Today is about your academic progress and success. Today is about your academic effort and assessment. Today is about finishing 2021 and getting your self-brain-ready for 2022.

Today is also about your skills and capabilities, teamwork, respect and kindness, personal commitment, and capacity to work with teachers and each other. Today is about reflecting on your personal effort and also on the way you have worked with others (including your teachers online and F2F) to get here. Today, for a large number of you this has been a very successful year academically and your report comments show you understand what you have done.

Today, for some of you, you know you will need to do more - more attendance in class, more effort, more practice papers, more effective use of your time on assessment tasks and more commitment to submitting assessment tasks on time.

It is confronting to say that if you received a Grade D or E in a subject because you did not do enough work and thought to yourself "I will do better next year" you have much to do.

Today, if you received C grades you can lift your results in 2022 by starting earlier and "getting it done". We know this works and we know that, as you set your goals in each subject for 2022 you have the opportunity to "let yourself off the hook or meet the challenge".

From today you can decide which way to go.

This year has been tough especially with the hard lockdown and all the restrictions but, as the senior leaders told me when they came back to school this term, we also learnt some things about making the most of each moment and focus on what works – • that creating time within timetabled lessons for reflecting on our goals, practice tasks and assessment works, • that having some lessons online works, • that access to video recordings by teachers helps in revision and • that doing it differently because we had to, showed us that we could actually improve the way we learn.

Today is "one moment in time"; tomorrow is another. Your life and journey, your teachers' lives and journeys, your families' journeys and the journey of this school are made up of "moments" - moments where we connect with others, moments that elevate our spirits, moments that make us proud and moments where we have an insight - into ourselves and others.

Today, on the last day of the formal 2021 academic year, I hope you can you think of at least one academic or learning moment (or more) where, even when things were hard, you persisted to be the best person you could be. I hope you will remember that moment.

Finally, in 2022 our school will turn 60 (our Diamond Jubilee) and we will celebrate the many moments of the many students and families who have influenced our school culture. For those of you who will be here I hope it will be a year of great moments that will give you great memories.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE – John Meng School Infrastructure Updates

Rooty Hill High School is currently working closely with the DoE Asset Management Unit to continually improve the condition and utilisation of the school’s assets. We are planning to: • Remove a large number of tripping hazards around the school • Install a shade structure above the school’s basketball courts, providing 1,217m2 of covered outdoor learning space for students and teachers.

• Install additional assistive equipment in the disabled toilet in library.

• Add another permanent ramp to provide immediate access between the 1st Floor of D Block and canteen/quadrangle.

• Redesign the school’s access from North Parade and create a safe drop-off and pick-up area for parents.

We will keep you informed of the progress of those projects in 2022.

Tech-tip of Term 4 Often receiving daily use, your personal laptops or school Chromebooks can be major carriers of germs and viruses, thereby potentially spreading bacteria and disease. A 2018 New York Times article recommended laptop/Chromebook users begin by turning the machine off and removing the battery, if easily done, then cleaning out all of the crevices using Aerosol Air Duster.

The outside can then be wiped down using a microfiber cloth with a few drops of rubbing alcohol added to it.

Note never apply alcohol directly to the computer. The screen can be wiped using a microfiber cloth dampened with a small amount of plain water.

achieved their accreditation at the Proficient Level of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers which is a mandatory requirement for all teachers in NSW. All teaching, administrative and support staff participated in the Term 4 School Development Day Professional Learning event (5 hours) on Restorative Practice. Restorative practice is a whole school teaching and learning approach that encourages behaviour that is supportive and respectful.

12 Teachers and School Administrative and Support Staff undertook 27 hours of professional learning from Tuesday to Friday of Week 9. This professional learning was on Choice Theory Reality Therapy (CTRT), a signature relational platform used by the school in its teaching, learning and wellbeing practices.

Professional development of the 9 Beginning Teachers continued with a focus on preparing for teacher accreditation and mapping the evidence of their practice against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) at the proficient level.

Professional Learning and Leadership Teams (PLLTs) met to evaluate progress on their 2021 School Plan initiatives and activities. The evaluation included evidence of progress and achievement and recommendations for 2022. Individual PLLTs will present their evaluations to the Director of Educational Leadership in early 2022.

