2023 Achievements

PRINCIPAL’S EXCELLENCE ASSEMBLY ADDRESS

Friday 9 February 2024

Welcome to the Rooty Hill High School Annual Excellence Assembly, celebrating the achievements of the students, the school and the community in 2023. Welcome to students, ex-students, families, community guests and a special welcome to Year 7.

Today, just over 150 students, 5 staff and 8 community members will be recognised for outstanding achievements in 2023. I want to acknowledge the support of our community and, particularly thank our Elders for their ongoing support of the school.

As principal I want to highlight some of our major achievements and the stories of 2023:

• The school received the Public Education Foundation, Secretary’s Award for Outstanding School Achievement for Professional Next Practice, demonstrating that what the adults and students do together matters, and when the adults change their practice, the whole school shifts. We proudly launched the Professional Practice website to share our professional work and practice with educators across the world and our work was recognised in requests to participate in case studies, new programs and to host national and international visits with principals and academics from New Zealand and Japan.

• There is evidence of excellence in the school plan where we completed and embedded 17 three-year projects that made a difference (see situational analysis for 2024-2027 plan and 2023 Annual Report) across three strategic directions (SD1, 2 and 3).

• Rigorous reading and writing (SD1)

• New approaches to numeracy (SD1)

• New curriculum implementation – with teaching teams

• Assessment, marking and feedback (SD1)

• HSC pathways and HSC strategy (SD1)

• Capabilities (SD1)

• Inclusive Practice (SD1)

• Restorative Teacher Practice (SD1)

• Improved Attendance (SD2)

• Relational pedagogies and the 4Rs (SD1, SD2, executive and wellbeing teams)

• Educational Pathways program and learning transfer (SD2)

• Academic subject goals and student self-reporting (SD2)

• Learner profiles (SD2)

• External evidence sets (SD3)

• Aboriginal Education and cultural awareness (SD3)

• Next practice leadership for improved practice – when the adults change (SD3)

• External validation (SD3)

• There is evidence through the School Operations Plan that we met milestones in each of the 11 operational and management areas of the school. This included significant asset renewal, including a new Science laboratory and Art Studio, improved practice in wellbeing and personalised learning, new

1

assessment polices, revised Professional Development Plans and Practices, and professional practice and new equity initiatives.

• In the Department of Education External Validation, the school demonstrated 13 of the 14 elements at excelling and received outstanding feedback from the Director of Educational Leadership and panel. This was the third external validation where the school was rated among the best run and most effective government schools in the state.

• Students made significant progress (growth) and performance (attainment) on internal and external measures including in the HSC results and the school met its HSC targets for the number of students in the top 3 bands of the HSC. We also met attendance targets and made progress on all other measures.

• I want to note the many successful staff and student teams including the Open Girls Volleyball Team and the Haka Warriors team, both of whom won major competitions.

• Four of the staff were nominated for the Executive Director’s Awards – Lauren Doidge, Catherine Lucas,AngusShephardandTori Middlebrook.Tori Middlebrook was recognised at the Awards presentation for her excellence as a classroom teacher and young leader in Aboriginal Education.

• Our studentsandstaff continuedto partner with The Origin Foundation, “Learning Creates”, “Real Schools”, “PERU”, universities, and other partners delivering bespoke learning and transition programs. I would like to acknowledge and thank Professor Smita Shah OAM for her long-standing support of the school. She and her husband have donated fundstotheschoolto sponsor the awardfor the Team of the Year for the next 5 years.

As I said last year, we retain a strong focus on our values, culture, platforms and change projects in the face of considerable external challenge, new policies and initiatives.

In 2023, we chose the value of Respect and Responsibility as the core value of the year and we added Restoration and Resilience. We called these 4 underpinning frameworks the 4Rs, and we said we would demonstrate them in our language, behaviour, mindsets, and culture that we are respectful, responsible, restorative, and resilient. We said we would continue to make good choices, avoid blaming others and always seek opportunity to find new and innovative ways to ensure the best for each and for all our students.

We used data based on student behaviour and feedback to introduce the RIOT (Resilience in our Teens) program and continued to work towards best practice in student agency. We are proud of our student culture and the ways our students work with us to set goals and achieve them. We are proud we rebuilt our culture and commitment to giving every student the opportunity to do his or her best.

For 2024, we will be taking our next step as a schoolcommunity. We will introduce a new school plan and design a range of new projects to improve and innovate our practice.

