The 2023 Visual Art Writer in Residence at Roscommon Arts Centre is Jennie Taylor. Writer
Jennie will respond to each show in the curated programme this year. Responses will be available in both hard copy and online. Jennie Taylor is a fiction and arts writer. A graduate of Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology, in 2014 she completed her MA, Art in the Contemporary World, National College of Art & Design. She has published her work in Critical Bastards Magazine, The Stinging Fly and Visual Arts Newsletter. She thinks through material and uses photographed objects as textual tools to accompany texts. Areas of concern include proximity, locality, contemporary pedagogies, theorising empirical knowledge, and fictioning art history. Jennie lives and works in Dublin, Ireland.
Over the past two years, Curator in Residence, Naomi Draper has engaged research interests around the potential of relationships between humans and other matter. The program has looked at the role ‘practice’ and implicated two important characteristics, Play as a generative process and approach to art making, and the potential of Materials as active participatory forms in the production of learning and new knowledge. As the residency enters its third year, Naomi is interested in extending this line of enquiry to look directly at the extraction of material from our natural landscape. It will look at the potential of the natural landscape as archive and repository, holding and preserving information, as well as our human desire to draw from it and will look at issues of ownership and displacement in the building of collections, museums and archives.
This exhibition will look at deep spaces and resources we draw from, it will explore the physical space of underground systems, materials found and extracted there, as well as the human relationship with these particular sites that tend to be a realm of other matter rather than a human space.
As part of this exhibition Nollaig Molloy will present her research carried out in residence at Urbane Künste Ruhr, Germany. In Mining an archive Nollaig will present her continuous and ongoing interest in creating links between landscape, nature and archives. She will speak about her video work ‘Worth Your Salt’ (2020), installed in the arts centre’s gallery space and her recent residency in the mining trade union archive of Das Haus der Geschichte des Ruhrgebiets in Bochum, Germany; a
