PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Congratulations to the students and the school for another busy and successful Term 3.

We started in Week 1 with classes and presentation assemblies for Years 7 – 10 and finished in Week 10 with another wonderful graduation. In between students in Year 12 completed all their major projects and HSC performances while being very busy completing applications for early entry to university, scholarships and transition plans.

Best wishes to Year 12 for their HSC examinations next term.

We were excited to host (for the 5th time) the wonderful team from Origin, for the Origin Explorers Day on 2 August. Year 8 students had an opportunity to try the skills and learn about the many careers that the team from Origin (one of the largest companies in the work) can demonstrate. It is very important for schools like ours to continue to work with business and industry partners and to give our student opportunities to explore and plan for the changing world of work.

Our Learning Neighbourhood principals and senior executive staff met to evaluate our programs and plan for the second half of the Year. We invited students from each of the partner schools to join us for “Monet and Milkshakes” as part of Art on the Hill as well as enjoying the company of students from Years 5-8 each Wednesday afternoon for the Gifted Gateway program.

Haka Warriors One of the most important achievements of the year was the Rooty Hill HS team winning the annual PCYC Haka Warriors competition. The many hours spent by staff and students from both organisations, the commitment of families and the respectful and enthusiastic leadership of senior students made this group’s work stand out.

School Wins Major Award On 5 September, Ms Vuki and I were invited to the Town Hall to accept the Public Education Foundation Award for an Outstanding School Achievement. For the third time in a row the school was recognised as “excelling” on the External validation in June and the school’s work was recorded as a series of stories on our new Professional Practice website. New Department of Education Policies and Plans During Term 3, the Department of Education also conducted a wide-ranging consultation on its new Department of Education Plan which will be launched in Term 4. Many changes are proposed and a copy of the new plan will go on our school website in Term 4 when it is released.

The government also made changes to the Behaviour Policy (to start in Term 1 2024) and banned mobile phones in secondary schools from Term 4 2023.

The Department of Education made changes to asset management, staffing and finance policies that will have a big impact on schools like ours in the next 12-18 months.

Senior Student Leaders A very exciting moment in Term 3 was the election of our new Senior Student Leaders for 2024 and their induction on 22 August. I would like to thank the Senior Leader coordinator, Lyndal Howison, for her work with the preparations, voting and organising the election.

Teacher Recognition On 31 August the school was very pleased when the following staff members were recognised in the Metropolitan West and Southwest Director Awards: Tori Middlebrook - Classroom Teacher Angus Shephard - Beginning Teacher Lauren Doidge – Executive Staff Award Catherine Lucas - Executive Staff Award All of these teachers have made a significant difference to programs and learning for students in the school. I want to say a special thanks to Tori for her work with Aboriginal students and education, to Catherine and Lauren for their work leading our literacy and numeracy programs and to Angus for his work with students needing additional support, helping students in Years 10-12 achieve minimum standards and his work with providing evidence for the school’s external validation.

Public Education Foundation Award for School Achievement This prestigious award recognises NSW public schools that have successfully created a sustainable learning environment through a whole-of-school project. Schools receiving this award must demonstrate significant improvement in learning outcomes and opportunities, excellence in student learning, maximising learning opportunities for all students as well as community leadership.

Appreciating the Non-Teaching Staff In Week 8 of Term 3 we had the chance to say thanks and appreciation to our school administrative and school learning support staff. We have a very big team and they are often the first people that parents and students see when they come to the school. Thank you to them all, thank them for their ability to have fun and to work so hard on our behalf.

Can I also add a very special birthday wishes to our SAM, Janice Stuart who had a “big” birthday in Term 3.

Fundraising I would like to congratulate our students for holding a number of fund-raising events to support the Rooty Hill Kindness Project (coordinated by Rooty Hill HS and Rooty Hill PS). We had a Kindness day for the start if Mental Health Month and will hold more events to help the community in Term 4.

Our School Support Officers, Ebony Wicks and Kylie

Wilson worked with a group of students on these projects and in Term 4 will be working with the local Anglicare retirement village on a number of new volunteering projects.

