Oil dumper slips up after being caught on CCTV A MAN from Dunstable has been fined more than £2,450 after being caught on CCTV flytipping used motor oil and engine oil filters in French’s Avenue, Dunstable. David Roe of hurlock Close, Dunstable was caught after a business based in French’s Avenue got in touch with Central Bedfordshire Council to say that they had film evidence of the flytipping. Council officers reviewed the CCTV footage, which revealed that the waste was illegally flytipped from a vehicle driven by Mr Roe. When interviewed, Mr Roe confirmed that he recognised the waste and that he had fly-tipped on two separate occasions. he also said that he had fly-tipped around seventy 20-litre containers from August to December 2017 outside the council’s household Waste Recycling Centre in French’s Avenue. Mr Roe, who works as a mobile car service engineer, moved to Dunstable in August 2017. When he visited the council’s tidy tip in French’s Avenue, he was told that they could not allow disposal of this type of waste.

Despite the warning, Mr Roe continued to try and dispose of his business waste and would leave the motor oil and filters outside the tidy tip gates. Mr Roe attended Luton Crown Court in January 2019, and was found guilty and fined a total of £2,453. Jeanette Keyte, head of Community Safety, Parking and Programmes at Central Bedfordshire Council, said: “Fly-tipping is a selfish crime that affects everyone, and costs local tax payers thousands of pounds to clear up every year. “In this particular case, the potential environmental risk posed by the abandoned waste could have had a catastrophic effect if the liquid had leaked into the surrounding countryside. “Dumping waste in this way is hugely irresponsible. Mr Roe had an obligation to his customers, who had paid him to dispose of their waste correctly. By bringing this case to prosecution, we have shown that we will take action against any business that illegally disposes of their waste. “We would like to sincerely thank the local business who supplied us with the CCTV evidence which assisted us in securing this prosecution.”

Government boost for Biggleswade station The Government has announced that Biggleswade Station will receive a share of £300m of funding to improve accessibility. The new funding will help thousands of people every day in North east Bedfordshire use trains more easily to get to work, to access vital services, to travel across the country, and to visit family and friends. This follows an extensive campaign, over many years, which culminated in local stakeholders preparing a bid in 2018, supported by Alistair Burt MP and backed up with individual representations from almost 100 constituents and a petition submitted by the Bedfordshire Rail Access Network campaign group. North east Bedfordshire MP Alistair Burt said: “I am absolutely delighted that the Government has chosen Biggleswade Station to

receive this funding. Local campaigners have worked tirelessly for years drawing attention to the struggles faced by those who have difficulties using the station. This funding will help to create an obstacle free, accessible route from the station entrance to the platform. “There is well evidenced support from the community for these proposals, and I will work with the Council, Govia Thameslink and campaigners to ensure the plans are made public as soon as possible so that station users will have a chance to be involved in their development.” Nusrat Ghani, Transport Minister, said: “everyone should be able to access our rail network and I am pleased to announce that Biggleswade will now become a fully accessible station in the next stage of the programme.”

The part that Luton Town fans have played in the football club’s successes over the past year must not be underestimated.

That’s the view of hatters chief executive Gary Sweet, who this week praised the “passion and patience” of supporters during the long process before plans for Power Court and Newlands Park were given the green light by Luton Council.

Sweet made his comments in his introduction to the season ticket brochure for the 2019-20 campaign.

he wrote: “As I’m writing this there are just a handful of league games remaining this season. “There’s still a way to go until we all find out whether we will be playing football in League One or the Championship next season,
