Editors Note As the first issue of Delish, ‘Love at First Bite’ will provoke discussion around links between food, love and fashion.

Love at First Bite explores a variety of themes from favourite flavours, date night dinners, comfort snacks and heartbreak foods to addiction, aphrodisiacs, guilty pleasures and mixing sex with food. In our main feature article, Delish spoke with innovative designer Leeann Huang about her avant garde, edible designs as well as her love of food that is consistently reinforced in her work. She doesn’t play safe with her stylish, good enough to eat garments and discusses how since childhood food and love have always been a part of her language. In other spreads we discuss one of the most loving days of the year, ‘Valentines Day’ as well as first date fashion and the joys of making a mess in our ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ editorial. Juggling a work\life balance, fashion student India Thompson directs us on how to survive a fashionable life while living on a student salary to create the trendiest snacks, dishes and refreshments.

ased in Greenwich, Fashion Promotion Student at Ravensbourne, India Thompson talks us through her favourite and tastiest meals over a gorgeous home-cooked dinner with our Editor in Chief. Young and talented with a desire to succeed in the fashion industry, India shares her student/fashion/work/ food life balance with Delish.

As a fashion student, how do you juggle studying, looking your best and cooking your favourite meals?

I don’t to be honest! Finding the balance is a constant task but I like to sometimes have an evening to myself where I get my laptop out have a glass of wine and cook my one pot sausage dish. It’s a cheap student meal and delish so win win!

Have you always had an interest in fashion as a child and growing up?

That’s an easy one - yes! I used to be obsessed with what clothes I wore for certain occasions, say if strictly come dancing was on I had to wear a special 23

dress for it and I lived in a pink ra ra skirt that gave me such confidence I barely took it off (still have kept it to this day) Another important fashion memory is was dressing up and designing clothes for my Barbie’s. I loved that creativity fashion allows I think.

What makes the fashion industry so interesting according to you?

I think the sense of playfulness - it’s a bit mad and I like the lack of rules. As a fan of art and how that’s a way to comment on the absurdities of life I feel fashion does the same but on a day to day scale.

How do you take your coffee?

Preferably with a dash of milk, no sugar. I need it strong to survive the day!

Do you think that food can be fashionable?

Yes I mean it’s like what springs to mind is avocados , someone decided they were ‘trendy’ one day and the

rest is history. That’s a fashionable food of sorts now.

What is your go-to dinner when you don’t have a lot of time on your hands?

Unashamedly the carbonara from M&S - pop it in the microwave and there’s the dinner.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve eaten?

I’m not that adventurous so probably something like Octopus.

If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

That’s such a hard question - it’s a toss up between spag bol with garlic bread or a chicken curry. Basically both are soul food to me.

What is your opinion on pineapple on pizza?

Personally I don’t mind it - the ham and pineapple combination somehow works, saying that it’s not my go to choice.

If you could taste a song, what song would it be and why?

Sweet like chocolate was what first sprung to mind. The name says it all!

Dinner conversations with cooking fanatic couple, Joanna and Keith.

I

t is said that the kitchen can bring you together or tear you apart. Joanna and Keith take us through how cooking up love in the kitchen can bring you together.

Generally cooking is just left to one partner in the relationship, for example, lots of couples generally share roles like ‘she cooks, he cleans’, while this does divide household responsibilities in a well-mannered way, it doesn’t build that relationship.

After being together for many years cooking can get quite tedious and just be seen as a ‘job’. However, Joanna and Keith turn this into a fun, memorable experience that both can share. It can sometimes be hard for couples to make time for one another with both having full-time jobs it can be difficult to find time to date to continue to strengthen your relationship and spend time with your loved one.

Cooking together sets down a time where you can both be together and enjoy each other’s company, this memory making experience builds on trust and can be a fun period to spend together. Although you may be thinking this will cause arguments and 34

stress levels may rise from following instructions and telling each other what to do, however, if you set the atmosphere to play some relaxing music, light some candles and dim the lighting, you are setting the scene for a romantic evening of intimate cooking.

An evening of close cooking also strengthens your relationship and creates a personal connection.

Cooking together creates something that just you two can share on an intimate level bond. It’s a learning curve not only to learn new recipes and dishes but to learn more about each other, this way you can really help build communication between you both and learn about each others cooking skills.