I know we all extend our congratulations and thanks for the closer community relationships we are building.

Anderson, the host of Gruen, regular panellists Todd Sampson, Russel Howcroft and the rest of the Gruen panel.

After a jam-packed two days of script reading, re-writing and studio set up with light and sound engineers, we joined the live audience for the recording of Gruen. The team at CJZ were impressed with Athiei’s ability to engage with the team and provide valuable insight into the production process.

Both Athiei and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of seeing how much work goes into producing TV shows and movies.

FOCUSSING ON THE POSITIVES Melanie Douglas and Conny Mattimore Times are Tough For many of our families this year has been quite hard. The school is always keen to help if we can and we encourage you to ask.

For those that do have a bit extra, could you help us by paying part or all of the $200 course costs. That way we can continue to help with supplying laptops for every student, subsidising excursions and paying for buses for extracurricular programs.

As we finish this term can I extend congratulations to students and staff, thanks to students and staff and a huge thanks to the families and community who continue to give us such great support.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Conny Mattimore During the Semester 1 holidays, Athiei Deng of Year 10 and I were invited to spend two days at CJZ Production Company in Sydney. CJZ is one of Australia’s leading independently owned production companies, producing a range of programs including the ABC’s long running entertainment show Gruen and Bondi Rescue.

Michael Cordell, CJZ’s creative director, co-founder and one of Australia’s most established producers and filmmakers, took Athiei and I through the process of creating documentaries, movies and live TV shows.

During the two days, we worked with the team responsible for Gruen. We attended script reading sessions, re-writing and rehearsals at the ABC Studios. Here we met Will

Commbank Teaching Award Fellows Visit On Thursday 10 August, RHHS welcomed 2022 Australian Schools Plus Commbank Teaching Award Fellows Stephanie Salazar and Trent Cowley who are exploring methods of engagement and achievement in Junior English.

YEAR 7 Year Adviser Message Term 3 has been an excellent one with many students practising one of our PERSIST values, success! Our debaters had their first debate against another school, two artists in the grade won in Art on the Hill, and a selection of students went to the GWS Giants training ground to learn AFL skills from some of the best! Gifted Gateway students have been working hard throughout the year, with a lot of projects underway as well, from writing pieces to fully coded video games. A special shout out to the girls’ volleyball team for taking home gold from NSW Volleyball Schools Cup, and our three Haka Warrior students, who’s dedication and passion assisted the team in winning first place at the final competition run by PCYC Blacktown. It’s been a pleasure to cheer you all on from the sidelines, well done Year 7 on a great term of hard work and persistence.

Debating Written by Mariam Abdelmaksoud We had a lot of fun debating this term. We debated against a school from Blacktown, who were very good and we unfortunately were beaten by them this time, but we’ll try our best to practise our skills and hopefully get better. Each one of us spoke about the topic of having a four-day school week, and we argued this was good so we had one day break to study or spend more time with family. Mr Hewitt has helped us learn how to structure our sentences, and how to speak confidently.

Haka Warrior Written by David Arona In the Haka Warrior program ran by PCYC Blacktown, we learnt about our culture in the performances we did and also showing our passion to the world. It was a long journey but we made it. So, after we finished, we walked up the tunnel back on our way, waiting for the announcement to see who made the finals. When I heard the announcement, I seen everyone go into tears of joy as they got ready for the Haka face off. After we finished the face off, we left the stage cheering and waiting for the winners to be announced.

Once we heard our name called, we ran onto the stage to collect the trophy. Knowing that those past 20 weeks paid off as when we got on the stage everyone was cheering and making us feel confident. It was a memorable experience that we were glad to be a part of.

Girls Volleyball Schools Cup Written by Aaliyah Acosta The 2-day Volleyball Schools Cup would probably be one of my favourite experiences of my life. We got to play many games, met some amazing teams and improved on our skills. We played at the Netball Center in Sydney Olympic Park and got to hang out with the other teams. After 2 long days of volleyball, we took home another gold medal to our collection. We had so much fun and I can’t wait to compete again. A big thankyou to our coach, Mr Treharne for all of his guidance and support.