YEAR 7

Year Adviser Message – Principal’s Assembly Speech Firstly, I have a few people I would like to thank: Eli and Jeffrey for taking the courage to run today’s assembly, to Nate for his Acknowledgement of Country and Malaika and Chloe, our Senior Leaders thank you for attending your first Principal’s Assembly – we’re looking forward to working with you in 2022. Finally, thank you to Miss Elford, who has worked at my side as assistant Year Adviser for the second half of this year: we are so looking forward to watching your enthusiasm and joy shine as Year 6 into 7 Adviser in 2022.

Year 7, it is such a pleasure to address you today, at your final formal assembly for the year. It has been a strange year, no doubt about it, and for many of us it has been a difficult one, but we have finally made it to the end, together – congratulations!

Year 7, at today’s assembly, I want to talk to you about something really important… Gardening. Why? Well, you see, while we were Learning from Home during Term 3, I became really invested in growing a small vegetable patch in my backyard. Every recess and lunch break I would be in my yard tending to my seedlings. Beyond teaching me about plants, my gardening adventures taught me a little bit about personal growth too and I’d like to share some of those lessons with you now.

1. Your personal growth, much like a garden requires attentive tending.

To grow anything in your garden you must work away at it often. There’s lots to consider: do you have good soil to provide the foundation? Are you pruning weeds and removing pests to allow your plants to grow without hindrance? Are you fertilising and watering your garden to feed your plants and allow them to grow? For us to grow we must tend to ourselves too.

Instead of weeds and pests we must get rid of distractions and things that are getting in the way of us being our best versions of ourselves. Your education is the foundation for your future, the soil, if you will.

Your families, teachers and friends play a huge role in setting that foundation, but so too do you. Make sure you make good use of your time here.

2. It is the rain, not just the sun that helps us grow.

Growth is not linear. That is to say: some days you’re not going to be your best and that is okay. We all fall below the line sometimes, sometimes our emotions get the better of us, and sometimes there are days when we are not as kind as we should be. It’s really easy to think of these days as going backwards, but instead, I want you to think about it like this: some days flowers bloom and we celebrate that because it is a great achievement.

What we don’t see is all the time the flower spent establishing its roots. This growth is less pretty, but just as important. Don’t let your setbacks stop you from blooming.

Finally.

3. The day you plant the seed is not the day you eat the fruit.

Growth requires patience. As you set goals for 2022, I want you to think about not only the things you want to achieve next year, but also, all the hard work you have to put in place in order to achieve that goal. Having a goal is not enough, you must work for your achievements, and you mustn’t feel discouraged when things get tough. Keep plugging away at your goals, encourage others to achieve theirs and ask for help when you need it. Before too long, your harvest will be bountiful.

Year 7, congratulations on a successful first year of high school. As you leave school this afternoon, perhaps for the last time this term, I want to wish you a safe and happy holiday – you all deserve the rest. I can’t wait to see you all in 2022.

Personalised Learning Conversations

Written by Firaba Hussaini In Week 8, Year 7 students completed Personalised Learning Conversations which helped us to think about our future and set goals for ourselves to accomplish. This year, we went to a Personalised Learning Conference with Miss Elford, and we set goals and wrote our Strength or Gratitude comments. We also had interviews where we found out about our grades, attendance and Above and Below the Lines for this semester.

Personalised Learning Conversations are a fun process because it helps us know what we are working towards.

Writing our Strength comments also helps us to reflect on what we have accomplished during the year.

The Return to School

Written by Mali Coombes In Week 4 Year 7 students returned to school following the lockdown. It was a nerve-wracking experience to be back at school after being at home for so long. We didn’t know what it would be like to come back to school, and we didn’t know what it would be like to see our teachers and friends or how our lessons would run.

The first week back it was exciting to see everyone, but it was hard to get back into the rhythm of going to classes. It is great to be back at school after Learning from Home for over a term, it is a lot easier to communicate with our teachers and peers when we are at school!

LOTE

This term in Chinese sports, 3 Year 7 classes had the chance to experience Chinese fan dancing. Students learnt to open and close the fan correctly and were able to use it to dance.

Students enjoyed the process of experiencing a different style of sport.

