PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Congratulations Rooty Hill High School – what a wonderful Term 3 we had. Once the rain stopped it was a chance for us to really celebrate the 60th anniversary.
Can I thank all staff, students and families for making the Festival Day and Alumni Dinner so successful? It was wonderful to see so many ex-students and families with strong links to the school join our team.
Can I say a special thanks to the Creative and Performing Arts team led by Melissa Scerri for co-ordinating the community festival and to Conny Mattimore and Janice Stuart for their organisation of the Alumni Dinner? Please see our Special 60th Anniversary Missing Link for more stories and pictures.
As many of you know I had to take extended leave in Term 3 and I want to congratulate Conny Mattimore on her leadership of the school as Relieving Principal.

Thelma Vuki & Melanie Douglas
• We welcomed 5 new teachers to the school in Term 2.
• 10 Beginning Teachers continued to participate in fortnightly Professional Learning and work on their accreditation at the Proficient Level of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, which is a mandatory requirement for all teachers in NSW. This included, writing evidence sets, undertaking lesson observations and meeting with their Peer Teacher Mentors.

I would like to start my message by introducing our new librarian, Mr David Proctor, who has started to manage the school’s library since the beginning of Term 3. Mr Proctor has brought with him years of successful teaching experience in HSIE, passion for reading and commitment to continually improving library services. Welcome on-board Mr Proctor!
Cyber Security
Education is still one of the sectors most at-risk for cyberattack and data breaches. To make sure our school network is safe and secure, I would like to remind all students and staff to practice the following cyber security essentials:
• Password Hygiene – increase password strength and change passwords regularly
• Upgrade the operating systems of BYO devices to the latest version
• Only use school Wi-Fi and Ethernet for learning
Please work with the school’s Technical Support officer or me, should you require additional support to cyber-secure your personal devices at school.
Sun Safety
I hope students have been enjoying playing sport under the school’s new COLA. As the weather is getting warmer and sunnier, I encourage all students to take action to protect themselves when learning and playing outdoor. This includes:
• Wearing sun safe hats, clothing and sunglasses
• Seeking shade during peak UV times
• Wearing SPF 30+ (or higher) sunscreen.
• For more information about sun safety in schools, please visit the link below: https://education.nsw.gov.au/content/dam/maineducation/student-wellbeing/health-and-physicalcare/media/documents/suns-english.pdf

COVID ILS Program – Literacy Legends
Written by Humzah Hussain
The COVID ILS Program is a very helpful program that can elevate your understanding of grammar, punctuation, tense and spelling. This ILSP program allows a few select students the opportunity to participate in one-on-one learning with a teacher. The best thing that I really enjoy about this program is that it is educational and fun at the same time. It can be very chill and easy-going, while still learning about useful things that can help you in your everyday life. When our teacher does a spelling bee, the winner wins a lollipop! These classes have helped me out by improving my writing and grammar skills. Others really want to be part of this program because of more one-on-one learning time, and they can help you discover new editing and writing techniques that will improve your writing and help your academic career. Overall, this program is
something that can really expand your knowledge and understanding.
YEAR 7
Year Adviser Message
Year 7 this term has been involved in a great number of activities around our school with great success. At our earlier assemblies, I challenged them to find an activity that they would push to excel in this term and a number of them already have. Year 7 have settled in well and I look forward to seeing them continue to challenge themselves.

Music last term was really something wasn’t it? Did you guys play anything? If so, you guys are really something! Make sure to keep up the great work in music and to keep pushing forward through hard times. I know you all can do it! Anyways what type of music did you play? And what instrument? Okay, okay but since we are on the topic of music, how was the 60th anniversary’s school play?! It had music and dancing. MY personal favourite has to be when the funny cartoon play happened! Hopefully you enjoyed that day with all the music and thanks to Mr Sumunasekara, also known as Mr S, made the play happen. Without him we wouldn’t have had that in the 60th! Wow what a great last term it has been, keep rocking! :)

Sport
Written by Jordan
Sport last term was spectacular. With a variety of different options, students around the school were able to participate and learn new sports. Soccer being one of them. Year 7 and 8’s boys and girls had the opportunity to play against other teams for almost the whole day! As one of the students who participated, I had so much fun. Being able to play for RHHS was such an amazing privilege. For year 7 sport, we had a series of choices to choose from. From my friends and my own experience, we had so much enjoyment. The teachers even give us a chance to vote on which sports we play which makes it more fun because the students get to
choose which sport, they would like to play for the semester! Sport last term at RHHS was phenomenal!