Boys Volleyball Schools Cup Written by Jacy De Leon The 2-day volleyball tournament with the Year 7 boys was a blast. The train trip to netball central, the arena in which we played, was so much fun including joys of laughter.

While playing we tried our absolute hardest. We were led by our coach Brayden and the two best assistant coaches Miss Elford and Miss Douglas throughout the 2-day competition. As Year 7’s this was our first year playing as a team we did the best we could and we will surely soar past our limits next time.

A Day Like A Giant Written by Mataiah Mitchell Meafou Day in the life of giant was fun and memorable, we had been doing a lot of practise for AFL, and learning more about the sport, we experienced kicking and training with the members of the GIANTS. A big thank you to Ms Corpuz for taking us.

Hoyts Excursion Written by Elaina Bramley The Hoyts excursion was so much fun. We watched Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and had popcorn and an ice cream choc top which was all optional. We got to choose who we sat with and where we sat. I had so much fun watching the movie with my friends and at the end we clapped because of how good the movie was. It was an amazing experience and first outside of school excursion.

I’m super happy that I went. I hope we can do something like it again.

YEAR 8 Year Adviser Message Term 3 was an exciting academic term for Year 8 with many students taking the time to focus on their classwork, assessment tasks and choose what subjects they want to study in Year 9. During Term 3 students were involved in: • Explorers Day • Elective Selection • Tell Them From Me Analyst Teams • Haka Warriors Congratulations to all students who achieved success in Term 3, whether it was in Haka Warrior, a sports team, participation in programs or in their classroom assessments.

We are looking forward to a fun filled final term of junior school.

Mr Crosilla Year 8 Adviser

Origin Career Explorers Day Year 8 students participated in the Origin Career Explorers Day. This is the 5th time the program has run in the school and the 2023 was one of the best. We had 15 volunteers from Origin Energy and Origin Foundation, some flying in from Brisbane and Melbourne to be a part of the day, to work with Year 8 in 4 different workshops of their choice. Students spent the day exploring the transferable skills needed to be successful in a career, learning about the pathways of the Origin employees and spent lots of time completing handson activities that helped them explore future pathways.

Students had the opportunity to practice their leadership, collaboration, resilience and future career skills.

LOTE Written by Usu Ohi During Week 9 of Term 3, I got to participate in Mr Luo’s Tai Chi 太极 lesson. Mr Luo talked about the things that can stress us out and taught us how we can chillax by doing Tai Chi movements. As a class, we went to the small COLA, and Mr Luo was teaching us some Tai Chi movements and forms that help us to calm and relax. He even did some amazing Tai Chi moves and even showed us that he could do the splits! It was super cool!

Elective Assembly Year 8 students learnt about the elective choices for Years 9 and 10. Students selected their top 2 choices to study over the next 2 years.

The elective assembly was held after the Career Explorers Day, students had been encouraged to select subjects that align with their interests, passions, and strengths. During Term 4 students will be able to find which 2 subjects they will be studying in 2024 and 2025.

Tell Them From Me Analyst Teams A team of 5 Year 8 students came together to analyse the Tell The From Me Survey data to give teachers an insight into the year group. A number of recommendations have come out of the survey that will be in place during Term 4 and as students begin Year 9.

YEAR 9 Year Adviser Message Term 3 was a quieter term for Year 9 with many students taking up the opportunities offered to them. However, students were busy with assessment tasks, class work and training for various sports. During Term 3, students were involved in: • Haka Warriors Program • GOALS Program • Y-Elective Excursions • Job Readiness Workshop • Sport Gala Days Although Term 3 was quieter for extracurricular activities, Year 9 students were highly involved and consistently showed all the PERSIST values. Miss Short Year 9 Adviser

Book Week Author Visit On Thursday 10 August, RHHS welcomed Will Kostakis, an awardwinning young adult author, to speak with Year 9 students about his books, his writing process and hilarious stories about his life. Will's books are available to loan from the library, but after his speech, most are already on loan! We can't wait to have him back again.