At the end of the day, the most important thing is to have fun together! Despite there may be times when you do get on each other nerves in the kitchen by not following the recipe or disagreeing, remember to look past this and just have fun. Even if the meal doesn’t plan out to what you thought at least you both had a laugh. Then all that’s left to do is enjoy the meal together if you ask me that’s ‘relationship goals’.

Recipe for Love (love inspired home gyros)

1. Start with turning the oven on up to 180 on a fan oven. Ingredients needed for two, a portion of chips, 1 onion, 1 iceberg lettuce, 1 pepper, 1 pack of breaded chicken, 2 pittas.

Begin to place chips into the oven for 25 minutes.

2. Then gather the chicken to place onto an oven tray and place the chicken into the oven for 20 minutes.

5. Then place the pittas on the grill for just a couple of minutes to slightly warm them up.

6. Once the timer is up get chicken, chips and pittas out of the oven and place them into a bowl and onto the table as well as any sauces and dips you may want to add to your gyros.

3. Get out the chopping board as well as the vegetables. Gather the lettuce, onion and pepper onto the chopping board and begin to chop up the veg.

4. Place all of the chopped vegetables into plastic tubs to separate and place onto dinner table.

7. Begin to fill up your pitta with the veg, chicken and chips.

entral St Martins fashion graduate Leeann Huang combines her love of food with her passion for fashion design to create an unconventional mixture of techniques and use of materials that dishes up a unique fashion platter.

Huang utilizes food as a main element to create her pieces from glazed oranges and walnut beading to chocolate and jelly moulded knitwear. Huang reveals her processes and takes us on a journey from her childhood inspirations to her time studying at Central St Martins.

Did you always know you wanted to be a fashion designer or was there a turning point that led you on the path you are on now?

I always enjoyed making things and honing a craft and fashion just was the best fit for this.

Fashion and the culture around it became more and more fascinating to me as I got older.

What was your background and heritage like before starting at Central St Martins?

I’m Taiwanese and I grew up in California before going to London for Uni. What was your experience like studying at Central St Martins, how did your studies push you to become the designer and creative you are today?

I was at Saint Martin’s for 7 years, so I feel like I really grew up there. It definitely is a very open and abstract curriculum so I definitely pushed myself to figure out who I was, what I liked and valued. I think there’s a discipline and work ethic that comes with that that really helped me. The tutors really care and become invested in your work and their advice was always essential to me.

What do you enjoy most about being in

London? How has London influenced your work?

I think the openness to creativity here is very exciting and liberating. In America, the creative industry is far more commercially motivated and that can be good in some ways and very draining and limiting in others. In London, there is a more can-do attitude and creativity is more motivated by culture and joy which feels more conducive to innovation.

A lot of your garments, specifically your BA graduate collection, are constructed with detailing of edible foods, what is it about food that inspires your design process?

I really just love food and the visual aspect and pageantry in its presentation. It’s very easy to connect it to fashion and who doesn’t love to eat?

Tell us what it was like for you growing up, was food, cooking and meals an important factor throughout your childhood that continues to influence your practice today?

I think since birth I’ve always been told I have a very insatiable hunger. Growing up in a Chinese household, affection is always communicated through actions like feeding and cooking for

each other. I think a common greeting is always, “are you hungry?” Before “how are you?” Sharing food with my loved ones has always been part of my language.

Favourite food spots in London?

I do love Bao, Pleasant Lady Jian Bing, and Sunday Café.

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve eaten?

I had Chicken Sashimi at a Yakitori place before.

Tasted like oranges strangely.

How do you take your coffee?

I don’t! I have a heart condition so I can take any caffeine. I do take my tea black. Very plain, no sugar no cream.

What is your opinion on the myth that people in the fashion industry don’t eat, specifically models?

Models definitely love to eat. At least my friends do. I think the attitude, culture and fitting stances are a lot healthier than they were 15 years ago for sure.

If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

I could eat pho for the rest of my life. Easy, light, fresh and heartwarming.

