HUNTER STREET STATION

Project Type - Infrastructure - Rail

Project Cost - 26.6 Billion (full line)

Duration on Project - 1.5 Years

Project stage - DS1-2

My Role:

My responsibilities changed over time as the Sydney Metro West project developed. Initially working as part of the concept design team on Hunter Street, to then coordinating the development of the station, with a focus on materiality, and documentation delivery. Before simultaneously working as a project coordinator; coordinating deliverables, resourcing, and managing our AEO and contractual requirements, as well as station designer on another station on the Metro West line.

The Project:

The Sydney Metro West project is designed to link the two city centres of Parramatta and Sydney together to enhance connectivity between the two business districts. Hunter Street Station is the final station on the Sydney Metro West line and has been designed as the gateway to Sydney. Due to the tidal nature of the Metro West Line, and the predicted number of patrons using Hunter Street exceeding 35,000 people per hour, intuitive wayfinding and customer experience were at the forefront of the design approach. In addition to this, the design required the incorporation of over-station developments, lead by FJMT Architects, and integration into the existing subterranean links to Martin Place Station and Wynyard Station. Despite all these challenges, the station blended into the existing city networks, and the towers above.

As one of the first to work on the station's design, I worked through the design principles and general configuration of the station, including the configuration of the escalators, which totalled thirty-four at DS1 delivery, tunnel ventilation systems, FOH layouts, and coordinate the BOH layouts.

The VT configuration was critical to the station's success due to the high patronage of the station. Pedestrian Modeling, Human Factors, and Operations coordination were crucial to creating an effective transfer of people from the platform, thirtytwo meters below ground, to the East and West Ground Floor entrances. Due to the expected demand of the station, the VT requirement was high with the East needing twelve and the West requiring ten escalators from entry to the platform Mezzanine. This would be more than any station in the Southern Hemisphere.

As the project developed, coordination with the Development Architects and MEP consultants was crucial to ensure station functionality didn't hinder customer experience. As the design progressed, with all major plant and station items coordinated, my primary focus was on materiality and station finishes.

The final finishes proposal was a series of aluminium fins with a coloured backing. The fin system is augmented in different ways to emphasize depth and scale, depending on the location within the station. The fin depth is reduced from the ground floor down to the platform mezzanine, enhancing intuitive wayfinding. The spacing between the fins is modified depending on the scale of the space. In the large East Atrium, the fins are spaced further apart compared to the more confined western concourse space, where the spacing is reduced. The introduction of a coloured backing exploits the texture and depth of the

façade and results in the colour becoming apparent when viewed head-on but obscured when viewed obliquely. Giving the façades a varying and dynamic character that changes with movement. The simplistic design was chosen as it works with the array of different curves within the station, allowing less material to be used compared to GRC cladding, and giving the station a more identifiable design

AEROTROPOLIS STATION

Project Type - Infrastructure - Rail

Project Cost - 11 Billion (full line)

Duration on Project - 6 Months

Project stage - DS1 (BID)

My Role:

On SSTOM, my primary role was Station Design Lead for Aerotropolis, I also function as Linewide project coordinator. As the design lead, I reviewed the reference design and the design strategy for Aerotropolis CBD before developing a revised proposal. As part of the redesign, I developed the station form, layout, and FOH areas, coordinated with other teams, and present the design to the client, metro, and other stakeholders.

The Project:

This project was a six month bid for the Western Sydney Airport Line, running from St.Marys Station, which was to be redeveloped, to Aerotropolis, the soon-to-be third city in Sydney's three cities development strategy. The line cosisted of six stations, each with their own dedicated teams. The aim of the bid was to deliver the line at a reduced cost compared with the reference design. Working as Aerotropolis Design Lead, the Station Services Lead and I reduced the station's overall volume by 17% and created a station that blended with the proposed masterplan and urban framework of Aerortropolis precinct.

WESTERN SYDNEY AIRPORT LINESSTOM
12. Station perspective from the public domain

The proposed design approach behind the station buildings was to lightly touch the site via the use of lightweight canopies and by reducing the overall mass of each station. Enhancing the use of natural light through glazed or open facades and natural ventilation reduced the overall mass of the stations and focused on an environmental design approach.

The overall design outcome for Aerotropolis Station enhanced the intuitive wayfinding, reducing bottlenecking within the station and improving the customer experience.

