Something for your Palate...

We all thought we had recovered from the “Freshman Fifteen” of undergrad. Little did we know, dental school was going to challenge us to a second round and turn us into caffeine addicts with our bodies yearning for a constant “fix.” With all the challenges of dental school, it can be very difficult to maintain a healthy diet and regular exercise regimen. There are many benefits we can capitalize on by creating awareness and making small “palate-conscious” changes in our everyday lives.

Walter C. Willett M.D. of Harvard Medical School concludes that people under long term stress are more likely to lose sleep, exercise less and drink more alcohol, all of which can contribute to gaining weight. Therefore, as dental students, we should be proactive against these potential health factors and find ways to counteract them.

Healthy snacks can benefit your energy and performance level. Snacks high in protein or fiber including low fat granola, almonds, peanuts, carrots with hummus, yogurt and fresh fruit are some great ideas for on-the-go or in between classes/patients and taste great too!

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine determined that an adequate daily fluid intake is: About 15.5 cups (3.7 liters) of fluids for men About 11.5 cups (2.7 liters) of fluids a day for women Healthy fats containing omega-3 fatty acids are important in your diet as well, and are also associated with brain function. Deficiencies can result in depression or anxiety. Snack options include walnuts, flax seed and fish oil.

Staying hydrated can be difficult with a busy schedule, but it’s important to choose water and make sure you are getting enough of it- especially to counteract the diuretic consequence of caffeine. No one wants to be a human raisin! A recent study in the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics further confirmed the knowledge that water should be the drink of choice when there is a desire to control weight.

We are all capable of choosing a healthier diet, but implementing it can be challenging. I have found it helpful to follow healthy recipe based social media accounts for new ideas and recipes. I also highly recommend visiting ASDA’s online Health and Wellness segments for more ideas and inspiration. They even have 50 healthy recipe recommendations that can be found at www.bringhealthyon.com.

Implementing techniques and creating habits such as meal prepping can be a great way to save money, time, stress and eat healthy as well. If you are just starting out, make sure to approach it gradually. Start prepping with recipes you already know and just make a couple of days at a time. When you feel comfortable, begin incorporating new ingredients or meals and pick a day to prepare, plan ahead and put it in your schedule.

There are many “fad” diets and meal plans but it is important to find what works for you, your body and personal schedule. Life is a balance and it is important to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle. Bon Appetite!

2017 National Leadership Conference Treasurer: Joell Chen As a first year student, it was a privilege to attend the 2017 National Leadership Conference with Roseman America Student Dentist Association (RUASDA) last fall. NLC was a catalyst for my personal involvement in ASDA and an inspiration for students to grow their understanding and passion for organized dentistry. Over the course of three days in Chicago, we were encouraged to attend a variety of workshops geared toward career planning, personal development, ASDA chapter management, leadership fundamentals, and pre-dental students.

I found that NLC sessions effectively presented information aligned with a dental student’s level of exposure and understanding. We had ample opportunities to consider topics ranging from debt management to career building as new dentists. Many topics are immediately applicable to our student experience. Outside of attending breakout workshops, attendees earned Continuing Education credits, networked with

other dental students, and most importantly, learned about ASDA’s impact and opportunities on a national scale.

We are fortunate to be auto-enrolled as ASDA/ADA members at Roseman CoDM. After experiencing last year’s NLC, I am excited to continue supporting chapter involvement and conference attendance for students to experience “ASDA Fever” and further equip themselves through our organization.

A Guide to Staying Applied as a Bride: 6 Tips to Planning a Wedding While in Dental School Golf Tournament Chair: Kimberly Veltman When my now-husband proposed two weeks before we moved out to Utah for dental school, I was elated.

However, it wasn’t long before the stress of having to plan a wedding while simultaneously trying to succeed in my D1 year set in. This stress was doubled by the fact that I would be going to school in Utah and the wedding was taking place in Michigan. For those of you in a similar position, here are some tips I figured out along the way: 1) Designate a specific person to help you plan the wedding Just as you wouldn’t start a difficult procedure without an assistant to help, it’s good to have a designated person who will be there throughout the wedding planning process. For me, this was my mother-in-law.