We will continue to focus on new curriculum, capabilities and dispositions, student learning journeys through new ways of reporting, and new pathways programs, improving classroom practice, digital literacy and learning with artificial intelligence (AI).

We will also have a new core value for 2024 – Teamwork and Leadership. Based on evidence from the last 3 years we know that our most successful work and learning is done when we work together.

A successful team:

• Has a common purpose

• Shares the same values

• Speaks the same language

• Follows the same rituals

• Supports each member of the team schoolincluding outliers

• Has set norms, rules and practices

• Has common behaviours

• Puts the team first

Our students and the ongoing culture of working together as part of #TeamRootyHill is one of the greatest strengths of our school and school-community and I want to welcome Year 7 to our team.

In 2024, we will continue to use the “teams” strategy that has been so effective in establishing this school’s leaders and leadership at all levels in the past.

The award winners here today represent so much more than their individual achievements – they represent the future of this community, and they speak for the best that public secondary education can provide when we all work together.

Congratulations to all our award winners, their teachers and families.

Deborah Cunningham In 2023, this award recognises the importance of specialist teaching roles.

Deborah has been the school’s Careers Adviser since 2017, after working in a range of teaching roles since 1996. Her role is highly specialised and fundamental to the achievement of our school’s purposes.

As her role has become more complex, Deborah has used herexpertisetoinitiateandimplementarangeofPathways programs that have ensured the school’s purpose to give every student the opportunity to do his or her best. Deborah has recognised that, in a highly successful comprehensive high school, students and their families want and need a range of careers programs that address their skills, aspirations and life goals.

As a result, Deborah has worked closely with the school’s senior executive, executive staff and teachers to identify targeted and personalised pathways. In 2023, she coordinated a range of targeted programs with TAFE, privateproviders, universities, employerorganisationsand the Educational Pathways Program.

David Proctor

In 2023, this award recognises the importance of specialist teaching roles. David Proctor was appointed to Rooty Hill High School as school librarian in July 2022, after a highly successful career as a geography and humanities teacher with a powerful voice in the Geography Teachers Association.

In his relatively short time as librarian, David has used his expertise to lead for learning, to work with colleagues and to create a range of new and innovative programs for students and staff.

In designing innovative programs for students, David took the concept for a program to link gifted and potentially gifted students in Years 5 – 8. Working with the Learning

Neighbourhood schools, he designed and delivered the highly successful Gifted Gateway program for 2023. His expertiseinworkingwithcolleagues, hisattentiontodetail and his genuine interest in learning every student, ensured that the program engaged the students and their families while, at the same time creating powerful learning moments.

In giving David this award, the school would particularly want to recognise his contributions to staff professional learning and the design and delivery of the school’s IDEALwritingplatform.Davidhasworkedcloselytolead colleagues in learning about the deconstruction of questions and the application of sophisticated strategies that help students improve the quality of their writing and achieve higher grades.

STUDENT INDIVIDUAL & TEAM ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

School Council Student of the Year – Zahra Almoaiel

Dux of the School Address

Good Morning Miss Cawsey, members of the official party, teachers, guests, students and Year 12 2023.

I would like to thank the audience of supporters who have come today to recognise this schools, and its students’, many achievements of 2023. I’d like to thank my family for always believing in me and encouraging me to do my best. I’d also like to thank the school, and more specifically, Miss Cawsey, for her continued efforts to improve the lives of RHHS students.

And finally, I’d like to share my most important thanks to the teachers who have guided me, Miss Kennerson, Miss Poon, Miss Bartlett and Miss Munzie, and a special thank you to Miss Tapuska. Without all of them I would not be up here today.

Throughout my journey at RHHS, I have come tolearnthe trueimportance ofschool. And thoughI am heretoreceive an academic award, the true prize has been the life skills I have developed during my time here. As we all know, we come to school to learn, to work hard and to hopefully achieve good grades.

But I think many of us, I included, have failed to recognise until now the true importance of school in that it prepares us to succeed and persevere through the challenges of adulthood.

Teachers often tell us “quality over quantity”, but I don’t think many of us realise what that really means. During Year 12, I balanced two part-time jobs, representative volleyball out of school and competitive volleyball in school. I also had a decent social life, prioritised family and treasured my personal time. So, in order to find the time to excel in my studies I had to prioritise the quality of how I studied over the quantity of hours spent studying.

Although I am overwhelmingly proud to have achieved this award today, I do feel that I missed out on making lifelong memories, challenging myself in stepping out of my comfort zone and finding out who I am as an individual.