Job Readiness Program 40 students participated in the job readiness program run by EY. Students learnt skills such as communication, conflict resolution and how to be best prepared when applying and interviewing for a job.

The day was filled with several hands-on activities with 2 students post program being successful in applying for a summer job.

Western Sydney University Fast Forward Program Throughout the year, 20 students from Year 9 participated in the Western Sydney University Fast Forward Program.

Throughout the year, these students have participated in InSchool Workshops designed to enhance social and academic skills and assist them in reaching their full potential.

YEAR 10 Year Adviser Message Year 10 have continued to exhibit the school values of PERSIST during the third term of senior school. I am very proud of what we have achieved as a year group so far and am very excited to continue seeing Year 10 grow in their last term of 2023.

GOALS Program Students who participated in the GOALS program attended their graduation ceremony at the Ashurst law firm in the City. Students enjoyed a trip to Sydney Tower along with a VR roller coaster experience. Students were able to spend one last session with their mentors to wrap up the program and enjoyed a formal lunch.

Miss Pozoglou Year 10 Adviser

Subject Selections Year 10 have now successfully submitted their subject selections for 2023. We hope that with the guidance of parents and teachers, Year 10 will be successful in pursuing their passions as they enter Year 11 in 2024.

Deputy Principal’s Assembly Year 10 were recognised for their achievements during Term 3 in the Deputy Principal’s assembly on Monday of Week 10. Year 10 have once again showed what a high achieving year group they are with some excellent achievements. A big congratulations to all students who received merit awards, significant achievement awards and PERSIST awards this term.

ABCN Programs Many Year 10 students were selected for participation in programs run by ABCN for leadership. Students participated in excursions to the city throughout the term.

The students worked extremely well, displaying the PERSIST values each time. I am very proud of Year 10’s willingness and enthusiasm to participate in programs with our partner agencies.

Haka Warrior Several students from Year 10 were selected to participate in the Haka Warrior program. Many lunch time and after school training sessions were put in by these students and we are very proud of their hard work and dedication to the program. The students represented the school at the competition on Friday 1 September, where they won overall winners, best singing performance, and best Cook Island performance. A massive congratulations to all students involved.

Sport Year 10 students were actively involved in many sporting teams during Term 3, including Sydney West knockout basketball, touch football, soccer and netball. We also had many students participate in the NSW Volleyball Schools Cup, Panther Trophy competition for Rugby League, Oz Tag gala day and Basketball NSW gala day. Congratulations to all students who have represented Rooty Hill this term.

I am looking forward to seeing how they will navigate Year 12 and their HSC; I am sure I will be impressed once again by their efforts.

Mr Hewitt Year 11 Adviser

Member of the UBS Finance Academy – Zena Jalil Year 11 student, Zena Jalil has been selected as the representative of Rooty Hill High School at the UBS Finance Academy. UBS is a global investment bank with headquarters in Switzerland.

Zena will be one of a select group of students invited by UBS to attend a threeday course at their offices in Sydney.

Academy attendees will be given the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into financial markets, the operations of a bank and the career paths available in this sector.

Congratulations and best wishes to Zena, we hope this opportunity provides useful work experience.

2023 HIA-Stratco NSW Apprentice Awards Congratulations to Zacheri Molloy who was recognised as a finalist for the 1st Year Apprentice Award, Bricklaying Achievement Award at the HIA-Stratco NSW Apprentice Awards.

YEAR 11 Year Adviser Message After the most challenging 3 terms of high school faced by Year 11 to date, I am proud to write that the future class of 2024 has completed Year 11 and is on the way to the last year of their HSC journey.

The year has been full of events which Year 11 has played an important role in. Our first nations students set the stage for a Harmony Day and flag ceremony that symbolised the spirit of community enjoyed here at Rooty Hill.

A contingent of Pasifika Island students were part of the Haka Warriors competition, cooperating with their peers from other year groups and ultimately winning the competition. We also had representative success in sports including athletics and volleyball.

The year group completed a crossroads program, some at school and some at a year group camp at Kincumber. Fears were faced, challenges overcome and friendships strengthened as students climbed, abseiled, jumped, and ran through muddy obstacle courses.