Many people hire a wedding planner to fill this position. It is helpful if this person knows you well and is near the location of the wedding and reception venue if you’re planning a destination or out-of-state wedding. Make a habit out of calling and talking to this person often. I would use the commute home once a week to catch up with my future MIL and simultaneously make sure we were staying on schedule with planning.

2) Don’t feel guilty talking about plans for your big day with classmates who are not invited This might sound silly, but honestly for the first several months of school I felt nervous talking about wedding planning with classmates if I knew I wasn’t going to be able to invite them. It took me far longer than it should have to realize these classmates were just being friendly. Wedding planning is an easy topic when you’re trying to get to know someone better who is engaged. Don’t feel pressured to invite every classmate just because they ask how wedding planning is going. Everyone, especially those that have planned a wedding in the past, know that it’s impossible for most people to afford inviting their whole class.

Off the Cusp 3) Use wedding planning as a reward, not a tool for procrastination.

Pinterest can be a great stress-reliver from the pressure of dental school. With minimal amounts of effort to scroll and pin, it’s a great way to come up with ideas without creating any stress. However, it can easily be distracting from school work. There were many times that I had to exercise discipline and force myself to study when my wedding binder was calling my name. From early on, I realized I could only allow myself to Pinterest and plan as a reward after big exams. Having a good study group and friends that keep you accountable with school work helped me keep my focus on maintaining good grades.

4) Plan the big stuff during school breaks When people asked me how wedding planning was going throughout the year, I never really knew how to answer properly. In truth, I wasn’t doing that much wedding planning during school time.

For me, D1 year required much more concentration as compared to undergrad. Luckily, Roseman allows for two sizeable breaks around winter and summer during the first year of school. I took full advantage of those breaks to do most of my planning. Knowing that I wanted to get married in a year’s time, we had the ceremony and reception venues booked before leaving for school. During winter break, we met with the caterer to discuss food, bought my wedding dress, took our engagement photos, and booked our florist. I had the entire month of July to take Part 1 Boards so I took them early and then spent the last month enjoying bridal showers, a bachelorette party, and working on all the last-minute details. If your schedule doesn’t allow for large breaks like we had D1 year, I would recommend trying to create a few smaller breaks and then cramming the big items into those times.

5)Ask and find out the schedule for next year This is a big one. I posted on my school’s Facebook page to hear from upperclassmen about when they believed would be the ideal time to have a wedding following D1 year. In retrospect, I should have also talked to the administration at my school to get an accurate idea of how the schedule might change. We already had our wedding day picked out for half a year when I found out our class schedule had changed a bit from the year previous. It ended up working out fine as we simply moved our honeymoon to November and then returned to school for the start of D2 immediately following the wedding.

6) Don’t sweat the small things. Spend time with your fiancé and get excited!

From every bride I’ve talked to, there is always something that doesn’t quite go as planned. None of it truly matters in the end. Most guests won’t remember your DJ, what your served for dinner, or even what your gown looked like. They will however, remember how happy you looked or how in love the new couple was. Try and remember this when a bump inevitably arises in the road right before your big day. Everything will work out!

The American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) joined forces to take Washington D.C. by storm April 8-10 for the second annual ADA Dentist and Student Lobby Day. More than 1,000 dentists and dental students from all over the country came together to advocate for the dental profession. This multi day event is expected to be one of the largest advocacy events for any health care profession in 2018. Dentists and dental students presented to legislators the various issues impacting dentistry and how current legislation in Washington D.C. will impact the future of the dental profession. The main focus of the event was the opioid epidemic, and discussing various ways Congress members can help combat the epidemic alongside dentists. Attendees also lobbied for student loan programs, repeal of the antitrust exemption for health insurance companies, non-covered services provisions, and increasing access to care for underserved populations. The work that was done at the ADA Dentist and Student Lobby Day impacts the work that dentists and dental students are able to do on a daily basis in private practices and clinics around the country.

ASDA District 10 Conference By: Kyron Larsen

The American Student Dental Association (ASDA), is a national studentrun organization that every dental student should belong to and get involved. The focus of ASDA is protecting and advancing our rights and interests as dental students. I have had the opportunity while being a D1 at Roseman, to be involved with ASDA, and have expanded my knowledge of the dental field and issues directly affecting us as students, and that will directly affect us after dental school.