During Term 4, most Year 7 classes participated in chopstick practice lessons. Students took the opportunity to learn how to hold chopsticks, and how to use them to pick 3

up food. They practice their chopstick skills with cotton balls and learnt about some Chinese table manners.

Year Adviser Message – Principal’s Assembly Speech Firstly, I would like to congratulate all of you on your persistence and resilience this term and making it through an absolute whirlwind of a year. It is mind boggling to think that this time next year, we will be celebrating your last assembly as junior students before you enter the senior school. You have shown maturity, persistence, and resilience upon your return to face-to-face learning, and I would like to commend you all on your attendance, participation and enthusiasm during Term 4.

In Week 8, we spent a few days completing your personalised learning conversations. It was great to see all of you honestly reflecting on the semester and setting yourselves some new goals for Semester 1 of Year 9. The feedback from all of the teachers and support staff working with you was nothing but positive, and a testament to the kind of individuals and year group you are.

A big focus of our goals and strength comments in these conversations was the strength of resilience. Every one of you sitting here has been able to develop your resilience this year. Resilience is the maintenance of positivity and wellbeing in the face of adversity. It is persisting in the face of negative things that come our way and using these negative experiences to help improve our mindset, not break us. The way all of you coped with lockdown and came back to school better, and many of you much taller than before was nothing short of impressive.

Speaking of impressive, I will say some of you worked very hard on your haircuts, or lack of, during lockdown. As you get older and life gets harder, resilience is an invaluable strength to build, and I know you all have the ability to let these experiences make you stronger. I hope that you can all say one of your key strengths is resilience, as you have built upon it this year.

Another big theme of our conversations was setting new goals. I’d like to share a quote from Henry Ford, founder of Ford Motor Company. He said that “if you think you can or you can’t, you’re right”. To me, this speaks volumes. Often, we fail before we even start working towards a goal because we lack the belief in ourselves. If you don’t believe you can achieve something, how do you expect to follow through with it? I’m not saying that belief is all you need. We all know it takes hard work to achieve our goals. But if you don’t start with belief, you’ll go nowhere fast.

We can all be intimidated by the enormity of a goal, often not knowing where to start. This is why it’s so important to think about the challenges and strategies associated with achieving our goals. There is true power in our thoughts, and those thoughts can either empower us to reach our goals or defeat us before we have even started.

Year 8 I encourage you all to have the belief in yourselves that I have in you. You have all shown me what resilient,

YEAR 9

Year Adviser Message - Out of the Blue I love a good idiom, and nothing quite captures the element of surprise like out of the blue. Anyone who has been swooped by a magpie knows the feeling. You look up to what should have been an empty blue sky to find a hostile feathery onslaught.

This semester has been one characterised by events coming from out of the blue. COVID, lockdowns and learning from home wasn’t what anyone expected but we got on with the job anyway.

We learned that we had strengths we didn’t know we had.

Self-motivation and discipline, loyalty to the friends we value most, organisation, and persistence. It wasn’t without its challenges though. It turns out its pretty difficult to stay motivated in a classroom of one, some of us had to juggle our schoolwork with taking care of our siblings and staying connected to friends is a very different experience when you can’t just go to the courts and join in on a conversation.

I know I’m taking a risk here making a statement like this to a group of teenagers, but it turns out school is awesome.

There just isn’t another place where you get to see over a hundred friends on the daily, participate in sports, music, and creative arts, take a break from family and home, and leave with skills and an education all in one. If any of that rang true for you, it was almost certainly a revelation that came out of the blue.

But there is one last thing to come out of the blue and that’s you guys. Next year we put aside the blue uniforms we’ve started our high school journey in and don the white garb of a senior. Pardon the pun, but it very fitting, white is the blank slate that you get to write the start of your senior school story. It’s an opportunity to take what you’ve learned, leave behind the things that have been holding you back and be the student you want to be. It’s a mark of seniority, of respect, my message to you is simple: write yourself a story you’ll be proud of telling.