Year 11 concluded with the longest, most academically rigorous set of exams they have every faced: The preliminaries.

Although nerves were tested, many nights ran late studying and emotions ran high... the year group persevered.

Year 11 are no strangers to adversity and always ensure that they show up and give it their honest best.

Incoming Senior Leadership Team 2024 After a rigorous selection process, we are delighted to announce that the Senior Leadership team for 2024 has been selected. This year's application process included a written application for students to explain their past contribution to our school community, as well as an interview with the Year Advisor and Deputy Principal, and the Principal herself.

Finally, the students had the opportunity to write and deliver a speech to both fellow applicants and for some students, all of the students in Years 10 and 11, as well as members of the Student Representative Council (SRC). All students progressed through this process with courage, while demonstrating their diverse leadership qualities as well as their commitment to our PERSIST values.

These values were clearly on show at the Induction Assembly on 22 August, which featured an inspiring speech from past Rooty Hill student and university award winner

Lara Ferri, as well as insightful words from both in the incoming and outcoming school captains. Congratulations to the Senior Leaders of 2024.

YEAR 12 Year Adviser Message Athletics Carnival Year 12’s final term was jam packed with events. We had The Colour Run, Throwback Thursday, Pyjama Day, Games Days, HSC Open Night, Haka Warrior Champions and of course Graduation. Being their final term of high school, Year 12 wanted to enjoy their time with their friends at a place most of them had attended every day for 6 years…and they made the most of it.

Ms Haigh Year 12 Adviser

HSC Open Night HSC Open Night is a favourite at Rooty Hill High School and Year 12 of 2023 did not disappoint. Construction, Design and Technology, Music, Art, Drama and English Extension students were on show with performances, major works and an incredible atmosphere. It was a night to remember. Staff, parents and students enjoyed beautiful musical performances, amazing and hilarious drama performances, and were able to walk through a gallery of art works and major work projects of a professional standard. It was a night to be proud of all their hard work and acknowledge their talent.

Colour Run The Colour Run was a highlight of the term. As a year group, Year 12 spend an afternoon together, running, and covering each other in the brightest colours. Students spent time with their friends, laughed, took many photos, and went

home covered in colour. It was a fun way to spend some time together as a year group before students graduate.

Throwback Thursday and Pyjama Day In the final weeks of the term, Year 12 took part in some dress up days.

Throwback Thursday asked students to wear their junior uniform, throwing back to their younger days at Rooty Hill High School.

Some students you would never know were not still in Year 8, others clearly had changed, some having well and truly grown out of their tiny shirts. Students also voted and begged for a Pyjama Day and it was a hit! There were some students who had obviously literally rolled out of bed, while others were extremely stylish in their PJs. We spent the breaks playing Bullrush and Dodgeball, reminiscing and laughing about our time together over the years.

Haka Warriors Our Haka Warrior team came first at the championship this term. The team was led by Year 12 students and contained a mix of students from all grades. The team practiced for 20 weeks leading up to the competition and worked with leaders Blacktown PCYC to create their own performance.

The two Year 12 students that led the group were Hohepa Witehira and Meily Roberts. The Haka Warrior students are highly respected within the Rooty Hill High School community and have worked hard to achieve this great feat.

Well done to the Haka Warrior team of 2023!

Graduation Day

Graduation was a day to celebrate. Year 12 completed major works, assessment tasks, and 6 years of high school.

Students arrived in their gowns, fresh haircuts, and best school shirts to walk across the stage of the hall for one last time. It was a beautiful day with tears, laughter, hugs, and congratulations. The hall was packed with parents, carers, teachers, siblings and Year 12. The ceremony was emotional and moving, students from music and drama classes performed, and the captains gave their farewell speech.

Once the ceremony was over, we all went out into the quadrangle to celebrate with family and friends.

