Meet the Newsletter Committee "My name is Priscilla Marin. I come from a home where the academic world is foreign, as my parents attained only a second-grade education and to this day I fill the role of their cultural, social, and linguistic navigator. Growing up, my family of six had infrequent access to dental care, which ignited my passion to become a dentist. I strive to implement my diverse cultural awareness to bridge gaps within oral healthcare. Being a part of the Newsletter committee has been such a unique and rewarding experience that I cannot wait to further contribute."

"Hello! My name is Sarah Badawi. I am from California and graduated from the University of San Francisco in 2019 with a B.S. in Biology. I am one of the editors and I make games/puzzles for the newsletter. I wanted to be a part of the newsletter committee because it would allow me to contribute outside of the classroom and develop my interpersonal skills. T eres a Sunshine kissing your skin. Lounging by the water with not a care in the world. Ice cream melting down your fingers, and watermelon juice dripping down your face. D2s, D3s, and D4s know just how quickly time can pass. To them, summer is a time of joy, relaxation, and fun — a much-needed break before the school year starts again. For incoming D1s, summer is not just a break from responsibilities — it marks the beginning of their careers. All of their hard work has finally come to this moment. And that can be scary, especially in a brand new state where you don't know anyone.

To the Class of 2025, this newsletter is for you. Here, you'll read about foods to eat in Utah, hear advice from upperclassmen, and learn about an organization that will welcome you with open arms. May this relieve any anxieties you have about this new horizon. On behalf of ASDA, we are so excited to meet you and hope you enjoy this newsletter.

what is asda?

ASDA stands for the American Student Dental Association, which is a national student-run organization that protects and advances the rights, interests, and welfare of dental students. Each of the 66 dental schools within the U.S. and Puerto Rico has an ASDA chapter, which is grouped into eleven districts. The Roseman chapter is part of District 10, along with ASDOH, Midwestern, OHSU, UNLV, Utah, and UW. Automatic ASDA membership is granted to every dental student at Roseman.

ASDA functions at Roseman through four main pillars: advocacy, service, dentistry, and activities.

Advocacy is demonstrated throughout the year during National Meetings. In the past, our chapter has participated in the National Leadership Conference, District 10 Conference, and Annual Session. The purpose of each meeting is to educate members on current issues within the dental profession. Last year, our Legislative Lesion Olivia Kalloo (Class of ‘22) achieved ASDA’s 2020-2021 Excellence in Advocacy Engagement Award.

Service is actively giving back to our communities by providing resources and volunteer work. This year, we plan to work with local organizations, such as Geraldine E. King Women's Resource Center, Fourth Street Clinic, Utah Refugee Connection, and many more. Last year, our Community Outreach Chair Ella Cruz (Class of ‘23) received the National ASDA of Service Award by collecting 2,357 items of food and clothing.

Dentistry refers to aspiring and current dental students. Our chapter actively continues to reach out to several predental students through Pre-dental Day and our mentorship program, providing guidance and advice throughout their application cycle. Current dental students have benefited from ASDA resources, such as study materials to prepare for the Integrated National Board Exam, information on licensure, and opportunities to network with future employers.

Lastly, activities! As an incoming student in the midst of a pandemic, I only experienced a version of ASDA that was only made available through a monitor.

However, we have a fun year packed with exciting activities. Key events to look forward to are the Cuspid Cup, a schoolwide relay competition between each class, Fall Vendor Fair, an opportunity to meet dental vendors to learn about their products, services, and employment opportunity, and Porcelain Ball, essentially a dental school prom.

Our organization is composed of 22 passionate individuals who work hard to bring our student body the experiences and resources to enhance their dental school experience. We hope you are all excited to learn more and become involved with RUASDA!

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED SO FAR ABOUT DENTAL ANXIETY Ella Cruz, 2023

I met the patient in the waiting room at what seemed to be the beginning of an average comprehensive exam. When I started to set up the radiographs, I noticed that the patient was very silent and didn't reply to my questions. He started shaking every time I put an instrument in his mouth. When I had to stop because of his shaking, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath, seemingly disappointed in himself. This was one of the first moments I witnessed dental anxiety. According to a 2017 British Dental Journal article, these patients are most likely to have more decay than the typical patient who regularly visits the dentist, which continues the downhill road of associating pain with needing to visit our office. When individuals say they don't like coming to the dentist, it's not just because they're afraid of what the dentist will do to them; it's because they're embarrassed by the state of their teeth. Dental anxiety can also be linked to other fears, such as claustrophobia or fear of needles.