Something that I’d like all of you future RHHS graduates to remember is that you should seize every opportunity available to you. So, my final words today are that yes, even though it is important to study hard and receive an education, the main objective of high school does not have to be achieving the best grades possible.

Because while academic success is admirable, what holds a greater value is using this time to prepare ourselves to succeed in our futures and become individuals we are proud to be.

Congratulations to all the award winners today. Thank you.

Good afternoon, Ms Cawsey, Ms Vuki, Mrs Andrews, Miss Elford, teachers, parents, fellow students, and respected guests. It is my absolute honour to be standing here today as the Year 7 DUX of 2023.

I want to start by saying before I even started high school, I knew that I wanted to be DUX. I knew that I wanted to be giving this speech on this podium at this very moment. I promised

myself I was going to be here and somehow; I was going to make that happen. And now look at me, here I am.

Of course, I couldn’t do this all by myself. I would like to thank Ms Cawsey for giving me this opportunity, my teachers for guiding and teaching me, my class (7A) for being a kind and fun class to be in all year, my friends and yearadviser Miss Elfordforalwaysbeingthereforme,my parents for all their unconditional love, support, and care from the moment I was born to now, and lastly but most importantly, God. I am truly grateful for His guidance and for all of these incredible people and without them, I wouldn’t be standing here.

2023 has probably been a strange year for all of us. As we entered the gates of high school as Year 7 students we adjusted to the unfamiliar environment of high school. I know there were times this year when we made mistakes and messed up, and sometimes we wished we could go backandchangethem.Butyoushouldn’tletyourmistakes hold you back, instead, use them to grow, learn and improve. I would like to congratulate each and every student who has successfully completed their first year of high school. It is a great milestone that we’ve achieved together, and we should all be extremely proud of our achievements.

My mum once told me that if you’re going to do something, do it right & and do it well. Do it with care and with hard work. I want to make my parents proud. I want to make myself proud. I want to have a good future and be successful. I want to have a good life and go big places. I’m sure we all do. “You only live once,” everyone says. It’s true. We all have our whole lives ahead of us so we shouldspendthetimewehavenowtoprepareforitwisely.

To my wonderful year group, continue reaching for your goals. I promise you one day, if we work hard, we’ll reach them.

God Bless you all.

Have a safe and lovely holiday. Thank you.

Your commitment to our growth extends far beyond the classroom, instilling in us the values that will shape our futures. Your belief in our potential has been the foundation upon which our successes are built.

We’d also like to extend our sincere gratitude to our parents, family and friends for always being supportive and providing us with the understanding and patience whenever we faced obstacles.

We are deeply grateful for this recognition and commit to continue striving for excellence. Receiving this award is a privilege, marking not just academic success but a commitment to learning and perseverance. We are truly honoured to receive the DUX award for Year 8.

Year 8, we congratulate you all for completing another year of high school. Together we have completed another year as juniors. We highly encourage you all to enter 2024 with a goal of performing to your personal best, constantly striving for improvement and being optimistic. We hope that next year willalso be filled with accomplishmentsand growth for all of you as we reach our third year of high school.

Congratulations for the wonderful collective efforts you’ve put in 2023 and thank you once again for this incredible honour. Let us continue to support and inspire each other as we begin the next phase of our educational journey. Thank you.

Year 9 – Ashmeet Parmar

Good Morning, Ms Cawsey AM, Ms Vuki, Mrs Andrews, Ms Short, students, teachers, parents and distinguished guests. It is with the greatest honour that I am standing here today, selected for the Year 9 DUX title of 2023.

As we reflect om our journey through Year 9, we can’t help but acknowledge the many experiencesthat haveshaped usintotheindividuals weare today. From selecting our new electives to facing the end of our junior years without last-ever NAPLAN, we have encountered moments big and small that have collectively moulded, fostering growth and resilience.

Our journey this year was filled with new challenges and opportunities, including exploring different electives and programs, making the most of unique incursions and excursions, and, most importantly, marking the closure of our junior years.

As we move forward, let us carry with us the lessons we have learned and the memories we have made. Let us continue to embrace new challenges and opportunities with the same enthusiasm and determination that has brought us this far. Congratulations to all of us for making it through Year 9, and here’s to the next chapter of our academic adventure.

Iwould liketo nowtakethis opportunity tothank all ofmy teachers, peers, friends, family and most importantly my mum and dad who have supported me and encourages me to strive for excellence throughout my junior years. Your

7

guidance, patience, and dedication have not gone unnoticed.