SSTOM PROJECT COORDINATION

My Role:

My primary role was Station Design Lead for Aerotropolis, but around 40-50% of my time was as a Linewide project coordinator. As the Project Coordinator, I worked to build strong relationships with the external project managers and other station leads to ensure that resources were allocated correctly and that deadlines were reachable. On a day-to-day basis, I reviewed amended briefs and contracts to ensure we were meeting our contractual requirements, coordinated deliverables and document control, tracked design-related risks, and coordinate resourcing and onboarding. I also ran a project-wide retrospective, the first to be formally conducted on a bid, to understand areas of concern and positive outcomes for future projects to learn from.

MARTIN PLACE STATION

Project Type - Infrastructure - Rail

Project Cost - 1.5 Billion

Duration on Project - 2 Years

Project stage - DS2 - AFC

My Role:

My contribution to the project was to coordinate and design the Southern Hall and lead the Wet Areas package for the project. From the outset, I lead coordination meetings with multiple services and structures teams, produce coordination drawings, conduct design studies, and produce documentation for the Southern Hall. As the project developed, I was also appointed as package lead for wet areas. Each area required multiple design iterations and coordination with stakeholders, material and fixing selection, DDA compliance verification, documentation production, and client update presentations.

The Project:

Martin Place sits as a magnetic center, at the heart of the City of Sydney, an axis between the rich cultural heritage and the story of early Australia on Macquarie Street. Since the 1890’s Martin Place has played a vital role as a significant public space in the heart of the central business district of Sydney. Stacked over two levels under Martin Place, the Southern hall, the site I worked on, is a vibrant place of convergence. Linking multiple subterranean passageways together, offering access to the street above, east to the Eastern Suburbs Railway, down to the Metro platforms, and across to the eastern entry to the MLC.

The Southern Station Entry and Concourse coordination, with the many stakeholders, was a challenge due to the tight deadlines and quality expected from the client. This was made even more challenging due to covid forcing everyone into a new way of working, however, this did not change the expected quality or deadlines. This project was one of the most challenging I have worked on, not only due to short deadlines and comprehension of technical information but because of the design excellence that Grimshaw strives for. It is a project I am sure will be globally renowned once completed.

Working as the wet area package lead came with many challenges, as these areas were neglected for the majority of the project. Once I began to develop the designs in detail, I uncovered an array of issues, including clashes with the structure to access non-compliances to name a few. A redesign was needed for all five unique areas. Due to the limited space within the Martin Place shafts, I needed to design to extremely tight tolerances and ensure I met all Australian and metro Standards. Despite this, it gave me great experience in coordinating, developing, detailing, and delivering of specific spaces within the station and resulted in a design that has been used as a benchmark for other stations.

RCCQ TOWERS

Project Type - Commercial - Towers

Project Cost - 4.9 Billion (USD)

Duration on Project - 6 Months

Project stage - DS1

My Role:

My role on the project, with CL3 as the interior architectural designer, was to develop the interior lobbies and entryways of the office and residential towers, lift lobbies, and the grand ballroom. With the support of William Lim, Founder and Director of CL3, I led the design packages of these spaces, coordinated with various stakeholders, and led in-person presentations to clients and stakeholders, including Moshe Safdie himself. This project gave me great insight into the design process of high-end hotel and residential towers, as well as my first experience leading design packages on a project.

The Project:

Located at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, Raffles City Chongqing was designed in collaboration with world-renown architect Moshe Safdie, who drew inspiration from the region's thousand years of waterway transportation culture to create an image of powerful sails upon the river for Raffles City Chongqing to symbolize the host city’s surging growth. The project entails a shopping mall, office spaces, residential apartments, a luxury hotel, and the iconic sky garden.

Project Type - Commercial - Towers

Project Cost - 4.9 Billion (USD)

Duration on Project - 8 Months

Project stage - DS1

My Role:

When I joined the project it was in the early design phase, so I worked to develop the overall form of the building, its interface with the different levels and laneways in the public realm, and the cladding design. I coordinate the structural design, environmental design, signage, entry lobby, and facades. Additionally, I lead the rapid prototyping of models and visualizations. H Queens was one of a few commercial projects I got the chance to work on at CL3.

The Project:

Situated on Queens Road Central, the heart of Hong Kong's high-end shopping district, the design concept aimed to stand out from the standard Hong Kong skyscraper. This was achieved by its creative cladding design and its distinct cutaway form. The building functions as a series of large open gallery spaces for local artists, high-end retail units on the lower levels, bars, and restaurants including a rooftop bar.