According to a 2009 Adult Dental Health survey, 36 percent of the population feels anxious going to the dentist. Odontophobia, known as the fear of the dentist, is considered a true phobia, and according to the American Dental Association, around 5-10 percent of the population struggles with this fear. Therefore, it is important for us as dental providers, to do our part to learn how to cope with dental anxiety to better serve our patients. After researching, I would like to share suggestions that I found really stood out to me.

Active communication is very important.

The ability to listen to a patient is a skill set that helps dental anxiety because it enables the provider and the patient to develop a relationship that goes beyond drilling and filling. In fact, a 2020 study in the Dental Journal found that there was a positive correlation with communication and trust and a negative correlation with dental anxiety and shame. Active communication can look like taking more time to explain the procedure or treatment plan.

Another example is asking what elements of their visit the patient looks forward to the least and try to combat that fear specifically. Lastly, communication could be as simple as reassuring words or lightening the mood with a positive attitude.

Use materials/medications that can provide comfort or calmness.

There are many materials to help with stress and it may be a good idea to have some handy when you are in the clinic. I have seen stress balls being used to relieve stress. Some offices have stands for cell phones to distract the patient by watching videos. A recent American Dental Association article had the suggestion of using weighted blankets for the patient to provide a comforting experience. In some cases, anti-anxiety medications such as Diazepam could be recommended for patients to take an hour before procedures.

Other patients could be offered the option of conscious sedation, such as nitrous oxide.

The goal of these materials and medications is not only to complete an appointment comfortably on time but also to showcase to the patient the possibility of what an appointment to the dentist could be for future appointments.

Suggest outside resources.

The patient might not be comfortable talking about their anxiety with you, so one suggestion would be to recommend that the patient talk with a friend or family member who is also your patient and has had a positive experience with you. Another suggestion is visiting the website https://www.dentalfearcentral.org/. Dental Fear Central is an online community for people who have dental anxiety, and the website provides a platform to give tips and offer stories about how they manage their fear. Not only that, but this website has a section reserved for dentists to learn about how they can help manage the patient’s fears.

Throughout my patient’s appointment, I went at a slower pace and always reassured the patient through solid communication and patience. The patient continually said thank you and left grateful. It is important to remember that patients have fears, just like everyone else. If we, as future dental providers, can showcase compassion and a genuine level of care, these small steps could lead to the turning point for patients to overcome or at least manage their fear.

MY SIDE HUSTLE One question that I hear a lot from prospective students is “Is it possible to get a job while in dental school?”

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), the average firstyear cost of private dental school programs is $75,161, so I fully understand where these students are coming from. Dental school isn’t cheap.

At Roseman, one thing you will quickly hear from many students is that it's easy to have a good “work-life balance” (not a phrase I am a huge fan of, but that’s a topic for another time). I thought that it may be possible to have a job while in dental school, so I wanted to explore this possibility.

However, when I talked this over with my wife, she quickly reminded me how hard I worked while trying to get to dental school; at one point, I was taking classes part-time to raise my GPA, while also working two full-time jobs and one part-time job. I had struggled as I spread myself too thin, and I realized that I had to shift my mindset from “dental school is school” to “dental school is my job.” My job while at Roseman is to learn as much as I can to become the best dentist that I can be. That’s when I started to look into what many people called a “side hustle."

Peter Dang, 2023 If you don’t already know, a side hustle is a type of employment that one takes on in addition to one’s full-time job to help supplement one’s income. A side hustle is also different from a part-time job because it's you making the decisions on everything, such as the hours you're working and the amount you’re getting paid. The major benefit of a side hustle that I have found is that I can make some extra cash and make it work around my dental school/study schedule very easily.

So you like the idea of being able to make some extra money that will work with your schedule, but then comes the question, “What can I do?” I would first make a list of options and then narrow it down. Try to see what’s out there by searching “side hustle” and then narrow it down to things based on your skill set and what you’re passionate about. For example, one of my side hustles is building Ikea furniture.

The reasons I chose this particular side hustle for me is (1) I would say that I am pretty mechanically inclined (2) I have tools that will save me time building said furniture because I do my own car maintenance (another way I like to save money) and (3) there’s an Ikea in the Salt Lake Valley, so I know there are people out there who may not want to go through the hassle of building the furniture themselves.

Okay, so I looked up a list of possible side hustles; I narrowed down what I want to do; now, how do I get started?

One of the things you can do is search in local community Facebook Groups, Reddit, or KSL (Utah’s version of Craigslist), or an online platform that already exists like Fiverr or Taskrabbit. I personally used Taskrabbit because Ikea already advertised them so I thought it would be easy to connect me to potential clients.

I found a way to connect myself with people who need help building furniture. I made a profile so that people know who I am and what my skill set is. The next question I came across was, how much do I charge?

