Have you thought about an APPRENTICESHIP? An apprenticeship is not just a job. It is about learning skills that you can use for life, earning a decent wage and getting qualified at the same time. If you are aged 16 or over you can do an apprenticeship. If you didn’t get a grade 4 (or C) in your maths and English GCSEs, you can study functional skills as part of your apprenticeship. This means you can achieve a qualification in maths and English as well as your main apprenticeship qualification. The minimum wage for an apprentice aged 1618 is now £4.30 per hour. This is the minimum an employer can pay by law, but many employers will pay more than this. Apprenticeships are available in a wide range of career areas including catering, childcare, IT, hairdressing, construction trades, motor vehicle, business administration and more. Not quite ready for an Apprenticeship? Why not consider doing a traineeship first? A Traineeship is a flexible education and training programme with work experience. Try various types of jobs while improving your English and maths. The programme can last up to 6 months and, although you don’t get paid, it will look great on your CV and you will gain experience. You may be given expenses for travel and meals. If you’ve been unsuccessful when applying for an apprenticeship or other job due to lack of skills and/or experience, then a traineeship could be for you. Your YES Employability Adviser can arrange for you to visit providers to find out more. To see who offers Traineeships in Brighton and Hove go to: www.gov.uk/find-traineeship or see the Traineeship section on page 7. Opportunities for You! - August 21 - Page 6

How do I apply for an Apprenticeship? To find local apprenticeship vacancies, visit: www.gov.uk/apply-apprenticeship and www.apprenticeships-in-sussex.com You will need to create an account and start the application process by completing your profile. You can keep track of your applications. Your YES Employability Adviser can help with this.

Bus ticket discount for apprentices Apprentices can now get up to 25% student discount off many Brighton & Hove bus tickets. To get the discount contact Brighton & Hove Buses on Tel: 01273 886200. (You may need to how enrolment/ confirmation letter/student ID card). You will then be issued with a student card. (Note: Apprenticeships should be registered with the UK Register of Learning Providers)

For the latest childcare apprenticeships see the weekly childcare job vacancy list here: http://bit.ly/2oRsX63 You can sign up to receive this by email each week!