Deputy Principal Assembly
Written by Ecrin Diler
Last term we experienced our Deputy Principal Assembly! This assembly consisted of many things. We first started with speeches from our Deputy Principal and Year Adviser. Our Deputy principal's speech was where she talked about how excellent we have done this year. We then had our Year Advisers speech AKA Mr Crosilla, he spoke about how Year 7 is coming to an end as well as talking about how great we have done, oh and we can't forget the very “funny” joke that he says EVERY assembly. (Why was the scarecrow outstanding in its field). We were then presented our awards which many students received. These awards were received to students who showed outstanding contributions to school and how they consistently showed above the line behaviour. At last, we had our presentation which had photos about all of the fun times everyone had at school.

This year, Rooty Hill High School celebrated its 60th anniversary!!!! WOOOHOOO!!! CLAPS AND CHEERS!!!!! First up was our starting assembly, when our wonderful principal, Ms Christine Cawsey AM, addressed our whole school. There were also some special guests, including lucky students from Rooty Hill Public School, Minchinbury Public School, Eastern Creek Public School and Mt Druitt Public School. After the assembly, everyone completely knocked their heads out on the rides! There was The Hurricane, Dodgem Cars, The Sizzler and more! Also the amazing activities our very own school put together such as the Escape room, Hennah, Photo Booth, Face Painting, and so much more! Our wonderful Year 10’s put up their own food stalls, selling ice cream, cookies, fairy floss, and so much more food! The food trucks came as well! So much food variety! There was also a concert, performed by so many talented seniors, featuring a circus, instrumentalists and many songs such as the famous “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”. And who can forget the fireworks at the end! They were a wonder and were amazing. They were certainly a wrap for this festival! No one could possibly forget this night. It will forever be in our memories and let’s hope there
will be more festivals like this in the future. Happy 60th

Bell Shakespeare Incursion
Written by Ceylin Diler and Melis Bilgic
Last term we experienced an amazing Shakespeare play with some visitors who were kind enough to visit our school! It was such a great play to experience! Am I right? They also called people up on stage to take part in the outstanding Shakespeare play we were gifted with. We kindly presented them with Rooty Hill High School merchandise which they were pleased to have. We all had a chuckle and they made us all giggle and burst out a laugh! It's surprising how they can keep their act! We were very excited lining up in alphabetical order, standing the urge to get inside. Standing in the sun was worth waiting for a joyful and enjoyable experience. Which we hope to relive again

LOTE
Written by Isabella Ryan – 7D
I enjoyed learning about the different traditions in China, like the Mid-Autumn festival also called the moon festival. Learning about the many activities Chinese does to celebrate the festival. One of my favourites was the lanterns and flying the sky with family and friends. To represent love and praying for each other's happiness. The lanterns light up the night sky beautifully.

YEAR 12
Year Adviser Message
Congratulations to the graduating class of 2022! You did it! Not only were you able to finish your last term of school with grace and poise, but you did it in style and with a bang! You completed in Teacher Vs Student, Colour Run, Year 12 BBQ and Graduation. You submitted your final works and completed your last assessment tasks…EVER. You did all this while making sure you were engaged, respectful, thoughtful and enthusiastic members of the school. Two of the key characteristics of this year group are that you are compassionate and resilient, and these have been evident this term. You put your head down and got the work done. You supported each other, sought feedback on your tasks, studied tirelessly, had fun, and celebrated with each other the successes you have shared. You Dreamed, you Planned, and you did, what you set out to do; graduate high school and achieve your HSC. The only thing left in your path is the final exams. It’s ok to be nervous and a little anxious, this is a good thing, it means it matters to you. Take a breath, re-read the questions and know that we are all proud of you no matter the result. You are not defined by a mark or a number. There is always a path to your destination, sometimes you just need to take the scenic route. I am forever grateful and privileged to have been your Year Adviser and wish you all happiness and success in the future.
Miss Edney Year 12 Adviser
Finalising Major Works
Throughout 2022 Year 12 Visual Arts, Industrial Technology Timber, Design & Technology, Music, Society & Culture and Extension 2 English students designed, constructed, and composed major works projects as part of their HSC studies. The major works act as an in-depth study of a field of interest within the subject course with many students conducting hours of research to effectively guide the conceptualisation of the final product and portfolio of work. The student works were congratulated and celebrated through the Major Works Showcase held at the end of Term 3, where teachers, parents/carers and fellow students were able to witness the talents and passion displayed in each project and performance.