We Are Successful Seniors

Written by Jassmine Urfano This term we participated in We are Successful Seniors. The programs gave me mixed feelings, on the upside, it’s good to know we have multiple ways to improve our RoSA grades and that the school offers us support to get the result we want. On the other hand, I am feeling a bit overwhelmed knowing the assessments will be more difficult and there is definitely a lot of pressure to be a successful senior. We also got to be involved a women’s chat and I found a lot of the stories from Ms Andrews and Ms Pozoglou really interesting and funny, and it also gave me the feeling that if they can do it, I can do it also.

Written by Brayden Crass, James Collison, Aiden Withers, Ethan Clarke & Kaiser Kauvi This term we participated in We are Successful Seniors. We found the program interesting as we had to apply different to different subjects, in particular the way different subjects are assessed in the senior school. We enjoyed the man chat, Mr Harper had a lot of interesting stories including an interesting story about people in his life who came out, Mr Hewitt had too many stories to remember, but it was clear that no matter what happens growing up we need to be safe and look out for the safety of our mates. We also learned a bit about safe sexual practices. There were also some useful life skills such as writing a resume.

The Return to School – Group Reflection

The return school brought many changes. It was definitely enjoyable and energising to re-connect with friends. We thought it might be a big deal but in many ways, it was like no time had passed at all. Somewhat strangely there wasn’t much to catch up on because we were all in lockdown and not much had happened except for the occasional school assessment. Many of us agreed that we were more productive in lockdown, at schoolwork competes for our attention with our friends and we are all a bit more tired getting to school on time. We hope that we get the same level of one on one feedback that we got via hang out messages and the same individual time to explore the work for ourselves going forward in school.

Personalised Learning Conversations

Written by Trish Ortiz This year personalised learnings conversations were done in groups. While on one hand it was interesting completing it with friends, there was something missing from the individual talks with teachers. This year’s conversations were a bit too broad, whereas the one on one gives us more time to focus on us and our personal achievements and strengths.

My year group also has noticed that our teachers are really encouraging even when we didn’t do very well. I know that when I don’t do my best, it can be nice to hear some encouragement, but I would ultimately prefer honesty. We know when we didn’t very well, and it can feel like not much is expected of us if we are always told we did a good job.

Overall, though, the experience was positive, and we look forward to going back to doing one on one conversations once the COVID restrictions are lifted.

CAPA This term, Year 9 Photographic & Digital Media students participated in a ‘Studio Lighting Portrait Workshop’ with a professional photographer, Liz Savetta. Students learnt various skills and techniques that can have an impact on capturing mood and emotion within their portrait photographs.

YEAR 10

Year Adviser Message It has been such a turbulent year, with so many modifications being made to your learning environment this semester. One of the biggest things which has stood out to me as your year adviser, is how adaptable you have all been in the face of adversity.

To adapt you must learn from your past and any mistakes you might have made. Iron Man is a great example of someone who has shown adaptability. He has learnt from every experience where his suit failed him, and then adapted by improving his suit so he wouldn’t face the same problems. He took it one step further and implemented the same features to Spiderman’s suit so he wouldn’t have to endure the same problems.

When Tony was lost in Afghanistan, he had no way to get back home, so he started installing GPS in his suits so he wouldn’t be lost again. When going higher into the atmosphere, his suit would freeze. He adapted his suit by using a new gold titanium alloy, which has a low freezing point. He installed new, detachable blasters to his suit which would be able to help him take on stronger enemies. He made a nanoparticle suit and added it into his Arc reactor, which allowed him to suit up anywhere, anytime. He implemented an auto dry feature to save his protegee, Spiderman, from freezing after he encountered a similar situation himself.

Each and every one of you has had to adapt in some way this past year, especially during Semester 2, creating your own ‘Tony Stark’ moment. When Online Learning became your reality, you were faced with learning from a completely different environment than you were used to. You had to decide where the best spot in the house was to learn from.

Navigate lessons and assessments through google classroom. Deal with distractions from pets, siblings, TV, gaming, and social media. And you had to learn how to become more independent and remain engaged in your classes. When reflecting on this term, can you think of your biggest ‘Tony Stark’ moment?

I would like to also acknowledge the effort and work ethic displayed by most of you during online learning. It is regrettable that we were not able to have all the amazing opportunities that we normally would have had if we weren’t learning from home, however once we returned to on-site learning, it has been amazing to see how involved some of you are with the opportunities that have become available.