Art on the Hill – Milkshakes & Monet

Modern History – Classroom Visit Written by Bianca Dodd, Year 12 Student On Monday 28 August 2023, our Modern History class was given the opportunity to hear from Mr Pillay who lived in South Africa prior to and post the Apartheid System. As he spoke, we were able to learn about the conditions of education that South African children had to endure and its significance in South Africa. By listening to his past experiences, he brought to light how ungrateful many of us Australians have been, especially in terms of our education system and the opportunities we have been given. Mr Pillay highlights the fact that in South Africa, he was forced to teach children during the night as to not be caught by enforcers of the Apartheid System, and that for children who were entitled to an education under the system, schools were so crowded that he mentioned ‘children would wait outside of schools for others to die so they could rush in and take their place’. Within South Africa, everyone understood the importance of education and pursued these opportunities in spite of the risks. This really put into perspective the value of our education at Rooty Hill High School and how we should be grateful for our teachers and all other supporting staff in the school.

Overall, the class and I have immensely appreciated being able to connect with the community through Mr Pillay as it opens up our world view by showcasing the hardships faced by others, making us value and respect our fortunate livelihoods in Australia.

This Year, Our Learning Neighbourhood Art on the Hill exhibition held a workshop at Rooty Hill High school for all the award winners from all four primary schools. The four schools are: Rooty Hill Public School, Eastern Creek Public School, Minchinbury Public School and Mt Druitt Public School. Students from Kindergarten to Year 6 participated in art making activities led by Visual Arts teachers from Rooty Hill High school. They were also given milkshakes to enjoy while making their artwork as well as a light snack.

Rooty Hill High Visual Arts students helped and supported the primary school students throughout the day. A huge thankyou to the Visual Arts staff Ms Gatt, Ms Zeibots, Ms Reyes, Ms Scerri and also Mr Diaz for creating a video of all the award winners for all the schools participating.

SRC National Day of Action Against Bullying & Violence Written by Raina Kongkon The day started off with a Do Now in Period 1. It was a beautiful presentation about kindness made by the SRC for the whole school. Classes were also given little paper strips that they used to write things about kindness on. The teachers decided and agreed that today was allowed to be mufti and the school could wear whatever they wanted. Two members of the SRC team (Raina Kongkon & Mariam Abdelmaksoud) worked together to create a photo backdrop on one of the canteen's chalkboards. Later, the paper strips created in Period 1 were collected, turned into chains, and hung up all over the school.

Hamilton who has been instrumental in creating some exciting displays to encourage students into the library and reading new books.

Author Visit Year 9 were treated to the humorous author Will Kostakis, who came to speak for the morning in the lead up to Book Week. The library still has students looking to borrow his funny and dramatic at times novels.

Science Week The library helped celebrate Science Week by focussing on Innovations in Australian Science. Students played with and read about advancements from Australian scientists through a curated display that included: • Polymer bank notes • Cochlear implants • Aboriginal uses for native plants • Black Box flight recorders

Individual Student Achievement Book Week This was a week to celebrate reading, books, authors, and of course our favourite characters. We had a dress up day to celebrate inspirational book characters to fit with the Book Week theme of “Read, Grow, Inspire”. Staff and students got involved and had fun showing off their creativity. This was also shown in our collective story writing project, where students were given a random prompt and started to write and draw the events of a story together on a giant piece of paper.

We also had the pleasure of visiting author Zoe Krabbe who read some of her poems and answered questions from the audience. It was great to see their participation and interest in the process of writing poetry. Students started Book Week by coming up with titles for books that Artificial Intelligence had created a book cover for. All the titles were funny and showed that AI hasn’t fully taken over yet.

Congratulations to Samuel Perkins who won the Under 19’s NSW All Schools Championships. This is his sixth consecutive title and he is the only athlete over the 86 years of the championships to achieve this unique feat in 2023. We wish Samuel well in the future with competing in future Commonwealth and Olympic Games.

Open Girls Volleyball CHS Champions The Rooty Hill High School Opens Girls Volleyball team has demonstrated an extraordinary feat in becoming the Combined High Schools State Volleyball Champions. They defeated Doonside High School in the Grand Final. Most Valuable Player was awarded to Bianca Dodd.

SPORT Term 3 Volleyball Schools Cup Rooty Hill High School continues its high level of success in volleyball.