Valentines Day A sweet history behind the evolution of Valentine’s Day and why it is centred around food and fashion.

ne of the most loving times of the year is Valentine’s Day and generally, we celebrate with a lovely meal, chocolates, sweets and love. For those of us in relationships, Valentine’s Day is an excuse to splash the cash and truly show your significant other just how much they mean to you. A lot of us show our love through food such as cooking a special candle lit dinner, treating your partner to an evening out or gifting them heart shaped sweets. To truly spread the love all food is coloured red or carved into the shape of a heart. The pressure is on when it comes to thinking of the perfect gift for our loved ones, but why do we always fall back on our faithful treat, chocolate.

In 1861, Richard Cadbury was inspired to sell chocolate on Valentine’s Day, packaged in heart shaped boxes decorated with rose buds and cupids, a new tradition was born and ever since chocolate has been the number one most bought Valentine’s 72

Day gift. Back in the 1800s, it is said that doctors prescribed chocolates to soothe and calm the nerves of their patients, chocolate was also thought to be an aphrodisiac but science has proven it is not, despite this it most definitely contains some aphrodisiac qualities. Chocolate never fails to provide pleasure to the palette and boost someone’s mood.

Notwithstanding chocolate being our favourite tasty treat for Valentines, there are plenty of other favourable foods and dishes on the top list to have on Valentine’s. If you are treating your partner to a meal that you are cooking yourself, in my personal opinion you can’t go wrong with spaghetti and meatballs.

This perfect dish is easy to cook and prepare and is best eaten and enjoyed in Lady and the Tramp style. Enhance the romance by dimming the lighting, playing some sweet melodies on Spotify(there are hundreds of Valentine’s playlists to choose from), lighting a candle and enjoying the intimacy and the comfort of being in each other’s presence.

However, the only way to be Valnetines’s ready is with the perfect statement style that will stun your partner. Find your perfect fashionable ensemble to wear on Valentine’s Day, this means you should be pulling all the stops out on this love full day. For the ladies out there, we advise dressing in the perfect contrasting colour combination, pink and red, the ideal romantic colours. Pair your daring outfit with a set of Christian Louboutin stilettos, with the gorgeous red sole, as well as cover yourself top to toe in simple but elegant jewellery to add glamour and sophistication. And not forgetting the men, it is important to look your most dapper on this special occasion, so this means to bring the suit out, bow tie and all to impress and show your lover just how much they mean to you. However, for every couple and relationship, you all have your ways of showcasing your love to one another so if this isn’t dressing up but laying in your pj’s, ordering a takeaway and watching a movie together you go right ahead and do that, but it is always nice to get dressed up, especially 73

Let’s not forget as much most of us love Valentines, there are always some ant valentines out there, whether you are single or don’t celebrate Valentine’s Day it’s still a day to celebrate something. As Valentines Day has evolved, it has now turned into a day where we simply just appreciate our loved ones whether that’s family, friends or colleagues.

This day of sharing love is not about romantic love or traditional fairytale love, the younger generations are celebrating just loving everyone and it should be a day of appreciation. So share the love with friends watch some films go out for dinner and do something fun. Some empowering and friendship focused movies Delish recommends for those single souls that will make you feel grateful for being single are ‘Heathers’, ‘Booksmart’ and of course ‘Little Women’.

My Chocolate Romance Editor in Chief, Rose Monaghan, talks through her love and addiction to one of the most chocolatiest chocolate, Nutella.

am a chocoholic. Growing up my go to breakfast was always Nutella on toast before I would walk to school and ever since I have had an addiction to Nutella, Shrove Tuesday was always the best growing up knowing that I could have Nutella on my pancakes and I know I’m not the only one who loves Nutella on their pancakes. Nutella made from cocoa and hazelnuts is one of the most popular chocolate spreads in the UK with more than 11 million jars being bought each year(The Daily Mail). This statistic shows how much the UK loves chocolate and it is said that chocolate is ‘the food of love’ its associated around birthdays, Christmas and Valentines Day, times of the year where we celebrate love. The saying that ‘love is sweet’ does ring true people are more romantically inclined when it comes to chocolate. My passionate addiction to Nutella has got better over time but it was not a healthy one, but I am one of many, others also experience an internal war with themselves over their food obsessions such as biscuits, crips, cookies and cake.

