CEO SWEET UNDERWENT SURGERY DAY BEFORE JONES’ DEPARTURE
by GEOFF COX
CAmpAign group #saveourtown have urged followers to "keep calm" after it was announced on Friday that a new date has been requested for the newlands park planning decision.
Luton Town Football Club and its property arm, 2020 Developments, have written to Luton Borough Council asking for the date be delayed "in the short term".
The Newlands Park planning application was due to go before the council’s development control committee on January 30 after an historic decision on Wednesday saw permission granted for Power Court, 2020’s other regeneration scheme. In making the decision, the Hatters said: "We have made consideration of our available resource in regards to executive time and involvement of board members, that our interest, both on and off the pitch, are best served by delaying the Newlands committee date in the short term." #saveourtown, who have been campaigning for the approval of both Newlands Park and Power Court, say there is nothing to be concerned about. Chairman Nigel Green said: “We’d like to urge Lutonians not to view this as a problem in terms of the strength of the Newlands Park application. It is not. It’s merely a resource issue. “It was clear that January would be a busy month when the two committee dates were announced last year because, in football terms, they fell within the busy transfer window period. Of course, in this time the club has also unexpectedly seen its manager depart, while it is on public
record that CEO Gary Sweet has also had surgery. “It makes sense to defer the decision to a time when these football issues are not a concern. “We’d simply refer people to the comments made by councillors when approving the Power Court application. They complimented 2020 on that plan being the most comprehensive they have ever seen and we are in no doubt that they will say the same thing about Newlands Park. “We waited decades for the hope that Power Court has now given us, so it’s worth the wait for a few more weeks to get the job done, and done right. “Keep calm and trust in 2020 to deliver a bright new future for our town.” Luton Town FC's directors (2020) were applauded by supporters around the stadium on the 20th minute of Saturday's match against
peterborough Utd at Kenilworth Road in appreciation of the successful planning consent for power Court obtained at last week's council meeting. The club said after the game: "It was a touching moment which we appreciated greatly and for which we thank you. However, together, we are a team and every member of our wonderful supporter base is on the team sheet. "Without your diligent support we would not have been successful, particularly those special supporters who have helped campaign on our behalf throughout, for which we have huge gratitude. "You provide the inspiration with your devotion to the cause which encourages us to be even more determined to succeed. "We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank
you for the wonderful support today for Mick (interim manager Mick Harford), his staff and the team. "It's amazing how much more successful a team can be when no individual takes the credit." Before last week's Power Court decision, #saveourtown supporter Paul Mercer, the boss of Luton Live/s Promotions, spoke about the regenerative prospects of the town's nightlife. He said: "As someone who works hard with our team to improve the image of Luton from albeit from a musical and event perspective, I am really hopeful that the Power Court and Newlands Park plans are approved and regenerate Luton, creating jobs and opportunities that aren’t currently available while helping boost the town in a creative and sustainable way. "It’s important to see how things link together and how developments like this are rarely for one party's benefit and rather are for the benefit of the town itself. I can see how these developments will benefit us all from lowly local promoters to nightlife enthusiast and from local supporter to diehard travelling fan. "It's time to shake off the shackles of a negative past and look to positive future image." And Jeff Horton, owner of the iconic The 100 Club, said that in the current economic climate for gig/concert spaces, it’s wonderful news that Luton and the football club have been granted planning permission for a new 1,800-capacity music venue as part of a major regeneration scheme at Power Court.
A new #saveourtoiwn banner has been popping up all over town, including main roads and roundabouts and at rehearsals for the griffin players' pantomime Alice in Wonderland at Luton Library Theatre.