As the year wraps up and your time as Year 10 students comes to an end, I want you to look at where you are and where you are headed next year. The new skills you have developed through learning from home will benefit you as you move into Year 11. You will become stronger as you learn to adapt to your new role as Year 11 seniors.

I am proud of you all and cannot wait to experience Year 11 with you. Thank you.

PASS

Written by Manar Munshid This semester in PASS, I was able to learn and apply many new skills that require dedication and room for improvement. My peers and I practiced our knowledge on the skeletal system during learning from home and applied our knowledge when we completed the quizzes that were based on what we learned. We also did many physical activities during learning from home and also when we returned to school. The experience that I have achieved whilst learning from home really helped me become more focused and responsible. All the experiences that I have had during my time in PASS was worth it and would definitely love to experience everything from the beginning again.

Music Makes A Difference

Written by Manar Munshid This term in MMAD we have learnt to become more expressive with ourselves and who we are. We write poems and what we feel and using those words we create lyrics that we can relate to and apply it into a song. We all work together to create a beat and make our words into a song.

We have worked with Mirah and Rowan and they have guided us to become our best selves and show our uniqueness to the world. I am so thankful to be able to experience this with my peers and teachers and also hope that many more people will get to go through the experience of MMAD - Musicians Making A Difference.

Tell Them from Me Analytics Team

Written by Elijah Jennings This Semester, my team and I were chosen to analyse and present statistics that we were given from Terms One and Two on students well-being at school. We created a presentation, showcasing our ideas and statistics which allowed us to present our strengths and skills as students and as a year group.

During this time, we were able to demonstrate multiple skills and capabilities and used them to our advantage.

These include our collaborative skills such as Teamwork and Leadership capabilities, our literacy skills and ICT skills.

Pulse Lab

Written by Zahra Almoaiel This Semester I was presented with the opportunity to partake in the Pulse Lab, a program where a few senior students and teachers come together to figure out how the school is running and how the school community feels. We do this through conducting surveys, analysing the data, and coming up with suggestions to ensure the school is considerate of the communities wellbeing. During the program we were able to really break down the results and use our own experiences and observations to come to conclusions as to why these results were what they were. We discovered many positives of the school and small areas of improvement, we are currently working on a way to present the information to the rest of the school and ways of improving the school.

Interview to Impress

Written by Dansia Gomes This semester I was able to partake in an online program called ‘Interview to Impress’. This program enabled me and many others to interact with members of the KPMG to give beneficial advice and help students structure their answers and communicate efficiently during future career interviews. This experience was life-changing as it helped me build the confidence and the skills for interviews but also partaking in mock-up trials with the KPMG company.

Despite having this program run online, I found it really enjoyable as it was fun working in breakout rooms with both students and team members that gave us advice and critical feedback that will be useful in future interviews. Overall, this experience was fulfilling as I feel more prepared for job interviews as well as more confident in answering interview questions based on my strengths and previous experiences.

Child Studies

Written by Morgan Rylewski This semester in Child Studies, we were provided the opportunity to learn about the topics of culture in young children and childcare services. We were able to learn many skills in providing the correct services for young children that can help them further develop and grow independently and with others. The class completed an assessment task where we had to create a presentation to teach kindergarten grade students about what culture is.

The assessment task was fun and allowed us to express our creativity and childcare skills as we had to write fitted for 5–6-year-olds so they could understand the content of the presentation. Having to switch to online learning was different and difficult at the start but our teachers were able to help us understand the content a lot more by listening to our feedback and actively seeking feedback, so we were able to optimize our learning. What I enjoyed most about Child Studies was how comfortable and accepting people are of your ideas and contributions.

Visual Arts

Written by Rene Sarraj This semester in Visual Arts we have studied portraiture from numerous Australian artists such as Anh Do and Ben Quilty. Through the analysis of these artists, we have identified the use of artistic elements such as scale, imagery and colour. This has allowed us to recognise certain techniques and methods to utilise within our own artworks.

We were able to see how artists use such elements to improve their artworks whilst also improving our own.

During this semester we also had to begin working on a Special Interest Project, creating our own artwork and documenting our planning and progress along the way.

Term 3 and 4 in Visual Arts was focused on artwork analysis and refining our own skills and techniques inspired by known Australian artists.