Why is it that we become obsessed with food that 74

is so bad for us? Science states that it is possible to eat compulsively just like smoking or doing drugs.

A scientific study concluded that when questioning obese and overweight subjects if they are addicted to food after explaining the definition of addition, 29% of individuals claimed that they were addicted. No one chooses to be an addict. Addiction involves three main components, intense craving, loss of control over the object of that craving and continued use or engagement despite bad consequences. Having a midnight run for a bowl of ice cream is a craving and sign of loss of control when it comes to food. However, we don’t hear very often of people having a midnight run for some carrots or celery. This is because high sugar and fatty foods trigger pleasure in the brain.

To overcome an addiction is to simply gradually reduce your intake of the said addicted food in my case Nutella. Eventually, it would be to turn to alternative chocolates such as chocolate with fruit or dark chocolate rather than white or dairy milk.

Getting out of an unhealthy addiction/ romance with food is a hard one but a necessary choice to get out of these unhealthy habits.

plitting her time between Essex and Norwich, health and fitness pioneer, Hannah Bradley has repeatedly endured a love and hate relationship with food and fashion. Back in 2018 Hannah began her journey to achieve self-love and a healthy balanced relationship with food. Hannah has shared her stories behind her self love secrets and how she escapes from everyday life through cooking her favourite dishes and wearing empowered fashion.

Tell me about your background and your love/ hate relationship with food before beginning your journey?

As a child, I loved food. I wasn’t fussy at all! I was open to trying all sorts of things and there was nothing I enjoyed more than going out for dinner with family and friends. Growing up, I started to seek comfort in food, using it as a way to process the trials and tribulations of teenage life. This led to binge eating and subsequently, weight gain, culminating in 2018 - when I started my journey.

Did your unhealthy relationship with food cause limitations on your fashion choices?

Absolutely! I despised shopping trips with my friends because many popular retailers (at the time) either didn’t stock my size, or had limited quantities available. I was unable to develop a true sense of style because of this. I also felt an inherent need to hide my body. Nothing tight, nothing shortsleeved, always elasticated - I had so many ‘rules’.

It was exhausting. I love that mid/plus size clothes are widely available now, at least, more so than when I was growing up. All bodies are beautiful and representation is vital; perhaps if I had it, I wouldn’t have felt so ashamed of mine.

What was the turning point that prompted you to begin your health and fitness journey?

I started to struggle with everyday activities, such as walking to school. I was showing signs of poor health at just 18 years old. My breathing was laboured, I rarely exercised and doing my makeup felt like running a marathon. My mental health suffered as well. I wanted to better myself; both physically and

mentally.

Ever since beginning your journey have you fallen in love with cooking and making your own dishes?

I’ve actually always loved cooking, but now I have such a richer understanding of flavours and techniques since beginning my journey.

What specific changes have you made to your lifestyle and diet?

I gave up meat and fish and now follow a completely vegetarian diet. It was tough at first but I don’t regret a thing. I’ve learnt so much about alternative protein sources and I love nothing more than discovering new veggie recipes! As for my lifestyle, I’ve developed a passion for running; either in the gym or outside (depending on the weather!). It feels so freeing and not to mention, it’s great for mental health.

How has being a vegetarian impacted your lifestyle choices?

I feel more inclined to live sustainably. I buy cruelty free/vegan/environmentally friendly products wherever possible, recycle and upcycle. I favour walking over driving. I’ve entirely overhauled my lifestyle as a result of changing my diet; the way I view the world is so much different - I value each and every facet of living.

What types of struggles have you dealt with on your journey to loving yourself? What have been your greatest obstacles?

The mental shift was and continues to be the hardest part. Physically, I changed so fast but it was as if my brain couldn’t quite catch up. I would still buy clothes in my old size; drowning my body in excess fabric. I would convince myself the scales were lying to me. Attempts to explain how I felt were futile. When I started my journey, I never imagined myself having this issue. My entire existence up until late last year had been defined by my weight.

Frankly, I didn’t know who I was, and that was the problem.

What keeps you motivated to continue to eat healthily and stay in shape?

I’ve fallen in love with living again which I consider my motivation. I try not to focus on ‘clean’ eating or consistent exercise. I’m working towards eating intuitively and exercising for enjoyment. Life shouldn’t feel restrictive.