I had the opportunity to go with ASDA to Lobby at the State and National levels. I was also able to attend the District 10 Conference. This conference is where dental school students from across the West get together and meet others in the profession and in our same position. We spent two days learning from various successful dentists. This was the greatest experience for me as I learned so much; what it takes to succeed after dental school, how to start my own practice, and tips to get me through dental school. One of my favorite keynote speakers was Dr. Howard Farran. he had immense knowledge about dental school and the route we can take after dental school. It wasn’t just all meetings. We had mixers and dinner socials where we were able to meet people and take in the nice Arizona weather. I love going to these events and gaining the knowledge and information to compliment everything we learn while in dental school.

Are male and female dentists valued the same?

It was finally time to go home after a rewarding day in clinic and a full schedule of patients. I headed toward my apartment elevator in my scrubs with “Roseman Dental School” embellished by the pocket. Dragging my backpack over my shoulder, a construction worker asked, “So are you in school to be a dental assistant or hygienist?”

“No, I’m in school to be a…”. “…nurse?”

“No, dentist.”

“Oh like the actual doctor or assistant?”

I would like to think my experience is isolated and rare. But many of my female classmates share similar experiences in one form or another. Female dental students are often mistaken for mid-level providers.

What are the implications of this disparity for the daily life of the female dentist?

Oftentimes, females are underestimated in their capabilities when they pursue professional graduate education. It is evident in lower pay and further reflected when they are mistaken for dental assistants and hygienists, and it can transition into fewer opportunities. If we allow the current stereotype that females in dentistry are typically assistants to continue, then it can limit opportunities for women.

As women in the dental field, transitioning into the real world can be tough. Research shows women are entering the workforce with lower salaries according to an article in the April 2017 issue of the Journal of the American Dental Association.

The article reveals men have historically earned more than woman in medicine, law and dentistry. The study investigated the changes in the earnings gap over the last several decades. In 1990, the Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) Census Data showed that male dentists, lawyers and physicians in the U.S. made nearly twice as much. Male dentists earned on average $143,874, whereas female dentists on average earned $65,744. Still in 2010 an earnings gap persists. The 2010 IPUMS survey showed male dentists earn an average income level of $185,192 while female dentists had an average income level of $120,475. In this study, male dentists earned 53.7 percent more than women, regardless of their education level. Despite this decrease in the earning disparity, increasing access to education hasn’t solved the problem.

Men having higher self-employment and ownership of their own practices may be a factor influencing the gender earning gap. Information regarding specialties, practice style and types of patients treated are difficult to measure and were not accounted for, which may also account for some unexplained differences. An article in the April 2011 issue of JADA found that the decrease in the gender earnings

gap over the past decade is largely due to women possessing more observable characteristics similar to men, like number of children, marital status and number of hours worked weekly.

Gender equality in dentistry is improving. The Journal of Oral Research & Review reveals a surge in women dentists. A 2010 ADEA survey of dental school applicants shows an increase in women entering dental school with 15 schools enrolling 51 percent or more woman. An article in the December 2015 issue explained that most dental programs in the United States support gender equality by accepting an equal number of males and females. It also showed half of all dental students are women and 25 percent of them are practicing dentists. The promise of increased room for women in our field is thrilling.

The Civil Rights Movements of the 1960s and early 1970s is when transformation really began for women, revamping what our work could look like. Our roles in the workforce expanded and continue to expand. Society has moved a long way from confining woman in a housekeeper role, yet there is still some improvement to make. Modern-day women continue moving further into the workforce becoming a household contributor, while still caring for their children and partners. Millennials started to define success with a balanced life and more time verses more money, which may also have an effect on the persistent gender gap in income level.

Yet, women must not settle. As woman dentists, we need to be more proactive, assertive, and negotiate for the salary we know we deserve. It is important to get involved in leadership positions in school and in our professional organizations. As we progress we will see more female continuing educational speakers, those who continue their education with a specialty, and dental professors. Men can recognize this disparity and advocate for women in the health care field.

We are living in a culture striving for equality. Women may face lower income offers and fewer job opportunities, but must be aware of this possibility and be unafraid. We must move forward, embrace where our country is today, praise how far it has come and be a part of the continued change.