Students vs Teachers
Staff and students competed in a range of sports throughout Term 3. It was an opportunity to unleash their competitive spirit and provide an opportunity for Year 12, in their final term at school, to have fun and unwind. Many students took to the field to test out their skills against the formidable staff team, while other took to the sidelines to cheer their fellow peers on. Year 12 put up a great effort and posted several wins, but the final tally fell in the teachers favour, and they retained the trophy for yet another consecutive year.

University Early Offers
Year 12 students had the opportunity to attend open days, discover tertiary paths through presentations, talks and Q&A sessions, and apply for early offer schemes at a range of universities. With the ability to be accepted based the merits of Year 11 grades, students were able to lock in early entry earlier, alleviating much of the HSC pressures often felt at this time. Congratulations to all students who have been successfully in gaining early entry.
Year 12 Farewell BBQ
For the first time since COVID Year 12 were able to celebrate at the Year 12 BBQ without restrictions. Students had the opportunity to sign each other’s shirts, take photos, say thank you to their teachers and enjoy a sausage sandwich or 2. Thank you to the Hospitality team for catering. For the first time we had a special prize draw for a life size graduation bear affectionately nick names ‘Andy’ by the year group. Lily White was the winner of the draw. Congratulations Lily and thank you for regaling us with the photo updates of Andy’s bus trip to his new home.
Colour Run
Well, what can I say - the Colour Run was one of the most memorable events of Year 12 to date. The opportunity to run around, dance and throw coloured powder at each other and
our teachers was so incredibly fun, and just what Year 12 needed in the final weeks of school to let off some steam and enjoy just being with each other. We would like to thank Mrs Andrews, Miss Munzenberger and Ms Edney for organising and for all the teachers who came out to celebrate with us.

Graduation
The Class of 2022 graduated in style and were able to experience all the RHHS traditions along with a few new surprises. Donning the brand-new gowns, the year groups gift to the school, they entered a packed hall of parents/carers, siblings, friends, family and their teachers, all smiling back at them. Each student was presented with their graduation documents as well as a commemorative stole, something new and unique for this year group for the 60th Anniversary of the school. Year 12 would like to thank all those involved in making their day the best that it could be including, Miss Munzenberger, Ms Edney, Mr Diaz, the Print Room Staff, the CAPA Faculty and Entertainment Crew.
SPORT
Boys Baseball
The Boys Baseball Team played 2 knockout games in Semester 2. A game against Kingswood High School and the other against The Ponds High School. The team was victorious in both matches winning 10-4 and 13-2 respectively. This leads the team into the Combined High Schools Finals Knockouts which saw them up against Hunter Sports High. Unfortunately, they did not come away with the victory, however, a huge effort for the boys to be a part of the finals competition against all sports high schools. Well done.
Open Boys Cricket
The following students participated in the Davidson Shield Open Boys Cricket Competition against Giraween High School on Thursday 28 July:
Aaron Cazier Caleb Peberdy
Sebastian Halteh Daniel Prescott

Art on the Hill – “Milkshakes and Monet”
HSC Open Night
HSC Open Night was a celebration of the success and the excellence achieved by students completing a major project for the HSC in 2022. A solid presentation of artworks by the Year 12 Visual Arts students were on display as they showcased their ‘Body of Work’ to the RHHS community.
HSC Visual Arts - Body of Work
HSC Visual Arts Body of Works explored a range of expressive forms in 2022 from printmaking, sculpture, graphic design and painting. Students need to create an artwork or series that is refined and shows technical skill, layers of meaning and unity. The following is a sample of each student's Body of Work
Written by Isaac Fesseha: My printmaking body of work ‘All Eyes on Me’ explores the concept of self-preservation. The self-portrait series depicts the repeated symbols of both the eye and the button attached, covering, smothering and moving around the face as I navigate through life. The button, a tool used to fasten, symbolises a personal plight to overcome and keep it together, while the eyes are both the onlookers and my analysing self-watching over me. The royal blue ink markings reiterate this meaning as it symbolises stability and being true to myself.

Written by Charlize Iddles: ‘The Departed Lovers’ is an appropriation of Rene Magritte’s ‘The Lovers II’. My aim was to channel my own abstracted exploration of Magritte’s artwork in a sculptural form while playing on relationship themes of rejection, conflict and connectedness.

Written by Nael Salacsacan: I decided to create a series of panels that represents my home country, the Philippines. Clustered homes, unclean waters, terrible climates and air pollution. It wasn’t as I expected but there were places of
peace and freedom in the more rural areas. A place with beautiful lakes, mountains and enriching soil spread across the landscape. At the end of the day, many people are struggling in these densely populated areas and bringing awareness to the viewers about this neglected topic is my goal with my work ‘Reconnection’.