YEAR 11

Year Adviser Message – Principal’s Assembly Speech Year 11…or should I say, Year 12. Standing here in front of you all, I can’t help but feel an immense array of emotions. If you had told me a few months ago that we would be here, together, back at school, I probably would have laughed you off the Meet. But here we are, finally, together again, well, almost.

Now at this point of my speech I would normally go through the long list of opportunities and programs you have participated in. I would have raved about receiving our awesome senior jackets with our design that is so on point and so us. I’d then have finished by highlighting all the epic

challenges you took on and overcame at Camp and through the Crossroads program. Now don’t get me wrong, Camp was epic and fun and amazing. There was endless laughter, a lot of swearing, particularly on the Power Fan, and more mud than any of us could have anticipated. It’s only been a few months, but it feels like a lifetime ago that we left our insulated escape and returned to a world on the brink of lockdown.

At the beginning of Term 3 you were optimistic. We’d done this online thing before; we could do it again and we thought we knew what to expect. But as the days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months, the reality set in that we were in this for the long haul. Your patience was tried, waiting for your Google Meets to reconnect or that file that just would not load. Your body clocks and sleep cycles went haywire trying to adjust to the new routines of learning from home.

Pyjamas or not pyjamas became a question for deep consideration. Your organisation, time management and motivation were challenged with everything moving online.

But, for most of you, your resilience, perseverance, persistence, and determination saw you though. You kept turning up, reaching out and being present. You learned how to deal with uncertainty, how to rapidly adapt to change, how to be brave and seek help, and how to let go of the old and embrace the new.

This was epitomised by how you conducted yourselves across your preliminary examination weeks at the end of last term. You were asked to do things that no other cohort has ever been asked to do, and for the most part, you not only survived, but you thrived, showing your teachers what we have always known was there, and surprising yourselves at just how capable you are.

But wait, there’s more… Term 4… our senior leader candidates started us off by stepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park, with their truly inspiring speeches. I’ve said it before, but I want to again congratulate you all, it was one of the closes races we have had in years.

Then came Week 3 and 4 where you not only worked on wrapping your heads around a steady stream of procedures and requirements for transitioning back to school. Yes, your suggestions on the size of our allocated area were appreciated, all be it a touch unrealistic. But at the same time, you also transitioned into Year 12, often considered one of the biggest shifts, as your final year of study at high school begins.

True to form you have taken it all in your stride and made it seem easy. The excited faces, new hairstyles, and positive attitude you all turned up with in Week 4 was intoxicating.

Thank you to those of you who reached out to check on me throughout lockdown and our return to school. The depth of your compassion and concern for me has been truly touching and often kept me going on some of the darkest days.

Strength comes from overcoming things that you thought you couldn’t. You never know how strong you are, until 7

being strong is your only choice. I want you to hold onto and keep that strength, keep that belief, keep that compassion.

You are all amazing humans, and I am forever grateful and privileged to be your year adviser and share this journey with you.

CREATIVE ARTS TERM 4 Art Studio and EMC Photography Club Challenges

Covid restrictions and the inability of year groups to mix has enabled our creative art and photography students to participate in creative challenges online. The following students, Phoenix Ussher Jackson, Jazmine Susi, Angelina Ofisa, Xiu Hui Lim, Donna Barber won prizes for their amazing work.

Congratulations to all students who received recognition awards at assemblies throughout 2021.

Year 11 received: - 2701 Merit awards - 512 Significant Achievement awards.

The PERSIST Award is given each semester to a student who, during the year, has displayed and demonstrated in their expectations, capacity, and achievements, all the PERSIST values.

Skoberon Art Prize

Congratulations to Angelina Ofisa of Year 8 on her artwork being awarded Highly Commended at the 2021 Skoberon Art Prize in Oberon, sponsored by the Oberon Shire Council. Her work is currently on display at the Skoda and Tatra Museum.

A Block Art Gallery

Students from Year 7 to 10 have had their artwork exhibited in the A block gallery. The work completed ranges from charcoal drawings, paintings, ceramics, lino prints and photographs. The artworks featured (on the following page) are by Joy Pham, Firaba Hussaini, Kacea White and Sierra Zappala.