What benefits has your social media page(@ healthwithhannah__) had on your journey promoting body positivity, self-love and healthy relationships with food?

I’ve been able to connect with some lovely people who are on similar journeys to me. I love sharing recipes, stories and helpful resources. Without my page, I doubt I’d feel as comfortable in myself as I do now. Having a network of support is so important, and I’ve been lucky enough to extend mine online.

How do you think people need to change their views about weight loss?

I consider diet culture to be a significant factor in the way weight loss is understood. It’s toxic and harmful and should have no place in society. Self worth should not be defined by pounds and inches. I anticipated that all my body related problems would simply cease to exist when I reached my goal - they did not. I became hyper critical - comparing myself to others more than ever before. I’ve now learnt that weight loss does not equate to happiness.

What do you want other people who are struggling to attain a healthy relationship with food to know?

It will get better. Food harmony isn’t far off. Your journey is personal to you; shut out any harmful external influences. Though it may not feel like it, you make progress every day. Do not lose hope. Your future self is waiting with open arms.

How has this journey made you learn to love yourself?

I’m so much more appreciative of my body and what it does for me. I’m grateful to be able to live such an active life. I’ve found myself, as cringey as that may sound. I no longer allow numbers on a scale to define me.

Flesh and Buns in Covent Garden for the best Japanese food and fluffiest Bao buns!

Halo Burger at Pop Brixton - the BEST vegan burgers Holy Carrot in Knightsbridge - delicious, innovative vegan food. Not to mention, the interiors are stunning.

Do you follow food trends as seen on Tik Tok for example the little moons craze?

I wouldn’t say I actively follow food trends on TikTok, but if something looks good I’m open to trying it. For example, my sister and I had a bash at the viral feta pasta. I must admit, I did scan the freezer aisles for Little Moons a little too avidly - I blame lockdown boredom!

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve eaten?

I’m a huge fan of Sauerkraut and honey, a combination my housemates find a little strange.

Don’t knock it until you try it!. It’s great with houmous on toast.

Do you think that food can be fashionable?

Absolutely! I definitely consider it an art form. I’m constantly snapping pictures of my meals and posting them on Instagram. There is definitely a widespread appreciation for good-looking food.

How do you take your coffee?

Always iced, always with plant milk and always extra sweet!

If you had to eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

Sushi - without a doubt!

Your favourite recipe and why you love it?

No one makes avocado toast quite like myself enough said!

It may be hard to get out of monotonous routine that you are both stuck in, you may need a fresh start or some spicy tips to give your relationship some momentum. Secondly, another way to spice up your relationship is to get cheesy, wether that is with a cheesy comment or gesture. This is a great way to have fun and mix up things in the bedroom to add a little flavour to your sex life.

Another spicy secret that will definetely win over your loved on is to always have a sweet touch. Be gentle, feed each other food, fruit is one of the best foods to use in the bedroom, strawberries, slices of mangos, a juicy option is always a good one. Its important to be slow and take your time to look and be as sexy as possible. Keep things sweet and gentle and always remain eye contact with your partner.

Communication is key in the bedroom as well as focus, you should devote your attention to your partner, this attention will result in being a better lover to your partner. This is crucial to truly understand what your partner likes and dislikes, its not always about recieving pleasure, it is about giving it and listening to what is good and what is not. However if you and your partner have mastered the rules of intimacy, communicate well and want to spice up the relationship further its time to turn things up a notch. Go all out and try different foods, cover yourself in chocolate or honey, but make sure to use foods that wont have pieces breaking off that will go into places you dont want it too. Also another rule especially using fruit make sure you wash them.

Anything spicy as things like chilli and wasabi do not belong anywhere near the genitals and could cause burning, anything that will burn your mouth will also cause a burn down there. Defiently avoid grainy foods, such as salt or sugar, if you have ever felt the effects of sand from the beach in your swimwear you can understand why. Other than those specific foods, go all out and try a variety of foods in the bedroom.

Playing with food in the bedroom is fun, experiemental and puts your relationship through new levels. But be safe and make it playful, you’ll be amazed to find out how pleasureable playing with food and love really is.