Written by Abigail Dave: ‘Everything Flows’, whether it is a liquid, fabric or a rap flow, but in this case it’s blood. From our noses to our hearts to our hands, blood flows throughout us, it is constant. This work is an insight into humans and the lifeblood of our existence. Blood, a vital part of keeping us alive.

Written by Kaiceryn Cantre: “Who Would You Choose?” shines light on the powerhungry dictators throughout history such as Adolf Hitler, Vladmir Putin and Donald Trump. These dictators crave power, leading to the killing of thousands of innocent people throughout history. My ballot box is a symbol of not only the power we have as individuals to change the course of history but also the rights that could be taken away from us by these leaders if we take these rights for granted.

Written by Zainab Akram: ‘Where now?” Records my family's journey to Australia from Iraq. The artwork allows viewers to engage with my travels to different areas of the world which has been presented through a series of recognisable symbols including the suitcase, self-portraits, text and maps. The use of red string is

a symbol of my emotional connection to my family and heritage.
Written
by Benjamin Dickson: ‘Progression, Birthing This Hellscape’ explores how the living and urban environments are degrading before our eyes. We are living in an environment that is surrounded by non-biodegradable materials. Plastics and garbage consume our world, clog our rivers and destroy ecosystems. Our homes, towns, and cities are drowning in our trash.

Written by Donna Barber: ‘Inner Hell’ depicts the torment of my personal fears that consume my world every day. It is not something that can be easily expressed through words. I have depicted a series of symbols that highlight some of my fears including spiders, heights and death.

the selective choices people make in selecting fruit deemed void of perfection.

Written by Zoe Gower: My piece ‘The Garden of Earthly Destruction’ is an appropriation of the artwork ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’ by Hieronymus Bosch which includes an illustration of The Garden of Eden and Hell. My painting aims to show the evolution of the Earth as we know it, from its pure beginnings to human overconsumption and damaging pollution; it resembles more of a hellish landscape than The Garden of Eden.

Written by Samantha Barrett: Being surrounded by the world's expectations can feel as though we are trapped in a never-ending cycle of trying to fit in, be good enough and find ourselves. This can create a sense of feeling trapped and can form many mental health issues due to the ever-changing expectations, being “different” and not quite knowing what the “normal” is. ‘Light and Darkness’ shows that despite the surroundings being dark, stressful and having a hold on us, if we look within ourselves, there is always hope and light in the world.
Written by Sophia Stratikopoulos: ‘In Decaying Of Time’, I have embodied the cycle of change from the apple blossom to the apple core. The core is a representation of death. The ants are symbolic as they assist in the process of decay. Presented in a fruit packaging format, this highlights
Written by Nicole Li: ‘White Washed’ represents the world we live in and how we have thrown society away with our actions, especially waste such as plastics. The five panels are placed to reflect the oncoming and current years of our abuse and destruction of our oceans and ecosystems.

Written by Gracie Williams: ‘Bikini Bottom Meets the

60th Anniversary Celebrations
The 60th Anniversary celebrations were an enormous success thanks to the collaborative efforts of the RHHS community. The Creative Arts team facilitated the Face painting stall and the Photo Booth. Thanks to participating students from both the Year 11 Visual Arts and Year 10 Photo classes that helped out during the event.

LIBRARY OF CHANGE
Written by Tjahn Muduliar, Pranit Ali & Samuel Apilado
During Term 3 there were a number of changes to the RHHS Library. We opened the cover of Term 3 and were joined by the new Librarian Mr Proctor. He was amazed to see the wonderful school spirit through all the events including the 60th celebrations. In the beginning chapters of Term 3, we saw new competitions introduced with daily word puzzles and thinking skills, along with jigsaw puzzles to keep our minds at work during break times. Seniors were offered study sessions in the library before and after school with extended opening hours and a new digital presence via a library website. The Homework centre was also popular with junior students looking for extra help after school. Half way through the story of Term 3 we celebrated a low-key Book Week with the English and Science faculties stepping
up with their costumes. Several competitions were held to design book covers and a new library logo (to be revealed soon). This time also saw a lift in the expectations in the library to improve its use for study and reading. This new focus led to students being more respectful and responsible in how they used resources and interacted with each other. It was great to see the impact on all students.
The later chapters saw physicals changes of the library as well with a new room being built and stocktake. All the books in the library were scanned, double checked, rearranged into their correct order, and then taken off their shelves as the construction of a new room started. Most of the books still haven’t made it back on the shelves! We look forward to all the new changes in Term 4 and beyond!