Taskrabbit made it easy because I was able to look at others that were doing the same thing I wanted to do and calculate the average of what others were doing.

After seeing what others were charging and knowing how much I would like to get paid (taking into account my costs, like gas, time, and the cut that

Taskrabbit would take for using their platform), I landed on setting my fees slightly above the average of where the market was at. I wanted to make sure that doing this was going to be worth my time and effort.

How did it work out for me? Better than expected! I did something that I enjoyed and got paid for it. I generally was able to build any type of furniture within 20 minutes and charged $30 an hour with the client being billed for at least an hour, per Taskrabbit’s terms of service. After Taskrabbit’s cut at the time, I ended up making about $26. Not too shabby for 20 minutes of work! But I was also able to make my profits grow by building a relationship with these clients by being efficient and courteous, and often they would contact and pay me directly for any future furniture builds. They would also sometimes recommend me to their friends and family, which grew my little business even more.

This particular side hustle helped me grow and find my entrepreneurial side, which I didn’t know I had. I learned how to market myself, manage my time and be efficient, and also learned how to work with clients--all skills that will serve me well when I’m a practicing dentist.

A side hustle takes very little capital to get started but plenty of rewards. You can even have multiple hustles. You can easily start one and see if it's the right fit for you. If not, move on to the next one on your list. I know many people don’t want to invest time and effort if they will eventually fail. Even if you do fail, you may find something else amazing and worth pursuing long-term.

Welcome back, Roseman!

Following a year and a half of virtual happy hours, meetings, and conferences conducted on Zoom we are finally back in person. While we continue to monitor the fluctuating infection rates of COVID-19, our school continues to keep us up to date regarding safety protocols so that all Roseman faculty, staff, students, and patients remain safe. Students are excited to return to some form of normalcy, which includes being together in class, eating lunch in the dental commons, storing food in refrigerators, attending in-person meetings, returning to annual events, and of course receiving free food at lunch & learns.

While there are certainly many negatives associated with COVID-19, one positive aspect we took out of this pandemic is utilizing virtual communication more than ever before.

As we move forward, I am excited to lead our ASDA chapter and enter a “hybrid” year, capitalizing on the benefits of both hosting virtual and in-person events. The class of 2022 is looking forward to gaining competency these next nine months; the class of 2023 is looking forward to advancing their clinic techniques and understanding all there is to the INBDE; the class of 2024 is looking forward to completing their first restoration and experiencing actual dental school in-person.

While we say hello to the new Class of 2025, we say farewell to the Class of 2021. Here are a few words of wisdom these new dentists would like to share with their colleagues...

MUSIC RECOMMENDATIONS PRISCILLA MARIN, 2025

"Would you rather be blind or deaf?"

Even though I am still terrified of the dark, I cannot fathom giving up music, as it catalytically formulates my thoughts and experiences. I had always chosen to live in cities known for their music scenes, like LA and Miami, and when I had decided to attend Roseman, I was slightly concerned about the music industry there. Would my attendance at concerts decline? Fortunately, I am pleased to share the wide array of concerts that will take place in Salt Lake City this fall, which I have listed in order of dates to be performed. I encourage everyone to attend at least one concert during their time at Roseman. Unlike many other states, Utah brings to the table a beautiful scenic background, making outdoor concerts that much more of an experience you will reminisce about years from now.

So, how does music relate to dentistry? Music can influence certain emotions and thought patterns. As future dentists, we should keep this in mind since the majority of us will have music playing at work. As future oral health care providers, we should be aware of the power music can have on our patients and office. It can be used as a tool to connect with, distract, or ease patients, and it also has the potential to create a more personalized and enjoyable dental visit for patients. With that said, I suggest avoiding Screamo music and the silence that leads patients’ minds to focus on the hair-raising noise of the drill!

KOREAN GROUND BEEF BOWLS Teresa Vu, 2024 INGREDIENTS 1 pound lean ground beef 5 cloves garlic, crushed 1 tablespoon freshly grated ginger 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil 1/2 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce 1/3 cup light brown sugar 1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper 6 green onions, chopped, divided 4 cups hot cooked brown rice 1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds

DIRECTIONS 1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add beef and cook, stirring and crumbling into small pieces until browned, 5 to 7 minutes. Drain excess grease.

2. Add garlic, ginger, and sesame oil, stirring until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Stir in soy sauce, brown sugar, and red pepper. Cook until some of the sauce absorbs into the beef, about 7 minutes. Add 1/2 of the chopped green onions.

3. Serve beef over hot cooked rice; garnished with sesame seeds and remaining green onions. This dish pairs well with a fried egg on top, too.