To myfellow peers, thisjourneytogether has beennothing but short of amazing. We’ve laughed, we’ve faced challenges, and we’ve grown side by side. Today, I stand here with pride, recognising the accomplishments of each and every one of us as we reach this significant milestone. The bonds we’ve forged and the moments we’ve shared have truly shaped our grade’s collective experience.

To wrapthis up I would like to say that Iam truly humbled to be selected for the prestigious award, and I would like to urge everyone to work hard and strive for greatness because your hard work always pays off. Thank you all for your attention and have a wonderful day.

Year 10 – Rebecca Gao

Good Afternoon teachers, parents and fellow peers. It’s with immense honour and privilege to be titled as this year’s Year 10 DUX. I’d like to congratulate the other award winners and cohort for their excellent results from such a successful year. Senior school has been quite intimidating considering it’s a big leap from junior school as we continue to prepare and pursue our future goals. However, we, together with the help of our teachers, were able to overcome these challenges.

I’d like to thank all the teachers and staff members who have gone above and beyond in teaching us, providing us with unshakeable support and opportunities, creating a safe and educational environment. And because of your dedication and hard work, we’ve been able to excel, get closer to achieving our goals and becoming the people we are today.

On that note, I’d like to take a moment to express my gratitude and appreciation to my parents, family and friends who’ve endlessly supported me through the year. I’m grateful for your patience, unwaveringencouragement and presence in my journey that I'll forever cherish.

This year has been quite daunting especially as we complete our RoSA assessments, subject selection and journey after Year 10 which are great responsibilities. Year 10 contained hundreds of decisions that will undoubtedly change our education, career and essentially our course of life.

This year has taught meaningful life lessons as with these uncertainties, mistakes happen, they're bound to happen and the importance of self-discipline. It’s an opportunity for personal growth through valuable lessons that exposes our strengths and weaknesses, teaching us multiple life skills such as confidence and resilience.

I hope everyone continues to make high school one of the golden years in their lives and continue to create joyful memories.

Once again, congratulations to everyone on our collective success and achievements. I wish the best of luck to everyone on their future endeavours. Thank you, have a safe and happy holiday.

Year 11 – Muhammad Abdullah Baig

Respected teachers, dear parents, and my fellow Year 11 students, good morning. It is an honour and privilege for me to stand here today and address you as the 2023 Year 11 DUX.

For those who don't already know me, my name is Muhammad Abdullah Baig and I am originally from Pakistan. I moved to Australia and joined RHHS at the start of thisyear. When I first arrivedat this school, Inever thought I would fit in but since that day, a lot has changed. I was welcomed with open arms and met with unrelenting kindness wherever Iwent. Ihavemademanyfriends along the way, friends that I hope see the same amount of unwavering support in me that I see in them. And even though my time at RHHS so far has been brief, I feel like the friendships I have made will endure for years to come.

At the start of this year, I did not have in mind that I would go on to be the Year 11 DUX, in fact, I had no idea what dux was. You could say that I achieved this by accident but the truth is, it is because I value hard work and doing my best in everything I do. A big part of my success goes to the wonderful people who have accompanied me and motivated me throughout the year.

I would like to thank the wonderful teachers whose help and support extended beyond the classroom. They sacrificed their comforts and routines to give us extra support when we needed it. From after-school study sessions to responding to our emails and even holiday study in some cases. I owe a lot of my success to them and I would like to thank them for their dedication and commitment to their students.

To the school leadership team, thank you for making Rooty Hill a placethat encourages success andsupportsits student’s aspirations.

And of course, none of this would have been possible without the unwavering support of my parents. Their love, encouragement, and a desire to make them proud are what have driven me to work to the best of my abilities. I cannot thank them enough for all the sacrifices they have made and the opportunities they have given me.

Tomyfriendsandpeers,Iwouldliketoacknowledgewhat a privilege it is to have such talented people in my life. Your emotional support and encouragement have helped me push through those last-minute assessments by reminding me that I am not alone in this and that has made all the difference in the world.

I would also like to take a moment to congratulate every one of us seated here today for completing Year 11 and appreciate our hard work and commitment to do our best. Year 11 was a turning point in our high school lives. Many

8

of us found success despite facing and overcoming a variety of challenges in our lives.

The preliminary exams gave us a taste of what to expect in the HSC and were without a doubt the most difficult set of exams we have sat so far. But never the less, we made it! I would like to thank everyone again for their time and support.I wisheveryone of usthe best ofluckforour final school year. Thank you.
