wells’ 197 pub-estate across the UK and France. The site will also house fantastic facilities for the community, including a visitor centre offering tours of the brewery, a bar and restaurant that can be hired out for events and conferences, as well as a retail space stocked full of exclusive beers brewed on-site.

In March, 30 students from Bedford College’s graphic design department will have the opportunity to pitch their individual creative design ideas for the brewery’s branding to a team at Charles Wells, who will review and choose one concept to develop further. The panel judging the entries includes former Bedford College BA student Marcus Finch, who studied graphic design and is now working at Charles Wells as a Retail and Brand Marketing Executive.

Charles Wells’ commercial director Peter Wells said “The local community is at the heart of the Charles Wells business, not

just in Bedford where we’ve been based since 1876, but across all our sites. We want our new brewhouse development to be a destination that locals are proud of and want to visit so getting them involved from the outset is crucial. Bedford College is full of talented and creative individuals and we truly value their ideas and feedback on what would work well in terms of the look and feel of our new branding. Black grape could only have been made in Manchester. The swagger, fun and cryptic humour seem hewn from a city that offers a different way of English urban life to London.

Both Shaun Ryder and Paul Leveridge, known as Kermit, came from edgy-but-cool parts of the city.

In Shaun’s case Salford, with Kermit originating Moss Side.

So we have two restlessly creative men, both from the wrong side of the tracks, neither inclined to go to art school or enrol on an MFA programme, yet loaded with street smarts and musical talent, and wanting the world. Good old punk had told every scally they could have it, and a generation went for it in their own ways, with varying degrees of success. Shaun’s astonishing rise and fall with the Happy Mondays is the stuff of legend.

As the friendship developed, so too did a stunning collaboration. It’s Great When You’re Straight...Yeah, the ironically entitled album, gave a nod to their hook up as drugs buddies around the grizzled fag end of Happy Mondays and Kermit’s band The Ruthless Rap Assassins. It was a storming phoenix rising from the ashes of the other projects that seemed to have run their course.

Black Grape followed this up with Stupid, Stupid, Stupid.

Then...nothing… until now.

Black Grape are back on the road, and with new album Pop Voodoo – a rewind to over twenty years ago and the glory days. Shaun’s word play has never been deployed to such devastating effect, and he scores a bullseye whether he hits the obvious targets (Trump), and the more obscure ones... Pioneers of the London Acid Jazz scene, The Brand New Heavies, are a British music institution whose unique mix of jazz, funk and soul has lit up the UK music scene for well over two decades.

Over the years The Brand New Heavies have been responsible for some of the UK’s biggest R & B/ soul tracks, scoring 16 top 40 singles including ‘Dream On Dreamer’ and ‘You’ve Got A Friend’, as well as over two million album sales.

It was old school friends Jan, Andrew and Simon pursuing their near-obsessive love of soul music and ‘70s funk that inspired them to form The Brand New Heavies.

Early hits ‘Never Stop and ‘Dream Come True’ were original chunks of organic funk that earned the band a reputation as a formidable live act and their reinterpretations of popular standards, such as ‘Midnight At The Oasis’, Carole King’s ‘You’ve Got A Friend ‘and the Stevie Wonder classic ‘I Don’t Know Why (I Love You)’, brought major global chart success.

Celebrate all things gardens and gardening with The Higgins Bedford at the new exhibition ‘Round and Round the Garden: A Celebration of Horticulture in Art’.

Featuring works by major artists from the internationally renowned Cecil Higgins Collection, this exhibition celebrates our human fascination with gardens and looks at how gardens and gardening have provided inspiration for artists.

Members of the public are also invited to send in photos for the #BedfordLovesGardening display at the exhibition entrance, making this a truly unique exhibition.

Artists have always been inspired by gardens. Pre-Raphaelite John Everett Millais saw them as settings for tragic love stories.

Walter Sickert brought the garden inside for his still life pieces, while Joan Eardley braved the weather to paint Scottish wild flowers.

Edward Bawden depicted the large botanical gardens at Kew whilst Paul Nash painted village gardens. Camden Town artist Charles Ginner painted his own suburban garden, whilst Lucian

Freud and Graham Sutherland travelled further afield to paint continental gardens and exotic plants.

There will also be a sensory installation in the gallery created by the Theatre of Widdershins with The Wynding Wixam Tree, a sculptural piece by local puppet maker and storyteller, Andy Lawrence. Alongside the exhibition there will be garden-themed events including garden tours, plant sales, a British Sign Language tour and workshop with Access Bedford, lunchtime lectures, Easter and May Half-Term holiday activities and more.

Cllr Sarah-Jayne Gallagher, Portfolio Holder for Leisure and Culture said “This exhibition explores one of Britain’s great loves; gardens and gardening. It will be fantastic to see photos from the public of their favourite gardens displayed alongside pieces of artwork from The Higgins Bedford’s incredible collection.”

sTeadFasT Town dug deep to claim a pivotal 1-0 victory over lowly Bradford in horrendous conditions at Valley Parade on Tuesday night.

Attacking full-back Jack Stacey fired home the winner early in the first half before Luton defended like dervishes to claim an invaluable victory and stretch their record unbeaten league run to 24 games as they pulled clear at the top of the League One table.

This was another high on a momentous week after Luton Borough Council had granted planning permission to the club’s Newlands Park development on Monday night - the linchpin of the Hatters building their new ground at Power Court in the heart of the town centre.

Poor weather led to a bitty opening with neither side able to get on top until Town snatched the lead on 16 minutes.

With Luton ‘quarterback’ Andrew Shinnie dictating the play his astute pass set Stacey clean through and he drove low into the far

corner to make it 1-0.

Town quickly started to take control as Pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu was felled on the edge of the box but nothing was given before Stacey forced a decent save with another fierce strike from a narrow angle.

The impressive Shinnie then saw his 30yard long-ranger clawed away by Richard O’Donnell before curling well wide when off balance.

It should have been 2-0 midway through the half as, after Matty Pearson was unable to turn home at the near post, Sonny Bradley headed back across goal but Elliot Lee could only head straight at the keeper from pointblank range.

Injury forced off the industrious Alan McCormack and, before Town could bring Luke Berry on, the Bantams should have equalised as Nathaniel Knight Percival inexplicably failed to make contact at the far post with the goal gaping from Hope Akpan’s near-post flick.

Bradford started to cause the Hatters some problems on the sticky surface, but Luton finished the half the stronger with Berry having two efforts blocked and James Collins sending a near-post header over and seeing a deflected effort cleared as Town led at the break.

Another huge opportunity came Luton’s way just two minutes in to the second half as Berry dug out a wonderful cross but Danny Hylton could only head just over with the goal gaping.

Bradford managed the conditions better in the second half as their high balls forward into the swirling wind made it difficult for Town’s defence.

A dangerous cross was only just cleared by Town on 52 minutes, while Collins twisted and turned well but could only fire over moments later.

Roared on by a vociferous home crowd Bradford proceeded to press for a leveller in worsening conditions brought on by Storm Gareth.

Captain Akpan burst forward and fired wide on 57 minutes as the game proceeded to open up. A long ball over the top caught out fresh sub Dan Potts as Eoin Doyle sped away but James Shea smothered well at his feet.

Tireless Town continued to harry with every inch of energy which allowed Harry Cornick to get in behind but his effort deflected away for a corner.

Sub Billy Clarke and Mpanzu clashed at the death but determined Town held on to claim a decisive victory.
